The lethal fighting of larvae in many parasitoid species is a striking example of sibling rivalry. Theory has suggested that such fighting, and subsequent solitary development, might be irreversible, but phylogenetic evidence suggests otherwise. New empirical work now shows that the loss of mobility in parasitoid larvae, with the retention of fighting behaviour, is one way to escape the trap of solitary development.  相似文献

The mutualism between fungus-growing termites (Macrotermitinae) and their mutualistic fungi (Termitomyces) began in Africa. The fungus-growing termites have secondarily colonized Madagascar and only a subset of the genera found in Africa is found on this isolated island. Successful long-distance colonization may have been severely constrained by the obligate interaction of the termites with fungal symbionts and the need to acquire these symbionts secondarily from the environment for most species (horizontal symbiont transmission). Consistent with this hypothesis, we show that all extant species of fungus-growing termites of Madagascar are the result of a single colonization event of termites belonging to one of the only two groups with vertical symbiont transmission, and we date this event at approximately 13 Mya (Middle/Upper Miocene). Vertical symbiont transmission may therefore have facilitated long-distance dispersal since both partners disperse together. In contrast to their termite hosts, the fungal symbionts have colonized Madagascar multiple times, suggesting that the presence of fungus-growing termites may have facilitated secondary colonizations of the symbiont. Our findings indicate that the absence of the right symbionts in a new environment can prevent long-distance dispersal of symbioses relying on horizontal symbiont acquisition.  相似文献

Ecological theory has been dominated by a focus on long-term or asymptotic behavior as a way to understand natural systems. Yet experiments are done on much shorter timescales, and the relevant timescales for ecological systems can also be relatively short. Thus, there is a mismatch between the timescales of most experiments and the timescales of many theoretical investigations. However, recent work has emphasized the importance of transient dynamics rather than long-term behavior in ecological systems, enabling the examination of forces that allow coexistence on ecological timescales. Through an examination of what leads to transients in ecological systems, a deeper appreciation of the forces leading to persistence or coexistence in ecological systems emerges, as well as a general understanding of how population levels can change through time.  相似文献

AIDS is the result of a constant struggle between the lentivirus HIV and the immune system. Infection with HIV interferes directly with the function of CD4(+) T cells and manipulates the host immune response to the virus. Recent studies indicate that the viral protein Nef, a central player in HIV pathogenesis, impairs the ability of infected lymphocytes to form immunological synapses with antigen-presenting cells and affects T-cell-receptor-mediated stimulation. An integrative picture of the abnormal behaviour of HIV-infected lymphocytes is therefore emerging. We propose that modulating lymphocyte signalling, apoptosis and intracellular trafficking ensures efficient spread of the virus in the hostile environment of the immune system.  相似文献

A multi-taxon historical biogeography approach (Brooks Parsimony Analysis) was used to estimate relationships among the Mesoamerican lowland and highland areas and the particular biogeographic history of Mesoamerican squirrels (Sciurus, Microsciurus and Syntheosciurus species). A total of 15 lowland areas and 12 highland areas plus 41 clades comprising 240 species (45,135 records) were employed to obtain Taxon-Area Cladograms and Area Cladograms. A single most parsimonious General Area Cladogram indicated a strong vicariant relationship between Southern Mexico and the remainder of Mesoamerica, and identified several vicariant nodes (Modern Chiapanencan Volcanic Arc, Honduras’ Great Central Depression, and Nicaraguan Depression) as well as historically independent highland areas. A secondary BPA in relation with Sciurus species showed several instances of post speciation dispersal or range expansion, lack of response to vicariant events, and, possibly, lineage duplication. The results obtained suggest that Mesoamerican biotas have been subjected to several major vicariant events, but the reticulated nature of some of its areas also indicates that dispersal (post-speciation dispersal and range expansion) had been important in the diversification of the Mesoamerican biota. This trend was also observed in the particular biogeographic history of Mesoamerican tree squirrels.  相似文献

