Patterns form with the break of homogeneity and lead to the emergence of new structure or arrangement. There are different physiological and pathological mechanisms that lead to the formation of patterns. Here, we first introduce the basics of pattern formation and their possible biological basis. We then discuss different categories of skin patterns and their potential underlying molecular mechanisms. Some patterns, such as the lines of Blaschko and Naevus, are based on cell lineage and genetic mosaicism. Other patterns, such as regionally specific skin appendages, can be set by distinct combinatorial molecular codes, which in turn may be set by morphogenetic gradients. There are also some patterns, such as the arrangement of hair follicles (hair whorls) and fingerprints, which involve genetics as well as stochastic epigenetic events based on physiochemical principles. Many appendage primordia are laid out in developmental waves. In the adult, some patterns, such as those involving cycling hair follicles, may appear as traveling waves in mice. Since skin appendages can renew themselves in regeneration, their size and shape can still change in the adult via regulation by hormones and the environment. Some lesion patterns are based on pathological changes involving the above processes and can be used as diagnostic criteria in medicine. Understanding the different mechanisms that lead to patterns in the skin will help us appreciate their full significance in morphogenesis and medical research. Much remains to be learned about complex pattern formation, if we are to bridge the gap between molecular biology and organism phenotypes.  相似文献

Transthyretin is a serum and cerebrospinal fluid protein synthesized early in development by the liver, choroid plexus and several other tissues. It is a carrier protein for the antioxidant vitamins, retinol, and thyroid hormones. Transthyretin helps internalize thyroxine and retinol-binding protein into cells by binding to megalin, which is a multi-ligand receptor expressed on the luminal surface of various epithelia. We investigated the expression of transthyretin and its receptor megalin in the human skin; however, their expression pattern in the hair follicle is still to be elucidated. This study addresses this issue and tests the hypothesis that “the expression of transthyretin and megalin undergoes hair follicle cycle-dependent changes.” A total of 50 normal human scalp skin biopsies were examined (healthy females, 53–62 years) using immunofluorescence staining methods and real-time PCR. In each case, 50 hair follicles were analyzed (35, 10, and 5 follicles in anagen, catagen, and telogen, respectively). Transthyretin and megalin were prominently expressed in the human scalp skin and hair follicles, on both gene and protein levels. The concentrations of transthyretin and megalin were 0.12 and 0.03 Ul/ml, respectively, as indicated by PCR. The expression showed hair follicle cycle-associated changes i.e., strong expression during early and mature anagen, very weak expression during catagen and moderate expression during telogen. The expression values of these proteins in the anagen were statistically significantly higher than those of either catagen or telogen hair follicles (P ≤ 0.001). This study provides the first morphologic indication that transthyretin and megalin are variably expressed in the human scalp skin and hair follicles. It also reports variations in the expression of these proteins during hair follicle cycling. The clinical ramifications of these findings are open for further investigations.  相似文献

To characterize the urbanization pattern quantitatively, a study on the mechanisms of the landscape pattern formation could facilitate the understanding on urban landscape patterns and processes, the ecological and socioeconomic consequences of urbanization, as well as the establishment of more effective strategies for landscape management. In this study, we integrated a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based analysis on landscape pattern with an artificial neural network (ANN) to quantitatively characterize the urbanization pattern of the metropolitan area of Shanghai, China, and to establish an ANN model that could preferably simulate the responses of urban landscape pattern to the natural and socioeconomic factors such as residence area, road density, population density, urban development history and the Huangpu River as an element of economic change. Our results showed that the ANN model seems appropriate for studying the nonlinear relationship among the forcing factors of urbanization and the urban landscape patterns, which provided an effective and practical approach for further understanding the mechanisms of the landscape formation pattern and the reciprocal relationship between landscape spatial pattern and ecological process. __________ Translated from Acta Ecologica Sinica, 2005, 25(5): 958–964 [译自: 生态学报, 2005, 25(5): 958–964]  相似文献

