Cod Gadus morhua , haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus , pollack Pollachius pollachius and saithe Pollachius virens were abundant fishes on herring Clupea harengus spawning grounds o. southwestern Norway. Their diets were species specific and ontogenetic changes were similar to patterns observed in other areas, indicating both inter- and intraspecific resource sharing. However, strong interspecific diet overlap occurred when cod and pollack preyed upon sandeel Ammodytes marinus , and when all the gadoids fed on herring eggs during the herring spawning season in the spring. These prey items were very abundant and the extensive diet overlap may not reflect strong competitive interaction.  相似文献

Herring (Clupea harengus) and sprat (Sprattus sprattus) are the key prey resources of common terns (Sterna hirundo) breeding in the Wadden Sea. Breeding success of the terns has been below average since 2002, coinciding with exceptionally low herring recruitment and sprat abundance. Time series of herring and sprat abundance in the North Sea and in the Wadden Sea were analyzed to explain long-term breeding success and chick development at two common tern breeding colonies. North Sea herring recruitment and sprat abundance in the Wadden Sea explained the largest part of common tern breeding success, both as single variables and in a multiple regression approach. Breeding success showed stronger correlations with herring recruitment indices derived from the North Sea region compared to the Wadden Sea. Also, herring and sprat abundance data explained more variability in breeding success than of more directly responding measures such as growth rate and maximum weight of chicks. Despite spatial and temporal incoherences between fish surveys and the common tern breeding season, breeding success of common terns reflected the abundance of their key prey fish beyond their foraging range and breeding season. We argue that the ecological connectivity between large- and small-scale herring abundance and the responsiveness of common tern breeding success is strong enough to establish a fish–seabird indicator system to be potentially valuable in monitoring and conservation.  相似文献

We investigated the distributional dynamics of piscivorous seabirds in relation to the distribution of young fish outside the breeding season in the Skagerrak and Kattegat, using synoptic bottom trawl and seabird surveys. Kittiwake Rissa tridactyla , Common Guillemot Uria aalge and Razorbill Alca torda were significantly correlated with herring Clupea harengus abundance at coarse spatial scales (>20 km). The association between the three seabird species and other abundant fish species like sprat Sprattus sprattus , whiting Merlangius merlangus and Norway pout Trisopterus esmarki was considerably weaker. In the Skagerrak and Kattegat, the location of aggregations of immature herring during winter is relatively stable and predictable. The correlation with herring and the lack of correlation with the abundant, but less stable occurrence of sprat of similar caloric value suggest that the tendency among piscivorous seabirds to depend on predictable concentrations of prey during the breeding season is a common feature during the non-breeding season as well. The results are discussed in relation to ecological and winter habitat characteristics of wintering piscivorous seabirds in the eastern North Atlantic, and in relation to the management and conservation of nursering herring in the Skagerrak and Kattegat.  相似文献

Synopsis We report effects of a thermal effluent on fish and zooplankton in an impoundment in South Carolina. The effects are not directly due to heated effluent but are indirect effects on the trophic dynamics of the system and depend on the physical structure of the system, season, and geography. As effluent from a nuclear reactor cooling pond (Pond C) enters the larger Par Pond it sporadically carries with it zooplankton and/or dead fish. Pond C produces high zooplankton densities in two situations: (1) high and hot effluent flow during cold winter weather; and (2) low (cool) effluent flow during warmer seasons. High zooplankton densities attract Blueback herring, Alosa aestivalis, which attract largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides. Dying and dead bluegills, Lepomis macrochirus from Pond C (heat killed) are eaten by Par Pond bass which swim into effluent temperatures as high as 46°C to take these easy prey. Blueback herring and largemouth bass distribution are affected by the presence of food rather than by temperature. Par Pond blueback herring appear to be available to bass mainly when herring are near the effluent from Pond C and when they spawn in spring in the littoral zone. Because Blueback herring in Par Pond live only one year and because their presence in bass habitat is seasonal there is a strong seasonal component to bass food abundance. A previously reported annual oscillation in bass condition (K), with a peak in winter, occurs throughout Par Pond but is extreme in the vicinity of the effluent. The strong seasonality of food abundance for bass at the effluent correlates the winter peak in bass condition.  相似文献

