Groups of juvenile chum salmon were reared on food that was either dispersed throughout, or localized in one area of, the rearing tank. Groups receiving localized food displayed more aggression than those receiving dispersed food. This led to differences in growth, with fish reared on localized food having greater individual growth variability, i.e. growth depensation. However, after several months of rearing in these different feeding/social environments, fish reared on dispersed food were just as aggressive when first exposed to localized food as were fish reared on localized food. Furthermore, in competitive contests between fish of the two rearing histories, those reared on dispersed food were just as likely to become dominant as those reared on localized food. These results suggest that the behavioural development of aggressiveness is not amenable to alteration by manipulation of food distribution.  相似文献

Summary Ion uptake by dry bean root systems was examined during a three day treatment period. Three aeration treatments were applied to split root systems where both halves were aerated, both halves were nonaerated and one half aerated and the remaining half nonaerated (localized anoxia). Ion absorption was similar for the aerated control and localized anoxia treatments. The nonaerated control absorbed 2, 40, and 60 percent of the aerated control for K+, Ca++, and NO3 , respectively. Ion absorption by stressed plants appeared to increase directly with root growth in the aerated portions of the localized anoxia treatments. Localized anoxia resulted in greater potassium ion uptake per unit root weight and in greater root respiration rates of the aerated half of the Pinto III cultivar root system. Transpiration rates of Seafarer subjected to localized anoxia were 135% of the aerated control. The additional water use may have contributed to greater ion uptake, by mass flow, in the nonaerated portion of the localized anoxia treatment. Nutrient solutions of the nonaerated controls became more alkaline during stress than did the nonaerated portions of the localized anoxia treatments, indicating a possible direct or indirect effect of the aerated portions of the localized anoxia treatments on the corresponding nonaerated half. Compensation in ion uptake by dry bean roots subjected to localized anoxia appeared to be the result of increased root growth, greater respiration rates, greater transpiration rates and, for Pinto III, an increase in the ion uptake rate per unit root weight. This compensatory uptake of water and nutrients by the root system may be one mechanism by which roots overcome localized stress within a soil profile.  相似文献

ENK was localized mainly in adrenaline cells, 70%-80% of which were heavily labelled. About 5%-10% of the noradrenaline cells were ENK-immunoreactive (IR). A dense network of ENK-IR nerves was localized among adrenaline cells. NT was localized only in the noradrenaline cells, 60%-70% of which were immunoreactive. NT- and ENK-IR were localized in separate noradrenaline cells. A dense network of NT-IR nerves was restricted among noradrenaline cells. The present findings confirm that ENK- and NT-like peptides are localized in separate adrenal medullary cells and demonstrate that also the preganglionic nerves are divided in subpopulations according to their neuropeptide content. These nerves have a selective localization among adrenaline and noradrenaline cells and may have physiological significance in the control of secretion of catecholamines and neuropeptides from adrenal medulla.  相似文献

The localization of the planar cell polarity proteins Vang12, frizzled-3, Vang11, and Celsr1 in the rat incisors was examined using immunocytochemistry. The results showed that Vang12 was localized at two regions of the Tomes' processes of inner enamel-secretory ameloblasts in rat incisors: a proximal and a distal region. In contrast, frizzled-3 was localized at adherens junctions of the proximal and distal areas of inner enamel- and outer enamel-secretory ameloblasts, where N-cadherin and β-catenin were localized. frizzled-3 was also localized in differentiating inner enamel epithelial cells. Vang11 was localized sparsely in differentiating preameloblasts and extensively at the cell boundary of stratum intermedium. Celsr1 was not localized in ameloblasts but localized in odontoblasts extensively. These results suggest the involvement of planar cell polarity proteins in odontogenesis.  相似文献

Identification and cloning of localized maternal RNAs from Xenopus eggs   总被引:59,自引:0,他引:59  
A central question in developmental biology is to explain how cells in different regions of an embryo acquire different developmental fates. We have begun to address this question by investigating whether specific RNAs are localized within a frog egg. Differential screening of a cDNA library shows that most maternal RNAs are uniformly distributed along the animal-vegetal axis. However, we find that a rare class of maternal RNAs is localized. cDNA clones of four localized RNAs have been characterized. Three of these cDNAs are derived from maternal RNAs that are concentrated in the animal hemisphere of unfertilized eggs and remain localized through the early blastula stage. One cDNA is derived from a maternal RNA found almost exclusively in the vegetal hemisphere at both stages. These studies show that some informational molecules, specifically RNAs, are localized in eggs and are inherited by particular blastomeres.  相似文献

