The major objective of these studies was to assess the extent of the flow of released dissolved organic carbon (RDOC) from phytoplankton to heterotrophic bacteria. The second aim was to test Nalewajko and Schindler's (1976) hypothesis that the percentage of extracellular release (PER) of RDOC by phytoplankton is higher in oligotrophic than eutrophic waters. The studies on the relationship between the bacterial assimilation of RDOC and productivity of phytoplankton in the lakes of different trophy have shown a direct correlation. It was observed that higher utilization rate of phytoplankton RDOC occurred in lakes with higher primary production. The inverse relationship between productivity of lakes, i.e. trophy of waters, and amount of RDOC or PER is closely dependent on the heterotrophic activity of bacteria in waters.  相似文献

Iron Constraints on Planktonic Primary Production in Oligotrophic Lakes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Phototrophic primary production is a fundamental ecosystem process, and it is ultimately constrained by access to limiting nutrients. Whereas most research on nutrient limitation of lacustrine phytoplankton has focused on phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) limitation, there is growing evidence that iron (Fe) limitation may be more common than previously acknowledged. Here we show that P was the nutrient that stimulated phytoplankton primary production most strongly in seven out of nine bioassay experiments with natural lake water from oligotrophic clearwater lakes. However, Fe put constraints on phytoplankton production in eight lakes. In one of these lakes, Fe was the nutrient that stimulated primary production most, and concurrent P and Fe limitation was observed in seven lakes. The effect of Fe addition increased with decreasing lake water concentrations of total phosphorus and dissolved organic matter. Possible mechanisms are low import rates and low bioavailability of Fe in the absence of organic chelators. The experimental results were used to predict the relative strength of Fe, N, and P limitation in 659 oligotrophic clearwater lakes (with total phosphorus ≤ 0.2 μM P and total organic carbon < 6 mg C l−1) from a national lake survey. Fe was predicted to have a positive effect in 88% of these lakes, and to be the nutrient with the strongest effect in 30% of the lakes. In conclusion, Fe, along with P and N, is an important factor constraining primary production in oligotrophic clearwater lakes, which is a common lake-type throughout the northern biomes. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Peter Blomqvist (deceased 2004).  相似文献

In subtropical oceans phytoplankton carbon: phosphorus (C : P) ratios are high, and these ratios are predicted to increase further with rising ocean temperatures and stratification. Prey stoichiometry may pose a problem for copepod zooplankton nauplii, which have high phosphorus demands due to rapid growth. We hypothesised that nauplii meet this demand by consuming bacteria. Naupliar bacterial and phytoplankton carbon and phosphorus ingestion, assimilation and incorporation were traced using 33P and 14C radioisotopes. Bacterial carbon was incorporated four times less efficiently into biomass than phytoplankton carbon. In contrast, bacterial and phytoplankton phosphorus were incorporated at similar efficiencies, and bacteria could meet a substantial amount of naupliar phosphorus requirements. As parts of the ocean become more oligotrophic, bacteria could help sustain naupliar growth and survival under suboptimal stoichiometric conditions. Thus, nauplii may be a shortcut for phosphorus from the microbial loop to the classical food web.  相似文献

A limnological survey of eight small, atmospherically acidified, forested glacial lakes in the Bohemian Forest (?umava, Böhmerwald) was performed in September 2003. Water chemistry of the tributaries and surface layer of each lake was determined, as well as species composition and biomass of the plankton along the water column, and littoral macrozoobenthos to assess the present status of the lakes. The progress in chemical reversal and biological recovery from acid stress was evaluated by comparing the current status of the lakes with results of a survey four years ago (1999) and former acidification data since the early 1990s. Both the current chemical lake status and the pelagic food web structure reflected the acidity of the tributaries and their aluminium (Al) and phosphorus (P) concentrations. One mesotrophic (Ple?né jezero) and three oligotrophic lakes (?erné jezero, ?ertovo jezero, and Rachelsee) are still chronically acidified, while four other oligotrophic lakes (Kleiner Arbersee, Prá?ilské jezero, Grosser Arbersee, and Laka) have recovered their carbonate buffering system. Total plankton biomass was very low and largely dominated by filamentous bacteria in the acidified oligotrophic lakes, while the mesotrophic lake had a higher biomass and was dominated by phytoplankton, which apparently profited from the higher P input. In contrast, both phytoplankton and crustacean zooplankton accounted for the majority of plankton biomass in the recovering lakes. This study has shown further progress in the reversal of lake water chemistry as well as further evidence of biological recovery compared to the 1999 survey. While no changes occurred in species composition of phytoplankton, a new ciliate species was found in one lake. In several lakes, this survey documented a return of zooplankton (e.g., Cladocera: Ceriodaphnia quadrangula and Rotifera: three Keratella species) and macrozoobenthos species (e.g., Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera). The beginning of biological recovery has been delayed for ~20 years after chemical reversal of the lakes.  相似文献

