An account is given of Doto, Armina and Madrella species collectedon diving and dredging expeditions to the Ligurian, Tyrrhenian,Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean Seas during the period 1973–1988,supplemented by material collected around Naples (southern Italy)and Banyuls (French Côte Vermeille). In all, 5 speciesof Doto, 3 of Armina and 1 of Madrella were investigated, yielding5 new records for the eastern Mediterranean Sea and one speciesnew to science, Armina tricuspidata from the Tyrrhenian Sea.The common arminid on the American coast from North Carolinato Texas is not A. tigrina as claimed by Abbott(1954) and byEyster (1981), but is a new species, for which we propose thename Armina abbotti. Consideration of world-wide records of Madrella leads to theconclusion that the senior Madrella sanguinea Angas, 1864, embracesM. ferruginosa Alder & Hancock, 1864, M. aurantiace Vayssière,1903 and M. granularis Baba, 1949 (but not the Japanese M. gloriosaBaba, 1949, which is probably distinct). *T.E. Using multivariate statistics we have examined spatio-temporalpatterns in the distribution of siphonophore assemblages alongthe east coast of South Africa, anticipating constancy in cross-shelfand alongshore structure that would mirror the hydrographicstability. Indeed, while the surface temperature of the AgulhasCurrent does vary on a seasonal basis, the position of its coreis thought to have a stable trajectory year round, and its otherphysical and chemical characteristics are considered to be relativelyaseasonal. Two clear aseasonal assemblages were observed, associatedeither with the nearshore waters in the extreme SW (Port Alfredupwelling cell), or with the Agulhas Current and inshore watersnorth of East London. Assemblages in the current-driven upwellingcell were characterized by low overall diversity and dense populationsof Muggiaea atlantica (up to 28 000 ind. 1000 m–3). Assemblageselsewhere in the region were dominated by Abylopsis eschscholtzi,A. tetragona, Bassia bassensis, Chelophyes contorta, Diphyesdispar, D. bojani, Eudoxoides spiralis, E. mitra, Lensia subtiloidesand Sulculeolaria chuni. There is some evidence of both an alongshoreand a cross-shelf pattern in the distribution of assemblagesnorth of East London, but this is subordinate to a strongerseasonal signal. The impact of seasonality on regional assemblagesis hypothesized to be reflected in significant changes in theupstream structure of Agulhas Current assemblages.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were carried out on the holoplanktonicscyphomedusa Pelagia noctiluca, which exhibits population explosionssome years in the Mediterranean Sea. Feeding experiments performedon small, laboratory-reared medusae showed specific daily rationsof 13 and 35% at 5 and 20 Anemia nauplii prey 1–1 respectively,while basal NH+4 excretion reached 3.9% (specific elementalmetabolic rate) for adults at 22°C. These values appearto be consistent with those previously observed by several authorsfor other planktonic coelenterates. Assuming that such laboratoryphysiological rates are indicative of food requirements in naturalenvironments, and given the high abundance of P. noctiluca observedregionally, we conclude that P. noctiluca can have a strongpredatory impact in the Ligurian Sea (north-west Mediterranean),particularly during the summer and early fall. 3Present address: ORSTOM B.P. 2528, Bamako, Mali  相似文献

The total number of planktonic bacteria in the upper mixed layerof the Bering Sea during the late spring-early summer periodranged between 1 and {small tilde}4 x 106 ml–1 (biomass10–40mg C m–3). In the northern Pacific, along 47–526N,the corresponding characteristics of the bacterioplankton densityin the upper mixed water layer were: total number 1–2x 106 cells ml–1 and biomass 15–46mg C m–3Below the thermocline at 50–100 m, the density of bacterioplanktonrapidly decreased. At 300 m depth, it stabilized at 0.1–0.2x 106 cells ml–1. The integrated biomass of bacterioplanktonin the open Bering Sea ranged between 1.2 and 3.6 g C m–2(wet biomass 6–18 g m–2) Its production per dayvaried from 2 to 23 mg C m–3 days–1 in the upper0–100 m. The numerical abundance of planktonic ciliatesin this layer was estimated to be from 3 to l0 x 103 cells l–1,and in the northern Pacific from 0.4 to 4.5 x 103 l–2.Their populations were dominated by naked forms of Strombidium,Strombilidium and Tontonia. In some shelf areas, up to 40% ofthe total ciliate population was represented by the symbioticciliate Mesodinium rubrum. The data on the integrated biomassof basic groups of planktonic microheterotrophs are also presented,and their importance in the trophic relationships in pelagiccommunities of subarctic seas is discussed.  相似文献