The transition from localized to systemic spreading of bacteria, viruses, and other agents is a fundamental problem that spans medicine, ecology, biology, and agriculture science. We have conducted experiments and simulations in a simple one-dimensional system to determine the spreading of bacterial populations that occurs for an inhomogeneous environment under the influence of external convection. Our system consists of a long channel with growth inhibited by uniform ultraviolet (UV) illumination except in a small "oasis", which is shielded from the UV light. To mimic blood flow or other flow past a localized infection, the oasis is moved with a constant velocity through the UV-illuminated "desert". The experiments are modeled with a convective reaction-diffusion equation. In both the experiment and model, localized or extinct populations are found to develop, depending on conditions, from an initially localized population. The model also yields states where the population grows everywhere. Further, the model reveals that the transitions between localized, extended, and extinct states are continuous and nonhysteretic. However, it does not capture the oscillations of the localized population that are observed in the experiment.  相似文献

The existence of spatially localized solutions in neural networks is an important topic in neuroscience as these solutions are considered to characterize working (short-term) memory. We work with an unbounded neural network represented by the neural field equation with smooth firing rate function and a wizard hat spatial connectivity. Noting that stationary solutions of our neural field equation are equivalent to homoclinic orbits in a related fourth order ordinary differential equation, we apply normal form theory for a reversible Hopf bifurcation to prove the existence of localized solutions; further, we present results concerning their stability. Numerical continuation is used to compute branches of localized solution that exhibit snaking-type behaviour. We describe in terms of three parameters the exact regions for which localized solutions persist.  相似文献

Precise localization of individual proteins is required for processes such as motility, chemotaxis, cell-cycle progression, and cell division in bacteria, but the number of proteins that are localized in bacterial species is not known. A screen based on transposon mutagenesis and fluorescence activated cell sorting was devised to identify large numbers of localized proteins, and employed in Caulobacter crescentus. From a sample of the clones isolated in the screen, eleven proteins with no previously characterized localization in C. crescentus were identified, including six hypothetical proteins. The localized hypothetical proteins included one protein that was localized in a helix-like structure, and two proteins for which the localization changed as a function of the cell cycle, suggesting that complex three-dimensional patterns and cell cycle-dependent localization are likely to be common in bacteria. Other mutants produced localized fusion proteins even though the transposon has inserted near the 5' end of a gene, demonstrating that short peptides can contain sufficient information to localize bacterial proteins. The screen described here could be used in most bacterial species.  相似文献

Polarity is achieved partly through the localized assembly of the cytoskeleton. During growth in budding yeast, the bud cortex and neck localized formins Bni1p and Bnr1p nucleate and assemble actin cables that extend along the bud-mother axis, providing tracks for secretory vesicle delivery. Localized formins are believed to determine the location and polarity of cables, hence growth. However, yeast expressing the nonlocalized actin nucleating/assembly formin homology (FH) 1-FH2 domains of Bnr1p or Bni1p as the sole formin grow well. Although cables are significantly disorganized, analysis of directed transport of secretory vesicles is still biased toward the bud, reflecting a bias in correctly oriented cables, thereby permitting polarized growth. Myosin II, localized at the bud neck, contributes to polarized growth as a mutant unable to interact with F-actin further compromises growth in cells with an unlocalized formin but not with a localized formin. Our results show that multiple mechanisms contribute to cable orientation and polarized growth, with localized formins and myosin II being two major contributors.  相似文献

