Purpose

Although the funeral market is propagating new ‘green’ alternatives and exploring innovative techniques like resomation, very little is known about the environmental impact of funerals. This research aimed to develop a benchmark of funerals, by quantifying the environmental impacts of the most common funeral techniques, i.e. burial and cremation, by identifying where the main impacts originate from and by comparing these impacts to impacts of other activities during a person’s life.

Methods

The environmental impacts of funerals were analysed by means of a life cycle assessment (LCA), based on Dutch company information, literature and expert judgements. The results were analysed per impact category but also on an aggregated level by means of shadow prices. Two sensitivity analyses were performed: one examined the high impact of cotton in funeral coffins; the other checked the results by means of another weighting method.

Results and discussion

The results showed no significant difference between the two funeral techniques in five impact categories. Burial has the lowest impact in more than half of the categories, but its impact is many times higher in the two most differing categories than for cremation. The total shadow price of burial is about 30 % higher than the shadow price of cremation, but the main cause for this difference is a highly debated category, namely land use. If the results would be considered without the shadow prices of land impact categories, burial would score 25 % lower than cremation. These results are representing average practise and may deviate on certain aspects for other countries, but as a starting point for further studies, this benchmark is well applicable.

Conclusions and recommendations

This study delivered an environmental benchmark of funerals and insights in the impacts of the individual processes, which can be used in further assessment of ’green’ funeral options. The benchmark results show that the environmental impact of funerals is largely determined by secondary processes and that the total impact can be quite small in comparison to other human activities. Besides these environmental insights, it is important to take into account social, cultural, climatic, local, economical and ethical arguments before changing policies or giving recommendations.

This paper reviews the remains of plants (cereals, pulses, fruit and vegetables) used as offerings in cremation burials in northern Italian Roman cemeteries between the 1st century b.c. and the 3rd century a.d. The custom of burning plant offerings on the funeral pyre was widespread in the Iron Age, but in the Roman Empire such offerings became more frequent and abundant, with fruit being prevalent and also the recurrent use of various prepared foods (bread, cakes and suchlike). In each cemetery this general scheme exhibits variations probably due to individual, social, ritual and economic differences, but this impression must be still confirmed. The absence of a systematic sampling strategy does not permit a statistical approach to offering data. The aim of this article is to encourage archaeologists and archaeobotanists to pay more attention to methodology in sampling. This would also permit careful comparison of the archaeobotanical data with archaeological, anthropological and historical information and that from written sources. The consistently recorded presence of fruit in cemeteries makes it possible to investigate some aspects of the introduction, cultivation and marketing of certain food plants in northern Italy.  相似文献

Burning of corpses is a well-known funeral procedure that has been performed for a long time in many cultures. Nowadays more and more corpses are burned in crematories and buried in urns, often for practical and financial reasons. In some scientific, criminal or civil cases even after cremation there is the need of genetic investigations for identification or paternity testing. Furthermore, burned remains are the only remains left in North Europe from 1200 BC to 500 AD. This makes genetic investigation of those materials interesting for anthropological reasons. We present on one hand a systematic investigation of 10 corpses before and after the cremation and on the other hand the analysis of seven historical remains representing the bronze age. We chose the ground bone powder and the less destroyed bone parts respectively and employed a slightly modified commercially available DNA extraction method. The presence of human nuclear and mitochondrial DNA was tested by a simple but highly sensitive Duplex-PCR. DNA quantification was done using real time PCR, and genetic typing was tried out using the AmpFISTR Identifiler Multiplex Kit, followed by an automatic analysis on an AbiPrism310.  相似文献

