Photosynthesis and respiration by the epilithic community on cobble in an arctic tundra stream, were estimated from oxygen production and consumption in short-term (4–12 h), light and dark, chamber incubations. Chlorophyll a was estimated at the end of each incubation by quantitatively removing the epilithon from the cobble. Fertilization of the river with phosphate alone moderately increased epilithic chlorophyll a, photosynthesis, and respiration. Fertilization with ammonium sulfate and phosphate, together, greatly increased each of these variables. Generally, under both control and fertilized conditions, epilithic chlorophyll a concentrations (mg m−2), photosynthesis, and respiration (mg O2 m−2, h−1) were higher in pools than in riffles. Under all conditions, the P/R ratio was consistent at ∼ 1.8 to 2.0. The vigor of epilithic algae in riffles, estimated from assimilation coefficients (mg O2 [mg Chl a]−1 h−1) was greater than the vigor of epilithic algae in pools. However, due to the greater accumulation of epilithic chlorophyll a in pools, total production (and respiration) in pools exceeded that in riffles. The epilithic community removed both ammonium and nitrate from water in chambers. Epilithic material, scoured by high discharge in response to storm events and suspended in the water column, removed ammonium and may have increased nitrate concentrations in bulk river water. However, these changes were small compared to the changes exerted by attached epilithon.  相似文献

During January 1989, phytoplankton biomass and species composition were studied in a north / south transect at the Weddell / Scotia Confluence (47°W), between 57° and 61°30′S. Results showed a diatom bloom in the Scotia Sea (chlorophyll a 1.9 μg l−1, particulate organic carbon 239 μg l−1), dominated by Fragilariopsis cylindrus, Dactyliosolen antarcticus and Chaetoceros dichaeta. Low chlorophyll a / phaeopigments ratios (about 1.4) and silicate concentrations (15 μmol l−1) suggested that this was an advanced bloom phase, probably linked to high grazing pressure. Minimum chlorophyll a values of 0.1–0.2 μg l−1 and particulate organic carbon 46 μg l−1 were found at the Weddell / Scotia Front and in a subsurface layer of the Weddell Sea Water. In the southern part of the transect (61°30′S), in the Weddell Sea, a second surface maximum was found (chlorophyll a 0.9 μg l−1, particulate organic carbon 120 μg l−1), but with a different species composition, with Cryptomonas sp. dominant. Our results show a succession within the diatom community in the Weddell / Scotia Confluence Waters when comparing the three EPOS legs. In the Weddell Sea from spring to summer, nanoflagellates, with only a minor contribution from diatoms, persist over a long period with little change in the community structure. We suggest that the frontal system, together with the receding ice edge and the grazing pressure of either krill or protozooplankton, are mainly responsible for the phytoplankton distribution patterns found. The feeding dynamics and oxygen uptake of the bottom-dwelling caridean shrimp Nauticaris marionis were studied during the April/May 1984, 1996 and 1997 cruises to Marion Island (Prince Edward Islands, Southern Ocean). N. marionis is thought to have an opportunistic feeding mode. Prey composition varied considerably between the years and sites investigated. Overall, benthic (mainly hydrozoans and bottom-dwelling polychaetes) and, at times, pelagic (largely euphausiids and copepods) prey items dominated in the stomachs of N. marionis both by occurrence and by volume. Generally, pelagic prey contributed more to the diets of smaller shrimps, while benthic prey was a more important component in the guts of larger specimens. Wet, dry and ash-free dry weight were determined for specimens used in respiration experiments. The respiration rates of N. marionis females with carapace length 6.6–11.1 mm ranged from 80 to 250 μl O2 individual−1 · h−1, or from 0.588 to 2.756 μl O2 · mg−1 dry weight h−1. Regression analyses showed highly significant correlations between oxygen consumption and carapace length for N. marionis. Daily ingestion rates estimated using an in situ gut content analysis technique (4.4% of body dry weight) and an energy budget approach (average 4.7% of body dry weight, range 2.0–7.5%) showed good agreement with each