The accuracy and time of motor response in tests for visual recognition of simple (sets of horizontal and vertical lines, angles, and crosses) and complex (contour images of animate and inanimate objects) images forward-masked with stimuli of varying complexity were estimated in psychophysiological experiments. It was found that forward masking impaired recognition, the mask whose complexity was close to that of the given test image being the most efficient in each particular case. The masking effect was the strongest in the experiments where the sets of test and masking images coincided. Recognition of complex images proved to be more resistant to masking than recognition of simple images. The observed effects of forward masking are assumed to be determined by lateral inhibition and changes in the excitability cycle. The relative contributions of these mechanisms depend on the degree of similarity between the test and masking stimuli, as well as the hierarchical level of the visual cortex at which the test stimulus is “targeted.”  相似文献

The capability of monkeys for recognition and comparison by identity of two-dimensional images and three-dimensional objects of different color and number (from 1 to 5) was studied at solution of tasks of the “selection by sample” type. The study was carried out on two species of the lower monkeys of different levels of phylogenetic development: rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and brown capuchins (Cebus apella). Representatives of the studied monkey species were established to able to differentiate two-dimensional stimuli (images of squares) and three-dimensional stimuli (objects of rounded shape) of red, yellow, and green color in different quantitative ratios (from 1 to 5) by selecting identical signs when solving modifications of the “selection by sample” tasks. The obtained data indicate the presence in primates of numerical notion and their ability to differentiate objects in the number from 1 to 5 regardless of the color of these objects. Speciesspecific differences in monkeys were revealed; rhesus macaques, as compared with capuchins, experienced difficulties at solution of complex combinatory tasks. The obtained experimental results give grounds to believe the presence in the lower monkeys the notion “quantity” as well as of the sufficiently high level of pre-verbal thinking.  相似文献

The monkeys were established to be able to recognize and to compare by size the two-dimensional pictures and three-dimensional objects of red, yellow, and green colors with identification of the relative sign “more.” Solution of visual tasks of the “more-less” type was achieved at any combination of stimuli regardless of color. The age-and specie-related differences were revealed during the course of training. In all monkeys the “transfer of learning” and formation of generalization were traced. This indicates a sufficiently well developed level of elementary thinking in the lower monkeys.  相似文献

Larvae of Urechis caupo Fisher & MacGinitie, reared in the laboratory, were exposed to potential settlement stimuli, including natural sediment from adult burrows, and “scent” obtained from the skin of adult animals. Competent larvae settled rapidly and specifically in response to adult burrow sediment when compared with their responses to other natural and abiotic sediments. Larvae also responded specifically to chemical “scent” from adult animals when the “scent” of another echiuran worm, Listriolobus pelodes Fisher served as a control. Larval responses to chemical “scent” were as great as their responses to natural burrow sediment. Hence, it is likely that larvae settle gregariously in nature in response to “scent” on sediment grains of adult burrows. The chemical “scent” had a molecular weight between ≈3500 and 14000 daltons, as determined by dialysis. It quickly lost its effectiveness in promoting settlement after it was heated to 80 °C, but was relatively stable at ambient ocean temperatures, retaining its effectiveness for several days. It was soluble in sea water. However, larvae did not respond to the chemical “scent”, unless it was adsorbed onto a surface. Purely tactile stimuli, such as the shape, texture, and size-distribution of particles, were not important settlement cues during these experiments.  相似文献

Can nonhuman animals attend to visual stimuli as whole, coherent objects? We investigated this question by adapting for use with pigeons a task in which human participants must report whether two visual attributes belong to the same object (one-object trial) or to different objects (two-object trial). We trained pigeons to discriminate a pair of differently colored shapes that had two targets either on a single object or on two different objects. Each target equally often appeared on the one-object and two-object stimuli; therefore, a specific target location could not serve as a discriminative cue. The pigeons learned to report whether the two target dots were located on a single object or on two different objects; follow-up tests demonstrated that this ability was not entirely based on memorization of the dot patterns and locations. Additional tests disclosed predominate stimulus control by the color, but not by the shape of the two objects. These findings suggest that human psychophysical methods are readily applicable to the study of object discrimination by nonhuman animals.  相似文献