The distribution of the Pacific herring of various sizes from the Okhotsk and Gizhigin-Kamchatka populations is discussed. The dependence of herring food composition on the condition of the plankton community is demonstrated. In the spring season the feeding rate of juveniles and fattening adult herring depended on the degree of its fatness and on the maturity of the gonads in the prespawning period.  相似文献

It is commonly assumed that iteroparous fish, once mature, normally reproduce in all consecutive seasons. Recent work has suggested, however, that in Norwegian spring-spawning herring—a population that undertakes extensive spawning migrations—almost one in two adults may skip their second spawning migration. Why should herring not return to spawn the year after first spawning, but instead wait an extra year? For herring, participation in distant, energetically costly, and risky spawning migrations will only pay off in terms of fitness if individuals are sufficiently large, and in sufficient condition, to both successfully migrate and spawn. Changes in the environment and individual condition should therefore affect the likelihood of skipped spawning. This paper describes long-term changes in the extent to which the second reproductive season is skipped in this herring population. These are shown to be linked to the size and condition of herring as first-time spawners, and to climatic factors possibly related to food availability. The findings corroborate the hypothesis that skipped reproduction results from trade-offs between current and future reproduction, growth and survival.  相似文献

Triglycerides and phospholipids dominate in Baltic herring flesh lipids throughout the plankton growth season though at the same time plankton species and their lipids vary considerably. Wax esters and fatty alcohols do not exist in significant amounts in Baltic herring flesh or plankton. Saturated fatty acids exist in equal proportions in herring and plankton lipids whereas monoenoic acids are more dominant in herring and polyunsaturated acids in plankton lipids, respectively. The component alkyl chains are similar in both fish and plankton fatty acids, thus suggesting the planktonic origin. During the period of abundant availability of plankton the changes in the fatty acids of the herring depot fat are related to the changes in the plankton lipid composition.  相似文献

Samples of herring Clupea harengus in the Baltic were collected during the spawning season in western, middle and eastern waters off the Polish coast. Two samples were taken per area, several morphometric characters were measured and some meristic characters (vertebrae and gill rakers) were counted. Infection with Anisakis simplex larvae, total length, age and maturity stage were recorded. Univariate and multivariate statistical tests were used to compare the samples, discriminant analysis was applied to separate herring populations and the fraction of herring populations in each area was estimated. The results obtained indicated that infected fish represented a mixed group of western and central Baltic herring. In the first samples collected from each area, the share of the western population decreased from 40% in the western to 18% in the middle and 13% in the eastern coasts. The share of western herring was higher in the second samples collected in the same area and decreased from 91% in the western coast to 14 and 32% in the middle and eastern ones, respectively.  相似文献

The length–age distributions and genetic variation of ten microsatellite loci were examined in samples of herring from the Chupa Inlet of the Kandalaksha Gulf of the White Sea. The samples were collected on the same spawning grounds over a period of 13 years and during the same spawning season. The obtained data demonstrate stability of the length structure and genetic characteristics (allele and genotype frequencies, allelic richness, and heterozygosity). The degree of temporal genetic differentiation was not statistically significant, θ = 0.0038 (CI,–0.0006 to 0.006). Spatial differentiation of the White Sea herring far outweighs the level of temporal variability, which makes it possible to suggest the important role of reproductive isolation in the formation of the population genetic structure of herring.  相似文献

The growth of Pacific herring Clupea pallasii in Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan) during the first year of life is followed based on long-term data (from 1999 to 2014). The first vegetation season is characterized by periodical changes of the growth rate and body size variation. Over the period of investigation, a relationship between the growth rate and abundance of Pacific herring at the age 0+ is not detected. In the first year of life, the groups of fishes with a slow and fast growth rate are registered. They possess similar trends of growth but differ in the increment size and intensity of the growth in the fall.  相似文献

The population structure and dynamics of the Pacific herring Clupea pallasii in the Peter the Great Bay was analyzed. It was shown that a lower abundance level is generally characteristic of this herring population. Very strong generations appear only once every several decades because their development requires a complex combination of conditions: high reproduction, some initial level of abundance, and favorable climatic and hydrological conditions.  相似文献

