Seasonal changes in the net photosynthesis and dark respiration in second-year needles of Siberian fir were investigated. The functional state of needles was shown to determine the structural features of mesophyll cells. Current-year shoot growth is one of the major factors affecting the structure and functional activity of second-year needles during the growing period. The greatest changes occur in the number of mitochondria in mesophyll cells and the respiration rate of second-year needles. The rate of photosynthesis in second-year needles was shown to depend on the number of thylakoids in mesophyll chloroplasts.  相似文献

Seasonal dimorphism (summer/winter) has been so far studied only in a few plants and has been focused on summer drought stress. However, Thymus sibthorpii in the study area appears to be affected by winter chilling stress and not by summer drought stress. Thus, the winter leaves were thicker and more compact compared to the summer leaves and they had more stomata and peltate hairs, more sclerenchymatous fibers, vacuoles with phenolics, and chloroplasts than the summer leaves. In addition, their chloroplasts possessed large grana and starch grains. In the summer leaves, cell vacuoles in mesophyll did not contain phenolics, and chloroplasts were devoid of starch grains and had large plastoglobuli. Physiological measurements revealed higher net photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content in the winter leaves than in the summer leaves. Proline and soluble sugar content along with antioxidative enzyme (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase) activities were increased in the winter leaves.  相似文献

Variation in Mesophyll Cell Number and Size in Wheat Leaves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The numbers of mesophyll cells in wheat leaves were determinedin a variety of wheat species differing in ploidy level andin leaves from different positions on the wheat plant. Leafsize and mesophyll cell number are linearly related in bothcases but differences were observed in mesophyll cell numberper unit leaf area with changing leaf size. Where changes incell size are caused either by nuclear ploidy or leaf position, differences in mesophyll cell number per unit leaf are negativelycorrelated with mesophyll cell plan area. The decrease in cellsize with increasing leaf position also results in a greaternumber of chloroplasts per unit leaf area. These results arediscussed in relation to anatomical variation of the wheat leaf. Mesophyll cell, cell numbers, leaf size, Triticum  相似文献

This study examines interrelationships between eight leaf attributes (specific leaf mass, area, dry mass, lamina thickness, mesophyll cell number per cm2, mesophyll cell volume, chloroplast volume, and number of chloroplasts per mesophyll cell) in field-grown plants of 94 species from the Eastern Pamir Mountains, at elevations between 3800 and 4750 m. Unlike most other mountain areas, the Eastern Pamirs, Karakorum system, Tadjikistan provide localities where low temperatures and radiation combine with moisture stress at high altitudes. For all the attributes measured, significant differences were found between plants with different mesophyll types. Leaves with dorsiventral palisade structure (dorsal palisade, ventral spongy mesophyll cells) had thicker leaves with larger but fewer mesophyll cells, containing more and larger chloroplasts. These differences in mesophyll type are reflected in differences in the total surface of mesophyll cells per unit leaf area ( A mes/ A ) or volume ( A mes/ V ). Plants with isopalisade leaf structure (palisade cells under both dorsal and ventral surfaces) are more commonly xerophytes and their increased values of A mes/ A and A mes/ V decrease CO2 mesophyll resistance, which is an important adaptation to drought. Path analysis shows the critical importance of mesophyll cell volume in leading to the covariance between the different leaf attributes and hence to specific leaf mass (SLM), even though mesophyll cell volume is not itself strongly correlated with SLM. This is because mesophyll cell volume increases SLM through its effects on leaf thickness and chloroplast number per cell, but decreases SLM through its negative effect on mesophyll cell density.  相似文献

Dimorphic chloroplasts of Zea mays L. cv. GH5004 from bundle sheath and mesophyll cells contained similar amounts of DNA, while bundle sheath chloroplasts contained twice the number of nucleoids compared to mesophyll chloroplasts. On average bundle sheath nucleoids were half the size of mesophyll nucleoids and contained half as much DNA. Electron microscope autoradiography of the chloroplasts showed that the nucleoid DNA is associated with the thylakoids and in the case of mesophyll chloroplasts preferentially with the grana. These observations suggest that the differences in nucleoid distribution may be due to differences in membrane morphology, with the small nucleoids of agranal bundle sheath chloroplasts being widely dispersed.  相似文献