Cognitive theories in visual attention and perception, categorization, and memory often critically rely on concepts of similarity among objects, and empirically require measures of “sameness” among their stimuli. For instance, a researcher may require similarity estimates among multiple exemplars of a target category in visual search, or targets and lures in recognition memory. Quantifying similarity, however, is challenging when everyday items are the desired stimulus set, particularly when researchers require several different pictures from the same category. In this article, we document a new multidimensional scaling database with similarity ratings for 240 categories, each containing color photographs of 16–17 exemplar objects. We collected similarity ratings using the spatial arrangement method. Reports include: the multidimensional scaling solutions for each category, up to five dimensions, stress and fit measures, coordinate locations for each stimulus, and two new classifications. For each picture, we categorized the item''s prototypicality, indexed by its proximity to other items in the space. We also classified pairs of images along a continuum of similarity, by assessing the overall arrangement of each MDS space. These similarity ratings will be useful to any researcher that wishes to control the similarity of experimental stimuli according to an objective quantification of “sameness.”  相似文献

Complex behavior forms and the ability of monkeys to recognize and to compare by identity the two-dimensional images and three-dimensional objects of various colors in the amount from 5 to 9 were studied. The study was carried out on two species of the lower monkeys of different levels of phylogenetic development: on rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and on brown capuchins (Cebus apella). It has been established that the representatives of the studied monkey species are able to differentiate large counted multitudes of two-dimensional (images of squares) and three-dimensional (objects of round shape) stimuli of red, yellow, and green colors in different quantitative ratios—from 5 to 9 at solving modifications of task of the type “choice by the sample.” In the course of learning, species-related differences of the monkeys’ behavior are revealed. The brown capuchins managed solving all tasks and their combinations better than rhesus monkeys. The obtained data indicate the capability for recognition of counted multitudes (from 5 to 9) regardless of color of the stimuli and the existence of quantitative notions of the idea of “quantity” in the lower monkeys.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper characterizes the portrayal of animals and human-animal relations in one genre of American popular culture—the “supermarket” tabloid press. A total of 789 animal-related stories and photographs in 82 issues of four tabloid magazines were analyzed according to theme. The items fell into nine categories in which animals were portrayed as objects of affection, saviors, threats, victims, things to be used, sex objects, imaginary and mythological beings, surrogate humans, and objects of wonder. It is argued that these themes represent archetypes reflecting the roles that animals have had in human cultural and psychological life since the historical origins of our species.  相似文献

Recognition of shape of natural objects was studied during lateralized tachistoscopic presentation and different degree of noise-like ("rain drops") masking in 15 healthy subjects. Two sets of figures were used: halftone and contour ones. In all masking conditions, the mean group data showed a significantly better recognition of contour images by the left hemisphere as compared to the right hemisphere. The probability of correct response decreased with increase in the degree of masking. Contour figures were recognized significantly better than halftone figures. Gender differences in recognition were revealed. Male subjects displayed no hemispheric preference in recognition of both types of stimuli in both masking conditions. Possible neurophysiological mechanisms and functional significance of the findings are discussed.  相似文献

