Behavioural and electrophysiological responses of reproductive and non‐reproductive female round gobies Neogobius melanostomus to water previously occupied by male round gobies (reproductive male water) were compared. Reproductive females spent more time than non‐reproductive females in a tank near the input of water conditioned from reproductive males. Also, reproductive females swam significantly faster than non‐reproductive females, suggesting that reproductive male odour may have activated spawning behaviour. Olfactory epithelial field potential measurement (electro‐olfactogram, EOG) showed that reproductive male water was a potent olfactory stimulus to reproductive females, but not to non‐reproductive females. Reproductive females responded significantly more than non‐reproductive females to solid‐phase (octadecylsilane) extracts of reproductive male water. Also, when these extracts were separated on reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), reproductive females showed noticeably greater responses than non‐reproductive females to the fractions that eluted between 30 and 40 min. The behavioural data support the hypothesis that reproductive male round gobies release compounds into the water that attract potential mates. The EOG data indicate that these compounds can be quantitatively extracted from the water and be partially purified by HPLC. The evidence is not sufficient to indicate whether or not the compounds are steroids. The relatively early elution time on HPLC, however, suggests that if these compounds are steroids, then it is more likely that they will be conjugated rather than free steroids.  相似文献

Size‐dependent reproductive success of wild zebrafish Danio rerio was studied under controlled conditions in the laboratory to further understand the influence of spawner body size on reproductive output and egg and larval traits. Three different spawner size categories attained by size‐selective harvesting of the F1‐offspring of wild D. rerio were established and their reproductive performance compared during a 5 day period. As to be expected, large females spawned more frequently and had significantly greater clutch sizes than small females. Contrary to expectations, small females produced larger eggs when measured as egg diameter with similar amounts of yolk compared to eggs spawned by large spawners. Eggs from small fish, however, suffered from higher egg mortality than the eggs of large individuals. Embryos from small‐sized spawners also hatched later than offspring from eggs laid by large females. Larval standard length (LS)‐at‐hatch did not differ between the size categories, but the offspring of the large fish had significantly larger area‐at‐hatch and greater yolk‐sac volume indicating better condition. Offspring growth rates were generally similar between offspring from all size categories, but they were significantly higher for offspring spawned by small females in terms of LS between days 60 and 90 post‐fertilization. Despite temporarily higher growth rates among the small fish offspring, the smaller energy reserves at hatching translated into lower condition later in ontogeny. It appeared that the influence of spawner body size on egg and larval traits was relatively pronounced early in development and seemed to remain in terms of condition, but not in growth, after the onset of exogenous feeding. Further studies are needed to explore the mechanisms behind the differences in offspring quality between large‐ and small‐sized spawners by disentangling size‐dependent maternal and paternal effects on reproductive variables in D. rerio.  相似文献

The spawning behaviour of male nest guarding sunbleak Leucaspius delineatus , a recent invasive species in southern England, was studied and quantified for the first time. In the absence of physical differences between territorial and non‐territorial males ( i.e . colour, size, etc .), the reproductive behaviour of territorial males was analysed and related to reproductive success. The results showed that females preferred high‐courting and highly aggressive males. The initial cue in female mate choice, however, was based on courtship, while aggression was the decisive behavioural trait in influencing mate choice, providing a direct signal of physical condition and 'paternal competence'. Some males picked nest sites which were subsequently preferred by other males taking over the nest of a previous male ('communal nest'), with the new territorial male adopting the eggs already present at the nest. It appears that either due to female preference for nests already containing eggs or lower rates of sired egg predation by dilution among unrelated eggs, sunbleak males have adopted the mating strategy of allopaternal care.  相似文献

The behavioural responses of reproductive and non‐reproductive female round gobies Neogobius melanostomus to water conditioned by reproductive and non‐reproductive males and females were tested. The behavioural responses of reproductive female round gobies exposed to odour of reproductive males included increased time spent near the source of the odour, elevated swimming velocities and directed movement to and around the odour source when compared with their responses to control water. These results suggested that pheromones released from reproductive males may induce spawning behaviour in reproductive females. Non‐reproductive females exposed to reproductive female odour spent significantly more time near the odour source of reproductive females compared with control water. Non‐reproductive females also showed directed movement towards and around the odour source when exposed to reproductive female odour. These results suggested that round gobies use inter‐sexual and intra‐sexual pheromones and that both sex and reproductive status are important in the detection and release of these pheromones.  相似文献

