Water movement from roots to soil at night in the process of hydraulic lift (redistribution) rehydrates the rhizosphere and has been proposed to improve plant nutrient acquisition. Another process that has now been found in many plant species is nighttime transpiration and this could also affect nutrient relations by influencing supply of mobile nutrients to roots at night. The effects of these soil/root water relations interactions have not been adequately tested. We chose ten Sarcobatus vermiculatus (Hook.) Torrey shrubs with different magnitudes of hydraulic lift (i.e. diel range in soil water potential) to test the hypothesis that the magnitude of lift would be positively related to the amount of nitrogen (N) uptake over a period of days. A 15N tracer was injected in the 20–30 cm soil layer at locations with hydraulic lift to determine plant 15N acquisition by shallow roots conducting hydraulic lift. Half of the plants were also placed in large humidified tents (i.e. “bagged”), which suppressed nighttime transpiration, and thus were expected to have greater magnitudes of hydraulic lift, although they did not. All plants took up the 15N tracer, but contrary to our hypothesis the magnitude of hydraulic lift had no significant effect on the amount of 15N acquired over a 9-day period following labeling. However, plants that were bagged tended to have lower 15N acquisition (P = 0.07). These data indicate that decreased nighttime transpirational water loss or some other effect of bagging may decrease nutrient acquisition by these nutrient-limited phreatophytic shrubs and more generally suggests a possible nutritional benefit of nighttime transpiration by plants. This suggestion needs more thorough testing to elucidate an important potential link between plant water and nutrient relations.  相似文献

Theories on visual perception agree that visual recognition begins with global analysis and ends with detailed analysis. Different results from neurophysiological, computational, and behavioral studies all indicate that the totality of visual information is not immediately conveyed, but that information analysis follows a predominantly coarse-to-fine processing sequence (low spatial frequencies are extracted first, followed by high spatial frequencies). We tested whether such processing continues to occur in normally aging subjects. Young and aged participants performed a categorization task (indoor vs. outdoor scenes), using dynamic natural scene stimuli, in which they resorted to either a coarse-to-fine (CtF) sequence or a reverse fine-to-coarse sequence (FtC). The results show that young participants categorized CtF sequences more quickly than FtC sequences. However, sequence processing interacts with semantic category only for aged participants. The present data support the notion that CtF categorization is effective even in aged participants, but is constrained by the spatial features of the scenes, thus highlighting new perspectives in visual models.  相似文献

We have examined the molecular weight and rotational correlation time of human thioredoxin by analytical ultracentrifugation and NMR spectroscopy, respectively. Two variants of human thioredoxin were studied, namely human thioredoxin identical in amino acid sequence to the one whose NMR structure we previously determined (C62A, C69A, C73A, M74T) and human thioredoxin (C62A, C69A, C73A, M74) containing the wild-type amino acid methionine at position 74. In both cases, the experimental data indicate that the predominant species is monomeric and we find no evidence for the existence of a well-defined dimeric form as was observed in the recently reported crystal structure (Weichsel et al., 1996) of human thioredoxin and the C73S mutant.  相似文献

Nitric oxide (NO) has been reported to be luteolytic based on treatment of cows in vivo with an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS-produces NO), which delayed the decline in progesterone by two to three days [Jaroszewki J, Hansel, W. Intraluteal administration of a nitric oxide synthase blocker stimulates progesterone, oxytocin secretion and prolongs the life span of the bovine corpus luteum. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of a long acting NO donor or a NOS inhibitor infused chronically into the interstitial tissue of the ovarian vascular pedicle adjacent to the ovary with a corpus luteum on secretion of progesterone during the ovine estrous cycle. Ewes were treated either with Vehicle (N=5); Diethylenetriamine (DETA-control for DETA-NONOate; N=5); (Z)-1-[2-(2-aminoethyl)-N-(2-ammonioethyl) amino]diazen-1-ium-1,2-diolate (DETA-NONOate-long acting NO donor; N=6); or l-nitro-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME-NOS inhibitor; N=6) every 6 h from 24:00 h (0 h) on day 8 through 18:00 h on day 18 of the estrous cycle. Jugular venous blood was collected every 6h for analysis for progesterone and corpora lutea were collected at 18:00 h on day 18 and weighed. Weights of corpora lutea were heavier (P< or =0.05) in DETA-NONOate-treated ewes when compared to Vehicle, DETA, or l-NAME-treated ewes, which did not differ amongst each other (P> or =0.05). Profiles of progesterone in jugular venous blood on days 8-18 differed (P< or =0.05) in DETA-NONOate-treated ewes when compared to Vehicle, DETA, or l-NAME-treated ewes did not differ (P> or =0.05) amongst each other. It is concluded that NO is not luteolytic during the ovine estrous cycle, but may instead be antiluteolytic and prevent luteolysis.  相似文献

The evolutionary approach to the issue of ADHD derives from the assumption that what is regarded as a pathological phenomenon today was once an adaptive response to the conditions of life in the ancestral stages of human development. The paper argues against this conception on the basis of the clinical picture of ADHD. The author believes that in the previous "natural" conditions the ADHD syndrome was even more of a maladaptation than in the "protective" conditions of present-day life.  相似文献

The paradox recently raised by Wang and Yuan (Proteins 2000;38:165-175) in protein structural class prediction is actually a misinterpretation of the data reported in the literature. The Bayes decision rule, which was deemed by Wang and Yuan to be the most powerful method for predicting protein structural classes based on the amino acid composition, and applied by these investigators to derive the upper limit of prediction rate for structural classes, is actually completely the same as the component-coupled algorithm proposed by previous investigators (Chou et al., Proteins 1998;31:97-103). Owing to lack of a complete or near-complete training data set, the upper limit rate thus derived by these investigators might be both invalid and misleading. Clarification of these points will further stimulate investigation of this interesting area.  相似文献