In Sweden the recovery process of the four largest lakes (<500 km2) has been followed since the mid-1970's when the phosphorus loading was reduced by approximately 50%. A ten-year investigation period before that acts as a basis of comparison. The response of the dominating species in the phytoplankton communities in the eutrophic Lake Mälaren and the oligotrophic Lake Vättern is discussed also in relation to a pristine state of the lakes. The long-term investigations with monthly sampling make a natural phytoplankton biomass variation range possible to establish - a range that is mainly due to effects of weather fluctuations. In order to get a tool for water management where disturbing and highly disturbing total phytoplankton volumes can be anticipated from a certain phosphorus concentration, a model is suggested based on experiences from more than 50 Swedish lakes investigated during a series of years.  相似文献

1. In an attempt to discern long‐term regional patterns in phytoplankton community composition we analysed data from five deep peri‐alpine lake basins that have been included in long‐term monitoring programmes since the beginning of the 1970s. Local management measures have led to synchronous declines in phosphorus concentrations by more than 50% in all four lakes. Their trophic state now ranges from mesotrophic to oligotrophic. 2. No coherence in phytoplankton biomass was observed among lakes, or any significant decrease in response to phosphorus (P)‐reduction (oligotrophication), except in Lakes Constance and Walen. 3. Multivariate analyses identified long‐term changes in phytoplankton composition, which occurred coherently in all lakes despite the differing absolute phosphorus concentrations. 4. In all lakes, the phytoplankton species benefiting from oligotrophication included mixotrophic species and/or species indicative of oligo‐mesotrophic conditions. 5. A major change in community composition occurred in all lakes at the end of the 1980s. During this period there was also a major shift in climatic conditions during winter and early spring, suggesting an impact of climatic factors. 6. Our results provide evidence that synchronous long‐term changes in geographically separated phytoplankton communities may occur even when overall biomass changes are not synchronous.  相似文献

The importance of top-down effects of piscivorous fish on phytoplankton in natural oligotrophic lakes is still debated. In this study, we analyzed patterns in phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance in 37 oligotrophic Canadian Shield lakes in relation to variations in both piscivorous fish predation and resources (total phosphorus; TP). Zooplankton community structure (but not total biomass) was partially affected by the variation in fish predation while the phytoplankton community structure and total biomass showed no response. Carbon isotope analyses revealed that the lack of top-down effects is due to the uncoupling of the littoral and the pelagic food webs. We found that the fish community depends mostly on benthic resources, suggesting that only low planktivory occurred in our study lakes. Due to the absence of specialized zooplanktivorous fish, zooplankton is poorly exploited in these lakes and thus able to control phytoplankton by grazing. A comparison of our data with published studies on the TP–chlorophyll a relationships in both natural and manipulated systems shows that the phytoplankton biomass per unit of TP is relatively low in Canadian Shield lakes.  相似文献

Some aspects of iron cycling in maritime antarctic lakes   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Iron occurs in extremely high concentrations in certain maritime Antarctic freshwater lakes which seasonally develop an anoxic zone. In oligotrophic Sombre Lake the data show that Fe(II) precipitates as Fe(III) oxyhydroxides which bind phosphorus and return it to the sediments. In nutrient-enriched Amos lake, significant quantities of sulphide are also produced and this binds a proportion of the released Fe(II) so reducing the ratio of total iron to phosphorus at the redox boundary where the oxyhydroxides are formed. A proportion of the sediment-released phosphorus therefore reaches the upper waters of this lake (unlike in Sombre Lake) and provides the initial nutrient source for under-ice phytoplankton development in spring. Iron-reducing bacteria have been isolated, from Sombre Lake sediments, which apparently utilise the abundant Fe(III) oxyhydroxides. From thermodynamic considerations (assuming Fe(III) is not limiting) these should outcompete sulphate reducers and methanogens (both previously reported from Sombre and Amos Lakes) and could therefore constitute an important component of the anaerobic mineralisation of organic carbon in such lakes.  相似文献

