Summary The comparative fine structure of ultimobranchial (UB) glands of adult Israeli anurans (Bufo viridis, Rana ridibunda, Hyla arborea) taken in the wild during the breeding season is presented. Common aspects of the UB secretory cells are considered with especial reference to secretory granules, lipid droplets and tonofilaments. In B. viridis a second cell type with large electron-dense cytoplasmic granules is found in UB follicles. R. ridibunda and H. arborea UB follicles have a second cell type similar to goblet cells in appearance and these appear to be discharging their mucoid contents into the lumina of the follicles. The possible significance of these various cell types is considered.I am indebted to the Central Research Fund of London University for an award for apparatus and travel enabling a short research visit to the Dept. of Zoology, The Hebrew University, Jerusalem and am particularly indebted to Dr. Dvorah Boschwitz and her colleagues for their enormous help during my visit. Summary Tadpoles ofBufo calamita, a species that spawns in little temporary pools, were tested on intra- and interspecific crowding-effects. Water was conditioned by tadpoles of the following species:Bufo calamita (tadpoles of different age),Alytes obstetricans, Bombina variegata, Bufo bufo, Hyla arborea, Rana lessonae, R. ridibunda andR. temporaria. Tadpoles ofBufo calamita are most sensitive to water conditioned by older tadpoles of the own species during the first 2–3 weeks of development. They are also strongly inhibited by tadpoles ofRana temporaria andBufo bufo (that, as a rule, do not occur in the same habitat). Relative little effects are observed in water conditioned by tadpoles of the two species that occur very often in ecological sympatry withBufo calamita: Hyla arborea andBombina variegata. Young tadpoles ofBufo calamita are most tolerant of tadpoles of the same age of the own species. The crowding-effect increases with the number and weight of tadpoles/volume conditioning the water. In the age of 2–3 weeks the sensibility to intra- and interspecific crowding-effects fades. Thus inBufo calamita the age specific sensibility to crowding-effects in tadpoles may act as a density regulation mechanism in temporary pools.

In Lake Glubokoe, the Amphibia are represented by five species. Two numerous species, Rana temporaria L. and Bufo bufo L., spawn in the lake and appear to be a significant component of its ecosystem. Thus, in autumn R. temporaria is a common food for predatory fish (pike, perch). During their wintering R. temporaria participate in the consumption of oxygen from the water. They may be a source of dangerous infections. Their tadpoles and those of B. bufo feed in the lake and annually remove substances from it. Adult R. temporaria in autumn, and the young of the year of R. temporaria and of B. bufo influence the population numbers of small littoral invertebrates. Several dozen pairs of Rana terrestris Andrzejw are observed to spawn regularly. Rana esculenta L. and Rana ridibunda Pallas are scarce. The influence of introducing a nature preserve on the numbers of Amphibia in Lake Glubokoe is discussed.  相似文献

The European waterfrog Rana esculenta (RL‐genotype) is a natural hybrid between R. ridibunda (RR) and R. lessonae (LL) and reproduces by hybridogenesis, i.e. it eliminates the L‐genome from the germline and produces gametes only containing the clonally transmitted R‐genome. Because of the lack of recombination, R‐genomes are prone to accumulate spontaneous deleterious mutations. The homozygous effects of such mutations become evident in matings between hybrids: their offspring possess two clonal R‐genomes and are generally inviable. However, the evolutionary fate of R. esculenta mainly depends on the heterozygous effects of mutations on the R‐genome. These effects may be hidden in the hybrid R. esculenta because it has been shown to benefit from spontaneous heterosis. To uncouple clonal inheritance from hybridity, I crossed R. esculenta with R. ridibunda to produce nonhybrid offspring with one clonal and one sexual R‐genome, and compared their survival and larval performance with normal, sexually produced R. ridibunda tadpoles. Because environmental stress can enhance the negative effects of mutation accumulation, I measured the performance at high and low food levels. There was no indication that tadpoles with a clonal genome performed worse at either food level, suggesting that at least in the larval stage, R. esculenta benefits from heterosis without incurring any costs because of heterozygous effects of deleterious mutations on the clonally transmitted R‐genome.  相似文献

