The political mobilization of marginalized ethnic groups is a process indispensable for the realization of their political objectives. This article identifies the key criteria and conditions that promote and impede successful ethnic mobilization and analyses the determinants of state policy towards newly mobilizing ethnic minorities. The theoretical arguments receive empirical support from the findings of a comparative study of the Romani (Gypsy) minority in seven East European states.  相似文献

The level of political mobilization among ethnic minorities in Central and Eastern Europe has often been regarded as directly dependent on the strong or weak ethnic identity of the groups involved. Less attention has gone to the role of ethnic leaders in creating ethnic group identities for political purposes. This article explores the influence of political mobilization on ethnic group formation in the case of the Roma (Gypsies) in the contemporary Czech and Slovak Republics. It examines the various ways in which Romani activists in these two countries have “framed” Romani identity. The article suggests that activists’ conceptions of Romani identity are closely tied to their political strategies. At the same time, Romani activists have not been able to gain complete control over the production of Romani identity. They have had to deal with powerful schemes of ethnic categorization promulgated by the media, public officials and policy documents.  相似文献

The Balkan Peninsula is considered the most important refugium for species during the Pleistocene glaciations and today harbours c. 2000 endemic species, but we know surprisingly little about the evolution of taxa in this region. Veronica saturejoides, V. thessalica and V. erinoides are a group of closely related alpine taxa endemic to the Balkan Peninsula. Here, we analyse four DNA regions [the nuclear chalcone synthase intron (CHSi) and ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the plastid rpoBtrnC spacer and trnLtrnLtrnF region] and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprints to provide a phylogenetic hypothesis for the relationships among these taxa. Additionally, we analyse leaf morphological characters used to distinguish the three subspecies of V. saturejoides. The analyses support the distinction of the three subspecies based on previously intuitively suggested characters. Nuclear chalcone synthase intron data indicate that the southern taxa are genetically much more diverse than the more northern V. saturejoides subsp. saturejoides. Phylogenetic relationships inferred from this region and AFLP fingerprints support the monophyly of V. saturejoides. In contrast, plastid DNA regions suggest a closer relationship of V. saturejoides subsp. saturejoides to V. thessalica. The will to have one's own particular identity universally acknowledged and respected is now one of the most significant determinants of the sociopolitical dynamic of contemporary modern societies. However, the actual recognition of difference is more often than not an unsatisfactory and disappointing experience for many of the groups and communities striving for that recognition. The recent experience of Canadian Aboriginal peoples is a case in point. This article looks at the struggle of Aboriginal nations for recognition in one particular region of Canada, the province of Quebec. Indeed, Quebec offers a revealing case‐study of the peculiarities of the politics of recognition. For over three decades now, the French‐speaking majority of Quebec has striven to assert its ethnocultural distinctiveness and laid claims to a special status within the Canadian political and constitutional framework. Today, both Quebecers and Aboriginals are recognition seekers within the Canadian polity. As a result, their relationship is inevitably marked by their respective but competing attempt to draw the attention of the Canadian state to their particular identity claims. In recent years, this has led to a highly conflictual dynamic which considerably strains any hope of social and cultural coexistence. The article examines the particularities of the politics of recognition in the Quebec context. Its objective is twofold. First, it should serve to shed some light on the manifestations of Aboriginal ethnonationalism in Canada. Secondly, it seeks to illustrate the limitations and paradoxical nature of the politics of recognition within a liberal framework.  相似文献

We present an overview of archaeobotanical Carthamus spp. finds from Neolithic to medieval sites in the Near East and adjacent areas. A particular focus is put on the cultivated form of the genus. Safflower appears first in a number of early Bronze Age (3000 b.c.) sites in northern and central Syria. From there it apparently spread to Egypt, the Aegean and south-eastern Europe. The Near Eastern Bronze Age evidence shows a striking exclusiveness in the distribution patterns of safflower and flax, with flax being restricted to Levantine and Iranian sites. This may reflect the contrasting ecological requirements of the two crops, with safflower being well adapted to drought and salinity and thus to arid conditions. At the same time the geographically complementary evidence may indicate a similar use of the two crops and most probably suggests that the safflower was also used for oil almost from the beginning of its cultivation. Recent years have witnessed an increasing number of calls for anthropology to devote more attention to non‐visual modes of perception. Frequently, the implicit suggestion of these calls has been that the acknowledgement of different ways of organising the senses could help us escape the supposed malaise of modern ‘ocular‐centrism ‘. This paper explores the sense and symbolism of smell in Buli, a village in eastern Indonesia, to argue that smell is part of an ontology that catches Buli people in a malaise of their own. ‘Bad’ smell attests to an ambiguous moral order that can be traced across myth, ritual and everyday life. Ambiguity is ever‐present because ‘bad’ or disgusting smells destabilise the very conceptual order they also help support. The analysis of smells as they relate to local notions of disgust is therefore suggested as an alternative way to conceptualise the contradictory nature of power.  相似文献

