Investigations of the surface chemistry of marine organisms are essential to understand their chemically mediated interactions with fouling organisms. In this context, the concentration of natural products in the immediate vicinity of algal surfaces, as well as their biological activity, are of particular importance. However, due to lack of appropriate methods, the distribution of compounds within the chemical sphere around marine algae is unknown. This study demonstrates the suitability of confocal resonance Raman microspectroscopy for the determination of metabolites around algal surfaces with a micrometer resolution. The spatial distribution of carotenoids in the diffusion boundary layer of the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus and the green alga Ulva sp. was determined using the disruption-free optical method. A gradient of carotenoids was determined within 0 to 150 μm from the surface of thealgae, thereby demonstrating the release of the non-polar metabolites involved in antifouling processes. Thedifferences in the carotenoid composition of the brown and green algae were reflected in the spectra. Resonance Raman microspectroscopy also allowed visualization of the lateral distribution of fucoxanthin on the algal surface and localization of concentration maxima within a 50 × 50 μm2 area. The results from this work show clearly that established dipping techniques suitable for the extraction of the diffusion boundary layer of macroalgae only provide an average of the local strongly variable concentrations of metabolites on algal surfaces.  相似文献

Twenty-one species of seaweed from the California coast were analyzed for rhenium. For the first time, high enrichment (thousandfolds) of rhenium relative to seawater was found in brown algae, but not in green or red algae. Brown algae was suggested as a biological sink of rhenium in the sea and the analogous behavior of technetium to rhenium was found in marine algae. Preliminary incubation experiments with a common brown alga (Pelvetia fastigiata) showed that algal surface is not a major accumulating locus of rhenium.  相似文献

Macroalgae occur in the marine benthos from the upper intertidal to depths of more than 200?m, contributing up to 1?Pg?C per year to global primary productivity. Freshwater macroalgae are mainly green (Chlorophyta) with some red (Rhodophyta) and a small contribution of brown (Phaeophyceae) algae, while in the ocean all three higher taxa are important. Attempts to relate the depth distribution of three higher taxa of marine macroalgae to their photosynthetic light use through their pigmentation in relation to variations in spectral quality of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) with depth (complementary chromatic adaptation) and optical thickness (package effect) have been relatively unsuccessful. The presence (Chlorophyta, Phaeophyceae) or absence (Rhodophyta) of a xanthophyll cycle is also not well correlated with depth distribution of marine algae. The relative absence of freshwater brown algae does not seem to be related to their photosynthetic light use. Photosynthetic inorganic carbon acquisition in some red and a few green macroalgae involves entry of CO(2) by diffusion. Other red and green macroalgae, and brown macroalgae, have CO(2) concentrating mechanisms; these frequently involve acid and alkaline zones on the surface of the alga with CO(2) (produced from HCO(3) (-)) entering in the acid zones, while some macroalgae have CCMs based on active influx of HCO(3) (-). These various mechanisms of carbon acquisition have different responses to the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer, which is determined by macroalgal morphology and water velocity. Energetic predictions that macroalgae growing at or near the lower limit of PAR for growth should rely on diffusive CO(2) entry without acid and alkaline zones, and on NH(4) (+) rather than NO(3) (-) as nitrogen source, are only partially borne out by observation. The impact of global environmental change on marine macroalgae mainly relates to ocean acidification and warming with shoaling of the thermocline and decreased nutrient flux to the upper mixed layer. Predictions of the impact on macroalgae requires further experiments on interactions among increased inorganic carbon, increased temperature and decreased nitrogen and phosphorus supply, and, when possible, studies of genetic adaptation to environmental change.  相似文献

