Zooplankton population dynamics were studied along a 120 kmsection of the River Moselle, in France, and at one locationalong the Belgian course of the River Meuse. Community compositionand population densities were assessed on fresh material. Rotifersoverwhelmingly dominated the zooplankton of both rivers, especiallyin the Meuse where microcrustaceans were abundant only seasonally. The maximal densities recorded lie in the range of values commonlyreported for large European rivers. Zooplankton dynamics inthese two rivers are discussed in relation to their hydrologicalcharacteristics, differing morphologies and degree of regulation.  相似文献

Observations on phyto and zooplankton in two hydrographically different rivers were compared in order to discriminate phases in plankton development. Along the longitudinal axis of the River Rhine a gradual increase in the development of phytoplankton was observed, which reached its maximumca. 100 km before the river flows into its artificial sedimentation area. The development of rotifer populations was slightly retarded as compared with that of phytoplankton and highest population densities were only reached in the sedimentation area. Crustaceans developed in significant numbers, not until the river water had entered the sedimentation area. Development of zooplankton coincided here with a strong decrease in the density of phytoplankton. A similar trend in plankton development was observed in the River Meuse, although in this river the highest densities of phyto and zooplankton already occurred in its middle reaches. The differences in the timing of plankton growth in the two rivers are probably caused by differences in flow regime between both rivers. The River Rhine, which is fed by rainwater and melting of glaciers in the Alps, has a relatively constant discharge. On the other hand, the low discharge of the rain-fed River Meuse combined with an increased residence time of the water as a consequence of large numbers of weirs, allows a full cycle of plankton development long before its discharge into the sea. This phenomenon was also reflected in the silicate cycle in the Meuse, where the consumption by planktonic diatoms and the regeneration of silicate of deposits seem to be important. In contrast, in the main branches of the River Rhine only the effects of silicate consumption were detectable.  相似文献

The persistence of plankton in flowing water presents an enigma, i.e., how can populations be sustained while constantly losing individuals downriver? We examined the distribution and abundance of zooplankton from 146 sites on the Missouri River (USA) and found large shifts in the dominance of major taxa between management zones of this regulated river. Crustacean zooplankton were dominant in the inter-reservoir zone of the river, and their taxonomic composition was similar to regional lakes and reservoirs. The exponential decline of cladocerans and copepods with distance from main-stem dams suggests that conditions within the river are adverse to population growth and that reservoirs are the main source of these crustaceans in the river. Rotifers dominated in the channelized zone of the river. High algal biomass and rapid population growth rates likely allow persistence of rotifers in segments of the river that do not receive direct reservoir inputs. Rotifers were less abundant in the inter-reservoir zone, suggesting that their numbers are limited by internal processes, such as food or predators. Since zooplankton are known to be an important food for larval fishes in rivers, this shift of major taxa in regulated rivers has implications for river food webs.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative aspects of the phytoplankton of the River Meuse were studied during 1992, at a point 537 km from the source. The phytoplankton was dominated by diatoms and green algae. The Stephanodiscus hantzschii-group was especially prominent. Other important taxa were Cyclotella meneghiniana, small Cyclotella and Thalassiosira, Aulacoseira ambigua and Nitzschia acicularis. Cell abundances varied from less than 1000 units ml–1 to about 25 000 – 30 000 units ml–1 during the blooms. The Stephanodiscus hantzchii-group constituted almost entirely the first spring bloom. During the summer period, small Thalassiosiraceae developed markedly and large Thalassiosira weissflogii appeared. During this period, green algae dominated diatoms as expressed in cell abundances. The main Chlorococcales were Scenedesmus quadricauda, Scenedesmus div. sp., Dictyosphaerium ehrenbergianum and Pediastrum duplex. Dinophyceae contributed a significant biomass during the summer period. Total biomass varied between 100 and 3 650 µg Cl–1. As previously observed (Descy, 1987), the factors regulating the phytoplankton growth were clearly physical variables: discharge, temperature and irradiance. However, in the summer period, low abundances might indicate a regulation by biotic factors. The impact of grazing by zooplankton is discussed, on the basis of observations of zooplankton development in the River Meuse and on the basis of simulation by a mathematical model. A comparison is carried out with recent data of phytoplankton in large European rivers.  相似文献

