We present data on chick growth and chick feeding in Wilson's storm-petrel (Oceanites oceanicus) in a colony on King George Island, South Shetland Islands. Chicks were repeatedly weighed and the weight differences over 24 h were corrected for metabolic loss in order to obtain an estimation of meal sizes. Chicks were fed on 93% of the nights (n=688 nights). The average meal size for a single feeding was 8.5 g. Chicks received on average 1.2 feedings per night. These results are compared with data for this species from other locations. There was a trend for increased meal sizes from northern to southern populations, parallel to an increase in the adult mass, indicating that Wilson's storm-petrels carry optimal meal sizes according to their body size and may take advantage of increased food abundance by increasing feeding frequencies. We describe chick growth and discuss the influence of egg size, hatching date and feeding frequency on chick growth. The egg size had a positive influence on tarsus growth and body mass of chicks. Later-hatched chicks started wing growth and finished mass growth at a younger age and reached lower peak masses, indicating that late chicks may adapt to the restricted breeding season in their Antarctic breeding grounds by a more rapid development, but will fledge with a lower degree of development and less resources. Procellariiform seabirds such as short-tailed shearwaters Puffinus tenuirostris accumulate large quantities of lipid during the nestling period. The functional significance of this pattern of development remains unclear, but has been related both to temporal variation in feeding conditions around the colony and to stochastic variation in the foraging success of individual parents. This paper examines temporal and age-specific variation in the pattern of food delivery to nestling short-tailed shearwaters, which have one of the lowest provisioning rates of any procellariiforms and are known to experience occasional long intervals between feeds. We assess whether variation in the provisioning rates of chicks was associated primarily with temporal variation in food delivery at the level of the colony or with stochastic variation in food delivery at the level of the individual. We then discuss this variability in the context of nestling obesity. For all but the youngest chick age-classes, individual meals delivered by adults averaged 141 g, which was 25% of adult body mass. The proportion of chicks fed each night was low (49%) and highly variable (coefficient of variation = 82%), which means that occasional long intervals between feeds would be expected to arise simply by chance. In keeping with this, intervals between feeding events for individual chicks followed a negative exponential distribution with a mean of 2 nights and a maximum interval of 13 nights. There was significant temporal variation in food delivery, but deviations from expected values for both feeding frequency and meal size were restricted to a small number of nights, included values both higher and lower than expected and did not persist for more than 2 nights in succession. These data suggest that even among those species with very low feeding frequencies and occasional long intervals between feeds, nestling obesity in Procellariiformes should be regarded as a response to chronic stochastic variability in food delivery at the level of the individual chick rather than as insurance against sporadic temporal variation at the level of the colony. The heat increment of feeding (HIF), a transient postprandial increase in metabolic rate, is the energy cost of processing a meal. We measured HIF in house wren chicks (Troglodytes aedon) ranging in mass from 1.6 to 10.3 g. This mass range (age 2–10 days) spanned a transition from blind, naked, ectothermic chicks through alert, endothermic birds with nearly complete feathering. We fed chicks crickets (2.7–10% of chick body mass) and determined HIF from continuous measurements of oxygen consumption rate (O2) before and after meals. At warm ambient temperatures (T a) of 33–36 °C, the magnitude of HIF (in ml O2 or joules) was linearly related to meal mass and was not affected by chick mass. HIF accounted for 6.3% of ingested energy, which is within the range of results for other carnivorous vertebrates. The duration of HIF was inversely related to chick mass; 10-g chicks processed a standard meal approximately twice as fast as 2-g chicks. HIF duration increased with increasing meal mass. The peak O2 during HIF, expressed as the factorial increase above resting metabolism, was independent of body mass and meal mass. Meal size of chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica) was estimated through weighing adult breeders before and after food transfer during the crèche phase. Mean meal size delivered by each parent was 630.2 ± 178.3 g and was independent of breeding date, number of chicks and sex. Only body size as estimated by flipper length had a significant effect on meal