other. Cyanobacteria were a major constituent of phototrophic communities in the lakes, ponds and streams of Bylot Island, in the Canadian high Arctic. The waters spanned a range of temperatures (1.8–16.8°C in late July), pH regimes (6.2–9.2) and conductivities (1.5–1700 μS cm−1) but nutrient concentrations were consistently low (< 1 μg dissolved reactive P l−1 at all sites; < 10 μg NO3-N l−1 at most sites). Picoplanktonic species (Synechococcus spp.) were often the numerical dominants in the plankton, and periphytic filamentous species (Oscillatoriaceae) commonly formed thick (5–50 mm) benthic mats. Bloom-forming species of cyanobacteria were either absent or poorly represented even in Chla-rich ponds. The total community biomass ranged from 0.1 to 29.8 μg Chla l−1 in the plankton and from 1.1 to 34.8 μg Chla cm−2 in the benthos. The in vivo absorbance characteristics of isolates from these environments indicated a genetically diverse range of species in each group of Arctic cyanobacteria. Growth versus irradiance relationships were determined for each of the isolates and similarly revealed large genetic differences (maximum growth rates from 0.17 to 0.61 day−1), even between morphologically identical taxa. A comparison of nutrients, pigment concentrations and species composition underscores the strong similarities between freshwater ecosystems in the north and south polar zones. Periphyton (epilithon) gross primary production (GPP) was estimated using the DCMU-fluorescence method in the Yenisei River. In the unshaded littoral zone, chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) and GPP value varied from 0.83 to 973.74 mg m−2and 2–304,425 O2 m−2 day−1 (0.64–95 133 mg C m−2 day−1), respectively. Positive significant correlation (r = 0.8) between daily GPP and periphyton Chl a was found. Average ratio GPP:Chl a for periphyton was 36.36 mg C mg Chl a m−2 day−1. The obtained GPP values for the Yenisei River have a high significant correlation with values predicted by a conventional empirical model for stream periphyton. We concluded that the DCMU-fluorescence method can be successfully used for measuring of gross primary production of stream phytoperiphyton at least as another useful tool for such studies.  相似文献

The effect of light intensity (50–300 μmol photons m−2 s−1) and temperature (15–50°C) on chlorophyll a, carotenoid and phycobiliprotein content in Arthronema africanum biomass was studied. Maximum growth rate was measured at 300 μmol photons m−2 s−1 and 36°C after 96 h of cultivation. The chlorophyll a content increased along with the increase in light intensity and temperature and reached 2.4% of dry weight at 150 μmol photons m−2 s−1 and 36°C, but it decreased at higher temperatures. The level of carotenoids did not change significantly under temperature changes at illumination of 50 and 100 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Carotenoids were about 1% of the dry weight at higher light intensities: 150 and 300 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Arthronema africanum contained C-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin but no phycoerythrin. The total phycobiliprotein content was extremely high, more than 30% of the dry algal biomass, thus the cyanobacterium could be deemed an alternative producer of C-phycocyanin. A highest total of phycobiliproteins was reached at light intensity of 150 μmol photons m−2 s−1 and temperature of 36°C, C-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin amounting, respectively, to 23% and 12% of the dry algal biomass. Extremely low (<15°C) and high temperatures (>47°C) decreased phycobiliprotein content regardless of light intensity.  相似文献

Chlorophyll-a (chl-a) and carotenoid pigments of the zooxanthellate octocoral Sinularia flexibilis were analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography following exposure to three light intensities for over 30 days. From the coral fragments located at different light intensities, a total carotenoid of >41 μg g−1 dry weight, including peridinin, xanthophylls (likely diadinoxanthin + diatoxanthin), and chl-a as the most abundant pigments, with minor contents of astaxantin and β-carotene were detected. The whole content of chl-a weighed 5 μg g−1 dry weight in all coral colonies. Chl-a and carotenoids contributed 11.2% and 88.2%, respectively, to