The oxidative photosynthetic carbon cycle (or C2 cycle) is the metabolic pathway responsible for photosynthetic oxygen uptake and the light‐dependent production of carbon dioxide that is termed photorespiration. The C2 and reductive C3 cycles coexist, and combined, represent total photosynthetic carbon metabolism. A brief historical review is presented beginning with the early observations of the oxygen inhibition of photosynthesis up to the discovery of the oxygenase activity associated with ribulose 1,5‐bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase. The properties and the role of the compartmentalization of the enzymes involved with the pathway and the transport of C2 cycle intermediates are reviewed. The relationship of the C2 cycle to photorespiratory nitrogen metabolism and other associated metabolic pathways and the properties and regulation of the C2 cycle in diverse photosynthetic organisms are discussed.  相似文献

Respiratory cycle related EEG change (RCREC) is characterized by significant relative EEG power changes within different stages of respiration during sleep. RCREC has been demonstrated to predict sleepiness in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea and is hypothesized to represent microarousals. As such RCREC may provide a sensitive marker of respiratory arousals. A key step in quantification of RCREC is respiratory signal segmentation which is conventionally based on local maxima and minima of the nasal flow signal. We have investigated an alternative respiratory cycle segmentation method based on inspiratory/expiratory transitions. Sixty two healthy paediatric participants were recruited through staff of local universities in Bolivia. Subjects underwent attended polysomnography on a single night (Compumedics PS2 system). Studies were sleep staged according to standard criteria. C3/A2 EEG channel and time-locked nasal flow (thermistor) were used in RCREC quantification. Forty Seven subjects aged 7–17 (11.4 ± 3) years (24M:23F) were found to have usable polysomnographs for the purpose of RCREC calculation. Respiratory cycles were segmented using both the conventional and novel (transition) methods and differences in RCREC derived from the two methods were compared in each frequency band. Significance of transition RCREC as measured by Fisher's F value through analysis of variance (ANOVA) was found to be significantly higher than the conventional RCREC in all frequency bands (P < 0.05) but beta. This increase in statistical significance of RCREC as demonstrated with the novel transition segmentation approach suggests better alignment of the respiratory cycle segments with the underlying physiology driving RCREC.  相似文献

Checkpoints help ensure that cell cycle events occur in the correct order. Studies on mammalian cells identified inhibitors of complexes of cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases as components of cell cycle checkpoints and provide the first glimpse of the molecular pathways that prevent cells with damaged DNA from replicating their DNA. In embryos, the extent to which checkpoints arrest the cell cycle reflects the relative strength of inhibitory checkpoints and the machinery driving the cell cycle forward.  相似文献

Analysis of original and literary data permits to conclude that the life cycle in Orthonectida may be characterized as a monohost--monoxenous one, including regular interchange of three generations: asexual and parthenogenetic ones, which are represented by parasitic plasmodiums, and sexual generation, represented by free living and non-feeding males and females or, rarely, hermaphrodites. The sexual individuals are bilaterial, while the parasitic ones are anaxonic. The life cycle of Orthonectida includes the agamic reproduction, apomictic parthenogenesis and sexual reproduction regularly following one another. The life cycle of Orthonectida can be considered as a combination of metagenesis and heterogony. So far, such combination has not been described in any group of metazoan parasites.  相似文献

The Keystone Symposium on the Cell Cycle and Development brought together biologists with an interest in how cell cycle control is integrated into the ontogenetic program of multicellular organisms, and showcased research using a wide variety of systems from both animals and plants. 48 right‐handed subjects performed verbal and spatial hemifield tachistoscopic tasks, half of them in spring and the other half in autumn. Significant differences were detected showing increased right visual field (left hemisphere) advantage in spring and increased left visual field (right hemisphere) advantage in autumn. Results may help to explain the reported seasonal propensity towards elevated mood in spring and towards depressed mood in autumn as related to the relative role of both hemispheres.  相似文献

Drosophila researchers met in sunny San Diego for the 49(th) Annual Meeting of The Genetics Society of America. It was cold outside and even colder inside. Like last year, 'Mitosis, Meiosis and Cell Division' was no longer a session. Instead, we searched out and covered talks and posters in 'Cell Division and Growth Control', 'Gametogenesis', 'Cytoskeleton and Cell Biology' and 'Genome and Chromosome Structure'.