The occurrence and abundance of the toxic, chain-forming dinoflagellateGymnodinium catenatum in a Tyrrhenian coastal lagoon, the Fusaro,during an annual sampling cycle are reported. Peak abundanceswere observed from late spring until early autumn Although veryhigh cell numbers were recorded, up to 1 5 x 106 cells l–1,no monospecific bloom of this species occurred. The first observationof G.catenatum in the Mediterranean occurred in the Fusaro andthe appearance of this species in a traditional shellfish farmingarea, where no shellfish intoxication has been reported to date,is discussed in relation to human interventions in the basin.In particular, intensive dredging in recent years with resuspensionof bottom sediments may have seeded the water body with cysts.A Gymnodinium n d species, illustrated using scanning electronmicroscopy, caused a monospecific bloom in concomitance withmaximum abundances of G.catenatum, apparently outcompeting thislatter species  相似文献

The structure of the zooplankton biotic community and of copepodpopulation in the coastal area of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea,Antarctica) was investigated during the 10th Italian AntarcticExpedition (1994/1995). Zooplankton biotic community consistedmainly of pteropods (Limacina helicina and Clione antarctica),Cyclopoid (Oithona similis), Poecilostomatoid (Oncaea curvata)and Calanoid (Ctenocalanus vanus, Paraeuchaeta antarctica, Metridiagerlachei and Stephos longipes) copepods, ostracods, larvalpolychaetes and larval euphausiids. Zooplankton abundance rangedfrom 48.1 ind m–3 to 5968.9 ind m–3, and copepodabundance ranged from 45.2 ind m–3 to 3965.3 ind m–3.The highest peak of zooplankton abundance was observed between25 m and the surface and was mainly due to the contributionof O. similis, O. curvata and C. vanus. Zooplankton biomassranged from 5.28 mg m–3 to 13.04 mg m–3 dry weight;the maximum value was observed between 25 m and the surface.Total lipid content varied from 216.44 to 460.73 mg g–1dry weight.  相似文献

The abundance and biomass of the large heterotrophic dinoflagellateNoctiluca scintillans, together with the changes in its potentialprey items, were monitored in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, duringsummer 1997 (17 July-11 August). Growth and grazing rates ofNscintillans fed natural plankton populations were also measuredeight and seven times, respectively, during the survey period.The abundance and biomass of N scintillans averaged over thewater column (19 m) were in the range 1–345 cells 1–1(temporalaverage = 93 cell1–1) and 0.1–49.6 µg C l–1(temporalaverage = 13.8 µg C l–1; three times higher thanthat of calanoid copepods during the same period). Noctilucascintillans populations followed the changes in phytoplankton:N.scintillans biomass was increasing during the period of diatomblooms and was at a plateau or decreasing during periods oflow chlorophyll a. The growth rates of N.scintillans (µ)were also consistent with the wax and wane of the N.scintillanspopulation: N.scintillans showed highest growth rates duringdiatom blooms. A simple relationship between µ and chlorophylla concentration was established, and the production of N.scintillanswas estimated using this relationship and the measured biomass.The estimated production averaged over the water column wasin the range >0.1–5.2 µg C l–1 day–1(temporalaverage = 1.4 µg C l–1 day–1; 64% of the productionof calanoid copepods during the same period). Diatom clearancerates by N.scintillans were in the range 0.10–0.35 mlcell–1 day–1, and the phytoplankton population clearanceby N.scintillans was >12% day–1. Thus, although thefeeding pressure of N.scintillans on phytoplankton standingstock was low, N.scintillans was an important member of themesozooplank-ton in terms of biomass and production in the SetoInland Sea during summer.  相似文献