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis was carried out on human and animal bones from four inland Early and Middle Bronze Age sites in Northern and Southern Italy. The main aims of the investigation were to explore the contribution of plant foods to the human diet and to examine any dietary differences between and within each of the sites. At two of the sites in Northern Italy, human and animal bones were significantly enriched in 13C. This finding was attributed to the consumption of domestic millets (Panicum miliaceum and/or Setaria italica), which are C4 pathway plants. Conversely, individuals from the two Bronze Age sites in Southern Italy were significantly depleted in 13C compared to those from the north. Here, millet was absent from the diet, and protein from C3 plants made a much greater dietary contribution than animal protein. This finding highlights the importance of cereal cultivation, most likely of wheat and barley, in the south of Italy during the Bronze Age. Overall, our results support the idea that the widespread cultivation of millet first occurred in Northern Italy, following its introduction from across the Alps in Central Europe. Finally, we found no significant differences in the stable isotope values between individuals at each site, when grouped by their sex or presence of grave goods. This leads to the conclusion that any status difference that may have existed is not reflected in the long‐term dietary record, or at least not as measurable by stable isotope analysis. Archaeobotanical studies of funerary offerings allow important insights into beliefs in the afterlife and rituals in the past. Although the number of such investigations has increased in recent years, there are still only a very few systematic investigations of Gallo-Roman cremation graves, especially in northern France. The archaeobotanical study presented here concerns the cemetery (necropolis) of Faulquemont, located in the Département of Moselle. 70 cremation graves, dated from the 1st up to the beginning of the 3rd century A.D. have been sampled for the study of the botanical remains. The graveyard belongs to a rural site. The structures, mainly pits, contained secondary deposits of cremations, characterised by ashy fillings, broken archaeological burned material, bones and carbonised plant remains. 18 plant species have been identified including cereals, pulses, tubers and fruits plus bread/pastry. The most important ones were Triticum (hulled wheat), Hordeum (hulled barley), Lens (lentil) and Pisum (pea). There were also more “exotic” finds like Olea (olive), Phoenix (date) and Lupinus (lupin). The preservation of the cereals suggests possible cooking before cremation, or a long exposure to the fire. Some other plants like hazelnut and olive were maybe consumed as a component of funerary meals. In addition, there were also complete fruits burned as funerary offerings. Only the wealthy deceased received luxurious products such as date. Altogether, the spectrum of Faulquemont fits very well with the known picture of plant offerings during Gallo-Roman times. The research presented in this paper is based on geographical zone chosen as context for a general discussion centred on a critical inventory of graves, burial places and funeral traditions within Neolithic communities between about 6000 and 2200 B.C. It proposes to define the characteristics and the evolution of funeral behaviours during the Neolithic times in Southern France, between about 6000 and 2200 B.C. Southern France has been considered in an extended definition, from Atlantic Ocean to the Alps, a territory constituted of 26 departments. In view of the extent of the territorial limits, the study was directly all-encompassing. It bears on 150 years of archaeological discoveries unevenly distributed on the Neolithic times. The study takes into consideration all the documentation published. The funeral traditions have been considered in the wide sense, that is tomb architecture, laying out and treatment of cadavers, study of archaeological artefacts. The study leads on to an interpretative outline of the funeral traditions whose development was closely linked to the social evolution of southern Neolithic communities. It researchs a social evolution beyond funeral behaviours, a power more and more destined to an elite who prefigures the protohistory.  相似文献

This article addresses the impacts of differential preservation in an alkaline shell midden overlying an acid soil which does not allow bone to survive. This midden accumulated over an extended period and displays unusual traits attributable to practices of a ritual nature (Le Bihan and Méniel, 2002). Excavation extended to approximately 1000 m2. Bone was collected on a quarter metre grid by individual context. Some 35,000 animal and bird bones were recovered; fish bones, which were very numerous, are presently still under study. Consideration of the entire bone assemblage indicates that the principal deposition occurred along the SW/NE axis of the midden, with a lesser dump on the NW (zone XLI). The sector with the greatest concentration of bones covered some 50 m2; there, fragile remains, notably those of birds and fish, were at their most frequent. The distribution of ovicaprid bones is more uniform. Cattle and pigs are more frequent on the edges of the midden. Overall, there was a noticeable gradient in the quality of bone preservation between the core and the periphery of the deposit. The principal dump of bones displays two remarkable characteristics: a great quantity of shoulder blades and a preponderance of right-side remains over their left-side equivalents. The chronology of the accumulation of the midden shows four major phases: Bronze Age, Hallstatt Iron Age, La Tène Iron Age and Gallo-Roman. Plotting the bones by phase shows that the prime area of the deposit moves from NE to SW over time. It is thus possible to track the evolving rules of selection of species, individuals or animal parts from their distributions on the ground. This is particularly true for domestic pig, which increases in importance over time, and is encountered especially towards the south of the midden. Some bones show clear signs of alteration attributable to their exposure to the weather, making it plain that the midden was not covered with soil during its accumulation. The impact of such degradation on the bones can be very visible. The fact that some bones display signs of weather-related damage on more than one facet indicates that there was considerable secondary manipulation of this material. This study demonstrates the value of coupling a standardized but rapid method of data collection (by quarter metre squares) with detailed cartographic analysis of the material recovered. Both the taphonomic effects on a deposit built up over a very long time scale and continuity in certain practices (preferential selection of right shoulder blades) are clear from an initial consideration of the data.  相似文献