size, suggesting an advantage of large body size which allows maximization of food carried per visit. The pattern of chick feeding of the British storm-petrel Hydrobates pelagicus in a Mediterranean colony was examined by weighing chicks at 24-h intervals on different days during the nestling period. In order to calibrate daily mass increments (NET) against number of feedings, daily mass changes of chicks were regressed upon the sum of positive mass increments recorded overnight (SUM) during four nights. The average meal size delivered to chicks per night by one parent was 3.5 ß 1.3 g or 12% of adult weight. This was insufficient for sustaining constant chick mass during a day. On average 85% of chicks were fed each night, and the mean interval between feeds was 1.2 ß 0.5 nights. Nightly feeding frequencies differed among days, but this night-to-night variation was not related to meteorological conditions. Both food requirements necessary for chick body maintenance (zero-growth) and meal size were relatively constant for ages up to 59 days. However, feeding frequency decreased throughout the fledging period, accounting for agespecific variation in growth rates until fledging. Food requirement and feeding patterns at Benidorm were different from North Atlantic colonies. None the less, growth patterns were almost identical, suggesting adjustment to maintain chick body mass at a determined level, as food delivery to nestling appears to be regulated to chicks'nutritional requirements.  相似文献

The diet composition of king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) at Heard Island (53°05′S; 73°30′E) was determined from stomach contents of 98 adults captured as they returned to the island throughout 1992. During the two growth seasons, the diet was dominated by the myctophid fish Krefftichthys anderssoni (94% by number, 48% by mass). The paralepidid fish Magnisudis prionosa contributed <1% by numbers but 17% by mass. Mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari) accounted for 17% by mass of chick diet in late winter, when chicks were malnourished and prone to starvation, although its annual contribution to the penguins' diet was only 3%. Squid was consumed only between April and August; Martialia hyadesi was the commonest squid taken, comprising 40–48% of the winter diet. The remainder of the diet consisted of the squid Moroteuthis ingens and fish other than K. anderssoni. The energy content of the diet mix fed to the chicks varied seasonally being highest during the growth seasons (7.83 ± 0.25 kJ g−1) and lowest in winter (6.58 ± 0.19 kJ g−1). From energetic experiments we estimated that an adult penguin consumed 300 kg of food each, of which its chick received 55 kg during the 1992 season. The chicks received large meals at the beginning of winter (1.2 ± 0.3 kg) and during the middle of the second growth season (1.2 ± 0.3 kg), and their smallest meals in late winter (0.4 ± 0.1 kg). The gross energy required to rear a king penguin chick was estimated to be 724 MJ. The potential impact of commercial fisheries on the breeding activities of king penguins is discussed. Effects of summer food shortage on king penguin Aptenodytes patagonicus chicks were studied at South Georgia. Two cohorts were compared, fledging in the austral summers of 1992 (n = 32) and 1994 (n = 33) when availability of food was judged good and poor, respectively. The former cohort had a higher pre-fledging mean mass (12.78 kg vs ≤ 10.03 kg), fledged earlier (median 5 January vs 21 January), and a higher proportion was re-sighted within 2 years of fledging (28% vs 0%). Within 4 years, 47% of the former cohort had been re-sighted (i.e. post-fledge survival); in addition, one was observed at the Falkland Islands, and 22% had bred (i.e. recruitment) in their colony of origin. The re-sighted chicks of the 1992 cohort fledged earlier than those not re-sighted (median 24 December vs 10 January), but it remain unclear if they were heavier at fledging. All chicks in this study (n = 65) were marked with both transponders (subcutaneously implanted) and flipper bands (on one flipper), and no losses of any markings were found (controlled up to 4 years afterwards). Therefore, data on chick post-fledging survival and recruitment were not adjusted for losses of markings, as has been done in other studies. At South Georgia, the diet of Wilson's storm petrel was studied using the regurgitates of adults arriving to feed chicks. Feeding frequency and meal size were estimated by weighing chicks twice daily, or in some cases every 3 h during daytime. Crustaceans contributed 98% of the total number of individual items and 68% of the total weight consumed; fish, 1% of the number of items and 28% of the weight. The most abundant crustacean was the amphipod Themisto gaudichaudii, which accounted for 90% of the total number but only 44% of the total weight of crustaceans eaten. Most (79%) of the Themisto were juveniles. Euphausiids were much less numerous in the diet (5% by