Presentations at the 2008 meeting of the American Electrophoresis Society dealt with many aspects of this key separation technology. In total, there were 65 technical talks and 13 posters in a 4-day meeting. The proteomics technical talks described applications of 1D and 2D gel electrophoresis, capillary electrophoresis and microscale platforms. Some new platforms may find use in future proteomics research.

Report on the first congress of the Spanish Proteomics Society

This report describes the first congress of the Spanish Proteomics Society (SEProt) and the Foundation Meeting of the European Proteomics Association (EuPA), which were held in Cordoba, Spain, February 13-17, 2005. The EuPA meeting joined together thirty European representatives from 17 national European proteomics organisations to discuss the opportunity of creating a supranational association aimed to promote all aspects of proteomics as a scientific discipline throughout Europe. The main subjects of the SEProt congress, which was attended by over 350 researchers mainly from Spain and other European countries, were the current status and applications of proteomics in medical and biological sciences.     

Further advances in the development of a data interchange standard for proteomics data

The Protein Standards Initiative (PSI) aims to define community standards for data representation in proteomics and to facilitate data comparison, exchange and verification. Significant progress was made in advancing the design and implementation of a draft standard for exchanging experimental data from proteomics experiments involving mass spectrometry at the 51st Annual Conference of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. In collaboration with the American Society for Tests and Measurements, the PSI propose to publish this first draft at the forthcoming HUPO 2nd World Congress in Montreal, 8-11 October 2003.     

24th Annual Meeting of the American Electrophoresis Society

Presentations at the 2007 meeting of the American Electrophoresis Society covered many aspects of this key separation technology. In total there were three plenary speakers, two invited talks, 85 technical talks and 14 posters in a 5-day meeting. The three plenary speakers presented their work with each of them discussing somewhat different multiplexed proteomics approaches. The invited speakers discussed ways to improve resolution and shorten running times in proteomic and genomic separations. The proteomics technical talks described applications of 1D and 2D gel electrophoresis, capillary electrophoresis and micro-scale platforms. This report is limited to a small number of those presentations that discussed proteomics directly.

Announcing the call for the Special Issue on the 20th International Congress of the International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB)—virtual meeting,October 2021

This Commentary describes a call for submissions for the upcoming Special Issue focused on the science presented at the 20^th IUPAB Congress to be held in conjunction with the 45^th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Biophysical Society and the 49^th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 20^th International IUPAB Congress will take place as a virtual meeting this year from October 4 to 8, 2021. This triennial IUPAB Congress will be held in loose conjunction with the 45^th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Biophysical Society and the 49^th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. To act as a complement to this virtual meeting, the Biophysical Reviews journal will base a Special Issue on the scientific topics of the meeting contributors selected from the range of invited speakers and poster presenters. This Special Issue will also work to highlight the host country’s (Brazil) National Biophysical Society. Finally, this Special Issue will also serve to publish the meeting abstracts in supplemental form.Review articles from IUPAB Congress speakers and poster presenters to the IUPAB Congress and associated conferences (the 45^th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Biophysical Society and the 49^th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) are solicited. Similar to the SI based on the 19^th IUPAB Congress held in Edinburgh summarizing Commentaries from session chairs are also requested (Hall and dos Remedios 2017). The Special Issue for the 20^th IUPAB International Congress will be prepared and edited by the current authors (Rosangela Itri, Mauricio Baptista, Richard Garratt, and Antonio Jose Costa-Filho).     

Purification and immunological characterization of catfish (Heteropneustes fossilis) metallothionein

Summary Catfish hepatic metallothionein was purified to homogeneity by Sephadex G-75 gel filtration, DEAF-Sephadex A-25 column chromatography and preparative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Induction by cadmium and zinc, characteristic UV spectrum, cadmium binding property and its low MW established that it was a metallothionein. Antibody was raised in rabbit against catfish metallothionein. Catfish antimetallothionein cross-reacted with other fish metallothioneins but not with chicken or rodent metallothionein. Catfish metallothionein is more electronegative as compared to mouse, rat, chicken or hamster metallothionein. Basic Science and The NIH

The following is an edited version of the Keynote Speech delivered at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology by Harold Varmus, Director of the National Institutes of Health. The address, entitled Basic Science and the NIH, was given at the opening of the meeting in New Orleans on December 11, 1993. It was Varmus' first public policy talk as NIH Director.     

IBC's 21st Annual Antibody Engineering and 8th Annual Antibody Therapeutics International Conferences and 2010 Annual Meeting of The Antibody Society

The 21^st Annual Antibody Engineering and 8^th Annual Antibody Therapeutics international conferences, and the 2010 Annual Meeting of The Antibody Society, organized by IBC Life Sciences with contributions from The Antibody Society and two Scientific Advisory Boards, was held December 5–9, 2010 in San Diego, CA. The conferences featured over 100 presentations and 100 posters, and included a pre-conference workshop on deep-sequencing of antibody genes. The total number of delegates exceeded 800, which set a new attendance record for the conference.

The conferences were organized with a focus on antibody engineering only on the first day and a joint engineering/therapeutics session on the last day. Delegates could select from presentations that occurred in two simultaneous sessions on days 2 and 3. Day 1 included presentations on neutralizing antibodies and the identification of vaccine targets, as well as a historical overview of 20 years of phage display utilization. Topics presented in the Antibody Engineering sessions on day 2 and 3 included antibody biosynthesis, structure and stability; antibodies in a complex environment; antibody half-life; and targeted nanoparticle therapeutics. In the Antibody Therapeutics sessions on days 2 and 3, preclinical and early stage development and clinical updates of antibody therapeutics, including TRX518, SYM004, MM111, PRO140, CVX-241, ASG-5ME, U3-1287 (AMG888), R1507 and trastuzumab emtansine, were discussed and perspectives were provided on the development of biosimilar and biobetter antibodies, including coverage of regulatory and intellectual property issues. The joint engineering/therapeutics session on the last day focused on bispecific and next-generation antibodies. Summaries of most of the presentations are included here, but, due to the large number of speakers, it was not possible to include summaries for every presentation.

Delegates enjoyed the splendid views of the San Diego Bay and proximity to the Gaslamp Quarter provided by the venue. The 22^nd Annual Antibody Engineering and 9th Annual Antibody Therapeutics conferences, and the 2011 Annual Meeting of The Antibody Society, are planned for December 5–8, 2011 at the same location in San Diego, and will include two two-day short courses on Introduction to Antibody Engineering and Protein Characterization for Biotechnology Product Development.
