Abstract

The semi-empirical thermodynamic model for the binding of metal ions to an emulsion (intralipid 20%) reported previously (Hall et al., 1991 ; Gaskin et al., 1993) is incorporated into a thermodynamic computer model. This permits the zeta potential and emulsion stability together with precipitate formation to be estimated for any intravenous nutrition regimen. A regimen frequently used in the intravenous nutrition of patients is considered in this modeling study. The effect of solution pH and calcium on the zeta potential of the emulsion is predicted. Calcium and magnesium are the only metal cations which are predicted to be of importance when considering stability of this emulsion.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The stimulatory effect of the clays illite and montmorillonite on zinc uptake by Scenedesmus obliquus is discussed. The competitive effects of hydrogen, phosphate, magnesium and copper ions on zinc uptake are illustrated. This competition is reduced in the presence of illite and montmorillonite and zinc uptake is stimulated. Ferrous ions have no effect on zinc uptake, while calcium ions antagonize zinc uptake at high concentrations. The latter effect was remarkable in the presence of montmorillonite.  相似文献

A study was performed to determine the effect of zinc deficiency on the zinc concentration of the retina, lens, and the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid. Weanling, male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed ad libitum modified AIN-93 diets containing 3 mg zinc/kg diet (−Zn; n=10) for 6 wk. Control animals were pair-fed (+ZnPF; n=10) or fed ad libitum (+ZnAL; n=10) diets containing 100 mg zinc/kg diet. At 6 wk, plasma and tibia zinc were measured by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry to confirm zinc deficiency. The zinc concentration of ocular tissues was measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Mean (±SEM) lens zinc concentration was significantly depressed in the zinc-deficient group as compared to that of pair-fed or ad libitum-fed controls, suggesting that the role of zinc in cataract formation should be investigated. The zinc concentration of total neural retina was preserved in zinc deficiency. Previously reported deterioration of retinal function in zinc deficiency may be the result of a decline in the zinc concentration of a specific cell layer of the retina that cannot be detected on gross analysis of the entire retina. Teniasis     
The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of level of the essential elements of copper, magnesium, and zinc status in cases of teniasis in children. Copper, magnesium, and zinc levels were measured in 40 children who were positive for intestinal parasite of Taenia saginata. Scores were obtained for the positives and their 30 age- and sex-matched T. saginata-negative healthy children. The mean concentration of copper, magnesium, and zinc in blood showed no statistically difference in T. saginata-positive children than in their controls both in females (p>0.05) and males (p>0.05). However, a clear numerically decrease was observed especially in magnesium and zinc levels compared to the controls both in females and males. The average magnesium concentration in T. saginata-positive female children and male children were 20±1.9 and 22±2.2 mg/L and it was 27±2.1 and 27±2.3 mg/L in controls, respectively. The mean values of the zinc in blood were 0.76±0.5 and 0.72±0.4 mg/L in T. saginata-positive female children and male children and 0.85±0.3 and 0.81±0.5 mg/L in female and male controls, respectively. No correlation could be demonstrated between age and mean values of copper, magnesium, and zinc in T. saginata-positive females and males and controls (p>0.05). No significant correlation could be found between blood copper, magnesium and zinc levels in T. saginata-positive female and male children and controls (p>0.05). Although there was no statistical correlation observed in copper, magnesium, and zinc levels between patients and controls, there seem to be, especially in magnesium and zinc levels, a decrease, whereas no change was seen in the zinc level in children infected with T. saginata compared to controls.  相似文献

BackgroundIntraluminal thrombus (ILT) formation plays a significant role in the progression of infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). Potentially, as ILT thickness increases the availability of trace elements in the aneurysm wall could decrease thereby leading to oxidative stress and intensifying pro-inflammatory cytokine generation.AimTo determine if thrombus thickness is related to the concentration of trace elements in the wall of infrarenal AAA.Patients and methodsThe concentrations of trace elements in the wall of the aneurysm sack and ILT obtained from 19 consecutive patients during surgery for infrarenal AAA were determined using emission spectrometry.ResultsThe concentrations of magnesium, zinc, manganese, and lead in the wall of AAA were significantly greater than in the ILT. Only the concentration of copper was lower in the AAA wall compared with the thrombus. The concentration of calcium, phosphorus, zinc, lead, copper, and magnesium increased with ILT thickness. The concentrations of no other trace elements in the wall of AAA were found to be related to the ILT thickness.ConclusionsIntraluminal thrombus thickness is not associated with a lower concentration of trace elements in the wall of the infrarenal AAA. Thus, the intraluminal thrombus participates in the progression of AAA by mechanisms independent of trace element supply to the wall of the aneurysm sack.  相似文献

