The main concern of this paper is with survival or extinction of predators in models of predator-prey systems exhibiting group defence of the prey. It is shown that if there is no mutual interference among predators, enrichment could result in their extinction. However, if there is mutual interference, the predator population survives (at least deterministically). Two models for competition of two populations in a chemostat environment with nutrient recycling are considered. In the first model, the recycling is instantaneous, whereas in the second, the recycling is delayed. For each model an equilibrium analysis is carried out, and persistence criteria are obtained. This paper extends the work done by Beretta et al. (1990) for a single species.Research partially supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Grant NSERC A4823Research carried out at the University of Alberta while on a Canada-China Scholarly Exchange Program  相似文献

Summary A predator-prey system is proposed in which the prey species consists of three genotypes. It is shown that in the case of no predation, this system satisfies the Hardy-Weinberg principle. In the case where the genotype with the recessive gene has an advantage in its susceptibility to predation, it is shown that the other genotypes move toward extinction. In previous work (Freedman and Wolkowicz, 1986;Bull. math. Biol. 48, 493–508) it was shown that in a predator-prey system where the prey population exhibits group defence, it is possible that enrichment of the environment could lead to extinction of the predator population. In this paper a third population is introduced and criteria are derived under which persistence of all populations will occur. In particular, criteria for a superpredator and for a competitor to stabilize the system in the sense of persistence are analyzed. Predator-prey models where one or more terms involve ratios of the predator and prey populations may not be valid mathematically unless it can be shown that solutions with positive initial conditions never get arbitrarily close to the axis in question, i.e. that persistence holds. By means of a transformation of variables, criteria for persistence are derived for two classes of such models, thereby leading to their validity. Although local extinction certainly is a common occurrence in nature, it cannot be modeled by systems which are ratio-dependent near the axes. A model of competition between plasmid-bearing and plasmid-free organisms in a chemostat was proposed in a paper of Stephanopoulis and Lapidus. The model was in the form of a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Such models are relevant to commercial production by genetically altered organisms in continuous culture. The analysis there was local (using index arguments). This paper provides a mathematically rigorous analysis of the global asymptotic behavior of the governing equations in the case of uninhibited specific growth rate.Research supported by the National Council of Science, Republic of ChinaResearch supported by National Science Foundation Grant, DMS-9204490Research supported by the Natural Science and Engineering Council of Canada. Predator-prey populations with parasitic infection   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
A predator-prey model, where both species are subjected to parasitism, is developed and analyzed. For the case where there is coexistence of the predator with the uninfected prey, an epidemic threshold theorem is proved. It is shown that in the case where the uninfected predator cannot survive only on uninfected prey, the parasitization could lead to persistence of the predator provided a certain threshold of transmission is surpassed.Support by the Central Research Fund of the University of Alberta is gratefully acknowledgedResearch partially supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Grant No. NSERC A4823  相似文献

In this paper we simulate the simultaneous responses of 45 neurones within a hypothetical retina to a variety of spatio-temporal signals. Our results demonstrate how specific convergent and divergent excitatory and inhibitory connections are sufficient to determine signal response selectivity of specific ganglion cells and so delimit the known types of center-surround receptive fields. This work was partially supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada under Grant A-4345 to M.N.O. and Grant A-4395 to T.M.C. through the University of Alberta  相似文献

Models of single-species and predator-prey systems in a polluted closed environment are developed and partially analyzed. Three cases are considered: a single influx of toxicant, a constant influx of toxicant, and a periodic pollution of the environment. In the case of single-species growth we are able to determine some local and global dynamics. In the case of predator-prey systems, we investigate the existence of steady states for a small constant influx of toxicant. On leave from Department of Mathematics, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, IndiaResearch partially supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Grant No. NSERC A4823  相似文献

A system of ordinary differential equations is used to model the interactions of n competing predators on a single prey population in a chemostat environment with a periodic nutrient input. In the case of one or no predators, criteria for the existence of periodic solutions are given. In the general case, conditions for all populations to persist are derived.Research is in part based on a Ph.D. thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of AlbertaResearch is partly supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Grant No. NSERC A4823  相似文献

Movements against a variety of loads are relatively invariant in form. These movements are controlled in general by antagonistic groups of muscles. In this paper optimal control strategies are computed for coupling antagonistic muscles so as to minimize deviations from a desired trajectory. Simulations are presented for linear and nonlinear decision functions linking control of the two muscles for a variety of movements in a way that may be compared with experimental observations. This work was partly supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Grant NSERC OGP-4345 and by the Medical Research Council of Canada Grant MRC PG-47 through the University of Alberta  相似文献

Recording from multiple electrodes at different sites along a peripheral nerve permits the application of powerful filtering methods to extract the activity of populations of fibres within the nerve which differ in temporal or spectral characteristics. The design of optimal linear filters is initially treated as a general problem in the calculus of variations in which the signals from one population of nerve fibres are extracted so as to minimize those from a second population of nerve fibres or from other sources (noise). A particularly important application arises when the signals at two electrodes are related by weighting functions. In the simplest example the weighting function represents the time delay for nerve impulses to conduct from one electrode to the other, but explicit results are also derivable when there are a range of conduction delays with probabilities distributed according to well-known functions such as the sinc2 function. This work was partially supported by the National Research Council of Canada and Medical Research Council of Canada by Grant NRC A-4345 to MNO and Grant MRC MA-3307 to RBS through the University of Alberta  相似文献

