Two thousand plants of the water hyacinth,Eichornia crassipes Solms., were introduced on April 11, 1971, into a series of five ponds, each 5000 sq. ft. in area and 2.6 ft. deep. Treated waste water effluent from the Ames sewage treatment plant filled the ponds and was added to pond 1 at 127 gallons per minute. By growth and vegetative reproduction, these plants increased to more than 500,000, and all five ponds were covered completely by July 26. On that date, the extrapolated estimate of total wet weight was 287 U.S. tons/ acre (645 metric tons/hectare; 64500g/m2). The estimate of oven dry weight was 13.2 U.S. tons/acre (29.7 metric tons/hectare; 2970g/m2). Ammonia and nitrate disappeared rapidly from the pond water, and phosphate concentrations were lowered appreciably. Evapotranspiration and seepage accounted for water losses of more than 0.5 inches per day. The potential economic values of this plant and its possible use in tertiary treatment to reduce N and P components in waste waters are discussed briefly.  相似文献

The distribution pattern of cadmium was investigated in waste stabilization ponds designed for three-step sewage treatment processes. The overall mean concentration of cadmium in water and sludge was reduced by 30% and 33%, respectively, from the inlet of the anaerobic pond to the final outlet of the maturation pond. The level of cadmium in water hyacinth, plankton and fish remained higher in all the samples collected from the anaerobic or facultative pond compared to the last maturation pond. It may be reasonable to conclude that three-step ecological treatments accompanied by physical, chemical and biological processes of the waste stabilization ponds were effective in reducing the load of cadmium from sewage effluents.  相似文献

The incidence pattern of cadmium tolerance and antibiotics resistance by Escherichia coli was examined periodically from the samples of water, sludge and intestine of fish raised in waste stabilization ponds in a sewage treatment plant. Samples of water and sludge were collected from all the selected ponds and were monitored for total counts of fecal coliform (FC), total coliform (TC) and the population of Escherichia coli, which was also obtained from the intestine of fishes. Total counts of both FC and TC as well as counts of E. coli were markedly reduced from the facultative pond to the last maturation pond. Tolerance limit to cadmium by E. coli tended to decline as the distance of the sewage effluent from the source increased; the effective lethal concentration of cadmium ranged from 0.1 mM in split chamber to 0.05 mM in first maturation pond. E. coli isolated from water, sludge and fish gut were sensitive to seven out of ten antibiotics tested. It appears that holistic functions mediated through the mutualistic growth of micro algae and heterotrophic bacteria in the waste stabilization ponds were responsible for the promotion of water quality and significant reduction of coliform along the sewage effluent gradient.  相似文献

AIM: To study the microbiology of intensive, in-vessel biodegradation of a mixture of sewage sludge and vegetable food waste. METHODS AND RESULTS: The biodegradation was performed in a closed reactor with the addition of a starter culture of Bacillus thermoamylovorans SW25 under conditions of controlled aeration, stirring, pH and temperature (60 degrees C). The content of viable bacterial cells, determined by flow cytometry, increased from 5 x 108 g-1 of dry matter to 61 x 108 g-1 for 6 days of the process and then dropped to the initial value at the end of the process. The reductions of organic matter, 16S rRNA of methanogens and coenzyme F420 fluorescence during 10 days of the treatment were 67, 54 and 87% of the initial values, respectively. The biodegradability of the organic matter decreased during the 10 days of the treatment from 3.8 to 1.3 mg CO2 g-1 of organic matter per day. The treatment of sewage sludge and food waste at 60 degrees C did not remove enterobacteria, which are the agents of intestinal infections, from the material. The percentage of viable enterobacterial cells, determined by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with Enterobacteriaceae-specific oligonucleotide probe and flow cytometry, varied from 1 to 14% of the viable bacterial cells. CONCLUSIONS: The mixture of sewage sludge and food waste can be degraded by the aerobic thermophilic bacteria; the starter culture of Bacillus thermoamylovorans SW25 can be used to perform this process; and enterobacteria can survive under treatment of sewage sludge and food waste at 60 degrees C for 13 days. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The results show that FISH with an oligonucleotide probe can be used to study not only the growth but also the degradation of biomass. Obtained results could be used to design the bioconversion of sewage sludge and food waste into organic fertilizer.  相似文献