BackgroundPityriasis Alba (PA) is a common skin disorder affecting the children and it has multiple risk factors.ObjectivesTo assess the serum levels of trace elements (copper, zinc, and magnesium) and hemoglobin (Hb) level in patients with PA.MethodThis is a case control study; 110 participants (55 cases and 55 controls) were recruited from pediatric dermatology and family medicine clinics, Cairo university hospitals. Patients were allocated into two groups, PA group (randomly selected male and female children age group (6–16) with PA lesions) and a matched control group. Full history was taken including sociodemographic data, present history of the lesions. Full general and dermatological examination was done. Blood samples were taken to asses iron and trace elements levels. The gained measures were analyzed by (SPSS) program version 22.ResultsThis study showed that Hb levels, serum ferritin, copper, zinc and magnesium were significantly lower in PA group. There was statistically significant difference between both cases and controls regarding trace elements (copper, zinc, and magnesium) with (p value was 0.000, 0.000 and 0.003) respectively. Zinc deficiency increased the risk by more than 15 folds. Also, there was statistically significant difference between both groups regarding Hb levels and serum ferritin (p value was 0.000). The reduced Hb level increases the risk of PA by more than nine folds (OR 9.6)ConclusionPA is associated with reduced levels of Hb, serum zinc, ferritin, copper and magnesium; sun exposure, skin phototype were found to be important risk factors for PA.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the total content of the essential elements of zinc and magnesium levels in patients infected with Blastocystis hominis. Zinc and magnesium concentrations were measured in 52 patients who were positive for the intestinal parasite Blastocystis hominis. Scores were obtained for the positives and their age- and sex-matched 60 Blastocystis hominis-negative healthy controls. For comparison of two groups of continuous variables, the independent samples t-test was used. The mean concentration of magnesium in blood was significantly lower in Blastocystis hominis-positive patients than in their controls both in females (p<0.05) and males (p<0.05). The average zinc concentration in Blastocystis hominis-positive female patients was 0.61±0.2 mg/L and 0.60±0.2 mg/L in controls (p>0.05). The mean values of the zinc in blood were 0.62±0.2 mg/L in Blastocystis hominis-positive male patients and 0.82±0.1 in controls (p>0.05). No correlation could be demonstrated between age and mean values of zinc and magnesium in Blastocystis-positive females/males and controls (p>0.05). No significant correlation could be found between blood zinc and magnesium levels in Blastocystis-positive female/male patients and controls (p>0.05). Magnesium levels were found to be clearly decreased, whereas no change was observed in zinc levels in the patients with Blastocystis compared to controls.  相似文献

Abstract

The evaluation of plants occurring naturally at contaminated environments are essential for applying this species in remediation techniques. In this context, the Sagittaria montevidensis with potential for phytoremediation was studied at an anthropogenic polluted stream in southern Brazil. The nutrients and heavy metal content were determined in the phytomass. The phytoremediation indexes were evaluated such as bioconcentration factor (BCF), translocation factor (TF), plant effective number (PEN), and potential phytoremoval (mg m?2). The S. montevidensis was then detected as presenting natural phytoextraction ability for potassium and calcium elements and also demonstrated rhizofiltration potential for phosphorus, manganese, aluminum, vanadium, sulfur, iron, arsenic, copper, magnesium, zinc, sodium, lead, cadmium, nickel, chromium, considering its ability of bioaccumulating these contaminants and retain high levels in the roots. The highest potential for bioremoval (mg m?2) of the S. montevidensis was detected for potassium and calcium (recommending thus the use for phytoextraction) and for aluminum, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, sulfur, and sodium, along with heavy metals (recommended for rhizofiltration). The S. montevidensis decontamination ability, along with its biomass production and its adaptability represents a great advance in order to the recovery of this degraded area and possible application in other contaminated watercourses in Brazil.  相似文献

