Life history and status ofHerpystis cuscutae as biological control agent have been investigated. Of the tenCuscuta spp. in Pakistan it infested onlyC. reflexa on six host plants of whichAdhatoda vasica andDodonaea viscosa were the most preferred. Variations in its period of activity in different areas were attributed to the differences in the fruiting periods of its host. It was found to have a tolerance for extremes of climates, was multivoltine, could complete development on some convolvules, legumes and umbellifers among the plants of 28 families tested and was apparently free from natural enemies.  相似文献

Observations on the parasitoids of cotton bollworms in the Punjab were made during 1978 and 1979. The 2 trichogrammatid egg parasitoids, viz.Trichogramma achaeae Nagaraja & Nagarkatti andTrichogrammatoidea sp. nearguamensis Nagaraja (MS) were recovered fromPectinophora gossypiella (Saunders) in addition to 1 braconid egg-larval parasitoidChelonus sp. and 7 larval parasitoids, viz. 4 braconidsApanteles angaleti Muesebeck,Bracon greeni Ashsmead,Camptothlipsis sp. andRogas sp., 1 elasmid,Elasmus johnstoni Ferrière, 1 bethylid,Goniozus sp. and 1 ichneumonid,Scambus lineipes (Morley). FromEarias insulana Boisduval andEarias vittella F., 3 trichogrammatid egg parasitoids,T. achaeae, Trichogramma chilonis Ishii, andT. sp. nearguamensis 2 braconid larval parasitoids,B. greeni andRogas sp. and 1 chalcid pupal parasitoid,Brachymeria nephantidis Gahan, were recovered. One eurytomid hyperparasitoid,Eurytoma braconidis Ferrière was also recovered from the cocoons ofB. greeni. Of these parasitoids,T. achaeae, T. sp. nearguamensis, Camptothlipsis sp. andS. lineipes fromP. gossypiella, T. achaeae andB. nephantidis fromEarias spp. andE. braconidis fromB. greeni are new records.  相似文献

The numerical response of Nantucket pine tip moth,Rhyacionia frustrana (Comstock) parasitoids to varying host densities is described. Response surface analysis showed that high rates of parasitism (greater than 50 %) occurs more frequently at low host densities. This paper is based on 20 months survey and laboratory studies of the parasitoids ofSpodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) (Lep.: Noctuidae) carried out in Cyprus in 1971–72. Regular sampling revealed the presence of 19 further macrolepidopterous members of the ecosystem, includingS. exigua (Hbn.),Heliothis spp. and “Plusia” spp. Attacking these were a complex of at least 37 named primary parasitoids and a single secondary parasitoid. The commonest were the ichneumonidHyposoter didymator (Thnb.) and the braconidsChelonus inanitus (L.),Meteorus unicolor (Wesm.) andMicroplitis rufiventris Kok. and notes on their hosts, hostplants and biology are given. Almost all of the parasitoids were polyphagous and this, together with a wide range of hostplants, appears to improve the carry-over of the parasitoids and permit for greater parasitism of the main pests,S. littoralis andS. exigua. The % parasitism is shown to vary greatly with the situation, being highest in unsprayed lucerne field and unsprayed market gardens, and lowest in potato fields and sprayed vegetable plots. Recommendations are made for possible reductions in crop spraying, permitting the growth of weeds, under certain conditions, mass-rearing and liberation of an endemic parasitoid (C. inanitus) and filling gaps in the parasite complex by the introduction of exotic parasitoids.  相似文献

Methods for large-scale rearing and handling of the tortricid,Bactra verutana Zeller, were developed for early-season augmentation of this insect to biologically control purple nutsedge,Cyperus rotundus L., and yellow nutsedge,C. esculentus L. A modified soybean flour-wheat germ larval diet, originally developed for the sugarcane borer,Diatraea saccharalis (L.), yielded pupae equal in weight to pupae from larvae reared on the standardBactra casein-wheat germ diet in an earlier test. An oviposition cage, constructed of 3.1-mm mesh hardware cloth in the form of a cylinder 17 cm high and 15 cm in diameter and wrapped with sheets of clear polyethylene, provided the rough-textured surface necessary for maximum oviposition. Although crowded, each female laid an average of 257 eggs, all on the polyethylene wrappers, which equaled or exceeded average producion in smooth-surfaced cages (168–204 / ♀). The sheets of eggs were placed in Erlenmeyer flasks from which the newly-hatched larvae were removed from the flasks by swirling 200 ml corn cob grits around in each flask. This procedure killed or injured 10 % of the larvae. With this techique an average 90, 500 living larvae were produced per day for field release over an 87-day period. When 22.5-ml cups of diet containing pupae were dumped in piles in screen cages or when the diet with pupae was removed from each cup and placed in a pile in the cages, only 40 % of the moths were recovered. The recovery rate was 75 % from cups nested in crossstacked 36-cell trays placed in cages. Collecting the moths for field release by aspirating 200 of them into 2-liter flasks had no effect on fecundity. With this method an average 2,675 adults were produced per day for field release over a 95-day period.  相似文献

