Radioimmunoassay presented a method of measuring plasma levels of FSH,LH and prolactin in pseudopregnant rats. Plasma prolactin levels doubled 15 minutes following cervical probing (p .01) on the day of estrus. Plasma LH levels were not significantly elevated. Due to the use of ether anesthesia at blood collecting 3 hr before and 15 minutes after stimulation, only 1 of 16 rats developed pseudopregnancy. On Day 4 of pseudopregnancy in rats mated with vasectomized males; plasma LH was lower (p .05) than in normal rats on the first day of diestrus, perhaps due to the suppressive action of ovarian progesterone and some estrogen. FSH was higher than in normal rats (p .05) perhaps due to the lesser sensitivity of FSH to the inhibitory effect of progesterone. Large decidoumata developed by Day 9 in uterine horns traumatized on Day 4 (153 plus or minus 8 mg uterus weight compared to 1510 plus or minus 204 mg). Thus, the corpora remain functional after LH and prolactin are at normal and subnormal levels. On Day 9 plasma prolactin was lower than at Day 1 of diestrus (p .001). Plasma FSH was elevated (p .01). Plasma LH was unchanged. The degree of rise of LH levels 5 days following ovariectomy on Day 4 of psuedopregnancy or on the first day of diestrus was greater in the former group (p .02), perhaps due to rebound of LH from suppression by ovarian steroids. FSH rose equally in both groups. Prolactin remain about the same. Increased prolactin release by the adenohypophysis was briefer than expected.  相似文献

The effects of arginine vasotocin (AVT) on the estrogen-induced surge of LH and FSH were examined in ovariectomized adult rats. Two and one-half weeks after ovariectomy, animals that were treated with a single subcutaneous (s.c.) dose of 5 μg of estradiol benzoate (EB) exhibited a surge of LH and FSH at 1700 and 1900 hours, respectively, two days after the administration of the EB. AVT, antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and oxytocin (OT) were administered s.c. in 1 μg dose every 4 hours beginning at 1500 hours on day 1 after EB treatment and then every 2 hours beginning at 1200 hours on day 2 after EB treatment. AVT completely prevented the LH surge at 1700 hours but was without effect on the FSH surge at 1900 hours on the day 2 after steroid treatment. Neither ADH nor OT had any significant effect on the afternoon surge of these hormones. It is postulated that AVT may interfere with the mechanisms mediating the estrogen-induced afternoon surge of LH in ovariectomized rats.  相似文献

Plasma concentraption changes in luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulation hormone (FSH) following elctrochemical stimulation (ECS) of the medial preoptic area (MPOA) or dorsal anterior hypothalamic area (DAHA) of estrogen-or androgen-sterilized rats were compared with normal proestrous rats in which spontaneous gonadotropin surges had been blocked with Nembutal (control). ECS of control rats, AST, and ESR provoked marked increases in FSH by 120 minutes and peak levels by 180 minutes poststimulation. No differenses were seen when ESR of ASR plasma levels were compared with control values or to each other (ESR vs. ASR). DAHA-ECS did not provoke a marked LH rise in ASR and ESR. MPOA-ECS of control, ASR, and ESR resulted in the release of LH and FSH. FSH peaked in all groups at 240 minutes but at 120 and 180 minutes poststimulation plasma FSH levels were greater in ASR and ESR than controls. FSH in ESR was significantly higher (p. 05) at 120 and 240 minutes poststimulation. LH was elevated in all groups following MPOA-EDS but in ESR markedly greater LH levels were obtained at 60 and 180 minutes compared with controls or ASR. Preoptic stimulation of progesterone-treated ASR (P-ASR) did not induce greater release of FSH than in control, ASR, ESR, or P-ESR. Stimulation of P-ASR resulted in greater plasma LH rise by 60 minutes which was greater than ASR, P-ASR, ESR, or controls, followed by decreased levels to baseline in P-ESR. MPOA-ECS controls ovulated (8-13 eggs) whereas neither ASR nor ESR Fallopian tubes contained eggs the following morning. No DAHA-stimulated groups ovulated. All P-ASR but no P-ESR ovulated after MPOA-ECS. It is concluded that while exposure of neonatal female rats to estrogen renders them more sensitive than ASR to preoptic stimulation, the ovaries of these amimals are much less responsive to the gonadotropin released into plasma than are those of ASR or normal rats.  相似文献