As the ecologically important recipient channels for riverine ecosystems, tributaries provide unique microhabitats for microorganisms, among which zooplankton constitutes the most important heterotrophic organisms. In particular, the reduced water velocity caused by dams is more favorable for zooplankton development; therefore, dammed rivers are expected to support extremely diverse and abundant zooplankton communities and notably different spatiotemporal distribution patterns. So far, however, only very few molecular studies support these assumptions. Using high-throughput sequencing, a high number of 350 operational taxonomic units(OTUs; 97% cutoff) were retrieved from 30 samples collected in the Xiangxi River, the nearest large tributary upstream of the Three Gorges Dam. Zooplankton did not show significant spatial distribution in the channel. Instead, the community structures varied significantly over sampling dates, corroborating the seasonal patterns found in lakes and ponds in the subtropical zone. As expected, the community compositions were deterministically governed by environmental filtering processes(phylogenetic clustering), in which water velocity appeared to be much less important than other investigated environmental factors. Moreover, most of the detected phylotypes(OTUs) had a relatively high(90%) sequence similarity to previously deposited sequences, suggesting a mediocre degree of genetic novelty within the zooplankton communities in the Xiangxi River.  相似文献

Freshwater populations of the Indo-pacific region are characterized by a large proportion of amphidromous species. In this paper, we analyse habitat selection by two amphidromous sympatric Gobiidae: Sicyopterus lagocephalus and Cotylopus acutipinnis in Reunion Island. A sampling method using Point Abundance Sampling (PAS) was conducted in 12 rivers. We used mixed logistic models in order to examine the presence probability of species according to location, downstream-upstream gradient, microhabitat variables (depth, velocity and predominant substrata) and presence of conspecifics and sympatric species. Presence probabilities varied between the sampled rivers. We observed a positive attraction between identical developmental stages of both species, which suggests that social interactions or similar preferences for environmental cues influenced their distribution. The presence probabilities of both species’ juveniles decreased from downstream to upstream. We showed that traditional microhabitat variables weakly explained the spatial distribution of both S. lagocephalus and C. acutipinnis, in Reunion Island. We suggest that weak habitat selection for these species is consistent with the amphidromous life style because of the unpredictability of juvenile settlement and the extreme hydrological variations in tropical rivers.  相似文献

Since its appearance in 2006 in a freshwater section of the Rhine–Meuse estuary (Hollandsch Diep, The Netherlands), the non-indigenous quagga mussel has displayed a rapid range expansion in Western Europe. However, an overview characterising the spread and impacts of the quagga mussel in this area is currently lacking. A literature study, supplemented with field data, was performed to gather all available data and information relating to quagga mussel dispersal. Dispersal characteristics were analysed for rate and direction and in relation to hydrological connectivity and dispersal vectors. To determine ranges of conditions suitable for quagga mussel colonisation, physico-chemical characteristics of their habitats were analysed. After its initial arrival in the freshwater section of the Rhine-Meuse estuary and River Danube, the quagga mussel demonstrated a rapid and continued range expansion in Western Europe. Quagga mussels have extended their non-native range to the network of major waterways in The Netherlands and in an upstream direction in the River Rhine (Germany), its tributaries (rivers Main and Moselle) and the River Meuse (Belgium and France). The calculated average quagga mussel dispersal rate in Europe was 120 km year?1 (range 23–383 km year?1). Hydrological connectivity is important in determining the speed with which colonisation occurs. Dispersal to water bodies disconnected from the freshwater network requires the presence of a suitable vector e.g. pleasure boats transferred over land. Upstream dispersal is primarily human mediated through the attachment of mussels to watercraft. The relative abundance of quagga mussel to zebra mussel has greatly increased in a number of areas sampled in the major Dutch rivers and lakes and the rivers Main and Rhine and the Rhine–Danube Canal leading to a dominance shift from zebra mussels to quagga mussels. However, evidence for displacement of the zebra mussel is limited due to the lack of temporal trends relating to the overall density of zebra and quagga mussel.  相似文献