Field populations of larvae of the fruit tree leafrollerArchips argyrospila (Wlk). were practically eliminated following spray application ofBacillus thuringiensis Berliner serotype III at 192 and 80×106 I.U. per litre on the host trees,Cercis occidentalis. Spray applications of lower rates ofB. thurienginsis serotype III at 18.9 and 32.1×106 I.U. per litre and mist application ofB. thuringiensis serotype 1 at 8.0 and 16.0×106 I.U. per litre gave partial control of populations ofA. argyrospila larvae. A survey of the parasitoids of the Asian corn borer,Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee), in the Mariana Islands showed that few of the borers were parasitized. Parasitoids were reared from only 30 pupae out of more than 4 500 sampled. Three species of pupal parasitoids were found:Xanthopimpla punctata (F.),Brachymeria albotibialis (Ashmead) andTetrastichus? inferens Yoshimoto. No parasitoids were reared from mature larvae. The only egg parasitoid observed wasTrichogramma chilonis Ishii. During the month prior to the sweet corn harvest, which was the peak period of moth oviposition, about 40% of the egg masses had at least one egg parasitized. An average of about 35% of the eggs within a mass were parasitized.  相似文献

Inundative releases of the egg parasitoidTrichogrammatoidea cryptophlebiae Nagaraja were made againstCryptophlebia leucotreta (Meyrick) on 5 commercial citrus farms in the western Cape Province, South Africa, over 2 successive seasons. A target release volume of 80 000 parasitoids ha−1 week−1 was established for releases over 29 and 33 weeks during the 2 seasons. Total seasonal volumes reached an equivalent of 2.3 and 3.8 million parasitoids ha−1 respectively. Compared with check treatments on each farm, larval population size was reduced in the release areas by 54% in the 1st and by almost 60% in the 2nd season. Percentage crop loss was reduced by 49.4±12.4 and 61.1±8.3% respectively. Treatment effects were clearly related to increases in rate of parasitism measured in both artificially-placed and in nativeC. leucotreta egg populations. Treatment efficacy is similar to that obtained with applications of chitin synthesis inhibitors but parasitoid production costs are 30% of insecticide costs. Manual distribution of parasitoids is labour intensive, however, and further studies should investigate whether inoculative releases at higher rates per week over a shorter period, are effective.   相似文献

Feeding by 10-day old mid-instar larvae of the native moth,Bactra verutana Zeller, coated with solutions of bentazon [3-isopropyl-1 H-3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide] or glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine], reduced the dry weight of purple (Cyperus rotundus L.) or yellow nutsedge (C. esculentus L.) an average 25% more than did uncoated larvae. The herbicide-coated larvae reduced dry weight by 71% for 4-week yellow nutsedge and by 80% for 2-week purple nutsedge plants within 15 days after release. This integrated approach was apparently not pratical, however, because larvae randomly damaged the non-target crops, cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and turnip (Brassica rapa L.). The more mature larvae killed about 3% of the cotton and 14% of the turnip plants. Newly-emerged larvae were highly sensitive to the herbicides. Mature larvae are less host-specific than are newly-emerged larvae. Therefore, the use of repeated broadcasts of newly-emergedB. verutana larvae is still the best method known for using insects to control nutsedge.  相似文献

ACactoblastis sp. was found on Harrisia cactus (Eriocereus martinii Lab.) in north-eastern Argentina. In biology and life history it is similar toCactoblastis cactorum (Berg.) though attacking different cacti. Laboratory tests and field observations demonstrate that it will only damage plants in the sub-tribeCereanae of theCactaceae. It was approved for liberation in Queensland, Australia in August 1975 for the control ofEriocereus spp., and field releases were made in October 1978.  相似文献

