Temporal and spatial patterns of bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) were studied monthly from January 1997 to December 1998 in the middle Adriatic Sea. Bacterial and HNF relationships with phytoplankton biomass and temperature were analyzed to examine how the relative importance of bottom-up and top-down factors may shift over seasons and locations. For the coastal area, an inconsistent relationship between bacterial abundance and chlorophyll a and a stronger relationship between bacterial abundance and bacterial production suggest that other substrates than those of phytoplankton origin are important for bacteria. The analysis of simultaneous effects of temperature and bacterial production on bacterial abundance showed that the effect of temperature obscured the effects of bacterial production, suggesting that bacterial growth itself is highly temperature-dependent. The relationship between HNF abundance and bacterial abundance was slightly improved by the inclusion of in situ temperature, bacterial production or both parameters, as additional independent variables. About 60% of the variability in HNF abundance can be explained by bacterial abundance, bacterial production and temperature. In the open sea, tight coupling of bacterial abundance with chlorophyll a concentrations implied that phytoplankton-derived substrates have a dominant role in controlling bacterial abundance. During the colder months, bacterial abundance was high enough to support higher HNF abundance than observed, suggesting that predation exerted a minor depressing influence on bacterial abundance during that period. Abstract

Data on the horizontal and vertical distribution of diatom species, collected between April 1995 and March 1996 in coastal waters of the Apulian Adriatic Sea are presented. A total number of 120 species belonging to 51 genera were identified. Diatoms were dominant in the major part of the examined samples, constituting up to 90% of the total cell numbers during the spring period.  相似文献

Zooplankton was sampled during 39 cruises, from 1990 to 1993, at four fixed stations in the open northern Adriatic. Hydrographic factors were important in determining the abundance of the smallest and largest components of the northern Adriatic food chain during this period. Nauplii—especially those of the smallest size fractions—were the major mediators of material transfer between primary producers and higher trophic levels. There was a significant difference in the vertical distribution of nauplii size fractions between the eastern and western parts of the northern Adriatic, but not in their population density. According to multiple correlation analyses, the abundance of naupliar size fractions in the western area correlated strongly with temperature and with certain biological factors. This study confirms the important influence of the Po River and of mid-Adriatic waters on the planktonic ecosystem of the northern Adriatic. Electronic Publication  相似文献

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to reduced anthropogenic pressure on ecosystems in several world areas, but resulting ecosystem responses in these areas have not been investigated. This paper presents an approach to make quick assessments of potential habitat changes in 2020 of eight marine species of commercial importance in the Adriatic Sea. Measurements from floating probes are interpolated through an advection-equation based model. The resulting distributions are then combined with species observations through an ecological niche model to estimate habitat distributions in the past years (2015–2018) at 0.1° spatial resolution. Habitat patterns over 2019 and 2020 are then extracted and explained in terms of specific environmental parameter changes. These changes are finally assessed for their potential dependency on climate change patterns and anthropogenic pressure change due to the pandemic. Our results demonstrate that the combined effect of climate change and the pandemic could have heterogeneous effects on habitat distributions: three species (Squilla mantis, Engraulis encrasicolus, and Solea solea) did not show significant niche distribution change; habitat suitability positively changed for Sepia officinalis, but negatively for Parapenaeus longirostris, due to increased temperature and decreasing dissolved oxygen (in the Adriatic) generally correlated with climate change; the combination of these trends with an average decrease in chlorophyll, probably due to the pandemic, extended the habitat distributions of Merluccius merluccius and Mullus barbatus but reduced Sardina pilchardus distribution. Although our results are based on approximated data and reliable at a macroscopic level, we present a very early insight of modifications that will possibly be observed years after the end of the pandemic when complete data will be available. Our approach is entirely based on Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data and is general enough to be used for other species and areas.  相似文献

The distribution of planktonic copepods in the Adriatic Seahas been analyzed on the basis of 132 samples collected at 35fixed stations during 4 seasonal cruises. A total of 127 specieshave been determined and 3 characteristic copepod communitieshave been identified. The distribution of copepod species hasbeen found to reflect the dual physiognomy of the Adriatic.The shallow northern section is characterized by high densityvalues, low species diversity, and the dominance of speciesbelonging to the estuarine and coastal communities. The relativelydeep waters of the southern section are characterized by lowdensity values, high species diversity, and the presence ofmany species belonging to the upper, middle, and lower zonesof the oceanic community. Temporal variations in the horizontalspread of these 3 communities are discussed in relation to seasonalcycles in abundance, vertical migration patterns, and the currentregime in the Adriatic.  相似文献