number) but were the main group by weight (55%); most (52%) were Antarctic krill, with juveniles and sub-adults (25–50 mm long) predominating. Mysids, copepods and barnacle larvae were also present. Fish were all myctophids (lanternfish), Protomyctophum normani and P. bolini being identified; specimens were 50–85 mm long and weighed 1–4 g. Meal sizes averaged 6-5-7-5 g (14–22% adult body mass); about 75% of chicks were fed each day (mainly at night), about 10% probably receiving meals from both parents. A review of storm petrel diets emphasizes the importance of fish to Oceanodroma species and of crustaceans to Oceanites, Garrodia and Pelagodroma. Euphausiids and amphipods (chiefly Themisto and Hyperia) are the main crustacean prey and range from 5–50 mm and 0-005-0-7 g. Myctophids are the main fish prey and range from 20–100 mm and 1–5 g. Meal size ranges from 15–25% adult body mass and chicks are fed on 50–85% of days. This low delivery rate is mainly responsible for the disproportionately slow growth and long fledging period of storm petrel chicks.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of forest fragmentation on the ability of parent birds to provide their young with an adequate food supply. To examine whether prey population densities of the great tit (Parus major L.) and the blue tit (P. caeruleus L.) vary between study areas in different forest size classes we compared provisioning rates and chick diet and related these parameters to breeding success. We filmed 217 nests over two breeding seasons and collected data on frass fall as a general estimate of caterpillar availability. Nests which were attended by none or one parent only during filming (n = 46) were excluded from the analyses. In both years and for both species feeding rates were highest in the smallest fragments and lowest in the large forest. There was also a suggestion that differences in feeding rates between areas vary between years. We found no consistent tendency for prey size to change with forest size, although both species brought slightly smaller prey items to the nest in the smallest forest fragments and feeding rates correlated negatively with prey size. Caterpillars were the main item fed to nestlings, in both species. We found no evidence to suggest that either frass fall or the proportion of caterpillars in the diet varied with forest size. There was also no correlation between mean frass fall and the total number of caterpillars brought to the nests, in either species. Breeding success, as measured by clutch size, brood size, fledging weight and fledging success, did not differ between the small fragments and the large forest, in either species. There was also no relationship between provisioning rate (as concerns volume of prey fed to nestlings and the quality of chick diet) and breeding success parameters. In conclusion, this study does not suggest suboptimal foraging or breeding conditions in small fragments compared to a nearby large forest, for either species. Procellariiform seabirds have a number of extreme life-history characteristics in common, in particular low reproductive rates and slow postnatal development, which are generally assumed to reflect the difficulty in acquiring energy in the marine environment. The wandering albatross (Diomedea exulans) is a sexually dimorphic species with the longest postnatal growth found in any bird, suggesting severe constraints on provisioning and possible sex-specific strategies of provisioning. We studied the provisioning behaviour and mass changes of male and female parent wandering albatross throughout the 9-months rearing period to examine how each sex adjusts its foraging effort in relation to the needs of the chicks and the seasonal changes in food availability. The study was carried out on the Crozet Islands, using an automated system recording continuously the attendance pattern of parents between March and December 1994. During the brooding period when energy requirements are highest, parents only perform trips of short duration to sea, and their body condition deteriorates. When the chick is old enough to be left alone, the parents mix short and long foraging trips. The proportion of short trips is very high until July, allowing high rate of food delivery and rapid growth, and at the same time the body condition of adults improves. From August this proportion declines until fledging in December. As a result, the feeding rate decreases from August and adult condition declines, suggesting that feeding conditions at sea are better during the first part of the chick-rearing period, i.e. in autumn and winter. Male parents perform more short trips of shorter duration and provide larger meals than females, delivering an estimated total after brooding of 110 kg of food, compared to 70–80 kg delivered by females. Meal size is inversely related to the body condition of male chicks but not to that of female chicks, suggesting that food delivery is regulated by the adults in response to the