This study used stratified random sampling to examine the spatial and temporal distribution of zooplankton communities in a large floodplain river (Mississippi River, USA). Potential mechanisms controlling zooplankton abundance and community structure were considered. Main channel and backwater habitats included in this study differed between a turbid upper pool reach where aquatic macrophytes were sparse and a lower pool reach which was considerably less turbid and had extensive aquatic macrophyte coverage. Samples were collected monthly during the summer over a 2-year period and multivariate analysis was used to examine the spatial and temporal distribution of zooplankton. Significant differences were found in zooplankton density and community composition among habitats and reaches within the pool. Rotifers were the dominant taxa and seasonality was pronounced, with peak densities often occurring in late-spring. Community structure varied by habitat and reach, which suggests that water quality, physical habitat characteristics, presence of aquatic macrophytes, and zooplankton sources can all influence the zooplankton communities of the Upper Mississippi River. Characterization of the zooplankton communities provides a basis for understanding changes in the river ecosystem and examination of zooplankton communities among habitats provides insight into the mechanisms affecting zooplankton dynamics.  相似文献

Summary The seasonal occurrence ofAtyaephyra desmaresti in The Netherlands has been studied by sampling the cooling-water filtering screens of power stations situated along the rivers Rhine and Meuse. The shrimps were only found in large numbers at the two power stations with vegetation in the cooling-water intake areas. Fluctuations in the seasonal occurrence showed great similarity for these two localities. Highest numbers of shrimps were impinged in November. High numbers also occurred in September, while a lower peak in numbers was found in May.Changes in the numbers of records during the last 30 years in The Netherlands were compared with climatological fluctuations (severe or mild winters), indicating that this mainly southern-European species is living here at the limits of its ecological and geographical range. The distribution in The Netherlands reveals thatAtyaephyra desmaresti mainly occurs in freshwater habitats, although it tolerates higher chlorinities.  相似文献

Vertical, lateral and longitudinal movement of zooplankton in a large river   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. The spatial distribution and movement patterns of zooplankton in large rivers are little known compared with those in lake environments. We conducted a series of studies in the Ohio River (U.S.A.) during the low flow period to assess diel vertical (DVM), longitudinal and lateral movement of crustacean zooplankton. 2. The dominant large zooplankter, the copepod Eurytemora affinis, showed a consistent vertical migration pattern of daytime ascent and night‐time descent during all sampling periods – the reverse of the most common migratory pattern of zooplankton in lakes. The cladoceran Bosmina migrated in a similar way in two of the three sampling periods. Surveys taken longitudinally in the river showed similar trends for both taxa. 3. During the lateral surveys, E. affinis was significantly more abundant in the shallow littoral zone during the night than in the daytime. The combination of vertical and lateral movement patterns along with the diel distribution of zooplanktivorous fish suggest that these movements are a predator‐avoidance mechanism. 4. Sampling programmes in large rivers should consider that larger zooplankton such as E. affinis may not be randomly distributed in the river channel and behaviours such as diel vertical migration may be just as evident in river habitats as in lakes.  相似文献