Changes in concentration of serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) associated with estrogen-advanced ovulation in 4-day cyclic rats were determined. 50 mcg of estradiol benzoate was administered sc on the 1st day of diestrus and LH and FSH were determined by radioimmunoassay 24, 29, and 47 hours postinjection. 48 hours postinjection, ovulation was determined by the presence of ova in the oviduct. Estradiol benzoate caused a significant (p less than .01) increase in serum LH after 24 and 29 hours and a drastic decrease after 47 hours postinjection. FSH increased (p less than .05) after 29 hours postinjection. These results suggest that an ovulatory gonadotropin surge occurs 24 hours ahead of schedule in estradiol-benzoate-treated rats.  相似文献

A detailed analysis was made of circulating luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and prolactin throughout the estrous cycle in rats. Vaginal cytology was recorded daily for 18 or 23 days in 2 groups of adult female rats, 300 and 400 per group. The presence of distended uteri or tubal ova was noted at the time of exsanguination under ether anesthesia. Serum concentrations of LH, FSH, and prolactin were determined by radioimmunoassay. In 404 rats with regular 5-day cycles, all 3 hormones reached maximum concentrations on the afternoon of functional proestrus. During the next 3 days FSH decreased progressively, and LH levels indicated a diurnal fluctuation with minimum concentrations during darkness. Serum prolactin may have b een elevated due to anesthesia and exsanguination and showed a rapid increase which occurred simultaneously with elevated LH and FSH on the afternoon of proestrus. Radioimmunoassay of all 3 hormones indicated that the increases in serum LH and prolactin did not necessarily occur simultaneously. Hypophysectomy and sequential heart puncture of proestrus rats during maximum hormone release showed disappearance rates (half-lives) for LH, FSH, and prolactin of 20, 110, and 13 minutes, respectively.  相似文献

The purpose of these experiments was to determine whether bilateral vasoligation of adult male rats had any short-term effects upon plasma levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and prolactin. Adult male rats (250-300 g) were either bilaterally vasoligated or sham vasoligated, and blood samples were obtained by cardiac puncture preoperatively and at 24 h and 7 days following surgery. Plasma levels of both FSH and LH were significantly (P less than 0.01) decreased at 24 h following vasoligation compared to preoperative levels and those of sham-operated controls. However, the response was differential since, at 7 days following vasoligation, plasma FSH was still significantly decreased while LH was returning to control levels. Conversely, plasma prolactin levels were significantly (P less than 0.01) increased at 24 h compared to preoperative values and those in sham-operated controls, and at 7 days prolactin had returned to preoperative control levels. Sham vasoligation did not significantly change plasma levels of FSH, LH, or prolactin at any of the time intervals investigated. These results provide further evidence that suggests that there may be a direct connection between the testis and central nervous system that may be involved in the short-term regulation of gonadotropin and prolactin secretion.  相似文献

The effects of cocaine on ovulation and corpus luteum function were investigated in New Zealand White rabbits. Forty females were randomly assigned to control and cocaine-treated groups. Controls were given vehicle s.c. daily for 5 days and cocaine-treated rabbits received 40 mg/kg cocaine hydrochloride s.c. daily for 5 days. One hour after the last cocaine dose, half the control and half of the cocaine-treated groups were mated with fertile males and the other half of each group received hCG i.v. Serial blood samples were obtained over 4 h on the day of mating or hCG treatment (Day 0), and then at intervals from Days 1-18. No mated, cocaine-treated rabbits ovulated, vs. 6 of 10 controls (chi-square: p = 0.01). In contrast, all animals given hCG had comparable numbers of corpora lutea (control: 7.1 +/- 0.8; cocaine: 5.7 +/- 0.8). Peak levels of benzoylecgonine (the major cocaine metabolite) occurred between 180 and 240 min after cocaine administration. In cocaine-treated animals that were mated, Day 0 serum LH (repeated measures MANOVA, p less than 0.01) and FSH (p less than 0.03) concentrations were lower than those in pregnant controls. Serum LH and FSH levels for all hCG recipients (cocaine-treated and control) did not differ. A total of 120 male rats of the Sprague-Dawley-strain (6 weeks old) were used in this experiment. 5 groups of 12 animals each were treated intraperitoneally with 200 ng gonadotropin releasing hormone (LH-RH) per animal. 30 minutes later blood was sampled by heart puncture. Group I were animals without transport, group II immediately after, group III one day, group IV one week and group V six weeks after a standardised transport. Another 5 groups were subjected to the same protocol but received saline i.p. instead of LH-RH. Serum levels of LH and FSH were estimated by radioimmunoassay. LH and FSH serum levels could be stimulated by LH-RH in all groups. A significant rise of basal and LH-RH stimulated LH levels was observed until the first day after transport. Thereafter a drop was registered. No consistent patterns of basal as well LH-RH stimulated FSH-levels were noted. These data combine to suggest an elevation of LH-RH secretion as response to the stress. This results in a sensibilisation of the pituitary to exogenous LH-RH.  相似文献