Saline water supply has been successfully practiced for toilet flushing in Hong Kong since 1950s, which saves 22% of freshwater in Hong Kong. In order to extend the benefits of saline water supply into saline sewage management, we have recently developed a novel biological organics and nitrogen removal process: the Sulfate reduction, Autotrophic denitrification, and Nitrification Integrated (SANI®) process. The key features of this novel process include elimination of oxygen demand in organic matter removal and production of minimal sludge. Following the success of a 500‐day lab‐scale trial, this study reports a pilot scale evaluation of this novel process treating 10 m3/day of 6‐mm screened saline sewage in Hong Kong. The SANI® pilot plant consisted of a sulfate reduction up‐flow sludge bed (SRUSB) reactor, an anoxic bioreactor for autotrophic denitrification and an aerobic bioreactor for nitrification. The plant was operated at a steady state for 225 days, during which the average removal efficiencies of both chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS) at 87% and no excess sludge was purposefully withdrawn. Furthermore, a tracer test revealed 5% short circuit flow and a 34.6% dead zone in the SRUSB, indicating a good possibility to further optimize the treatment capacity of the process for full‐scale application. Compared with conventional biological nitrogen removal processes, the SANI® process reduces 90% of waste sludge, which saves 35% of the energy and reduces 36% of fossil CO2 emission. The SANI® process not only eliminates the major odor sources originating from primary treatment and subsequent sludge treatment and disposal during secondary saline sewage treatment, but also promotes saline water supply as an economic and sustainable solution for water scarcity and sewage treatment in water‐scarce coastal areas. The presence of heavy metals in the sludges produced in wastewater treatment plants restricts their use for agricultural purposes. This study looks at different types of sludge (aerobic, anaerobic, unstabilised, sludge from a waste stabilisation pond, sludge from an extended aeration plant and heat treated sludge) and compares the distribution of heavy metals with the treatment that they have undergone. In addition, the total quantity of metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ca, K, Fe, Mg, Ni, Na, Pb and Zn) and some agronomic parameters necessary for characterising a sludge as suitable for use as amendment were determined. The BCR method for heavy metal speciation was followed. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied in order to obtain more information about metal speciation in the sewage sludges. It was confirmed that the concentration of heavy metals did not exceed the limits set out by European legislation and that the stabilisation treatment undergone by the sludges strongly influenced the heavy metal distribution and the phases to which they were associated. The waste stabilisation pond sludge, which has undergone a higher degree of mineralisation than the others, shows a lower metal bioavailability index since practically all the heavy metals in it are associated to the oxidisable and residual fraction. On the other hand the unstabilised sludge, which, along with that exposed to extended aeration, contains the highest accumulations of heavy metals in the most easily assimilable fractions.  相似文献

The fate of aniline, a representative of arylamine pollutants derived from the manufacture of dyes, coal liquefaction, and pesticide degradation, was comprehensively evaluated by use of unpolluted and polluted pond water as model environments. Evaporation plus autoxidation proved to be minor elimination mechanisms, removing ca. 1% of the added aniline per day. Instantaneous binding to humic components of a 0.1% sewage sludge inoculum removed 4%. Biodegradation of aniline in pond water was accelerated by the sewage sludge inoculum. A substantial portion of the degraded aniline carbon was mineralized to CO2 within a 1-week period, and microbial biomass was formed as a result of aniline utilization. Biodegradation was clearly the most significant removal mechanism of polluting aniline from pond water. A gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis of biodegradation intermediates revealed that the major pathway of aniline biodegradation in pond water involved oxidative deamination to catechol, which was further metabolized through cis,cis-muconic, beta-ketoadipic, levulinic, and succinic acid intermediates to CO2. Minor biodegradation pathways involved reversible acylation to acetanilide and formanilide, whereas N-oxidation resulted in small amounts of oligomeric condensation products.  相似文献

The performance of enriched sludge augmented with the B21 strain of Alcaligenes defragrans was compared with that of enriched sludge, as well as with pure Alcaligenes defragrans B21, in the context of a sulfur-oxidizing denitrification (SOD) process. In synthetic wastewater treatment containing 100–1,000 mg NO3-N/L, the single strain-seeded system exhibited superior performance, featuring higher efficiency and a shorter startup period, provided nitrate loading rate was less than 0.2 kg NO3-N/m3 per day. At nitrate loading rate of more than 0.5 kg NO3-N/m3 per day, the bioaugmented sludge system showed higher resistance to shock loading than two other systems. However, no advantage of the bioaugmented system over the enriched sludge system without B21 strain was observed in overall efficiency of denitrification. Both the bioaugmented sludge and enriched sludge systems obtained stable denitrification performance of more than 80% at nitrate loading rate of up to 2 kg NO3-N/m3 per day.  相似文献