Abstract The hemiclonal waterfrog Rana esculenta (RL genotype), a bisexual hybrid between R. ridibunda (RR) and R. lessonae (LL), eliminates the L genome from its germline and clonally transmits the R genome (hybridogenesis). Matings between hybrids produce R. ridibunda offspring, but they generally die at an early larval stage. Mortality may be due to fixed recessive deleterious mutations in the clonally inherited R genomes that were either acquired through the advance of Muller's ratchet or else frozen in these genomes at hemiclone formation. From this hypothesis results a straightforward prediction: Matings between different hemiclones, that is, between R. esculenta possessing different R genomes of independent origin, should produce viable R. ridibunda offspring because it is unlikely that different clonal lineages have become fixed for the same mutations. I tested this prediction by comparing survival and larval performance of tadpoles from within‐ and between‐population crossings using R. esculenta from Seseglio (Se) in southern, Alpnach (Al) in central, and Elliker Auen (El) in northern Switzerland, respectively. Se is isolated from the other populations by the Alps. Enzyme electrophoresis revealed that parents from Se belonged to a single hemiclone that was different from all hemiclones found north of the Alps. Parents from Al also belonged to one hemiclone, but parents from El belonged to three hemiclones, one of which was indistinguishable from the one in Al. Rana esculenta from Se produced inviable tadpoles when crossed with other hybrids of their own population, but when crossed with R. esculenta from Al and El, tadpoles successfully completed metamorphosis, supporting the hypothesis I tested. Within‐population crosses from Al were also inviable, but some within‐population crosses from El, where three hemiclones were present, produced viable offspring. Only part of the crosses between Al and El were viable, but there was no consistent relationship between hemiclone combination and tadpole survival. When backcrossed with the parental species R. ridibunda, hybrids from all source populations produced viable offspring. Performance of these tadpoles with a sexual and a clonal genome was comparable to that of normal, sexually produced R. ridibunda tadpoles. Thus, in the heterozygous state, the deleterious mutations on the clonal R genomes did not appear to reduce tadpole fitness.  相似文献

Because of intrinsic demographic load induced by hybridogenesis (infertility of homotypic hybrid matings), the maintenance of hybrid lineages supposes that they present better performances (heterosis) than their host species which allows them to coexist on a long-term basis. However, this necessity of high fitness can be relaxed if a relative niche partitioning occurs between the taxa, each of them differing in their ecological optima. In the waterfrog hybridogenetic complex (Rana esculenta complex), recent studies have revealed that hybrids show intermediate distribution between parental species across a gradient of river influence (that is related to a gradient of oxygen levels), and intermediate performances of their tadpoles with regard to oxygen availability (hypoxia). In investigating oxygen consumption rates, survival time in anoxia, and metabolite contents in the three forms of the complex, the present study confirms intermediate characteristics of hybrid tadpoles (R. esculenta) when compared to both parental lineages (R. lessonae and R. ridibunda). Whereas R. ridibunda tadpoles were the most sensitive to anoxia, R. lessonae tadpoles were the most tolerant. Because oxygen requirements of the hybrid proved to be intermediate, no heterosis was detected. These results confirm the hypothesis of the intermediate niche hypothesis to explain the coexistence of R. lessonae and R. esculenta and the success of the hybridogens.  相似文献

  • 1.1. The capacity of five anuran Amphibians (Bufo viridis B. regularis, Rana ridibunda, Hyla arborea and Pelobates syriacus) to acclimate to NaCl and urea solutions was investigated.
  • 2.2. All species could be acclimated to relatively high concentrations of urea solutions, while only Bufo viridis and Hyla arborea could be acclimated to 500 mOsm/kg or higher NaCl solutions.
  • 3.3. The plasma urea concentration in B. viridis and H. arborea was elevated to levels over 140 mmol/1.
  • 4.4. The sum of plasma sodium and chloride concentrations did not increase over 400 mmol/l in any species.
  • 5.5. Urine osmolality, which was normally low, increased, but never exceeded the plasma osmolality.
  • 6.6. In the urea acclimation conditions, urine electrolytes diminished, similarly in all species in this study.
  • 7.7. It is concluded that anuran Amphibians can tolerate high plasma urea concentrations, but only those species which can elevate it, either through retention or net synthesis, can be acclimated to high salt solutions.