condition of the male chick. Male chicks received larger meals and more food every month than female chicks, and overall it was estimated that they receive, after brooding, 195 kg of food compared to 180 kg for the female. As a result, male chicks have a higher growth rate, attain a higher asymptotic mass, and are larger and heavier at fledging than female chicks. However, the differences are relatively small between the chicks of each sex and suggest that energy may be used differently between the sexes to maximise fitness. The results of the study suggest that provisioning effort of wandering albatrosses is adjusted by parents in relation to the availability of food, to the energetic needs of the chick and to the sex of the chick. The adult body mass is likely to play an important role in the long term for the regulation of provisioning, deficits in body mass probably providing the buffer in high power-requirement periods. The pattern of chick feeding in the Fulmar Fulmarus glacialis at St Kilda, Scotland, was examined by repeated weighing of chicks throughout 14 consecutive days during the first half of the chick-rearing period in 1994. After correcting for metabolic weight losses, the sizes of positive mass increments between weighings were used to assess meal sizes and feeding frequency for each chick. Individual meals fed to chicks averaged 80.8 g (s.d. ± 21.0 g), or approximately 10% of adult mass. Each chick received 0 to 4 meals per day, with an average of 1.9 meals per chick per day, giving an average interval of around 25 h between meals delivered by each parent. The distribution of time intervals between feeds for each chick (whether single or double meals) followed a negative exponential function with a maximum value of 80 h. These results are not compatible with the idea that the purpose of large fat deposits in procellariiform chicks is to guarantee survival over long intervals between feeds. Over 14 days, the chicks' mean daily food requirements for zero-growth increased from 98 g to 160 g. This corresponded with an increase in feeding frequency but not meal size. Chicks with lower scores for body condition after feeding by both parents received more meals during the subsequent 16 h and had shorter intervals to the next feed, indicating that adults regulated feeding frequency in accordance with chick condition at the previous feed. This does not agree with the hypothesis that lipid accumulation by nestling Procellariiformes is a response to stochastic variation in food delivery associated with an absence of regulation. In view of the diversity of growth and feeding patterns present among the Procellariiformes, it is possible that lipid accumulation in this group does not have a unitary explanation.  相似文献

For oceanic birds like king penguins, a major constraint is the separation of foraging areas from the breeding colony, largely because swimming increases foraging costs. However, the relationship between foraging strategy and breeding stage has been poorly investigated. Using time-depth recorders, we studied the diving behaviour of two groups of king penguins that were either incubating or brooding chicks at Crozet Islands (Southern Indian Ocean) at the same period of the year. Although birds with chicks had the highest predicted energy demand, they made foraging trips half as long as incubating birds (6 vs. 14 days) and modified their time and depth utilisation. Birds with chicks dived deeper during daylight (mean maximum depth of 280 m vs. 205 m for those incubating). At night, birds with chicks spent twice as much time diving as those incubating, but birds at both stages never dived beyond 30 m. Movements to greater depths by brooding birds are consistent with the vertical distribution of myctophid fish which are the main prey. As chick provisioning limits trip duration, it is suggested that it is more efficient for parents to change their diving patterns rather than to restrict their foraging range. The Purple Heron population in southern France suffered a 46% decline between 1981 and 1994. A study of breeding biology was instigated in 1997 in order to examine potential changes in the main breeding parameters between the early 1980s and the late 1990s. Here, we present data on the breeding biology and diet of breeding Purple Herons in the Camargue, southern France, collected from 1997 to 1999. These results were compared with those from a similar study conducted between 1979 and 1982. No difference in first spring arrival date on breeding grounds was noted between these two periods. Mean first egg date was 22 April during 1979–82, in contrast to 6 May during 1997–99. Mean colony size was c. 118 breeding pairs during 1979–82, but only c. 59 during 1997–99. For broods of three and four chicks, linear growth rates for rank A (first hatched) chicks were higher during 1979–82 than during 1997–99. For broods of four chicks linear growth rates were also higher for rank B (second hatched) chicks and tended to be higher