Anaerobic treatment of wastewater from a selected seafood processing plant was conducted at organic loading rates (OLR) ranging from 0.3 to 1.8 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/m3.day and hydraulic retention times (HRT) ranging from 36 to 6 days. COD reduction decreased with increasing OLR. More than 75% COD reduction could be maintained up to an OLR of about 1 kg COD/m3.day with an HRT of 11 days. An OLR of 1.3 kg COD/m3.day corresponding to an HRT of 6.6 days gave maximal biogas productivity of 1.5 m3/m3.day or 1.3 m3 biogas/kg COD with a 65% COD reduction. If the HRT was kept constant at 11 days, an OLR of 1.3 kg COD/m3.day achieved maximal biogas productivity (1.1 m3/m3.day) and yield (0.75 m3/kg COD) and a 60% COD reduction for treatment of tuna condensate.P. Summary A semi-continuous anaerobic digester was used to degrade palm oil mill effluent (POME) under thermophilic conditions. A volumetric loading of 15.1 kg COD/m3·day equivalent to a hydraulic retention time of 4.3 days was maintained for two months. This rate is significantly faster than the rates achieved in previously reported studies. Soluble COD removals were greater than 96%.  相似文献

This paper describes the thermophilic anaerobic biodegradation of wine distillery wastewater (vinasses) in a laboratory fluidised bed reactor (AFB) with a porous support medium. The experimental protocol was defined to examine the effect of increasing organic loading rate on the efficiency of AFB and to report on its steady-state performance. Moreover, in order to evaluate treatment efficiency and to investigate fermentation kinetics in an AFB reactor, experimental data were used to estimate the ‘active biomass’ concentration using an autocatalytic kinetic model proposed in this paper, since viable biomass in AFB reactors is very difficult to measure experimentally. The AFB reactor was subjected to a program of steady-state operation over a range of hydraulic retention time (HRTs) of 2.5–0.37 days and organic loading rate (OLRs) up to 5.88 kgCOD/m3/day in order to evaluate its treatment capacity. The AFB reactor was initially operated with organic loading rate of 5.88 kgCOD/m3/day and HRT of 2.5 days. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was found to be 96.5% in the reactor while the methane content of biogas produced in the digester reached 1.08 m3/m3digester/day. Over 94 days operating period, an OLR of 32 kgCOD/m3/day at a food-to-micro-organisms (F:M) ratio of 0.55 kgCOD/kgVSatt/day was achieved with 81.5% COD removal efficiency in the experimental AFB reactor. At this moment, the methane content of biogas produced in the digester reached 9.0 m3/m3digester/day. The proposed kinetic model is able to estimate kinetic constants of the biodegradation process: non-biodegradable substrate (Snb) and active adhered biomass concentration (Xa). The parameters of the model were obtained by the curve-fitting method to the proposed kinetic model using the COD as substrate of the anaerobic process and assuming a maximum specific μmax: 0.72 per day. The comparison of the measured concentration of volatile attached solids (VSatt) with the estimated ‘active’ biomass concentration indicated that extremely high ‘active biomass’ concentrations can be maintained in the system because biofilm thickness is limited by the liquid flow rate applied. This is due to the fact that the anaerobic fluidised bed system retains the growth support medium in suspension by drag forces exerted by upflowing wastewater, and the distribution of biomass holdup (in the form of a biofilm) is thus relatively uniform.  相似文献

Batch anaerobic digestion was employed to investigate the efficient start-up strategies for the liquefied food waste, and sequencing batch digestion was also performed to determine maximum influent organic loading rate (OLR) for efficient and stable operation. The results indicated that the start-up could be well improved using appropriate wastewater organic load and food-to-microorganism ratios (F/M). When digestion was initialized at low chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration of 20.0 gCOD L?1, the start-up would go well using lower F/M ratio of 0.5–0.7. The OLR 7.0 gCOD L?1 day?1 was recommended for operating the ASBR digestion, in which the COD conversion of 96.7 ± 0.53 % and biomethane yield of 3.5 ± 0.2 L gCOD?1 were achieved, respectively. The instability would occur when OLR was higher than 7.0 gCOD L?1 day?1, and this instability was not recoverable. Lipid was suggested to be removed before anaerobic digestion. The anaerobic digestion process in engineering project ran well, and good performance was achieved when the start-up and operational strategies from laboratory study were applied. For case application, stable digestion performance was achieved in a digester (850 m3 volume) with biogas production of 1.0–3.8 m3 m?3 day?1.  相似文献

