The anaerobic treatment of the wastewater from the meat processing industry was studied using a 7.2 1 UASB reactor. The reactor was equipped with an unconventional configuration of the three-phase separation system. The effluent was characterized in terms of pH (6.3-6.6), chemical oxygen demand (COD) (2,000-6,000 mg l(-1)), biochemical oxygen demand BOD5 (1,300-2,300 mg 1(-1)), fats (40-600 mg l(-1)) and total suspended solids (TSS) (850-6,300 mg l(-1)) The reactor operated continuously throughout 80 days with hydraulic retention time of 14, 18 and 22 h. The wastewater from Rezende Industrial was collected after it had gone through pretreatment (screening, flotation and equalization). COD, BOD and TSS reductions and the biogas production rate were the parameters considered in analyzing the efficiency of the process. The average production of biogas was 111 day(-1) (STP) for the three experimental runs. COD removal varied from 77% to 91% while BOD removal was 95%. The removal of total suspended solids varied from 81% to 86%. This fact supports optimal efficiency of the proposed three-phase separation system as well as the possibility of applying it to the treatment of industrial effluents.  相似文献

Moringa oleifera is a plant whose seeds have coagulation properties for treating water and wastewater. In this study the coagulation efficiency of Moringa oleifera kept in different storage conditions were studied. The Moringa oleifera seeds were stored at different conditions and durations; open container and closed container at room temperature (28 degrees C) and refrigerator (3 degrees C) for durations of 1, 3 and 5 months. Comparison between turbidity removal efficiency of Moringa oleifera kept in refrigerator and room temperature revealed that there was no significant difference between them. The Moringa oleifera kept in refrigerator and room temperature for one month showed higher turbidity removal efficiency, compared to those kept for 3 and 5 months, at both containers. The coagulation efficiency of Moringa oleifera was found to be dependent on initial turbidity of water samples. Highest turbidity removals were obtained for water with very high initial turbidity. In summary coagulation efficiency of Moringa oleifera was found independent of storage temperature and container, however coagulation efficiency of Moringa oleifera decreased as storage duration increased. In addition, Moringa oleifera can be used as a potential coagulant especially for very high turbidity water.  相似文献

A laboratory scale rotating biological contactor (RBC) predenitrification system incorporating anoxic and aerobic units was evaluated for the treatment of settled high-strength municipal wastewater. The system was operated under four recycle ratios (1, 2, 3 and 4) and loading rates of 38-182 gCOD/m(2)d and 0.22-14 gOxid-N/m(2)d on the anoxic unit and 3.4-18 gCOD/m(2)d and 0.24-1.8 gNH(4)-N/m(2)d on the aerobic. The average removal efficiency in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD(5)), total suspended solids (TSS) and total nitrogen (Total-N) was 82%, 86%, 63% and 54%; settling of the RBC effluent increased COD and TSS removal to 94% and 97%. An increase in hydraulic loading resulting from higher recirculation, had limited negative effect on organic removal but improved nitrogen removal, and in terms of Total-N removal efficiency increased up to a ratio of 3 and then decreased.  相似文献

Investigation of the spatial distribution of metals was conducted for two constructed wetlands used as tertiary treatment in Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science (CNU) and Metal Processing Industries (MPI) located in Tainan, Taiwan. These two distinguished sites were selected to compare the distribution of metals for constructed wetlands treating different types of wastewater. Along the distance, samples of water, sediment, and macrophytes were analyzed for metals including Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Additionally, measurements of water quality including temperature, pH, EC, ORP, DO, TSS, BOD, COD, and turbidity were performed. Results show that, at CNU, wastewater contained higher organic consititute (BOD 29.3 +/- 11.7 mg/, COD 46.7 +/- 33.6 mg/L) with low metals content. Wastewater at MPI contained low level of organic consititute (BOD 7.1 +/- 3.3 mg/L, and COD 66.0 +/- 56.5 mg/L) and higher metals content. Metals distribution of both sites showed similar results where metals in the sediments in the inlet zone have greater concentrations than other areas. The constructed wetlands can remove Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. However, there was no removal of Al, Cr, Fe, and Mn. A distance along the constructed wetlands had no effect on metal concentrations in macrophyte and water.  相似文献

