Autotomy, voluntary shedding of body parts to permit escape, is a theoretically interesting defense because escape benefit is offset by numerous costs, including impaired future escape ability. Reduced sprint speed is a major escape cost in some lizards. We predicted that tail loss causes decreased speed in males and previtellogenic females, but not vitellogenic females already slowed by mass gain. In the striped plateau lizard, Sceloporus virgatus , adults of both sexes are subject to autotomy, and females undergo large increases in body condition (mass/length) during vitellogenesis. Time required for running 1 m was similar in intact autotomized males and previtellogenic females, but increased by nearly half after autotomy. Vitellogenic females were slower than other lizards when intact, but their speed was unaffected by autotomy. Following autotomy, speeds of all groups were similar. Thus, speed costs of autotomy vary with sex and reproductive condition: decreased running speed is not a cost of autotomy in vitellogenic females or presumably gravid females. Costs of autotomy are more complex than previously known. Speed and other costs might interact in unforseen ways, making it difficult to predict whether strategies to compensate for diminished escape ability differ with reproductive condition in females.  相似文献

Male northern water snakes (Nerodia sipedon) have high variancein reproductive success relative to females. We used DNA-basedpaternity analyses from a 3-year study of two marsh populationsof water snakes to investigate the factors that contributeto variation in male success. Male traits investigated includedbody size, condition, tail length, home range size, activityduring the mating season, and genetic profile (genetic similarityto females, heterozygosity, and genetic variability [d2]).We successfully assigned > 80% of offspring to sires froma sample of 811 offspring from 45 litters. Male reproductivesuccess did not vary significantly with body size, tail length,condition, home range size, or the number of microsatelliteloci at which males were heterozygous, nor with other featuresof their genetic profiles. However, we found evidence of positive assortative mating by size in the marsh in which receptive femaleswere not spatially clumped. Also, males that were most activeduring the mating season were more successful, particularlywhere females were not clumped. We failed to find evidenceof selection acting on male size through variance in reproductivesuccess, indicating that sexual selection does not have an important influence on sexual size dimorphism in this species(males are smaller than females). We propose that males aresmaller than females because the lack of advantage to largesize allows males to adopt a low-energy, low-growth strategythat reduces their risk of predation outside the mating season.  相似文献

Darwin first identified female choice and male—male competitionas forms of sexual selection resulting in the evolution of conspicuoussexual dimorphism, but it has proven challenging to separatetheir effects. Their effects on sexual selection become evenmore complicated when sperm competition occurs because spermprecedence may be either a form of cryptic female choice ora form of male—male competition. We examined the effectsof tail height on male—male competition and female choiceusing the sexually dimorphic red-spotted newt (Notophthalmusviridescens viridescens). Experiment 1 examined whether maletail height influenced male mating success. Males with deeptails were more successful at mating with females than thosewith shallow tails. Successful, deep-tailed males also were bigger(snout-vent length; SVL) than unsuccessful, shallow-tailed males,but they did not vary in tail length or body condition. Of these,only tail height and tail length are sexually dimorphic traits.Experiment 2 tested the hypothesis that the differential successof males with deeper tails was due to female choice by examiningboth simultaneous female preference for association and sequentialfemale choice. We found no evidence of female choice. When maleswere not competing to mate with females, tail height did notinfluence male mating success. Successful males did not havedifferent SVL and tail lengths than unsuccessful males. Thus,tail height in male red-spotted newts appears to be an intrasexuallyselected secondary sexual characteristic. Experiment 3 usedpaternity exclusion analyses based on molecular genetic markersto examine the effect of sperm precedence on sperm competitionin doubly-mated females. Sperm precedence likely does not havea pervasive and consistent effect on fertilization success becausewe found evidence of first, last, and mixed sperm usage.  相似文献

