Eleven lakes in the South Island of New Zealand were sampled in summer 1996. Water column profiles of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) at four wavelengths and photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) were obtained, along with analyses of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, total suspended solids (TSS), and catchment vegetation, including forest and natural grassland. Downward attenuation coefficients (K d) and lake water transparency (1/K d) for UVR were examined in relation to these variables. Consistent with other regions of the world, DOC concentration and variables related to DOC were the best predictors of UVR penetration. With our data set, we calculated ratios of water column integrals (RI) of UVR/PAR irradiance, using equations from the literature. At DOC concentrations below 4 g m−3, a progressive increase in RI shows that lakes become increasingly transparent to UVR. We also normalized chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption of UVR at 380 nm (a 380) to DOC concentration and found that the UVR-absorbing capacity per unit DOC increases with increasing percentage of forest in the catchment area. This indicates that not only DOC concentration but also DOC type or composition is important in determining the transparency of lake water to UVR, and that qualitative differences in DOC are dictated by the type and amount of vegetation present in the lake's catchment area. The attenuation of ultraviolet and visible radiation in Dutch inland waters   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The vertical attenuation coefficients (K d) of downward ultraviolet (UV) and visible irradiance (PAR) were measured in 19 different inland waters in the Netherlands using a scanning spectroradiometer. Water chemistry variables such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), absorbance of dissolved matter (a d), chlorophyll-a, and particulate matter were measured to determine the relative contribution of dissolved and particulate components in explaining the variation in K d. In addition to the field measurements, laboratory measurements were performed to test the relationships between water properties and light attenuation. The attenuation properties of Dutch inland waters vary. In most systems the penetration of UV-B radiation (280–320 nm) is limited to the upper decimetres. Lake Maarsseveen was the clearest waterbody in this study, with K dUVB of 9.1 (m–1). The DOC concentration had limited power in predicting UV attenuation in this study (r 2=0.33), because of the large differences in carbon-specific absorption. A d300 was a much better predictor of UV attenuation (r 2=0.75). The relationships obtained in the laboratory experiments can be used to give a good prediction of in situ K d values, based on 3 variables (chlorophyll-a, ash weight, and absorption of dissolved matter).  相似文献

Absorption measurements from chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and their relationships with dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and fluorescence were studied in Lake Taihu, a large, shallow, subtropical lake in China. Absorption spectra of lake water samples were measured from 240 nm to 800 nm. Highest values of a(λ), DOC and F n (355) occurred near the river inflow to Meiliang Bay and decreased towards the central lake basin. A significant spatial difference was found between Meiliang Bay and the central lake basin in absorption coefficient, DOC-specific absorption coefficient, exponential slope coefficient, DOC concentration and fluorescence value. The spatial distribution of CDOM suggested that a major part of CDOM in the lake was from river input. CDOM absorption coefficients were correlated with DOC over the wavelength range 280–500 nm, and a(355) was also correlated with F n (355), which showed that CDOM absorption could be inferred from DOC and fluorescence measurement. The coefficient of variation between a(λ) and DOC concentration decreased with increase in wavelength from 240 nm to 800 nm. Furthermore, a significant negative linear relationship was recorded between S value and CDOM absorption coefficient, as well as DOC-specific absorption coefficient. S value and DOC-specific absorption coefficient were used as a proxy for CDOM composition and source. Accurate CDOM absorption measurements are very useful in explaining UV attenuation and in developing, validating remote sensing model of water quality in Lake Taihu.  相似文献

Hypolimnetic anoxic water of Lake Onogawa was subjected to aeration experiments. When the samples were agitated by magnetic stirrers for 24 h, dissolved oxygen increased from 0 to more than 7.6 mg l−1, dissolved iron decreased from 98% to about 5% of the initial total iron, and from 32% to 48% of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) disappeared. On the other hand, when the anoxic waters were left unstirred, dissolved oxygen increased from 0 to 2.2 mg l−1, dissolved iron decreased from 98% to 31%, and 20% of the DOC disappeared within 48 h. Further 24-h incubation had little effect on the DOC loss, although dissolved oxygen increased to 3.9 mg l−1 and dissolved iron decreased to 5%. These rates of DOC disappearance are too large to be explained by bacterial decomposition. It is quite conceivable that a part of the DOC is coprecipitated with iron(III) precipitates. When Fe(II) in the anoxic hypolimnion is oxidized by autumnal water mixing, probably anoxic water is mixed with aerobic water. The anoxic water must receive oxygen from the aerobic water during this mixing and be simultaneously diluted with the aerobic water. Because the present experimental conditions, especially the stirred one, significantly differ from in situ conditions, the present results are thought to be a potential capacity of DOC coprecipitation.  相似文献