Different start-up procedures of an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) digester were carried out. Start-up without inoculum (experiment A) was delayed for about 120 day. The digester reached 75-85% total suspended solids (TSS) removal, 54-58% total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) removal and 63-73% biological oxygen demand (BOD5) removal at influent concentrations of 240-340 mg TCODil-1, temperatures of 13.5-15 degrees C and hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 10-11 h. Digested sludge was used as inoculum in experiment B. After the start-up period of 75 days, digester efficiencies were 58%, 41% and 54% for TSS, TCOD and BOD5 removal, respectively, working at 169 mg TCODil-1, temperature of 14 degrees C and HRT of 11 h. The sludge bed developed and stabilised quickly when using a hydraulically adapted inoculum (experiment C), but TCOD and BOD5 removals remained low and volatile fatty acids (VFA) accumulated in the effluent.  相似文献

This study tested the applicability of a submerged vacuum ultrafiltration membrane technology in combination with the biological treatment system to achieve dry-ditch criteria stipulated as follows: BOD5, TSS, NH3-N, and total phosphorous (TP) concentration not exceeding 10, 10, 1, and 0.5 mg/L respectively for the treatment of high strength food-processing wastewater. During the study, the biological system, operated at average hydraulic retention time of 5-6 days, achieved 95-96.5% BOD removal and 96-99% COD removal. The external membrane system ensured the achievability of the BOD and TSS criteria, with BOD and TSS concentrations in the permeate of 1-2 and 1-8 mg/L respectively. Nitrate, and nitrite concentrations increased during membrane filtration, while ammonia concentrations decreased. The most salient finding of this study is that, contrary to common belief, for industrial wastewaters, the filterability of the mixed liquor is influenced by the soluble organics, and may be low, thus necessitating operation of bioreactors at low mixed liquor solids. This study demonstrated that bioreactors operated at low SRTs and in combination with ultrafiltration can still achieve superior effluent quality that may meet reuse criteria at reasonable cost.  相似文献

A study was conducted to investigate the efficiency of coagulation and flocculation processes for removing colour from a semi-aerobic landfill leachate from one of the landfill sites in Malaysia. Four types of coagulant namely aluminium (III) sulphate (alum), ferric (III) chloride, ferrous (II) sulphate and ferric (III) sulphate were studied using standard jar test apparatus. Results indicated that ferric chloride was superior to the other coagulants and removed 94% of colour at an optimum dose of 800 mg/l at pH 4. The effect of coagulant dosages on colour removal showed similar trend as for COD, turbidity and suspended solids. This suggested that colour in landfill leachate was mainly contributed by organic matters with some insoluble forms that exhibited turbidity and suspended solids readings. The results from this study suggested that ferric chloride could be a viable coagulant in managing colour problems associated with landfill leachate.  相似文献

The physicochemical treatment of the wastewater from a meat processing industry was studied using three ferric salts as coagulants in conjunction with four different polymers as coagulation aids by batch column flotation. The effluent was characterized in terms of pH (6.5-6.7), turbidity (1000-12000 NTU), total solids (TS) (2300-7000mgl(-1)), oils and greases (OG) (820-1050mgl(-1)), and biochemical and chemical oxygen demands (BOD(5) and COD) (1200-1760 and 2800-3230mgl(-1)), respectively. The treatments achieved typical organic load reductions of oils and greases, and total solids (up to 85%), as well as biochemical and chemical oxygen demands (between 62.0-78.8% and 74.6-79.5%, respectively). The research also found that the utilization of a column flotation achieved high efficiency of organic matter removal and its operation as a primary treatment showed no significant dependence of pollutant removal and air flow rate.  相似文献

