Mosses form an important component of the flora in terrestrial and lacustrine ecosystems of Antarctica. Here we report the occurrence of mosses in Radok Lake, Amery Oasis, East Antarctica, which has a maximum water depth of c. 360 m and is presumed to be the deepest freshwater lake in Antarctica. Aquatic mosses, determined as Bryum pseudotriquetrum, were found at water depths of up to 81 m, growing on the sediment surface at different locations in the lake basin. This is the deepest record of living mosses in Antarctic lakes. The modern oligo- to ultra-oligotrophic hydrological characteristics of Radok Lake may be an indispensable precondition for the growth of the moss at these water depths.  相似文献

Samples of marine ice were collected from the Amery Ice Shelf, a large embayed ice shelf in East Antarctica, during the Austral summer of 2001–2002. The samples came from a site ∼90 km from the iceberg calving front of the shelf, where the ice is 479 m thick and the lower 203 m is composed of accreted marine ice. Protists identified within the marine ice layer of the Amery Ice Shelf include diatoms, chrysophytes, silicoflagellates and dinoflagellates. The numerical dominance of sea ice indicator diatoms such as Fragilariopsis curta, Fragilariopsis cylindrus, Fragilariopsis rhombica and Chaetoceros resting spores, and the presence of cold open water diatoms such as Fragilariopsis kerguelensis and species of Thalassiosira suggest the protist composition of the Amery marine ice is attributable to seeding from melting pack and/or fast ice protist communities in the highly productive waters of Prydz Bay to the north.  相似文献

Bacterial biomass and heterotrophic potential (using 14C-labeled glucose, glutamic acid and sodium acetate) of water, ice and sediment microbial populations were studied from different lakes of the Schirmacher Oasis, Antarctica. Epifluorescence counts of total bacteria in these lakes were observed to be lower by a factor when compared to some of the ultraoligotrophic Antarctic lakes. Biovolumes of bacteria from different samples did not show significant variations, suggesting that regulatory factors were oligotrophy and low temperatures rather than microzoan grazing. Microbial uptake rates of glutamic acid were generally the fastest, followed by glucose and/or sodium acetate in the lakewater samples. The mean values of Vmax cell–1 for glutamic acid, sodium acetate and glucose were 3.81, 0.91 and 0.71 pgCh–1. Results of this study are potentially useful in recognizing the relative abundance and activity of limnetic microbial populations in the Schirmacher Oasis during summer — the active period of microbial growth — and for comparing their activities with other ecosystems elsewhere in continental Antarctica.  相似文献

An ultra-high-resolution post-glacial laminated sediment record from Mertz Ninnis Trough, East Antarctic Margin (EAM), has been analysed using SEM backscattered electron imagery, secondary electron imagery and quantitative diatom abundance. Laminations are classified using visually dominant diatom species and terrigenous content. Four biogenic diatom ooze laminae types, one diatom-bearing terrigenous lamina type and one diatom-bearing terrigenous sub-lamina type have been identified. Diatom ooze lamina types comprise near-monogeneric Hyalochaete Chaetoceros spp. resting spore laminae, laminae characterised by Corethron pennatum, laminae characterised by Rhizosolenia spp. and mixed diatom assemblage laminae. Diatom-bearing terrigenous lamina and sub-lamina types comprise mixed diatom assemblage terrigenous laminae and sub-laminae characterised by Porosira glacialis resting spores. Formation of each of these lamina types is controlled by seasonal changes in nutrients, oceanographic regimes and the Mertz Glacier Polynya dynamics.  相似文献

Sulfate reduction rates were measured in waters and sediments from four antarctic lakes and an antarctic fjord basin by a radiometric technique. There was generally a linear correlation between the period of incubation and sulfate reduced; the average of the correlation coefficients was 0.76 ± 0.1. The rates at 6 °C were very low (0.0–1.1 µmol kg–1 d–1) when compared to most other marine and non-marine environments for which sulfate reduction rates have been reported. Lactate and acetate did not stimulate sulfate reduction. Temperatures of the sediments selected from the different sites varied from –0.4 to 4.5 °C and the chloride and sulfate concentrations of the sediments varied from 0.19 to 0.83 mol kg–1 and 0.04 to 41.01 mmol kg–1 respectively. Sulfate reduction rates did not correlate with the chlorosity of sediment porewaters.  相似文献

