Sweat bees (Halictidae) exhibit great interspecific and intraspecific diversity in their social organisation, yet there is
remarkably little information on the sociogenetic organisation of any species. Lasioglossum malachurum is a eusocial sweat bee with an annual lifecycle that exhibits considerable variation in its social organisation across its
wide geographic range from northern to southern Europe. We collected all adults from 31 L. malachurum nests at Eichkogl, Austria, near the latitudinal centre of its distribution, and genotyped 148 workers using 5 highly variable
microsatellite loci developed for this species. Nests were often queenless (48% of nests) during the second phase of worker
activity, when colonies were provisioning the sexual brood. Pedigree reconstruction and estimates of nestmate genetic relatedness
demonstrated that nests often (32% of nests) contained alien workers, probably as a result of worker drifting from their natal
to a foreign nest. Queen effective mating frequency was variable (harmonic mean me = 1.24), but sometimes high (maximum 2.7). These data demonstrate that nests of L. malachurum do not have a classical eusocial sociogenetic organisation (monogyny, monandry) and thereby pose a challenge to exclusively
relatedness based arguments for the evolution of eusociality in the taxon.

Adult bees and wasps provide all the food their offspring require to grow from egg to adult. For a given diet, offspring body size generally increases with an increase in the amount of food consumed as a larva, but the extent to which body size is influenced by the type of food consumed is poorly known. Pollen ranges from 2–60% protein among plant species, and bees are extremely efficient at assimilating nitrogen; therefore, it seems likely that either parent bees adjust the size of larval provisions to compensate for differences in pollen protein concentration or bee offspring attain different body size depending on the pollen type(s) consumed as a larva. We presented the generalist sweat bee Lasioglossum zephyrum with pollen diets that differed in protein content and monitored offspring body size during two experiments. In a protein supplementation experiment, diets ranged from 20–66% protein and consisted of Typha pollen amended with soy protein. On a pollen/soy diet, offspring body size increased 25% with a shift from 20–37% protein, but did not increase further at greater protein concentrations. In a multiple pollen experiment, pollen diets ranged from 20–39% protein and consisted of eight pollens that differed naturally in protein concentration. The largest offspring arose from the most protein-rich pollens, whereas much smaller bees developed on protein-poor pollens. Provision size only predicted offspring size when pollen type, and therefore protein quantity, was considered. Adult foragers did not adjust provision size to compensate for pollen protein. Therefore, offspring body size appears to result from a combination of controlled (provision size) and uncontrolled (pollen quality) factors that arise out of bee foraging decisions. 相似文献

Social competition among gynes in halictine bees: The influence of bee size and pheromones on behavior 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Solitary gynes of two species of social bees, Lasioglossum (Evylaeus) malachurumand L. (E.) pauxillum(Hymenoptera: Halictidae), were observed in the field and in the laboratory during the solitary (spring) phase of their life cycles. Fighting over nests among gynes of the former species is common when nests are being provisioned and can result in serious injury or even death to one or both interactants. The payoff is occasional acquisition of a nest. In contrast, fighting was never observed in the field among gynes of L. pauxillum.Several factors determine the outcome of such fights in L. malachuram,these include relative sizes of the two opponents as well as nest ownership. Dyadic interactions in the laboratory reveal that size influences the behavioral strategies of the gynes of both species, with the larger of two individuals in a dyadic interaction being on average more aggressive. Furthermore, in a second experimental series with L. malachurum,application to the smaller gyne of synthetically derived macrocyclic lactones found in the species' Dufour's gland pheromone mixture significantly decreased the aggressive tendencies of the larger such that its behavior was no longer significantly different from that for the smaller gyne. Therefore, among gynes, aggressive pheromonal signaling, coupled with other possible signal modalities, is probably an integral part in the communication system. 相似文献

Abstract.
- 1 When freshly eclosed females of the primitively eusocial wasp Ropalidia marginata (Lep.) are isolated, only about 50% of them build nests and lay eggs thereby suggesting a pre-imaginal biasing of caste.
- 2 Wasps that lay eggs take a very variable amount of time after eclosion to start doing so.
- 3 Females eclosing from nests where larvae are fed at a relatively higher rate are more likely to become egg-layers and are likely to take less time after eclosion to begin to lay eggs.
- 4 Thus, both forms of pre-imaginal biasing of caste, namely, differences in egg laying capacity and differences in the time taken to attain reproductive maturity, appear to be influenced by larval nutrition.