Seasonal changes in abundance and distribution pattern of soil micro-arthropods were studied in connection with a few environmental factors in a Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) plantation. The soil arthropods were sampled from three different depths at intervals of two months for two years. Of the collected animals (total 51000–155000 m−2), Collembola (20000–76000 m−2), oribatid mites (19000–55000 m−2) and carnivorous mites (6200–21000 m−2) were the numerically dominant animal groups. Low seasonal variations in abundance indicated their seasonal stability in population levels. The trends in seasonal fluctuation were similar among these groups and between the two years, showing bimodal pattern with little peaks in early summer and winter. The pattern of seasonal fluctuation in abundance of carnivorous mites (P d) was significantly synchronized with that in the total abundance of Collembola and oribatid mites (P τ). Thus, the number-ratios (P d/P τ) were fairly constant, ranging from 0.10 to 0.25. Seasonal changes in vertical distribution of the three animal groups showed a similar pattern for both years. The downward migrations were shown to be more affected by low temperatures in winter accompanied by snow coverage rather than by the desiccation of the surface soil in summer. All the three groups demonstrated as a whole slightly aggregated patterns of horizontal distribution throughout the two years. Temporal increases in the patchiness indices were observed from summer to autumn when the moisture content of the surface soil was low.  相似文献

Small ponds ( ≤ 2 ha) are often a common landscape feature, but their ecology has been less well studied than that of lakes. Studies of some lakes and reservoirs show among-year repeatability in the seasonal abundance of different zooplankton (i.e., succession). For small ponds the seasonal dynamics of zooplankton community structure are relatively unstudied, as are any mechanisms underlying these dynamics. We took a community-level approach to studying the spring–summer abundance of zooplankton in two small Ohio ponds. In particular we wanted to know if repeatable patterns exist for zooplankton community structure in these ponds. We surveyed the spring–summer zooplankton communities in the ponds from 2001 to 2003 and used community-level ordination techniques (i.e., non-metric multidimensional scaling, NMDS) to characterize the assemblages. For both ponds the seasonal pattern of total zooplankton abundance differed significantly among years. We found that the proportional abundance of taxa across the season also varied among years. Elements of the zooplankton community, as described by the NMDS dimensions, showed among-year variation in the spring–summer trajectories that developed. Some of the variation in these zooplankton communities was associated with seasonal changes in water temperature. This among-year variation in the seasonal pattern of zooplankton community structure suggests that community dynamics in these small ponds may not be very repeatable. These complex dynamics of zooplankton thus challenges us to improve our characterization of zooplankton communities in small ponds such that we can better understand the factors that drive the patterns we observe.  相似文献

Microbial eukaryotic community (0.8–20 μm) composition and its seasonal variation were investigated in large, shallow, subtropical Lake Taihu located in Southeast China. The water samples were collected monthly from August 2006 to July 2007 at two sites distantly located in Meiliang Bay and Lake Center, which differed strongly in their trophic status and sediment resuspension. The microbial eukaryotic community compositions (MECC) were measured using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of PCR-amplified eukaryotic 18S rRNA gene fragments. Seasonal variations were related to environmental factors by means of redundancy analysis (RDA) in order to reveal the most important regulating factors. At both sites, the structures and Shannon–Wiener indices of the microbial eukaryotic communities displayed apparent seasonal variations, which were significantly related to environmental variables. There were significant intrahabitat differences in environmental factors regulating MECC, as well as in the seasonal dynamics of the two sites during the study period. At Meiliang Bay, the variations of total phosphorus concentration and cladocera abundance had the most profound impacts on the microbial eukaryotic community composition, while at Lake Center, the total nitrogen concentration and conductivity were most influential. Our results suggest that the DGGE method is a cost-effective way to analyze the seasonal dynamics of MECC and their interaction with environmental variables, which will provide new insights into the diversity and dynamics of MECC.  相似文献