Ooencyrtus pityocampae (Mercet) is a polyphagous egg parasitoid, known mainly as an egg parasitoid of the Pine Processionary Caterpillar,Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Denis &; Schiffermüller), a pest of pines in Southern Europe and in the Mediterranean region. Rearing on artificial medium was recently undertaken, and after a large screening of both materials and techniques available for this aim, a PVC film and a medium devoid of insect material were found as suitable for the complete development ofO. pityocampae. The artificial eggs allowed the parasitoid to oviposit and to develop up to the adult stage. Five adults (2 males and 3 females) were obtained. Development was slower than that observed in natural hosts. Two out of three females laid viable eggs in both natural and artificial eggs.  相似文献

The developmental interaction between the egg/larval parasitoid,Ascogaster reticulatus Watanabe (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and its host,Adoxophyes sp. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) was examined. Prior to the egress of a final-instar parasitoid larva from the 4th-instar host larva, host weight decreased by 22% from the maximum weight. The final body weight of a host larva was 27% of the maximum weight of a healthy 5th-instar host. Food consumption was significantly reduced in both 3rd-and 4th-instar parasitized larvae compared with healthy ones. In the 4th instar, a parasitized larva consumed 28% less artificial diet and produced less frass than a healthy larva. The growth rate of the endoparasitoid larvae greatly increased after their host's molt to the 4th instar. Parasitoid larval volume increased 40 fold in the 4th-instar host.   相似文献

Simple laboratory methods to select candidateTrichogramma strains for use in biological control were tried. 17 strains were screened for their suitability against the codling mothCydia pomonella L. as well as the 2 summer fruit tortrix mothsAdoxophyes orana F.R. andPandemis heparana Schiff. In one set of experiments, the capacity ofTrichogramma to parasitize each of these target pests was examined, in another set, the preference ofTrichogramma to contact and parasitize the target pests compared to the standard mass rearing hostSitotroga cerealella was assessed in choice experiments. A strain ofTrichogramma dendrolimi from the People's Republic of China was found to have the highest fecundity with all the 4 hosts tested. In choice experiments, however, this strain was shown to have a near equal preference between the target tortrix pestsC. pomonella, A. orana and the replacement hostS. cerealella. 11 localTrichogramma strains collected from fruit orchards and vineyards in different locations in the Federal Republic of Germany were reared separately. Four of these local strains, one identified asT. embryophagum, showed clear preference to the tortrix pestsC. pomonella andA. orana compared toS. cerealella. The preference of one of these strains was particularly strong and amounted to a near total rejection ofS. cerealella eggs in the presence of any of the 2 tortrix pests. The remaining 12 strains had weaker parasitization capacity and/or less preference to the target pests. Four of the strains tested in these experiments, includingT. dendrolimi andT. embryophagum, were mass reared and released in apple orchards between 1984 and 1986. A study of fertilizer and herbicide effects on Nantucket pine tip moth (NPTM), Rhyacionia frustrana (Comstock) infestations was conducted in loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda L.) plantations in Nacogdoches Co., Texas, from 1988 to 1989. Both fertilizer and herbicide applications had effects on NPTM infestation level, pupal weight and host tree oleoresin production. Nitrogen fertilization increased infestation levels; whereas, phosphorus applications tends to decrease infestation rate. Herbicide treatment had a negative effect on NPTM infestations possibly because of decreased moisture stress and increased tree vigour. This is in contrast to general observations of increased NPTM infestations associated with reducing competing vegetation. Fertilizer application alone did not significantly improve pine growth due to competing vegetation. A combination of fertilizer and herbicide achieved the best growth.  相似文献