Estimates of the population size of the Antarctic petrelThalassoica antarctica are hampered by its breeding locations in remote nunatak areas of the Antarctic continent. Studies at sea can provide additional information on numbers. Seabird censuses during spring 1992 showed few Antarctic petrels in the western part of the Weddell Sea, but high numbers east of the South Sandwich Islands. The vast majority of the birds occurred in a band of 300 km north to 150 km south of the outer ice edge. Numbers at sea fluctuated in agreement with synchronized colony attendance patterns in the pre-breeding phase and peaked shortly before egglaying when colonies are completely deserted. In this period, densities of Antarctic petrels in the marginal ice zone suggest that at least 2.7±0.5 million individuals occur in the Weddell Sea. It is likely that similar numbers occur immediately east of the study area. The distribution of the petrels matches the location, but not the size, of known breeding colonies in Dronning Maud Land and Coats Land, which suggests that important colonies in this area remain to be discovered. The observations imply that Antarctic petrels in the Weddell Sea commute over ice a surprisingly large distance of at least 2,000 km for a single pre-breeding visit to the colonies.  相似文献

Bathypterois mediterraneus was collected on 148 bottom trawls between 147 and 2251 m depth in the north-western Mediterranean. The species appeared below 700 m, its relative abundance and biomass increased progressively and reached its maximum at 2100-2300 m. A total of 1913 specimens were measured, ranging from 4 to 20 cm standard length ( L s). The size composition with depth did not show any specific trend, and no modal progression could be distinguished in the length frequency distribution by cruise, with dominance of large fish (13-15 cm L s) and a unimodal size pattern. The otoliths of 173 specimens were examined and showed the ring pattern common to teleost fishes. The age ranged between 0 and 15 years, although specimens of 4-12 years old were the most abundant. The growth parameters and the growth curve obtained from the interpretation of the growth rings in otoliths showed a low growth rate.  相似文献

The composition, abundance and vertical distribution of mesoplanktonic cnidarians collected along a transect across the Weddell Sea have been analysed. The transect was characterized by a thermocline, approximately between 200 and 100 m, which deepened significantly towards the shelf edges. In total, 10 species of medusae and 18 species of siphonophores were identified. The most abundant medusae were Pantachogon scotti (up to 11,671 specimens/1,000 m3) and Arctapodema ampla (up to 960 specimens/1000 m3). The most abundant siphonophores were Muggiaea bargmannae (up to 1,172 nectophores/1,000 m3) and Dimophyes arctica (up to 230 nectophores/1,000 m3). Five assemblages of planktonic cnidarians were distinguished: (a) epipelagic species located in and above the thermocline; (b) epi- and upper mesopelagic species located in, above and just below the thermocline; (c) epi- and mesopelagic species located in and below the thermocline; (d) mesopelagic species; (e) lower mesopelagic species. Differences in the depth distribution of the various species gave rise to a clear partitioning of the mesoplanktonic cnidarian population throughout the water column. This vertical partitioning was related to the existence of a thermocline, the structure of the water column and the vertical distribution of prey.  相似文献

春季海南岛近岸海域尿素与浮游生物的脲酶活性   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
2011年春季(4-5月),对海南岛的海口湾、澄迈湾、文昌八门湾、陵水新村湾和大东海5个海湾的尿素浓度及浮游生物的脲酶活性开展调查研究,结合其它理化环境因子,分析海南岛近岸海域尿素的可利用性及其对该海区浮游植物生长可能产生的影响.结果表明,海南岛近岸水体中尿素平均浓度为2.07-3.30 μmol/L,占总溶解态氮TDN含量的14%-38%,尿素占TDN比例由北向东、南方向递增.浮游生物脲酶活性为0.30-0.84 μmolN· L-1· h-1,海口湾最高,从北部向东、南部逐渐减少.各海湾较高水平的尿素和脲酶活性主要分布在排污口、养殖区或旅游区的近岸海域.硅藻为优势种,甲藻种类少且密度低,部分甲藻密度达到104-105个/L的水体,尿素和脲酶活性也处于较高水平.海区浮游植物细胞密度与脲酶活性或尿素占TDN比例等因子存在相关性,表明尿素是海南海域浮游植物生长不可忽略的重要氮源.尿素在一定程度上促进春季海南岛近岸海域甲藻等浮游植物的生长,可能对浮游植物群落结构的改变产生重要影响.  相似文献