Mediterranean perennial species are described as being sclerophyllous,or summer deciduous, or seasonally dimorphic. Field observationin the coastal maquis of Castelvolturno Nature Reserve, southernItaly, showed thatCistus incanus L. subsp. incanus is a seasonallydimorphic species as it develops brachyblasts with small leavesin summer, and dolichoblasts with large leaves in winter. Fieldbiometric data confirmed that winter shoots were 14-times longerthan those developed in summer and had many more leaves. Thearea of single winter leaves was five-times that of summer leaves.Anatomical leaf structure also changed with the season: winterleaves were flat while summer leaves had a crimped lamina whichwas partially rolled to form crypts in the lower surface. Leaveswere covered by considerably more trichomes in summer than inwinter. Stomata were uniformly distributed along the lower epidermisof winter leaves but were only present in the crypts of summerleaves. In summer leaves, a palisade layer was often found onboth sides of the lamina, the mesophyll cells were generallysmaller and the intercellular spaces were reduced. Winter leaveshad a dorsiventral structure and larger intercellular spaces.Seasonal dimorphism is generally reported to be an adaptationto summer drought. However, the morphology and anatomy of C.incanus L. subsp.incanus showed that the subspecies has notonly developed a strategy to survive summer drought, but hasevolved two different habits, one more xerophytic than the other,to optimize adaptation to the seasonal climatic changes occurringin Mediterranean environments. Craniofacial remains (the most abundant identifiable remains in the fossil record) potentially offer important information about body size dimorphism in extinct species. This study evaluates the scaling relationships between body mass dimorphism and different measures of craniofacial dimorphism, evaluating taxonomic differences in the magnitude and scaling of craniofacial dimorphism across higher taxonomic groups. Data on 40 dimensions from 129 primate species and subspecies demonstrate that few dimensions change proportionally with body mass dimorphism. Primates show general patterns of greater facial vs. neurocranial and orbital dimorphism, and greater dimorphism in lengths as opposed to breadths. Within any species, though, different craniofacial dimensions can yield very different reconstructions of size dimorphism. There are significant taxonomic differences in the relationships between size and craniofacial dimorphism among primate groups that can have a significant impact on reconstructions of body mass dimorphism. Hominoids tend to show lower degrees of facial dimorphism proportional to size dimorphism than other primates. This in turn implies that strong craniofacial dimorphism in Australopithecus africanus could imply very strong body size dimorphism, conflicting with the relatively modest size dimorphism inferred from postcrania. Different methods of estimating the magnitude of size dimorphism from craniofacial measurements yield similar results, and yield comparatively low percent prediction errors for a number of dimensions. However, confidence intervals for most estimates are so large as to render most estimates highly tentative.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism patterns provide an opportunity to increase our understanding of trait evolution. Because selective forces may vary throughout the reproductive period, measuring dimorphism seasonally may be an interesting approach. An increased male head size may be important in intersexual and intrasexual interactions. In Tupinambis lizards, a big head is attributed in part to a large adductor muscle mass. Competition for mating can differ in species with different sex ratio and different degrees of sexual size dimorphism. We examined sexual differences in mass of the pterygoideus muscle, its temporal variation throughout the reproductive period and the relationship between muscle and reproductive condition in Tupinambis merianae and T. rufescens. We characterized sexual size dimorphism and sex ratio in both species. Mature males had larger jaw muscles than mature females in both species, mainly during the reproductive season. The dimorphism in jaw muscle was due to an increase in muscle mass in sexually active males. Seasonal increases in muscle mass and variation between immature and mature individuals suggest that the jaw muscle might be a secondary sexual character. We propose that the pterygoideus muscle may act as a signal of reproductive condition of males because it is associated with testis size and sperm presence. The patterns of sexual dimorphism in jaw muscle in both species were similar; however, the comparison shows how sexual characters remain dimorphic in different competition contexts and in species with different degrees of body size dimorphism. Our results suggest that jaw muscle as sexual character could be influenced by inter- and intrasexual selective pressures.  相似文献