The winter flounder is an in‐shore flatfish living in shallow waters on the east coast of North America from Labrador to Georgia. In the St Lawrence estuary, the reproductive season is May and June. Our objective was to test the effects of winter‐spring photoperiod and temperature conditions on the timing of sexual maturation in both males and females. Groups (16 animals each) of winter flounder breeders were maintained from mid‐January to mid‐May under five different experimental conditions: (1) natural photoperiod and temperature conditions; (2) natural photoperiod, 6° C; (3) 15L : 9D, natural temperature conditions; (4) 15L : 9D, 6° C; (5) accelerated photoperiod increase from winter to spring conditions, 6° C. Natural photoperiod and temperature conditions correspond to a gradual increase in light period from 8L : 16D (January) to 15L : 9D (May) and in temperature from −1° C (January to April) to 6° C (May). GSI and condition factor did not differ among the treatments ( P  > 0·05). In males, milt production occurred simultaneously in the different treatments and histological examination did not indicate any significant effect of either photoperiod or temperature on testes development. In females, seven stages of oocyte development were observed. Both the number of oocytes at the cortical alveoli stage and number of atretic oocytes increased at 6° C (warm temperature conditions). Overall, neither photoperiod nor temperature modified the reproductive period. Warm winter‐spring temperature conditions, however, may decrease egg numbers and egg quality.  相似文献

In primates, the relationship between the ranks of parents and those of their sons has not been studied systematically, yet it has important implications for sociobiological theories. The influence of parents' ranks upon the ranks and reproductive success of their sons who remain and breed within their natal group was tested in two captive groups of rhesus macaques, Macaca mulatta. Paternity exclusion analyses revealed that both the rank and reproductive success of natal males were strongly associated with their mothers', but not their fathers', ranks. The ranks of natal males were also significantly correlated with their own reproductive success. However, this correlation was not nearly as strong as the correlation between the ranks and reproductive success of the fathers of these natal males. This difference was associated with a decline in reproductive success, but not in rank, of some founding males after natal males reached sexual maturity, and might result from an age bias in mating and/or the increase in the ratio of adult males to females. Although the reproductive advantage enjoyed by sons of high-ranking mothers prior to dispersal from their natal groups might be of evolutionary significance, it is important to determine whether or not this advantage persists after dispersal.  相似文献

Life history traits of an invasive population of bighead goby Neogobius kesslerei (Günther, 1861) from the middle Danube, including absolute and relative fecundity, egg size, number of spawning batches and size at first maturation, were examined and evaluated within an epigenetic context. Ripe bighead goby females attained 42.8–142.5 mm L S, with absolute fecundities ranging from 669 to 5646 eggs (mean 2109 eggs), and relative fecundities of 61.6–174.0 eggs g−1 body weight (mean 119.6 eggs). Egg diameters varied between 0.04 mm and 1.70 mm (mean = 0.57 mm). In the pre-spawning period there was no clear size distinction in eggs (0.12–1.45 mm; mean = 0.52 mm) in 34.1% of females; whereas in 65.9% of females, two egg size groups were distinguished: group I diameters of 0.06–0.85 mm (mean = 0.43 mm), and group II diameters of 0.55–1.70 mm (mean = 1.17 mm). Females with size-group II eggs at the beginning of the reproductive season were assumed to be ready to spawn and the others to be subsequent spawners. Bighead goby appears to be altricial compared to the round goby, although in both species a shift from highly precocial towards a less precocial life history was observed. These differences, affected by epigenetic mechanisms and resulting in alternative ontogenies, may have important implications for a species' potential success in novel environments, favouring the round goby over short time periods (several years) and bighead goby over longer periods of time (decades and longer).  相似文献

The first evidence for female‐biased migration in a partially migratory stream‐dwelling salmonid the Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma , a phenomenon well known in sea‐run and lake‐run populations, is presented. Dolly Varden in the Shiisorapuchi River in central Hokkaido, Japan, used both tributaries, of which there are many, and the main stem, but spawned only in tributaries. The size structures of Dolly Varden (≥age 1 + years) in tributaries were unimodal (<100 mm fork length, L F) during non‐spawning seasons but changed to bimodal during spawning seasons (lower mode <110 mm, upper mode >120 mm L F). Mature individuals were observed in both modal groups. From the trapping and census data, the small group appeared to be tributary resident and the large group main stem migrant. Males were common in both resident and migrant components. Most females, however, migrated to the main stem to mature, indicating female‐biased migration.  相似文献