In the locustid Locusta migratoria and the tettigoniids Decticus verrucivorus and Tettigonia cantans, comparative aspects of physiological properties of vibratory/auditory ventral-cord neurones were studied by single cell recordings.These neurones all receive inputs from both vibratory and auditory receptors. Nevertheless, they can be classified into “V neurones” responding preferentially to vibration stimuli, “VS neurones” responding to vibration and airborne sound, and “S neurones” responding preferentially to airborne sound. In every group, there are several types with different physiological properties, normally represented by one neurone on each body side.In Locusta and in the tettigoniid species, the same physiological types of vibratory/auditory neurones were found, although there are differences in the synaptic connectivity of the vibration receptors of the different legs. In Locusta, the middle leg receptors have the strongest influence on the generation of suprathreshold responses of the central neurones, whereas in the tettigoniids the receptors of the ipsilateral fore leg are the most influential.Two of the V neurones receive inputs mainly from campaniform sensilla and other low-frequency vibration receptors, the other V and VS neurones are mainly influenced by the subgenual receptors. Central information processing results in preferential responses to different frequency/intensity ranges in different neurones.Most VS neurone types show the same response characteristics (e.g. time pattern of response, habituation) either to vibration or to airborne-sound stimuli. Simultaneous presentation of both stimuli leads to qualitative changes in the response characteristics. Therefore, the co-processing of auditory and vibratory signals seems to be very important in the acoustic behaviour of grasshoppers.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to analyze sex-related differences in spontaneous and evoked brain activity. The study included 11 women and 10 men aged between 18 and 27 years; the subjects were adapted to the conditions of electrophysiological experiment. Differences in spontaneous activity were estimated by EEG spectral characteristics in frequency ranges corresponding to θ, α, β1, β2, γ1, and γ2 rhythms at rest with the eyes open and closed. The differences in evoked activity were estimated by the parameters of evoked potentials (EP) recorded upon the presentation of different types of stimuli (images and words) and categories (“fruits” and “vessels”). Behavioral differences were estimated by the efficiency of stimuli recognition. No gender differences were observed in the efficiency of stimuli recognition (number of errors, time of reaction). In the EEG of male subjects at rest, fast frequencies (β and γ) were less marked than in the female subjects, which may indicate a higher level of activation of CNS structures in women. Regardless of stimuli type and category, the amplitude of EP components in men is lower than that in women, which may be caused by lower level of CNS activation. However, the difference in the latency of EP components depended on the type of stimuli used. During the recognition of visual images, the latency of earlier EP components (N1, P2) in men was longer mostly on back and/or right electrodes. The latencies of the later EP components (P3, N3) in male subjects were longer on the back electrodes and shorter on the front electrodes than those in female ones. During the recognition of words, the latency of P1, N1, P2 and N2 components in men were shorter on temporal and temporoparietal electrodes of the left hemisphere. This may indicate that visual image in men are perceived slower but comprehended faster than in women. On the other hand, verbal stimuli in men were perceived faster but comprehended slower than in women.  相似文献

Abstract

Metaphors, such as those used in the title of this article, are often useful for the comprehension of specialised topics in plant biology. A brief attempt is made to elucidate one of these metaphors, plant “intelligence”, as it relates to the plastic responses of roots and root systems to their environment. Tropisms and nastic movements of root apices are two expressions of an inherent plasticity of form exhibited by roots. In soil, roots are exposed to multiple stimuli, many of which can potentially elicit such movements. Hence, a key question is how roots respond to and process the different stimuli which simultaneously reach their surfaces. Assuming that roots always use the same site along their length to express their movement responses, and that they also use an auxin‐based information‐transduction pathway, the most evident choices for the processing of stimuli are that roots either prioritise the various incoming stimuli and respond only to the strongest or they amalgamate stimuli and mount an averaged compromise response to all of them. The proposal that plants may be “intelligent”, especially in respect to their plastic growth responses, is one that draws upon knowledge of this faculty from animal biology. Also implied is that plants and animals are sufficiently similar to share usage of this term “intelligence”. But an alternative view is that plants and animals are sufficiently different and so intelligence is an unfitting term. Following the line of enquiry into creative evolution initiated by Henri Bergson, plants can be viewed differently to animals. The tendency of plants is towards instinctive behaviour rather than intelligent behaviour.  相似文献

Triosephosphate isomerase (EC 5.3.1.1) has been purified from young and old Tubatrix aceti. The enzyme shows a sharply lower specific activity in homogenates from old nematodes compared to similar preparations from young animals. However, when the enzyme activity of the respective homogenates was adjusted to the same level, equal amounts of antiserum (prepared to pure “young” triosephosphate isomerase) were required to remove the activity. Therefore, the lower specific activity observed in “old” homogenates was due to the presence of less enzyme and not to “altered” enzyme. The same results were obtained by immunotitrations of pure preparations of “young” and “old” enzyme. Moreover, in contrast to results reported for other enzymes, the specific activity of “old” triosephosphate isomerase, during purification, rose to the same value as that of pure “young” enzyme. The evidence indicates that altered triosephosphate isomerase does not exist in old T. aceti. The above results contradict the idea of an “error theory” in which all proteins would develop altered sequences. Pure triosephosphate isomerase (old or young) from T. aceti consists of two subunits, each of molecular weight 26,500. No isozymes could be detected.  相似文献

