The bifid mandibular condyle has been described as a condition of unknown ætiology and uncertain pathogenesis. Many see it as the product of accidental trauma or forceps delivery, with the two heads occurring one behind the other in the sagittal plane.

In bioanthropological literature, “bifid condyle” often describes pitting in the sagittal plane, dividing the condyle mediolaterally.

We examined 38 male and 16 female pre-European-contact Pacific islanders’ adult mandibles, and 24 male and 29 female modern Indian mandibles, recording frequency, prominence and position of any condylar groove in both coronal and sagittal planes.

We report the tenth known case of a bilaterally-bifid condyle. A groove was found almost twice as likely to occur on the left condyle of the Indians than of the Pacific Islanders, but equally likely to occur on the right side of both groups. That same finding applied to males and females.

In order to avoid terminological ambiguity, we suggest that the term “bifid condyle” should be reserved for describing multiple condyles in the sagittal plane only – the true bifid condyle.

The aim of this study was to examine the protection of the yeast lacking the “antioxidant-like” prion precursor protein (Ure2p), by antioxidants and to elucidate how modification of redox homeostasis affects toxicity of agents inducing oxidative stress in the Δure2 cells. We found a diverse ability of a range of antioxidants to ameliorate the hypersensitivity of the Δure2 disruptant to oxidants and heavy metal ions. Glutathione and then ascorbate were the most effective antioxidants; Tempol, Trolox and melatonin were much less effective or even hampered the growth of the Δure2 cells exposed to tested agents. The intracellular level of ROS was augmented in the Δure2 mutant under normal growth conditions (1.7-fold), and after treatment with H2O2 (2.3-fold) and Cd(II) (2.8-fold), with respect to its wild-type counterpart. Glutathione was unable to prevent the increase in ROS production caused by CdCl2. The Δure2 disruptant was also hypersensitive to heat shock, like mutants lacking glutathione S-transferases.  相似文献

Stable isotope analyses of fossil teeth and other authigenic minerals have been used to reconstruct the paleoenvironment and paleoelevation of the Tibetan Plateau. The accuracy of such reconstructions is limited by the lack of a comprehensive modern comparative database from the region. We analyzed the carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions (δ13C and δ18O values) of tooth enamel from modern herbivores, the δ13C values of grasses and the δ18O values of water samples collected from various elevations within the Tibetan Plateau to examine their relationships with modern environment/elevation. The δ13C values of enamel samples from horses, yaks and goats display a narrow range of variation, with a mean of − 10.7 ± 1.4‰ (n = 301), indicating that these modern herbivores were feeding predominantly on C3 plants, consistent with the current dominance of C3 vegetation in the region. Some of the samples have δ13C values between − 7.3 and − 10‰. Although these higher δ13C values could suggest consumption of some C4 plants by the animals, the lack of significant seasonal δ13C variations within individual teeth indicates that these higher enamel δ13C values are due to consumption of C3 plants experiencing water stress and/or some CAM plants rather than C4 plants. Our data show that the conservative “cut-off” δ13C value for a pure C3 diet within the Tibetan Plateau should be − 8‰ for modern herbivores and − 7‰ (or even − 6.5‰) for fossils if the region was as arid in the past as today. In contrast to the small intra-tooth δ13C variations within individual teeth, serial enamel samples display large intra-tooth δ18O variations, reflecting seasonal variations in the δ18O of meteoric water. The mean δ18O values of tooth enamel from yaks and horses show a strong correlation with water δ18O values, confirming that the δ18O of tooth enamel from obligate drinker generally tracks the δ18O of meteoric water. Unfortunately, elevation alone cannot explain most of the variance in the δ18O of precipitation and tooth enamel, suggesting that quantitative reconstruction of the paleoelevation of the Tibetan Plateau using re-constructed δ18O values of paleo-meteoric water from fossil enamel or other oxygen-bearing minerals is not warranted. For a given environment, horses have the lowest enamel–δ18O values while goats display the highest enamel–δ18O values among the species studied. The large inter-species δ18O variations are likely due to differences in physiology and diet/drinking behavior of the animals. This underscores the importance of species-specific studies when interpreting δ18O data of fossil mammalian teeth in a stratigraphic sequence as a record of paleoclimate changes.  相似文献

Similarity problems intensively investigated in computational molecular biology have the following two stringology models: find the longest string included in any string of a given finite language, and find the shortest string including every string of a given finite language. These two problems are exemplified by the two well-known pairs of problems, the longest common subsequence (or substring) problem and the shortest common supersequence (or superstring) problem. interpretations.