The lichens, Nephroma expallidum (Nyl.) Nyl. and N. arcticum (L.) Torss., consistently have at least two symbionts in a single thallus: a green alga in the algal layer and a blue-green alga in the internal cephalodia. The cephalodia originate from algal cells in contact with the lower surface of the lichen, in the zone of rhizine formation. The rhizines surround the epiphytic algal colony and form a second cortical layer; following dissociation of the original lower cortex, further growth of the two organisms results in the cyanophyte colony being enveloped by a compact layer of fungal tissue and positioned in the lichen medulla. The colony may eventually assume a superior or inferior position in relation to the lichen thallus, depending in part on the lichen species. Nephroma anticum may have two distinct morphological forms of blue-green algae in the same thallus and occasionally in the same cephalodium. It appears that the relationship that exists between the cephalodial algae and the lichen thallus is antagonistic and results, in some cases, in the exclusion of the green algal layer and death to the cephalodial cyanophytes.  相似文献

Circadian clocks allow organisms to anticipate environmental changes associated with the diurnal light/dark cycle. Circadian oscillators have been described in plants and green algae, cyanobacteria, animals and fungi, however, little is known about the circadian clocks of photosynthetic eukaryotes outside the green lineage. Stramenopiles are a diverse group of secondary endosymbionts whose plastid originated from a red alga. Photosynthetic stramenopiles, which include diatoms and brown algae, play key roles in biogeochemical cycles and are important components of marine ecosystems. Genome annotation efforts indicated the presence of a novel type of oscillator in these organisms and the first circadian clock component in a stramenopile has been recently discovered. This review summarizes the phenotypic characterization of circadian rhythms in stramenopiles and current efforts to determine the mechanisms of this ‘brown clock’. The elucidation of this brown clock will enable a deeper understanding of the role of self-sustained oscillations in the adaptation to life in marine environments.  相似文献

A collection of 56 bacteria isolated from different surfaces in the marine environment were assayed for their effects on the germination of spores from the common green alga Ulva lactuca. Thirteen bacterial isolates were shown to inhibit spore germination. Of these bacteria, Pseudoalteromonas tunicata displayed the most pronounced effects against algal spores. Further characterisation of the anti-algal activity of P. tunicata was performed and it was found that this bacterium produces an extracellular component with specific activity toward algal spores that is heat-sensitive, polar and between 3 and 10 kDa in size. This biologically active compound was also found to prevent the germination of spores from the red alga Polysiphonia sp. and, given the widespread occurrence of P. tunicata in a range of marine habitats, this may suggest that it is effective against a variety of marine algae.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of subtidal laminarian and fucoid algae, echinoids, and four species of herbivorous gastropods were assessed. Line transects and stratified random quadrats were used, encompassing different depths and seven localities ranging over 1000km in northern New Zealand. This sampling was carried out to form a quantitative basis on which to pose hypotheses for later experimental work. Several patterns were apparent, both within and between localities. Fucoid algae were characteristic of depths between 0–6 m, while laminarian algae had peaks of abundance at 3–6 m and from 10–17 m. Intermediate depths were characterized by areas bare of large brown algae, with high densities of echinoids and gastropods. This pattern of a bimodal depth distribution of algae and abundant grazers at intermediate depth was a consistent feature of the northern coastal sites and the semi-exposed offshore islands. Size—frequency distributions for algae at these sites showed that the largest fucoids generally occurred in very shallow water, while the dominant laminarian alga tended to have larger individuals at depths of 10–14 m. In all cases, the biomass distribution with depth of the algal species mirrored their numerical abundance.

Differences between localities were associated both with environmental factors and the unique algal floras of some offshore islands. Echinoids and gastropods were rare at the two most exposed localities, which were also at the extremes of the geographic range. At these sites, depths between 6–10 m were occupied by large brown algae. Deep-water fucoid algae occurred at two offshore localities but the predominant species at one of them was peculiar to that island group.