for rank C (third hatched) but lower for rank D (fourth hatched) chicks. During 1979–82 nestling diet (determined from regurgitates) was dominated by fish (85.4% by biomass). There was an increase in the proportion of insects from 12.8% during 1979–82 to 21.7% in 1998 (from regurgitates), whereas the proportion of fish was 61.3% in 1998. Diet was determined from pellets in 1999 and indicated that 42.6% of the biomass was insects whereas 33.8% was fish. No difference was found between 1979–82 and 1997–99 for clutch size and hatchling mass. Results suggest that birds needed more time to initiate breeding during 1979–82 than during 1997–99. Possible causes for the observed differences in the Purple Heron breeding biology and diet between both study periods are discussed.  相似文献

Birds on migration often alternate between feeding and nonfeeding periods, in part because food resources may be patchily distributed and in part because birds on migration may adopt a risk-prone foraging strategy characterized by selection of variable rather than constant food rewards. Optimal digestion models predict that increases in intermeal interval like those encountered by some migratory birds should result in longer retention time of digesta and higher digestive efficiency if birds are maximizing their rate of energy intake. We tested these predictions by comparing residence time of digesta and extraction efficiency of lipid for captive yellow-rumped warblers (Dendroica coronata) feeding adlibitum and when we added intervals of time when the birds received no food. We increased the likelihood that the warblers were maximizing their rate of energy intake by increasing light levels during spring to induce hyperphagia (treatment birds (16L:8D light: dark cycle) ate 2.13 ± 0.14 g dry food day−1 (n = 8) while control birds (10L:14D) ate 1.25 ± 0.03 g dry food day−1 (n = 6)). Treatment birds offered food only every other 2–3 h ate 50% more during the 4-h test period than when they were always feeding adlibitum. Despite these differences in food intake, extraction efficiency of glycerol trioleate remained high and constant (93%), and mouth-to-anus total mean retention time (TMRT) did not change (overall mean: 54.8 ± 6.0 min). Residence time of lipid in the stomach increased whereas residence time of lipid in the intestine decreased when birds fed only every other 2–3 h compared to when birds always fed ad libitum. None of the results were consistent with the predictions of the optimal digestion model unless we assume that birds were minimizing their feeding time rather than maximizing their rate of energy gain. Furthermore, the ability of yellow-rumped warblers to maintain high extraction efficiency with no change in TMRT suggests some spare digestive capacity when food intake increases by as much as 50%. Consistent sex differences in foraging trip duration, feeding locality and diet of breeding Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) were demonstrated at two widely separated locations over several breeding seasons. Differences in foraging behaviour were most pronounced during the guard stage of chick rearing. Female penguins made on average longer foraging trips than males, ranged greater distances more frequently and consumed larger quantities of krill. In contrast, males made shorter journeys to closer foraging grounds during the guard period and fed more extensively on fish throughout chick rearing. Mean guard stage foraging trip durations over four seasons at Béchervaise Island, Eastern Antarctica and over two seasons at Edmonson Point, Ross Sea ranged between 31 and 73 h for females and 25 and 36 h for males. Ninety percent of males tracked from Béchervaise Island by satellite during the first 3 weeks post-hatch foraged within 20 km of the colony, while the majority (60%) of females travelled to the edge of the continental shelf (80–120 km from the colony) to feed during this period. We investigated the diet and aspects of foraging effort among Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) breeding at three colonies on Ross Island, in the southwestern Ross Sea – Capes Royds, Bird and Crozier – during the chick-provisioning period of three austral summers, 1994–1995, 1995–1996 and 1996–1997. During the study period, pack-ice cover differed in waters offshore of these colonies, by colony, seasons and year. Diet differed among colonies only slightly. The fish Pleuragramma antarcticum was the most important prey, especially during years or periods within years when little pack ice was present. With respect to krill, which composed the remainder of diet, juvenile Euphausia crystallorophias were consumed predominantly in a year of heavy pack-ice cover; more adult krill were consumed in 2 years when pack ice was sparse. Foraging trip duration differed by colony, season and year and was related directly to distance from the colony to the nearest pack ice. The amount of food brought to chicks increased as trip duration increased, to a