We conducted an artificial pond experiment to assess the direct and indirect effects of predation on Bufo viridis tadpoles. We ran three treatments: free Anax (unrestrained predatory dragonfly nymph Anax imperator), caged Anax (non-consumptive effects), and control (no Anax). Anax showed both strong consumptive and non-consumptive effects on Bufo tadpoles. Free Anax eliminated all of the tadpoles within six days. Tadpoles preferred the shady side of the ponds. Caged Anax caused tadpoles to increase their spatial preferences. Tadpoles avoided the center of the pond, and in the presence of the caged predator, they were found in the center even less. Tadpoles also showed a strong preference for crowding together, and in the presence of a caged Anax, they tended to crowd more. Moreover, Bufo metamorphosed earlier and at a larger size in the caged Anax ponds, possibly by providing extra food resources due to the extra organic matter excreted by the predators. The morphology and development of the larval oral apparatus of Rana dalmatina, Bombina variegata, Bufo bufo, and Bufo viridis are described and compared using scanning electron microscopy. The species show different arrangements of the mouthparts. The small oral apparatus of R. dalmatina larvae has three labial tooth rows on the upper labium, while there are four tooth rows on the lower labium with a medial gap in row proximal to the mouth. The margins of the oral apparatus are defined by papillae that encircle the lower labium. B. variegata tadpoles have two upper labial tooth rows and three lower labial tooth rows that are uninterrupted, unlike the ones of R. dalmatina. The mouth is encircled by papillae that are larger than those of R. dalmatina. The oral discs of tadpoles of both B. bufo and B. viridis are similar. They are defined by two upper labial tooth rows (the second of which is interrupted by a medial gap) and by three lower tooth rows that differ in lengths in the two Bufo species. Both species develop papillae on the mouth angles and in two rows on the upper labium. Some morphological differences among the oral discs of R. dalmatina, B. variegata, B. bufo, and B. viridis tadpoles can be attributed to phylogenetic differences, but most can be related to their varying feeding habits and/or to their dietary specializations.  相似文献

The present work aimed to contribute to the understanding of the adaptation of the glycolytic pathway in tissues of frog Rana ridibunda and land snail species Helix lucorum during seasonal hibernation. Moreover responses of glycolytic enzymes from cold acclimated R. ridibunda and H. lucorum were studied as well. The drop in Po2 in the blood of hibernated frogs and land snails indicated lower oxygen consumption and a decrease in their metabolic rate. The activities of glycolytic enzymes indicated that hibernation had a differential effect on the glycolyis in the two species studied and also in the tissues of the same species. The activity of l-LDH decreased significantly in the skeletal muscle and heart of hibernated R. ridibunda indicating a low glycolytic potential. Similar biochemical responses were observed in the same tissues during cold acclimation. The continuous increase in the activities of glycolytic enzymes studied, except for HK, might indicate a compensation for the impacts of low temperature on the enzymatic activities. In contrast to R. ridibunda, the activities of the enzymes increased and remained at higher levels than those of the prehibernation controls indicating maintenance of glycolytic potential in the tissues of hibernating land snails.  相似文献