To more completely assess the means by which alcohol impairs the female reproductive cycle in rats, we have measured hypothalamic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), pituitary LHRH receptor content, and the serum levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (Prl), and progesterone (P). After two successive cycles, the animals began receiving either an alcohol or a isocaloric control liquid diet regimen beginning on the first day of diestrus, with continued monitoring of the estrous cycle throughout the experiment. An additional set of controls consisted of animals maintained on lab chow and water provided ad libitum. Our results indicate that those animals receiving the control diets showed uninterrupted estrous patterns, whereas those animals receiving the alcohol diet remained in diestrus. Additionally, the alcohol-treated animals showed an increase (p less than 0.05) in LHRH content, with a concomitant decrease (p less than 0.01) in serum LH, and an increase (p less than 0.01) in serum Prl. No significant differences were detected in serum FSH levels or pituitary LHRH receptor content. No differences were detected in serum P levels. These results indicate that short-term alcohol administration disrupts the female reproductive cycle, causing persistent diestrus, and support our hypothesis that the alcohol-induced depression in serum LH levels is due to a diminished release rate of hypothalamic LHRH.  相似文献

Adult male transgenic mice expressing the human growth hormone (hGH) gene are hypoprolactinemic. To evaluate the effects of exogenous prolactin (PRL) and endogenously secreted hGH on pituitary and Leydig cell function, adult male transgenic and nontransgenic mice (10-16 wk of age) were treated s.c. with either saline-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) or oPRL (100 micrograms/mouse) in saline-PVP. Animals were treated twice daily; a total of 7 injections were given. One hour after the last injection, each group of mice was treated i.p. either with saline or oLH (0.3 microgram/g BW); 2 h later, blood was obtained via heart puncture. Plasma FSH, LH, PRL, androstenedione (A-dione), and testosterone (T) levels were measured by validated RIAs. Basal PRL levels were significantly lower (p less than 0.001) and basal LH concentrations were significantly higher (p less than 0.01) in transgenic than in nontransgenic mice. Administration of PRL significantly decreased (p less than 0.01) plasma LH levels in transgenic mice, whereas similar treatment of nontransgenic mice increased (p less than 0.01) circulating LH concentrations. Plasma FSH levels were unaffected in transgenic and nontransgenic mice treated with saline or PRL. Basal plasma A-dione and T levels were similar in both groups of animals and were significantly increased after treatment with LH. Administration of PRL increased T levels in transgenic and nontransgenic mice, but the T response to LH treatment was greater in PRL-treated transgenic mice, indicating the synergistic effect of hGH in the biosynthesis of T.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effect of the main psychoactive component of marihuana, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was investigated on the onset of puberty and on the reproductive function in female rats up to the seventy-fifth to eightieth day of life. The drug was administered i.p. at a dose of 1 microgram/kg/day between the twenty-second postnatal day and the day of vaginal opening (V.O.). The administration of THC caused a 2-day delay in V. O., and the number of ova on the day of first estrus was significantly lower in treated rats than in controls. No differences were observed in serum gonadotropin and prolactin (PRL) levels on the day of V. O. After puberty, alterations occurred in the neuroendocrine functions of animals receiving THC that persisted until adulthood: estrous cycles were irregular, the number of ova in animals killed 35-40 days after V. O. was reduced, and serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels were decreased (diminution of serum FSH content was less expressed). An increase in serum PRL concentration could be demonstrated only in animals killed on the day of estrus. From these results, it might be concluded that THC administered to prepubertal rats--even in a very low dose--causes long-term irreversible alterations in reproductive functions. Inoculation of cyclic female rats with the prolactin (Prl)/growth hormone-secreting pituitary tumor, MtT.W15, resulted in a cessation of estrous cyclicity within 5--10 days. Associated with this acyclicity was a persistently low serum concentration of estradiol and marked increases in both circulating Prl and progesterone. At Day 26 of acyclicity, basal serum luteinizing hormone (LH) values measured in samples taken every 20 min from 0900--1100 h were significantly reduced when compared to cyclic, nontumor animals on diestrus Day 2. There was no difference in basal follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations. In a separate group of acyclic, tumor-bearing females 42--56 days after transplantation, a single s.c. injection of 20 micrograms estradiol benzoate (EB) at 1030 h elicited significant increases in both serum LH and FSH values between 1700 and 1830 h on the next day. The magnitude of the LH surge was reduced and that of FSH was increased in tumor-bearing animals when compared to cyclic, nontumor females given a similar EB injection on diestrus Day 1. These results demonstrate that chronic hyperprolactinemia is associated with inhibition of basal LH secretion and ovarian estrogen production and an increase in circulating progesterone concentrations. Nevertheless, the stimulatory feedback effects of estrogen on LH and FSH release are still present and functioning in acyclic female rats under chronically hyperprolactinemic conditions. These data suggest that the cessation of regular ovulatory cycles associated with hyperprolactinemia may be due to a deficiency of LH and/or estrogen secretion, but not to a lack of central nervous system response to the stimulatory feedback action of estrogen.  相似文献