We hypothesized that the presence of the forked hemipenes, and associated musculature, at the base of the tail in male lizards should constrain the capacity to autotomize the tail. Thus, this hypothesis predicts that the non-autotomous base of the tail should be longer in male than in female lizards. We tested this hypothesis in four species oflacertid lizards. Males have on average one to two non-autotomous vertebrae more than females, and the sexual difference in length of the non-autotomous tail base remains constant over the entire body size range. In addition, the first functional autotomy plane in males is usually located on, or is distal to, the vertebrae from which two hemipenial muscles take origin. These observations support the view that functional demands of the male intromittent organs impose constraints on the abilities of tail autotomy. In a natural population of Lacerta vivipara , the proportion of tail breaks that occurred at very short distances from the base was highest in females, indicating that the small sexual difference in length of the non-autotomous tail part is of functional significance. Total length of the tail was largest in males. This can be interpreted as a compensation for the decline in autotomy capacities at the tail base, such that the length of the autotomous part remains similar in both sexes.  相似文献

Tail autotomy is a defense against predators used by many lizard species but is associated with various costs, most of which have been measured only in the laboratory. We conducted a field experiment in which we induced tail autotomy to approximately half (58%) of a marked sample (n=326) of Uta stansburiana from western Texas in the fall, and left the other half with intact tails. The following spring we determined survival, measured growth, and brought females to the laboratory to allow them to oviposit their eggs, which we incubated until hatching. Based on past studies, we anticipated inferior survival, growth, and reproduction following tail autotomy. We also predicted that females with tail loss would be energetically compromised and would alter the sex ratio of their offspring toward more daughters (as predicted by the Trivers-Willard hypothesis). Tailless lizards experienced significantly reduced survivorship, but those that survived grew the same as their tailed counterparts. Tailed and tailless females produced clutches equivalent in number of eggs and total mass. Whereas tailed females showed a significant positive relationship between average egg mass and snout-vent length, tailless females did not. Contrary to our expectations, tailless females produced heavier hatchlings than tailed ones, and sex ratios of hatchlings were equivalent for tailed and tailless females. In this population, tail loss in subadults leads to an increased risk of death, but apparently does not impose an energetic handicap such that later growth and reproduction suffer. We suggest that because tailless females are faced with decreased reproductive value, they respond by growing as much and laying as many eggs of the same mass as tailed females, despite the fact that they are also regenerating the tail. In addition, they somehow produce larger hatchlings than tailed females. Nevertheless, tailless females probably end up with lower overall lifetime fitness than tailed females, and tail loss thus induces the conditional reproductive strategy ”make the best of a bad situation”. Because tailless females produce larger, not smaller, hatchlings, they do not produce more daughters as predicted; i.e., we found no evidence for the Trivers-Willard effect following tail autotomy. Phenotypic quality may determine the development and expressionof secondary sexual characters. We studied the relationshipbetween molt and several measures of phenotypic quality in thesexually size-dimorphic barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) in itswinter quarters in Namibia. Males were in a more advanced stageof molt than females and juveniles, and the speed of molt asdetermined from the residual of the regression of the size ofthe gap in wings caused by missing and growing feathers on wingmolt score (residual wing raggedness) was also higher in malesthan in females and juveniles. Male barn swallows with longand symmetric tail feathers had a more advanced stage of moltand molted at a higher speed than males with short and asymmetrictails. Long-tailed females had a delayed molt, and females withasymmetric tails had less advanced molt and lower rates of feathergrowth than females with symmetric tails. Molt of secondariesin juveniles also appeared to be less advanced if they had longtails. Adult barn swallows molted their tail feathers in anirregular sequence with the longest, outermost tail featherusually replaced before the second or the third outermost feathers.Good body condition was positively associated with a high moltscore for some feather tracts and a rapid wing molt in adultfemales and tail molt in juveniles. Mallophaga were only weaklynegatively associated with primary and secondary molt scorein adult females and speed of wing molt in adult males. In conclusion,phenotypic quality of adult male barn swallows as reflectedby the expression of their secondary sexual character duringthe previous molt reliably reflected stage and speed of currentmolt.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown no significant effect of experimentaltail length manipulation in female barn swallows (Hirundo rustica)at the beginning of a breeding season on reproductive successor behavior during that breeding season. In the present study,we investigate if tail length manipulation had any effect onreproductive performance the following year, the so-called long-termeffect, in contrast to the short-term effects already studied.We found that females with experimentally elongated externaltail feathers at the beginning of a breeding season producedless offspring during the breeding season the following yearthan did females with shortened or unmanipulated tails. Theseresults suggest that tail elongation caused flight deficienciesthat deteriorated the condition of females and eventually reducedreproductive success. The finding of long-term effects but nosignificant short-term effects for female tail elongation suggeststhat female barn swallows have the ability to adjust immediateparental investment. Detrimental effects of long tails in femalesin terms of decreased reproductive success might explain whyfemale tails are not as long as those of males. Finally, femalesmated to long-tailed (sexually attractive) males decreased theirreproductive success the following year more than did femalesmated to short-tailed males, possibly owing to differentialparental effort causing a deterioration of their condition.  相似文献

