Laboratory assays indicated that infective-stage juveniles of Neoaplectana carpocapsae are highly pathogenic to Simulium spp. larvae. Instar susceptibility increased with larval size, with early instars being nonsusceptible. High rates of mortality (75 – 100%) were achieved in assays against late instars. These results indicate that N. carpocapsae may have potential value as a blackfly biocontrol agent.  相似文献

Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. is native to North America, and was unintentionally introduced into China in the 1930s, where it has become invasive. The two insect species Epiblema strenuana and Ophraella communa have been considered as biological control agents of A. artemisiifolia in China. The purpose of this study was to examine the control effect of O. communa + E. strenuana on A. artemisiifolia in the field. The mortality of A. artemisiifolia plants increased with time and increasing initial release densities of O. communa and/or E. strenuana in 2008 and 2009. The treatments of 0.53 O. communa + 0.53 E. strenuana per plant and 12 O. communa + 16 E. strenuana per plant at early (60–70 cm tall) and later (90–100 cm tall) growth stages could subsequently kill all plants prior to seed production in both 2008 and 2009. Thus, the two initial densities of the two insect species may be recommended when they are jointly used for biological control of A. artemisiifolia at the two growth stages. However, all or some plants could survive and bear seeds in any other treatment and in the non-treated control plots. This implies that biological control of A. artemisiifolia with the two biological control agents will be recommended in the areas invaded by A. artemisiifolia in China.  相似文献

Laboratory trials of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (serotype 14) and B. sphaericus strain 1593 against field-collected Aedes stimulans showed that susceptibility declined with increasing instar and decreasing temperature. Test results with B. sphaericus were more erratic than with B. thuringiensis, and the efficacy of the former declined more rapidly with decreasing temperature. B. thuringiensis was significantly more active than B. sphaericus under all treatment conditions. These results indicate that the effective use of this strain of B. sphaericus as a mosquito biological control agent may be limited to warm water situations against more susceptible species.  相似文献

Among six strains of Bacillus thuringiensis and five other species of Bacillus, only two strains of B. thuringiensis, strains HD-1 and BA-068, were toxic to Aedes aegypti larvae within 24 hr. The LC50s were 5.6 × 104 and 2.4 × 105 spores/ml for strains HD-1 and BA-068, respectively. The toxic factor(s) was heat sensitive and γ ray resistant and preliminary evidences indicated that it was associated with the crystalline body of B. thuringiensis.  相似文献

This paper gives suggestions forunifying the terminology in biological controlacross different research disciplines, such asbiological control of arthropods, weeds andplant pathogens. It is suggested that use ofthe term `biological control' is restricted tothe use of living organisms. Four strategiesof biological control are outlined anddefined: (1) Classical biological control, (2) Inoculation biological control, (3) Inundationbiological control, and (4) Conservationbiological control. It is proposed to usethese four terms as defined, and avoid usageof the term `augmentation'. Terms for specificprocesses and modes of action (for example,`parasitoid' and `competitor') can be definedby usage within the different biologicalcontrol disciplines. Microbial control usuallyindicates biological control of invertebratesusing microbes and, as such, is a subdivisionof biological control. Two newly developed media, H4 and H7, were found to be highly suitable for culturing Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis and B. sphaericus, respectively. These media contained 0.05% K2HPO4 and 4% HDL (H4 medium) or 0.05% K2HPO4 and 7% HDL (H7 medium); HDL is the by-product from a monosodium glutamate factory. Tests to compare endospore formation and toxicity values of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis in H4 medium and nutrient broth supplemented with salts and glucose (NBSG) medium were carried out in a 3-liter fermentor. The viable cell count and LC50 value of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis in H4 medium at 48 hr were 2.5 × 108 cells/ml and 10?7.2 (dilution), respectively, while those in NBSG medium were 1.6 × 108 cells/ml and 10?6.5, respectively. In the case of B. sphaericus grown in H7 medium, the number of cells and LC50 value were found to be 1.4 × 109 cells/ml and 10?7.8, respectively. B. sphaericus grown in nutrient broth supplemented with salt and yeast extract (NBSY) were found to produce 6.4 × 108 cells/ml and an LC50 value of 10?6.8. The toxicity of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis was tested against Aedes aegypti larvae, while that of B. sphaericus was tested against Culex quinquefasciatus. The cost of 10 liters of medium for production of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis and in B. sphaericus and H4 and H7 was $0.02 and $0.03, respectively. The cost of these newly developed media was much less than that of NBSG medium ($7.05 per 10 liters) for cultivation of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis and NBSY medium ($11.67 per 10 liters) for cultivation of B. sphaericus.  相似文献