The application of low-temperature (10 °C) anaerobic digestion (LtAD) for the treatment of complex dairy-based wastewater in an inverted fluidised bed (IFB) reactor was investigated. Inadequate mixing intensity provoked poor hydrolysis of the substrate (mostly protein), which resulted in low chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency throughout the trial, averaging ~69 % at the best operational period. Overgrowth of the attached biomass to the support particles (Extendospheres) induced bed stratification by provoking agglutination of the particles and supporting their washout by sedimentation, which contributed to unstable bioprocess performance at the organic loading rates (OLRs) between 0.5 and 5 kg COD m?3 day?1. An applied OLR above 2 kg COD m?3 day?1 additionally promoted acidification and strongly influenced the microbial composition and dynamics. Hydrogenotrophic methanogens appeared to be the mostly affected group by the Extendospheres particle washout as a decrease in their abundance was observed by quantitative PCR analysis towards the end of the trial, although the specific methanogenic activity and maximum substrate utilisation rate on H2/CO2 indicated high metabolic activity and preference towards hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis of the reactor biomass at this stage. The bacterial community in the bioreactor monitored via denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) also suggested an influence of OLR stress on bacterial community structure and population dynamics. The data presented in this work can provide useful information in future optimisation of fluidised reactors intended for digestion of complex industrial wastewaters during LtAD.  相似文献

Treatment of distillery spentwash by hybrid UASB reactor   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A laboratory-scale hybrid UASB reactor, which combined an UASB in the lower part and a filter in the upper part, was used for the treatment of distillery spentwash. The reactor was operated under ambient conditions for 380 days. Using anaerobically digested sewage sludge as a seed, the start-up of the reactor and the cultivation of active granular sludge was completed within three months period. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observation of the granules showed the presence of Mehtanonthrix-like bacteria as the dominant species. Following the start-up the organic loading rate (OLR) was increased, stepwise, to 36 kg COD/m3 · d at a constant hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h. COD removal efficiency was 80% even at a high OLR of 36 kg COD/m3 · d. Biogas rich in methane content (80%), with a maximum specific biogas yield of 0.40 m3 CH4/kg · COD was produced. Polypropylene pall rings filter medium in the upper-third of the reactor was very effective as a gas-liquid-solid (GLS) separator, and retained the biomass in addition. The study indicated that hybrid UASB is a very feasible alternative for the treatment of high-strength wastewaters like distillery spentwash.  相似文献

The supernatant of hydrothermally treated sludge was treated by an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor for a 550-days running test. The hydrothermal parameter was 170 °C for 60 min. An mesophilic 8.6 L UASB reactor was seeded with floc sludge. The final organic loading rate (OLR) could reach 18 kg COD/m3 d. At the initial stage running for 189 days, the feed supernatant was diluted, and the OLR reached 11 kg COD/m3 d. After 218 days, the reactor achieved a high OLR, and the supernatant was pumped into the reactor without dilution. The influent COD fluctuated from 20,000 to 30,000 mg/L and the COD removal rate remained at approximately 70%. After 150 days, granular sludge was observed. The energy balance calculation show that heating 1.0 kg sludge needs 0.34 MJ of energy, whereas biogas energy from the supernatant of the heated sludge is 0.43 MJ.  相似文献

Summary Two stirred tank digesters were operated with biomass retention by internal settling during effluent removal. In one digester a flocculating agent was used to enhance microbial aggregation and settling. The unflocculated digester achieved a maximum stable loading rate of 8–8.5kg COD/m3. day and biomass density of 19.3g VSS/l compared to the flocculated digester which achieved a (non-maximal) stable loading rate of 12.3kg COD/m3. day and biomass density of 43.3g VSS/l. Both digesters had a COD conversion efficiency greater than 97%. Operation of a stirred tank digester in a mix/settle mode allows a significant increase in biomass levels over conventional continuously stirred digesters. The addition of a chemical flocculant significantly enhances this improvement.  相似文献