Existence of traveling wave solutions in a diffusive predator-prey model   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We establish the existence of traveling front solutions and small amplitude traveling wave train solutions for a reaction-diffusion system based on a predator-prey model with Holling type-II functional response. The traveling front solutions are equivalent to heteroclinic orbits in R 4 and the small amplitude traveling wave train solutions are equivalent to small amplitude periodic orbits in R 4 . The methods used to prove the results are the shooting argument and the Hopf bifurcation theorem. This paper extends recent analyses (Roberts and Hartline, 1975; Ouztöreli and Stein, 1977) of optimal linear filters for separating neural signals from more than one electrode site. Roberts and Hartline's result, using a matched filter criterion, represents one of a class of optimal filters with different, but symmetrical, output waveforms derived by Ouztöreli and Stein (1977). Another narrow bandwidth filter of this class will give the optimal results according to an energy criterion, but may be less useful in practical situations. This work was partially supported by the Medical Research Council of Canada (Grant MRC-MT3307), the Technical Research Council of Denmark (Grant 516-6703 E406) and the National Research Council of Canada (Grant NRC A-4345)  相似文献

Most models of muscle have assumed that the series elastic element has a constant stiffness, although experimentally this is not true, either at the level of individual cross-bridges or that of the whole muscle. In this paper elastic and viscous elements are introduced whose properties vary systematically with activity levels as has been found experimentally. The effects of these nonlinear variations on the methods for optimally controlling a pair of antagonistic muscles are calculated. Although the nonlinearities add some complexity to the derivation and are important to the mechanism of force generation in the muscle, they do not qualitatively change the overall control of movement. This work was partly supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada NSERC OGP-4345 and by the Medical Research Council of Canada Grant PG-47 through the University of Alberta  相似文献

An evolutionary game model is developed that incorporates both spatial dispersion and density effects in the evolutionary dynamic. It is shown that a stable equilibrium (e.g. an evolutionarily stable strategy) of the non-dispersed frequency dynamic becomes a stable equilibrium of the larger system if population density stabilizes at these fixed frequencies. It is also shown, by example, that other equilibria, whose frequencies change from one location to another, may appear when dispersal rates are relatively small.Research supported by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Operating Grant A6187Research supported by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Operating Grant A7822  相似文献

In the present work a linear model for a pair of antogonistic muscles is analysed. Each constituent muscle in this model is identical to ones considered previously (Stein and Ouztöreli, 1976). Analytical properties of the antagonistic muscles and dynamics of the system are described and some numerical results are discussed. The natural modes of the system are determined by a fourth order polynomial, which most commonly has one pair of conjugate complex roots and two negative real roots. The filtering of neural inputs through the active state properties of the muscle increases the order of the system to fifth order for these inputs. This work was partly supported by the National Scientific and Engineering Research Council of Canada Grant NRC-A4345 and by the Medical Research Council of Canada Grant MRC-MT-3307 through the University of Alberta  相似文献

A model of a predator-prey interaction, where the prey population consists of three genotypes with random mating and continuous, nonlinear birth and death processes with fertility differences, is proposed. Sufficiency conditions giving the existence of a globally stable equilibrium on one of the coordinate planes are given. This extends results of Freedman and Waltman [J. Math. Biol. 6, 367–374 (1978) andRocky Mountain J. Math. 12, 779–784 (1982)]. In addition, conditions are derived which guarantee the persistence of all components of the populations. The most common form of measuring electrical responses of nerve cells is the recording of a given cell's spike train profile to the parameters of a given input signal. In this paper we consider the conditions under which it is possible to relate such response measures to (a) the properties of the cell's underlying activity characteristics, (b) the neural network, and (c) the input signal. This work was partially supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada under Grant A-4345 to M.N.O. and under Grant A-4395 to T.M.C. through the University of Alberta  相似文献

A class of integral recursion models for the growth and spread of a synchronized single-species population is studied. It is well known that if there is no overcompensation in the fecundity function, the recursion has an asymptotic spreading speed c*, and that this speed can be characterized as the speed of the slowest non-constant traveling wave solution. A class of integral recursions with overcompensation which still have asymptotic spreading speeds can be found by using the ideas introduced by Thieme (J Reine Angew Math 306:94–121, 1979) for the study of space-time integral equation models for epidemics. The present work gives a large subclass of these models with overcompensation for which the spreading speed can still be characterized as the slowest speed of a non-constant traveling wave. To illustrate our results, we numerically simulate a series of traveling waves. The simulations indicate that, depending on the properties of the fecundity function, the tails of the waves may approach the carrying capacity monotonically, may approach the carrying capacity in an oscillatory manner, or may oscillate continually about the carrying capacity, with its values bounded above and below by computable positive numbers.