In this paper we consider opposite problems connected with string non-inclusion relations: find the shortest string included in no string of a given finite language and find the longest string including no string of a given finite language. The predicate “string is not included in string β” is interpreted either as “ is not a subsequence of β” or as “ is not a substring of β”. The main purpose is to determine the complexity status of the non-similarity problems. Using graph approaches, we present NP-hardness proofs for the first interpretation and polynomial-time algorithms for the second one. Special cases of the problems, and related issues are discussed.  相似文献

The Tyr-MIF-1 family of small peptides has served a prototypic role in the introduction of several novel concepts into the peptide field of research. MIF-1 (Pro-Leu-Gly-NH2) was the first hypothalamic peptide shown to act “up” on the brain, not just “down” on the pituitary. In several situations, including clinical depression, MIF-1 exhibits an inverted U-shaped dose–response relationship in which increasing doses can result in decreasing effects. This tripeptide also can antagonize opiate actions, and the first report of such activity also correctly predicted the discovery of other endogenous antiopiate peptides. The tetrapeptide Tyr-MIF-1 (Tyr-Pro-Leu-Gly-NH2) not only shows antiopiate activity, but also considerable selectivity for the mu-opiate binding site. Tyr-W-MIF-1 (Tyr-Pro-Trp-Gly-NH2) is an even more selective ligand for the mu receptor, leading to the discovery of two more Tyr-Pro tetrapeptides that have the highest specificity and affinity for this site. These are the endomorphins: endomorphin-1 is Tyr-Pro-Trp-Phe-NH2 and endomorphin-2 is Tyr-Pro-Phe-Phe-NH2. Tyr-MIF-1 proved, contrary to the then prevailing dogma, that peptides can be saturably transported across the blood–brain barrier by a quantifiable transport system. Unexpectedly, the Tyr-MIF-1 transporter is shared with Met-enkephalin. In the era in which it was doubtful whether a peripheral peptide could exert CNS effects, the Tyr-MIF-1 family of peptides also explicitly showed that they can exert more than one central action that persists longer than their half-lives in blood. These peptides clearly illustrate that the name of a peptide restricts neither its actions nor its conceptual implications.  相似文献

Yeast cells harvested from aerobic or anaerobic culture are able to synthesize considerable amounts of Zn-protoporphyrin, by aeration of resting cells in phosphate buffer (pH 8).

In yeast cells harvested from aerobic growth, Zn-protoporphyrin accumulation inhibits respiratory activity and produces some letality. In yeast cells harvested from anaerobic growth this accumulation produces both a strong inhibition of cytochrome biosynthesis and of respiratory adaptation, accompanied by an important letality.

Zn-protoporphyrin is accumulated into the mitochondrial fraction and causes a total inhibition of O2 consumption by isolated mitochondria. The “in vitro” addition of purified Zn-protoporphyrin to intact mitochondria induces a lost of respiratory control.  相似文献

Increased ATP/ADP ratio resulting from enhanced glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation represents a plausible mechanism controlling the glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) in pancreatic β-cells. Although specific bioenergetics might be involved, parallel studies of cell respiration and mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) during GSIS are lacking. Using high resolution respirometry and parallel ΔΨm monitoring by two distinct fluorescence probes we have quantified bioenergetics in rat insulinoma INS-1E cells representing a suitable model to study in vitro insulin secretion. Upon glucose addition to glucose-depleted cells we demonstrated a simultaneous increase in respiration and ΔΨm during GSIS and showed that the endogenous state 3/state 4 respiratory ratio hyperbolically increased with glucose, approaching the maximum oxidative phosphorylation rate at maximum GSIS. Attempting to assess the basis of the “toxic” effect of fatty acids on insulin secretion, GSIS was studied after linoleic acid addition, which diminished respiration increase, ΔΨm jump, and magnitude of insulin release, and reduced state 3/state 4 dependencies on glucose. Its effects were due to protonophoric function, i.e. uncoupling, since without glucose, linoleic acid accelerated both state 3 and state 4 respiration by similar extent. In turn, state 3 respiration increased marginally with linoleic acid at 10–20 mM glucose. We conclude that upon glucose addition in physiological range, the INS-1E cells are able to regulate the oxidative phosphorylation rate from nearly zero to maximum and that the impairment of GSIS by linoleic acid is caused by mitochondrial uncoupling. These findings may be relevant to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes.  相似文献