Experiments were designed to determine why copulation in the pregnant rabbit does not terminate pregnancy while treatment with ovulatory doses of luteinizing hormone (LH) human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) is known to do so. Pregnant rabbits (Day 8) were mated or were injected with hCG (25 IU/doe) or LHRH (1, 10 micrograms/kg). Serial blood samples were collected over the next 72 h and analyzed for content of LH, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and progesterone. At sacrifice, uteri and ovaries from these animals were examined for viability of the embryos and for signs of recent ovulation. Injection of hCG or LHRH into pregnant animals led to ovulation and to patterns of LH, FSH and progesterone secretion like those which precede ovulation in estrous rabbits. However, mating the pregnant does did not lead to ovulation or to any changes in the circulating hormones. To investigate whether the elevated levels of progesterone during pregnancy were responsible for the dissociation of coitus from ovulation, nonpregnant rabbits were injected with progesterone (2 mg/kg) and then mated or injected with hCG or LHRH. In virtually every respect, the numbers of ovulations and the patterns of hormone secretion in the progesterone-treated, nonpregnant rabbits mimicked those observed in the 8-day pregnant animals; injection of hCG or LHRH caused ovulation and hormonal surges while hCG caused ovulation only. Mating did not lead to ovulation or any change in blood levels of LH, FSH or progesterone. Taken together, the results show that the elevated circulating levels of progesterone, characteristic of pregnancy, are probably responsible for the dissociation of copulation from gonadotropin release in pregnant rabbits.  相似文献