Abstract. Up to now the syntaxonomy of the Fagus woods of the southern Balkans is far less known than that of beech communities in the northwestern part of the Balkan Peninsula and in central and western Europe. A set of 607 phytosociological relevés from southeastern Serbia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and northern and central Greece was subjected to numerical classification and ordination. These results were used for a syntaxonomic revision of Fagus, Fagus‐Abies and Fagus‐Acer woodland communities of the southwestern Balkans. The Doronico columnae‐Fagenion (seven associations from Serbia, the F.Y.R.O.M., and high altitudes in northern Greece) and the Doronico orientalis‐Fagenion (four associations from northern and central Greece) were distinguished. The results of ordination by Canonical Variates Analysis (CVA) showed a very distinct phytogeographical pattern of differentiation between community types. The floristic composition of Fagus woods changes markedly along the north‐south gradient. The share of Subbalkan, Balkan, Submediterranean and Mediterranean species increases significantly towards the south, while the Central‐European, European, Euro‐Siberian, Euro‐Asiatic and Circumpolar species decrease in the same direction. The syntaxonomic differentiation of the Fagus woodlands and their classification into regional suballiances reflects this gradient. With the rise in altitude, the number of Balkan, Mediterranean, Submediterranean, European and Euro‐Asiatic species declines.  相似文献

The exchange of CO2 and O2 was measured in leaves using specially constructed equipment capable of responding to rapid transients. Optical measurements provided information on cytochrome f and P 700 oxidation in the light. The following results were obtained: i) The solubilization of CO2 was used to calculate the pH of the chloroplast stroma in darkened leaves. Values ranged from pH 7.8 to pH 8.0 in different C3 plants. ii) Illumination of predarkened leaves of Helianthus annuus L. resulted in three distinct phases of O2 evolution that illustrate the complexity of light activation of the photosynthetic apparatus. A first burst of O2 is attributed to the reduction of electron carriers of the electron-transport chain. While plastoquinone was reduced, cytochrome f was oxidized. Appreciable oxidation of P 700 became possible only during the second O2 burst, which indicates the reduction of the phosphoglycerate pool. Extensive oxidation required the opening of an electron gate on the reducing side of photosystem I. The subsequent slow rise in O2 evolution towards a steady state reflects activation of the Calvin cycle and is the result of CO2 assimilation. iii) Light-dependent CO2 uptake by predarkened leaves occurred in four phases, three of them based on pH changes in the chloroplast stroma. Initial CO2 uptake was small and probably caused by protonation of reduced plastoquinone. In the second phase, which coincided with the reduction of the pool of phosphoglycerate, the initial alkalization of the chloroplast stroma was substantially increased. The volatile profiles of rare Malus domestica Borkh . honey were investigated for the first time. Two representative samples from Poland (sample I) and Spain (sample II) were selected by pollen analysis (44–45% of Malus spp. pollen) and investigated by GC/FID/MS after headspace solid‐phase microextraction (HS‐SPME) and ultrasonic solvent extraction (USE). The apple honey is characterized by high percentage of shikimic acid‐pathway derivatives, as well as terpenes, norisoprenoids, and some other compounds such as coumaran and methyl 1H‐indole‐3‐acetate. The main compounds of the honey headspace were (sample I; sample II): benzaldehyde (9.4%; 32.1%), benzyl alcohol (0.3%; 14.4%), hotrienol (26.0%, 6.2%), and lilac aldehyde isomers (26.3%; 1.7%), but only Spanish sample contained car‐2‐en‐4‐one (10.2%). CH2Cl2 and pentane/Et2O 1 : 2 (v/v) were used for USE. The most relevant compounds identified in the extracts were: benzaldehyde (0.9–3.9%), benzoic acid (2.0–11.2%), terpendiol I (0.3–7.4%), coumaran (0.0–2.8%), 2‐phenylacetic acid (2.0–26.4%), methyl syringate (3.9–13.1%), vomifoliol (5.0–31.8%), and methyl 1H‐indole‐3‐acetate (1.9–10.2%). Apple honey contained also benzyl alcohol, 2‐phenylethanol, (E)‐cinnamaldehyde, (E)‐cinnamyl alcohol, eugenol, vanillin, and linalool that have been found previously in apple flowers, thus disclosing similarity of both volatile profiles.  相似文献