This study was carried out on 300 adult cuneiform bones (100 each of medial, intermediate and lateral cuneiform bones) for variations in their articular facets. The bones under study are from the Department of Anatomy, University of Jos, Nigeria. In each group, 75 were male and 25 female bones. The difference in the incidence of various patterns of articular facets in the different cuneiform bones between males and females as well as between right and left sides was found to be statistically significant.  相似文献

Corpses of 242 Lithuanians died at the age of 14-95 years from Kaunas and its environs have been studied somatometrically . The forearm bones from the corpses have been extracted, macerated and studied osteoscopically by means of a stereomicroscope, osteometrically and electroroentgenographically . The data obtained are treated by means of a computer. The signs of lateral asymmetry in the forearm bones, that is more often right-sided, are described. Sex differences in the forearm bones are also described. These differences could be used as a base for the method of sex determination by means of discriminant functions. Age differences of the bones studied are presented.  相似文献

Detection of anthrax spores in endemic regions of northern Canada   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
AIMS: To determine the level of anthrax spore contamination in endemic regions of northern Canada between outbreaks. METHODS AND RESULTS: Bacterial endospores were extracted from specimens via flotation and cultured on selective PLET medium. Of 588 environmental specimens collected, 11 (1.9%) contained viable anthrax spores. CONCLUSION: High environmental concentrations of anthrax spores in northern Canada appear limited to scavenger faeces and anthrax carcass sites. Burial and cremation appear equally effective at removing anthrax spores from the immediate environment, though cremation may be improved by re-burning cremation sites containing unburned animal hair. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study describes an effective anthrax spore detection system. It provides the first bacteriological evidence that mammalian scavengers can disseminate anthrax spores in northern Canada, and its results may be compared with future environmental studies of untreated anthrax carcass sites to help improve government response plans.  相似文献

Numerous burial rites have been developed in different time periods of human cultural evolution. One of the most interesting burial practices was the ritual cremation of human bodies. Due to the respective cultural and religious background, brand graves are known where human remains had been buried together with burnt bones of animal origin. To date, burnt bone samples have been refractory to PCR-mediated amplification. D/L values of aspartic acid far greater than 80 x 10(-3) were measured in the samples thus indicating the presence of severely nicked and fragmented nucleic acids. In order to differentiate between burial gift of animal origin and burnt human specimens we established a highly sensitive protocol that addresses all the shortcomings connected to degraded ancient DNA. With the novel procedure it was possible to classify 4 specimens ranging from 2,000-5,000 BP on the basis of mitochondrial DNA sequences.  相似文献

Kinematic data from rigid segment foot models inevitably includes errors because the bones within each segment move relative to each other. This study sought to define error in foot kinematic data due to violation of the rigid segment assumption. The research compared kinematic data from 17 different mid and forefoot rigid segment models to kinematic data of the individual bones comprising these segments. Kinematic data from a previous dynamic cadaver model study was used to derive individual bone as well as foot segment kinematics.Mean and maximum errors due to violation of the rigid body assumption varied greatly between models. The model with least error was the combination of navicular and cuboid (mean errors <=1.3°, average maximum error <=2.4°). Greatest error was seen for the model combining all the ten bones (mean errors <=4.4°, average maximum errors <=6.9°). Based on the errors reported a three segment mid and forefoot model is proposed: (1) Navicular and cuboid, (2) cuneiforms and metatarsals 1, 2 and 3, and (3) metatarsals 4 and 5. However the utility of this model will depend on the precise purpose of the in vivo foot kinematics research study being undertaken.  相似文献

Over 60 recent analyses of animal bones, plant remains, and building timbers from Assiros in northern Greece form an unique series from the 14th to the 10th century BC. With the exception of Thera, the number of 14C determinations from other Late Bronze Age sites in Greece has been small and their contribution to chronologies minimal. The absolute dates determined for Assiros through Bayesian modelling are both consistent and unexpected, since they are systematically earlier than the conventional chronologies of southern Greece by between 70 and 100 years. They have not been skewed by reference to assumed historical dates used as priors. They support high rather than low Iron Age chronologies from Spain to Israel where the merits of each are fiercely debated but remain unresolved.  相似文献