Many isolates of the saprophytic fungus Epicoccum nigrum produce yellow compounds that diffuse readily into culture media. Historically, two such compounds have been identified; flavipin and epirodin both reported to have antimicrobial properties. Preliminary studies on 280 New Zealand isolates of E. nigrum confirmed that all but two produced a yellow, intensely pigmented substance in sufficient amounts to inhibit the germination of Botrytis cinerea conidia. The compound produced by the inhibitory isolates is epirodin, a polyene antibiotic. Five representative E. nigrum isolates were selected for further investigation. Two of these produced relatively large amounts of epirodin and, in a diffusible metabolite assay, reduced germination of B. cinerea conidia by up to 94%. Another isolate produced a trace amount of epirodin and had no effect on the germination of B. cinerea conidia or on germ tube morphology. The two remaining isolates produced intermediate amounts of epirodin and were only moderately inhibitory to the germination of B. cinerea conidia and to germ tube morphology. In slide dual‐culture experiments, epirodin appeared to concentrate in conidia and mycelia of B. cinerea. In acid conditions, as on dual‐culture slides of E. nigrum and B. cinerea, the yellow‐coloured epirodin underwent a hypsochromic shift, changing colour to become red. The relationship between epirodin production and the suppression of Botrytis growth and development was further investigated using necrotic kiwifruit leaf discs. The E. nigrum isolate that produced the greatest amount of epirodin almost completely inhibited the growth and development of B. cinerea on the leaf discs. In contrast, the efficacy of E. nigrum isolates which produced less epirodin ranged from 78% to just 23%. This is the first report of epirodin production by New Zealand isolates of E. nigrum, and we conclude that isolates that produce high concentrations of epirodin may have potential for plant disease control.  相似文献

Eighty soil samples of different origin (from urban, agricultural, forested and horticultural areas) which had not previously been treated with bioinsecticides, were collected and examined to investigate the presence of Bacillus thuringiensis and B. sphaericus. From a total of 1473 bacterial isolates examined by differential staining techniques and growth on nutrient agar with the addition of penicillin and streptomycin, 31 (2.1%) strains of Bacillus sphaericus and 25 (1.6%) strains of Bacillus thuringiensis were isolated. These strains were tested for their pathogenicity against Diptera (Culex quinquefasciatus) and Lepidoptera (Anticarsia gemmatalis and Spodoptera frugiperda). Seven strains of Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki were found to be pathogenic to Spodoptera frugiperda and twenty-two strains showed a pathological effect against Anticarsia gemmatalis. None of the strains of Bacillus thuringiensis nor the Bacillus sphaericus investigated, showed pathogenic activity against Culex quinquefasciatus. The strains of Bacillus thuringiensis were characterized serologically as belonging to six serotypes (darmstadiensis, entomocidus, kurstaki, muju, sotto and xianguangiensis). One strain seemed to be a new serotype. The electrophoretic profiles of the strains of Bacillus thruringiensis showed bands of 130 kDa similar to those found in strains pathogenic against Lepidoptera. Some physicochemical characteristics were also studied in the soil samples, in order to relate them to the presence or absence of these Bacillus species.  相似文献