The physico-chemical characteristics and the planktonic diatom flora were studied in high arctic Loon Lake (Geographical Society Ø, East Greenland). Loon Lake is a cold, monomictic, alkaline, low conductive and likely oligotrophic lake with a maximum water depth of 11.70 m and a low diversity of planktonic diatoms. In summer 2003, the lake-water diatom community consisted of three taxa: frustules belonging to the morphologically highly variable Cyclotella ocellata-polymorpharossii-tripartita-complex were most abundant, and both Discostella pseudostelligera and Fragilaria tenera were of minor importance. The diatom flora of the Salton Sea, California   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We report on diatom species of the Salton Sea, a highly saline (43 g l–1) inland lake in California. We identified and photographed all diatom taxa encountered in the phytoplankton and benthos of the Salton Sea and its immediate tributaries. Ninety-four taxa were distinguished based on their morphological features using light- and electron microscopy. In the Salton Sea, there are four general categories of diatom assemblages related to their habitats: (1) A planktonic assemblage composed of Chaetoceros muelleri var. subsalsum, Cyclotella choctawhatcheeana, Cyclotella sp., Cylindrotheca closterium, Pleurosigma ambrosianum, Thalassionema sp.; (2) a benthic assemblage with diatoms that live on the bottom (e.g. genera Caloneis, Diploneis, Entomoneis, Gyrosigma, Plagiotropis, Pleurosigma, Surirella and Tryblionella), or in algal mats (Proschkinia bulnheimii, several species of Navicula and Seminavis gracilenta); (3) an epiphytic community attached to the macroscopic green algae which grow on the rocks and other hard surfaces near shore (e.g. Achnanthes brevipes, Licmophora ehrenbergii, Tabularia parva); and (4) a freshwater assemblage composed of species that get washed in by the rivers and other inflows discharging into the Sea (e.g. Achnanthidium minutissimum, Cocconeis pediculus, Cyclotella atomus, C. scaldensis, Nitzschia elegantula, T. weissflogii). The most striking feature of the phytoplankton is the abundance of species formerly known only from marine environments; this is not surprising given the high salinity and the peculiar history of the lake.  相似文献

The algal and cyanobacterial flora and the chemical environment of six freshwater streams of Schirmacher Oasis, Antarctica were investigated. Over 30 species of algae, predominantly cyanobacteria (Cyanophyceae), were recorded. N2-fixing species, both heterocystous and unicellular diazotrophs, contributed more than 50% to the counts and their dominance was greatest in the middle of the stream where nitrogen and other nutrients were low. Green algae and diatoms also contributed to the flora. The species composition varied between streams. Glacial and snow drift meltwater streams contained a distinctive community. Based on diversity indices, these streams could be classified into two clusters.  相似文献

Lake El'gygytgyn, an impact crater lake in northeastern Siberia, was analysed based on water-column characteristics and the modern and sub-recent diatom flora. Vertical temperature, conductivity and oxygen profiles, as well as ionic concentrations in the lake water, reveal that Lake El'gygytgyn is a clear, cold-monomictic, ultra-oligotrophic high-Arctic lake with high light-penetration depth. We identified 113 diatom taxa, of which only 2 species are planktic diatoms. Cyclotella ocellata is the only quantitatively significant diatom present in the modern phytoplankton community, and is also predominant in a short sediment core, which probably reflects the mid- and late-Holocene environmental history of Lake El'gygytgyn. Pliocaenicus costatus var. sibiricus is also common but of minor importance. This is the first evidence of P. costatus var. sibiricus outside the Lake Baikal region.  相似文献

The biogeography of Antarctic lacustrine diatoms is incompletely known due in part to the absence of information from some important ice-free regions. In the first detailed study of the diatoms of the Bunger Hills, 29 species were identified in near-edge microbial mats of lakes ranging in salinity from fresh to 77‰. Most of the species present had previously been recorded in other East Antarctic coastal oases. The distribution and relative abundance of diatoms within the Bunger Hills were strongly influenced by salinity, but other factors, notably the characteristics of lakes in the immediate area of a particular lake, also played important roles.  相似文献

We visited 51 lakes in Costa Rica as part of a broad-based survey to document their physical and chemical characteristics and how these relate to the mode of formation and geographical distribution of the lakes. The four oxbow lakes were low in elevation and tended to be turbid, high in conductivity and CO2, but low in dissolved O2; one of these, L. Gandoca, had a hypolimnion essentially composed of sea water. These were similar to the four wetland lakes, but the latter instead had low conductivities and pH, and turbidity was often due to tannins rather than suspended sediments. The thirteen artificial lakes formed a very heterogenous group, whose features varied depending on local factors. The thirteen lakes dammed by landslides, lava flows, or lahars occurred in areas with steep slopes, and were more likely to be stratified than most other types of lakes. The eight lakes that occupy volcanic craters tended to be deep, stratified, clear, and cool; two of these, L. Hule and L. Río Cuarto, appeared to be oligomictic (tending toward meromictic). The nine glacial lakes, all located above 3440 m elevation near Cerro Chirripó, were clear, cold, dilute, and are probably polymictic. Cluster analysis resulted in three significant groups of lakes. Cluster 1 included four calcium-rich lakes (average 48 mg l-1), Cluster 2 included fourteen lakes with more Si than Ca+2 and higher Cl- than the other clusters, and Cluster 3 included the remaining thirty-three lakes that were generally less concentrated. Each cluster included lakes of various origins located in different geographical regions; these data indicate that, apart from the high-altitude glacial lakes and lakes in the Miravalles area, similarity in lake chemistry is independent of lake distribution.  相似文献