Continued increase in the concentration of atmospheric CO(2) and its possible effects on global climate has generated intense research interest on the likely responses of terrestrial plants and vegetation. Results from this new research provide quantitative information on plant function and growth in an environment with a high CO(2) concentration, but are also relevant to understanding plant growth in the distant past and to the techniques employed by palaeobotanists for reconstructing past climates from fossil plant remains. Experimental CO(2) enrichment of plants has demonstrated direct effects on leaf physiognomy, the tolerance of plants to low temperature and the relationship between tree rings, CO(2) and climate; it therefore signals the need for caution in interpreting palaeoclimates from fossils.  相似文献

Fluctuations of fish populations abundances are shaped by the interplay between population dynamics and the stochastic forcing of the environment. Age-structured populations behave as a filter of the environment. This filter is characterised by the species-specific life cycle and life-history traits. An increased mortality of mature individuals alters these characteristics and may therefore induce changes in the variability of populations. The response of a generic age-structured model was analysed to investigate the expected changes in the fluctuations of fish populations in response to decreased adult survival. These expectations were then tested on an extensive dataset. In accordance with theory, the analyses revealed that decreased adult survival and mean age of spawners were linked to an increase in the relative importance of short-term fluctuations. It suggests that intensive exploitation can lead to a change in the variability of fish populations, an issue of central interest from both conservation and management perspectives.  相似文献

Adeno-associated viruses (AAV) are widely spread throughout the human population, yet no pathology has been associated with infection. This fact, together with the availability of simple molecular techniques to alter the packaged viral genome, has made AAV a serious contender in the search for an ideal gene therapy delivery vehicle. However, our understanding of the intriguing features of this virus is far from exhausted and it is likely that the mechanisms underlying the viral lifestyle will reveal possible novel strategies that can be employed in future clinical approaches. One such aspect is the unique approach AAV has evolved in order to establish latency. In the absence of a cellular milieu that will support productive viral replication, wild-type AAV can integrate its genome site specifically into a locus on human chromosome 19 (termed AAVS1), where it resides without apparent effects on the host cell until cellular conditions are changed by outside influences, such as adenovirus super-infection, which will lead to the rescue of the viral genome and productive replication. This article will introduce the biology of AAV, the unique viral strategy of targeted genome integration and address relevant questions within the context of attempts to establish therapeutic approaches that will utilize targeted gene addition to the human genome.  相似文献

Autotomy, the self‐amputation of limbs or appendages, is a dramatic anti‐predator tactic that has repeatedly evolved in a range of invertebrate and vertebrate groups. In lizards, caudal autotomy enables the individual to break away from the predator's grasp, with the post‐autotomy thrashing of the tail distracting the attacker while the lizard makes its escape. This drastic defensive strategy should be selectively advantageous when the benefit (i.e. survival) exceeds the subsequent costs associated with tail loss. Here, we highlight how the position of autotomy along the length of the tail may influence the costs and benefits of the tactic, and thus the adaptive advantage of the strategy. We argue that most studies of caudal autotomy in lizards have focused on complete tail loss and failed to consider variation in the amount of tail shed, and, therefore, our understanding of this anti‐predator behaviour is more limited than previously thought. We suggest that future research should investigate how partial tail loss influences the likelihood of surviving encounters with a predator, and both the severity and duration of costs associated with caudal autotomy. Investigation of partial autotomy may also enhance our understanding of this defensive strategy in other vertebrate and invertebrate groups.  相似文献

Developmental stages in multicellular organisms proceed according to a temporally and spatially precise pattern of gene expression. It has become evident that changes within the chromatin structure brought about by covalent modifications of histones are of crucial importance in determining many biological processes, including development. Numerous studies have provided evidence that the enzymes responsible for the modifications of histones function in a coordinated pattern to control gene expression in the short term and, through the transferral of these modifications by inheritance to their progeny, in the long term.  相似文献

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is caused by a drastic reduction in the ubiquitously expressed SMN protein, which is critical for the correct assembly of the snRNP complexes required for RNA splicing. However, it is unclear why loss of SMN and altered snRNP assembly only seem to affect motor neurons. Reporting in this issue, Zhang et al. (2008) challenge prior assumptions about the housekeeping function of SMN and demonstrate that loss of SMN leads to highly tissue-specific effects on splicing.  相似文献