The lifetime success and performance characteristics of communally reared offspring of wild native Burrishoole (native), ranched native (ranched) and non‐native (non‐native) Atlantic salmon Salmo salar from the adjacent Owenmore River were compared. Non‐native 0+ year parr showed a substantial downstream migration, which was not shown by native and ranched parr. This appears to have been an active migration rather than competitive displacement and may reflect an adaptation to environmental or physiographic conditions within the Owenmore River catchment where the main nursery habitat is downstream of the spawning area. There were no differences between native and ranched in smolt output or adult return. Both of these measures, however, were significantly lower for the non‐native group. A greater proportion of the non‐native Atlantic salmon was taken in the coastal drift nets compared to the return to the Burrishoole system, probably as a result of the greater size of the non‐native fish. The overall lifetime success of the non‐native group, from fertilized egg to returning adult, was some 35% of native and ranched. The ranched group showed a significantly greater male parr maturity, a greater proportion of 1+ year smolts, and differences in sex ratio and timing of freshwater entry of returning adults compared to native, which may have fitness implications under specific conditions.  相似文献

Discriminant function analysis was used to distinguish morphologically between samples of parr, smolts and adult Atlantic salmon Salmo salar from several hatchery and river systems in Ireland. The effect of habitat shift was investigated in Atlantic salmon parr. Parr grown from the eyed‐egg stage with a non‐sibling group in a hatchery environment, came to resemble the mean body shape of their host hatchery Atlantic salmon stock more closely than that of a full sibling group grown at their natal hatchery. Wild Atlantic salmon smolts differed in shape from hatchery‐reared smolts. This difference was less pronounced, but still statistically significant when wild adults were compared with hatchery‐reared adults captured in the coastal drift‐net fishery after a year spent at sea. Rearing conditions had a significant impact on the production and growth of fish body shape. This in turn may have affected adaptability and survivorship of ranched Atlantic salmon in the marine environment.  相似文献

The effect of cortisol administration on reproductive performance was investigated in channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus broodfish. Cortisol was added to a commercial catfish feed by dissolving in ethanol and spraying the feed to yield a dietary concentration of 150 mg kg−1 feed. The cortisol diet and the control (no cortisol) diet were offered at a rate of 1% of biomass to three replicate ponds each containing 28 female and 14 male broodfish, respectively, three times per week for 11 weeks. Spawning began 10 days after the start of the experiment, and continued for 10 weeks. In fish fed cortisol, body mass and the hepato‐somatic index were reduced ( P  ≤ 0·02) and concentrations of plasma cortisol and glucose were significantly higher ( P  ≤ 0·0003) compared to those of controls. The relative frequency of spawning was similar between the two treatments; however, cortisol‐fed channel catfish had an average of 47·1% more spawns than the control‐fed fish. On average, there were 25·5 spawns per pond in the treated groups compared to 12·3 spawns per control pond ( P  = 0·10). No effect was observed on egg production, with individual egg mass, fecundity, and hatching success being similar ( P  ≥ 0·27) for both treatments. Despite the observed negative effects of cortisol on somatic and hepatic growth, the increased reproductive output coupled with no observable effects on the eggs or hatching success demonstrates that cortisol does not suppress channel catfish reproduction.  相似文献

The fertilization mode, and spawning and egg‐care behaviours of the sculpin Radulinopsis taranetzi were investigated in the laboratory. Embryonic development began only after the eggs came into contact with sea water. Females spawned c . 1000 eggs and covered them with sand using their pectoral and caudal fins. Unlike other cottids, the females guarded the egg masses after spawning. During the parental period, the supramaxillary lamina and mandibular lamina of females extended to form a disc‐like structure, which was used to 'suck' water from near the surface of the egg mass. The frequency and duration of this 'sucking' behaviour increased gradually until hatching, which occurred after 23–26 days at 8° C. The oxygen consumption of the embryos was positively related to the 'sucking' activity. All females in this study spawned only once during the spawning season, in contrast with the paternal‐care copulating cottids, which are multiple spawners.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were infected with sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis (0·08 ± 0·007 sea lice g−1) over a period of 4 h. Both infected and non‐infected fish were swim tested in sea water (SW) and fresh water (FW). The ventral aorta of each fish was fitted with a Doppler cuff in order to measure cardiac output, stroke volume and heart rate during swim testing. Blood samples were taken at rest and after exercise. Critical swimming speed of infected fish in SW (2·14 ± 0·08 body lengths, bl s−1) was significantly lower ( P  < 0·05) than infected fish switched to FW (2·81 ± 0·08 bl s−1) and non‐infected fish in SW (2·42 ± 0·04 bl s−1) and FW (2·61 ± 0·08 bl s−1). Cardiac and blood results indicated infected fish exposed to FW did experience stress, but relief from osmotic and ionic distress probably reduces energy expenditure, allowing the increase in performance. As the performance of sea lice‐infected fish improved upon transfer to FW, it is likely that heavily infected salmonids do return to FW to restore compromised osmotic and ionic balance, and remove sea lice in the process.  相似文献