The structure of the food web was investigated in open waters adjacent to the marginal ice zone in the southern Scotia Sea in spring 1983. Diets were defined for dominant zooplankton, micronekton, and flying seabird species and then aggregated by cluster analysis into feeding groups. Most zooplankton were omnivorous, feeding on phytoplankton, protozoans, and in some cases, small metazoans (copepods). Only two species were found to be exclusively herbivorous:Calanoides acutus andRhincalanus gigas. Micronekton were carnivores with copepods being the dominant prey in all their diets. The midwater fishElectrona antarctica was the dominant food item in seven of the nine seabird species examined. Cephalopods, midwater decapod shrimps and carrion were also important in the diets of a few seabird species. Comparison (cluster analysis) of diets in spring with other seasons (winter, fall) indicated that over half the species examined (18 of 31) had similar diets in all seasons tested. The significant intraspecific shifts in diet that did occur were attributable to regional, seasonal, and interannual effects. A scheme is presented that describes the major energetic pathways through the open water ecosystem from phytoplankton to apex predators. At the base are phytoplankton and protozoans which are the principal food resource for the biomass copepods and krill. Krill and the biomass copepods are the principal forage of the midwater fishElectrona antarctica which, in turn, is the central diet component of flying seabirds as well as important food for the Antarctic fur seal and cephalopods. Krill are a major diet element for the fur seal and cephalopods, and the principal food of the minke whale.  相似文献

A total of 208 strains of Aeromonas were isolated by monthly sampling from two estuaries (one provided with, and the other devoid of a waste-water treatment system) on the Italian coast of the Adriatic sea between September 1994 and August 1995. Biotyping at the species level allowed the identification of 96 strains (46%) as Aer. caviae , 46 (22%) as Aer. sobria , 33 (16%) as Aer. hydrophila and 25 (12%) as Aer. veronii . Eight strains (4%) were regarded as unnamed aeromonads. Aeromonas caviae was the most prevalent species in water with a high degree of pollution, while Aer. hydrophila strains were more commonly isolated from cleaner water. Aeromonas sobria and Aer. veronii were equally distributed in both estuaries. There was no correlation between temperature and numbers of aeromonads in either estuary. Using a biochemical fingerprinting method, strains were divided into similarity groups (PhP-types) based on their biochemical phenotypes. Several different PhP-types were found in each estuary, yielding a high diversity for these strains. However, some identical PhP-types were also found in both estuaries and at different times of the year, indicating that certain Aeromonas strains can survive more widely varying physico-chemical conditions. The production of toxins capable of causing cytoskeletal-dependent changes in the morphology of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells was detected in 14 strains and appeared to be dependent on the season.  相似文献

研究了 1999年春季覆盖渤海中部、渤海海峡及其邻近海域 30个测站两遍大面调查的浮游植物物种及其群落特征 ,共发现浮游植物 4门 33属 6 5种 (不包括未定名物种 ) ,以硅藻为主。优势种主要为 :冰河拟星杆藻 (Asterionellopsisglacialis)、虹彩圆筛藻 (Coscinodiscus oculus- iridis)、太阳双尾藻 (Ditylum sol)、刚毛根管藻 (Rhizosolenia setigera)、布氏双尾藻 (Ditylumbrightwellii)、中肋骨条藻 (Skeletonema costatum)、膜状缪氏藻 (Meuniera membranacea)、派格棍形藻 (Bacillaria paxillifera)、加拉星平藻 (Asteroplanus karianus)、圆海链藻 (Thalassiosira rotula)、卡氏角毛藻 (Chaetoceros castracanei)和尖刺伪菱形藻(Pseudo- nitzschia pungens)。细胞丰度的平面分布主要由浮游硅藻的分布所决定 ,其高值区分布在渤海中部靠近渤海海峡处。浮游甲藻在渤海海峡局部区域形成高值区。两遍大面站调查期间渤海浮游植物群落的结构变化较大 ,原因主要是春季以小细胞为主体的浮游植物群落物种演替较快 ,另外春季的大风过程对浮游植物的群落结构影响较大。两遍大面站调查期间浮游植物细胞丰度呈增长趋势 ,温度和硅酸盐浓度的增加是导致调查期浮游植物生长的重要因素。E5站浮游植物群落的分析表明 :春  相似文献

In order to test the response of phytoplankton to anthropogenic pressure, data of chlorophyll a concentration, phytoplankton abundance, and composition are analyzed in relation to anthropogenic pressure gradient and environmental variables such as temperature, salinity and nutrients. Investigated sites encompassed wide tropic range according to a preliminary determination of anthropogenic pressure, quantified through the LUSI index. Statistical analyses indicated nitrates and silicates as proxies of freshwater influence, and phytoplankton single metrics such as concentrations of chlorophyll a and abundances as indicators of anthropogenic pressure. Boundary values for different water quality classes for coastal waters under indirect freshwater influence (Type II) are obtained according to gradient between concentration of chlorophyll a and pressure index (LUSI), which empirically fit to exponential equation. The response of phytoplankton diversity was not linear, as the highest diversity was observed in the area with intermediate disturbance level. CCA analysis identified Skeletonema marinoii, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Guinardia flaccida, Leptocylindrus spp., Prorocentrum spp., Proboscia alata, Eutreptiella spp., and Pseudonitzschia spp. as local eutrophication indicators, whose abundances increased with nutrients loads.  相似文献