Floodplain lakes along the rivers Lower Rhine and Meuse in TheNetherlands can be categorized according to their hydrologyand geomorphology. The impact of hydrology on the summer planktoncommunity composition in 100 floodplain lakes was studied bymultivariate analyses (TWINSPAN, FLEXCLUS, DCA) of relativeabundance data of plankton. The phyto- and zooplankton communitycomposition in floodplain lakes is clearly related to hydrology, relevant nutritional resources and habitat characteristics, mainly via input of N and P from the eutrophic main channelsduring floods. The plankton species richness was related tothe complexity of habitats formed by the presence of aquaticvegetation. There was a good agreement between the ecologicaland the environmental characterization of site groups. Cyanobacteria,Chlorophyta and filter-feeding zooplankton taxa associated withopen water are characteristic for floodplain lakes with a longannual flood duration, low Si/N and Si/P ratios, and a poorlydeveloped aquatic vegetation. Bacillariophyceae and scrapingzooplankton taxa associated with aquatic macrophytes are characteristicfor floodplain lakes with a short annual flood duration, highSi/N and Si/P ratios, and a well-developed aquatic vegetation. It is concluded that the restoration of connections betweenrarely flooded lakes and the highly eutrophic main channelsof the Lower Rhine and Meuse will result in hypertrophic conditionsand a reduced plankton diversity in these lakes.  相似文献

1. The fish fauna of many shallow Mediterranean Lakes is dominated by small‐bodied exotic omnivores, with potential implications for fish–zooplankton interactions still largely unknown. Here we studied diel variation in the vertical and horizontal distribution of the crustacean plankton in Lake Vela, a shallow polymictic and eutrophic lake. Diel sampling was carried out on three consecutive days along a horizontal transect, including an open‐water station and a macrophyte (Nymphaea alba) bed. Since transparency is a key determinant of the predation risk posed by fish, the zooplankton sampling campaigns were conducted in both the turbid (autumn) and clear water (spring) phases. 2. In the turbid phase, most taxa were homogeneously distributed along the vertical and horizontal axes in the three consecutive days. The only exception was for copepod nauplii, which showed vertical heterogeneity, possibly as a response to invertebrate predators. 3. In the clear water phase, most zooplankton taxa displayed habitat selection. Vertically, the general response consisted of a daily vertical migration (DVM), despite the limited depth (1.6 m). Horizontally, zooplankters showed an overall preference for the pelagic zone, independent of the time of the day. Such evidence is contrary to the postulated role of macrophytes as an anti‐predator refuge for the zooplankton. 4. These vertical (DVM) and horizontal (macrophyte‐avoidance) patterns were particularly conspicuous for large Daphnia, suggesting that predation risk from size‐selective predators (fish) was the main factor behind the spatial heterogeneity of zooplankton in the spring. Thus, the difference in the zooplankton spatial distribution pattern and habitat selection among seasons (turbid and clear water phases) seems to be mediated the predation risk from fish, which is directly related to water transparency. 5. The zooplankton in Lake Vela have anti‐predator behaviour that minimises predation from fish. We hypothesise that, due to the distinct fish community of shallow Mediterranean lakes, aquatic macrophytes may not provide adequate refuge to zooplankters, as seen in northern temperate lakes.

1. Zooplankton density was examined in a free-flowing section of the River Danube, Austria. Spatial and temporal patterns were used to identify mechanisms regulating zooplankton dynamics. 2. Zooplankton abundance differed significantly between sampling sites. These differences were the result of variations in water residence time within the habitats. Inshore habitats with low flushing rates act as storage zones for zooplankton. 3. The hydrological conditions govern the number and size of storage zones. In the study area, the highest availability of storage zones was observed at medium water level. 4. Total zooplankton numbers, total rotifer numbers and the densities of the most abundant rotifer taxa were significantly positively related to the availability of adjacent storage zones. 5. The present authors propose that inshore retention capacity, and the hydrological processes and mechanisms controlling the extent of inshore retention may be of major significance in regulated rivers with high water velocities, preventing substantial zooplankton growth in the main channel.  相似文献