The increase of ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 280–400 nm) caused by stratospheric ozone depletion has profound effects on aquatic ecosystems. High-altitude lakes in the Yunnan Plateau are exposed to high intensities of UVR and contain low concentrations of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Thirty-eight lakes in the Yunnan Plateau with elevations from 1291 to 3809 m above sea level were investigated to study CDOM concentrations and possible effects of UVR on the lake ecosystem. The attenuation of UVR in the Yunnan Plateau lakes was calculated from the absorption coefficient of CDOM based on an empirical relationship from lakes in the Alps and Pyrenees mountains. Absorption coefficients [α(λ)] at 320 nm [α(320)] ranged from 0.52 to 14.05 m−1 (mean ± standard deviation, 4.40 ± 3.85 m−1) and at 380 nm [α(380)] from 0.05 to 4.51 m−1 (1.40 ± 1.30 m−1). The exponential slope coefficient for the relationship of wavelength to α(λ) ranged from 16.2 to 41.4 μm−1 (21.74 ± 4.93 μm−1) over the 280–400 nm interval. Normalized fluorescence emission (NFLU) at 450 nm from an excitation wavelength of 355 nm, F n(355), averaged 7.93 ± 3.22 NFLU. A significant positive relationship was found between α(355) and F n(355). The estimated diffuse attenuation coefficients of UV-B (320 nm) and UV-A (380 nm) ranged from 0.55 to 15.77 m−1 and from 0.24 to 6.73 m−1; the corresponding 1% attenuation depths ranged from 0.29 to 8.44 m and from 0.68 to 19.12 m. Twenty-five of 38 lakes had 1% UV-B attenuation depths of 1.5 m or more. The median 1% attenuation depth was 28.8% of the sampling depth for UV-B radiation and 60% for UV-A. In addition to CDOM, chlorophyll α (Chla) and total suspended matter (TSM) also may contribute to attenuation of UVR.  相似文献

Porewater equilibration samplers were used to obtain porewater inventories of inorganic nutrients (NH4+, NOx, PO43−), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON), sulfate (SO42−), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), chloride (Cl), methane (CH4) and reduced iron (Fe2+) in intertidal creek-bank sediments at eight sites in three estuarine systems over a range of salinities and seasons. Sulfate reduction (SR) rates and sediment particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) were also determined at several of the sites. Four sites in the Okatee River estuary in South Carolina, two sites on Sapelo Island, Georgia and one site in White Oak Creek, Georgia appeared to be relatively pristine. The eighth site in Umbrella Creek, Georgia was directly adjacent to a small residential development employing septic systems to handle household waste. The large data set (>700 porewater profiles) offers an opportunity to assess system-scale patterns of porewater biogeochemical dynamics with an emphasis on DOC and DON distributions. SO42− depletion (SO42−)Dep was used as a proxy for SR, and (SO42−)Dep patterns agreed with measured (35S) patterns of SR. There were significant system-scale correlations between the inorganic products of terminal metabolism (DIC, NH4+ and PO43−) and (SO42−)Dep, and SR appeared to be the dominant terminal carbon oxidation pathway in these sediments. Porewater inventories of DIC and (SO42−)Dep indicate a 2:1 stoichiometry across sites, and the C:N ratio of the organic matter undergoing mineralization was between 7.5 and 10. The data suggest that septic-derived dissolved organic matter with a C:N ratio below 6 fueled microbial metabolism and SR at a site with development in the upland. Seasonality was observed in the porewater inventories, but temperature alone did not adequately describe the patterns of (SO42−)Dep, terminal metabolic products (DIC, NH4+, PO43−), DOC and DON, and SR observed in this study. It appears that production and consumption of labile DOC are tightly coupled in these sediments, and that bulk DOC is likely a recalcitrant pool. Preferential hydrolysis of PON relative to POC when overall organic matter mineralization rates were high appears to drive the observed patterns in POC:PON, DOC:DON and DIC:DIN ratios. These data, along with the weak seasonal patterns of SR and organic and inorganic porewater inventories, suggest that the rate of hydrolysis limits organic matter mineralization in these intertidal creek-bank sediments.  相似文献