Among sexually dimorphic, polygynous mammals, adult femalestend to outlive males and respond more strongly to predatorsthan males. We asked whether a monomorphic, polygynous speciesvirtually immune to predation due to large size (black rhinoceros,Diceros bicornis) conforms to this pattern. Data on 193 interactionswith lions (Panthera leo) and spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta)in two nonhabituated populations in Namibia studied from 1991to 1993 revealed that: (1) females were more vigilant or aggressivethan males to either of the potential predators; and (2) whethersolitary or with calves, females attacked more often than males.Although solitary females tended to be more aggressive to lionsthan to hyenas, neither females with calves or males seemedto discriminate between the two carnivores. We also simulatedthe behavior of human predators (poachers) during 69 encounterswith rhinoceroses. While both sexes abandoned local sites becauseof our presence, females ran farther than males, covering upto 40 km in a day. These findings implicate a behavioral mechanismto explain why secondary sex ratios favor females - males aremore prone to human predation, a prediction consistent withdata from 12 populations throughout Africa. Black rhinocerosesappear to be an unanticipated exception to the well-establishedpattern of male-biased mortality in polygynous mammals; in theabsence of intense human predation (a recent event), male mortalityfails to exceed that of females, suggesting that intrasexualcompetition in a polygynous mammal: may not be the primary causeof unbalanced secondary sex ratios. Our results on the causesof sex differences in mortality and in responsiveness to differentpredators reinforce the relevance of behavioral ecology to conservation;such information is necessary for planning how best to minimizenegative human influences on the few remaining wild Africanrhinos.  相似文献

The chalcid wasps (Hymenoptera) that develop in fig tree inflorescences(Ficus: Moraceae) have often been used to study alternativereproductive behaviors. However, recent work suggests that suchbehaviors are more complex than previously thought. We investigatedthis in Otitesella longicauda and O. rotunda. In addition toknown dimorphisms in the two species (each have "religiosa"males that use their mandibles to fight for mates in the fig,and "digitata" males that disperse from the fig to mate), wefound that religiosa males below species-specific body sizeswitch points have relatively larger mandibles and are lesssclerotized than those above. Thus, they are actually trimorphic.We suggest that the religiosa morph variation is linked to fighter/nonfighteralternative mating behaviors, with small (nonfighting) maleshaving relatively larger mandibles because they also use themto pull females out of their galls before mating. Also, we investigatedthe determinants of wasp body size, and whether females (foundresses)adjust their offspring allocation strategies according to expectedoffspring size. We found that wasp size is larger in ovariesnear the center of the fig, and more females and fewer religiosamales are laid in such ovaries than in those further away. Thisprobably indicates that foundresses lay females when they areexpected to be large because their fitness is more body size–dependentthan that of religiosa males. We then discuss the implicationsof our findings for the study of alternative reproductive behaviorsand foundress offspring allocation strategies.  相似文献