Because of the general consistency between localities, and the few exceptions to these patterns, hypotheses are considered which could be tested on a local scale to account for echinoid and algal abundances and depth distributions. Our results indicate that the chief questions concerning the structuring of subtidal algal communities are demographic in nature and that an assessment of the status of individual organisms, rather than biomass or productivity, is the appropriate approach to resolve these questions.  相似文献

Jordan has witnessed a rapid industrial development in the last twenty years. This has lead to the release of waste materials or pollutants into the marine environment, particularly nearby Aqaba Port. The present study investigates the levels of zinc, cadmium and lead in four brown algae, three red algae and four green algal species collected from Aqaba. Three different levels of lead and zinc concentrations were found: the highest level of both metals is exhibited among brown algae; intermediate level is exhibited among red algae and the lowest level is seen among the green algae. Very low concentrations of cadmium were found in all examined algal species. The results indicate that the brown algal species Cystosira myrica, Sargassum asperifolium, Sargassum neglectum, and Sargassum subrepandum always contain the highest concentrations of lead and zinc, but these algae are less contaminated than brown algae from industrial European seas.  相似文献

Synopsis A revitalized view of feeding by herbivorous marine fishes is sought through two questions. First, What characteristics of major taxa of algae identify them as predictably high or low quality foods? Second, are marine algae valuable foods for fishes which do not mechanically disrupt cell walls and do not harbor specialized enzymes or microbes capable of lysing cell walls? Energy, ash and nutrient content of 16 species of marine algae were employed to assess food quality of fleshy red, green, brown and calcareous red algae. On the basis of ash, calories, total protein and total lipid content, fleshy algae should be superior to calcareous algae as foods for fishes; in addition, green algae should be superior to brown algae and brown algae superior to red algae. When the probable digestibility of storage and extracellular carbohydrates is considered, green and red algae are predicted superior to brown algae as food. Two species of damselfishes (Pomacentridae) from the Gulf of California,Eupomacentrus rectifraenum andMicrospathodon dorsalis, eat red and green algae and ignore brown and calcareous algae. They feed, therefore, in a fashion consistent with predictions based only on algal chemistry. These fishes absorb at least 20–24% of the biomass, 57–67% of the protein, 46–56% of the lipid and 37–44% of the carbohydrate contained in algae eaten in the wild. Since these damselfishes do not masticate their food, it appears that herbivorous fishes can digest major fractions of algal nutrients without mechanical destruction of algal cells.  相似文献

Brown algae are multicellular photosynthetic marine organisms, ubiquitous on rocky intertidal shores at cold and temperate latitudes. Nevertheless, little is known about many aspects of their biology, particularly their development. Given their phylogenetic distance (1.6 billion years) from other plant organisms (land plants, and green and red algae), brown algae harbor a high, as-yet undiscovered diversity of biological mechanisms governing their development. They also show great morphological plasticity, responding to specific environmental constraints, such as sea currents, reduced light availability, grazer attacks, desiccation and UV exposure. Here, we show that brown algal morphogenesis is rather simple and flexible, and review recent genomic data on the cellular and molecular mechanisms known to date that can possibly account for this developmental strategy.  相似文献

Brown algae belong to a phylogenetic lineage distantly related to land plants and animals. They are almost exclusively found in the intertidal zone, a harsh and frequently changing environment where organisms are submitted to marine and terrestrial constraints. In relation with their unique evolutionary history and their habitat, they feature several peculiarities, including at the level of their primary and secondary metabolism. The establishment of Ectocarpus siliculosus as a model organism for brown algae has represented a framework in which several omics techniques have been developed, in particular, to study the response of these organisms to abiotic stresses. With the recent publication of medium to high throughput profiling data, it is now possible to envision integrating observations at the cellular scale to apply systems biology approaches. As a first step, we propose a protocol focusing on integrating heterogeneous knowledge gained on brown algal metabolism. The resulting abstraction of the system will then help understanding how brown algae cope with changes in abiotic parameters within their unique habitat, and to decipher some of the mechanisms underlying their (1) acclimation and (2) adaptation, respectively consequences of (1) the behavior or (2) the topology of the system resulting from the integrative approach.  相似文献