Findings from experiments showed that the web-feeding euthecosomatouspteropod, Limacina retroversa, can produce rapidly sinking,mucous aggregates. It is suggested that, by adhesion, theseaggregates scavenged picoplankton-sized particles, which werethus effectively cleared from the medium. In contrast, Calanusfinmarchicus was not able to clear these particles in our experiments.Sedimentation velocities of 10 aggregates measured in vivo wereup to 1000 m day–1, with an average of {small tilde}300m day–1 (not including two aggegates with neutral buoyancy).Mean velocities measured for feces of C.finmarchicus, Calanushyperboreus and Thyssnoessa sp. were consider ably lower. Wesuggest that the sedimentation of L retroversa aggregates wasthe source of mucous flocs collected in sediment traps (Bathmannet al., Deep-Sea Res., 38,1341–1360,1991) and at the seafloor at 1200 m depth in the southern Norwegian Sea. This processmay be an important mediator of sedimentation to the deep sea,when these pteropods are present in surface waters in largeabundance.  相似文献

To assess the role of viruses in the bloom dynamics of Micromonaspusilla in the Gulf of Naples (Mediterranean Sea), variationsof host and virus abundance were followed over one annual cycleand in late winter–spring of three consecutive years.Micromonas pusilla was recorded from autumn to spring, withpeak values up to 6.6 x 103 cells ml–1, but was undetectablein summer. Free M.pusilla viruses were detectable in all seasons,with concentrations from 0.02 viruses ml–1 to 1.9 x 103viruses ml–1, exceeding host abundances only in one case.We found a great intraspecific variability in host susceptibilityto viruses present in natural samples, with viral titres rangingover one or two orders of magnitude for the same samples incubatedon different M.pusilla strains. Over the winter–springperiods, a highly dynamic situation was evident, with wide fluctuationsfor both host and virus abundances from one week to another.In some cases, peak host concentrations were accompanied byan increase in viral numbers, whereas in other cases the respectivefluctuations were uncoupled. Although fluctuations of M.pusillaabundance could be influenced by viral infection, there wasno evidence that viruses were able to terminate host blooms.The summer decline of M.pusilla populations did not appear tobe related to the impact of viral infection.  相似文献

Primary production, pigment concentrations and spectral measurementsof downwelling irradiance were made at four stations in fourseasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter) during 1994 in thewaters of the South Aegean Sea (Cretan Sea), Eastern Mediterranean.Rates of production were determined using in Situ incubationtechniques and included measurements at the surface microlayer.Depth-integrated values averaged over season were 5.66 mg Cm–2 h–1 for primary production and the correspondingchlorophyll (Ch1) a and phaeophytin (Phaeo) a values had meansof 4.87 and 1.21 mg m–3 respectively. The assimilationratio remained very low (mean over season: 1.19 mg C mg–2Chl a h–1 as did the Phaeo a/Chl a ratio (mean over season:0.24). The annual production for the area was estimated to yield24.79 g C m–2 year–1. Primary production and Chla estimates showed statistically significant seasonal, spatialand depth variations. The temporal variability of siphonophores was compared on night-to-night,month-to-month and year-to-year scales in open-net collectionsmade at or near the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series (BATS) site.These collections were made as oblique tows to 100 m on (i)one summer night in each of 1986, 1989 and 1991, (ii) one nightper month on 13 cruises between April 1991 and August 1992,and (iii) three consecutive summer nights of 1992. The meanwet displacement volume (WDV) of sipho nophores in the thesecollections was 1.4 ± 0.6 ml per 100 m3 or 20 ±10% of the total catch biovolume. The most common species belongedto the Calycophorae families Diphyidae and Abylidae: the combinednumerical abundance of Chelophyes appendiculala, Eudoxoidesmitra, Lensia subtilis. Eudox-oides spiralis, Bassia bassensisand Abytopsis eschscholtzi averaged 300–400 per 100 m3.Combined numbers of these common species varied little whensampled hour by hour at the same location during consecutivesummer nights or at different night-time sampling locations101–102 km apart when these were sampled within 3–5h. In contrast, most of these six species exhibited 2- to 3-folddifferences in night-time abundance between summers of differentyears and between seasons. Three seasonal groups were detected,with a winter group being the most distinct from the others.Changes in the abundance of several species were correlatedwith seasonal changes in the depth of the mixed layer.  相似文献