Fruit effects on photosynthesis in Prunus persica   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Seasonal measurements of net CO2 assimilation, leaf conductance and mesophyll conductance were made in the field on mature, fruiting and defruited Prunus persica L. Batsch trees. During early stages of fruit growth there were no significant differences in leaf gas exchange characteristics between fruiting and defruited trees. During the early part of the last stage of fruit growth, CO2 assimilation rates were 11–15% higher in fruiting trees than defruited trees. These increased assimilation rates corresponded with approximately 30% increases in leaf conductance and only minor changes in mesophyll conductances or leaf CO2 assimilation capacity as indicated by leaf nitrogen content. It is concluded that under the field conditions of this study the fruit effect on photosynthesis is primarily related to stomatal behavior.  相似文献

The evolution of sexual dimorphism is an important topic of evolutionary biology, but few studies have investigated the determinants of sexual dimorphism over broad phylogenetic scales. The number of vertebrae is a discrete character influencing multiple traits of individuals, and is particularly suitable to analyze processes determining morphological variation. We evaluated the support of multiple hypotheses concerning evolutionary processes that may cause sexual dimorphism in the number of caudal vertebrae in Urodela (tailed amphibians). We obtained counts of caudal vertebrae from >2,000 individuals representing 27 species of salamanders and newts from Europe and the Near East, and integrated these data with a molecular phylogeny and multiple information on species natural history. Per each species, we estimated sexual dimorphism in caudal vertebrae number. We then used phylogenetic least squares to relate this sexual dimorphism to natural history features (courtship complexity, body size dimorphism, sexual ornamentation, aquatic phenology) representing alternative hypotheses on processes that may explain sexual dimorphism. In 18 % of species, males had significantly more caudal vertebrae than females, while in no species did females have significantly more caudal vertebrae. Dimorphism was highest in species where males have more complex courtship behaviours, while the support of other candidate mechanisms was weak. In many species, males use the tail during courtship displays, and sexual selection probably favours tails with more vertebrae. Dimorphism for the number of tail vertebrae was unrelated to other forms of dimorphism, such as sexual ornamentation or body size differences. Multiple sexually dimorphic features may evolve independently because of the interplay between sexual selection, fecundity and natural selection.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Domatia are small organs usually found in the axils of major veins on the underside of leaves and, although they have received wide attention from ecologists, few detailed reports exist on their anatomy or development. This study is focused on the domatia of Cinnamomum camphora (Lauraceae) and is the first comparative study on the anatomy and development of the different shapes of domatia within a single plant. METHODS: Four types of domatia in C. camphora leaves were observed on paraffin sections under a microscope. KEY RESULTS: The domatia consisted of six histological parts: the upper epidermis, the upper mesophyll tissue, spongy tissue, the lower mesophyll tissue, the tissue filling the rim opening, and the lower epidermis. They differed from the non-domatial lamina mainly in the cell structure of the upper and lower mesophyll tissue and the rim tissue. Differences in domatium shapes were mainly associated with differences in the structure of the upper mesophyll and in the number and size of the rim tissue cells. Differences in the development of domatium types were observed in terms of initiation timing, differentiation of the upper mesophyll cells and degree of rim tissue development. CONCLUSIONS: In domatia, active anticlinal division in the lower mesophyll cells, as compared with the upper mesophyll cells, was coordinated with dynamic growth of rim tissue cells and resulted in cavity formation. The anatomical or developmental differences among the four types of domatia were related to the positions of the domatia within a leaf. In terms of the ecological implications, the major anatomical difference between the domatia used by herbivorous and carnivorous mites was in the development of the rim tissue.  相似文献

Contrary to an increasing number of papers that document sexual dimorphism in size (and/or shape) in adults, studies dealing with sex differences in newborn and juvenile snakes are surprisingly scarce. Data about ontogenetic shifts in sexual dimorphism are generally lacking and hence, it is unclear whether sex differences are set at birth or arise post‐natally. In this study, we analyzed patterns of sexual dimorphism in body size, head dimensions and tail length (TL) among newborn, subadult and adult meadow vipers (Vipera ursinii) from the Bjelasica Mt. in Montenegro. Patterns of sexual size dimorphisms differed among traits. There was no significant difference in head dimension of males and females, but adult snakes were sexually dimorphic in body size. Sexual differences in TL were evident since birth but changed in degree throughout ontogeny. Neonate meadow vipers presented highly significant inter‐litter variation in the sexual dimorphism of all traits we have measured. Such family effects may have an important influence on extent of inter‐sexual differences in snakes and should be included in analyses of sexual dimorphism.  相似文献