Sulfated fucans and galactans are strongly anionic polysaccharides found in marine organisms. Their structures vary among species, but their major features are conserved among phyla. Sulfated fucans are found in marine brown algae and echinoderms, whereas sulfated galactans occur in red and green algae, marine angiosperms, tunicates (ascidians), and sea urchins. Polysaccharides with 3-linked, beta-galactose units are highly conserved in some taxonomic groups of marine organisms and show a strong tendency toward 4-sulfation in algae and marine angiosperms, and 2-sulfation in invertebrates. Marine algae mainly express sulfated polysaccharides with complex, heterogeneous structures, whereas marine invertebrates synthesize sulfated fucans and sulfated galactans with regular repetitive structures. These polysaccharides are structural components of the extracellular matrix. Sulfated fucans and galactans are involved in sea urchin fertilization acting as species-specific inducers of the sperm acrosome reaction. Because of this function the structural evolution of sulfated fucans could be a component in the speciation process. The algal and invertebrate polysaccharides are also potent anticoagulant agents of mammalian blood and represent a potential source of compounds for antithrombotic therapies.  相似文献

Chemical communications play an important role in plants, fungi, and algae. Volatile organic compounds in marine algae are released into the seawater. These compounds play a role as either pheromones or allelochemicals. We observed that the turbinid gastropod Lunella coronata coreensis inhabits the intertidal zone and often grazes the green alga Ulva pertusa. Feeding tests and feeding preference studies were performed with green, brown and red algae or by using the powdered freeze-dried seaweed in agar. The snails fed on U. pertusa preferentially compared to the other marine algae, and recognized chemoreception compounds from the alga but not their structural or morphological differences. From feeding tests using artificial foods, it is suggested that the feeding attractants are in the essential oil of the alga U. pertusa.  相似文献

Four species of brown algae, Sphacelaria arctica, S. plumosa, Desmarestia aculeata , and midribs of a Fucus species have been found in Holocene and interstadial deposits in Greenland. The green alga Chlorochytrium dermatocolax and the red alga Audoui-nella cfr. microscopica are reported for the first time in such deposits. All species are present in the extant flora of marine, benthic algae from Greenland. They are very well preserved and can be identified to species level.  相似文献

Photosynthetic action spectra of marine algae   总被引:29,自引:0,他引:29
A polarographic oxygen determination, with tissue in direct contact with a stationary platinum electrode, has been used to measure the photosynthetic response of marine algae. These were exposed to monochromatic light, of equal energy, at some 35 points through the visible spectrum (derived from a monochromator). Ulva and Monostroma (green algae) show action spectra which correspond very closely to their absorption spectra. Coilodesme (a brown alga) shows almost as good correspondence, including the spectral region absorbed by the carotenoid, fucoxanthin. In green and brown algae, light absorbed by both chlorophyll and carotenoids seems photosynthetically effective, although some inactive absorption by carotenoids is indicated. Action spectra for a wide variety of red algae, however, show marked deviations from their corresponding absorption spectra. The photosynthetic rates are high in the spectral regions absorbed by the water-soluble "phycobilin" pigments (phycoerythrin and phycocyanin), while the light absorbed by chlorophyll and carotenoids is poorly utilized for oxygen production. In red algae containing chiefly phycoerythrin, the action spectrum closely resembles that of the water-extracted pigment, with peaks corresponding to its absorption maxima (495, 540, and 565 mµ). Such algae include Delesseria, Schizymenia, and Porphyrella. In the genus Porphyra, there is a series P. nereocystis, P. naiadum, and P. perforata, with increasingly more phycocyanin and less phycoerythrin: the action spectra reflect this, with increasing activity in the orange-red region (600 to 640 mµ) where phycocyanin absorbs. In all these red algae, photosynthesis is almost minimal at 435 mµ and 675 mµ, where chlorophyll shows maximum absorption. Although the chlorophylls (and carotenoids) are present in quantities comparable to the green algae, their function is apparently not that of a primary light absorber; this role is taken over by the phycobilins. In this respect the red algae (Rhodophyta) appear unique among photosynthetic plants.  相似文献

