In the first half of the XXth century, while Upper-Volta (now Burkina Faso) was suffering a terrible epidemic of sleeping sickness, the French colonial administration encouraged the movement of people from Upper-Volta to Ivory Coast to meet their demands for labour. This led to the establishment of Mossi villages, such as those of Koudougou, in the Ivorian forest with populations originating from areas of Upper-Volta that were not only densely populated but also severely affected by sleeping sickness. Since 2000, most cases of sleeping sickness in the Koudougou district of Burkina Faso have been in people originally from Ivory Coast. Who are they? Where did they settle in Burkina Faso? Where do they come from in Ivory Coast? After having retraced the epidemiological history of Koudougou villages in Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, the history of ten cases of sleeping sickness detected passively at Koudougou hospital since 2000 were analysed. All cases originated from the forest area of Ivory Coast. Understanding the spread of sleeping sickness between Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast will assist in the identification of areas of disease risk.  相似文献

Two series of plankton samples, collected in different parts of the Ivory Coast, are examined for their rotifer content. Seventy-one taxa are identified to species level, some of which are present in different forms. Seventeen taxa are new to the Ivory Coast, three are new to Africa. Ecological and distributional notes are given. The correct spelling of Brachionus quadridentatus f. melhemi is discussed.  相似文献

Four new foliicolous lichen species are described from the Ivory Coast (Tropical West Africa): Bapalmuia ivoriensis sp. nov., Chroodiscus africanus sp. nov., C. verrucosus sp. nov., and Lasioloma inexspectatum sp. nov. In addition, the new combination Calenia inconspicua comb, nova [Bas.: Heterothecium inconspicuum] is introduced. Lasioloma inexspectatum is the first species in the genus characterized by transversely septate ascospores and provides additional evidence for phylogenetic lines regarding the evolution of ascospore types in the lichen family Ectolechiaceae. In addition, 61 new records for the Ivory Coast and seven for Guinea are presented, increasing the number of species known in these areas to 161 and 124, respectively. Five species are new for tropical Africa, and six new for the Paleotropics. Further taxonomical and ecogeographical notes on the foliicolous lichen flora of tropical West Africa are provided.  相似文献

The genus Psix Kozlov & Lê (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) is revised from a worldwide perspective. Twelve species are described as new: annulatus [Cameroon], asper [Uganda], aulax [Australia], confluus [Sri Lanka], flavicoxa [Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe], fusm [Australia], lacunatus [Pakistan east to Taiwan, south to Australia], metopa [Australia], rasilis [Ivory Coast, Gambia], sulcifer [Malaysia], viriosus [India east to Philippine Is.] and watshami [E. Africa, Madagascar] . Psix abnormis Kozlov & Lê [W. Africa east to at least India], glabris-crobus (Girault) nxomb. [Australia], olympus (Dodd) n.comb. [Australia], saccharicola (Mani) n.comb. [India], striaticeps (Dodd) n.comb. [W. Africa east to India, Madagascar] and tunetanus (Mineo and Szabó) n.comb. [Tunisia, Gambia, Ivory Coast, Saudi Arabia, S.W. Nearctic, Venezuela] are redescribed. An identification key for the species of Psix is presented. The relationships among species are discussed. The earliest derived species are generally found in Australia and southeast Asia. The more apomorphic species occur generally in Africa, southwest Asia and India. The distribution of Psix tunetanus has possibly been influenced by man. Details of the relationship with Trissolcus and Archi-phanurus are unclear; the position of Psix within the subfamily is therefore also obscure.  相似文献

Leptoderris fasciculata (Benth.) Dunn is a woody liana that grows in the tropical zone of West Africa, where it is exploited in traditional medicine for a number of uses. In the south-eastern Ivory Coast, it is applied to stop bleeding in women after childbirth or in cases of menorrhagia. The phytochemistry of this plant has received little previous attention. We report the isolation of 4′,5,6,7-tetramethoxyisoflavone and dihydrochalcone, new as natural products, together with 10 known compounds from the leaves of L. fasciculata collected in the Ivory Coast.  相似文献

Purpose

Life cycle assessments (LCAs) are considered common quantitative environmental techniques to analyze the environmental impact of products and/or services throughout their entire life cycle. A few LCA studies have been conducted in West Africa. This study aimed to discuss the availability of LCA (and similar) studies in Nigeria, Ghana, and Ivory Coast.

Methods

An online literature review of reports published between 2000 and 2016 was conducted using the following keywords: “life cycle assessment,” “carbon footprinting,” “water footprinting,” “environmental impact,” “Nigeria,” “Ghana” and “Ivory Coast.”