Longfinned eels Anguilla reinhardtii were captured by both fishery‐dependent and independent sampling methods from three rivers in New South Wales, south‐eastern Australia. Sex ratios, catch per unit effort and population age and total length structure were examined in three zones (fresh water and upper and lower tidal) in the Hacking, Hawkesbury and Clarence Rivers. Females were found in relatively high proportions in all zones, ranging from 97% in a freshwater (non‐tidal) site down to 59% in a tidal site. Males were found primarily in tidal zones (only two of the 677 longfinned eels caught in non‐tidal fresh water were males), with the greatest proportions being found in the brackish upper tidal areas. The mean number of fish captured per trap was higher in the fresh water and upper tidal zones than in the lower tidal zones. The mean ±  s . e . age, 17·9 ± 0·3 years, and age range, 5–52 years for females were significantly higher than those of males 12·2 ± 0·4 years; range 5–22 years, which is typical of other anguillid species. Longfinned eels captured in fresh water were found be significantly larger and older than those in tidal zones due to the almost exclusive predominance of females.  相似文献

The self‐feeding rhythms of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and white‐spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis were studied when group‐held fishes ( n  = 10 per group) were fed using self‐feeders under two different light intensities (50 lx, 16 μW cm−2 and 700 lx, 215 μW cm−2) during the light phase of the light‐dark cycle. Food wastage was also measured. At 50 lx, all groups of rainbow trout learned to operate the self‐feeder within 4 days, whereas it took up to 25 days for all groups at 700 lx. In contrast, all groups of white‐spotted charr learned self‐feeding within 17 days, irrespective of light intensity. These results, although non‐significant, suggest that lower light intensities can stimulate instrumental learning in rainbow trout, but not white‐spotted charr. In rainbow trout, the total number of trigger actuations for the entire experimental period was significantly higher at 50 rather than 700 lx, although this may have been related to delayed learning at 700 lx. There was no significant effect in white‐spotted charr. Growth rate (assessed using the thermal growth coefficient) was also higher in rainbow trout but not white‐spotted charr at 50 rather than 700 lx, although this difference was non‐significant. Light intensity had no significant effect on food wastage in either rainbow trout or white‐spotted charr, and it did not appear to affect the proportion of trigger actuations during the light phase. Clear diurnal feeding rhythms were observed in both species and these were classified into four categories: uniform, dawn, dusk and crepuscular. At 50 lx, fish from both species generally fed in temporally localized periods at either dawn and dusk, whilst feeding was predominantly uniform during the light phase at 700 lx.  相似文献

The 30 year time series analyses revealed large temporal variation in the return rates and a recent increase in abundance of previous spawning Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the River Teno, northern Scandinavia. The mean proportion of repeat spawners was 7 and 4% in the total Atlantic salmon catch and 9 and 22% in multi‐sea‐winter (MSW) catch component for females and males, respectively. Previous spawners constituted on the average 7% of the catch in mass but up to 20%(31 t) and 30%(19 t) in 2003 and in 2004, respectively. In 1975–2000, the proportion of previous spawners varied between 1 and 6%(3–12% of MSW Atlantic salmon), whereas in 2001–2004, they accounted for 8–21%(16–35% of MSW Atlantic salmon) of the total Atlantic salmon catch. The number of previous spawners in the catch correlated significantly with the preceding numbers of respective 1–3 sea‐winter (SW) maiden Atlantic salmon 2 years earlier. The recent increase in the numbers of 1S1 and 2S1 (1 or 2 years at sea followed by first spawning and 1 year reconditioning period at sea) alternate spawning Atlantic salmon was a consequence of higher numbers of maiden 1SW and 2SW Atlantic salmon in the catches and increased sea temperatures. Similarly, the return rate of 1SW Atlantic salmon to second spawning has improved in recent years. Most previous spawners ascended and were captured early in the fishing season. The smolt and sea‐age combinations of repeat spawners comprised 68 age groups contributing with the annual mean of 15 age groups to the great diversity of the River Teno Atlantic salmon population complex.  相似文献