The majority of night soil (human excrements) is source separated from other sewage water and treated at night soil treatment plants in Japan. Efforts have been made to achieve material recovery from this organic mass, together with other organic wastes such as kitchen wastes and manure, by expanding the functions at night soil treatment plants. These facilities with expanded function are called ‘sludge retreatment centers’, which are promoted by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare. Potential environmental impacts of sludge retreatment using two presently available systems in Japan are analyzed for comparison. Systems compared are: 1) Mebius system, a high-speed fermentation process with methane gas recovery and compost production and 2) a comparable system with a basic composting process. The functional unit for this study is concurrent treatment of 40 t/d of kitchen waste, 40 m3/d of night soil, and 60 m3/d of private sewage treatment tank sludge. Impact assessment on Global Warming (IPCC 1996, 20 yrs.), Acidification Potential (De Leeuv — AP), Eutrophication Potential (De Leeuv- EP) and Resource Index (Fava/SETAC & Heijungs) all indicated that sludge retreatment with Mebius system provides a better environmental performance. The main reasons are: 1) production of power using recovered methane and 2) reduction of sludge volume by digestion, which leads to reduction of fuel required for sludge drying. The collection and treatment of night soil and kitchen wastes involves many economic and social factors. Therefore, more studies with different functional units on these systems should be made to obtain a more complete picture that can be used for decision-making processes. The results of this study can be used as a starting point.  相似文献

Abstract

Electrometric studies were carried out on the interaction of heavy metal ions such as manganese, chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium and lead with the extracted organic matter, humic and fulvic acid from the sludge in a sewage oxidation pond. The distribution of heavy metals was between 60 and 97%, which is associated with the solid waste (sludge) of the oxidation pond. The adsorption/removal efficiency of metal ions onto the sludge ash was more than 90% and 97%, respectively, in the pure system. To obtain the ash, the sludge was burnt at 500°C, treated with nitric acid (1+1) to leach out all the metals and then filtered; the residue left on the filter paper was the pure ash. Both this and that coated with organic matter were studied. The adsorption isotherm for metals, humic/fulvic acids and metal-humic/fulvic acid complexes in the metal-free sludge ash and in the organic matter in the pure system were studied using the Freundlich relationship. Good agreement was found suggesting that sediment and humic/fulvic acids have an important role in the mobility, dispersion and sedimentation of metal ions in an aquatic environment. More of these heavy metals are removed in the pure system than in the natural system. This may be due to the lesser availability of humic and fulvic acids in the lagoons during the short detention time of sewage in suspension in the oxidation pond, whereas the sludge which has settled to the bottom of the pond for several years contains rich decomposed organic matter in the form of humic and fulvic acids containing heavy metals. Such pure systems could be useful for the effective removal of heavy metals.  相似文献

The lignite and pyrite containing spoil substrates of the Lusatian mining district are marked by very high acidity and salt concentrations due to pyrite oxidation and by a very low content of pedogenic organic matter and nutrients. The effects of fly ash application to neutralize the produced acid and of organic waste material application to improve the ecological soil functions were studied considering the carbon and nitrogen cycling. Nineteen, 38 and 57 t ha−1 sewage sludge and 22, 44 and 66 t ha−1 compost were applied to ameliorated lignite and pyrite containing substrate. An automated soil microcosm system was used to analyse the solid, gaseous and liquid phases. Almost 9% of total N applied with sewage sludge (620, 1240 and 1860 t N ha−1 applied) were lost over a period of 150 days mainly as NO3-N. The total N losses from compost treatments were three times lower (2.8–3.1% of applied Nt) and occurred in similar quantities as NH4-N and NO3-N. Only sewage sludge treatments showed slightly increased N2O emissions at the beginning of the experiment. CO2 emissions determined the carbon losses of all treatments. The C losses amounted to 3.2–4.7% and 1.5–2.7% of Ct applied with sewage sludge and with compost, respectively. Sewage sludge samples representing different stages during waste water and sewage sludge treatment were collected at four Austrian municipal waste water treatment plants. Changes of sludge composition are reflected by a specific infrared spectroscopic pattern. Anaerobically digested sludge was subjected to aeration in lab-scale reactors in order to find out if post-aeration after anaerobic digestion provides enhanced organic matter degradation and stabilization. Spectral data were evaluated by means of multivariate statistics. Similar spectral characteristics of sludge degradation stages were visualized by principal component analysis. The effect of additional aerobic treatment of anaerobically stabilized sludge was revealed by discriminant analysis that distinguishes additionally aerated sludge from all the other degradation stages of sludge because of changes in the spectral pattern by increasing stabilization. Based on partial least squares regression (PLSR) a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.91 was found between spectral characteristics and the chemical oxygen demand (COD).  相似文献