Alpha-amylase of B. amyloliquefaciens was used for the structural characterization of the amylopectin from waxy-rice starch. Fractions of -dextrins with a degree of polymerization (d.p.) <5000 were isolated from amylopectin hydrolysates after 1 and 3 h. φ,β-Limit dextrins were prepared by successive phosphorolysis and beta-amylolysis of the fractions and these were analysed by a second alpha-amylolysis. Based on the hydrolysis pattern, the limit dextrins were divided into two major groups, A and B, which possessed units of clusters of d.p. 100–200 and 90–130, respectively. An extensive alpha-amylolysis resulted in characteristic distributions of dextrins with d.p. <80 which represented branched building blocks. Type A dextrins possessed more larger building blocks with d.p. 40, but less intermediate and small blocks, than type B. The φ,β-limit dextrin of the original amylopectin had a distinct distribution enriched in small building blocks. A model is proposed in which the two types of dextrins originate from regular and less regular structural domains of the amylopectin fraction within the starch granules.  相似文献

1. 1.|An experiment was carried out to examine the effects of various levels of infra-red (i.r.) radiation on rectal temperature (RT) and respiration rate (RR) in New Zealand While rabbits.

2. 2.|A 4 × 3 × 6 factorial design was employed in which the factors were: four intensities of i.r. radiant heating of 0.0, 1.9, 2.1 and 2.4 MJ/m2/h, three replicates and six rabbits.

3. 3.|rectal temperature differed (P < 0.05) between treatments and were highest at the “high” level of i.r. radiation (1°C higher than for controls). At the “medium” and “low” levels of i.r. heating RTs were respectively 0.3 and 0.2°C higher than in controls.

4. 4.|At different levels of radiation RR were different (P < 0.05), with the highest (422.7 ± 218.1 breaths/min) at 2.4 MJ/m2/h i.r. radiant heating. This RR was almost 2.5 times that in controls, while at the “low” and “medium” i.r. levels RR values were respectively 1.5 and 2 times those of controls.

The interaction of β1 integrin receptors and different extracellular matrix molecules during neuronal development was investigated by comparing both migration and morphological differentiation of D3 wild-type embryonic stem (ES) cell line-derived neural precursor cells with those of the β1 integrin knockout ES cell line G201. Analysing neurosphere explants on laminin and fibronectin as major β1 integrin ligands, the maximal spreading of outward migrating neuronal cells was determined. Compared with gelatine as a standard substrate, migration was found to be significantly increased for D3-derived neurospheres on fibronectin and laminin-1. These matrix effects were found to be even enhanced for G201 preparations. In addition, also the differentiation of wild-type and β1 integrin −/− neurones – as determined by MAP-2- and HNK-1-immunoreactive processes – was found to be increased on fibronectin and laminin when compared to gelatine standards. In the respective knockout preparations on these matrices, again perturbation effects were less pronounced than on gelatine. Our observations indicate that laminin and fibronectin are involved both in β1 integrin-dependent and -independent signalling mechanisms during neurogenesis. Upregulation of compensatory mechanisms such as β1 integrin-independent receptors for laminin and fibronectin might be responsible for the much less pronounced perturbations of G201 neural precursor migration and differentiation on these two substrates than on gelatine.  相似文献

The rate of in vitro Nicotiana tabacum L. “Bel-W3” pollen tube growth was reduced 62 and 44%, respectively, when pollen tubes were exposed to 120 ppb ozone (O3) for 3 hr or 300 μW/cm2 ultraviolet-B (u.v.-B) radiation for 30 min. Petunia hybrida Vilm. “White Cascade” pollen tube growth was reduced 34 and 59%, respectively, upon exposure to O3 or u.v.-B at the above doses. The combination of u.v.-B at 300 μW/cm2 for 30 min, followed by O3 at 120 ppb for 3 hr, reduced pollen tube growth by 79% for “Bel-W3” and 75% for “White Cascade”. The effect appeared to be additive, implying that different target areas may be affected by the two stressors. In the Northeast, plants are exposed to both u.v.-B and O3 during the normal growing season. This may result in an unexpectedly higher stress on the reproductive system than had been previously suspected based on these two stressors acting individually.  相似文献

1. 1. We propose a hierarchical model as a hypothesis to evaluate comfort in lighting environments.