理解植物叶片化学计量特征及其驱动因素对认识植物种群分布规律及预测植物对环境变化响应具有重要意义。该研究采集了青藏高原东缘针叶林84个样点共29种主要针叶树种叶片, 探讨该区域常绿针叶树种叶片碳(C)、氮(N)、磷(P)化学计量特征和分布格局及其驱动因素。结果表明: (1)在科和属水平上, 不同针叶树种叶片C、N含量和C:N差异显著; 叶片N:P < 14, 表明该区域针叶树种主要受N限制。(2)叶片N、P含量在环境梯度上表现出一致的分布规律: 均呈现出随纬度和海拔增加而显著降低, 随年平均气温(MAT)和年降水量(MAP)增加而显著增加的趋势; 而叶片C含量与纬度、海拔、MATMAP均未表现出显著相关性。(3)叶片C:N、C:P呈现出与N、P含量变化相反的分布格局: 均随纬度和海拔增加而显著增加, 随MATMAP增加而显著降低; 而叶片N:P与海拔、MATMAP均无显著相关性。(4)进一步分析表明, 叶片C、N、P含量及其化学计量比的主要驱动因素不尽相同。具体而言: 土壤特性是叶片C含量和N:P变异的主要驱动因子, 而叶片N、P含量和C:N、C:P的变异主要由气候因素决定。总之, 该区域针叶树种叶片化学计量沿环境梯度的变异规律有力地支持了温度生物地球化学假说, 在一定程度上丰富了对环境变化下植物叶片化学计量分布格局及其驱动机制的认识。  相似文献

研究植物群落不同组分生物量的纬度格局及其与生物、非生物因子的定量关系有助于揭示植物对环境的适应性, 能够解释生态系统结构和功能的空间差异性及其成因。该研究在西南干旱河谷跨越9个纬度(23.23°-32.26° N), 布置101个群落 样方(4 m × 6 m)。采用收割法测定群落及组分生物量, 分析生物量在纬度梯度上的变化规律及其影响因子。结果显示, 干旱河谷群落平均生物量为(17.05 ± 1.09) t·hm-2, 其中, 灌木平均生物量为(11.51 ± 1.03) t·hm-2, 占60.2%; 草本平均生物量为(2.11 ± 0.21) t·hm-2, 占15.6%; 凋落物平均生物量为(3.41 ± 0.34) t·hm-2, 占24.1%。群落生物量和灌木生物量随纬度升高而显著增加, 草本生物量随纬度升高无明显变化, 凋落物生物量随纬度的升高而显著降低。随着纬度增加, 灌木生物量的比例明显增大, 草本生物量的比例无明显变化, 凋落物生物量的比例明显降低。灌木优势度及丰富度的变化是驱动干旱河谷植被生物量在纬度梯度上变化的主要内在因子, 而外在因子中, 气候因子对群落及组分生物量的影响显著高于土壤因子。  相似文献

The author's theory of the adoption of certain types of behavior patterns (Rashevsky, N., 1957, “Contributions to the Theory Initiative Behavior”.Bull. Maths. Biophysics,19, 91–119; 1968,Looking at History through Mathematics, Cambridge, Massachusetts: M.I.T. Press) consisting of elementary behaviors for each of which there is an opposite one and the two are mutually exclusive, is applied to describe the changes in the general type of behavior of a society. The elementary acts of which the whole problem consists may be either overt activities or beliefs or opinions. The general behavior patternsadopted by the society are considered as the “proper” or “just” ones. Any deviation from it in either one or more of the component elementary behaviors is considered as “unjust” and is subject to some punitive action. The total number of possible mutually exclusive behavior patterns is very large but finite. Within this very large range of possible patterns, we find that this notion of justice is relative, because changes from any behavior pattern to any other may occur. It is further shown that the amount of punishment for the deviation from the accepted pattern in order to be effective as well as efficient must be applied in different ways to different individuals even for the same transgression.  相似文献