Environmental exposure to toxic levels of lead occurs in a number of industries with potential adverse effects on the reproductive capacity of exposed men. Using a rat model, we previously reported that dietary exposure to lead resulted in suppressed spermatogenesis and testosterone levels without significant changes in luteinizing hormone (LH). In this study, to identify more specifically the site of lead's toxic actions on the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis, the response of lead-treated male rats as compared to control animals to naloxone, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), and LH stimulation was studied. Three groups of 52-day-old Wistar rats were allowed access to either deionized distilled water containing no lead acetate or a 0.3% lead acetate solution for 30 days. In each study group, 10 control and 10 lead-treated animals were anesthetized prior to cardiac puncture and collection of serum for the measurement of lead level and baseline LH (Groups I and II) or testosterone levels (Group III). In Group I, 20 min after an i.p. injection of naloxone (1.5 mg/kg/BW), the animals were killed by decapitation, and serum was collected for LH measurement. Thirty minutes after an i.p. injection of GnRH (100 ng/100 gm BW), Group II animals were killed by decapitation, and serum was collected for LH. Sixty minutes after an injection of LH (100 mg/100 mg BW), serum was collected from Group III animals for testosterone measurement. All control animals and lead-treated animals consumed similar volumes of water. Control animals had undetectable levels of lead in their blood. Previous work has indicated that in long-term ovariectomized rats a potent antagonist to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) suppressed serum luteinizing hormone (LH) more successfully than follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). The present studies examined whether the rise in serum FSH which occurs acutely after ovariectomy, or during the proestrous secondary surge, depends on GnRH. In Experiment A, rats were ovariectomized at 0800 h of metestrus and injected with (Ac-dehydro-Pro1, pCl-D-Phe2, D-Trp3,6, NaMeLeu7)-GnRH (Antag-I) at 1200 h of the same day, or 2 or 5 days later. Antag-I blocked the LH response completely, but only partially suppressed serum FSH levels. Experiment B tested a higher dose of a more potent antagonist [( Ac-3-Pro1, pF-D-Phe2, D-Trp3,6]-GnRH; Antag-II) injected at the time of ovariectomy. The analog suppressed serum LH by 79% and FSH by 30%. Experiment C examined the effect of Antag-II on the day of proestrus on the spontaneous secondary surge of FSH, as well as on a secondary FSH surge which can be induced by exogenous LH. Antag-II, given at 1200 h proestrus, blocked ovulation and the LH surge expected at 1830 h, as well as increases in serum FSH which occur at 1830 h and at 0400 h. Exogenous LH triggered a rise in FSH in rats suppressed by Antag-II. In Experiment D proestrous rats were injected with Antag-II at 1200 h and ovariectomized at 1530 h. The 4-5-mo hibernation season of golden-mantled ground squirrels consists of extended torpor bouts interspersed with brief, periodic intervals of normothermic arousal. Plasma levels of testosterone (T), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and degree of scrotal pigmentation were measured in torpid and aroused male ground squirrels throughout a season of hibernation and in active animals after the termination of torpor. T was basal in torpid animals; beginning 3 weeks before torpor ended, T was elevated in normothermic males during the first half of periodic arousals but returned to basal levels before animals reentered torpor. After the last (terminal) arousal from torpor, T levels were moderately elevated for 4 wk and maximal for the next 6 wk before they returned to basal values. LH patterns were similar to those of T; however, levels of T and LH were positively correlated only in aroused or posthibernation males. FSH levels remained constant and low during most of the heterothermic season but increased in several torpid males within 3 days of terminal arousal. FSH levels peaked 2 wk after the end of heterothermy. Scrotal pigmentation developed over the first 4 wk after terminal arousal. Maturation of reproductive function occurs during the 4 wk after termination of heterothermy, but elevated levels of T during arousals and variable levels of FSH in the last days of torpor suggest that activation or increased sensitivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis is important in the termination of heterothermy in ground squirrels.  相似文献

Commercially available radioimmunoassay (RIA) kits for human follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) were adapted for quantitation of these hormones in serum from bottlenosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Serum samples from over 160 wild and 70 captive animals were assayed in order to determine basal concentrations of FSH and LH in these animals, as well as to detect possible differences between various groups. Mean FSH and LH levels for all animals were 0.22 +/- 0.08 and 0.37 +/- 0.18 ng/ml, respectively. Although wild animals had higher FSH and LH levels than captive ones, the differences were not statistically significant (P less than 0.07). However, both FSH and LH were significantly (P less than 0.01 and P less than 0.05, respectively) elevated in females when compared to males. Adults and peripubescent animals had significantly (P less than 0.01) higher LH levels than did juveniles. Among wild animals, serum concentrations of FSH and LH reflected seasonal differences. Samples obtained in early summer (Gulf of Mexico population) contained significantly (P less than 0.01) higher concentrations of FSH and LH than samples obtained in the fall (Indian River, Florida population). Both FSH and LH were significantly elevated in samples from confirmed pregnant animals as compared to the overall mean and to a sample from a confirmed nonpregnant female. Our observations indicate that these RIAs can reliably detect serum FSH and LH from bottlenosed dolphins and represent the first quantitation of these hormones in cetaceans.  相似文献

