The taxonomic position in relation to the generaMicropus andStylocline is discussed. It seems most appropriate to regard this species as belonging to a monotypic genus. In this case its correct name isCymbolaena griffithii (A.Gray)Wagenitz, comb. nov.

     

Sesquiterpene xylosides from Iphiona scabra

The aerial parts of Iphiona scabra afforded a complex mixture of sesquiterpene xylopyranosides. Separation of the peracetylated derivatives gave 10 compounds, seven eudesmane derivatives, a secoeudesmane and two sesquiterpene glycosides with new skeletons, named iphionane and isoiphionane. The biogenesis of these compounds is discussed.     

The genus Chamaegastrodia (Orchidaceae)

A merger of the genera Evrardia and Chamaegastrodia is proposed, and an annotated enumeration of five species so far recognized is proposed.     

The genus Navisporus (Polyporaceae)

The genus Navisporus (Polyporaceae) has been restudied. Two species are included. The new combination Navisporus sulcatus (Lloyd) Ryv. is proposed.     

The genus Asteriscus (Asteraceae-Inuleae)

Asteriscus Mill. is a genus belonging to the Inula -group of the Asteraceae-Inuleae. It is here delimited to contain three species, A. maritimus (L.) Less., A. hierochunticus (Michon) Wikl. (generally known as A. pygmaeus (DC.) Coss & Dur.) and A. spinosus (L.) Sch. Bip. (generally known as Pallenis spinosa (L.) Cass.), growing largely in the Mediterranean and N African regions. The morphology, phytogeography, phylogeny and systematic position of all three species are discussed and a cladogram of the genus is presented.     

The genus hampea(Malvaceae)

The genusHampea Schlecht. is included in the Malvaceae, tribe Gossypieae, rather than in the Bombacaceae where it was originally placed. Discussion includes the morphology, geography (central Mexico to western Colombia), reproductive cycle, utilization and vernacular names, and cytology (n = 13) of the genus. Three species have perfect flowers; the remainder are dioecious. The 16 species (and one variety) that are accepted are divided into three sections, one of which is further subdivided into three series. The following taxa are described as new:H. nutricia, H. mexicana, H. sphaerocarpa, andH. appendiculata var.longicalyx.     

The genus Aciachne (Poaceae)

A lectotype has been selected for Aciachne pulvinata. The name A. uniflora is rejected as nom. illeg. Two new species, A. acicularis and A. flagellifera are described and a key is provided. Leaf anatomy is described and discussed, several diagnostic-characters have been found. Distribution maps and altitudinal ranges are discussed.     

The genus Nauplius (Asteraceae-Inuleae)

Nauplius (named Bubonium in previous publications) is a mainly Macaronesian and N African genus belonging to the Inula -group of the Asteraceae-Inuleae. Eight species and five subspecies are recognized and a key to all taxa is included. The morphology, phylogeny and phytogeography of the genus are also discussed.     

The genus Anvillea (Compositae)

The genus Anvillea (Compositae–Inuleae–Inulinae) is found to contain two species which occur in N Africa and the Middle East. Anvilleina Maire is reduced to a synonym of Anvillea and the following two new combinations are made: A. platycarpa (Maire) A. Anderb. and A. garcinii (Burm. f.) DC. ssp. radiata (Coss. & Dur.) A. Anderb. The chromosome number 2n = 14 of A. garcinii ssp. radiata is reported.     

The genus Leptogonum (Polygonaceae)

Revision of the genus Leptogonum resulted in the recognition of one species with one variety. A new combination L. domingense var. molle is proposed. The systematic position of Leptogonum is discussed. It is considered to be phylogenetically old and isolated genus within Polygonaceae.     

The genus Perralderia Gosson (Asteraceae-Inuleae-Inulinae)

The North African genus Perralderia (Asteraceae-Inuleae-Inulinae) is revised. Three species and two subspecies are recognized. The systematic position, phylogeny and biogeography of the genus are also discussed.     

The monotypic genus Cyphotheca (Melastomataceae)

Cyphotheca (Sonerileae s.l.), known only from China (Yunnan), is accepted as a monotypic genus most closely related to Phyllagalhis . The new name P. fengii C . Hansen is proposed for C. hispida , because the epithet hispida is not available in the genus Phyllagathis .     

The genus Saccharomyces (Meyen) Reess

The speciesSaccharomyces heterogenicus Osterwalder,Saccharomyces steineri Lodder et Kreger-van Rij,Saccharomyces pastorianus Hansen,Saccharomyces bayanus Saccardo andSaccharomyces willianus Saccardo were compared. It was found that the biochemical characters used for the definition of these species were variable and the strains of the given species were therefore evaluated together. With reference to the present accepted criteria of species specificity, grouping on the basis of coefficients of similarity was not conclusive. One of the characters (the fermentation and assimilation of galactose) was therefore dispensed with, while a new characteristic (determination) of amylolytic activity was added. It was found that the speciesSaccharomyces pastorianus, Saccharomyces bayanus andSaccharomyces willianus were so similar that they could be grouped in one species.Saccharomyces heterogenicus retained its species specific characteristics, whileSaccharomyces steineri formed a transition between this species and the other three. The coefficients of similarity, S, calculated by the methods of Jaccard and of Sokal and Michener, were compared and some of the more problematical questions of the numerical method are discussed.