Despite a number of studies stating that sexual dimorphism is population specific, sexual differences in Southeast Asian populations have received little attention. Previous studies in this region have focused on samples from Thailand or East Asian populations from China and Japan, examining sexual dimorphism predominantly of the postcranial bones, teeth and mandible with comparatively few cranial studies. These earlier studies have used traditional methods to metrically assess differences between the sexes. The aim of this study is to use geometric morphometric methods for the first time to quantify sexual dimorphism of Southeast Asian crania and extend knowledge of cranial sexual dimorphism beyond China, Japan and Thailand. A total of 35 unilateral and midline landmark coordinates were collected from 144 mainland and island Southeast Asian crania (89 male, 55 female). Using the shape analysis software Morphologika, principal components analysis and thin plate splines allowed for the statistical and visual exploration of shape differences. Differences included relative facial breadth, particularly across the zygomatic and postorbital regions and cranial vault breadth. Significant size dimorphism was also apparent. Overall expected accuracies were highest in the discriminant analysis using both shape and centroid size (86.8%).  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism is widespread in nature and can be influenced by sex-specific natural selection resulting from ecological differences between the sexes. Here we show that contrasting life-history pressures and temporal shifts in ecology can exert a strong influence on the evolution of sexual dimorphism. The bony spines exhibited by stickleback are a defense against open-water avian predators but may be detrimental against benthic macroinvertebrate predators. Female stickleback from a coastal lake in western Canada occupy a more open-water ecological niche and exhibit greater dorsal and pelvic spine number than males, but the magnitude of these differences varies among life-history stages, seasons, and years. Ecological data on diet and parasite load and 62 seasonal estimates of selection over a 15-year period show that selection favors increased spine number in females and decreased spine number in males, but only when pronounced ecological differences between the sexes results in differential exposure to the two, divergent predation regimes. Thus occasional sex-reversals in ecological niche reversed the mode of selection. These processes caused a predictable response in the subsequent generation, indicating that divergent predation caused evolutionary change in dimorphism. However, temporal oscillations in sex-specific selection resulted in no net change in sexual dimorphism over the 15-year study period, indicating that fluctuations in directional selection can be responsible for long-term stasis. Replicated shifts in selective regime can demonstrate the primacy of ecological processes in driving evolution and our results illustrate how such shifts are detectable using long-term monitoring of natural populations.

Pathways to complex gallotannins have been elucidated by enzyme studies, indicating that beta-glucogallin is required as principal acyl donor. Evidence for the in vitro oxidation of pentagalloylglucose, the pivotal metabolite in this sequence, to ellagitannins, is presented. Immunohistochemical studies with antibodies raised against pentagalloylglucose and the galloyltransferase catalyzing the formation of this ester revealed that leaf mesophyll cell walls were a typical site of origin and deposition of hydrolyzable tannins. Seasonal changes of these compounds were studied with extracts from cell walls and intracellular space of oak leaves.  相似文献

We analyzed 4 meristic and 32 morphometric cranial traits of 612 adult specimens of spotted dolphins ( Stenella attenuata ) from the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean for sexual dimorphism. Eleven 5" latitude/longitude blocks with five or more of each sex were assessed with a two-way ANOVA for sex and geographic differences. Interaction between these two factors was found for six measurements, suggesting that the degree of sexual dimorphism varies geographically for a few characters (although in no discernible geographic pattern). Sexual dimorphism was demonstrated for 23 of the 36 characters, with differences ranging from 0.00 to 5.88 percent. Females characteristically had a longer rostrum, while males generally had larger skulls overall. In terms of number of characters, the extent of sexual dimorphism demonstrated for skulls of spotted dolphins goes considerably beyond that shown for any other small delphine. A discriminant function involving a combination of 10 characters enabled us to identify correctly the sex of more than 75 percent of the specimens. A procedure for correcting specimen measurements is outlined that would enable an investigator to combine male and female specimens in geographic variation studies. A term (zwitter) is proposed for use when referring to specimens where measurements have been corrected to take into account differences between the sexes.  相似文献