all pigments detected, and together accounted for 99.4% of the total pigments present. The highest contents of carotenoids and chl-a was observed in the coral grafts placed in an irradiance of 100 μmol quanta m−2 s−1; they showed lower ratios of total carotenoids: chl-a compared to those exposed to 400 μmol quanta m−2 s−1 after >30 days of incubation. The ratios of peridinin and xanthophylls with respect to chl-a from the colonies at 400 μmol quanta m−2 s−1 were approximately double those observed at irradiances of 100 and 200 μmol quanta m−2 s−1. Partial quantification of pigments in this study showed that the carotenoids of S. flexibilis showed a decrease at irradiances above 100 μmol quanta m−2 s−1, with the exception of an increase in β-carotene at 200 μmol quanta m−2 s−1.  相似文献

An infiltration community was the dominating ice algal community in pack-ice off Queen Maud Land, Southern Ocean, in January 1993. The community was dominated by autotrophic processes, and the most common species were the prymnesiophyte Phaeocystis antarctica and the diatoms Chaetoceros neglectus and Fragilariopsis cylindrus. The concentration of chlorophyll a was 1.3–47.9 μg l−1, and the inner part of the community was nitrate depleted. Uptake rates of nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, urea and amino acids were measured using 15N. Nitrate was the major nitrogen source for ice algal growth (67 ± 6% nitrate uptake). It is suggested that % nitrate uptake in the infiltration community decreases during the growth season, from 92% during spring (literature data) to 67% during summer. Scalar irradiance in the infiltration community was high and variable. It reached ca. 2000 μmol m−2 s−1 at some locations, and nitrate uptake rate was potentially photoinhibited at irradiances >500 μmol m−2 s−1. Nitrate uptake rate in an average infiltration community (0.6 m of snow cover) was lowered by 13% over a 2-week period due to photoinhibition. Various measurements of microbial productivity in streambed pebble biofilms were analyzed almost monthly for 1 year to quantify the importance of primary production as an autochthonous source of organic matter utilized to support heterotrophic bacterial production in the dynamic food web within this natural microbial habitat. Bacterial density varied from 0.3 × 108 to 1.4 × 108 cells cm−2, and chlorophyll a concentration ranged from 0.7 to 25.9 μg cm−2, with no coupled oscillation between seasonal changes in these two parameters. In bottle incubation experiments, the instantaneous bacterial growth rate of bacteria was significantly correlated with their production rate [measured by frequency of dividing cells (FDC)] as follows: ln μ = 0.138FDC − 3.003 (n = 15, r 2 = 0.445, p < 0.001). FDC values in the pebble biofilms increased with fluctuations during the study period, ranging from 3.6% to 9.2%. Bacterial production rates largely fluctuated between 0.15 to 0.92 μg C cm−2 h−1, and its seasonal pattern was similar to that of bacterial density. Net primary production measured between May 2002 to November 2002 attained minimum level (0.5 μg C cm−2 h−1) in June and maximum level (1.9 μg C cm−2 h−1) in August. Percentages of bacterial production to net primary production ranged between 21% and 120%. Because this ratio extends both below and above 100% for these parameters, it is likely that both autochthonous and allochthonous supplies of organic matter are important for production of bacteria in the pebble biofilms that develop in rapidly flowing fresh water streams.  相似文献

Size-fractionated chlorophyll a (Chla)-specific productivity (μgC μgChla −1 h−1) was measured at 11 stations off the northern coast of the South Shetland Islands during summer. The Chla-specific productivity of the 2- to 10 or 10- to 330-μm fraction was highest at 100% and 23% light depths. The Chla-specific productivity of the 2- to 10-μm fraction was generally highest, and that of the <2 or 10- to 330-μm fraction was sometimes highest at 12% and 1% light depths. Temperature was less than 3°C within the euphotic zone at all stations. The hypothesis of Shiomoto et al., according to which Chla-specific productivity of picophytoplankton (<2 μm) is not significantly higher than that of larger phytoplankton (>2 μm) in water colder than 10°C, was supported on condition that light is not limited for larger