IN the course of experiments in which movements were elicited by direct electrical stimulation of the cerebral cortex, Graham-Brown1–4 and Sherrington5 found that, after each train of stimuli, there were prolonged changes in the excitability of the cortex. They showed that the motor responses of forelimb muscles in primates, even though elicited by identical cortical stimuli, could be extremely variable. Two of the phenomena they described in detail (see also Lilly6) were “facilitation” (the increased motor response resulting from a second train of stimuli when it was applied within 20 s after the first train) and “reversal of response” (when repeated, identical stimulation of the same cortical point elicited flexion instead of extension, or vice versa).  相似文献

ObjectiveWe compared two reconstruction methods for 18fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) images with “attenuation weighted ordered subset expectation maximization” using either the manufacturer-provided (AW-OSEM) or a “Detector response” (AW-OSEM DR) tomographic operator. We looked at the feasibility of using the latter reconstruction for radiotherapy target volumes definition in cancers of the superior aero-digestive tract (VADS). In this preliminary study, we first assessed the spatial resolution of images obtained with AW-OSEM and AW-OSEM DR on a Biograph™ 6, and secondly target volumes of radiotherapy “Gross Tumor Volume” (GTV), “Clinical Target Volume” (CTV) and “Planning Target Volume” (PTV) obtained with each of these reconstruction methods.Material and methodsThe spatial resolution was measured on a test object containing 4 radioactive point sources. Furthermore, radiotherapy target volumes have been defined with the software Eclipse™ on injected scanner (CT IV) and PET/CT (PET AW-OSEM and PET AW-OSEM DR) images.ResultsSpatial resolution was improved with AW-OSEM DR algorithm reconstruction compared to images obtained with AW-OSEM reconstruction (from 7.5 mm down to 5.4 mm for the highest reduction). GTV from AW-OSEM DR reconstruction with 42 and 50% of the “Standard uptake value maximum” (SUVmax) semi-automatic threshold (1.2 and 0.7 cm3 respectively) were lower than those obtained with AW-OSEM (3.6 and 2.2 cm3 respectively). They were also lower than GTV defined with CT IV (5.5 cm3). It was the same for CTV and PTV.ConclusionThis study showed that AW-OSEM DR reconstruction method allows less impaired spatial resolution than AW-OSEM. In the case of radiotherapy target volumes delineation, AW-OSEM DR may decrease the GTV, CTV and PTV and therefore the risk of side effects associated with organs at risk.  相似文献

The landing response of tethered flying blowflies, Calliphora erythrocephala, was elicited by moving periodic gratings, and by stripes moving apart. The influence of binocular interactions on the landing response was investigated by comparing the responses of intact (“binocular”) animals to the response of flies which had one eye covered with black paint (“monocular” flies) effectively eliminating the input from this eye. Directions of motion eliciting a maximal response (preference direction) were determined in intact animals, and in “molecular” flies for different regions of the visual field. Preference directions determined in “monocular” flies follow the orientation of Z-axes (Fig. 4). Preference directions determined in intact animals and in “monocular” flies differ in the binocular eye region: in intact animals, the preference directions corresponds to vertical directions of motion; whereas the preference direction determined for the same area in “monocular” flies are inclined obliquely against the vertical plane. Sex-specific differences were found for the ventral binocular eye region in which the shift of preference directions is more pronounced in male than in female flies. The experimental data support the hypothesis that elementary movement detectors are aligned along the Z-axes of the eye, and that preference directions deviating from the orientation of elementary movement detectors are caused by binocular interactions.  相似文献