Results and discussion

A total of 31 LCA and environmental studies in Nigeria, Ghana, and Ivory Coast were found; all but one were conducted after 2008. These were mainly academic and most were publicly available. The industries studied included energy sector, waste management, real estate, food sector, and others such as timber and gold. The minimal number of studies on LCAs and environmental impacts in these West African states could be because companies are failing to promote quantitative environmental studies or studies are kept internally for the use of other assessment techniques. Furthermore, it could be that academic research institutions lack cutting-edge research resources for LCA, environmental impact, carbon, and water footprinting studies.

Conclusions

Further quantitative environmental studies should be conducted in Nigeria, Ghana, and Ivory Coast to increase the understanding of environmental impacts. In these countries, the existence of LCA studies (and by association the localized life cycle inventory (LCI) datasets) is crucial as more companies request this information to feed into background processes.

Microsatellite variation from eight loci was studied in five populations of Drosophila teissieri, a fruit-fly found only in the rain forests of sub-Saharan Africa. Five noncontiguous rain forest sites (from Tanzania, Gabon and Ivory Coast) were sampled to measure the effects of historical forest fragmentation on population structure in an obligatory forest-dwelling species. The Ivory Coast and Gabon populations showed a wider range of alleles, different modal alleles and had a higher genetic diversity than the three East African populations. As could be expected, genetic differentiation (FST) was significantly correlated with physical distance, but the westernmost population (Ivory Coast) showed values that were intermediate between the central (Gabon) and Eastern (Tanzania) populations. A migration-drift equilibrium in a stable continuum of populations did not appear adequate to describe the observed distribution. It seems probable that the species has undergone abrupt changes involving isolation, merging and migration of populations, as a consequence of repeated waves of forest fragmentation and coalescence.  相似文献

Summary Here we relate information on flight periods ofAllodontermes giffardii Silv., in Ivory Coast (West Africa). The main point is that female do not fly.The tandems are made on plants.Among the inbreedings carried out on Ivory Coast, we can describe the first stages of development. The founder couple dig an underground cavity in which they tend the first brood without taking any food themselves. Then, the first workers dig ascending passage-way through which they go eating into the wood on the surface. Soldiers are coming from grub. Analogies are drawn between the development ofAllodontermes giffardii and those of other termitidae. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS or NOS3) is the main responsible for nitric oxide (NO) production in vascular system and different polymorphisms have been identified in epidemiological studies. Trying to test the eNOS genetic variation in general populations we studied the 27-bp VNTR in intron 4 and G894T substitution in exon 7 markers in 6 Western Mediterranean populations (3 from Iberian Peninsula, 1 from North Africa, and 2 from Sardinia) and a sample from Ivory Coast. The VNTR frequencies in Western Mediterranean and Ivory Coast fit well into the ranges previously described for Europeans and Sub-Saharans respectively, and a typical African allele has been detected in polymorphic frequencies in the Berber sample. The G894T substitution presents the highest frequencies described for the T allele in the North Mediterranean populations. Linkage disequilibrium is present between both markers in all populations except in the Ivory Coast sample. The variation found for these polymorphisms indicates that they may be a useful tool for population studies even at microgeographical level.  相似文献

It is widely accepted that species diversity is contingent upon the spatial scale used to analyze patterns and processes. Recent studies using coarse sampling grains over large extents have contributed much to our understanding of factors driving global diversity patterns. This advance is largely unmatched on the level of local to landscape scales despite being critical for our understanding of functional relationships across spatial scales. In our study on West African bat assemblages we employed a spatially explicit and nested design covering local to regional scales. Specifically, we analyzed diversity patterns in two contrasting, largely undisturbed landscapes, comprising a rainforest area and a forest‐savanna mosaic in Ivory Coast, West Africa. We employed additive partitioning, rarefaction, and species richness estimation to show that bat diversity increased significantly with habitat heterogeneity on the landscape scale through the effects of beta diversity. Within the extent of our study areas, habitat type rather than geographic distance explained assemblage composition across spatial scales. Null models showed structure of functional groups to be partly filtered on local scales through the effects of vegetation density while on the landscape scale both assemblages represented random draws from regional species pools. We present a mixture model that combines the effects of habitat heterogeneity and complexity on species richness along a biome transect, predicting a unimodal rather than a monotonic relationship with environmental variables related to water. The bat assemblages of our study by far exceed previous figures of species richness in Africa, and refute the notion of low species richness of Afrotropical bat assemblages, which appears to be based largely on sampling biases. Biome transitions should receive increased attention in conservation strategies aiming at the maintenance of ecological and evolutionary processes.  相似文献