Thermal patterns on the skin are related to skin blood perfusion. While knowledge concerning thermal distribution patterns of the face are well established, the thermal distribution patterns of the skin surface of other aspects of the head has only been investigated once previously in a study employing low resolution thermographic equipment [van Dulken, H., van Voss, S.F.C.H, 1971. The normal thermographic patterns of the human head. Acta Neurochir. 23, 247–58.] The purpose of the study was to re-examine the thermal distribution patterns of the surface of the entire head in 12 healthy bald headed male subjects (mean age 39±7.8 (SD) years) using a high definition infrared (IR) thermographic camera. The thermal distribution patterns were monitored using dynamic infrared thermography (DIRT) before, during and after a 2 min local skin cooling procedure with a pair of fans. Infrared thermal images (thermograms) were taken of the superior, anterior, lateral and posterior aspects of the head. The thermal patterns in general followed the anatomical location of the main superficial arteries and veins of the head as described in anatomy books although there were some variations, especially with regard to the forehead and top of the head (superior aspect), ranging from an asymmetrical distribution pattern to a lack of a clear thermal pattern. The thermal patterns in the left and right lateral thermograms in each individual were relatively symmetrical. During the rewarming period the helix, auricular lobule of the auricles and the nose were relatively cold. The frontal thermograms were characterized by cool nasal and cheek areas and a clear warm area surrounding the eyes, especially around the inner canthus.  相似文献

Elucidation of cellular processes and their changes at the level of protein expression and post-translational modification patterns may allow identification of novel proteins and thereby mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of multigenic diseases. The aim of this study was to test cultured, nontransformed primary fibroblasts derived from human skin biopsies as a suitable model system for proteome analysis. Therefore soluble protein fractions were separated on several overlapping ultrazoom gels covering the pH range from 3.5-9. Correlation analysis of gel-pairs revealed a highly reproducible protein expression pattern within (intra-assay) and between (inter-assay) independent experiments of a single fibroblast cell line (intra-cell line comparison). Spot intensity variations were less than a factor of two for more than 80% of identical spots. In addition, inter-cell line comparison exhibits no significant variations in spot intensities. To achieve further improvements in reproducibility we generated master gels for each pH range by combining averaged spot information derived from two different cell lines each analysed by two independent experiments using the raw master gel algorithm of the Z3 image analysis software. The resulting reference images of primary human fibroblasts provided a basis for investigating regulation by extracellular stimuli and drugs as well as their alterations in patients with different diseases.  相似文献

It is generally assumed that skin vascular resistance contributes only to a small extent to total peripheral resistance and hence to blood pressure (BP). However, little is known about the impact of skin blood flow (SBF) changes on the diurnal variations of BP under ambulatory conditions. The main aim of the study was to determine whether diurnal patterns of distal SBF are related to mean arterial BP (MAP). Twenty-four-hour ambulatory measurements of BP, heart rate (HR) and distal (mean of hands and feet) as well as proximal (mean of sternum and infraclavicular region) skin temperatures were carried out in 51 patients (men/women?=?18/33) during a 2-d eye hospital investigation. The standardized ambulatory protocol allowed measurements with minimal interference from uncontrolled parameters and, hence, some conclusive interpretations. The distal minus proximal skin temperature gradient (DPG) provided a measure for distal SBF. Individual cross-correlation analyses revealed that the diurnal pattern of MAP was nearly a mirror image of DPG and hence of distal SBF. Scheduled lunch and dinner induced an increase in DPG and a decline in MAP, while HR increased. Low daytime DPG (i.e. low distal SBF) levels significantly predicted sleep-induced BP dipping (r?=??.436, p?=?.0014). Preliminary path analysis suggested that outdoor air temperature and atmospheric pressure may act on MAP via changed distal SBF. Changes in distal SBF may contribute to diurnal variation in MAP, including sleep-induced BP dipping and changes related to food intake. This finding might have an impact on individual cardiovascular risk prediction with respect to diurnal, seasonal and weather variations; however, the underlying mechanisms remain to be discovered.  相似文献

To understand the complex drought response mechanism in crop plants, a systematic root proteomics approach was adopted to identify and analyze the expression patterns of differentially expressed major root proteins of Vigna radiata during short-term (3 days) and consecutive long-term water-deficit (6 days) as well as during recovery (6 days after re-watering). Photosynthetic gas exchange parameters of the plant were measured simultaneously during the stress treatment and recovery period. A total of 26 major protein spots were successfully identified by mass spectrometry, which were grouped according to their expression pattern during short-term stress as significantly up-regulated (9), down-regulated (10), highly down-regulated, beyond detection level of the software (2) and unchanged (5). The subsequent changes in the expression patterns of these proteins during long-term stress treatment and recovery period was analyzed to focus on the dynamic regulation of these functionally important proteins during progressive drought and recovery period. Cytoskeleton-related proteins were down-regulated initially (3d) but regained their expression levels during subsequent water-deficit (6d) while glycoprotein like lectins, which were primarily known to be involved in legume–rhizobia symbiosis, maintained their enhanced expression levels during both short and long-term drought treatment indicating their possible role in drought stress response of legumes. Oxidative stress-related proteins including Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase, oxidoreductase and aldehyde reductase were also up-regulated. The analyses of the dynamic regulation of these root proteins during short- and long-term water-deficit as well as recovery period may prove crucial for further understanding of drought response mechanisms in food legumes.  相似文献