During the years 1975–1982, the “Israel Cohen” Inst. for Biological Control conducted a biological control project, against the black scale,Saissetia oleae (Olivier) (Homoptera: Coccidae). Seventeen species of natural enemies were introduced into Israel during that period, and their action reduced the populations of the pest to an acceptable level. The major parasitoid responsible for that transition wasMetaphycus bartletti Annecke &; Mynhardt (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae). 植物表面的毛可分为单细胞毛和多细胞毛(一般是腺毛)两大类。它们对植物上的螨类有直接或间接的影响。植物表面毛的作用可分为物理作用和化学作用:物理作用有影响活动、提供附着物(防止从叶面脱落)、提供隐蔽环境(防止捕食者捕食)、改善微环境(主要是维持叶面湿度)或捕捉并维持补充食物量(如花粉、菌类孢子)等形式;化学作用是毛本身所含的或受害螨为害后被诱导产生的化学物质对螨的生长发育和存活产生的影响,或作为有害螨存在的信号对捕食螨发挥作用。关于植物表面的毛对螨类的影响,国内研究得很少。国外的研究多数集中于各种植物上的毛对二斑叶螨Tetranychusurticae等害螨和智利小植绥螨Phytoseiuluspersimilis等捕食性螨的影响。植物表面的毛对螨类的影响很复杂。充分理解各种植物上的毛对螨类的影响可以获得关于害螨生物防治的重要启示。  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of Ophiomyia camarae was determined in three ecological regions, i.e., highveld, middleveld, and lowveld of Swaziland. Within each region, sites were selected based on Lantana camara L. density, with 10 plants randomly chosen per sampling site. Ten leaves from each shrub were collected and assessed for any damage caused by the herringbone leaf-miner. Relative abundance, based on the number of shrubs damaged by the herringbone leaf-miner, was scored per site. Three lantana varieties were observed during the sampling period. There were significant differences in mean leaf damage due to leaf-miner activity between varieties (P=0.0162), with 46±4.89% leaves of the pale pink variety damaged compared to 23±5.56 and 21±3.53% leaves of the orange and pink varieties, respectively. While there were no restrictions in terms of distribution, the highest levels of O. camarae populations were observed in the middleveld (P=0.0012), suggesting that this region had the most suitable environmental conditions for this natural enemy. Overall, the abundance was significantly different between regions (P=0.006) and months (P=0.000), with April scoring the highest population levels. Based on our observations, the variation in environmental conditions has an influence on the activity of O. camarae, with the middleveld having the most suitable conditions  相似文献

The degrees of suppression produced by vermicomposts produced from cattle manure, sheep manure or horse manure and by vermicomposts produced from sewage sludge were compared in greenhouse experiments. The effect of these vermicomposts on the growth and infection of tomato seedlings by Phytophthora nicotianae var. nicotianae was studied. The density of the pathogen and the number of micro-organisms in container media amended with vermicomposts were also analysed. The vermicomposts produced from animal manure significantly reduced the infection of tomato seedlings by the pathogen. The density of P. nicotianae in media which included these vermicomposts was similar to that in infested peat substrate (control treatment). The vermicomposts from sewage sludge did not protect tomato seedlings against P. nicotianae . They also significantly inhibited growth of the plants as well as decreasing the density of the pathogen in container media. In general the vermicomposts had no effect on total number of micro-organisms in potting media compared with control. They only had higher levels of actinomycetes but this did not appear to correspond with their ability to suppress the pathogen.  相似文献

Sitona lineatus L., the pea leaf weevil, is an invasive pest of Pisum sativum L. (field pea) that has recently become established in Alberta, Canada. Adults consume seedling foliage and larvae feed on Rhizobium root nodules thereby reducing nitrogen fixation; both life stages can reduce yield. Eggs and adults are vulnerable to predators and parasitoids. In 2009, a series of experiments was undertaken to identify potential indigenous natural enemies of S. lineatus in southern Alberta. In three test arenas, eggs were exposed to starved ground beetles in no‐choice tests for 48 h. Egg debris was observed when eggs were exposed to Bembidion quadrimaculatum L., Microlestes linearis (LeConte), Bembidion rupicola (Kirby), Bembidion timidum (LeConte), Poecilus scitulus LeConte, and staphylinid beetles. Of the two most abundant carabid species, the smaller B. quadrimaculatum consistently removed significantly more eggs (94.6%) than the larger Pterostichus melanarius (17.4%). Similar results were observed in Petri dish and egg card tests. No egg debris was observed in tests with Pt. melanarius. Presence of the larger beetle, Pt. melanarius, resulted in a lower rate of egg removal by the smaller B. quadrimaculatum relative to the rates observed for B. quadrimaculatum alone. Intraguild predation of B. quadrimaculatum by Pt. melanarius was observed in 47% of tests. These results suggest that B. quadrimaculatum is a potential predator of S. lineatus eggs in field pea agroecosystems and should be considered for use in conservation biological control and integrated pest management programs.  相似文献