Education, child nutrition, adult health/nutrition, and labor mobility are critical factors in achieving recent sustained growth in factor productivity. To compare the contribution of these four human capital inputs, an expanded specification of the wage function is estimated from household (LSMS) surveys of the Ivory Coast and Ghana. Specification tests assess whether the human capital inputs are exogenous, and instrumental variable techniques are used to estimate the wage function. Smaller panels from the Ivory Coast imply the magnitude of measurement error in the human capital inputs and provide more efficient instruments to estimate the wage equation. The conclusion emerges that weight-for-height and height are endogenous, particularly prone to measurement error, and heterogeneous in their effects on wages. Overall returns to these four forms of human capital are similar within each country for men and women, but education and migration returns are higher in the more rapidly growing Ivory Coast, and the wage effects of child nutrition proxied by height are greater in poorer, more malnourished Ghana.  相似文献

Several begomovirus species and strains causing Cassava mosaic disease (CMD) have been reported from cassava in Africa. In Nigeria, African cassava mosaic virus (ACMV) was the predominant virus in this important crop, and East African cassava mosaic virus (EACMV), first reported from eastern Nigeria in 1999, was also found occasionally. A survey was conducted in 2002 to resolve the diversity of the virus types present in cassava in Nigeria and to further understand the increasing complexity of the viruses contributing to CMD. A total of 234 leaf samples from cassava with conspicuous CMD symptoms were collected in farmers’ fields across different agroecological zones of Nigeria and subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with type‐specific primers. In addition and, to provide a full characterization of the viruses present, DNA‐A genome components of several viruses and informative genome fragments were sequenced. In Nigeria, ACMV proved to be the dominant virus with 80% of all samples being positive for ACMV. The East African cassava mosaic Cameroon virus (EACMCV) prevalent in Cameroon and Ivory Coast was detected in single infections (2%) and in mixed infections (18%) with ACMV. There was no indication for other virus strains of EACMV present in the country. The EACMCV samples collected showed a high nucleotide sequence identity >98% and resembled the described sequence of a Cameroon isolate (EACMCV‐CM) more than an Ivory Coast isolate, EACMCV‐CM[CI]. Evidence is provided that the EACMCV has reached epidemiological significance in Nigeria.  相似文献

The main purpose of this work was to make a survey of thePapio anubis demography because of the lack of data on Ivory Coast baboons now prevailing in this country. Two outstanding facts came to light: on the one hand, the baboons had vanished from the greater part of the studied regions, either by the destruction of their habitat at the time of rural growth (connected to demographic and agricultural increase) or by excessive hunting; only some restricted territories, sheltering a few troops, still subsisted, scattered along the Nzi River and in sites with little access and thinly populated; on the other hand, observation ofPapio anubis troops was possible only in privileged areas such as National Park. In the Comoé National Park, 14 troops were seen, totaling 257 baboons, of which 173 were adults with a sex-ratio reaching 0.82. The mean size of a troop was 18.4 baboons (size varying between 8 and 32). The youngest individuals, aged under 1 year, were weakly represented (8.9%). This study showed thatPapio anubis of Ivory Coast were closed related to those living in East Africa: differences, when they exited, were linked to geographic circumstances. It also underlined the precariousness of the survival of this primate species in Ivory Coast and the danger of their eradication in the near future.   相似文献

The use of stone-tools to open palm nuts (Elaeis guineensis) was studied in a group of 16 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) released from captivity to a natural island setting in Liberia. The behaviour was started by one female of the group; it then spread to 12 others over periods varying from a few seconds to a few weeks. Nut-cracking soon spread to three other sites, both spontaneously and with human encouragement. Both nuts and tools were carried distances of several hundred meters. Social interaction at cracking sites was rich and varied, ranging from fights over possession of tools to unsolicited sharing of nuts. Nut-crackers showed selectivity in schoosing “good” nuts and varied their methods according to the qualities of the nuts. Individual differences in technique emerged. These are the first detailed behavioural data on palm-nut-cracking, and they show many parallels with nut-cracking of other species by chimpanzees of the Tai Forest, Ivory Coast. This is another example of hammer-stone use from a limited region of West Africa: southeastern Guinea, eastern Liberia, and western Ivory Coast. This suggests limited cultural diffusion of the custom.  相似文献