Surfaces immersed in the marine environment are under intense fouling pressure by a number of invertebrates and algae. The regulation of this fouling can often be attributed to the bacterial biofilm that quickly develops on the surface of any available substratum in the ocean. The bacterial community composition on the surface of the green alga Dictyosphaeria ocellata was investigated and compared to those found on two other green algae, Batophora oerstedii and Cladophoropsis macromeres, and on a reference surface from three sites along the Florida Keys. Although the bacterial community composition of D. ocellata was not consistent across the sites, it was significantly different from the other algae and the reference surface at two of the three sites tested. Methanol extracts of D. ocellata significantly affected the abundance of bacteria and composition of the bacterial community on Phytagel? plates when compared to solvent controls, suggesting that the alga regulates the bacterial community by producing active metabolites.  相似文献

Distribution of photosystem II (PSII) extrinsic proteins was examined using antibodies raised against various extrinsic proteins from different sources. The results showed that a glaucophyte (Cyanophora paradoxa) having the most primitive plastids contained the cyanobacterial-type extrinsic proteins (PsbO, PsbV, PsbU), and the primitive red algae (Cyanidium caldarium) contained the red algal-type extrinsic proteins (PsO, PsbQ', PsbV, PsbU), whereas a prasinophyte (Pyraminonas parkeae), which is one of the most primitive green algae, contained the green algal-type ones (PsbO, PsbP, PsbQ). These suggest that the extrinsic proteins had been diverged into cyanobacterial-, red algal- and green algal-types during early phases of evolution after a primary endosymbiosis. This study also showed that a haptophyte, diatoms and brown algae, which resulted from red algal secondary endosymbiosis, contained the red algal-type, whereas Euglena gracilis resulted from green algal secondary endosymbiosis contained the green algal-type extrinsic proteins, suggesting that the red algal- and green algal-type extrinsic proteins have been retained unchanged in the different lines of organisms following the secondary endosymbiosis. Based on these immunological analyses, together with the current genome data, the evolution of photosynthetic oxygen-evolving PSII was discussed from a view of distribution of the extrinsic proteins, and a new model for the evolution of the PSII extrinsic proteins was proposed.  相似文献

The lipid and fatty acid compositions in two edible subtropical algae (the brown alga Cladosiphon okamuranus Tokida and the green alga Caulerpa lentillifera J. Agardh) were determined to clarify their lipid characteristics and nutritional values. Glycolipids and phospholipids were the major lipid classes, with significant levels of triacylglycerols. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were the major fatty acids of both algae. The lipid class composition and major fatty acids were similar in both the algal species, irrespective of wild and cultured specimens. Typical n‐6 PUFA, such as 18:2n‐6 (linoleic acid) and 20:4n‐6 (arachidonic acid), occurred in characteristically high levels in both of the algae. High levels of n‐3 PUFA were measured in all lipid classes of both species without 22:6n‐3 (docosahexaenoic acid), 18:3n‐3, 18:4n‐3, and 20:5n‐3 (eicosapentaenoic acid) for Cl. okamuranus; and 16:3n‐3, 18:3n‐3, and 20:5n‐3 for Ca. lentillifera. The finding suggests that the green algal species, which mainly biosynthesizes short‐chain (C16 and C18) PUFA, differs from that of the brown alga, which is capable of biosynthesizing high 20:5n‐3 levels. The PUFA levels in glycolipids of the two algal species comprised up to 60%, even though they are subtropical marine species. High n‐6 PUFA levels in the algal lipids probably influence the significant levels of n‐6 PUFA in herbivorous fishes, because the n‐6 PUFA levels in marine fish lipids are generally undetectable or negligible.  相似文献