Annual variations of egg production rate (EPR) and clutch sizeof Calanus sinicus, as well as body size of females (prosomelength and dry weight), were investigated at a series of stationsin the Southern Yellow Sea by onboard incubation. Calanus sinicuswas spawning in all the 11 cruises investigated, and the annualvariation of EPR was bimodal. Monthly average EPR was highestfrom May to July, respectively, 5.97, 5.36 and 6.30 eggs female–1d–1, then decreased dramatically to only 1.37 eggs female–1d–1 in August and attained the lowest 1.07 eggs female–1d–1 in October. In November, average EPR increased againto 4.31 eggs female–1 d–1. Seasonal variation ofclutch size was similar to EPR, except that it decreased graduallyafter August rather than dramatically as did EPR. Prosome lengthof females was maximum in May and minimum in October, but dryweight was highest in November. Monthly average EPR correlatedbetter with prosome length than dry weight, while clutch sizewas rather determined by dry weight of females. It is suggestedthat egg production of C. sinicus was active during two discontinuousperiods when both surface and bottom temperature fell into itsfavorite range (i.e. 10–23°C), and different reproductivestrategies were adopted in these two reproductive peaks: otherthan the highest EPR, longer prosome length was also achievedby C. sinicus from May to July, while females in November developedshorter bodies but accumulated more energy for reproduction.  相似文献

The carbon and nitrogen content of Noctiluca scintillans cellsfrom the Seto Inland Sea, Japan was investigated in order toestimate its biomass in natural samples. The carbon contentof N.scintillans ranged from 123 to 627 ng C cell–1 witha mean value of 353 ng C cell–1, or 1.12 to 2.67 fg Cµm–3 with a mean value of 1.98 fg C µm–3.The nitrogen content ranged from 36.0 to 232 ng N cell–1with a mean value of 131 ng N cell–1, or 0.499 to 0.910fg N µm–3 with a mean value of 0.694 fg N µm–3.Total cell carbon and nitrogen increased but the carbon andnitrogen per cell volume decreased with increasing cell volume.The C/N ratio of the cells ranged from 2.3 to 4.4, which wasrelatively low compared with the Redfield ratio. The carbonand nitrogen content was extremely low (91.2 ng C cell–1,41.8 ng N cell–1) for starved cells, whereas it was extremelyhigh (528 ng C cell–1, 205 ng N cell–1) for cellswhich had ingested the large diatom, Coscinodiscus wailesii.Our results suggest that the carbon and nitrogen content ofN.scintillans varies depending on its physiological conditionand the type of food that it has recently consumed.  相似文献

Length-biomass regressions were established for the cladoceranBosmina longispina maritima and for the copepods Euryremoraaffinis hirundoides and Limnocalanus macrurus, all common inthe Baltic Sea. Biomass was analysed as individual organic carboncontent. For Bosmina, length was a weak estimator of biomass;only 51% of the variation in carbon content was explained bylength. For pre-adult stages of copepods length was a rathergood estimator of biomass. For Euryremora nauplii. the length-carbonrelationship was best described by linear equations (r2 wasbetween 0.49 and 0.69), and for copepodite stages (CI-V) byexponential functions (r2 = 0.81). The regressions for two differentsampling areas (Baltic proper and Bothnian Bay) did not showstatistically significant differences. Among the copepodites(CI-V) of Limnocalanus there was a linear relationship betweenlength and carbon content (r2 = 0.76). In both copepod speciesthere was no or a weak correlation between length and biomassamong adults.  相似文献