phytoplankton. Castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) plants were grown for 5–7 weeks in a controlled environment at 350 μl l−1 or 700 μl l−1 CO2. Carbon assimilation, assimilate deposition, dark respiration and assimilate mobilization were measured in leaves 2, 3 and 4 (counted from the base of the plant), and a balance sheet of carbon input and export was elaborated for both CO2 concentrations. Carbon dioxide assimilation was nearly constant over the illumination period, with only a slight depression occurring at the end of the day in mature source leaves, not in young source leaves. Assimilation was ca. 40% higher at 700 μl l−1 than at 350 μl l−1 CO2. The source leaves increased steadily in weight per unit area during the first 3 weeks, more at 700 μl l−1 than at 350 μl l−1 CO2. On top of an irreversible weight increase, there was a large gain in dry weight during the day, which was reversed during the night. This reversible weight gain was constant over the life time of the leaf and ca. 80% higher at 700 μl l−1 than at 350 μl l−1. Most of it was due to carbohydrates. The carbon content (as a percentage) was not altered by the CO2 treatment. Respiration was 25% higher in high-CO2 plants when based on leaf area, but the same when based on dry weight. The rate of carbon export via the phloem was the same during the daytime in plants grown at 350 μl l−1 and 700 μl l−1 CO2. During the night the low-CO2 plants had only 50% of the daytime export rate, in contrast to the high-CO2 plants which maintained the high export rate. It was concluded that the phloem loading system is saturated during the daytime in both CO2 regimes, whereas during the night the assimilate supply is reduced in plants in the normal CO2 concentration. Two-thirds of the carbon exported from the leaves was permanently incorporated as plant dry matter in the residual plant parts. This “assimilation efficiency” was the same for both CO2 regimes. It is speculated that under 350 μl l−1 CO2 the growing Ricinus plant operates at sink limitation during the day and at source limitation during the night. A thermostable lipase was produced in continuous cultivation of a newly isolated thermophilic Bacillus sp. strain IHI-91 growing optimally at 65 °C. Lipase activity decreased with increasing dilution rate while lipase productivity showed a maximum of 340 U l−1 h−1 at a dilution rate of 0.4 h−1. Lipase productivity was increased by 50% compared to data from batch fermentations. Up to 70% of the total lipase activity measured was associated to cells and by-products or residual substrate. Kinetic and stoichiometric parameters for the utilisation of olive oil were determined. The maximal biomass output method led to a saturation constant K S of 0.88 g/l. Both batch growth data and a washout experiment yielded a maximal specific growth rate, μmax, of 1.0 h−1. Oxygen uptake rates of up to 2.9 g l−1h−1 were calculated and the yield coefficient, Y X/O, was determined to be 0.29 g dry cell weight/g O2. From an overall material balance the yield coefficient, Y X/S, was estimated to be 0.60 g dry cell weight/g olive oil. Cadmium and mercury concentrations were measured in the tissues of 64 individual albatrosses [23 wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans), 9 royal albatrosses (Diomedea epomophora) and 32 shy albatrosses (Thalassarche cauta)] which were killed as by-catch in longline fishing activities between 1991 and 1994. Mercury concentrations were also determined for 33 shy albatross eggs (excluding shells). The birds were all sexed and assigned to one of two age classes (immature and adult). The three species exhibited differences both in overall concentrations of cadmium and mercury, and also in the pattern of accumulation of metals with age and sex. Wandering albatrosses exhibited the highest mercury concentrations with a mean concentration in adult liver samples of 920.0 ± 794.1 μg g−1 dry weight. Shy albatrosses had the lowest mercury concentrations with mean concentrations in adult livers of 36.3 ± 21.4 mg g−1 dry weight. The highest mercury concentration was 1800 μg g−1 for an adult female wandering albatross. Cadmium concentrations were less variable, with adult royal albatrosses having the highest average concentrations (180.0 ± 165.0 in adult kidneys) and adult shy albatrosses the lowest (40.1 ± 20.0 in adult kidney). The highest individual cadmium concentration was 287 μg g−1 for a juvenile wandering albatross. There was no evidence of increased accumulation of cadmium with age in any of the species, but wandering albatrosses showed higher mercury concentrations in adults than juveniles. Female wandering albatrosses also had significantly higher mercury concentrations than males. The mercury contents of the shy albatross eggs were very low, with a maximum concentration of 5.4 μg g−1. The results of this study are consistent with the findings of previous work on albatrosses and support the notion that the life-history strategy of these species (i.e. long-lived with low reproductive output) may be an important determinant in the concentrations of some metals found in their tissues. Recombinant Escherichia coli strain GCSC 6576, harboring a high-copy-number plasmid containing the Ralstonia eutropha genes for polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) synthesis and the E. coli ftsZ gene, was employed to produce poly-(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) from whey. pH-stat fed-batch fermentation, using whey powder as the nutrient feed, produced cellular dry weight and PHB concentrations of 109 g l−1 and 50 g l−1 respectively in 47 h. When concentrated whey solution containing 210 g l−1 lactose was used as the nutrient feed, cellular dry weight and PHB concentrations of 87 g l−1 and 69 g l−1 respectively could be obtained in 49 h by pH-stat fed-batch culture. The PHB content was as high as 80% of the cellular dry weight. These results suggest that cost-effective production of PHB is possible by fed-batch culture of recombinant E. coli using concentrated whey solution as a substrate. Mesozooplankton (predominantly 200–2000 μm) were sampled at a shelf and an oceanic station close to South Georgia, South Atlantic, during austral spring (October/November) 1997. Onshelf zooplankton biomass was extremely high at 10–16 g dry mass m−2 (0–150 m), 70% comprising the small neritic clausocalaniid copepod Drepanopus forcipatus. Large calanoid species, principally Calanoides acutus and Rhincalanus gigas, contributed only 8–10%. At the oceanic station, biomass in the sampled water column (0–1000 m) was ∼6.5 g dry mass m−2 and 4–6 g dry mass m−2 in the top 200 m. Here, large calanoids composed 40–50% of the standing stock. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) occurred in low abundances at both stations. Vertical profiles obtained with a Longhurst Hardy Plankton Recorder indicated that populations of C. acutus and R. gigas, which overwinter at depth, had completed their spring ascent and were resident in surface waters. Dry mass, carbon and lipid values were lower than found in summer but were consistent with overwintered populations. Phytoplankton concentrations were considerably higher at the oceanic station (2–3 mg chlorophyll a m−3) and increased over the time on station. In response to this, egg production of both large calanoid species and growth rates of R. gigas approached those measured in summer. Onshelf phytoplankton concentrations were lower (<1 mg m−3), and low egg production rates suggested food limitation. Here phytoplankton rations equivalent to 6% zooplankton body C would have been sufficient to clear primary production whereas at the oceanic station daily carbon fixation was broadly equivalent to zooplankton carbon biomass.  Phytoplankton biomass, community structure and productivity of the Great Astrolabe lagoon and surrounding ocean were studied using measurements of chlorophyll concentration and carbon uptake. The contribution of picophytoplankton to biomass, productivity and community structure was estimated by size fractionation, 14C-incubation and flow cytometry analysis. Picoplankton red fluorescence was demonstrated to be a proxy for chlorophyll <3 μm. Consequently, the percentage contribution to chl a<3 μm from each picoplankton group could be calculated using regression estimated values of ψ i (fg chl a per unit of red fluorescence). In the lagoon, average chlorophyll concentration was 0.8 mg m-3 with 45% of phytoplankton <3 μm. Primary production reached 1.3 g C m-2 day-1 with 53% due to phytoplankton <3 μm. Synechococcus was the most abundant group at all stations, followed by Prochlorococcus and picoeukaryotes. At all stations, Prochlorococcus represented less than 4% of the chl a <3 μm, Synechococcus between 85 and 95%, and Picoeukaryotes between 5 and 10%. In the upper 40 m of surrounding oceanic waters, phytoplankton biomass was dominated by the >3 μm size fraction. In deeper water, the <1 μm size fraction dominated. Prochlorococcus was the most abundant picoplankton group and their contributions to the chlorophyll a<3 μm were close to that of the picoeukaryotes (50% each). Accepted: 27 May 1999  相似文献