Anthropogenic habitat alteration interferes the natural aquatic habitats and the system''s hydrodynamics in the Yangtze River floodplain lakes, resulting in a serious decline in freshwater biodiversity. Zooplankton communities possess major position in freshwater ecosystems, which play essential parts in maintaining biological balance of freshwater habitats. Knowledge of processes and mechanisms for affecting variations in abundance, biomass, and diversity of zooplankton is important for maintaining biological balance of freshwater ecosystems. Here, we analyzed that the temporal and spatial changes in the structure of zooplankton community and their temporal and spatial variations respond to changes in environmental factors in the middle reach of Yangtze River floodplain lakes. The results showed that zooplankton samples were classified into 128 species, and Rotifera was the most common taxa. Significant seasonal differences were found among the abundance and diversity of zooplankton. Similarly, we also found significant seasonal differences among the biomass of zooplankton functional groups. The spatial turnover component was the main contributor to the β diversity pattern, which indicated that study areas should establish habitat restoration areas to restore regional biodiversity. The NMDS plot showed that the structure of zooplankton community exhibited significant seasonal changes, where the community structure was correlated with pH, water temperature, water depth, salinity, total nitrogen, chlorophyll‐a, and total phosphorus based on RDA. This study highlights that it is very important to ensure the floodplain ecosystem''s original state of functionality for maintaining the regional diversity of the ecosystem as a whole.  相似文献

Monitoring of algae in Dutch rivers: does it meet its goals?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Observations on phytoplankton in the lower reaches of the rivers Rhine and Meuse were carried out in the framework of the national monitoring programme of the main water systems in The Netherlands. Seasonal changes in density and species composition were analysed to detect the major variables and to discuss whether this monitoring meets its goals. Phytoplankton reached peak densities of 140 and 65 μg L-1 Chl a in the Rhine and Meuse, respectively. Overall density was correlated with seasonal variation in water discharge rather than with nutrient concentrations, that are high in both rivers. The position of sampling sites in relation to the downstream development of the plankton was very important, especially in the regulated Meuse. Despite hydrographic and chemical differences between the two rivers, many species, predominantly diatoms and green algae, were shared. The occurrence of the diatom Skeletonema subsalsum in the Rhine and the green algae Neodesmus danubialis, Micractinium pusillum and Pseudotetrastrum punctatum in the Meuse (1992, but not 1996) was interpreted as a feature related, respectively, to the high salinity of the Rhine and specific riverine conditions of the Meuse. In general the potamoplankton was characterised as an opportunistic assemblage exploiting the high nutrient contents and disturbed hydrography of both rivers. Nevertheless, the phytoplankton contributed to the characterisation of the present river communities, ones that differ rather strongly in historic records. Although year to year variation in phytoplankton density is mainly related to variation in water discharge, phytoplankton biomass did increase as a result of eutrophication over a period of decades. The widespread nature of many of today's potamoplankton species in the two rivers render these organisms less useful for indicating short-term changes in water quality. However the importance of phytoplankton in trophic relationships merits its inclusion in the monitoring of riverine ecosystems. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The spatial variation in zooplankton biomass, abundance andspecies composition in relation to hydrography and chlorophylla (Chl a) was studied in the subarctic waters of Hudson Bayand Hudson Strait. Sampling was carried out in early September1993 at 21 stations arranged along a transect following theQuébec coast from James Bay, in Hudson Bay, to the vicinityof Ungava Bay in Hudson Strait. Both the biomass and the abundanceof total zooplankton were low along the lower part of HudsonBay (averaging 1.6 g DM m–2 and 9432 ind. m–2) andincreased sharply toward the upper end of the Bay and in HudsonStrait (averaging 6.0 g DM m–2 and 40 583 ind. m–2).A total of 80 zooplankton taxa was identified in the samples.Copepods were clearly numerically dominant at all sampling stations, accounting for more than 85% and 93% of the zooplankton communityin the Bay and the Strait, respectively. Clustering samplesby their relative species composition revealed four groups distributedalong well defined environmental gradients characterizing thedistribution of physical variables and Chl a. The first group, located in the most southern region of Hudson Bay and fartheroffshore, northwest of the Belcher and Sleeper Islands, wasstrongly influenced by freshwater run-off from James Bay andother major rivers around the Bay, and was characterized bythe presence of two euryhaline copepod species (Acartia longiremisand Centropages hamatus). The second and the third groups occupiedthe largest region along the sampling transect, from the middleof Hudson Bay to the western region of Hudson Strait, and werecharacterized by a typical arctic zooplankton fauna relatedto the cyclonic circulation in central Hudson Bay. The fourthgroup was located in the easternmost part of the sampling transectin Hudson Strait where the highest phytoplankton biomass valueswere observed (Chl a ~220 mg m–2). The zooplankton assemblagethere showed an important increase in the abundance of the largeherbivorous copepod Calanus glacialis/finmarchicus, which werenumerically four times more abundant in the central Strait region(averaging 15 251 ind. m–2) than in the western side ofHudson Strait and in Hudson Bay (3629 ind. m–2). Theseresults support the hypothesis that the structure in the localbiological community is influenced by the local hydrodynamicfeatures which, through their action on surface water temperature, salinity, stratification and mixing conditions, lead to spatialdifferentiation of the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities.  相似文献