Planktonic primary production in the German Wadden Sea   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
By combining weekly data of irradiance, attenuation and chlorophylla concentrations with photosynthesis (P) versus light intensity(E) curve characteristics, the annual cycle of planktonic primaryproduction in the estuarine part of the Northfrisian WaddenSea was computed for a 2 year period. Daily water column particulategross production ranged from 5 to 2200 mg C m–2 day–1and showed a seasonal pattern similar to chlorophyll a. Budgetcalculation yielded annual gross particulate primary productionsof 124 and 176 g C m–2 year–1 in 1995 and 1996,respectively. Annual amounts of phytoplankton respiration, calculatedaccording to a two-compartment model of Langdon [in Li,W.K.W.and Maestrini,S.Y. (eds), Measurement of Primary Productionfrom the Molecular to the Global Scale. International Councilfor the Exploration of the Sea, Copenhagen, 1993, pp. 20–36],and dissolved production in 1996, were both in the range of24–39 g C m–2 year–1. Annual total net productionwas thus very similar to particulate gross production (127 and177 g C m–2 year–1 in 1995 and 1996, respectively).Phytoplankton growth was low or even negative in winter. Inspring and summer, production/biomass (Pr/B) ratios varied from0.2 up to 1.7. Phytoplankton growth during the growth seasonalways surpassed average flushing time in the area, thus underliningthe potential of local phytoplankton bloom development in thispart of the Wadden Sea. The chlorophyll-specific maximum photosyntheticrate (PBmax) ranged from 0.8 to 9.9 mg C mg–1 Chl h–1and was strongly correlated with water temperature (r2 = 0.67).By contrast, there was no clear seasonal cycle in B, which rangedfrom 0.007 to 0.039 mg C mg–1 Chl h–1 (µmolphotons m–2 s–1)–1. Its variability was muchless than PBmax and independent of temperature. The magnitudeand part of the variability of PBmax and B are presumably causedby changes in species composition, as evidenced from the rangeof these parameters found among 10 predominant diatom speciesisolated from the Wadden Sea. The ratio of average light conditionsin the water column (Eav) to the light saturation parameterEk indicates that primary production in the Wadden Sea regionunder study is predominantly controlled by light limitationand that nutrient limitation was likely to occur for a few hoursper day only during 5 (dissolved inorganic nitrogen) to 10 (PO4,Si) weeks in the 2 year period investigated.  相似文献

The effects of hypo- and hypersaline treatments ranging from7–68% on the intracellular inorganic ion and organic soluteconcentrations were determined in the eulittoral green macroalgaeUlothrix implexa, Ulothrix subflaccida, Enteromorpha bulbosa,Acrosiphonia arcta, and Ulva rigida from Antarctica and SouthernChile. The main inorganic cations were K+, Na+, and Mg2+ inall species. The major osmolyte in E. bulbosa, A. arcta, andU. rigida was K+ at increasing salinities. In both Ulothrixspecies, however, K+ levels declined during hypersaline stressand Na+ concentrations rose significantly. The main inorganicanions were Cl-, SO24-, and PO34- in all algae, while E. bulbosaand U. rigida also contained NO+3. A. arcta showed an extremelyhigh SO2-4 content. The organic solutes proline, sucrose, andß-dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) played an importantrole in osmotic acclimation. The occurrence of three organicosmolytes suggests an additional function of these solutes ascryoprotectants in the cold-water macroalgae investigated.  相似文献