The influence of diesel fuel and “Arabian light” crude oil contamination were investigated on the land fast ice located in the continental shelf of Terre Adélie, Antarctica, during the austral winter 1993. Autotrophic biomass exhibited a clear seasonal pattern. In uncontaminated sea ice, chlorophyll a concentration showed two maxima, one in April (50 mg m−3) during sea-ice formation, and the second one in spring just before the ice thaw (20 mg m−3). The crude oil and diesel fuel contamination induced a negative effect on ice-microalgae biomass, which remained at a weak level throughout the ice-covered period. However, the inhibitory effect of diesel contamination was immediate while the crude oil effect occurred after the autumn phytoplankton bloom. Addition of fertilizer (Inipol EAP-22) to diesel and crude oil had a clear favourable effect on ice-microalgae. Chlorophyll a biomass exhibited the same seasonal pattern in fertilized and uncontaminated areas. Accepted: 10 November 1998  相似文献

Chlorophyll a and nutrient concentrations along with temperature and salinity values were measured at 22 CTD stations along a 735-km transect running to the northwest of the island of South Georgia, Southern Ocean. Measurements were repeated during five summer surveys (January and February 1994, January 1996, December 1996, January 1998) and one spring survey (October 1997). The transect sampled Sub-Antarctic Zone water in the north, Polar Frontal Zone water and Antarctic Zone water in the south. Chlorophyll a concentrations were lowest to the north of the transect and frequently high (up to 17 mg m−3) in the deep open ocean of the Antarctic Zone. Sub-surface peaks were measured in all zones and chlorophyll a was detectable to a depth of 150 m. There was a clear latitudinal temperature gradient in the near-surface waters (0–50 m), the warmest water occurring in the north (∼12 °C), and the coolest in the Antarctic Zone (∼2 °C). There was also a well-defined latitudinal gradient in summer near-surface silicate concentrations (∼2, 4, and 10 mmol m−3 in the Sub-Antarctic Zone, the Polar Frontal Zone and the Antarctic Zone, respectively), increasing to >20 mmol m−3 near South Georgia. Distinct differences in silicate concentrations were also evident in all three zones to a depth of 500 m. Near-surface nitrate and phosphate concentrations were relatively low to the north of the transect (∼14 and 1 mmol m−3, respectively) and higher in the Polar Frontal Zone and Antarctic Zone (∼18 and 1.4 mmol m−3, respectively). Ammonium and nitrite were restricted to the upper 200 m of the water column, and exhibited sub-surface concentration peaks, the lowest being in the Sub-Antarctic Zone (0.68 and 0.25 mmol m−3, respectively) and the highest in the Antarctic Zone (1.72 and 0.29 mmol m−3, respectively). Surface (∼6 m) spring nutrient measurements provided an indication of pre-bloom conditions; ammonium and nitrite concentrations were low (∼0.27 and 0.28 mmol m−3, respectively), while silicate, nitrate and phosphate concentrations were high and similar to previously measured winter values (e.g. ∼26, 23, 2 mmol m−3, respectively in the Antarctic Zone). Although the values measured were very variable, and there was some evidence of a seasonal growth progression, the chlorophyll a and nutrient distribution patterns were dominated by intercruise (interannual) factors. Approximate nutrient depletions (spring minus summer) appeared similar in the Polar Frontal Zone and Antarctic Zone for nitrate and phosphate, while silicate showed a marked latitudinal increase from north to south throughout the transect. Highest chlorophyll a concentrations coincided with the highest apparent silicate depletions over the deep ocean of the Antarctic Zone. In this area, relatively warm, easterly flowing Antarctic Circumpolar Current water meets cooler, westerly