Reverse process of the coprecipitation of dissolved organic matter with Fe(III) precipitates in a lake is reported. Water containing a slight amount of dissolved oxygen from the hypolimnion of Lake Onogawa was sealed in glass bottles, and some changes in the constituents with time were followed. The water sample contained 0.1 mg l−1 dissolved oxygen at the beginning of the experiment, which decreased to 0.0 mg l−1 within 24 h. In response to the depletion of dissolved oxygen, there were increases in dissolved Fe from 8.4 to 11.4 mg l−1 and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from 5.1 to 6.9 mg l−1 after 72 h. At the beginning of the experiment, more than 2 mg l−1 of insoluble Fe, which was thought to be Fe(III) precipitates, existed in the water samples. When the water samples became anoxic, the preexisted Fe(III) must have been reduced to soluble Fe(II) over time, resulting in the increase of dissolved Fe. Simultaneous with Fe(III) reduction, coprecipitated DOC with Fe(III) must have been released. The reverse process of the coprecipitation of dissolved organic matter with Fe(III) precipitates found in the present study strongly supports in situ coprecipitation of dissolved organic matter with Fe(III) precipitates. Studies on biogeochemical cycling of carbon in the Chilka Lake, Asia’s largest brackish lagoon on the east coast of India, revealed, for the first time, strong seasonal and spatial variability associated with salinity distribution. The lake was studied twice during May 2005 (premonsoon) and August 2005 (monsoon). It exchanges waters with the sea (Bay of Bengal) and several rivers open into the lake. The lake showed contrasting levels of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and organic carbon (DOC) in different seasons; DIC was higher by ∼22% and DOC was lower by ∼36% in premonsoon than in monsoon due to seasonal variations in their supply from rivers and in situ production/mineralisation. The DIC/DOC ratios in the lake during monsoon were influenced by physical mixing of end member water masses and by intense respiration of organic carbon. A strong relationship between excess DIC and apparent oxygen utilisation showed significant control of biological processes over CO2 production in the lake. Surface partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), calculated using pH–DIC couple according to Cai and Wang (Limnol and Oceanogr 43:657–668, 1998), exhibited discernable gradients during monsoon through northern (1,033–6,522 μatm), central (391–2,573 μatm) and southern (102–718 μatm) lake. The distribution pattern of pCO2 in the lake seems to be governed by pCO2 levels in rivers and their discharge rates, which were several folds higher during monsoon than premonsoon. The net CO2 efflux, based on gas transfer velocity parameterisation of Borges et al. (Limnol and Oceanogr 49(5):1630–1641, 2004), from entire lake during monsoon (141 mmolC m−2 d−1 equivalent to 2.64 GgC d−1 at basin scale) was higher by 44 times than during premonsoon (9.8 mmolC m−2 d−1 ≈ 0.06 GgC d−1). 15% of CO2 efflux from lake in monsoon was contributed by its supply from rivers and the rest was contributed by in situ heterotrophic activity. Based on oxygen and total carbon mass balance, net ecosystem production (NEP) of lake (−308 mmolC m−2 d−1 ≈ −3.77 GgC d−1) was found to be almost in consistent with the total riverine organic carbon trapped in the lake (229 mmolC m−2 d−1 ≈ 2.80 GgC d−1) suggesting that the strong heterotrophy in the lake is mainly responsible for elevated fluxes of CO2 during monsoon. Further, the pelagic net community production represented 92% of NEP and benthic compartment plays only a minor role. This suggests that Chilka lake is an important region in biological transformation of organic carbon to inorganic carbon and its export to the atmosphere.  相似文献