物种丰富度的大尺度地理格局及其成因是宏观生态学及生物地理学的中心议题之一。蔷薇属(Rosa L.)植物具有很高的经济价值和生态价值,探讨中国蔷薇属植物的丰富度分布格局及其影响因素可为该属植物资源的保护和合理开发利用乃至其系统进化研究提供重要依据。基于蔷薇属植物在中国的15451条分布数据和11种地理、气候等环境因子进行了物种丰富度分析和相关性分析,研究结果显示:(1)蔷薇属植物在中国分布不均匀。在水平方向上,蔷薇属植物于26.19°—34.29°N带内有较高的物种丰富度,之后随着纬度的增加而降低,且随着经度的增加表现为先增加后减少,于99.10°—108.47°E间存在明显的峰值;在垂直方向上,蔷薇属植物的物种丰富度随海拔的增加表现为先增加后减少,956.46—3518.60m范围内的丰富度最高。西南横断山区为蔷薇属物种分布的中心地区,新疆北部及东北长白山周边地区为局部聚集区。(2)蔷薇属物种丰富度与各能量、水分和生境异质性因子均呈正相关关系,与气候稳定性因子呈负相关关系。表明中国蔷薇属植物在水分和热量条件好、气候季节性变化小且生境异质性程度高的地方,有着更高的物种丰富度。(3)蔷薇属...  相似文献

Based on a 9-month observational study, this paper describes variations in the behavior patterns which young children (6 to 70 months) show when they encounter a male observer (25 years old) for the first time on each observation day at a day care center in Japan. It also presents age differences in the variations. An analysis of these differences reveals: (1) young children of 5 age groups use their head, face, hands and arms differently upon encountering the observer; (2) each age group has 1 distinctive F-C (frequent and common) behavior patterns. The analysis suggests: (1) the acquisition of skills of access behavior is not a simple process; (2) young children rather have a shared cultural knowledge with which they interpret the observer's behavioral and interactional patterns within their cognitive framework. Further research is needed on changes of underlying symbolic meaning in the F-C behavior pattern.  相似文献

Interpretation of landscape patterns from the perspective of different species allows knowing the way in which they perceive landscape, and how their perception varies with scale. We examined distribution of four small mammal species at different scales over a landscape including protected and grazed areas, and associated species distribution with landscape structure. The study was conducted in the central Monte Desert (Reserve of Ñacuñán). Trap grids were set in both areas at two scales, varying their grain and extent. To determine whether spatial patterns are random, clumped or regular, we used a point pattern analysis. Logistic regressions were performed to relate the presence-absence of small mammals to environmental variables. Intensity of the point pattern was not constant, either in the Reserve or the grazed area. Small mammal abundance exhibited a heterogeneous distribution, and the existence of a first-order effect was detected for all species. No second-order effects were detected, the point pattern was random for all species in both areas. Both areas were differently perceived by rodent species. Habitat structure in both conditions and its variations with scale appear to be important factors affecting distribution patterns.  相似文献

During the peak of an extensive heat wave episode on 23–25 July 2007, simultaneous thermophysiological measurements were made in two non-acclimated healthy adults of different sex in a suburban area of Greater Athens, Greece. Based on experimental measurements of mean skin temperature and metabolic heat production, heat fluxes to and from the human body were calculated, and the biometeorological index heat load (HL) produced was determined according to the heat balance equation. Comparing experimental values with those derived from theoretical estimates revealed a great heat stress for both individuals, especially the male, while theoretical values underestimated heat stress. The study also revealed that thermophysiological factors, such as mean skin temperature and metabolic heat production, play an important role in determining heat fluxes patterns in the heat balance equation. The theoretical values of mean skin temperature as derived from an empirical equation may not be appropriate to describe the changes that take place in a non-acclimated individual. Furthermore, the changes in metabolic heat production were significant even for standard activity.  相似文献