flowing water that is influenced by the Weddell-Scotia Confluence and is rich in nutrients, especially silicate. We studied the structural characteristics of the littoral epilithon in nine lentic water bodies at Hope Bay, Antarctic Peninsula, during summer 2002. At each site we measured the main physical and chemical variables and took epilithic samples for the analysis of dry weigh, ash, ash-free dry weight and chlorophyll a concentration. Distance from the sea of each water body was also considered. One site was selected for sampling lakes and ponds, except for Boeckella lake, where two sampling sites (A and B) were selected due to the heterogeneity of its littoral zone. Three stones for chlorophyll a analysis and another three to estimate dry weight, ash and ash-free dry weight, were taken randomly about 1 m away from the shore-line of each sampling site. Measurements of physical and chemical characteristics were obtained similarly. Water samples for chemical analysis were taken sub-superficially. Lakatoss system of classification and the Autotrophic Index were used to make functional inferences about the epilithic communities. Two PCA analyses were made to classify the water bodies according to environmental features and epilithic variables. In the latter, major patterns in data of epilithon were subsequently interpreted based on environmental data using external validation. Pingüi pond, located in the middle of the penguin rookery, was considered as a passive sample in both PCA analyses due to its extreme characteristics. Limnological features of the studied water bodies were similar to those of other Maritime Antarctic lakes. According to the Lakatoss index, 60% of the sampled lakes had high epilithic mass and a same proportion showed an inorganic type of epilithon The fact that 40% of the water bodies were autotrophic confirmed the importance of benthos as primary producer. According to environmental features, the well-defined groups of lakes emerged from the PCA were mainly determined by distance from the sea, pH, conductivity and salinity, and corresponded to the principal hydrological basins found in the region. Based on the results of the second PCA, littoral epilithon was affected by nitrate concentration and conductivity. In this ordination, water bodies from the same hydrological basin were separated probably as a result of a very complex inter-play of factors with a site-specific response to particular microhabitat characteristics.  相似文献

To identify the importance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonizing wetland seedlings following flooding, we assessed the effects of AMF on seedling establishment of two pioneer species, Bidens frondosa and Eclipta prostrata grown under three levels of water availability and ask: (1) Do inoculated seedlings differ in growth and development from non-inoculated plants? (2) Are the effects of inoculation and degree of colonization dependent on water availability? (3) Do plant responses to inoculation differ between two closely related species? Inoculation had no detectable effects on shoot height, or plant biomass but did affect biomass partitioning and root morphology in a species-specific manner. Shoot/root ratios were significantly lower in non-inoculated E. prostrata plants compared with inoculated plants (0.381 ± 0.066 vs. 0.683 ± 0.132). Root length and surface area were greater in non-inoculated E. prostrata (259.55 ± 33.78 cm vs. 194.64 ± 27.45 cm and 54.91 ± 7.628 cm2 vs. 46.26 ± 6.8 cm2, respectively). Inoculation had no detectable effect on B. frondosa root length, volume, or surface area. AMF associations formed at all levels of water availability. Hyphal, arbuscular, and vesicular colonization levels were greater in dry compared with intermediate and flooded treatments. Measures of mycorrhizal responsiveness were significantly depressed in E. prostrata compared with B. frondosa for total fresh weight (−0.3 ± 0.18 g vs. 0.06 ± 0.06 g), root length (−0.78 ± 0.28 cm vs.−0.11 ± 0.07 cm), root volume (−0.49 ± 0.22 cm3 vs. 0.06 ± 0.07 cm3), and surface area (−0.59 ± 0.23 cm2 vs.−0.03 ± 0.08 cm2). Given the disparity in species response to AMF inoculation, events that alter AMF prevalence in wetlands could significantly alter plant community structure by directly affecting seedling growth and development.  相似文献