Abstract In acidic mining-impacted lake sediments, the microbial reduction of Fe(III) is the dominant electron-accepting process, whereas the reduction of sulfate seems to be restricted to a narrow sediment zone of elevated pH and lower amounts of total and reactive iron. To evaluate the microbial heterogeneity and the commensal interactions of the microbial community, the flow of supplemental carbon and reductant was evaluated in four different zones of the sediment in anoxic microcosms at the in situ temperature of 12°C. Substrate consumption, product formation, and the potential to reduce Fe(III) and sulfate were similar with both upper and lower sediment zones. In the upper acidic iron-rich sediment zone, the rate of Fe(II) formation 204 nmol ml−1 d−1 was enhanced to 833 nmol ml−1 d−1 and 462 nmol ml−1 d−1 by supplemental glucose and H2, respectively. Supplemental lactate and acetate were not consumed under acidic conditions and decreased the rate of Fe(II) formation to 130 nmol ml−1 d−1 and 52 nmol ml−1 d−1, respectively. When the pH of the upper sediment increased above pH 5, acetate-dependent reduction of sulfate was initiated even though the pool of Fe(III) was not depleted. In deeper sediment zones with elevated pH, the rapid consumption of acetate was always coincident to a decrease in the concentration of sulfate and soluble Fe(II), indicating the formation of Fe(II) sulfides. Although the reduction of Fe(III) was still an ongoing process in deeper sediment zones, the formation of Fe(II) was only slightly enhanced by the consumption of glucose or cellobiose, but not by H2 or acetate. H2-utilizing acetogens seemed to be involved in the consumption of H2. These collective results indicated (i) that the reduction of Fe(III) predominated over the reduction of sulfate as long as the sediment remained acidic and carbon-limited, and (ii) that the sulfate-reducing microbiota in this heterogeneous sediment were better adapted to the geochemical gradients present than were other neutrophilic dissimilatory Fe(III) reducers. High Heterotrophic Bacterial Production in Acidic, Iron-Rich Mining Lakes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The acidic mining lakes of Eastern Germany are characterized by their extremely low pH and high iron concentrations. Low concentrations of CO2 in the epilimnion due to the low pH and reduced light transmission due to dissolved ferric iron potentially limit phytoplankton primary production (PP), whereas dissolved organic carbon (DOC) may promote heterotrophic production of bacteria (HP). We, therefore, tested whether HP exceeds PP in three lakes differing in pH and iron concentration (mean pH 2.3–3.0, 23–500 mg Fe L−1). Bacterial biomass and HP achieved highest values in the most acidic, most iron-rich lake, whereas PP was highest in the least acidic lake. HP was often higher than PP (ratio HP/PP up to 11), indicating that planktonic PP was not the main carbon source for the bacteria. HP was not related to PP and DOC, but HP as well as bacterial biomass increased with decreasing pH. Light stimulated the formation of ferrous iron, changed the DOC composition, and increased the HP in laboratory experiments, suggesting that iron photoreduction caused DOC degradation. This may explain why we found the highest HP in the most acidic and most rich lake. Overall, the importance of bacteria in the cycling of matter and as a basis for the whole food web seemed to increase in more acidic lakes with higher iron concentrations.  相似文献

Interpretation of photosynthetic pigment data using iterative programs such as CHEMTAX are widely used to examine algal community structure in the surface ocean. The accuracy of such programs relies on understanding the effects of environmental parameters on the pigment composition of taxonomically diverse algal groups. Phaeocystis antarctica is an important contributor to total autotrophic production and the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and sulfur in the Southern Ocean. Here we report the results of a laboratory culture experiment in which we examined the effects of ambient dissolved iron concentration on the pigment composition of colonial P. antarctica, using a new P. antarctica strain isolated from the southern Ross Sea in December 2003. Low-iron (<0.2 nM dissolved Fe) filtered Ross Sea seawater was used to prepare the growth media, thus allowing sub-nanomolar iron additions without the use of EDTA to control dissolved iron concentrations. The experiment was conducted at relatively low irradiance (∼20 μE m−2 s−1), with P. antarctica primarily present in the colonial form—conditions that are typical of the southern Ross Sea during austral spring. Relative to the iron-limited control treatments (0.22 nM dissolved Fe), iron addition mediated a decrease in the ratio of 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin to chlorophyll a, and an increase in the ratio of fucoxanthin to chlorophyll a. Our results also suggest that the ratio of 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin to chlorophyll c3 (Hex:Chl c3 ratio) may be a characteristic physiological indicator for the iron-nutritional status of colonial P. antarctica, with higher Hex:Chl c3 ratios (>3) indicative of Fe stress. We also observed that the ratio of fucoxanthin to 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin (Fuco:Hex ratio) was highly correlated (r 2 = 0.82) with initial dissolved Fe concentration, with Fuco:Hex ratios <0.05 measured under iron-limited conditions (dissolved Fe <0.45 nM). Our results corroborate and extend the results of previous experimental studies, and, combined with pigment measurements from the southern Ross Sea, are consistent with the hypothesis that the interconversion of fucoxanthin and 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin by colonial P. antarctica is used as a photo-protective or light-harvesting mechanism, according to the availability of dissolved iron.  相似文献