This study defines the time period during which the cellular components that specify comb plates and photocytes become localized in different parts of blastomeres prior to their segregation to separate daughter cells. At the two-cell stage the factors which specify comb plates are localized at the aboral pole of the blastomeres. There is not a significant localization of the factors which specify comb plates and photocytes along the tentacular axis of the embryo. At the four-cell stage, the factors which specify comb plates become localized at one end of the tentacular axis of the blastomeres; however, the factors which specify photocytes have not yet become localized. At the eight-cell stage, the factors which specify these two cell types are segregated to different blastomeres.The role of cleavage in setting up these localized regions of developmental potential has been studied by reversibly inhibiting selected cleavages. After the first division, the pattern of cleavage that follows a period of cleavage inhibition corresponds to the pattern occurring in untreated embryos that began development at the same time. This situation is similar to the “clock” system, which controls many aspects of the pattern of cleavage in sea urchin embryos. The extent to which the factors that specify comb plates and photocytes become localized in a given region of a blastomere is correlated with the kind of cleavage which occurs after a block. Most of the activity involved in localizing developmental potential takes place during cleavage.  相似文献

Group dynamics related to distribution of African elephants in the semi‐arid environment of Tsavo East National Park, Kenya was studied between 2007 and 2010. I examined the seasonal distribution of lone bulls, bull groups, family units and mixed groups and group size. Lone bulls were widely distributed in the dry season and localized in the wet season, whereas bull groups were localized in both seasons. On average bull group size did not differ with seasons or areas, but larger groups were observed in preferred areas in the dry season. Family units were widely distributed in the dry season and localized in the wet season, whereas mixed groups were localized in both seasons. Although family units and mixed groups tended to be large in all areas in the wet season, large groups were also observed in the dry season. Large family units were widely distributed, whereas large mixed groups were localized. The relationship between group dynamics and distribution was attributed to the combination of social, ecological and poaching factors. This study provided insight into distribution patterns that can be applied to the security of the Tsavo elephant population.  相似文献

Fractionation of B. subtilis cells after heat shock, from 37 degrees C to 54 degrees C, shows an increase in synthesis of proteins localized in cell membranes and a decrease in synthesis of proteins localized in cytosol. There is no such effect of heat shock at temperature of 45 degrees C. Autoradiograms of electrophoretically separated proteins, labelled during heat shock at 54 degrees C, reveal 26 heat-shock proteins (hsps) in membrane vesicles and 11 hsps in cytosol, five of which are common to both fractions. Heat shock at 45 degrees C induces 18 hsps localized in membrane vesicles and 13 hsps localized in cytosol, six of which are common to both fractions. Results are interpreted as showing a relevant role of membrane proteins in cell response to shock at high temperature, pointing to two steps of defense against heat stress.  相似文献

We present a novel composite nanostructure consisting of bowtie nanoantennas and asymmetric nanoapertures, which provides a new way of indirectly tuning the resonant wavelengths and manipulating the localized fields. The proposed composite nanostructure cannot only produce a symmetric localized field distribution but also create two asymmetric localized field distributions in optical frequency. The resonant peaks of the composite nanostructure can easily be bidirectionally tuned by indirectly adjusting the geometrical parameters of the asymmetric nanoapertures. The mechanisms for manipulating and tuning the localized fields are also discussed.  相似文献

mRNA localization is a powerful mechanism for targeting factors to different regions of the cell and is used in Drosophila to pattern the early embryo. During oogenesis of the wasp Nasonia, mRNA localization is used extensively to replace the function of the Drosophila bicoid gene for the initiation of patterning along the antero-posterior axis. Nasonia localizes both caudal and nanos to the posterior pole, whereas giant mRNA is localized to the anterior pole of the oocyte; orthodenticle1 (otd1) is localized to both the anterior and posterior poles. The abundance of differentially localized mRNAs during Nasonia oogenesis provided a unique opportunity to study the different mechanisms involved in mRNA localization. Through pharmacological disruption of the microtubule network, we found that both anterior otd1 and giant, as well as posterior caudal mRNA localization was microtubule-dependent. Conversely, posterior otd1 and nanos mRNA localized correctly to the posterior upon microtubule disruption. However, actin is important in anchoring these two posteriorly localized mRNAs to the oosome, the structure containing the pole plasm. Moreover, we find that knocking down the functions of the genes tudor and Bicaudal-D mimics disruption of microtubules, suggesting that tudor's function in Nasonia is different from flies, where it is involved in formation of the pole plasm.  相似文献