A Source of high-quality protein for animal feed, based upon algae recovered in the process of upgrading waste oxidation pond effluents and promising to be particularly economical, is being developed at the Technion. Unlike other types of single cell protein(SCP), the algal protein does not have to return the full production cost but only that of concentration and final processing. The balance is shared by the value of waste disposal and the reclaimed water. Whereas such systems as activated sludge require considerable mechanical energy to supply the oxygen needed for aerobically degrading organics in wastewater, oxidation ponds utilize solar energy for that purpose. The sludge obtained when their effluents are clarified consists largely of algae, bacteria, fungi, and zooplankton in relative proportions varying with operating conditions, and contains 40–60%(dry basis) high-quality protein. The high rate oxidation pond (a particularly intensive type of pond) produces on the average 34 g/m27sol;day solids, or over 100 tons/ha (hectare) annually. Two clarification routes have been found promising: centrifugation and alum flocculation followed by frothflotation. The latter route is less expensive in terms of both fixed and operating cost, and gives clarified effluent of higher quality, which can be seasonally stored with minimal eutrophication because the aluminum removes most of the phosphate from the effluent. A good product has been obtained by drum-drying the concentrate, and preliminary feeding tests have indicated that it can replace at least 1/4 of the soymeal in broiler rations and 2/3 of the fishmeal in carp feed. No ill effect of the aluminum in the product recovered by alum flocculation has been found so far a process for removing and recycling the aluminum has been developed nonetheless, in case ill effects do show up in further tests. The combined value of the benefits derived from a system centered around the high-rate oxidation pond with clarification by flocculation–flotation, in terms of waste treatment by alternative means, potable water saved, and soymeal replaced, significantly exceeds estimated cost.  相似文献

Summary Heavy metal-loaded sewage sludge was leached abiotically using FeCl2 and FeCl3 which are applied in waste water treatment plants to eliminate phosphate and for coagulation. Due to the hydrolyzing nature of ferric iron, ferric chloride (100 mmll L–1) was able to solubilize more than 90% of copper and zinc and more than 80% of cadmium, with an optimal pulp density of 3% (w/v), after 10 h of exposition at 25°C. Chromium, lead and nickel were solubilized to an extent of 40–70%. With the exception of copper (redoxolysis), all heavy metals monitored were leached following the principle of acidolysis. Chemical leaching with iron resulted in a secondary contamination of sewage sludge (96 g iron per kg dry weight). The insoluble iron compounds which were precipitated for adsorbed to sludge flocks could be resolubilized with oxalic acid (100 mM, pH<3.3) up to an extent of 90%. Iron was leached by acidolysis and held in solution by complexation with oxalic acid. The pH optimum for the treatment of sewage sludge with 100 mmol L–1 oxalic acid was pH 3.3. At this pH an excessive solubilization of nutrient elements and compounds (phosphorus, nitrogen, alkali and alkali earth elements) could be avoided concomitantly leaching 75% iron. Furthermore the hydrophobicity of the sewage sludge was significantly reduced as a result of treatment with iron chloride.Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (isolated from arsenopyrite and adapted on sewage sludge) utilized ferrous iron as an energy source in the presence of chloride ions (FeCl2) as efficiently as ferrous sulphate. No toxic effects of oxalic acid onT. ferrooxidans were observed at the prevailing concentration.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to determine if viruses were selectively eliminated during waste water treatment. Human enteric viruses were detected at all steps of treatment in a conventional activated sludge waste water treatment plant. Liquid overlays and large volume sampling with multiple passages on BGM cells permitted the detection of poliovirus (serotypes 1, 2, and 3), coxsackievirus B (serotypes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5), and echovirus (serotypes 3, 14, and 22), as well as reoviruses. The mean virus concentration was 95.1 most probable number of infectious units per litre (mpniu/L) in raw sewage, 23.3 in settled water, 1.4 in effluent after activated sludge treatment, and 40.3 mpniu/L in sludge samples. All samples of raw sewage and settled water, 79% of effluent water, and 94% of sludge samples contained viruses. The mean reduction was 75% after settling and 98% after activated sludge treatment. Poliovirus type 3 was rarely isolated after the activated sludge treatment, but was still detected in about one-third of the sludge samples. Reoviruses and coxsackieviruses were detected at similar rates from all samples and appear to be more resistant to the activated sludge treatment than poliovirus type 3. Poliovirus types 1 and 2 were present in almost every sample of raw sewage and settled water and still found in about half of the effluent and sludge samples, indicating a level of resistance similar to that of reoviruses and coxsackieviruses.  相似文献