Exaggerated tail feathers of birds constitute a standard exampleof evolution of extravagant characters due to sexual selection.Such secondary sexual traits are assumed to be costly to produceand maintain, and they usually are accompanied by morphologicaladaptations that tend to reduce their costs. The aerodynamiccosts for male barn swallows Hirundo rustica of having longtails were quantified using aerodynamics theory applied to morphologicaldata from seven European populations. Latitudinal differencesin tail length were positively correlated with differences inflight costs predicted by aerodynamics theory. A positive relationshipbetween aerodynamic costs of long tails and the degree of sexualsize dimorphism was found among populations. Latitudinal differencesin foraging costs may result in tail length being relativelysimilar in males and females in southern populations, whereasthe low foraging costs for males in northern populations mayallow them to cope with higher aerodynamic costs, giving riseto large sexual size dimorphism. Enlargement of wingspan inmales can alleviate but not eliminate the costs of tail exaggeration,and therefore differences in aerodynamic costs of male ornamentswere maintained among populations. Sexual size dimorphism in thebarn swallow arises as a consequence of latitudinal differencesin the advantages of sexual selection for males and the costsof long tails for males and females.  相似文献

Abstract Antipredator mechanisms employed by animals are obviously beneficial if they increase survival, but their use may be costly and decrease fitness. Fitness costs of antipredator mechanisms may, in turn, be defrayed by behavioural compensation. We used lizards as a model to measure behavioural fitness costs of the antipredator mechanism, autotomy, as they commonly lose their tails when attacked by predators. In addition, we examined whether male skinks, Carlia jarnoldae (Scincidae), behaviourally compensate for tail loss by comparing the behaviour of tailed and tailless males in experimental enclosures, either alone, with a conspecific male or female, or with a predator. Tailless males experience several costs of autotomy including reduced energy stores, and loss of autotomy as a defence. We identified an additional cost of tail loss: reduced mating success. However, this species did not behaviourally compensate these costs. Instead, characteristics of the ecology of C. jarnoldae may minimize the costs of autotomy. This species experiences an extended breeding season, which means that they experience reduced mating success for only 20% of this breeding season. Additionally, the presence of inguinal fat stores which supply energy in addition to stores in the tail reduce energetic costs.  相似文献

Males of many lizard species have longer tails than similarly-sized females. We hypothesized that this dimorphism is induced by a longer non-autotomous tail part in males, which is associated with the presence of the copulatory organs at the tail base, and presumably reduces the males' ability to escape predation by tail shedding. A compensatory mechanism would be an increase of total tail length in males, to achieve equal lengths of the autotomous tail part in both sexes. A critical prediction of this 'morphological constraint' hypothesis is that the extent of dimorphism in total tail length increases with the magnitude of sexual differences in length of the non-autotomous tail base. We tested this prediction through a comparative study in a small clade of lacertid lizards. Within each of nine species, sexual differences in length of the non-autotomous tail base and in total tail length do not change with body size. All species, except one, exhibit a clear male-biased dimorphism in length of the non-breakable tail base. In all species studied, males have longer tails than females. We used the method of phylogenetically independent contrasts to explore the interspecific relation between dimorphism in length of the tail base and sexual differences in total tail length. Contrary to our prediction, we found no evidence for a positive correlation between the extent of dimorphism in both traits. Thus, constraints imposed by the male copulatory organs on tail autotomy do not seem to be a significant factor in the evolution of dimorphism in tail length in this clade of lacertid lizards.  相似文献

The degree and direction of sexual dimorphism varies widely,but in several taxa of orb-weaving spiders, including Nephila,males may be less than one-tenth the size of females. This differenceis commonly attributed to selection through precopulation sexualcannibalism: females may either fail to detect very small males,or ignore them as potential prey items. However, there is oftenthe potential for male-male competition in these species becauseseveral males can be found on the web of a single female. Weinvestigated experimentally the effects of sexual cannibalismand male-male competition on male body size and hence sexualdimorphism in the Australian golden orb-weaver (Nephila plumipes).Small males were less likely to be detected and cannibalizedthan larger males. However, larger males excluded small malesfrom the central hub of the web, where mating takes place. Theconflicting effects of sexual cannibalism and male-male competitionmay be responsible for the relatively large variation in malebody size in this species.  相似文献