The biodegradability of Pinus radiata bleached kraft mill wastewater by an activated sludge treatment during a period of 280 days was evaluated. The effect of varying hydraulic retention time (HRT) in the range of 48 to 4.5 h and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) addition on removal of biological oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (TSS and VSS), total phenolic compounds, tannin and lignin and reduction of toxicity was investigated. Removal of BOD5 was higher than 90% when HRT varied from 16 to 6 h, but decreased when HRT was less than 6 h. Similar performance was observed for COD removal, which was about 60% when HRT was varied from 16 to 6 h. Removal of total phenolic compounds and tannin and lignin was seriously affected by HRT. N and P addition to maintaining a ratio of 100:5:0.3 provided optimal BOD5, COD and suspended solids removal when HRT varied from 16 to 7 h, and no toxicity (using Daphnia) was detected in the treated effluent. When HRT was less than 6 h, the system showed destabilisation and pH, COD, BOD5 and suspended solids removal decreased.  相似文献

The data on flow, BOD, COD, TSS and TDS were collected from the common effluent treatment plant (CETP) for the period from June '96 to November '96. The data were analysed to assess the performance of the CETP in terms of removal efficiency for the above mentioned parameters. The original design of individual units in the CETP were scrutinized for their authenticity. The performance of the individual units in the CETP were analysed by analysing the influent and effluent samples of the respective units. The overall performance of the CETP during the above mentioned months was also analysed. The factors (F/M ratio and Šc) affecting the removal efficiency were examined in greater detail. The results were analysed and recommendations were made for the optimum performance of the CETP.  相似文献

The pilot-scale wastewater treatment system used in this study comprised a 40-l UASB reactor (6-h HRT) followed by three duckweed ponds in series (total HRT 15 days). During the warm season, the treatment system achieved removal values of 93%, 96% and 91% for COD, BOD and TSS, respectively. Residual values of ammonia, TKN and total phosphorus were 0.41 mg N/l, 4.4 mg N/l and 1.11 mg P/l, with removal efficiencies of 98%, 85% and 78%, respectively. The system achieved 99.998% faecal coliform removal during the warm season with final effluent containing 4 x 10(3) cfu/100 ml. During the winter, the system was efficient in removing COD, BOD and TSS but not nutrients. The system was deficient in the removal of faecal coliforms during the winter, producing effluent with 4.7 x 10(5) cfu/100 ml. During the warm season, the N removal consisted of 80% by plant uptake, 5% by sedimentation and 15% unaccounted for. A duckweed production rate of 33 t dry matter per hectare per 8 months was achieved.  相似文献

The Okavango Delta depends on water quantity and quality to sustain its ecosystem services. Whereas many studies have been carried out on its hydrology, few have been done on water quality in the delta. Water pH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were monitored at 10 sites along the Okavango–Boro–Thamalakane–Lake Ngami system almost fortnightly from June 2008 to June 2010. Water quality in the delta was generally good, despite high evapotranspiration rates which would normally produce very saline waters. Electrical conductivity and water temperature increased with distance from Mohembo to Lake Ngami, the former most likely due to evapoconcentration. In contrast, pH, DO, turbidity and TSS decreased with distance from Mohembo to Boro at the lower end of the seasonal floodplain, before increasing again to Lake Ngami. Dissolved oxygen and TSS most likely declined due to biological uptake and particle sedimentation, respectively. Strong and significant relationships were observed between TSS and turbidity and between DOC and EC, indicating that turbidity and EC could be useful proxies for routine estimations of TSS and DOC, respectively, in the delta.  相似文献

The Everglades Nutrient Removal Project (ENRP) was a 1544 ha constructed wetland built by the South Florida Water Management District as part of Everglades restoration efforts. The limnology of this wetland is characterized over its 60-month operational history. The ENRP received agricultural runoff containing high levels of C, N, P and other dissolved constituents; had moderately high alkalinity with a circumneutral pH; and had low to moderate DO. The ENRP provided substantial treatment (concentration reduction from inflow to outflow) for Al, Fe, NH4, NOx, SRP, TP, TSS and turbidity (high-treatment variables), while Secchi depth increased markedly. These changes were judged biologically significant. Dissolved oxygen, and water temperature had well defined annual cycles, while some level of seasonality was noted for Al, alkalinity, Ca, conductivity, DOC, Fe, hardness, K, Mg, Mn, Na, NH4, pH, Secchi depth, SiO2, TOC, TN, turbidity, and TSS. The ENRP was P limited based on TN:TP molar ratios. Dissolved ions were dominated by Ca, Cl, Na, and HCO3; the stoichiometric balance of both major and minor ions was similar throughout the wetland. The downstream settling of TSS was associated with increased light penetration, but did not appear important in sediment accretion. The adsorption of P to Ca, and perhaps Al and Fe, precipitates is thought to have been an important nutrient removal mechanism. Although there was little net reduction in DOC, we speculate that some incoming material was degraded and replaced by new DOC produced within the wetland.  相似文献

