T he following notes were made during my second tour in Northern Rhodesia, from December 1935 to July 1938. Notes relating to some of the species seen during that tour have, however, already appeared in 'The Ibis' (1938, pp. 269–277). References are also made to the notes on the birds observed during my first tour (Ibis, 1936, pp. 763–791; 'L'Oiseau et la Revue française d'Ornithologie,' 1936, pp. 77–85), where the same species are dealt with again.

Application of the synthetic method to other amines.

Taurine and 2-aminoethylphosphonic acid were synthesized by the method of the main paper [Geoghegan & Dixon (1989) Biochem. J. 260, 295-296], i.e. by treating the corresponding halo compound with 2-aminoethanol and then with periodate.     

A thermodynamic model for the cooperative functional properties of the tetraheme cytochrome c3 from Desulfovibrio gigas.

A thermodynamic model is presented to describe the redox behaviour of the tetraheme cytochrome c3 from Desulfovibrio gigas. This molecule displays different intrinsic redox potentials for the four hemes and during the redox titration process, interactions among different hemes occur, thus altering the values of redox potentials according to which of the hemes are oxidized [Santos, H., Moura, J.J.G., Moura, I., LeGall, J. & Xavier, A.V. (1984) Eur. J. Biochem. 141, 283-296]. This complex cooperative behaviour [Xavier, A.V. (1986) J. Inorg. Biochem. 28, 239-243] has been analyzed here using an I2H4-interaction network [Cornish-Bowden, A. & Koshland, D.E. Jr (1970) J. Biol. Chem. 245, 6241-6250] coupled to a proton-linked equilibrium between two tertiary structures. Such a formalism, which requires a reduced number of parameters, is able to fully account quantitatively for the pH dependence of the NMR redox-titration curves. The 'redox-Bohr' effect is discussed in terms of the available structure and thermodynamic data and a functional mechanism is proposed.     

Control of phosphatidylcholine synthesis and the regulatory role of choline kinase in rat liver. Evidence from essential-fatty acid-deficient rats.

Choline kinase and phosphocholine cytidylytransferase catalyse the rate-limiting steps of the cytidine pathway for the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine [Infante (1977) Biochem. J. 167, 847--849]. Essential-fatty acid deficiency induces a 3.5-fold increase in the specific activity of choline kinase, whereas the specific activity of the cytidylytransferase remains unchanged in rat liver. This change in specific activity accounts for the calculated increase in flux through the cytidine pathway produced in vivo by the same dietary state [Trewhella & Collins (1973 Biochim. Biophys. Acta 296, 34--50], thus confirming the fact that choline kinase has a regulatory role in the cytidine pathway for the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine.

A second type A-nauplius from the Upper Cambrian 'Orsten' of Sweden

Among newly sorted material, two specimens at first considered as nauplius-like larva A (Müller & Walossek 1986, Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh: Earth Sciences 77 ) differ from this type in their larger sized body and appendages, much smaller caudal spines, and lack of the dorsal hook-like plates. They are regarded as a similar but distinct type, named 'larva A2'. * Crustacea, ontogeny, phosphatization, 3D-preservation .     

Field Notes on Birds of the Chambeshi and Luangwa Areas in Northern Rhodesia

As in my previous notes (Ibis, 1942, pp. 83–90), the information on distribution and breeding is supplementary to that given in Winterbottom's 'Check List of the Birds of Northern Rhodesia'. My 1941 notes in 'The Ibis' (I) dealt with a wider area, but these are restricted to the Chambeshi River area in the Northern Province and to the upper Luangwa River area in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

Mallomonas madagascariensis, M. lemuriocellata and M. crocodilorum are described and illustrated with TEM micrographs as the first results of studies of silica-scaled chrysophytes made in Madagascar. Their taxonomical position within the genus Mallomonas (sect. Torquatae , ser. Mangoferae ) is discussed and morphological distinguishing characters are presented.
