Parents can increase the fitness of their offspring by allocating nutrients to eggs and/or providing care for eggs and offspring. Although we have a good understanding of the adaptive significance of both egg size and parental care, remarkably little is known about the co-evolution of these two mechanisms for increasing offspring fitness. Here, we report a parental removal experiment on the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides in which we test whether post-hatching parental care masks the effect of egg size on offspring fitness. As predicted, we found that the parent's presence or absence had a strong main effect on larval body mass, whereas there was no detectable effect of egg size. Furthermore, egg size had a strong and positive effect on offspring body mass in the parent's absence, whereas it had no effect on offspring body mass in the parent's presence. These results support the suggestion that the stronger effect of post-hatching parental care on offspring growth masks the weaker effect of egg size. We found no correlation between the number and size of eggs. However, there was a negative correlation between larval body mass and brood size in the parent's presence, but not in its absence. These findings suggest that the trade-off between number and size of offspring is shifted from the egg stage towards the end of the parental care period and that post-hatching parental care somehow moderates this trade-off.  相似文献

Certain predominant forms of mating and parental care systems are assumed in several model species among birds, but the opportunistic and apparently infrequent variations of “family structures” may often remain hidden due to methodological limitations with regard to genetic or behavioral observations. One of the intensively studied model species, the collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis), is usually characterized by social monogamy with polyterritorial, facultative social polygyny, and frequent extrapair mating and extrapair paternity. During a brood‐size manipulation experiment, we observed two females and a male delivering food at an enlarged brood. A combination of breeding phenology data (egg laying and hatching date), behavioral data (feeding rates) from video recordings at 10 days of nestling age, and microsatellite genotyping for maternity and paternity suggests a situation of an unrelated female helping a pair in chick rearing. Such observations highlight the relevance of using traditional techniques and genetic analyses together to assess the parental roles within a population, which becomes more important where individuals may dynamically switch from their main and presupposed roles according to the actual environmental conditions.  相似文献

Models of parental investment often assume a trade-off for males between providing care and seeking additional mating opportunities. It is not obvious, however, how such additional matings should be accounted for in a consistent population model, because deserting males might increase their fertilization success at the cost of either caring males, other deserting males or both. Here, we present a game theory model that addresses all of these possibilities in a general way. In contrast to earlier work, we find that the source of deserting males' additional matings is irrelevant to the evolutionary stability of male care. We reject the claim that fitness gains through male care are intrinsically less valuable than those through desertion, and that the former must therefore be down-weighted by 1/2 when compared with the latter.  相似文献

Parental energy expenditure of the male three-spined stickleback   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The energy expenditure of male three-spined sticklebacks performing parental care was 12·3 and 9·9 J g−1 h−1 estimated by respirometry and ration manipulation, respectively. The energy expenditure of caring male sticklebacks was significantly higher than for non-caring males.  相似文献

Within the size range found in the field for the scissortail sergeant Abudefduf sexfasciatus , there was no correlation between the number of cannibalized eggs and total brood size. Very small broods were fully cannibalized. In a manipulation experiment, males were provided with broods of one of three standardized sizes: at the two extremes and in the middle of the range of naturally occurring broods. Brood size had no effect on partial filial cannibalism, but parental effort increased with increasing brood size. Field correlates and the manipulation experiment showed that the cost of cannibalism in terms of current reproductive success decreased significantly with increasing brood size. Contrary to expectations, there was no relationship between male size and the incidence of cannibalism. No preference for younger eggs was found either from field correlates or from a manipulative experiment in which males were provided with an equal number of young and old eggs at the beginning of the parental phase.  相似文献

The assumption that reproduction is costly is central to life‐history theory. Good evidence supporting this premise comes from studies, mostly in short‐lived invertebrates, demonstrating a negative relationship between reproduction and longevity. Whether this trade‐off operates broadly, for example in males and females and in short‐ and long‐lived organisms, remains unresolved. We found a negative relationship between reproduction and days survived in captive, wild‐caught, individuals of a long‐lived poison frog with biparental care (Oophaga pumilio). The proportion of time that individuals spent paired and tadpole production rate were negatively associated with days survived in both sexes, and clutch production was negatively associated with days survived in females. These results broaden the taxonomic base upon which this tenet of life‐history theory is built, empirically confirm that females of this species should be choosy when selecting mates and caring for offspring, and suggest that the costs of ‘limited’ male care in this species deserve re‐evaluation. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 115 , 211–218.  相似文献

The maternal and paternal behavior of Kerodon rupestris was examined. Quantitative differences between fathers and mothers and between mothers raising young with fathers present and with fathers absent were assessed. Growth rates of young raised by paired females and by lone females were compared. The male provides direct paternal care to the young by engaging in allogrooming, sniffing, and huddling. There is no significant difference between the sexes in the amount of contact promoting behavior given to the offspring, nor are the sexes significantly different in the amount of exploratory sniffing of the offspring. When the male is absent, the female spends a greater amount of time in contact with the young. Young raised by lone females gained significantly more weight than young raised by paired females. The suggestion that indirect paternal care acts to reduce female aggression to the young and relieve the energy expenditure burden of the female is discussed. The results indicate that social experience is gained at the expense of physical nurturing when the male is present.  相似文献