We contend that a range of phenomena characterizing temperate deposit-feeding communities in low-energy environments is strongly organized by two principal opposing forces: (1) spatially localized inputs of detritus or new recruits, leading to a mosaic of initial patches, with subsequent impacts on spatio-temporal variation of species with limited mobility; and (2) the impact of mobile consumers, which move to spatially localized resources and thereby exert major controls over comparatively larger spatial scales. Surface deposit feeders react differently from deep feeders, in terms of spatio-temporal population change. The two opposing community control forces, combined with responses of deposit feeder functional groups, have potentially different effects on community structure. Mobile consumers, often acting as keystone species, may move to localized patches created by the bottom-up force of food input or by localized recruitment of prey. Their mobility, combined with predicted optimal foraging behavior, would usually produce a spatially homogenizing force, leading to reduced spatial variation in community composition. By contrast, spatially localized inputs of resources, if dominant, would always lead to strong spatial heterogeneity. Dominance of complex space–time variation in detrital enrichment would lead to strong spatio-temporal complexity in macrofauna if the response of recruiting larvae and rapidly growing small invertebrate populations was immediate and keyed to localized food input. The ability of mobile consumers to locate detritus, combined with the spatial distribution and overall input rate of detritus, should determine the balance of surface and deep-feeding deposit feeders. The opposing force approach can be applied to communities generally.  相似文献

RNA localization is an important event that is essential for the polarization and differentiation of a cell. Although several methods are currently used to detect localized RNAs, a simplified detection system has not yet been developed for Schizosaccharomyces pombe. In the present study, we describe a new vector system for the visualization of localized RNAs in S. pombe using a U1A-tag-GFP system. A pREP1-U1A-tag vector plasmid to express U1A-tagged RNA and a pREP2-U1AGFP plasmid to produce a U1A-GFP fusion protein were constructed for this system. Since the U1A-GFP protein binds U1A-tagged RNA, fluorescence is observed at the location of U1A-tagged RNA in cells expressing both of these. The nucleolar localization of U3 snoRNA was successfully detected using this system, and a novel RNA localized at the DNA region of the nucleus was found by screening localized RNAs. This system will accelerate the study of localized RNAs in S. pombe.  相似文献

Nerve growth factor (NGF) and related neurotrophins are target-derived survival factors for sensory neurons. In addition, these peptides modulate neuronal differentiation, axon guidance, and synaptic plasticity. We tested axonal behavior of embryonic trigeminal neurons towards localized sources of NGF in collagen gel assays. Trigeminal axons preferentially grow towards lower doses of localized NGF and grow away from higher concentrations at earlier stages of development, but do not show this response later. Dorsal root ganglion axons also show similar responses to NGF, but NGF-dependent superior cervical ganglion axons do not. Such axonal responses to localized NGF sources were also observed in Bax-/- mice, suggesting that the axonal effects are largely independent of cell survival. Immunocytochemical studies indicated that axons, which grow towards or away from localized NGF are TrkA-positive, and TrkA-/- TG axons do not respond to any dose of NGF. We further show that axonal responses to NGF are absent in TG derived from mice that lack the p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR). Collectively, our results suggest that localized sources of NGF can direct axon outgrowth from trigeminal ganglion in a dose- and age-dependent fashion, mediated by p75NTR signaling through TrkA expressing axons.  相似文献

Traps exert an omnipotent influence over the performance of halide perovskite optoelectronic devices. A clear understanding of the origin and nature of the traps in halide perovskites is the key to controlling them and realizing optimal devices. Herein, the role of localized traps on the optical properties of lead bromide perovskite films is investigated. In the low‐temperature orthorhombic phase of CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite, band‐edge carrier dynamics exhibit a power‐law decay due to the presence of structural‐disorder‐induced localized traps, which has a depth of ≈40 meV. The continuous distribution of these localized traps gives rise to a broad sub‐band‐gap emission that becomes more prominent in thicker films with a larger trap density. The presence of this emission only from the hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites points to the vital role of organic dipoles in localized trap states formation. This study explicates the nature of these localized traps as well as their nontrivial role in carrier recombination kinetics, which is of fundamental importance in perovskites optoelectronics.  相似文献