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) was used to evaluate the importance of the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus in the expression of daily gonadotropin rhythms in female golden hamsters. These daily rhythms of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which also occur in prepubertal females, are characterized by afternoon surges. Neonatal administration of MSG induces degeneration of perikarya in the arcuate nucleus and renders females permanently anovulatory. MSG was injected at 8 days of age; at 21 days, the animals were weaned and sorted by sex into groups of 5-7. Blood samples were obtained at 1300 and 1700 h at 25, 30, 35, 40, 50, 62, and 192 days of age from MSG-sterilized animals. Saline-injected controls were bled at 25 days and after estrous cycles had been initiated (29-37 days of age). In both control and MSG-injected groups, there was an afternoon surge of LH and FSH at 25 days of age. These daily surges persisted in MSG-injected animals. The ovaries of these animals were characterized by an abundant interstitium and arrested follicular development. Progesterone levels of MSG-anovulatory animals also reflected the rhythmicity of LH and FSH, with a significant increase occurring between 1300 and 1700 h. Thus, MSG did not affect the daily circadian-based rhythmicity in gonadotropin secretion even though adult-age animals were infertile. These results suggest that perikarya of the arcuate nucleus affected by MSG are not required for generation of daily LH and FSH rhythms.  相似文献

The influence of low (5 mcM) and high (200 mcM) concentrations of indomethacin on gonadotropin release from rat pituitaries was studied in vitro. Low concentrations significantly (p less than .05) reduced the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) in comparison with controls, whereas high concentrations significantly (p less than .05) increased the rate of release. The release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) was not affected. When pituitary tissue was stimulated by LH-releasing hormone (LH-RH), the high concentration of indomethacin significantly (p less than .05) increased LH release and produced a nearly significant (p less than .01) increase in FSH. The low concentration was without effect. The effect of the addition of prostaglandins (PGs) alone and in combination with indomethacin was also investigated. PGE-1 significantly (p less than .05) increased the release of LH. However, there was no significant (p greater than .1) interaction between the 2 drugs. The effects on the release of FSH were similar. The addition of PGE-2 or PGF-2alpha slightly increased the release of LH and FSH (p greater than .1). Male rats were either unilaterally or bilaterally castrated, or were rendered cryptorchid when they were either 15 or 45 days old. Subsequently, blood was sampled over the next several weeks and plasma luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone (T), and immunoreactive inhibin-alpha (irI alpha) levels were measured by specific radioimmunoassays (RIAs). At the end of the experiment, gonadal expression of inhibin-alpha, inhibin-beta A, and inhibin-beta B subunits was measured by S1 nuclease analysis and in situ hybridization. In both age groups, bilateral castration (BC) produced the expected marked (p less than or equal to 0.01) increases in plasma LH and FSH levels, and concomitant decreases in T and irI alpha secretion within 1 - 2 days after surgery. In 15-day-old animals, unilateral castration (UC) significantly increased FSH and decreased circulating levels of irI alpha, but did not measurably alter LH or androgen production. At 7 days after surgery, the level of inhibin mRNA in the remaining testis was unchanged. In 45-day-old animals, UC caused a measurable increase in FSH, with little or no changes in the circulating levels of irI alpha. Plasma T levels were lowered (p less than or equal to 0.05) by UC; however, there were no statistical changes in LH levels in these UC rats. Finally, T administration markedly reversed UC-induced increase in FSH secretion in both age groups. Androgen therapy also interfered with inhibin release in 45-day-old, but not in 15-day-old rats. In rats 15 days old at the time of surgery, cryptorchidism produced a small but measurable increase (p less than or equal to 0.05) in LH release at Week 6 only, which was accompanied by a significant (p less than or equal to 0.01) decline in T secretion. Plasma FSH levels were elevated at all times in cryptorchid rats, and at 2, 4, and 6 wk, these levels were not statistically distinguishable (p greater than 0.05) from those of castrated animals. In this group of rats, cryptorchidism caused a transient increase (p less than or equal to 0.05) in irI alpha values 1 wk after surgery, but no changes at later times. Finally, measurement of testicular inhibin-alpha subunit messenger RNA (mRNA) levels showed an approximately 2-fold increase compared to total RNA levels in the testis. However, because of the significant decrease in total RNA levels per testis caused by cryptorchidism, the absolute change in inhibin-alpha subunit mRNA levels per testis corresponded to an approximately 3-fold decrease.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献