Female‐specific markers of reproductive activity [plasma 17β‐oestradiol (E2), vitellogenin (VTG) and alkali‐labile phosphoprotein phosphorous (ALP)] were measured over 12 months in a captive population of brown trout Salmo trutta . During the early months of the reproductive season (February to May) and using the concentration of plasma E2 or plasma ALP as a marker for females the proportion of fish in which sex was misidentified was high (15–50%). The misidentification rate was considerably lower (1–8%) using plasma VTG. Preliminary evaluation of a commercial immunochromatographic VTG test system as a screen for the presence or absence of VTG in plasma from brown trout provided results that were consistent with those obtained from direct measurement of plasma VTG levels by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). These preliminary conclusions were verified by sampling upstream‐migrating anadromous brown trout, sea trout, and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar trapped over a 6 month period. Plasma E2 levels did not satisfactorily discriminate between male and female sea trout and Atlantic salmon. Plasma VTG levels in both species, however, were bimodally distributed and it was assumed that this divergence corresponded to male (plasma VTG levels <10 μg ml−1) and female (plasma VTG levels >800 μg ml−1) fishes. Plasma ALP provided a more accurate indication of sex in the wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout than was suggested by the pilot study on captive brown trout. The commercial immunochromatographic VTG test system provided results that were wholly consistent with the data obtained from the trapped fishes by direct measurement of plasma VTG.  相似文献

The hypothesis tested was that Saguinus oedipus oedipus females housed with adult males would mature, sexually, at an earlier age than females remaining in their natal family groups. Six females were housed with strange, unrelated males. Five females remained in their natal groups. Blood samples were taken twice weekly, and the plasma was assayed for progesterone. Sexual maturation was operationally defined as that age at which plasma progesterone levels became consistently detectable. Females housing with males did mature at an earlier age than females remaining in their natal groups. In addition, it was noted that the presence or absence of a healthy, reproductive mother in the natal group was not related to the daughter's maturation age. However, whether the natal group, as a whole, inhibited maturation of young females, or an unrelated male accelerated maturation, or both, remains unknown.  相似文献

Reproductive ecology of the river lamprey   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The reproductive ecology of river lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis was investigated during the spawning period 2003 in the River Derwent, north‐east England. Over this period 1199 ± 104 individuals day−1(mean ±  s . d .) were counted on one spawning site (area c . 450 m2), but mark‐recapture estimates suggested that >5000 river lamprey used this site over the same period and egg deposition was estimated as 168 000 eggs m−2. The operational sex ratio of river lamprey in spawning clusters changed between spawning phases, from domination by females during the nest‐building phase (male : female ratio, 1 : 3·46), to a preponderance of males during the spawning phase (male : female, 1 : 0·37), followed by a return to a majority of females after spawning (male : female, 1 : 3·74). Recapture data showed that >97% of recaptured, tagged males were recorded at two or more nests, whereas almost 50% of recaptured, tagged females were recorded at the same nest, suggesting a promiscuous mating system, with a tendency towards polygyny within the population. Within the lower 80 km of the River Derwent and its tributaries, evidence of river lamprey spawning was found at only six sites, and most spawning (>80% of the observed spawning population) was at one site.  相似文献

To explore whether selection for testosterone-mediated traits in males might be constrained by costs of higher testosterone to females, we examined the effects of experimental elevation of plasma testosterone on physiological, reproductive, and behavioral parameters in a female songbird, the dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis). We used subcutaneous implants to elevate testosterone (T) in captive and free-living female juncos. In captive birds, we measured the effects of high T on body mass, feather molt, and brood patch formation. In the field, we monitored its effects on the timing of egg laying, clutch size, egg size, egg steroid levels, incubation, and nest-defense behavior. Females implanted with testosterone (T-females) had significantly higher circulating levels of testosterone than did control females (C-females). Captive T-females had lower body mass, were less likely to develop brood patches, and delayed feather molt relative to C-females. Among free-living females, the interval between nest completion and appearance of the first egg was longer for T-females than for C-females and egg yolk concentrations of testosterone were higher, but there were no significant differences in estradiol levels, clutch size, or egg size. Incubation and nest defense behavior were also similar between T- and C-females. Our results suggest that selection on males for higher testosterone might initially lead to a correlated response in females producing changes in body mass and feather molt, both of which could be detrimental. Other possible female responses would be delayed onset of reproduction, which might reduce reproductive success, and higher yolk testosterone, which might have either positive or negative effects on offspring development. We found no reason to expect reduced parental behavior by females as a negative fitness consequence of selection for higher testosterone in males.  相似文献