Strong asymmetries in parental care, with one sex providing more care than the other, are widespread across the animal kingdom. At present, two factors are thought to ultimately cause sex differences in care: certainty of parentage and sexual selection. By contrast, we here show that the coevolution of care and the ability to care can result in strong asymmetries in both the ability to care and the level of care, even in the absence of these factors. While the coevolution of care and the ability to care does not predict which sex evolves to care more than the other, once other factors give rise to even the slightest differences in the cost and benefits of care between the sexes (e.g. differences in certainty in parentage), a clear directionality emerges; the sex with the lower cost or higher benefit of care evolves both to be more able to care and to provide much higher levels of care than the other sex. Our findings suggest that the coevolution of levels of care and the ability to care may be a key factor underlying the evolution of sex differences in care.  相似文献

Human males are remarkable among mammals in the level of investment they provide to their wives and children. However, there has been debate as to the degree to which men actually invest and through which fitness pathways the benefits of familial investment are realized. Much of the previous research exploring these issues has focused on men's roles as providers, but few have explored correlates of men's direct parental care. Although this is reasonable given men's parental emphasis on provisioning, the providing of direct care is more straightforward with a clear provider and recipient and little ambiguity as to the care‐giver's intent. Here, we explore contextual correlates of men's direct care among the Tsimane of Bolivia to determine the extent to which such care is patterned to enhance its effectiveness in increasing child wellbeing and the efficient functioning of the family. We also explore whether Tsimane fathers provide care in ways that enhance the positive effect it has on the wife's perception of the care provider. Overall, we find that Tsimane men appear responsive to the needs of children and the family, but show that there is little evidence that men respond to factors expected to increase the impact that men's care has on their reputations with their wives. Synopsis Intraspecific brood-mixing of a Tanganyikan biparental cichlid fish Perissodus microlepis has been attributed to farming-out, a behaviour in which a parent transport some or all of their free-swimming young in the mouth and put them under the care of other guarding parents. We conducted observations under natural conditions to understand how often farming-out occurs and which sex is the primary performer. At most brooding sites, young in a school entirely disappeared before attaining to the size of independence. At many of these sites, farming-out and its precursory behaviours by males preceded disappearance of their young. Females never performed farming-out. We proposed that farming-out by males is an alternative tactics to brood desertion to evade paternal roles for remating.  相似文献

Mature males of nurseryfish have a hook on their head to which the eggs become attached and are carried like a bunch of grapes. This paper examines the anatomy and histology of the hook. The osteological basis of the hook is shown to be a modification of the supraoccipital crest of the skull covered by typical teleost skin. The integument in the cleft of the hook, where the eggs are attached, is considerably different from ordinary fish skin. The stratified epidermis is devoid of secretory mucus and neurosensory cells and is folded into crypts that extend deeply into the dermis. This may be a specialization that facilitates adhesion of the sticky egg mass. Field observations show that this cleft area of the hook is edematous, and histology confirms that the area is highly vascularized. We speculate that this may facilitate gas exchange and/or nutrition between the male and the egg mass, but this can only be confirmed by physiological experiments with pregnant males in captivity. Engorgement with blood in the highly vascularised dermis of the hook may help hold the egg mass in place.  相似文献

The grass goby Zosterisessor ophiocephalus sperm‐duct gland extract displayed antimicrobial activity against gram‐positive and gram‐negative bacteria. This suggests that sperm‐duct gland mucins might be functional in protecting eggs and possibly parents from pathogens, an activity of great adaptive value for Z. ophiocephalus, which lays eggs in mud nests.  相似文献

Sex differences in responsiveness to begging in a cooperative mammal   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In species where young are provisioned by both parents, males commonly contribute less to parental care than females, and are less responsive to variation in begging rates. Similar differences in the care of young occur among adults in cooperative breeders, but fewer studies have investigated whether these are associated with differences in responsiveness. Here, we present results from a playback experiment investigating responsiveness to begging in the meerkat (Suricata suricatta), a cooperatively breeding mammal. Although increased begging rate raised the feeding rate of adults of both sexes, there was no consistent tendency for females to be more responsive than males. However, when we examined changes in the proportion of food items found that were fed to pups (generosity), we found that females were more responsive than males to increased begging rate. These results can be explained in terms of sex differences in dispersal: in meerkats, females are philopatric and receive considerable benefits from investing in young, both directly, by increasing group size, and indirectly, by recruiting helpers if they inherit the breeding position. In addition, they emphasize that generosity provides a more sensitive measure of responsiveness to begging than feeding rate, as it accounts for variation in foraging success.  相似文献

A bibliography and categorization of bony fishes exhibiting parental care   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Parental care occurs in a diversity of fishes, but predominantly among freshwater groups. Among the approximately 422 families of bony fishes (Osteichthyes), 89 are presently known to exhibit parental care. Grouping these families into eight categories, based on the sex of the care-giver(s), reveals male parental care is as common or more common than female parental care. Although unusual among vertebrates, parental care by males alone is very common among bony fishes. Lists of families, the forms of parental care exhibited, the modes of fertilization, the environments in which reproduction occurs, and the sources of documentation are presented. An extensive bibliography and index are provided.  相似文献