Abstract Seasonal cold-acclimation patterns and the effects of photoperiod and temperature on cold-hardiness of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. and Hibiscus syriacus L. were determined. Field-grown H. rosasinensis consistently failed to survive freezing at - 2°C. Two genotypes of field- and container-grown H. syriacus initiated cold-acclimation in mid September, in response to decreasing daylength, and continued to an ultimate midwinter hardiness level of - 27°C in early February. Controlled environment experiments using combinations of short days (SD) and cool day/night temperatures were unable to induce even minimal cold acclimation of H. rosasinensis. In controlled environments, H. syriacus attained a moderate amount of cold tolerance at warm temperatures and long days (LD). Low night temperature combined with LD, warm day produced the same degree of cold-acclimation as the SD treatments. While not essential, SD enhanced H. syriacus cold-acclimation in controlled environments. A - 5°C frost treatment of intact plants did not enhance cold-hardiness of H. syriacus.  相似文献

Introduced Rana ridibunda currentlyreplace the native waterfrogs R. lessonaeand R. esculenta in several areas ofcentral Europe. The unusual reproductive systemin waterfrogs of the Rana esculentacomplex suggests that this replacement may bedriven by a genetic mechanism: Ranaesculenta, a hybrid between R. ridibundaand R. lessonae, eliminates the lessonae genome from the germline and clonallytransmits the ridibunda genome(hybridogenesis). Hybrids form mixedpopulations with R. lessonae (L-E-system)in which they persist by backcrossing with theparental species. Matings between hybrids areunsuccessful, because their ridibundagenomes contain fixed recessive deleteriousmutations. When introduced into a L-E-system,R. ridibunda can mate with both nativetaxa, producing R. ridibunda offspringwith R. esculenta, and R. esculentaoffspring with R. lessonae (primaryhybridizations). If primary hybrids arehybridogenetic, they produce viable R.ridibunda offspring in matings with otherhybrids, because their clonal genomes areunlikely to share the deleterious allelespresent in the ancient clones. Thus, R.ridibunda will increase in the population atthe expense of both native taxa, eventuallyleaving a pure R. ridibunda population. We provide three lines of evidence for thisprocess from a currently invaded population inSwitzerland: (1) Primary hybridizations takeplace, as roughly 10% of hybrids in thepopulation possess ridibunda genomesderived from the introduced frogs. (2)Hybridogenesis occurs in primary hybrids, although at a low frequency. (3) Many hybrid ×hybrid matings in the population indeed produceviable offspring. Hence, the proposed geneticmechanism appears to contribute to the speciesreplacement, although its importance may belimited.  相似文献

The vitamin A (retinol) and its metabolites such as retinoic acid (RA) affect vertebrate gametogenesis. The level of RA in cells relies on the balance between its synthesis and degradation. The sex-dependent equilibrium is reached in different ways in various species. It is known that RA induces meiosis in developing gonads in mouse, chicken and urodel amphibians, but its role in anuran amphibians has not been studied. Here we show in six anuran species (Xenopus laevis, Bombina bombina, Hyla arborea, Bufo viridis, Rana arvalis and Rana temporaria) that cultured undifferentiated gonads were insensitive to RA treatment, but the RA induced ectopic meiosis in cultured larval testes. In larval testes of all studied species, the exogenous RA induced leptotene phase of I meiotic prophase in gonia, but only in H. arborea and B. viridis gonia progressed to zygotene phase. In the cultured developing ovaries, exogenous RA led to increase in the number of oocytes as compared to the control. Inhibition of either RA synthesis or RA-receptors prevented meiotic entry in larval gonads of all species. Exogenous RA rescued this inhibitory effect demonstrating that the balance in RA homeostasis plays a key role in meiotic entry in anuran gonads. The localization of two enzymes, Raldh2 and Cyp26b1, which antagonistically control RA levels and whose abundance suggests the sites of RA synthesis and degradation respectively, showed two distinct expression patterns specific for (i) X. laevis, H. arborea, R. arvalis, R. temporaria and (ii) B. bombina, B. viridis. Thus, RA, in correlation with specific expression patterns of Raldh2 and Cyp26b, induces meiosis during gonad development in anurans. In addition, in B. viridis, RA signalling seems important for development of the Bidder’s organ containing oocytes both in males and females.  相似文献