Membrane bioreactors can replace the activated sludge process and the final clarification step in municipal wastewater treatment. The combination of bioreactor and crossflow microfiltration allows for a high chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction of synthetic wastewater. From biomass, grown at high production rates in the aerobic bioreactor, energy rich biogas can be obtained in a subsequent anaerobic bioreactor. In this paper, experimental data from a laboratory scale membrane bioreactor are presented. The degradation of synthetic wastewater at short hydraulic retention times down to 1.5 h has been studied. The organic loading rate (OLR) has been varied in the range of 6-13 kg m(-3) per day. At steady state a high quality filtrate could be obtained at different operating conditions. At biomass concentrations of 10-22 g l(-1), COD reduction was above 95%.  相似文献

In the present study, an attempt has been made to treat dairy wastewater entirely via anaerobic treatment over a period of 215 days, using two-stage Hybrid Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (HUASB) reactors, which offer the advantages associated both with fixed film and upflow sludge blanket treatments. A HUASB with polyurethane foam cubes was used for stage I, and a HUASB utilizing PVC-cut rings was used for stage II. The output from stage I was used as the input for stage II. The two-stage reactor was operated at an organic loading rate that varied from 10.7 to 21.4 kg COD m3/d for a period of 215 days, including the start-up period. The ideal organic loading rate for the two-stage reactor was 19.2 kg COD/m3/d. A further 21.4 kg COD m3/d increase in the organic loading rate resulted in the souring of the reactor function in stage I, which consequently reduced the overall reactor performance. Combined COD removal during the stable operation period (10.7 to 19.2 kg COD m3/d) occurred in a range between 97 and 99%. The methane content in the biogas varied from 65 to 70% in stage I, and from 63 to 66% in stage II. The two-stage anaerobic treatment using HUASB with PUF and PVC described in this work is expected to constitute a better alternative for the complete treatment of dairy wastewater than high-rate anaerobic, anaerobic/aerobic, and two-phase anaerobic treatment methods.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the static granular bed reactor (SGBR), a chemical oxygen demand (COD) balance was used along with a mathematical model. The SGBR was operated with an organic loading rate (OLR) ranging from 0.8 to 5.5 kg/m3 day at 24 °C. The average COD removal efficiency was 87.4%, and the removal efficiencies of COD, carbohydrates, and proteins increased with an OLR, while the lipids removal efficiency was not a function of an OLR. From the results of the COD balance, the yield of biomass increased with an OLR. The SGBR was modeled using the general transport equation considering advection, diffusion, and degradation by microorganisms, and the first-order reaction rate constant was 0.0166/day. The simulation results were in excellent agreement with experimental data. In addition, the SGBR model provided mechanistic insight into why the COD removal efficiency in the SGBR is proportional to an OLR.  相似文献

A study was performed to assess the feasibility of anaerobic treatment of slaughterhouse wastewaters in a UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) reactor and in an AF (Anaerobic Filter). Among the different streams generated, the slaughter line showed the highest organic content with an average COD of 8000 mg/l, of which 70% was proteins. The suspended solids content represented between 15 and 30% of the COD. Both reactors had a working volume of 21. They were operated at 37°C. The UASB reactor was run at OLR (Organic Loading Rates) of 1–6.5 kg COD/m3/day. The COD removal was 90% for OLR up to 5 kg COD/m3/day and 60% for an OLR of 6.5 kg COD/m3/day. For similar organic loading rates, the AF showed lower removal efficiencies and lower percentages of methanization. At higher OLR sludge, flotation occurred and consequently the active biomass was washed out from the filter. The results indicated that anaerobic treatment systems are applicable to slaughterhouse wastewaters and that the UASB reactor shows a better performance, giving higher COD removal efficiencies than the AF.  相似文献