Sleep postures and eye state of free-ranging herring gulls (Larus argentatus) were studied during the breeding season. Three mutually exclusive behaviours were observed, namely sleep, rest-sleep and rest postures. Arousal thresholds, eye blink rates and eye closure time were obtained during these behaviours. Significant relationships existed between eye blinking, eye closure, and a raised threshold of arousal when birds were in the sleep and rest-sleep postures. During a natural disturbance, birds in the sleep posture remained in this posture but did not blink their eyes: this is called pseudo sleep. Male gulls also exhibited a lower threshold of arousal while in the sleep posture compared with females. We conclude that rhythmic eye blinking is a good indication of sleep in herring gulls.  相似文献

How a Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) Colony Defends itself against Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus) The subject of this study is the anti-predator behaviour of a small common tern colony near a large herring gull colony on the island of Mellum, West Germany (Fig. 1). In 1980 the number of gulls crossing this tern colony increased during the terns' chick-stage (Fig. 4). Observed predation of tern chicks was independent of tide and time of day (3., Fig. 5). The frequency of tern reactions corresponded to the number of herring gull crossings (Fig. 5, Table 1). The terns' responses increased between morning and evening (Fig. 8). Tern up-flights and attacks increased absolutely and as a percentage, with the advance of the breeding season (Fig. 3, 4). They were positively correlated with the observed chick predation and the number of pairs with chicks, most markedly with chicks older than 5 days (Figs. 3, 4; Table 1). This increased defence was maintained by fewer pairs as, by then, many had lost their own broods (Fig. 4). As the breeding season progressed, herring gulls increasingly became the main cause of tern up-flights and the object of the attacks (Figs. 9–11). The up-flights of the whole colony, which occurred frequently and spontaneously during incubation, were observed only rarely after hatching and were almost exclusively a response to herring gulls (Figs. 10, 12). The lower herring gulls flew over the colony, the more frequently common terns flew up or attacked and the more individuals were involved in these responses (Figs. 6, 13, 14). During the breeding period, communal up-flights and attacks by terns increased as a percentage (Figs. 12, 13, 15–17). Group-attacks effected changes in the gulls' flying-routes more often than did individual attacks (Fig. 18). Despite the defence behaviour and its adaptation to the predation pressure, herring gulls often succeeded in robbing chicks. This is why the breeding success of the common tern was poor (< 0.4 chicks/nest). Possible reasons for this are discussed.  相似文献

Utilization of storage lipids and storage proteins by non-feeding north-west Atlantic herring was assessed under conditions of: (1) concurrent gonad maturation and overwintering periods with differing rates of gonad development for males and females (spring-spawncrs); (2) overwintering, reproductively dormant and spent males and females (autumn-spawners); and (3) approximately equivalent rates of gonad development during late summer for males and females (autumn-spawners). Storage lipids were depleted by all non-feeding fish but storage proteins were depleted only by herring with measurable gonad development during the observation period independently of season (female spring-spawners, maturing male and female autumn-spawners). The analyses indicate that storage lipids sustain routine and active metabolism while storage proteins are utilized to develop gonad. Therefore, the relative investment into reproduction versus routine and active metabolism can be evaluated separately for non-feeding herring using readily obtainable tissue proximate composition data.  相似文献

This paper updates previous reviews of the 1993 stock decline of Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) in Prince William Sound, Alaska, and focuses on hypotheses about subsequent poor recovery. Recent age structured assessment modeling with covariate analysis indicates that the population dynamics of the sound’s herring are influenced by oceanic factors, nutrition, and, most substantially, hatchery releases of juvenile pink salmon. For the 1993 decline, poor nutrition remains the most probable cause with disease a secondary response. Concerning poor recovery, we examined 16 potential factors and found three to be causal: oceanic factors, poor nutrition, and hatchery releases of juvenile pink salmon. Absences of strong year classes at both Sitka and Prince William Sound after 1993 indicate the action of large-scale ocean processes. Beyond regional-scale environmental factors, two factors specific to the sound influence the population dynamics of herring and are likely impeding recovery. First, pink salmon fry releases have increased to about 600 million annually and may disrupt feeding in young herring, which require adequate nutrition for growth and overwintering survival. Juvenile pink salmon and age-1 herring co-occur in nearshore areas of bays in late spring and summer, and available data on dietary overlap indicates potential competition between the age-1 juvenile herring and juvenile pink salmon. Field studies demonstrate that juvenile herring reduce food intake substantially in the presence of juvenile pink salmon. Second, overwintering humpback whales may consume potentially large amounts of adult herring, but further studies must confirm to what extent whale predation reduces herring biomass.  相似文献