Biologically diverse coral-reef ecosystems are both directly and indirectly susceptible to changes in the spectral ultraviolet radiation (UVR) distribution. The purpose of this study was to (1) measure the variability of UVR and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) penetration in the water above coral reefs around the Malaysian peninsula, (2) measure the variability and distribution of UVR-specific biogeochemical factors, and (3) determine the impact of biogeochemical variability as it affects the UVR:PAR ratio. Downwelling UVR and PAR irradiance and bio-optically derived biogeochemical factors were measured at 14 coral survey stations around the Malaysian peninsula from August 10–29, 2007. The West Coast was characterized by relatively shallow mean 10% UV-B (320 nm) penetration (1.68 ± 1.12 m), high chlorophyll (3.00 ± 4.72 μg l−1), high chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM; 6.61 ± 3.31 ppb), high particulate organic carbon (POC; 190.65 ± 97.99 mg m−3), and low dissolved organic carbon (DOC; 1.34 ± 0.65 mg m−3). By contrast, the East Coast was characterized by relatively deep mean 10% UV-B penetration (5.03 ± 2.19 m), low chlorophyll (0.34 ± 0.22 μg l−1), low CDOM (1.45 ± 0.44 ppb), low POC (103.21 ± 37.93 mg m−3), and relatively high DOC (1.91 ± 1.03 mg m−3). The UVR:PAR ratio was relatively higher on the East Coast relative to the West Coast, suggesting variable concentrations of UVR-specific absorbing components. At all sites, UVR attenuation coefficients showed significant correlations with CDOM, but were spatially dependent with regard to chlorophyll a, POC, and DOC. The results suggest that bio-optically significant CDOM and DOC factors are uncoupled in coral-reef communities of Malaysia. Furthermore, the results support prior studies that show chromophorically active concentrations of DOM and POC are significantly altering the amount of UVR penetration above coral reefs and may be notable factors in regulating intricate biogeochemical cycles around benthic coral communities in Malaysia.  相似文献

We evaluated (1) the longitudinal pattern of stream chemistry and (2) the effects of the riparian zone on this longitudinal pattern for nitrate (NO3 ), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and total dissolved iron (Fe). We selected two small watersheds; the “southern watershed” had an extending riparian wetland and the “northern watershed” had a narrow riparian area. Stream NO3 concentrations decreased from the spring to outlet of both watersheds. In the southern watershed, stream DOC concentration decreased from the spring to midstream and then increased to the outlet. Stream Fe concentration in the southern watershed longitudinally increased. On the other hand, the northern watershed exhibited no longitudinal pattern for DOC and Fe concentrations. In both watersheds, while NO3 concentrations in the soil and ground water were lower than those in the stream waters, DOC and Fe concentrations exhibited the opposite patterns. The longitudinal decreases of NO3 concentrations in both streams and increase of stream Fe in the southern watershed mainly resulted from the inflow of the soil and ground water to the stream. The decrease in stream DOC from the spring to midstream in the southern watershed was due to the deep groundwater having low DOC, while the subsequent increase to the surrounding soil and ground water. Moreover, considerations of stream solute flow with soil and ground water chemistry suggested other mechanisms adding NO3 and removing/diluting DOC and Fe, especially for the northern watershed; coexistence of oxidizing and reducing conditions in the riparian zone might control the longitudinal concentration change in the stream water chemistry.  相似文献