A novel and high‐rate anaerobic sequencing bath reactor (ASBR) process was used to evaluate the hydrogen productivity of an acid‐enriched sewage sludge microflora at a temperature of 35 °C. In this ASBR process a 4 h cycle, including feed, reaction, settle, and decant steps, was repeatedly performed in a 5 L reactor. The sucrose substrate concentration was 20 g COD/L; the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was maintained at 12–120 h at the initial period and thereafter at 4–12 h. The reaction/settle period ratio, which is the most important parameter for ASBR operation was 1.7. The experimental results indicated that the hydrogenic activity of the sludge microflora was HRT‐dependent and that proper pH control was necessary for a stable operation of the bioreactor. The peak hydrogenic activity value was attained at an HRT of 8 h and an organic loading rate of 80 kg COD/m3 × day. Each mole of sucrose in the reactor produced 2.8 mol of hydrogen and each gram of biomass produced 39 mmol of hydrogen per day. An overly‐short HRT might deteriorate the hydrogen productivity. The concentration ratios of butyric acid to’acetic acid, as well as volatile fatty acid and soluble microbial products to alkalinity can be used as monitoring indicators for the hydrogenic bioreactor.  相似文献

The effect of hydraulic loading rate (HLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the bioremediation of municipal wastewater using a pilot scale subsurface horizontal flow constructed treatment wetland (HFCTW) vegetated with Cyprus papyrus was investigated. Different HLRs were applied to the treatment system namely 0.18, 0.10, and 0.07 m3/m2. d with corresponding HRTs of 1.8, 3.2, and 4.7 days, respectively. The flow rate was 8 m3/d, and the average organic loading rate (OLR) was 0.037 kg BOD/m3/d. Results showed that the performance of the HFCTW was linearly affected by decreasing the HLR and increasing the HRT. The highest treatment efficiency was achieved at HRT (4.7 days) and HLR (0.07 m3/m2. d). The percentage reductions of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and total suspended solids (TSS) were 86%, 87%, and 80%, respectively. Satisfactory nutrient removal was obtained. Also, removal of 2–3 logs of bacterial indicators of pollution was achieved. The dry biomass of Cyperus was 7.7 kg/m2 and proved to be very efficient in nitrification processes due to high diversity of the roots that increase the treatment surface area.  相似文献

A static granular bed reactor (SGBR) was used to treat swine wastewater at 24 and 16 °C. At 24 °C, the organic loading rate (OLR) was 0.7-5.4 kg COD/m3 day and the average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was 88.5%, respectively. Meanwhile, at 16 °C, the OLR was 1.6-4.0 kg COD/m3 day and the average COD removal efficiency was 68.0%, respectively. The SGBR acted as a bioreactor as well as a biofilter. After backwashing, the recovery of COD removal was not a function of an OLR but recovery time, while that of TSS removal was not a function of either recovery time or the OLR. The maximum substrate utilization rate (kmax) ratio was 1.89 between 24 and 16 °C, and the half velocity constant (Ks) ratio was 1.22, and the maximum specific growth rate (μmax) ratio was 4.71. In addition, the temperature-activity coefficient in this study was determined to be 1.09.  相似文献

Biological kinetic (bio-kinetic) study of the anaerobic stabilization pond treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME) was carried out in a laboratory anaerobic bench scale reactor (ABSR). The reactor was operated at different feed flow-rates of 0.63, 0.76, 0.95, 1.27, 1.9 and 3.8 l of raw POME for a day. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) as influent substrates was selected for bio-kinetic study. The investigation showed that the growth yield (YG), specific biomass decay (b), maximum specific biomass growth rate (μmax), saturation constant (Ks) and critical retention time (Θc) were in the range of 0.990 g VSS/g CODremoved day, 0.024 day−1, 0.524 day−1, 203.433 g COD l−1 and 1.908 day, respectively.  相似文献