Cuckoo bees and velvet ants use different resources of their shared host bees, the former laying eggs on the host pollen stores and the latter on immature stages. We studied the activity patterns of the cuckoo bee Sphecodes monilicornis and the velvet ant Myrmilla capitata at two nesting sites of their host, the social digger bee Lasioglossum malachurum , over a 3 year period. Due to the difference in host exploitation, we expected different temporal patterns of the two natural enemies as well as a positive spatial association with host nest density for both species. At a daily level, S. monilicornis was more abundant between 10.00 and 15.00 h, while M. capitata was most active in the early morning and late afternoon; both species activities were independent from host provisioning activity. The activity of cuckoo bees was in general positively correlated with the density of open host nests (but not with the total number of nests), while that of velvet ants was rarely correlated with this factor. Sphecodes monilicornis was seen both attacking the guard bees and directly entering into the host nests or digging close to nest entrances, while M. capitata only gained access to host nests through digging. We conclude that the temporal and spatial segregation between the two species may be, at least partially, explained both by the different resources exploited and by the different dynamics of host interactions. 相似文献

In the primitively eusocial wasp, Ropalidia marginata,individual females are known to drift from one newly founded nest to another. In the laboratory, young (<6- to 8-day-old) alien wasps are accepted onto unrelated colonies, while older (>6- to 8-day-old) wasps are not. Here we have investigated the factors that could influence the acceptance of foreign conspecifics onto unrelated nests. Individually marked wasps of different ages, isolated immediately after eclosion from the natal nest and from each other, were introduced onto unrelated recipient nests. Considered separately, both age and ovarian condition seemed to influence the probability of acceptance as well as the levels of aggression and tolerance received by the introduced wasps. However, partial correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis indicated that only age had a direct influence and that the ovarian condition acts only through age, a variable with which it is highly correlated. The observed acceptance of young aliens and rejection of old aliens are less likely to be due to the perception of older wasps as a reproductive threat rather than some age-related factor, other than ovarian condition, for example, the relative ease with which younger wasps can be molded into desired roles. 相似文献

Summary. Circle tubes were used to investigate the influence of marking upon the behavioural profiles of two halictid species; one, Penapis toroi Rozen, putatively solitary, the other, Corynura chloris (Spinola) thought to be semisocial. Previous studies have shown that solitary bees tend to exhibit avoidance behaviour and those with a reproductive division of labour tend to behave aggressively within circle tube arenas. Marked pairs of C. chloris were significantly more cooperative than unmarked pairs and marked P. toroi showed significantly increased aggression and decreased cooperation. These findings suggest that marking bees may reduce behavioural differences among taxa with different types of social organization. Recommendations are made on how to use the circle tube apparatus to detect bee populations that might be worth more detailed studies of social organization and also for standardization in the way results of these studies are presented. Further experiments are suggested to clarify the effects of certain variables upon bee behaviour using this apparatus. The data presented here are the first for any member of the subfamily Rophitinae and the first for any bee thought to be primarily semisocial. A narrower range of behaviours were observed in the Rophitine, Penapis toroi Rozen, in comparison to species from other subfamilies of Halictidae and Corynura chloris Spinola had a behavioural profile similar to that of eusocial species.Received 15 December 2003; revised 12 September 2004; accepted 15 October 2004. 相似文献

ovarian features as usually conducted. Queen ovaries clearly exhibited two active periods, corresponding to the spring solitary
phase and the summer eusocial phase, with distinctly greater activity in the latter. In ovaries of overwintering queens oosorption
of young follicle was observed. Worker ovaries were found more active in orphan than in queenright colonies. The order of
ovarian activity obtained from pooled data, summer queens>spring queens>orphan workers>queenright workers, was also recognized
by comparison of individual females.

Прямым флюоресцентным микроскопическим методом исследовали зависимость между числом бактерий в почве и температурой почвы и содержанием почвенной влаги. Исследовали 20 расличных образпов почвы, принадлежавших к подзолистым почвам, бурозему, чернозему и садовым почвам. Число бактерий в различных видах почвы колебалось, и разница между максимальным и минимальным их содержанием в почве варьировала (рис. 1). Во всех случаях мы убеждались, что главным фактором, влияюшим на число бактерий в почве, является влажность. Роль температуры отступлает на второй план. Мы нигде не наблюдали отношений, которые отвечали бы зависимостям, установленным Fehér (R-фактор). Для большей части образцов почв зависимость между содержанием почвенной влаги и числом бактерий такова, что с повышением влажности количество бактерий возрастает почти линейно, достигая максимума при приблизительно 60% влажности. При приблизительно 80% влажности начинается выразительное падение числа бактерий (рис. 2). Для небольшого числа образцов среды мы установили наличие определенной аномалии, которая заклучается в том, что повышение содержания влаги больше чем на 80% полной влагоемкости почвы не вызывает понижения числа бактерий, однако несколько повышает дисперсию установленных величин (рис-3). 相似文献