The architectural, compositional and functional characteristics of the cell walls of the leaves of the moss Rhacocarpus purpurascens (Brid.) Par. have been analysed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, wall-extraction methods, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and water-retention experiments. Four-layered cell walls with a peculiar architecture which, so far, appears to be unique among plants were apparent. The architecture of the walls was not affected by sequential wall-extraction procedures. Subsequent analysis of the residual pre-extracted walls by classical spectro-photometrical methods revealed that the walls are composed of mainly lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose in a ratio of about 9:8:5, determining their integrity. This was supported by NMR spectroscopy. The resonance spectrum showed various characteristics typical of lignin; however, some specific peaks associated with lignin were missing. The walls exhibited no particular properties for external water conduction but seem to be adapted to rapid absorption of fog, dew, or rain. A mutant of Amaranthus edulis (Speg.) lacking activity of the C4 leaf form of NAD-malic enzyme (ME; EC 1.1.1.39) has been isolated. Homozygous mutant (5% wild-type ME activity) and heterozygous (50% wild-type ME activity) F2 plants were shown to contain both the α and β NAD-ME subunits in similar amounts to those detected in the wild-type leaves. The rate of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation was reduced in the homozygous mutant to 5% of that observed for the wild-type leaves. Other C4 enzymes were not down-regulated in the mutant plants. There was little difference in photosynthetic rate of the heterozygous plants compared to the wild-type, suggesting that NAD-ME exerts little control over the rate of C4 photosynthesis, and that in the wild-type the enzyme has a very low control coefficient. The activity loss in the heterozygote may therefore be compensated by regulatory mechanisms that increase the activity of the enzyme in vivo. Data for bundle-sheath strands indicated that although the homozygous mutants were able to oxidise malate via the Krebs cycle, they were unable to convert malate to pyruvate and alanine via NAD-ME. Using the cell pressure probe, the effects of temperature on hydraulic conductivity (Lp; osmotic water permeability), solute permeability (permeability coefficient, Ps), and reflection coefficients (σs) were measured on internodes of Chara corallina, Klein ex Willd., em R.D.W.. For the first time, complete sets of transport coefficients were obtained in the range between 10 and 35 °C which provided evidence about pathways of water and solutes as they move across the plasma membrane (water channel and bilayer arrays). Test solutes used to check for the selectivity of water channels were monohydric alcohols of different molecular size and shape (ethanol, n-propanol, iso-propanol, and tert-butanol) and heavy water (HDO). Within the limits of accuracy, Q10 values for Lp and for the diffusive water permeability (Pd) were identical (Q10 for Lp = 1.29 ± 0.17 (± SD; n = 15 cells) and Q10 for Pd = 1.25 ± 0.16 (n = 5 cells)). The Q10 values were equivalent to activation energies of Ea = 16.8 ± 6.4 and 16.6 ± 10.0 kJ · mol−1, respectively, which is similar to that of self-diffusion or of viscous flow of water. The Q10 values and activation energies for Ps of the alcohols were significantly larger (ethanol: Q10 = 1.68 ± 0.16, Ea = 37.1 ± 5.9 kJ · mol−1; n-propanol: Q10 =  1.75 ± 0.40, Ea = 43.1 ± 15.3 kJ · mol−1; iso-propanol: Q10 = 2.12 ± 0.42, Ea =  52.2 ± 14.6 kJ · mol−1; tert-butanol: Q10 = 2.13 ± 0.56, Ea = 51.6 ± 17.1 kJ · mol−1; ±SD; n = 5 to 6 cells). Effects of temperature on reflection coefficients were most pronounced. With increasing temperature, σs values of the alcohols decreased and those of HDO increased. The data indicate that water and solutes use different pathways when crossing the membrane. Ordinary and isotopic water use water channels and the other test solutes use the bilayer array (composite transport model of membrane). Changes in σs values with temperature were found to be a sensitive measure for the open/closed state of water channels. The decrease of σs with temperature was theoretically predicted from the temperature dependence of Ps and Lp. Differences between predicted and measured values of σs allowed estimation of the bypass flow (slippage) of solutes through water channels which did not completely exclude test solutes. The permeability of channels depended on the structure and size of test solutes. It is concluded that water channels are much less selective than is usually thought. Since water channels represent single-file or