Methods were developed for rearingGlypta fumiferanae Viereck on a nondiapausing laboratory colony of the western spruce budworm,Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman. Both host and parasite are univoltine and undergo diapause in nature. In this study, the parasite's voltinism was synchronized with that of a nondiapausing host.G. fumiferanae mated readily in the laboratory, and 5 consecutive generations were reared with an average generation time of less than 8 weeks-much less than the 23 weeks needed for 1 generation to develop in the field. Abstract:  Four non-host plant extracts from Bifora radians , Arctium lappa , Humulus lupulus and Xanthium strumarium , were tested against adult grape berry moths, Paralobesia viteana , for their potential as repellents or oviposition deterrents. Responses were compared with those elicited by the major component of the P. viteana sex pheromone. Moths of both sexes exhibited varying electroantennogram (EAG) responses from 1.7 to 2.4 mV to volatile odours from plant extracts, with the greatest response to extracts of H. lupulus (2.4 mV). A multi-arm olfactometer was used to assay the behavioural response of moths to the same treatments. Male moths responded significantly to H. lupulus extract, although their strongest response was to the sex pheromone (30.0%). Female moths showed no behavioural response to the sex pheromone, attracting only 6.7% of moths, but they were attracted to extracts of H. lupulus , X. strumarium and A. lappa , with 25.0%, 21.7% and 15.0% of the released insects responding to these treatments, respectively. Choice tests were conducted to compare oviposition by P. viteana on untreated grapes and on grapes treated with one of the extracts. Despite the attraction in the olfactometer assays, H. lupulus extract significantly reduced egg laying; only 12.5% of the total deposited eggs were laid on berries treated with this extract. The extract of B. radians provided complete protection against oviposition.  相似文献

A survey of parasites ofAgrotis spp. was carried out in Pakistan to find promising species for trial against noctuids especiallyAgrotis spp. andMythimna separata (Walker) in New Zealand. The parasites recorded wereApanteles ruficrus Haliday,Macrocentrus collaris Spinola,Periscepsia carbonaria Panzer,Turanogonia smirnovi,Rohdain,Ctenichneumon panzeri Wesmael andAnthrax sp. All exceptAnthrax sp. were supplied to New Zealand whereA. ruficrus andM. collaris were released in large numbers.A. ruficrus became established and is giving excellent control ofM. separata resulting in enormous economic gains. Recently it has also been recovered fromAgrotis spp. This example of biological control is significant in thatM. separata has been controlled by a parasite that was previously known from it in New Zealand. Abstract:  The behavioural response of Brazilian apple leafroller males, Bonagota cranaodes (Meyrick), to natural and synthetic sex pheromone was studied in a wind tunnel. Calling females elicited upwind flights followed by landing and wingfanning at the source in 72% of the males tested. Female gland extracts, with the main compound ( E , Z )3,5dodecadienyl acetate released at 100 pg/min, attracted 57% of the males to the source. Few males (1%) were attracted to the main compound alone, released at the same rate. Even a synthetic blend of all five gland compounds eliciting an antennal response, formulated according to their proportion in female gland extracts, was barely attractive (7%). Comparison of this synthetic blend and female gland extracts indicates a behavioural role of other gland compounds. Male attraction was significantly increased (34%) in response to a 100 : 5 : 5 : 5-blend of the main compound and three minor gland compounds, ( Z )-5-dodecenyl acetate, ( E , Z )-3,5-tetradecadienyl acetate, and ( Z )-9-hexadecenyl acetate.  相似文献

Cydia pomonella (L.), a major pest of apples in Canadian orchards, is susceptible to a granulosis virus (CpGV). Orchard trials with different formulations of CpGV in Ontario, whereC. pomonella has two generations per year, indicated that as many as seven applications of virus would be needed to maintain the percentage of fruit with deep larval entries below 4%. In Nova Scotia, where there is only one generation ofC. pomonella per year, two applications of CpGV usually were needed although, in some cases, one sufficed. The protection of fruit conferred by CpGV equalled that by the organophosphate insecticides, azinphosmethyl or phosmet, in some tests. The advantages of a selective treatment, such as CpGV, over use of broad-spectrum insecticides are discussed.

Des essais en vergers utilisant deux préparations de ce virus en Ontario, oùC. pomonella présente deux generations par année, indiquent qu'il faudrait jusqu'à sept pulvérisations pour maintenir à moins de 40% la proportion de fruits portant des infestations larvaires. En Nouvelle Ecosse, oùC. pomonella ne compte qu'une seule génération par an, deux pulvérisations furent nécessaires, quoique dans certains cas une seule a suffi. Dans certains essais, le niveau de protection des fruits égalait celui fourni par les esters phosphoriques, l'azinphos-méthyle ou le phosmet. On discute des avantages des traitements sélectifs tels que le virus de la granulose en comparaison avec l'emploi des insecticides de grande polyvalence.