The effects of nutrient enrichment on the release of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen (DOC and DON, respectively) from the coral Montipora digitata were investigated in the laboratory. Nitrate (NO3 ) and phosphate (PO4 3−) were supplied to the aquarium to get the final concentrations of 10 and 0.5 μmol l−1, respectively, and the corals were incubated for 8 days. The release rate of DON per unit coral surface area significantly decreased after the nutrient enrichment, while the release rate of DOC was constant. Because the chlorophyll a (chl a) content of zooxanthellae per unit surface area increased, the release rate of DOC significantly decreased when normalized to unit chl a. These results suggested that the incorporation of NO3 and PO4 3− stimulated the synthesis of new cellular components in the coral colonies and consequently, reduced extracellular release of DOC and DON. Actually, significant increase in N and P contents relative to C content was observed in the coral’s tissue after the nutrient enrichment. The present study has concluded that inorganic nutrient enrichment not only affects coral-algal metabolism inside the colony but also affects a microbial community around the coral because the organic matter released from corals functions as energy carrier in the coral reef ecosystem.  相似文献

Dynamics of dissolved organic carbon concentration (DOC) and capacity toabsorb light (color) are determined by in-lake and external properties andprocesses. In this study, the influence of external factors such as rainfallandsolar radiation on DOC and color dynamics was assessed for a small forestedlake. DOC and absorption coefficients at 440 nm (a440)ranged 4-fold from 0.46 to 1.62 mM and from 3.4 to 14.8m–1, respectively. DOC and a440 variedsynchronously, but an important percentage of the variability (26%) ina440 was not explained by DOC. The resulting twofold variation inthemolar absorption coefficient of DOC suggested significant seasonal changes inchromophoric content. Both DOC and a440 were positive andsignificantly related to cumulative rainfall. Solar radiation, however, onlyappeared to influence a440 dynamics. This influence was mediated byphotobleaching. Photobleaching coefficients (kb) were higher in falland spring relative to the summer. This seasonal variability in kbvalues was related to monthly rainfall. The influence of photobleaching ona440 dynamics was evaluated by comparing the half life ofa440 in the water column with water residence time (WRT). For thestudy lake, photobleaching contributed notably to a440 dynamicsduring the dry periods when WRT was longer than the a440 half life .DOC dynamics, however, were not related to solar radiation becausephotomineralization was considerably slower than photobleaching.  相似文献

We determined concentrations and fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in precipitation, throughfall, forest floor and mineral soil leachates from June 2004 to May 2006 across an age-sequence (2-, 15-, 30-, and 65-year-old) of white pine (Pinus strobus L.) forests in southern Ontario, Canada. Mean DOC concentration in precipitation, throughfall, leachates of forest floor, Ah-horizon, and of mineral soil at 1 m depth ranged from ∼2 to 7, 9 to 18, 32 to 88, 20 to 66, and 2 to 3 mg DOC L−1, respectively, for all four stands from April (after snowmelt) through December. DOC concentration in forest floor leachates was highest in early summer and positively correlated to stand age, aboveground biomass and forest floor carbon pools. DOC fluxes via precipitation, throughfall, and leaching through forest floor and Ah-horizon between were in the range of ∼1 to 2, 2 to 4, 0.5 to 3.5, and 0.1 to 2 g DOC m−2, respectively. DOC export from the forest ecosystem during that period through infiltration and groundwater discharge was estimated as ∼7, 4, 3, and 2 g DOC m−2 for the 2-, 15-, 30-, and 65-year-old sites, respectively, indicating a decrease with increasing stand age. Laboratory DOC sorption studies showed that the null-point DOC concentration fell from values of 15 to 60 mg DOC L−1 at 0 to 5 cm to <15 mg DOC L−1 at 50 cm. Specific ultraviolet light absorption at 254 nm (SUVA254) increased from precipitation and throughfall to a maximum in forest floor and decreased with mineral soil depth. No age-related pattern was observed for SUVA254 values. DOC concentration in forest floor soil solutions showed a positive exponential relationship with soil temperature, and a negative exponential relationship with soil moisture at all four sites. Understanding the changes and controls of DOC concentrations, chemistry, and fluxes at various stages of forest stand development is necessary to estimate and predict DOC dynamics on a regional landscape level and to evaluate the effect of land-use change.  相似文献