Green roof technology is used to reduce the quantity of stormwater runoff, but questions remain regarding its impact on quality. This study analyzed the total suspended solids (TSS) in and the turbidity of runoff from green roof growth media mixed with composted pine bark in an indoor pot study. The results showed that there were elevated levels of TSS and turbidity in the runoff that decreased over time for all growth media. Both TSS and turbidity are affected by the type of growth media. Lava and haydite had higher mean TSS and mean turbidity than arkalyte and bottom ash. Vegetation reduced the mean turbidity and mean TSS of the first flush by an average of 53% and 63%, respectively, but generally had no statistically significant effect thereafter. The results indicate that the media, rather than the vegetation, has a greater effect on TSS and turbidity in the runoff In areas with stringent water quality regulations for stormwater runoff from developed sites, media selection may be an important consideration. It may also be necessary in these regions to ensure that the roof is planted prior to receiving rainfall to minimize the first flush effect and that any irrigation does not result in runoff.  相似文献

Collagen fibrillogenesis in the presence of lanthanides   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Following removal of most of the telopeptide regions with pepsin, bovine dermal collagen gelled more slowly to form fibrils with a weak banding pattern. The reduction in gelling rate reflected an increase in the length of the nucleation phase and a lower rate of turbidity increase during the growth phase; the activation energy of both phases was increased. Lanthanide ions, phosphate, or, to a lesser degree, Ca2+ restored higher gelling rates to pepsin-treated collagen, but were unable to improve the banding pattern. Only lanthanide ions were able to accelerate the polymerization of intact collagen, lowering the activation energies of both the nucleation and growth phases. Lanthanide ions and phosphate also improved the banding characteristics of fibrils formed from intact collagen, without changing their width. Luminescence studies confirmed the direct binding of Tb3+ to collagen and suggested that the lanthanide ions may mediate their effects on fibrillogenesis by attaching to the helical part of the molecule. Quantitative considerations indicate that five or less lanthanide ion-binding sites per collagen molecule may be involved in the promotion of fibril formation.  相似文献

Depth filtration has been widely used during process scale clarification of cell culture supernatants for the removal of cells and cell debris. However, in addition to their filtration capabilities, depth filters also possess the ability to adsorb soluble species. This aspect of depth filtration has largely not been exploited in process scale separations and is usually ignored during cell culture harvest development. Here, we report on the ability of depth filters to adsorptively remove host cell protein contaminants from a recombinant monoclonal antibody process stream and characterize some of the underlying interactions behind the binding phenomenon. Following centrifugation, filtration through a depth filter prior to Protein A chromatographic capture was shown to significantly reduce the level of turbidity observed in the Protein A column eluate of the monoclonal antibody. The Protein A eluate turbidity was shown to be linked to host cell protein contaminant levels in the Protein A column load and not to the DNA content. Analogous to flowthrough chromatography in which residence time/bed height and column loading are key parameters, both the number of passes through the depth filter and the amount of centrifuge centrate loaded on the filter were seen to be important operational parameters governing the adsorptive removal of host cell protein contaminants. Adsorption of proteins to the depth filter was shown to be due to a combination of electrostatic and hydrophobic adsorptive interactions. These results demonstrate the ability to employ depth filtration as an integrative unit operation combining filtration for particulate removal with adsorptive binding for contaminant removal.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to assess the role of the macrophyte Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. in experimental temporarily flooded vertical-flow wetland filters treating urban runoff. For 2 years, hydrated nickel and copper nitrate were added to sieved road runoff to simulate contaminated primary treated urban runoff. During the first year, 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) removal efficiencies were lower in planted filters than in unplanted filters. However, the BOD removal performances of all filters were virtually similar irrespective of the planting regime during the second year. The nutrient removal performance of planted filters was more efficient and stable throughout the season particularly after the filters matured compared to that of unplanted filters. A substantial amount of nitrogen was also removed by harvesting P. australis, though metals were not, when compared to those retained in the filters. Furthermore, higher concentrations of nickel in the effluent were recorded in the planted filters, despite their ability to take up the heavy metals. P. australis provided undesirable conditions for precipitation of Ni by lowering the pH in the processes. Finally, after applying shock loadings of Cu, higher Cu outflow concentrations were recorded for planted in comparison to unplanted filters.  相似文献