Membrane bioreactors (MBR) technology for wastewater offers many advantages over conventional technologies such as high effluent quality, less footprint and others. The main disadvantage of membrane bioreactors (MBR) is related to membrane fouling, which is mainly caused by extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP). This research studied EPS and SMP dynamics at different heights of a submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (SAMBR). The SAMBR was operated under two organic loading rates (OLR) (0.79 and 1.56 kg/m3 d) and was fed with synthetic wastewater with glucose as the carbon source. The results showed percentages of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal above 95% and the highest COD removal rates were observed at the bottom of the reactor (>83%) for both OLR. The EPS showed a stratification with highest quantities in the supernatant. For the SMP the highest concentration was in the bottom of SAMBR where utilization predominated associated products whereas in the SAMBR supernatant predominated biomass associated products. The OLR change led to a significant increase in SMP accumulation but not in EPS. These facts showed that EPS and SMP dynamic in the SAMBR seemed to be mainly influenced by biological activity, total suspended solids concentration and substrate composition.  相似文献

A 19.2 l multiplate anaerobic reactor (MPAR) was used to assess the impact of lime (Ca(OH)2) on the anaerobic treatment of whey permeate effluents. The amount of Ca(OH)2 required to maintain the pH of the whey permeate around 5 ranged between 3.0 and 4.5 kg/m3, which corresponded to concentration varying between 1.62 and 2.43 kg/m3. Soluble chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency exceeded 92% with a methane production rate of 6.7 m3/m3.d. at an organic loading rate (OLR) as high as 20 kg COD/m3.d. Extended operation of the MPAR resulted in the accumulation of significant amounts of calcium precipitates in the sludge bed which reached after three months of operation 0.19, 0.25 and 0.33 kg Ca2+ per kg of suspended solid (SS) in the lower, the middle and the upper compartment of the MPAR, respectively. The volatile suspended solids to suspended solids ratio (VSS/SS) decreased from 0.83 in inoculum to 0.37, 0.22 and 0.08 in the lower, the middle and the upper compartment of the MPAR, respectively. As a result, the soluble COD reduction and the methane production rate decreased to 31% and to 2.3 m3/m3.d. respectively, at OLR of 20 kg COD/m3.d.The authors thank Saputo Cheese Ltd. for providing the whey permeate effluents, Alain Corriveau for expert analytical assistance and Hervé Macarie for revising the article. Ozonation pretreatment was applied to palm oil mill effluent (POME) prior to anaerobic digestion using the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR). Ozonation increased BOD/COD by 37.9% with a COD loss of only 3.3%. At organic loads of 6.48-12.96 kg COD/m3/d, feeding with non-ozonated POME caused a system failure. The ozonated POME gave significantly higher TCOD removal at loadings 6.52 and 9.04 kg COD/m3/d but failed to sustain the operation at loading 11.67 kg COD/m3/d. Effects of cycle time (CT) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) were determined using quadratic regression model. The generated response surface and contour plot showed that at this high load conditions (6.52-11.67 kg COD/m3/d), longer HRT and shorter CT gave the ASBR higher organic removal efficiency and methane yield. The model was able to satisfactorily describe the relationship of these two key operating parameters.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the organic loading rate on the performance of an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating olive mill effluent (OME), based on the following indicators: (i) chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency; and (ii) effluent variability (phenol, suspended solids, volatile fatty acids, and pH stability). The UASB reactor was operated under different operational conditions (OLRs between 0.45 and 32 kg COD/m3·day) for 477 days. The results demonstrated that the UASB reactor could tolerate high influent COD concentrations. Removal efficiencies for the studied pollution parameters were found to be as follows: COD, 47∼92%; total phenol, 34∼75%; color, 6∼46%; suspended solids, 34∼76%. The levels of VFAs in the influent varied between 310 and 1,750 mg/L. Our measurements of the VFA levels indicated that some of the effluent COD could be attributed to VFAs (principally acetate, butyrate, iso-butyrate, and propionate) in the effluent, which occurred at levels between 345 and 2,420 mg/L. As the OLRs were increased, more VFAs were measured in the effluent. A COD removal efficiency of 90% could be achieved as long as OLR was kept at a level of less than 10 kg COD/m3·day. However, a secondary treatment unit for polishing purposes is necessary to comply with discharge standards.  相似文献