Theoretical accounts as well as behavioral studies reporting animacy effects offer inconsistent and sometimes contradictory results. A possible explanation for these inconsistencies may be inadvertent biases in the stimuli selected for test – with category-specific effects driven by characteristics of test stimuli other than animacy per se. In this study, we pit animacy against feature structure (intra-item variability), in a picture-word matching task. For unimpaired adults, regardless of whether objects were from animate (mammals; insects) or inanimate (clothes; musical instruments) superordinate categories, participants were faster to match basic level labels with objects from categories with low intra-item variability (mammals; clothes) than from categories with high intra-item variability (insects; instruments). Thus, pitting animacy against variability allowed us to clarify that observable differences in processing speed between animals and instruments are systematically driven by the intra-item variability of the superordinate categories, and not by animacy itself.  相似文献

Targeting drug formulations to specific tissues and releasing the bioactive content in response to a certain stimuli remains a significant challenge in the field of biomedical science. We have developed a nanovehicle that can be used to deliver “drugs” to “specific” tissues. For this, we have simultaneously modified the surface of the nanovehicle with “drugs” and “tissue-specific ligands”. The “tissue-specific ligands” will target the nanovehicle to the correct tissue and release the “drug” of interest in response to specific stimuli. We have synthesised a “lactose surface-modified gold nanovehicle” to target liver cells and release the model fluorescent drug (coumarin derivative) in response to the differential glutathione concentration (between blood plasma and liver cells). Lactose is used as the liver-specific targeting ligand given the abundance of l-galactose receptors in hepatic cells. The coumarin derivative is used as a fluorescent tag as well as a linker for the attachment of various biologically relevant molecules. The model delivery system is compatible with a host of different ligands and hence could be used to target other tissues as well in future. The synthesised nanovehicle was found to be non-toxic to cultured human cell lines even at elevated non-physiological concentrations as high as 100 μg/mL. We discover that the synthesised gold-based nanovehicle shows considerable stability at low extracellular glutathione concentrations; however coumarin is selectively released at high hepatic glutathione concentration.  相似文献

Sensitivity to the fungus Alternaria is associated with asthma persistence and severity. Current therapeutic options for treating Alternaria-induced airway inflammation are limited. In this study, Brown Norway rats are used to study the effectiveness of a DNA-based vaccine delivered to the airway in attenuating the response to a major Alternaria allergen, rAlt a 2. Compared to untreated sensitized animals, or animals receiving an “out-of-frame” DNA-based vaccine, animals treated with “in-frame” DNA vaccine showed an attenuation in specific IgE antibody titers to rAlt a 2, an increase in IgG2b (a Th1 response), a reduction in spontaneous IL-13 release by peribronchial lymph node cell suspensions, and an attenuation in the decrease in total lung capacity 72 h post-allergen challenge. Further, histopathologic examination of the lung tissues revealed reduced pulmonary inflammation post-allergen challenge in the DNA-vaccine-treated compared to sensitized, untreated animals. We conclude that a DNA-based vaccine delivered to the airway significantly influences the immunologic, pulmonary physiologic, and histological alterations induced by challenge with a major Alternaria allergen, rAlt a 2, in sensitized animals.  相似文献

A graphical method is presented which allows the prediction of phase resetting curves of circadian rhythms for both type 1 and type 0 resetting, starting from one experimentally determined phase resetting curve. Calculations were based on literature data for the pupal eclosion rhythm of Drosophila pseudoobscura. The method is based on the assumption that for all practical purposes the rhythm may be approached as a “simple clock”, i.e. an oscillator with only one state variable, namely its phase or circadian time, CT. Besides predicting both “types” of phase resetting the method is capable to locate the “position” of the phase singularity and thus the transition from type 1 to type 0 resetting. This graphical method is an elaboration of the “transformation method”, developed in 1972 by A. Johnsson and H. G. Karlsson, which was effective in predicting phase resetting by “strong” stimuli, but failed in the case of “weak” stimuli. Predictions made using the extended transformation method are in good agreement with experimental results obtained with Drosophila. Also for the flesh fly, Sarcophaga argyrostoma, a prediction is made of the position of the phase singularity of the eclosion rhythm and compared with experimental results.  相似文献