Summary Formation constants for the calcium(II), magnesium(II) and zinc(II) complexes of the orally effective iron chelator, pyridoxal isonicotinoyl hydrazone (PIH) and three analogues, pyridoxal benzoyl hydrazone (PBH), pyridoxalp-methoxybenzoyl hydrazone (PpMBH) and pyridoxalm-fluorobenzoyl hydrazone (PmFBH) have been determined by potentiometry at 25\dg C andI=0.1 M [KNO3]. The four ligands bind calcium(II) weakly and magnesium(II) only slightly more strongly, as a l: l complex which is formed at pH \s> 8. The chelation of zinc(II) for all the ligands studied was greater than that for calcium(II) and magnesium(II), with complexation generally becoming significant at about pH 5. Thus, chelation of zinc(II) but not calcium(II) or magnesium(II) at physiological pH, 7.4 may be expected. Calculated values of the concentration of uncomplexed metal ion indicate that the selectivity of these ligands towards Fe(III) is comparable to that of the clinically used chelator desferrioxamine.  相似文献

The production of actinomycin D was examined using Streptomyces antibioticus growing on a complex medium based on glucose and casein hydrolyzate. Purification of the medium to remove calcium increased actinomycin production by about one-third and prevented production of a characteristic brown pigment. The sensitivity to magnesium concentrations was less than was reported by Katz et al.,11) while similar requirements were found for zinc and iron.  相似文献

Chaperonin GroEL assists protein folding in the presence of ATP and magnesium. Recent studies have shown that several divalent cations other than magnesium induce conformational changes of GroEL, thereby influencing chaperonin-assisted protein folding, but little is known about the detailed mechanism for such actions. Thus, the effects of divalent cations on protein encapsulation by GroEL/ES complexes were investigated. Of the divalent cations, not only magnesium, but also manganese ions enabled the functional refolding and release of 5,10-methylenetetrahydroforate reductase (METF) by GroEL. Neither ATP hydrolysis nor METF refolding was observed in the presence of zinc ion, whereas only ATP hydrolysis was induced by cobalt and nickel ions. SDS-PAGE and gel filtration analyses revealed that cobalt, nickel and zinc ions permit the formation of stable substrate-GroEL-GroES cis-ternary complexes, but prevent the release of METF from GroEL.  相似文献

目的:可降解锌合金材料有适中的降解速率,良好的机械性能。目前对于锌合金的体内生物安全性研究多集中于生物体内植入适量的锌合金材料。对于体内植入大量的可降解锌合金材料是否有不良影响,还未见文献报道。本实验从局部和全身反应来研究埋植过量可降解锌合金的早期生物安全性。方法:选取18只新西兰大白兔分为三组,于皮下植入锌合金内固定板及钉各4、6、8块,于术后3月、6月行大体观察,血常规、血生化、血液微量元素检查,内脏和材料周围组织的组织学检查和ICP-OES定量检测内脏锌含量观察锌的脏器蓄积情况,材料称重计算每日释放锌含量。结果:可吸收锌合金材料表面附着的白色粉末状物质随时间增加而增多,去掉表面白色物质后,材料表面愈加粗糙,术后3月、6月的白细胞计数(WBC),红细胞计数(RBC),谷丙转氨酶(ALT),谷草转氨酶(AST),总蛋白(TP),白蛋白(ALB),尿素氮(BUN),肌酐(Cr),血锌,血镁,血钙、血铜与术前相比无统计学差异。术后6月实验动物材料周围组织,心脏、肝脏、脾脏、肺脏、肾脏、性腺未检出异常。术后3月、6月肝脏、肾脏、脾脏的锌离子含量与术前相比无统计学差异。综合计算得到术后3月可降解锌合金内固定板的降解率为9.77±1.64%,术后6月为11.82±1.91%,螺钉的降解率术后3月为0.79±0.66%,术后6月为2.09±1.00%。结论:大量可降解锌合金植入体内的早期生物相容性良好。  相似文献