In this study, a neutrophilic, heterotrophic bacterium (strain Paddy-2) that is capable of ferrous iron [Fe(II)] oxidation coupled with nitrate (NO3?) reduction (NRFO) under anoxic conditions was isolated from paddy soil. The molecular identification by 16S rRNA gene sequencing identified the strain as Cupriavidus metallidurans. Strain Paddy-2 reduced 97.7% of NO3?and oxidized 89.7% of Fe(II) over 6?days with initial NaNO3 and FeCl2 concentrations of 9.37?mM and 4.72?mM, respectively. Acetate (5?mM) was also supplied as a carbon source and an alternative electron donor. A poorly crystalline Fe(III) mineral was the main component observed after 15?days of growth in culture, whereas lepidocrocite was detected in the X-ray diffraction spectrum after 3?months of culture. The homologous genes in electron transfer during Fe(II) oxidation (cyc1, cymA, FoxY, FoxZ, and mtoD) were also identified in the genomes of strain Paddy-2 and other reported NRFO bacteria. These genes encoding c-Cyts may play a role in electron transfer during the process of NRFO. These results provide evidence for the potential of NO3? to affect Fe(II) oxidation and biomineralization in bacterium from anoxic paddy soil.  相似文献

Abstract Sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.)-dominated northern hardwood forests of the Great Lakes Region commonly receive elevated levels of atmospheric nitrate (NO3) deposition, which can alter belowground carbon (C) cycling. Past research has demonstrated that chronic experimental NO3 deposition (3 g N m−2 y−1 above ambient) elicits a threefold increase in the leaching loss of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Here, we used DOC collected from tension-cup lysimeters to test whether increased DOC export under experimental NO3 deposition originated from forest floor or mineral soil organic matter (SOM). We used DOC radiocarbon dating to quantify C sources and colorimetric assays to measure DOC aromaticity and soluble polyphenolic content. Our results demonstrated that DOC exports are primarily derived from new C (<50-years-old) in the forest floor under both ambient and experimental NO3 deposition. Experimental NO3 deposition increased soluble polyphenolic content from 25.03 ± 4.26 to 49.19 ± 4.23 μg phenolic C mg DOC−1, and increased total aromatic content as measured by specific UV absorbance. However, increased aromatic compounds represented a small fraction (<10%) of the total observed increased DOC leaching. In combination, these findings suggest that experimental NO3 deposition has altered the production or retention as well as phenolic content of DOC formed in forest floor, however exact mechanisms are uncertain. Further elucidation of the mechanism(s) controlling enhanced DOC leaching is important for understanding long-term responses of Great Lakes forests to anthropogenic N deposition and the consequences of those responses for aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Sunlight penetration through the water column is controlled by the amount and kind of materials dissolved and suspended in the water. Understanding UV penetration in its complexity is essential for the prediction of the impact of UV radiation on aquatic ecosystems. However, only limited data are available on the penetration of UVR into shallow waters rich in inorganic suspended solids and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). The same is true for the specific attenuation coefficients of light-absorbing components at the UV waveband. This study analyses the role of CDOM, algal-free suspended solids and algae in the formation of underwater UVR and PAR climate in 30 water bodies from clear gravel pit lakes trough the shallow Lake Balaton to turbid soda pans. Irradiance-depth profiles were obtained at 305, 313, 320 nm (UV-B), 340, 380, 395 nm (UV-A) and 400–700 nm (PAR) with a Biospherical PUV-2500 radiometer. Vertical attenuation coefficients (K d) were calculated. Water samples were taken for the laboratory measurement of the concentration of light-absorbing components: algae as chlorophyll a (CHL), chromophoric dissolved organic matter as colour (CDOM), and algal-free suspended solids (TSS-Alg) parallel with the in situ light measurements. Specific attenuation coefficient values were calculated by multiple regression analysis (n = 140). The obtained specific UV attenuation coefficient values of CHL, CDOM and TSS-Alg made it possible to establish light attenuation at different wavelengths based on the knowledge of the concentration of these light-absorbing components.  相似文献