1. Numerous studies have quantified the relative contribution of terrestrial‐ and phytoplankton‐derived carbon sources to zooplankton secondary production in lakes. However, few investigated the pathways along which allochthonous and autochthonous carbon (C) was actually conveyed to consumers. 2. We suggest that the combined use of fatty acid and stable isotope biomarkers could solve this issue. We conducted a field study on two oligotrophic lakes, in which primary production increased significantly between 2002 and 2004. We used modelling to estimate the contribution of terrestrial‐ and phytoplankton‐derived C to particulate organic C (POC) and zooplankton production from their δ13C values in 2002 and 2004. 3. According to the isotope model, phytoplankton‐derived C accounted for a major part of the POC pool in both lakes and supported more Daphnia sp. production in 2004 than in 2002. Fatty acid data revealed that increased contribution of algal‐C to Daphnia production, although common between both lakes, was achieved through C pathways that were different. In one lake, Daphnia grazed more intensively on phytoplankton, whereas in the other there was greater grazing on bacteria. In the latter case, the increased primary production resulted in greater release of algal‐derived dissolved organic C (DOC), which may have supported extra bacterial and eventually Daphnia, production. 4. This is the first study illustrating that the combination of fatty acid and stable isotope biomarkers could further our understanding of the factors controlling the relative magnitude of food webs pathways conveying organic matter to zooplankton.  相似文献

Using empirical data from 466 temperate to arctic lakes covering a total phosphorus (TP) gradient of 2-1036 mg L-1, we describe how the relative contributions of resource supply, and predator control change along a nutrient gradient. We argue that (a) predator control on large-bodied zooplankton is unimodally related to TP and is highest in the most nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor lakes and generally higher in shallow than deep lakes, (b) the cascading effect of changes in predator control on phytoplankton decreases with increasing TP, and (c) these general patterns occur with significant variations--that is, the predation pressure can be low or high at all nutrient levels. A quantile regression revealed that the median share of the predator-sensitive Daphnia to the total cladoceran biomass was significantly related unimodally to TP, while the 10% and 90% percentiles approached 0 and 100%, respectively, at all TP levels. Moreover, deep lakes (more than 6 m) had a higher percentage of Daphnia than shallow (less than 6 m) lakes. The median percentage of Daphnia peaked at 0.15 mg L-1 in shallow lakes and 0.09 mg L-1 in deep lakes. The assumption that fish are responsible for the unimodality was supported by data on the abundance of potential planktivorous fish (catch net-1 night-1 gill nets with the different mesh sizes [CPUE]). To elucidate the potential cascading effect on phytoplankton, we examined the zooplankton phytoplankton biomass ratio. Even though this ratio was inversely related to CPUE at all TP levels, we found an overall higher ratio in oligotrophic lakes that declined toward low values (typically below 0.2) in hypertrophic lakes. These results suggest that planktivorous fish have a more limited effect on the grazing control of phytoplankton in oligotrophic lakes than in eutrophic lakes, despite similar predator control of large-bodied zooplankton. Accordingly, the phytoplankton yield, expressed as the chlorophyll a-TP ratio, did not relate to CPUE at low TP, but it increased significantly with CPUE at high TP. We conclude that the chances of implementing a successful restoration program using biomanipulation as a tool to reduce phytoplankton biomass increase progressively with increasing TP, but that success in the long term is most likely achieved at intermediate TP concentrations.  相似文献

Introduction of strictly planktivorous fish to lakes can alter plankton communities via cascading interactions in food webs. Less is known about the large-scale and long-term effects resulting from the introduction of fish with more generalist feeding habits, and the extent to which these effects depend on lake trophic status. Paleolimnological records of three oligotrophic lakes in Maine, USA were used to analyze the response of plankton communities to the introduction of white perch (Morone americana), a fish that often numerically dominates fish assemblages and switches from strict planktivory to a more generalist diet during ontogeny. After white perch introduction, cladoceran ephippia size increased up to 50 %, suggesting that the most important role of this generalist fish, with respect to water quality, is as a piscivorous trophic link. Algal standing crop declined by a quarter to over a half of pre-introduction levels, suggesting that top-down effects of white perch reduced phytoplankton biomass. In comparing these oligotrophic lakes to prior work in a eutrophic system, white perch introduction had similar effects on zooplankton body size; however, cascading effects to phytoplankton were only observed in low productivity lakes.  相似文献