Using vacuolar perfusion, which enabled us to replace the cellsap with a solution containing no k+, Na+ and Cl, theconcentrations of these ions in the protoplasm of three speciesof fresh water Characeae were determined. They were respectively,78, 2 and 27 mM in Nitella flexilis, 101, 9 and 31 mM in Nitellapulchella, and 112, 3 and 21 mM in Chara australis. The abundance, biomass and size structure of the scyphomedusa,Aurelia aurita, was measured during two research cruises tothe northwestern Black Sea (July–August 1995 and April–May1997). Average biomass of Aurelia was relatively constant (132–179g wwt m–2) throughout the investigation period and similarto previous years. Abundance and biomass at individual stationsappeared to be unrelated to temperature and salinity when thelatter exceeded ~13. Biomass was low at coastal stations inthe plume of the Danube where depth was <20 m and salinitydropped to <11. The spring cruise (April–May) coincidedwith, or just followed the peak of strobilation. The summercruise (July–August) took place near the beginning ofplanulae larvae release. The population size structure was dominatedby small individuals in spring, while large medusae prevailedmainly in late summer. Aurelia was, on average, larger at deepwater stations during summer, suggesting that per capita foodsupply was higher further offshore. The individual body massincreased from spring through summer. Accordingly, the volume(wet wt) to length (bell diameter) relation changed significantly.If all medusae measured throughout the seasons were pooled,volume (V, in cm3) was related to length (L, in cm) accordingto V = 0.08 L2.71, which is similar to measurements conductedin other coastal areas. In contrast to the common conjecture,we did not find inverse relations between biomasses of Aureliaand the combjelly Mnemiopsis leidyi. Preliminary feeding experimentsindicate that Aurelia may feed upon small Mnemiopsis. The significanceof indirect trophic relations and direct feeding interactionsamong the gelatinous zooplankton in the Black Sea has importantconsequences for the energy flow along the food web and, therefore,needs further study.  相似文献

The calanoid copepod, Eudiaplomus graciloides, was reared fromegg to adult on uni-algal diets (0.1. 0.5 and 2.5 mg dry wt1–1) using the green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii,as food, or on a mixed diet consisting of Lake Esrom water filteredthrough a plankton net with pore size 45 µm and supplementedwith C. reinhardtii (2.5 mg dry wt 1–1). On the mixeddiet at 21.0°C growth in body dry wt (W, µg dry wt)was exponential, and the growth constants were 0.21 day–1in the early to mid juvenile stage (N1 - C4) and 0.11 day–1in the late juvenile to early adult stage (C4-A). At 14.5°Cthe corresponding growth rate constants were 0.10 and 0.08 day–1.Similar growth rates were found at uni-algal concentrationsof 0.5 and 2.5 mg dry wt I–1, and it was argued that thethreshold concentration for growth in Eudiaptomus was closeto 0.1 mg dry wt I–1. The clearance (C, ml h–1)of copepodites was measured on the uni-algal diets. The constantsof the regression (C = aWb) were: a = 0.125, b = 0.858 (2000C. reinhardtii ml–1), a = 0.068, b = 0.849 (10 000), a= 0.028, b = 0.875 (50 000). Ingestion rates were calculatedfrom the clearances and the average algal concentrations. Atthe three food levels the average daily rations were 30, 67and 125% of body dry wt. The respiration rate (R, nl O2 h–1)was measured in individuals reared on the mixed diet. The constantsof the regression (R = aWb) were: a = 4.82, b = 1.07 (nauplii,14.5°C), a = 4.17, b = 0.904 (copepodites and adults, 14.5°C),a = 6.87, b = 0.757 (copepodites and adults, 21.0°C). Nosignificant difference in the respiration rate of copepoditesreared on uni-algal diets and the mixed diet could be demonstrated.Energy budgets were calculated. The assimilation efficiencyand the gross growth efficiency of copepodites decreased markedlywith increasing food concentration, the net growth efficiencyvaried from an average of 0.44 at the lowest algal concentrationto 0.60 on the mixed diet. The results are discussed in relationto previous findings with both freshwater and marine copepods.  相似文献

A series of short-term in situ experiments was conducted intwo Cape Cod embayments to estimate mortality rates of the toxicdinoflagellate, Gonyaulax tamarensis, resulting from grazingby zooplankton. Rates of grazing by the whole zooplankton communityand by specific zooplankton populations were measured at variouspoints in the G. tamarensis bloom cycle. The planktonic larvaeof the spionid polychaete Polydora ligni and the tintinnid ciliateFavella sp. were important grazers in the systems studied. Gonyaulax-specificclearance rates effected by Polydora ranged from 0.02 to 0.5ml individual–1 h–1; for Favella the range was aboutan order to magnitude lower. Peak population densities wereclose to 900 and 400 individuals 1–1 for P. ligni andFavella, respectively. Whether measured directly or predictedas the product of individual clearance rates and numerical abundance,rates of grazing were often higher than estimated algal divisionrates in years when blooms failed to develop.