Herring gulls Larus argentatus and lesser black-backed gulls Larus fuscus breeding at Walney Island, Cumbria, the largest breeding colony of the two species in the UK, have recently shown very different population trends. The former has declined sharply, whereas numbers of the latter have been maintained for several years. Here we compare aspects of the feeding and breeding ecology of the two species in order to examine whether or not this suggests explanations for their different population trends. Comparison of the ratio of the two species in flight lines leading to different feeding sites and their diet composition showed that the lesser black-backed gulls fed more at sea and the herring gulls fed more in the intertidal zone. Urban resources were used by both these species. These differences have been consistent over the last three decades. Susceptibility to death from botulism at the breeding colony was the same for the two species. The availability of the intertidal zone for foraging appears to have declined in recent years, and this may have had a more negative impact on the herring gull. However, the breeding success of the two species remains relatively high. This study suggests that differences in foraging behaviour and food availability during the breeding season are unlikely to be responsible for the marked differences in demographic trends in the two species. Changes in local food availability during the winter would be expected to have more effect on the resident herring gull. This work highlights the need for more detailed studies of the ecology of both species during the breeding season and in winter in regions showing differing patterns of population change.  相似文献

The multispecies stock‐production model of Horbowy developed in 1996 was further extended to include the unexploited part of a stock. The model was then applied to simulate stock dynamics and species interactions of cod, herring, and sprat in the Baltic from 1982 to 2001. The model indicates that there have been large declines in cod and herring biomass over the past two decades and a strong increase in sprat biomass in the 1990s. Using the extended stock‐production model, the relative changes in stock biomass were similar to the changes derived using the age‐structured multispecies model, the multispecies virtual population analysis (MSVPA). However, the production model estimates of the average predation mortality of young cod and young sprat are much lower than those derived from MSVPA, although the estimates for young and adult herring and adult sprat are similar in both approaches. The estimates of food suitability show that the preferred food of adult cod is adult sprat and young herring, while the suitability of young sprat, young cod, and adult herring is much smaller. The simulations performed show that the multispecies production model, which is less data‐demanding than age‐structured MSVPA, can provide estimates of stock dynamics and species interactions that are largely consistent with those estimated by MSVPA. The quality of input data in terms of recruitment and fishing‐effort indices strongly impacts the reliability of the model's results.  相似文献

Both the Norwegian Spring Spawning herring (Clupea harengus) and the Northeast Arctic (NEA) cod (Gadus morhua) are examples of strong stock reduction and decline of the associated fisheries due to overfishing followed by a recovery. Cod and herring are both part of the Barents Sea ecosystem, which has experienced major warming events in the early (1920–1940) and late 20th century. While the collapse or near collapse of these stocks seems to be linked to an instability created by overfishing and climate, the difference of population dynamics before and after is not fully understood. In particular, it is unclear how the changes in population dynamics before and after the collapses are associated with biotic interactions. The combination of the availability of unique long‐term time series for herring and cod makes it a well‐suited study system to investigate the effects of collapse. We examine how species interactions may differently affect the herring and cod population dynamic before and after a collapse. Particularly we explore, using a GAM modeling approach, how herring could affect cod and vice versa. We found that the effect of cod biomass on herring that was generally positive (i.e., covariation) but the effect became negative after the collapse (i.e., predation or competition). Likewise a change occurred for the cod, the juvenile herring biomass that had no effect before the collapse had a negative effect after. Our results indicate that the population collapses may alter the inter‐specific interactions and response to abiotic environmental changes. While the stocks are at similar abundance levels before and after the collapses, the system is potentially different in its functioning and may require different management action.  相似文献