Ten chitosan products, prepared as described in part I of this study, were evaluated in jar tests that measured their effectiveness for coagulation of suspended solids and removing turbidity from cheese whey. A polynominal regression analysis was found to be useful for determining the optimal effectiveness of each chistosan preparation, and was expressed as the percent reduction on turbidity per unit concentration of chitosan added. The effectiveness of the chitosan products was found to be inversely related to their molecular-weight values. This situation was different from the findings described in part II of this study, in which the filterability of activated sludge was tested. Enzymatic deproteination yielded chitosan products that performed better than those produced by alkali deproteination. Demineralized products were also more effective than those that had not been demineralized. The preparations deacetylated under a nitrogen atmosphere were more effective than those deacetylated in air, but this was shown to be true only for the first 5 min of deacetylation. When deacetylated for 15 min, no differences were noted. In this study, differences in performance between the various products were largely due to the differing dosages required to achieve the maximum reduction in turbidity of cheese whey, while the maximum responses achieved by the various products tested were about the same. A commercial product, which was less effective as a sludge coagulating agent in part II of this study, was more effective for cheese whey coagulation and turbidity removal than the majority of the experimental chitosan preparations tested.  相似文献

Longitudinal distribution and abundance of macroinvertebrate communities were examined in relation to hydrochemical variables along the Chubut River in the Patagonian Precordillera and Plateau, Argentina. The Chubut River (>1000 km) is the largest river in the area and its basin is subject to multiple uses: agriculture, cattle raising, urbanization and the hydrological regime of the lower section is modified by a reservoir. Quantitative benthic samples were collected at 13 sites in the higher, middle and lower sections of the river basin. Sites were visited four times during 2004 and physicochemical parameters, chlorophyll a and particulate organic matter (POM) were assessed. Ninety-five taxa were collected in the study, with total species richness per site ranging from 5 to 51, and benthos density averaging 299–5024 ind m−2. Altitude and turbidity were implicated as important factors determining macroinvertebrate assemblages along the river system, and an eutrophication gradient was documented in the regulated/urbanized section of the main river. High turbidity (TSS) and sedimentation limited algal productivity in the middle basin. Below the dam, TSS, total phosphorus (TP) and POM decreased, whereas soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and chlorophyll a increased. Macroinvertebrate density increased three fold in this area possibly due to habitat improvement and enhanced trophic resources. Mean species richness did not change below the impoundment; however the community was dominated by gastropods, chironomids and flatworms. The Chubut River is complex and its biotic community reflects the landscape attributes. While benthic composition and density was governed by turbidity and flood disturbance in some river segments, a greater environmental heterogeneity resulted in an unexpected high number of species at the main channel upper basin.  相似文献

A study was conducted to examine the potential of jute processing waste (JPW) for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with dye and other organics generated from various activities associated with jute cultivation and fibre production. Adsorption studies in batch mode have been conducted using dye solution as an adsorbate and JPW as an adsorbent. A comparative adsorption study was made with standard adsorbents such as powdered and granular activated carbon (PAC and GAC, respectively). A maximum removal of 81.7% was obtained with methylene blue dye using JPW as compared to 61% using PAC and 40% using GAC under similar conditions. The adsorption potential of JPW was observed to be dependent on various parameters such as type of dye, initial dye concentration, pH and dosage of adsorbent. The batch sorption data conformed well to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. However, lower BOD (33.3%) and COD (13.8%) removal from retting effluent was observed using JPW as compared to 75.6% BOD removal and 71.1% COD removal obtained with GAC.  相似文献