AimsCells undergo apoptosis in stressed status such as in intracellular calcium overload or extracellular calcium/magnesium deficiency. The mechanisms of how deficiency of the divalent metal ions induces apoptosis remain to be defined. Scavenger receptor BI (SR-BI) is a high density lipoprotein (HDL) receptor. Recent studies demonstrated that SR-BI is a stress response molecule which induces apoptosis upon serum deprivation. In this study, we assessed our hypothesis that the deficiency of calcium/magnesium induces apoptosis via SR-BI apoptotic pathway.Main methodsWe employed CHO cell lines expressing vector and SR-BI to test the effect of SR-BI on apoptosis induced by deficiency of calcium, magnesium and zinc in culture medium. The regain of different metal ions in deficient medium was also performed, respectively. Cell death was detected by morphological changes and quantified by LDH cytotoxicity assay. Apoptosis was also assessed by DNA ladder assay and DNA condensation assay. The SR-BIC323G mutant cells which lack the apoptotic activity of SR-BI were employed to verify the SR-BI-dependent effect on calcium/magnesium induced apoptosis.Key findingsThe deficiency of calcium/magnesium induced cell apoptosis in CHO-SR-BI cells, but not in CHO-vector cells. Moreover, no apoptotic cell death was observed in SR-BIC323G mutant cells, indicating that the deficiency of divalent metal ions induces apoptosis in a SR-BI-dependent manner. Furthermore, the restoration of calcium or magnesium, but not zinc, protected CHO-SR-BI cells from apoptotic cell death, in a dose-dependent fashion.SignificanceThese findings extend our understanding about how calcium and magnesium deficiency induces apoptosis.  相似文献

【目的】ZntR是一种金属调控蛋白,可催化锌外排基因的转录激活,防止细胞内二价Zn离子过量,但其对细菌生理功能的影响目前尚不清楚。【方法】本研究构建了嗜水气单胞菌ATCC7966(Aeromonas hydrophila,A.h)的zntR缺失株及补救株,对菌株的生物被膜形成能力、溶血活性、运动能力和响应金属离子胁迫等生理表型进行评估。【结果】敲除zntR基因的菌株对锌和铬离子胁迫敏感、对钴离子胁迫耐受,并且生物被膜形成能力下降、运动能力增强,这些表型在其补救菌株中均能得到恢复。进一步利用DIA定量蛋白质组学技术比较野生株和zntR缺失株的蛋白表达差异,发现ZntR还可能参与双组分系统、细菌的趋化性等代谢通路的调控。【结论】该研究结果可为今后深入探讨zntR转录因子参与细菌生理功能的调控机制提供理论依据。  相似文献

Phosphate plays a key role in regulating primary productivity in several regions of the world's oceans and here dissolved organic phosphate can be an important phosphate source. A key enzyme for utilizing dissolved organic phosphate is alkaline phosphatase and the phoA‐type of this enzyme has a zinc cofactor. As the dissolved zinc concentration is low in phosphate depleted environments, this has led to the hypothesis that some phytoplankton may be zinc‐P co‐limited. Recently, it was shown that many marine bacteria contain an alternative form of alkaline phosphatase called phoX, but it is unclear which marine lineages carry this enzyme. Here, we describe the occurrence in low phosphate environments of phoX that is associated with uncultured Prochlorococcus and SAR11 cells. Through heterologous expression, we demonstrate that phoX encodes an active phosphatase with a calcium cofactor. The enzyme also functions with magnesium and copper, whereas cobalt, manganese, nickel and zinc inhibit enzyme activity to various degrees. We also find that uncultured SAR11 cells and cyanophages contain a different alkaline phosphatase related to a variant present in several Prochlorococcus isolates. Overall, the results suggest that many bacterial lineages including Prochlorococcus and SAR11 may not be subject to zinc‐P co‐limitation.  相似文献