Based on the maritime data collected from 23°30'-33°00' N and 118°30'-128°00' E of the East China Sea (ECS) in four seasons during 1997-2000,the dynamics of medusae diversity and their causes were ana-lyzed.A total of 103 medusae species were identified,and these species mainly distributed in the southern and north-ern offshore areas of the ECS.Species diversity index (H') of medusae was higher in the south than those in the north,higher in summer and winter than in spring and autumn,and higher in offshore than in the nearshore areas.The species number was closely correlated with H' value,whereas the abundance of species had no significant rela-tionship with the diversity index.The lower H' value of the nearshore in spring and autumn resulted from the aggrega-tion of Muggiaea atlantica in the south nearshore and Diphyes chamissonis in the north nearshore.In addition,water temperature,followed by salinity,is the main envir-onmental factor influencing the distribution of species diversity.The H' value was related to the water temperature at the 10 m layer in winter and spring,and it was associated with the surface water temperature in summer and with the 10 m-salinity-layer in autumn.In spring and summer,the isoline distribution of H' value reflected the direction of the Taiwan Warm Current and the variation of the water masses in the ECS.In winter,the isoline of the H' value indicated the incursion of Kuroshio current.In conclusion,the H' isoline is an good indicator for water masses in ECS.  相似文献

Microzooplankton were sampled at five fixed stations in theopen waters of the northern Adriatic during four cruises in1989, nine in 1990, six in 1991 and 12 in 1992. Changes in thequalitative-quantitative composition, together with the spatial-temporaldistribution of the microzooplankton assemblages in the northernwaters of the open Adriatic, were the result of atypical oceanographicand productivity conditions in the entire region of this sea.Owing to low values of ciliated protozoa, which comprised only26% (1989) and 36% (1991) of the total number of microzooplankton,primary production cannot be controlled through grazing. Thismay possibly explain the occurrence of marine snow. The presenceof the larger mucous aggregates in the later phase causes asignificant decrease in the density of the naupliar copepodpopulation. Therefore, the usual dominance of copepods in summerdoes not occur and their development cycle is displaced to lateautumn. Consequently, only Olihona nana, a species of widerecological tolerance, comprised up to 73% of the total numberof postnaupliar copepods during the presence of mucous aggregatesin 1989. Thus, this small copepod plays an important role inthe processes of remineralization in the northern Adriatic.  相似文献

Summary Uptake rates of ammonium, nitrate and urea were measured during the EPOS leg 1 cruise to the Weddell Sea in October–November 1988 using the isotope 15N. Nitrate was the most important nitrogen source both for ice algae (f-ratio 0.88) and for phytoplankton in the water column (f-ratio 0.85). Indications of a gradual decrease in % new production with time were found in the outer marginal ice zone. Nitrogen uptake rates in ice algae from the sub-ice assemblage were light-limited at in situ irradiances. In winter, the isoline of the H′ value indicated the incursion of Kuroshio current. Vertical distribution and cyst production of the chain-forming,spring dinoflagellate Peridiniella catenata were studied throughoutthe spring season of 2000 in the coastal Gulf of Finland. Numbersof cells were monitored in the water column, and cyst sedimentationwas recorded using multiple sediment traps moored at three discretedepths. At the onset of the spring bloom, most of the populationwas situated in the euphotic zone. When the bloom progressed,the population was more evenly dispersed throughout the watercolumn. Coinciding with the decline of the spring bloom, afternitrogen depletion, a general reduction of cell size of P. catenataand a break-up of chains were observed. Resting cysts startedto appear shortly after the peak of the bloom, in sedimentationtraps moored at 30 and 40 m depth. Cysts were only retrievedfrom the uppermost sediment trap on three of the six samplingoccasions, constituting only a small proportion of all cystsproduced by P. catenata during spring. Our results suggest thatcyst production of this vertically migrating organism takesplace to a large extent in deep water layers and emphasizesthe necessity of whole water column monitoring in studies aimingto understand in situ life-cycle transformations of verticallymigrating dinoflagellates.  相似文献

Little is known concerning environmental factors that may control the distribution of virioplankton on large spatial scales. In previous studies workers reported high viral levels in eutrophic systems and suggested that the trophic state is a possible driving force controlling the spatial distribution of viruses. In order to test this hypothesis, we determined the distribution of viral abundance and bacterial abundance and the virus-to-bacterium ratio in a wide area covering the entire Adriatic basin (Mediterranean Sea). To gather additional information on factors controlling viral distribution on a large scale, functional microbial parameters (exoenzymatic activities, bacterial production and turnover) were related to trophic gradients. At large spatial scales, viral distribution was independent of autotrophic biomass and all other environmental parameters. We concluded that in contrast to what was previously hypothesized, changing trophic conditions do not directly affect virioplankton distribution. Since virus distribution was coupled with bacterial turnover times, our results suggest that viral abundance depends on bacterial activity and on host cell abundance.  相似文献