no-pass pores, solutes drag along considerable amounts of water as they diffuse across channels. This results in low overall values of σs. The σs of HDO was extremely low. Its response to temperature was opposite to that for the σs of the alcohols. This suggested a stronger effect of temperature on the hydraulic (osmotic) than on the diffusive water flow across individual water channels, i.e. a differential sensitivity of different mechanisms to temperature. The orientation of microtubules (MTs) was examined in epidermal cells of azuki bean (Vigna angularis Ohwi et Ohashi) epicotyls. The orientation of MTs adjacent to the outer tangential wall of the cells, which has a crossed polylamellate structure with lamellae of longitudinal cellulose microfibrils alternating with lamellae of transverse cellulose microfibrils, differed from one cell to another. Treatment with an auxin-free solution caused the accumulation of cells with longitudinal MTs and subsequent treatment with a solution that contained auxin resulted in the accumulation of cells with transverse MTs, showing that sequential treatments with auxin-free and auxin-containing solutions can synchronize the reorientation of MTs. The MTs, once reoriented from longitudinal to transverse, returned to longitudinal and then back to transverse once again, the duration of the cycle being about 6 h. Gibberellic acid, known to increase the percentage of cells with transverse MTs, promoted reorientation of MTs from longitudinal to transverse and inhibited that from transverse to longitudinal. Cytochalasin D, an agent that disrupts actin filaments, speeded up the reorientation from transverse to longitudinal and slowed down that from longitudinal to transverse. It caused an increase in the percentage of cells with MTs in mixed orientation, and the percentage of such cells was highest when the percentage of cells with longitudinal MTs was decreasing and that of cells with transverse MTs was increasing. The response of chlorophyll fluorescence elicited by a low-fluence-rate modulated measuring beam to actinic light and to superimposed 1-s pulses from a high-fluence-rate light source was used to measure the redox state of the primary acceptor Q A of photosystem II in leaves which were photosynthesizing under steady-state conditions. The leaves were exposed to various O2 and CO2 concentrations and to different energy fluence rates of actinic light to assess the relationship between rates of photosynthesis and the redox state of Q A. Both at low and high fluence rates, the redox state of Q A was little altered when the CO2 concentration was reduced from saturation to about 600 l·l-1 although photosynthesis was decreased particularly at high fluence rates. Upon further reduction in CO2 content the amount of reduced Q A increased appreciably even at low fluence rates where light limited CO2 reduction. Both in the presence and in the absence of CO2, a more reduced Q A was observed when the O2 concentration was below 2%. Q A was almost fully reduced when leaves were exposed to high fluence rates under nitrogen. Even at low fluence rates, Q A was more reduced in shade leaves of Asarum europaeum and Fagus sylvatica than in leaves of Helianthus annuus and Fagus sylvatica grown under high light. Also, in shade leaves the redox state of Q A changed more during a transition from air containing 350 l·l-1 CO2 to CO2-free air than in sun leaves. For the first time tripeptides, Z-AA(1)-Xaa-AA(3)-OMe (AA(1) and AA(3) = Gly or Aib, Xaa = 2Pmg and 2Pyg) were prepared containing alpha-methyl-alpha-(2-pyridyl)glycine (2Pmg) and alpha-(2-pyridyl)glycine (2Pyg) by solid-phase Ugi reaction. These results clearly indicate that for the preparation of tripeptides containing an amino acid with a pyridine ring, the solid-phase Ugi reaction is very useful.NMR analysis clarified that 2Pmg-containing tripeptides adopt a unique conformation with an intramolecular hydrogen bond between 2Pmg-NH and the pyridine nitrogen. However, in the case of Z-Gly-2Pyg-Gly-OMe, the intramolecular hydrogen bonding between 2Pyg-NH and the pyridine nitrogen was not observed, whereas Z-Aib-2Pyg-Aib-OMe adopts a unique conformation with an intramolecular hydrogen bond between 2Pyg-NH and a pyridine nitrogen. Conformational analysis of the tripeptides, Z-AA(1)-Xaa-AA(3)-OMe (AA(1), AA(3) = Gly or Aib, Xaa = alpha,alpha-di(2-pyridyl)glycine (2Dpy), alpha-phenyl-alpha-(2-pyridyl)glycine (2Ppg), 2Pmg and 2Pyg), clarified that when an alpha,alpha-disubstituted glycine with a 2-pyridyl group at an alpha-carbon atom is introduced into any peptide, an intramolecular hydrogen bond between a pyridine nitrogen and an amide proton is formed and conformational mobility of the peptide backbone is restricted.  相似文献