2. 2. The model consists of physical quantities such as stimuli, and visual sensations as the first response, and then overall evaluation.

3. 3. A pilot experiment in a side-lit classroom usng 147 subjects was made to examine this model.

4. 4. It was found that in the side-lit classroom the most effective answers for discrimination between “acceptable” and “not acceptable” were “the surface of desk was not considered dark” and “not to experience any reflectance of lighting on the sheet of paper on which they wrote”.

5. 5. Moreover all of the effective items relate to the task area, namely desk and blackboard, and this meant that subjects gave priority to workability in the classroom.

Estrogens are indicated as being the most important etiological factors for the development and progression of breast cancer. The implication of estrogen in breast cancer has been associated mostly with the estrogen receptors that mediate cell proliferation. Evidence also exists to support the hypothesis of a direct role of estrogens as tumor initiators. However, the role of estrogen genotoxicity in breast cancer is still questionable.

In this study the genotoxic activity of catecholestrogens and 16-hydroxy estrone has been investigated by performing Salmonella strain TA98 and TA100 Ames tests, sister chromatide exchange assays (SCE) and micronucleus assays on human peripheral lymphocytes (CBMN and ARA/CBMN). We found a lack of positive results with micronucleus assays, except for 2-hydroxy estradiol (2-OHE2), which shows a peculiar “bell shaped” trend of micronucleus number versus concentrations. SCE assay suggests weak genotoxic activity of all tested catechol metabolites, except 4-hydroxy estrone (4-OHE1), which also showed negative results by ARA/CBMN.

In this open debate, our results support the hypothesis of a weak genotoxicity, not correlated with the carcinogenetic potential of estrogens.  相似文献

Kinetics of the absorption change of P700 (blue band) and cytochrome f in whole cells of a blue-green alga, Plectonema boryanum, have been studied by Q-switched ruby-laser flash excitation (694 nm; approx. 20 nsec) to elucidate the sequential relationship of these two components in photosynthetic electron transport. “P700” was photooxidized within 2 μsec and recovered in two phases t1/2 10 μsec and 200 μsec). Under the same conditions cytochrome f was oxidized with a half time of 15 μsec. The magnitude of the fast phase of “P700” recovery, however, diminished at lower laser intensity while the cytochrome f change remained unaffected. The result suggests that cytochrome f and P700 may not be on the same electron-transport chain.  相似文献

1. 1. Features of life history strategies of Antarctic terrestrial invertebrates are reviewed and compared with the predictions of two widely-used general life history models.
2. 2. Many features observed are consistent with the predictions of “adversity-” or “stress-selected” life histories, although “ruderal” characteristics are also observed.
3. 3. Many features are plesiotypic for the taxonomic groups concerned, suggesting a lack of evolved adaptations within the Antarctic biota.
4. 4. A large degree of flexibility is found in the life histories; this flexibility itself may allow passage of environmentally-imposed selective filters limiting colonisation and development in isolated and extreme terrestrial habitats.
5. 5. In general, Antarctic terrestrial invertebrates may be regarded as pre-adapted for survival of the various stresses imposed by their extreme environment.

The “Microtitre” Fluctuation test recently introduced for the detection of direct mutagens has been adapted for the detection of indirect mutagens through the incorporation of an “S9-mix” metabolic system. It compares favourably with Greens' original method for the detection of a range of chemical mutagens.

The technique has been employed in the evaluation of mixed enzyme induction using phenobarbitone and β-naphthoflavone (benzoflavone). as a safe substitute for Aroclor-1254. The post-mitochondrial preparations from rats induced with the combined inducers had a similar “metabolic competence” to those derived from Aroclor induced animals. Such a combination would therefore provide a useful alternative to Aroclor-1254 for routine screening.