The dynamics of seston and dissolved elements in a meromictic lake with high concentrations of manganese and iron in the monimolimnion were studied through an annual cycle. This publication presents results for assimilation, sedimentation and recovery of nutrients (C, N, P, and Si) in the trophogenic zone. Phosphorus deficiency kept the productivity of the diatom dominated phytoplankton at an oligotrophic level. High concentrations of iron in influent streams and redistribution followed by precipitation of iron during periods of partial turnover removed phosphorus from the water. High concentrations of manganese and sulfate did not have the anticipated fertilizing effect, and recovery of nutrients from the depth of the lake was negligible. Mass balance calculations indicate that liberation of phosphorus from the sediments in the trophogenic zone was most important for the maintenance of primary production. 75% of carbon, 80% of nitrogen and 25% of phosphorus assimilated by the phytoplankton was mineralized in the trophogenic zone. Silica was effectively regenerated from the littoral zone during the decline of diatom blooms. Nitrogen and silica retention was 45% of the external load compared to 66% for phosphorus.Dept. of Limnology University of Oslo  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Potential phosphatase activity and phytoplankton from several lakes of different character were compared in order to evaluate the importance of lake water pH and phytoplankton composition for the activity and pH optimum of lake water phosphatases.
2. In oligotrophic lakes, in which phytoplankton biomass was most often dominated by Ochromonadaceae spp., optimum phosphate activity was found at pH values <6. In eutrophic lakes, where species of Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae dominated the phytoplankton biomass, optimum phosphatase activity was found at pH 7.5 or 8.5.
3. The pH optimum of phosphatase activity often differed from the corresponding lake water pH.
4. Experimental variation in phosphorus availability resulted in predictable changes in phosphatase activity. However, specific phosphatase activity, calculated per biomass of phytoplankton, was dependent on plankton species composition.  相似文献

The quantitative importance of photosynthetically produced dissolved organic carbon (PDOC) released from phytoplankton as a source of carbon for pelagic, heterotrophic bacteria was investigated in four temperate Swedish lakes, of which two had low (≈20 mg Pt 1−1), and two moderately high (60–80 mg Pt 1−1) humic content. The bacterial assimilation of PDOC was estimated with the 14C method, and the total production of the heterotrophic bacteria was estimated with the [3H]thymidine incorporation method. The release of PDOC from natural communities of phytoplankton was not restricted to periods of photosynthesis, but often continued during periods of darkness. Heterotrophic bacteria often assimilated the labile components of the PDOC at high rates (up to 73% of the released PDOC was assimilated during the incubation in our experiments). The contribution of PDOC to bacterial production exhibited large within-lake seasonal variations, but PDOC was at certain times, both in humic and non-humic lakes, a quantitatively very important carbon source for the heterotrophic bacteria. Under periods of comparatively low primary production, heterotrophic bacteria in humic lakes appear to utilize allochthonous, humic substances as a substrate.  相似文献

1. We describe some remarkable ephemeral, oligotrophic hardwater lakes formed because of land rise in the coastal areas of the Baltic Sea, that are unique in Sweden and probably also worldwide. Two younger, coastal lakes were studied by regular sampling for 1 year and compared with an older (i.e. greater altitude) lake, that passed through the oligotrophic hardwater stage some 3–4000 years ago. 2. Despite some differences in composition of the catchment, the two younger lakes were similar with regard to water chemistry and plankton community composition. The concentration of phosphorus was low while nitrogen was high, resulting in very high N/P quotients (101 and 131). Although water colour was moderate, the concentration of organic carbon was extremely high (average values of ≥ 20 μg TOC L–1), consisting mainly of dissolved compounds (DOC). 3. While the plankton was poorly developed, sediments in both lakes were covered by a layer of photosynthesising micro‐organisms. This substantial `microbial mat', which has not been described in detail before, was up to 15 cm thick and dominated by cyanobacteria and purple sulphur bacteria. The concentration of sediment phosphorus was extremely low (352 μg g–1 dw) in one of the lakes and dominated by organic‐bound (residual) phosphorus. 4. Deep sediments in the older lake, representing its oligotrophic hardwater period, differed in phosphorus composition from the currently oligotrophic hardwater lakes by having a strong dominance of HCl‐extractable (Ca‐bound) phosphorus. This indicates that phosphorus, initially organic‐bound within the microbial mat, is subsequently bound to calcium. We hypothesise that this is promoted by the environmental conditions created by the benthic photosynthetic activity, in combination with the prevailing hardwater conditions. 5. The rich and flourishing microbial community on the sediments may also explain the high concentration of DOC in the lake.  相似文献