Diurnal cycle variations in body-heat loss and heat production, and their resulting core body temperature (CBT), are relatively well investigated; however, little is known about their variations across the menstrual cycle under ambulatory conditions. The main purpose of this study was to determine whether menstrual cycle variations in distal and proximal skin temperatures exhibit similar patterns to those of diurnal variations, with lower internal heat conductance when CBT is high, i.e. during the luteal phase. Furthermore, we tested these relationships in two groups of women, with and without thermal discomfort of cold extremities (TDCE). In total, 19 healthy eumenorrheic women with regular menstrual cycles (28–32 days), 9 with habitual TDCE (ages 29?±?1.5 year; BMI 20.1?±?0.4) and 10 controls without these symptoms (CON: aged 27?±?0.8 year; BMI 22.7?±?0.6; p?<?0.004 different to TDCE) took part in the study. Twenty-eight days continuous ambulatory skin temperature measurements of distal (mean of hands and feet) and proximal (mean of sternum and infraclavicular regions) skin regions, thighs, and calves were carried out under real-life, ambulatory conditions (i-Buttons® skin probes, sampling rate: 2.5?min). The distal minus proximal skin temperature gradient (DPG) provided a valuable measure for heat redistribution from the core to the shell, and, hence, for internal heat conduction. Additionally, basal body temperature was measured sublingually directly after waking up in bed. Mean diurnal amplitudes in skin temperatures increased from proximal to distal skin regions and the 24-h mean values were inversely related. TDCE compared to CON showed significantly lower hand skin temperatures and DPG during daytime. However, menstrual cycle phase did not modify these diurnal patterns, indicating that menstrual and diurnal cycle variations in skin temperatures reveal additive effects. Most striking was the finding that all measured skin temperatures, together with basal body temperature, revealed a similar menstrual cycle variation (independent of BMI), with highest and lowest values during the luteal and follicular phases, respectively. These findings lead to the conclusion that in contrast to diurnal cycle, variations in CBT variation across the menstrual cycle cannot be explained by changes in internal heat conduction under ambulatory conditions. Although no measurements of metabolic heat production were carried out increased metabolic heat generation during the luteal phase seems to be the most plausible explanation for similar body temperature increases.  相似文献

Short-term (daily) and seasonal variations in concentration and flux of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were examined over 15 tidal cycles in a riverine mangrove wetland along Shark River, Florida in 2003. Due to the influence of seasonal rainfall and wind patterns on Shark River’s hydrology, samplings were made to include wet, dry and transitional (Norte) seasons. We used a flume extending from a tidal creek to a basin forest to measure vertical (vegetated soil/water column) and horizontal (mangrove forest/tidal creek) flux of DOC. We found significant (p < 0.05) variations in surface water temperature, salinity, conductivity, pH and mean concentration of DOC with season. Water temperature and salinity followed seasonal patterns of air temperature and rainfall, while mean DOC concentration was highest during the dry season (May), followed by the wet (October) and ‘Norte’ (December) seasons. This pattern of DOC concentration may be due to a combination of litter production and inundation pattern of the wetland. In contrast to daily (between tides) variation in DOC flux between the mangrove forest and tidal creek, daily variations of mean water quality were not significant. However, within-tide variation of DOC flux, dissolved oxygen content and salinity was observed. This indicated that the length of inundation and water source (freshwater vs. saltwater) variation across tidal cycles influenced water quality and DOC flux in the water column. Net DOC export was measured in October and December, suggesting the mangrove forest was a source of DOC to the adjacent tidal creek during these periods. Net annual export of DOC from the fringe mangrove to both the tidal creek and basin mangrove forest was 56 g C m−2 year−1. The seasonal pattern in our flux results indicates that DOC flux from this mangrove forest may be governed by both freshwater discharge and tidal range.  相似文献