It was found that the level of “S9” present in the metabolic system greatly affected the quantitative mutagenic response. This varied considerably from chemical to chemical and underlined the need for such preliminary investigations in routine screening.  相似文献

The cat ovary presents unusually high levels of noradrenaline that change according to the endocrine status of the animal. Their functional meaning remains unknown. The cat ovary innervation, unlike that of other organs receiving noradrenergic innervation, has been poorly characterized on biochemical grounds. We present here a biochemical characterization of the neurotransmitter storage. By using hyperosmotic and isoosmotic gradients evidence is presented that noradrenaline is associated to two different populations of vesicles. In hyperosmomolarity conditions (sucrose gradients) “light” vesicles (density 1.12 g/ml) and “heavy” vesicles (density 1.17 g/ml) appeared. In both vesicles, noradrenaline and dopamine-β-hydroxylase were found. In isoosmotic Percoll gradients distribution of the markers also suggested the presence of two vesicle populations. Light vesicles (density 1.033 g/ml) with high dopamine-β-hydroxylase activity but very low levels of noradrenaline and adenosine triphosphate; [3H]noradrenaline, used as a specific exogenous vesicle marker, was feebly incorporated in this fraction. Heavy vesicles (density 1.041 g/ml) containing high levels of noradrenaline, adenosine triphosphate, low levels of dopamine-β-hydroxylase activity are able to incorporate high amounts of [3H]noradrenaline. In these gradients, Mg2+ activated ATPase activity was present in both vesicle fractions.

Sedimentation analysis by analytical differential centrifugation also disclosed two types of vesicles: large vesicles with a sedimentation coefficient between 348 and 308 and small vesicles with a sedimentation coefficient of 96 . Large vesicles were associated with noradrenaline-β-hydroxylase activity, while small vesicles were associated only with noradrenaline.

In isoosmotic conditions the use of other microsomal markers allowed us to define the degree of contamination of the vesicle fractions. It was found that the noradrenergic heavy vesicles fraction presented under 11% of 5′-nucleotidase activity of the total activity present in the gradient and less than 5% of acid phosphatase, NADH-cytochrome c reductase and monoaminooxidase of the total activities in the gradients.

In isoosmotic conditions the physical properties of presumed vesicles were apparently undisturbed supporting the current morphometric observations. Our results then suggest prevailing roles for each type of vesicle: synthesis for light vesicles, and storage and/or release for heavy ones.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of S-state transitions in Photosystem II was measured by means of thermoluminescence using two different protocols for low-temperature flash excitation: protocol A, “last flash at low temperature”, and protocol B, “all flashes at low temperature”. Comparison of the temperature-dependence curves obtained by these two protocols revealed a marked difference particular for the three-flash experiments. The difference was attributed to the formation of a low-temperature sensitive precursor state between S2 and S3. The state is formed by two flash illumination given at −5 to −50°C, spontaneously transforms to normal S3 on dark warming, and is not converted to S0 by the 3rd flash. The precursor state was tentatively assigned to an S3 in which H+ release is not completed.  相似文献

Aimed at improving animal fertility and health, diets for farm and laboratory animals have over the last few years been supplemented with increasing amounts of the antioxidant vitamin E. We now demonstrate by intravital microscopy that feeding hamsters with a vitamin E-supplemented “standard” rodent diet (60 ppm vitamin E) significantly reduces the microvascular manifestations of ischemia/reperfusion injury when compared to animals fed a nonsupplemented diet. Postischemic leukocyte adhesion to venular endothelium was reduced from 770 ± 204 cells/mm2 at 24 h after reperfusion in control animals on the nonsupplemented diet to 403 ± 105 cells/mm2 in animals on the “standard” rodent diet (means ± SD, N = 7 animals per group, p < 0.01). Animals on the nonsupplemented diet showed a dramatic loss of capillary perfusion density until 7 days after reperfusion (to 21 ± 13% of preischemic baseline values), whereas this loss was significantly attenuated (to 71 ± 12% of preischemic values, p < 0.01) in animals on the “standard” rodent diet. No difference in the extent of reperfusion injury was seen between animals on the “standard” rodent diet and animals on diets with substantially higher vitamin E supplements (300 ppm–30.000 ppm). Besides underscoring the benefit of vitamin E in reducing the extent of ischemia/reperfusion injury, this study raises the concern that vitamin E supplements in “standard” laboratory animal diets may have a far-reaching impact on biomedical research by jeopardizing established animal models of disease.  相似文献