目的:探讨肺炎患儿血清维生素D及微量元素监测的临床意义。方法:选取我院2015年1月-2016年1月收治的600例肺炎患儿为观察组及同期来我院体检的健康儿童400例为对照组,检测两组受试儿童的维生素D、铁、锌、钙、铜、镁水平。结果:观察组患儿锌、铁缺乏比例均明显高于健康儿童(P0.05),两组钙、铜、镁缺乏比例相比差异无统计学意义(P0.05)。观察组1岁以下(包括1岁,婴儿期)、1-3岁(包括3岁,幼儿期)、3-6岁(包括6岁,学龄前)患儿体内锌、铁含量明显低于同年龄段健康儿童(P0.05),各组钙、铜、镁含量相比差异无统计学意义(P0.05)。两组受试儿童体内25-羟基维生素D含量及其缺乏情况相比差异均无统计学意义(P0.05)。结论:锌和铁缺乏可能与儿童肺炎的发生发展具有一定的关系,及时补充锌和铁有助于提高患儿免疫力,促进患儿恢复。  相似文献

The study describes the concentrations of zinc, magnesium, copper, iron, and biochemical markers of seminal vesicle and prostate in seminal plasma of different categories of infertile men. The zinc level in oligasthenospermic subjects was significantly higher than in azoospermic, asthenospermic, and oligospermic subjects. The γ-glutamyl transpeptidase activity in both oligoasthenospermic and azoospermic subjects were significantly lower than in asthenospermic and oligospermic individuals. There was no significant difference in iron, copper, and magnesium levels and acid phosphatase activity among the different infertile categories. A positive correlation between zinc and acid phosphatase (r=0.84, r=0.73; p<0.05), and between copper and fructose (r=0.81, r=0.72; p<0.05) was observed in oligoasthenospermic and azoospermic men, respectively. On the basis of our results, it may be postulated that there is a direct effect of the trace elements zinc and copper on acid phosphatase and fructose, respectively, in oligoasthenospermic and azoospermic subjects.  相似文献

Metallic micronutrients are essential throughout the plant life cycle. Maintaining metal homeostasis in plant tissues requires a highly complex and finely tuned network controlling metal uptake, transport, distribution and storage. Zinc and cadmium hyperaccumulation, such as observed in the model plant Arabidopsis halleri, represents an extreme evolution of this network. Here, non-ectopic overexpression of the A. halleri ZIP6 (AhZIP6) gene, encoding a zinc and cadmium influx transporter, in Arabidopsis thaliana enabled examining the importance of zinc for flower development and reproduction. We show that AhZIP6 expression in flowers leads to male sterility resulting from anther indehiscence in a dose-dependent manner. The sterility phenotype is associated to delayed tapetum degradation and endothecium collapse, as well as increased magnesium and potassium accumulation and higher expression of the MHX gene in stamens. It is rescued by the co-expression of the zinc efflux transporter AhHMA4, linking the sterility phenotype to zinc homeostasis. Altogether, our results confirm that AhZIP6 is able to transport zinc in planta and highlight the importance of fine-tuning zinc homeostasis in reproductive organs. The study illustrates how the characterization of metal hyperaccumulation mechanisms can reveal key nodes and processes in the metal homeostasis network.  相似文献

Bloodstream infection by the pathogenic fungus Candida albicans is a major health problem. Candidemia is often associated with medical devices, which can act as substrates for biofilm development. Biofilm‐related infections are relatively difficult to treat because of their resistance to antimicrobial agents. It is therefore important to explore the mechanisms of biofilm formation. Dimorphism is a major contributor to biofilm formation in C. albicans. To determine whether the hypha‐related proteins Pra1 (pH‐regulated antigen) and Zrt1 (zinc transporter) are responsible for biofilm formation, the ability of pra1 and zrt1 deletion mutants to form biofilms was investigated. Biofilm formation by both deletion mutants was less than that of the wild‐type strain. Because Pra1 and Zrt1 are also related to the zinc homeostasis system, the effects of adding zinc on biofilm formation were also examined. Biofilm formation was increased in the presence of zinc. These data suggest that Pra1 and Zrt1 regulate biofilm formation through zinc homeostasis.