Fluxes of free amino acids in three Danish lakes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SUMMARY. 1. Heterotrophic assimilation rates and concentrations of dissolved free amino acids (DFAA) were followed during diel studies in the eutrophic Lake Mossø, Lake Esrom and Lake øm in spring and summer in 1982. In all three lakes, three to four fold diel variations in concentrations and assimilation rates were measured. These fluctuations appeared to be iindependent of phytoplankton and bacteria production. Pools of DFAA varied from 380 nM (Lake Mossø) to 2430 nM (Lake ørn), with serine, glycine, alanine and ornithine as dominant free amino acids.
2. When similar water samples were incubated in a natural light-dark cycle or in total darkness, different pools of DFAA were measured in light and dark.
3. Decomposition of organic matter or zooplankton activity (rather than e.g. phytoplankton exudates) appear to be responsible for the concentration changes.
4. Observed discrepancies between simultaneous concentration changes and assimilation rates are discussed in relation to the applied tracer procedure and the concentration measurements.
5. Assimilation of DFAA sustained from 6% to 25% of the bacterial carbon requirement, corresponding to 2–12% of the phytoplankton production in the lakes.  相似文献

The seasonal abundance and composition of photosynthetic picoplankton (0.2-2 μm) was compared among five oligotrophic to mesotrophic lakes in Ontario. Epilimnetic picocyanobacteria abundance followed a similar pattern in all lakes; maximum abundance (2-4 × 105 cells · ml−1) occurred in late summer following a period of rapid, often exponential increase after epilimnetic temperatures reached 20 °C. In half of the lakes picocyanobacteria abundance was significantly correlated with temperature, while in other lakes the presence of a small spring peak resulted in a poor correlation with temperature. In all lakes there was a significant correlation between epilimnetic abundance and day of the year. Correlations with water chemistry parameters (soluble reactive phosphorus, total phosphorus, particulate C: P and C: N) were generally weaker or insignificant. However, in the three lakes with the highest spring nitrate concentrations, a significant negative correlation with nitrate was observed. During summer stratification, picocyanobacteria abundance reached a maximum within the metalimnion and at or above the euphotic zone (1% of incident light) in all lakes. These peaks were not related to nutrient gradients. The average total phytoplankton biomass ranged from 0.5 g m−3 (wet weight) in the most oligotrophic lake to 1.4 g m−3 for the most mesotrophic with picoplankton biomass ranging from 0.01 g m−3 to 0.3 g m−3. Picocyanobacteria biomass comprised 1 to 9 % of total phytoplankton biomass in late summer, but in one year for one lake represented a maximum of 56%. Other photosynthetic picoplankton (unidentified eukaryotes, Chlorella spp. Nannochloris spp.), although less abundant (103 cells · ml−1) than picocyanobacteria, represented biomass equal or greater than that of the picocyanobacteria in spring and early summer. On average, half of the photosynthetic picoplankton biomass was eukaryotic in the more coloured lakes, while in the clear lakes less than 20% was eukaryotic. Among the lakes there was a significant positive correlation between the average light extinction coefficient and the proportion of eukaryotic biomass of the picoplankton. In mesotrophic Jack's Lake, the contribution of picoplankton to the maximum photosynthetic rate ranged from 10 to 47% with the highest values in the spring (47%) and late summer (33%), as a result of eukaryotic picoplankton and picocyanobacteria respectively. Picocyanobacteria cell specific growth rates were high during July (0.6-0.8 day−1) and losses were close to 80% of the growth rate. Thus, despite low biomass, photosynthetic picoplankton populations appeared to turn over rapidly and potentially contributed significantly to planktonic food webs in early spring and late summer.  相似文献