Biodegradation of nitrobenzene by a sequential anaerobic-aerobic process   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Nitrobenzene was completely degraded by mixed cultures using a sequential anaerobic-aerobic treatment process. Under anaerobic conditions in a fixed-bed column aniline was formed from nitrobenzene through gratuitous reduction by cells of sewage sludge. This reaction was accelerated by the addition of glucose. Complete mineralization of aniline was accomplished by subsequent aerobic treatment using activated sludge as inoculum. The maximum degradation rate of nitrobenzene (4.5 mM) in the two-stage system was 552 mg l–1d–1, referring to 154 mg of nitrobenzene per gram of glucose. In a second experimental phase glucose as cosubstrate and H-donor was replaced by synthetic waste containing ethanol, methanol, isopropanol and acetone. Again, nitrobenzene (1.9 mM) was completely degraded (maximum degradation rate of 237 mg ld–1, referring to 251 mg per gram of solvents). The major advantage of the described two-stage process is that the reduction of nitrobenzene by anaerobic pretreatment drastically reduces emission by stripping during aerobic treatment.Abbreviations HRT hydraulic retention time - OD546 optical density at 546 nm  相似文献

Challenge of psychrophilic anaerobic wastewater treatment   总被引:45,自引:0,他引:45
Psychrophilic anaerobic treatment is an attractive option for wastewaters that are discharged at moderate to low temperature. The expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor has been shown to be a feasible system for anaerobic treatment of mainly soluble and pre-acidified wastewater at temperatures of 5--10 degrees C. An organic loading rate (OLR) of 10--12 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD) per cubic meter reactor per day can be achieved at 10--12 degrees C with a removal efficiency of 90%. Further improvement might be obtained by a two-module system in series. Stabile methanogenesis was observed at temperatures as low as 4--5 degrees C. The specific activity of the mesophilic granular sludge was improved under psychrophilic conditions, which indicates that there was growth and enrichment of methanogens and acetogens in the anaerobic system. Anaerobic sewage treatment is a real challenge in moderate climates because sewage belongs to the 'complex' wastewater category and contains a high fraction of particulate COD. A two-step system consisting of either an anaerobic up-flow sludge bed (UASB) reactor combined with an EGSB reactor or an anaerobic filter (AF) combined with an anaerobic hybrid reactor (AH) is successful for anaerobic treatment of sewage at 13 degrees C with a total COD removal efficiency of 50% and 70%, respectively.  相似文献

Effect of Nitrate on Biogenic Sulfide Production   总被引:12,自引:7,他引:5       下载免费PDF全文
The addition of 59 mM nitrate inhibited biogenic sulfide production in dilute sewage sludge (10% [vol/vol]) amended with 20 mM sulfate and either acetate, glucose, or hydrogen as electron donors. Similar results were found when pond sediment or oil field brines served as the inoculum. Sulfide production was inhibited for periods of at least 6 months and was accompanied by the oxidation of resazurin from its colorless reduced state to its pink oxidized state. Lower amounts of nitrate (6 or 20 mM) and increased amounts of sewage sludge resulted in only transient inhibition of sulfide production. The addition of 156 mM sulfate to bottles with 59 mM nitrate and 10% (vol/vol) sewage sludge or pond sediment resulted in sulfide production. Nitrate, nitrite, and nitrous oxide were detected during periods where sulfide production was inhibited, whereas nitrate, nitrite, and nitrous oxide were below detectable levels at the time sulfide production began. The oxidation of resazurin was attributed to an increase in nitrous oxide which persisted in concentration of about 1.0 mM for up to 5 months. The numbers of sulfate-reducing organisms decreased from 106 CFU ml−1 sludge to less than detectable levels after prolonged incubation of oxidized bottles. The addition of 10 mM glucose to oxidized bottles after 14.5 weeks of incubation resulted in rereduction of the resazurin and subsequent sulfide production. The prolonged inhibition of sulfide production was attributed to an increase in oxidation-reduction potential due to biogenic production of nitrous oxide, which appeared to have a cytotoxic effect on sulfate-reducing populations.  相似文献