We examined the function of the vertical bar pattern on maleswordtails (Xiphophorus multilinneatus) as a signal in bothmale-male competition and female choice. This pattern had previouslybeen described as an aggressive signal because males intensifiedthe bars during male-male encounters in the laboratory. Ourfield observations supported this observation and also showedthat bars intensified when males courted females. The intensityof bars was correlated with access to females in the field.Within the size range of males that have bars, however, neitherbar number nor male size appeared to influence access to females.We used freeze-branding to remove the bars from males in thelaboratory so that we could control for characters correlatedwith bar intensity, and tested males and females separatelyso that we could separate the influence of these two componentsof sexual selection. We compared the responses of males andfemales to males that had their bars removed and control malesfreeze-branded between the bars. Test males responded more aggressivelyto males without bars as compared to control males. In addition,females showed a preference for control males over males thathad their bars removed. These results suggest that the barsmay function as a signal that deters rival males and attractsfemales.  相似文献

The handicap hypothesis of honest signaling suggests that secondarysexual characters reliably reflect phenotypic or genotypic qualityof signalers. This hypothesis is based on the assumptions thatsignals are costly to produce and/or maintain and the cost ofa given level of signaling is higher for low quality than forhigh quality signalers. We tested these assumptions in a fieldexperiment in which the size of a secondary sexual character[tail length in male barn swallows (Hirundo rustica)] was experimentallymanipulated. Males were randomly assigned to tail elongation,tail shortening, or two control treatments (tail manipulation,or just capture, ringing, and handling). Male barn swallowswere challenged with an injection of sheep red blood cells,and blood was sampled on the day of first capture and after3 to 4 weeks for determination of concentrations of gamma-globulins.Tail-elongated males did not increase levels of gamma-globulinswhile males of the other three groups demonstrated increases.Analyses of variation in gamma-globulins within treatment groupsrevealed a positive correlation between gamma-globulins andoriginal tail length among males with elongated tails. Theseresults suggest that tail length imposes an immu-nocompetencecost on males, and that males with naturally long tails aredifferentially better able to cope with this cost.  相似文献

We used a factorial experiment to examine interacting effectsof male density, female density, and sunfish (predation risk)on mating dynamics of the stream water strider (Aquarius remigis).Many of our results corroborated earlier studies on the isolatedeffects of each factor on mating behavior. The effect of eachfactor, however, depended on the other factors. For example,in low density pools, predation risk decreased male generalactivity, male/female harassment rates, mating activity, andmating duration and increased the large male mating advantage.At higher densities, however, water striders apparently enjoyed"safety in numbers" and did not alter their mating dynamicsin response to the presence of predators. Female activity showeda particularly complex response to male density and fish. Whenmales were scarce, fish caused females to reduce their activity.However, when males were abundant, fish increased female activity,probably because fish decreased male activity thus releasingfemales from harassment by males. The three treatment factorsalso had interacting effects on male mating success. In theabsence of fish, when females were scarce, increased male densityresulted in a decrease in mean male mating success; however,when females were abundant, increased male density enhancedmean male mating success. In contrast, in the presence of fish,male density had little effect on male mating success. Manyof the observed mating patterns can be explained by the effectsof ecological and social factors on male/female conflicts; thatis, on male harassment of females and female reluctance to mate.  相似文献