The seasonal variations of limnological (water temperature, light availability, turbidity, and chlorophyll a concentration) parameters were recorded continuously from January 2004 to February 2005 at two freshwater lakes: Oyako-ike and Hotoke-ike, Sôya Coast, East Antarctica. Water was in a liquid phase throughout the year, with temperatures ranging from 0 to 10°C. The maximum photosynthetically active radiation in Lake Oyako-ike was 23.16 mol m?2 day?1 (at 3.8 m) and Hotoke-ike was 53.01 mol m?2 day?1 (at 2.2 m) in summer, and chlorophyll a concentration ranged from ca. 0.5 to 2.5 μg L?1 (Oyako-ike) and from ca. 0.1 to 0.8 μg L?1 (Hotoke-ike) during the study period. Increase in chlorophyll a fluorescence occurred under dim-light conditions when the lakes were covered with ice in spring and autumn, but the signals were minimum in ice-free summer in both the lakes. During spring and summer, as a result of decreasing snow cover, the chlorophyll a concentration similarly decreased when PAR was relatively high, following periods of heavy winds. The autumnal and spring increase occurred under different PAR levels (ca. 20-fold and 90-fold stronger, respectively, in autumn in both the lakes). Differences in the autumn and spring increases suggest that the spring algal community is more shade-adapted than the autumn algal community. Antarctic phytoplankton appears especially adapted to low-light levels and inhibited by strong light regimes.  相似文献

Results are presented concerning water chemistry, chlorophyll a concentrations, phytoplankton, Zooplankton, bottom fauna and fish material obtained from these lakes. Water samples from 36 lakes in northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan were collected and analyzed during 1983–1984. All study lakes were dilute and had total alkalinities of less than 150 eq · L–1. Minnesota lakes have hydrologic inputs from the watershed and inputs of base cations derived from the watershed. Study lakes in Minnesota had higher total alkalinities, dissolved organic carbon, and noncarbonate alkalinity as a result of watershed inputs. Lakes in Michigan and Wisconsin were precipitation-dominated seepage lakes that have lower concentrations of base cations than lakes in Minnesota. All of the study lakes have lower sulfate concentrations than expected, based on atmospheric wet deposition and evapotranspiration.Pore water samples collected from one of the study lakes—Little Rock Lake—in Wisconsin were used to calculate diffusive fluxes between the sediment and water column. According to these calculations, the sediments were a source of total alkalinity and Ca2+ and a sink for SO4 2–. The sediment-water exchange of total alkalinity, Ca2+, and SO4 2– appears to be important in the whole-lake budgets of these ions for Little Rock Lake.  相似文献

Between November 1970 and November 1972 nine sampling trips were carried out in the Friesian Lake District. Fourteen lakes were sampled. The chemical composition of the lake water, chlorophyll-a content and the species composition and population densities of zooplankton and benthos were determined simultaneously. Results are discussed in relation to the hydrology of the Lakes system and the morphometry of the individual lakes. The lakes showed a high degree of similarity.  相似文献

Summary Soil samples from the Schirmacher Oasis of Antarctica were examined for the presence of yeasts. The number of yeast cells in the samples varied between 600 and 3000 g of wet soil. Eight pure cultures were obtained. All of the eight isolates were nonfermentative and all but one was Diazonium Blue B (DBB)-positive, indicating their basidiomycetous affinity. Based on their morphology, reproductive behavior, growth at different temperatures and salt concentrations, nutritional characteristies and various biochemical tests, all the eight cultures have been identified. Three of them are red yeasts, Rhodotorula rubra, one Bullera alba, one a dimorphic, Candida humicola and one Candida famata. The remaining two cultures have been tentatively identified as Candida ingeniosa and Candida auriculariae.  相似文献

Summary The plankton of twelve freshwater and slightly saline lakes in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica was sampled in February 1991. All of the lakes are oligotrophic. The chlorophyll a concentrations in the lakes ranged from 0.10–2.69 g · 1–1. The majority of the phytoplankton were flagellates or picoplanktonic cyanobacteria with the species composition varying between the lakes. Cyanobacteria were found in five of the lakes. Five to 6 species of ciliated protozoa occurred, among them oligotrichs, including the mixotrophic species Strombidium viride. The concentrations of protists and bacteria were an order to several orders of magnitude lower than reported from lower latitude oligotrophic lakes. Low species diversity and low numbers in the plankton characterise these eastern Antarctica lakes which reflects their low nutrient status and isolation.  相似文献