Up to now there has been little archaeobotanical research on Gallo-Roman graveyards in Belgium. This paper presents the preliminary results of the investigation of the cremation graves of the graveyards at Tienen and Tongeren, dated from the first up to the beginning of the fourth century a.d., and respectively located in the provinces of Vlaams-Brabant and Limburg. The structures studied mainly consisted of pits containing secondary deposits of pyre debris, but a few busta (where cremation took place in situ in or above a pit) could be analysed as well. The results presented here will focus on the most conspicuous finds. The only bustum grave excavated in Tongeren proved to be extremely rich in remains of Lens culinaris (lentil), Vicia faba var. minor (Celtic bean) with some Vicia ervilia (bitter or lentil vetch), concentrated in the presumed area of the head of the deceased. Some of the graves in Tienen, on the other hand, contained some less frequently found taxa, as for example Vitis vinifera (grape), Olea europaea (olive), Pyrus communis (pear), Prunus insititia and/or domestica (plums, in the broad sense) and Cornus sanguinea (dogwood). Most graves however, showed a typical assemblage consisting of mainly pulses and cereals, commonly found in cremation graves. In that respect a certain similarity between both graveyards could be noticed, which is also reflected in the anthropological study. 117 adult human skulls were classified for three morphological forms, i.e. dolichocephalic, mesocephalic and brachycephalic, and were examined for the presence of sutural bones in each form. Sutural bones occur in each forms of the skulls with no statistically significant differences. This finding is interpreted as indicating that sutural bones are not formed secondary to stress, otherwise the incidence of the sutural bones would have been differed in different morphological forms of skulls.  相似文献

Hominids from the site of Border Cave purportedly provide direct evidence for the early emergence of anatomically modern humans (AMH) in Southern Africa. ESR dating of Border Cave faunal enamel has confirmed the antiquity of the sediments, although questions persist regarding the provenience of the hominid specimens. Here we establish that, at Border Cave as elsewhere, bone mineral crystallinity, measured as the infrared (IR) splitting factor (SF), distinguishes between contemporary and recent bones on the one hand, from Middle Stone Age (MSA) bones on the other. Two hominid postcranial bones recovered in 1987 from a slumped profile, having essentially no provenience, are shown to have crystallinity indices consistent with the MSA fauna, while two of the purportedly ancient AMH specimens (BC3 and BC5) have values consistent with recent fauna. We conclude that BC3 and BC5 may be considerably younger than the sediments from which they were recovered.  相似文献

The dermal bones of Birgeria and Scanilepis contain numerous odontodes of consecutive generations, each consisting of dentine and a single ganoin layer; superimposition of series of ganoin layers, generally encountered in the scales of the palaeonisciforms. does not occur in any of these bones. In Birgeria , some odontodes near to the dentition resemble jaw-teeth proper in possessing an apical portion of acrodin; furthermore, nothing indicates the existence here of nerve-sac groups like those of sturgeons. The histology of the dermal skeleton in Scanilepis does not support the assumption that this form is more closely related to Polypterus than other palaeonisciforms. Remarks are given on the structure of acrodin and ganoin as revealed by SEM study.

Researchers have debated whether the presence and frequency of wormian bones (sutural bones, supernumerary bones, and ossicles) are attributable to genetic factors, environmental factors, or both. This research examines the effects of many different kinds of cranial deformation on the incidence of wormian bones. A sample of 127 deformed and undeformed crania from New World archaeological sites was examined. An undeformed cranial sample (n=35) was compared to the following cranially deformed groups: 1) occipital, 2) lambdoid, 3) annular, 4) fronto-vertico-occipital, 5) parallelo-fronto-occipital, and 6) sagittal synostosis. Three levels of degree of cultural cranial deformation were qualitatively determined. Type and number of wormian bones along each major suture were recorded for each cranium. Group means were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA statistical tests to test the null hypothesis that cranial deformation does not have an effect on wormian bone incidence. Results indicate that all forms of cranial deformation affect the frequency of some types of wormian bones. In particular, all cranially deformed groups exhibited significantly greater frequencies of lambdoid ossicles. Apical, parieto-mastoid, and occipito-mastoid wormian bones also appeared with greater frequency in some groups of culturally deformed crania. Further, varying degrees of cultural deformation all had more lambdoid wormian bones than the undeformed group. These results suggest that wormian bone development in posteriorly placed sutures may be affected more by environmental forces than are their anteriorly placed counterparts.  相似文献