Male black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) may receive damage to theirtail ornaments, the lyre, during goshawk predation attemptsand during fights with other males. In this study we confirma previous observation that black grouse males with damagedtail ornaments suffer reduced mating success. In males thatheld territories on the edge of the leks, tail damage was unrelatedto mating success, whereas in central males damage was negativelycorrelated with mating success. We tested experimentally whetherabsence of damage is used by females in mate choice. In maleswith edge territories, intact, control males had higher matingsuccess than males with cut tails, but in males with centralterritories, lyre cutting had no effect on mating success. Theseresults suggest two interpretations. First, female choice alsodepends on factors other than tail damage such as position onthe lek and dominance. Second, the effect of tail damage iscontext dependent; in males that otherwise meet females standards(e.g., dominant males), the effect of tail damage is negligible,but in less dominant males, tail damage could be used by femalesin mate selection. The second interpretation provides an explanationfor why the data on unmanipulated and manipulated birds differ.In experimental central birds, factors other than tail damageprobably determine male mating success, whereas in experimentaledge birds such factors are probably absent and therefore taildamage is relatively more important. In central unmanipulatedbirds, however, males with natural damage are probably not chosenbecause tail damage and absence of other attractive traits arecorrelated. Organisms generally have many defenses against predation, yet may lack effective defenses if from populations without predators. Evolutionary theory predicts that “costly” antipredator behaviors will be selected against when predation risk diminishes. We examined antipredator behaviors in Aegean wall lizards, Podarcis erhardii, across an archipelago of land-bridge islands that vary in predator diversity and period of isolation. We examined two defenses, flight initiation distance and tail autotomy. Flight initiation distance generally decreased with declining predator diversity. All predator types had distinctive effects on flight initiation distance with mammals and birds having the largest estimated effects. Rates of autotomy observed in the field were highest on predator-free islands, yet laboratory-induced autotomy increased linearly with overall predator diversity. Against expectation from previous work, tail autotomy was not explained solely by the presence of vipers. Analyses of populations directly isolated from rich predator communities revealed that flight initiation distance decreased with increased duration of isolation in addition to the effects of current predator diversity, whereas tail autotomy could be explained simply by current predator diversity. Although selection against costly defenses should depend on time with reduced threats, different defenses may diminish along different trajectories even within the same predator–prey system.  相似文献

The occurrence of autotomy was investigated in five terrestrialslug species. Half of the Dcroceras reticulatum and 80 per centof the Limax tenellus slugs which were stimulated mechanicallyin the tail, autotomized the tail. Anon fasciatus, Anon subfuscusand Limax cinereoniger did not show any signs of being ableto autotomize. The autotomized tail of D. rcticulatum and L.tenellus was small compared to the total body weight and alsoto the weight of many predaceous beetles. D. reticulatum andL. tenellus escaped in a few seconds after the beginning ofmechanical stimulation; the reaction time was significantlyshorter than that used by species which did not autotomize theirtail. Comparison between A. fasciatus and D. reticulatum alsoshowed that D. reticulatum sought for refuges significantlymore effectively than A. fasciatus. The exposure of D. reticulatumto the beetle Ptero-stichus mger indicated that autotomy canstop a beetle long enough to let the slug escape. It seems thatautotomy has evolved more frequently in those species whichrely to a great extent on escaping and hiding when defendingthemselves, than in species whose physiology and/or environmentdo not enable them to hide quickly after an attack. Summary This study is the first to demonstrate experimentally that autotomy (self-amputation of a body part) adversely affects competition for mates. Experiments were conducted using blue crabs Callinectes sapidus Rathbun to examine the consequences of limb loss and pairing precedence on mate acquisition by males. Two adult males of equivalent size were introduced sequentially into pools containing a sexually-receptive female and observed after 24 h and 48 h. One male in each pair was left intact, while the other experienced: (1) no autotomy, (2) autotomy of one cheliped, or (3) autotomy of both chelipeds, one walking leg, and one swimming leg. In the absence of a competitor (first 24 h), both intact and injured males established precopulatory embraces with females. Intact males were highly successful (84–95%) in defending females from intact or injured intruders in the second 24 h period. Both autotomy treatments, however, significantly reduced the ability of males to defend females from intact intruders. Females in experiments suffered greater frequency of limb loss than did males. In the field, paired blue crabs showed significantly higher incidence of limb loss than unpaired crabs. Limb loss frequency increases with body size, and field observations indicated that larger males may be more successful than smaller males in obtaining females. Both experimental manipulations and field studies provide strong evidence for mate competition in this ecologically and commercially important portunid species.  相似文献