Analysis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains was carried out using isolates collected from 69 Senegalese and 20 Ivory Coast tuberculosis patients. These 89 isolates were typed by means of the spoligotyping technique, showing clusterized populations of bacterial strains. In the Senegalese patients, 35 genetic profiles were observed with 10 clusters of spoligotypes from 44 isolates. Among Ivory Coast patients, 11 spoligotypes were found for 20 isolates. A particular cluster of isolates was evident both in Senegalese (10) and Ivory Coast (11) patients. These results show the existence of polymorphism of the direct repeat region for African M. tuberculosis strains. However they suggest that additionnal markers are needed for accurate epidemiological studies in areas that are highly endemic for tuberculosis.  相似文献

The purse-web spider genus Calommata Lucas, 1837 is revised in the Afrotropical Region. Following examination of the female type material, Calommata transvaalica Hewitt, 1916 is removed from synonymy with Calommata simoni Pocock, 1903 and revalidated. The females of both species are redescribed and their males described for the first time. While Calommata simoni is very widespread across tropical Africa, Calommata transvaalica is endemic to northern South Africa. Four new species are described, all known only from males: Calommata megaesp. n. (Zimbabwe), Calommata meridionalissp. n. (South Africa), Calommata namibicasp. n. (Namibia) and Calommata tibialissp. n. (Ivory Coast and Togo). Notes are presented on the biology of each species.  相似文献

Current debates surrounding the ethnic mobilization of indigenous groups are explored with reference to Nicaragua's Atlantic Coast region. The Autonomy Project, promoted under the revolutionary government of the 1980s, inspired new forms of regional multi‐ethnic forms of mobilization and, in so doing, eschewed nationalistic claims associated with the resurgence of ethnicity elsewhere. The fate of the principle of ethnic autonomy is subsequently examined in the wake of the defeat of the Sandinistas in the elections held in 1990. Evidence suggests that domestic political conditions as well as international political and economic pressure have been crucial in undermining the autonomy process. This, in turn, has had important consequences for ethnic identity formation in the region, since a combination of pressure from international agencies, the United States government and multinational companies in conjunction with the UNO alliance have undermined educational and employment as well as political initiatives built around old and new ethnic groupings. Examples of bilingualism and initiatives to control and protect the region's resources are shown to have suffered directly as a result of the increased activity of multinationals, the privatization programmes of the Chomorro government and efforts to bypass local political structures. A local radio station, which also played a role in promoting multi‐ethnicity in the region, was similarly under threat. In conclusion, and drawing on wider debates, it is argued that Nicaragua's Atlantic Coast provides an important example of the interpenetration of local and global pressures in the development of ethnic politics. The analysis of changes on the Atlantic Coast during the period of the revolution and after the defeat of the Sandinistas in 1990 allows us to assess their impact on changing forms of cultural and ethnic identity in the region. The article argues that the scope for ethnic autonomy, including new and empowering forms of regional multi‐ethnic identity, is seen to be profoundly contingent on political circumstances which themselves cannot be considered independently of wider international and economic conditions.  相似文献

Themariner transposable elements of several natural populations ofDrosophila teissieri, a rainforest species endemic to tropical Africa, were studied. Natural populations trapped along a transect from Zimbabwe to the Ivory Coast were analyzed by Southern blotting, in situ hybridization, cloning, and sequencing of PCR products. The Brazzaville population had some full-length elements, while the remaining populations had mainly deleted elements. The main class of deleted elements lacked a 500-bp segment. A mechanism is proposed that could generate such elements rapidly. In situ hybridizations showed that there are nomariner elements in pericentromeric heterochromatin. Finally, the phylogeny of theMos1-likemariner full-length elements is consistent with vertical transmission from the ancestor of themelanogaster subgroup. Correspondence to: P. Capy  相似文献

Morphological differences among individuals in a species represent one of the most striking aspects of biology, and a primary aim of modern genetics is to uncover the molecular basis of morphological variation. In a survey of meiosis phenotypes among environmental isolates of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we observed an unusual arrangement of meiotic spores within the spore sac in a strain from Ivory Coast, West Africa. We mined population genomic data to identify CDC28 as the major genetic determinant of meiotic and budding cell shape behaviors in this strain. Molecular genetic methods confirmed the role of the Ivory Coast variant of CDC28 in the arrangement of spores after meiosis, in the shape of budding cells in rich medium and in the morphology of filamentous growth during nitrogen limitation. Our results shed new light on the role of CDC28 in yeast cell division, and our work suggests that with the growing availability of genomic data sets in many systems, a priori prediction of functional variants will become an increasingly powerful strategy in molecular genetics.  相似文献