Male dimorphism has been reported across different taxa and is usually expressed as the coexistence of a larger morph with exaggerated male traits and a smaller one with reduced traits. The evolution and maintenance of male dimorphism are still poorly understood for several of the species in which it has been observed. Here, we analyse male dimorphism in several species of reptile parasitic nematodes of the genus Spauligodon, in which a major male morph (exaggerated morph), which presents the traditional male morphological traits reported for this taxon, coexists with a minor morph with reduced morphological traits (i.e. reduced genital papillae) resembling more closely the males of the sister genus Skrjabinodon than Spauligodon major males. Because of the level of uncertainty in the results of ancestral state reconstruction, it is unclear if the existence of male dimorphism in this group represents independent instances of convergent evolution or an ancestral trait lost multiple times. Also, although the number of major males per host was positively correlated with the number of females, the same did not hold true for minor males, whose presence was not associated with any other ecological factor. Nevertheless, the existence of male dimorphism in Spauligodon nematodes is tentatively interpreted as resulting from alternative reproductive tactics, with differences in presence and number of individuals as indicators of differences in fitness, with the lower numbers of minor males per host likely maintained by negative frequency‐dependent selection.  相似文献

Quantitative characteristics of mesophyll structure were compared in leaves of eleven alpine plant species grown under natural conditions in the Eastern Pamirs at various altitudes, from 3800 to 4750 m. Basic types of changes in mesophyll structure, associated with plant adaptation to mountain conditions, were characterized. These changes manifested themselves in different numbers of cell layers and cell sizes in the palisade tissue and, as a consequence, in changed leaf thickness and cell number per unit of leaf area. Three plant groups were identified by the changes in the leaf structural characteristics depending on the type of mesophyll structure, ecological group of plant species, and altitude of plant habitat. The first group comprised alpine xerophytes with an isopalisade structure, in which the volume of palisade cells decreased and their number per unit of leaf area increased with the altitude of plant habitat. The number of mesophyll layers and leaf thickness decreased or did not change with altitude. The second group comprised subalpine plant species with a dorsoventral structure of mesophyll; these species occur below the line of continuous night frost. In these plant species, the number of mesophyll layers, leaf thickness, and cell number per unit of leaf area increased with altitude. The third group comprised mesophyte plants with a dorsoventral and homogenous mesophyll structure, which are encountered in a wide range of habitats, including the nival belt (from 4700 to 5000 m). In this group, cell volume increased and cell number per unit of leaf area decreased with altitude. We present a general scheme of leaf structural changes, which explains the changes in the quantitative characteristics of mesophyll as a function of altitude and highland environmental conditions.  相似文献

Comparative analyses suggest that a variety of factors influence the evolution of sexual dimorphism in birds. We analyzed the relative importance of social mating system and sperm competition to sexual differences in plumage and body size (mass and tail and wing length) of more than 1,000 species of birds from throughout the world. In these analyses we controlled for phylogeny and a variety of ecological and life-history variables. We used testis size (corrected for total body mass) as an index of sperm competition in each species, because testis size is correlated with levels of extrapair paternity and is available for a large number of species. In contrast to recent studies, we found strong and consistent effects of social mating system on most forms of dimorphism. Social mating system strongly influenced dimorphism in plumage, body mass, and wing length and had some effect on dimorphism in tail length. Sexual dimorphism was relatively greater in species with polygynous or lekking than monogamous mating systems. This was true when we used both species and phylogenetically independent contrasts for analysis. Relative testis size was also related positively to dimorphism in tail and wing length, but in most analyses it was a poorer predictor of plumage dimorphism than social mating system. There was no association between relative testis size and mass dimorphism. Geographic region and life history were also associated with the four types of dimorphism, although their influence varied between the different types of dimorphism. Although there is much interest in the effects of sperm competition on sexual dimorphism, we suggest that traditional explanations based on social mating systems are better predictors of dimorphism in birds.  相似文献