point (2 days), but then decreased as duration increased further (up to 4 days). On the basis of data on mass of parents and of meal sizes to chicks, it appeared that on the longest trips more of the food gathered by parents was used for self maintenance; on the longest trips, parents lost body mass. Successful foraging during chick rearing, the period when adult foraging is most intense, appears to depend on the proximity of pack ice to nesting colonies for this penguin species. Summary. We previously reported that L-leucine suppresses myofibrillar proteolysis in chick skeletal muscles. In the current study, we compared the effects of L- and D-enantiomers of leucine on myofibrillar proteolysis in skeletal muscle of chicks. We also assessed whether leucine itself or its metabolite, α-ketoisocaproate (α-KIC), mediates the effects of leucine. Food-deprived (24 h) chicks were orally administered 225 mg/100 g body weight L-leucine, D-leucine or α-KIC and were sacrificed after 2 h. L-Leucine administration had an obvious inhibitory effect on myofibrillar proteolysis (plasma Nτ-methylhistidine concentration) in chicks while D-leucine and α-KIC were much more effective. We also examined the expression of the proteolytic-related genes (ubiquitin, proteasome, m-calpain and cathepsin B) by real-time PCR of cDNA in chick skeletal muscles. Ubiquitin mRNA expression was decreased by D-leucine and α-KIC but not L-leucine. Proteasome and m-calpain mRNA expressions as well as cathepsin B mRNA expression were likewise decreased by L-leucine, D-leucine and α-KIC. These results indicate that D-leucine and α-KIC suppress proteolytic-related genes, resulting in an decrease in myofibrillar proteolysis while L-leucine is much less effective in skeletal muscle of chicks, may be explain by conversion of D-leucine to α-KIC.  相似文献

We examined the effect of prey type, repeated stomach flushing, digestion time, and meal size on the assessment of dietary intake of captive adult Cory’s shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea). For each of Cory’s shearwaters’ main prey type (fish, cephalopod, and crustacea), we used three different meal sizes and four digestion times, stomach-flushing the birds 1, 4, 8, or 16 h after feeding. On average, fish and cephalopods showed similar percentages of mass recovery (between 23% and 33%), whereas crustaceans showed a recovery about 10–15% greater. Conversely, fish and crustaceans showed similar percentages of items recovered (between 52% and 77%), whereas cephalopods showed about 10–35% greater recovery rates. We found no significant differences in the percentage of individual prey items recovered and the interval between ingestion and recovery, over intervals ranging from 1 to 16 h.L.R. The effect of different aeration conditions during the culture of Azotobacter vinelandii on the production and molecular mass of alginate was evaluated in shake flasks. In baffled flasks, the bacteria grew faster and produced less alginate (1.5 g/l) than in conventional (unbaffled) flasks (4.5 g/l). The viscosity of the culture broth was also influenced by the type of flask. Higher final viscosities were attained in unbaffled flasks [520 cP (520 mPa s)] as compared to baffled flasks (30 cP). This latter phenomenon was closely related to the changes in the molecular mass distribution. In either cases, the mean molecular mass increased with culture age; however, at the end of the fermentation, the mean molecular mass of the alginate obtained in unbaffled flasks was fivefold higher than that obtained in baffled flasks. As the culture proceeded, the cells of Azotobacter grown in unbaffled flasks increased in diameter, whereas those cultured in baffled flasks decreased in size. Molybdenum Content of Canadian and US Infant Formulas   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Molybdenum is an essential trace nutrient in the human diet. Our purpose was to provide a comprehensive analysis of Mo content of various types of powdered infant formulas across Canada and the USA. All infant formulas, available on the day of sampling, were purchased from random supermarkets in Grand Forks, ND, USA; San Diego, CA, USA; Washington, DC, USA; and Winnipeg, MB, Canada. Reference powdered milk, human milk (HM), and formula samples were weighed and acid-digested prior to analysis by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy. Mo content in all formulas ranged from 15.4 to 80.3 μg/L (mean ± SE, 37.7 ± 1.7 μg/L). HM Mo concentration ranged from 1.5 to 9.5 μg/L (5.09 ± 0.81 μg/L). Formulas intended for full-term or for premature infants feeding contained, on average, more Mo than HM. Formulas intended for infants with special needs contained similar mean Mo levels to HM. No significant differences were detected between mean Mo values of formulas of a same type purchased from different brands and/or at different locations. High Mo intake may pose health risks, despite lower bioavailability of Mo from formula compared with HM.  相似文献