The influence of temperature on cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) catalytic activity was studied in the temperature range 240-308 K. Temperatures below 273 K required the inclusion of the osmolyte ethylene glycol. For steady-state activity between 278 and 308 K the activation energy was 12 kcal x mol-1; the molecular activity or turnover number was 12 s-1 at 280 K in the absence of ethylene glycol. CCO activity was studied between 240 and 277 K in the presence of ethylene glycol. The activation energy was 30 kcal x mol-1; the molecular activity was 1 s-1 at 280 K. Ethylene glycol inhibits CCO by lowering the activity of water. The rate limitation in electron transfer (ET) was not associated with ET into the CCO as cytochrome a was predominantly reduced in the aerobic steady state. The activity of CCO in flash-induced oxidation experiments was studied in the low temperature range in the presence of ethylene glycol. Flash photolysis of the reduced CO complex in the presence of oxygen resulted in three discernable processes. At 273 K the rate constants were 1500 s-1, 150 s-1 and 30 s-1 and these dropped to 220 s-1, 27 s-1 and 3 s-1 at 240 K. The activation energies were 5 kcal.mol-1, 7 kcal.mol-1, and 8 kcal.mol-1, respectively. The fastest rate we ascribe to the oxidation of cytochrome a3, the intermediate rate to cytochrome a oxidation and the slowest rate to the re-reduction of cytochrome a followed by its oxidation. There are two comparisons that are important: (a). with vs. without ethylene glycol and (b). steady state vs. flash-induced oxidation. When one makes these two comparisons it is clear that the CCO only senses the presence of osmolyte during the reductive portion of the catalytic cycle. In the present work that would mean after a flash-induced oxidation and the start of the next reduction/oxidation cycle. 相似文献

The behavioral decisions of wild animals are influenced by the often conflicting needs to both feed efficiently and to avoid predators. Information regarding how lagomorphs such as the mountain hare (Lepus timidus) balance these factors throughout the day-night cycle is largely lacking despite its importance to management.To better understand the type and proportion of various behaviors the mountain hare engages in over the course of a 24-hour period, I monitored the behavior of six mountain hares under controlled conditions from early to mid-winter. The mountain hares spend the majority of their time resting (mean ± standard deviation: 32.4 ± 14.4%) and under canopy (22.4 ± 18.7%), and a smaller proportion of their time feeding (16.2 ± 6.1%). Activity peaks over the course of the 24-hour cycle reflect natural behavior patterns that emphasize the reduction of predation risk. The sunrise phase is characterized by the search for a suitable resting place; the day phase by resting and hiding. The sunset phase is characterized by the search for food, and the night phase by an equal mix of food intake and movement through the home range. These results can help land managers predict how factors such as increasing tourist activity (perceived by the hare as a safety threat) will influence the behavior of free-ranging mountain hares. 相似文献

In order to evaluate the influence of the respiratory cycle on the EEG, we compared the power spectral analysis of the EEG performed by fast Fourier transformation during inspirium and exspirium in 10 healthy subjects. The measurement was performed during spontaneous breathing and then during eupnoe (0.25 Hz), bradypnoe (0.1 Hz) and tachypnoe (0.5 Hz) paced by a metronome. In the course of spontaneous breathing and bradypnoe, there was an increase in the delta power and in the total power in the anterior temporal region during inspirium in comparison with exspirium. The eupnoe was characterized by an inspiratory decrease in the delta power in the parietal region and in the total power in the frontal region. The tachypnoe resulted in a decrease of the beta power in the central region and a decrease of the theta power in the posterior temporal and in the occipital region during inspirium. In comparison of the EEG in eupnoe, bradypnoe and tachypnoe, a decrease of spectral power of all spectral bands was found except for delta during faster breathing frequencies and vice versa with a significant difference which was found mostly between bradypnoe and tachypnoe, less frequently between eupnoe and tachypnoe. 相似文献

Organisms must make important decisions on how to allocate resources to reproduction. We investigated allocation decisions in the social wasp Vespula maculifrons to understand how social insects make reproductive choices. We first determined how annual colonies apportioned resources to growth and reproduction by analysing developing brood. In contrast to expectations, colonies invested in both growth (workers) and reproduction (males) simultaneously. In addition, colonies showed evidence of producing males in pulses and reversing their reproductive choices by decreasing investment in males late in the season. This reversal is consistent with theory suggesting that colonies decrease production in males if fitness of late emerging males is low. To further investigate reproductive decisions within colonies, we determined if the male mates of multiply-mated queens varied in their reproductive success over time. Sperm use by queens did vary over time suggesting that male success may depend on sperm clumping within the female reproductive tract. Finally, we tested if colony sex ratio conformed to expectations under kin selection theory that nestmate relatedness would positively correlate with investment in new queens if workers controlled sex allocation. Surprisingly, the proportion of queens produced by colonies was negatively correlated with nestmate relatedness, suggesting that allocation may be shaped by advantages arising from increased genetic diversity resulting from multiple mating by queens. Overall, our study suggests that the reproductive decisions of colonies are flexible and may depend both on environmental cues arising from energetic needs of the colony and genetic cues arising from mating behaviours of queens. 相似文献

The cerebral ganglia of Lineus ruber secretes a neurohormone named gonad-inhibiting hormone (GIH) controlling reproduction. As L. ruber undergoes repeated annual cycles of reproduction during its life, the way the neuroendocrine activity of the worm is seasonally regulated is an important ecophysiological question. In other words, what environmental ‘key factors’ influences the beginning of spawning season in L. ruber? In the present work we show that light is not a timer which controls the annual reproductive cycle progress of L. ruber. On the other hand our results suggest that thermoperiod is a good candidate for this function. Further work is still necessary to clarify the transduction mechanism of thermal stimuli in GIH discharge. 相似文献