The hypotheses that try to explain mobbing behaviour can be divided into three main classes: altruistic behaviour, parental care and selfish behaviour. To try to distinguish between these hypotheses, I presented 12 Arabian babblers,Turdoides squamiceps , with a snake model, both alone and together with another babbler. Seven components of mobbing were compared in the two situations. Single babblers that were exposed to a snake model carried out mobbing-like behaviour. Mobbing in the absence of an audience or additional participants shows that it is basically a selfish behaviour, and suggests that it is an antipredator behaviour. No difference was found between males and females, and mobbing by two participants together was more intensive than mobbing by each of them on its own. These findings support the prey-predator communication hypothesis. However, the different hypotheses explaining mobbing are not exclusive, and this study does not exclude other hypotheses as secondary explanations. Objective:

Clinical evidences reported subclinical alterations of thyroid function in obesity, although the relationship between thyroid status and obesity remains unclear. We cross‐sectionally investigated the influence of metabolic features on hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid axis in obesity.

Design and Methods:

We enrolled 60 euthyroid subjects with no history of type 2 diabetes mellitus and assessed the relationship of thyroid function with insulin resistance, measured using euglycemic clamp, and abdominal fat volume, quantified by computed tomography scan (CT scan). Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) correlated with BMI (r = 0.46; P = 0.02), both visceral (r = 0.58; P = 0.02) and subcutaneous adipose tissue volumes (r = 0.43; P = 0.03) and insulin resistance (inverse relationship with insulin sensitivity–glucose uptake: r = ?0.40; P = 0.04).

Results:

After performing multivariate regression, visceral adipose tissue volume was found to be the most powerful predictor of TSH (β = 3.05; P = 0.01), whereas glucose uptake, high‐density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low‐density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, subcutaneous adipose tissue volume, and triglycerides were not. To further confirm the hypothesis that high‐normal TSH values could be dependent on adipose tissue, and not on insulin resistance, we restricted our analyses to moderately obese subjects' BMI ranging 30‐35 kg/m2. This subgroup was then divided as insulin resistant and insulin sensitive according to the glucose uptake (≤ or >5 mg·kg?1·min?1, respectively). We did not find any statistical difference in TSH (insulin resistant: 1.62 ± 0.65 µU/ml vs. insulin sensitive: 1.46 ± 0.48; P = not significant) and BMI (insulin resistant: 32.2 ± 1.6 kg/m2 vs. insulin sensitive: 32.4 ± 1.4; P = not significant), thus confirming absence of correlation between thyroid function and insulin sensitivity per se.

Conclusion:

Our study suggests that the increase in visceral adipose tissue is the best predictor of TSH concentration in obesity, independently from the eventual concurrent presence of insulin resistance.

Two conflicting hypotheses have been proposed to explain large‐scale species diversity patterns and dynamics. The unbounded hypothesis proposes that regional diversity depends only on time and diversification rate and increases without limit. The bounded hypothesis proposes that ecological constraints place upper limits on regional diversity and that diversity is usually close to its limit. Recent evidence from the fossil record, phylogenetic analysis, biogeography, and phenotypic disparity during lineage diversification suggests that diversity is constrained by ecological processes but that it is rarely asymptotic. Niche space is often unfilled or can be more finely subdivided and still permit coexistence, and new niche space is often created before ecological limits are reached. Damped increases in diversity over time are the prevalent pattern, suggesting the need for a new ‘damped increase hypothesis'. The damped increase hypothesis predicts that diversity generally increases through time but that its rate of increase is often slowed by ecological constraints. However, slowing due to niche limitation must be distinguished from other possible mechanisms creating similar patterns. These include sampling artifacts, the inability to detect extinctions or declines in clade diversity with some methods, the distorting effects of correlated speciation‐extinction dynamics, the likelihood that opportunities for allopatric speciation will vary in space and time, and the role of undetected natural enemies in reducing host ranges and thus slowing speciation rates. The taxonomic scope of regional diversity studies must be broadened to include all ecologically similar species so that ecological constraints may be accurately inferred. The damped increase hypothesis suggests that information on evolutionary processes such as time‐for‐speciation and intrinsic diversification rates as well as ecological factors will be required to explain why regional diversity varies among times, places and taxa.  相似文献

Imprinted genes are monoallelically expressed in a parent-of-origin-specific manner, but for many genes reported to be imprinted, the occurrence of preferential expression--where both alleles are expressed but one is expressed more strongly than the other in a parent-of-origin-specific way--has been reported. This preferential expression found in genes described as imprinted has not been thoroughly addressed in genomic imprinting studies. To study this phenomenon, 50 genes, reported to be imprinted in the mouse, were chosen for investigation. Preferential expression was observed for 21 of 27 maternally expressed genes. However, only 5 of 23 paternally expressed genes showed preferential expression. Recently, it has been reported that a remarkable proportion of non-imprinted genes show differential allelic expression. If there is overlap between non-imprinted genes that are differentially expressed and imprinted genes that are preferentially expressed, we need to set new definitions of imprinted genes that, in turn, would probably lead to reassessments of the total number of imprinted genes in mammalian species.  相似文献

Starting from this line of thought, we review some recent developments in understanding the stochastic behavior of biological systems.