Inflammatory disease plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of many neurological disorders. Astrogliosis and induction of pro-inflammatory mediators such as chemokines, cytokines and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) are the 'hallmarks' of inflammatory disease. Increased activity of lactosylceramide (LacCer) synthase and increased synthesis of LacCer during glial proliferation, and induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and iNOS suggests a role for LacCer in these cellular signaling pathways. Studies using complementary techniques of inhibitors and antisense reported that inhibition of LacCer synthesis inhibits glial proliferation, as well as the induction of pro-inflammatory mediators (cytokines and iNOS). This inhibition was bypassed by exogenous LacCer, but not by other related lipids (e.g. glucosylceramide, galactocerebroside, GD1, GM1), indicating a role for LacCer in inflammatory signaling pathways. Furthermore, inhibition of glial proliferation and induction of inflammatory mediators by antisense to Ras GTPase, PI3Kinase and inhibitors of mitogen-activated protein kinase indicate the participation of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3Kinas)/Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase/nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) signaling pathways in LacCer-mediated inflammatory events thus exposing additional targets for therapeutics for inflammatory disease conditions.  相似文献

A gene highly expressed in the floral organs of almond (Prunus amygdalus Batsch), and coding for the cyanogenic enzyme (R)-(+)-mandelonitrile lyase (EC 4.1.2.10), has been identified and the full-length cDNA sequenced. The temporal expression pattern in maturing seeds and during floral development was analyzed by RNA blot, and the highest mRNA levels were detected in floral tissues. The spatial mRNA accumulation pattern in almond flower buds was also analyzed by in-situ hybridization. The mRNA levels were compared during seed maturation and floral development in fruit and floral samples from cultivars classified as homozygous or heterozygous for the sweet-almond trait or homozygous for the bitter trait. No correlation was found between these characteristics and levels of mandelonitrile lyase mRNA, suggesting that the presence of this protein is not the limiting factor in the production of hydrogen cyanide. Throughout Western societies, policy‐makers who address the problems of disadvantaged ethnic and immigrant minorities confront norms that prescribe equal or preferential treatment for these groups. Variations in these norms make significant differences in policy‐making. Based on evidence from housing and planning policies and a standardized survey of local élites in comparable German, French and US metropolitan areas, this article analyses how these norms altered logics of policy‐making. Normative differences help to explain why policies to house minorities proved more successful in the German setting than in the French. Contrasts in central‐local relations, in local government, in political parties and in the social and economic background of policy‐making fail to account for the difference that these norms make. In the American setting normative ambiguities combined with institutional, social and spatial differences to render parallel norms comparatively ineffective.  相似文献

The desiccation sensitivity in relation to the stage of development was investigated in embryonic axes from the homoiohydrous (recalcitrant) seeds of Landolphia kirkii. Electrolyte leakage, used to assess membrane damage after flash (very rapid) drying, indicated that axes from immature (non-germinable) seeds were the most desiccation-tolerant, followed by those from mature seeds, while axes from seeds germinated for increasing times were progressively more desiccation-sensitive. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to study the relationship between desiccation sensitivity and the properties of water in the tissues. Axes from immature seeds had a lower content of non-freezable water than that of any other developmental stage and a higher enthalpy of melting of freezable water. For mature and immature axes electrolyte leakage increased at the point of loss of freezable water. At other developmental stages the water content at which electrolyte leakage increased markedly correlated with the other properties of the water, such as the change in the shape of the melting endotherm and the onset temperature. Ultrastructural studies of axes at the various developmental stages showed changes in the degree and pattern of vacuolation, the presence and quantities of lipid and starch, and the degree of endomembrane development.