Approaches to compare the strength of pelagic trophic cascades often use singular sampling programs for measuring trophic variables, thus potentially neglecting the spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the distribution of fish, zooplankton and phytoplankton. Here, we compared the composition of six trophic variables from three trophic levels in a deep oligotrophic lake within temporal (diel and seasonal) and spatial (horizontal and vertical) sampling resolutions. Mean values and ratios between the variables were compared between day and night, in three sampling months, four lake basins, and three water depths. Factor analysis was used to determine abiotic variables which may explain the heterogeneous distribution of the trophic variables. All six trophic variables were strongly heterogeneously distributed between the sampling months and the water depths, whereas horizontal and day–night differences were lower. Distribution of fish, zooplankton and phytoplankton correlated with water temperature and nutrient concentrations. Accordingly, for the use in comparative and meta-analyses, singular sampling programs in deep lakes have to integrate the entire water depth and are best repeated over several seasons. Alternatively, mean water temperature and nutrient concentrations may be used as covariates to diminish the unexplained variance between samples from different lakes.  相似文献

In order to assess ecological values of Lower Rhine and Meuse floodplain habitats we studied the spatial and seasonal variation in diversity, species assemblages and feeding traits of caddisfly larvae in water bodies over the lateral connectivity gradient: eupotamon: main and secondary channels; parapotamon: channels connected permanently with the main channel only at their downstream ends; plesiopotamon: disconnected channels close to the main channel; paleopotamon: abandoned meanders at a greater distance from the main channel.Spatial variety was studied by analyzing the summer species composition in 70 Lower Rhine and Meuse water bodies which were categorized in connectivity habitats, whereas seasonal variety was studied in Lower Rhine water bodies along a connectivity gradient by monthly sampling over a whole year. Physico-chemical data and environmental parameters were recorded for each water body during sampling. Diversity and species assemblages of caddisfly larvae varied in relation to connectivity, macrophyte diversity and abundance and stream velocity. A comparison with historical records and species lists from less disturbed rivers showed that diversity in the main channel was very low.Caddisfly larvae species assemblages varied over the connectivity gradient. Lotic habitats (eupotamon) were separated from the lentic ones, and the well vegetated paleopotamon from the sparsely vegetated parapotamon and pleisopotamon habitats, indicating the overall importance of vegetation and current velocity for the species assemblages. Hydropsychidae have been found in the eupotamon exclusively, whereas Limnephilidae, Hydroptilidae and Polycentropodidae have been found predominantly in the paleopotamon water bodies. Leptoceridae were found in all floodplain water body categories. A similar pattern of distribution of families along the lateral connectivity gradient was found in more natural rivers.Caddisfly larvae species feeding traits showed a clear differentiation over the lateral connectivity gradient with filter-feeders and scrapers most important in the eupotamon and parapotamon, and shredders, piercers and predators most dominant in the paleopotamon habitats, indicating the importance of nutritional resources in relation to hydrological connectivity for the structure and functioning of caddisfly larvae species assemblages. The analysis of the species feeding traits allows generalizations towards the entire aquatic community and general prognoses for other floodplain ecosystems.  相似文献