Summary Hybridogenetic species possess a hybrid genome: half is clonally inherited (hemiclonal reproduction) while the other half is obtained each generation by sexual reproduction with a parental species. We addressed the question of whether different hemiclones of the hybridogenetic water frogRana esculenta are locally adapted for genetic compatibility with their sexual parental hostRana lessonae. We artificially crossedR. esculenta females of three hemiclones (GUT1, GUT2 and GUT3) from a pond near Gütighausen, Switzerland and one hemiclone (HEL1) from near Hellberg, Switzerland each toR. lessonae males from both populations. We also created primary hybrids by crossing the sameR. lessonae males from both populations toR. ridibunda females from Pozna, Poland (POZ). Tadpoles were then reared in the laboratory at two food levels to assess their performance related to early larval growth rate, body size at metamorphosis and length of the larval period. Tadpoles from hemiclones GUT1, GUT3 and POZ had higher growth rates than those from hemiclones GUT2 and HEL1 at the low food level, but at the high food level all growth rates were higher and diverged significantly between hemiclones GUT2 and HEL1. Tadpoles from the intrapopulational crosses GUT2 × GUT and HEL1 × HEL were larger at metamorphosis than those from the interpopulational crosses GUT2 × HEL and HEL1 × GUT. A high food level increased the size at metamorphosis in all tadpoles. A high food level also decreased the days to metamorphosis and tadpoles from GUT1, GUT3 and POZ had the shortest larval period whereas those from GUT2 and HEL1 had the longest. These results indicate that the differential compatibility of clonal genomes may play an important role in hybridogenetic species successfully using locally adapted sexual genomes of parental species and that interclonal selection is likely important in determining the distribution of hemiclones among local populations.  相似文献

Early breeding intraguild predators may have advantages over late breeding predators via priority effects; early breeding predators may reduce shared prey resources before late breeders appear and may also prey upon the late breeders. Here we show that predatory larvae of the late-breeding predatory banded newt, Triturus vittatus vittatus, occupy the same temporary pond toward the end of the developmental period of the early-breeding predatory fire salamander, Salamandra salamandra, resulting in a large size disparity between larvae of these two species while they co-occur. We conducted outdoor artificial pool experiments to assess priority effects of large larval Salamandra at the end of their larval development period, on recently hatched larval Triturus. We also assessed how artificial vegetation may influence larval Triturus performance in the presence or absence of Salamandra Salamandra, introduced into the experimental pools two weeks prior to the newt larvae, strongly reduced invertebrate prey abundance shared by these two predatory urodeles and with only a one week period of overlap, strongly reduced abundance of Triturus larvae. The artificial vegetation had only a small ameliorating effect on Triturus survival when Salamandra was present. Triturus size at metamorphosis (snout-tail length) was significantly larger in the Salamandra pools, presumably due to a combination of a strong “thinning effect” and greater vulnerability of smaller Triturus individuals to predation by Salamandra. Time to metamorphosis was not significantly affected by Salamandra. These results have conservation implications as T. v. vittatus is listed as highly endangered and may also explain the largely negative spatial association of the two species.
Summary Tadpoles of Rana temporaria which have been raised in an artificial pond prey in the experimental situation shown in Fig. 1 upon the spawn of the following sympatric European Anura species: Rana temporaria (cannibalism), Rana esculenta, Rana ridibunda, Bufo bufo, Bufo calamita, Bombina variegata and Hyla arborea (predation). — Rana temporaria is an early breeder. Thus selection pressure acts in the following ways: Rana temporaria establishes for itself an explosive breeding pattern. Species which breed later in the year in shallow water are suppressed in the biotope of Rana temporaria and develop other biotope preferences (Bombina variegata, Bufo calamita, Hyla arborea). Rana esculenta, Rana ridibunda and Bufo bufo spawn in deeper water. Therefore they are scarcely exposed to the tadpoles of Rana temporaria. Moreover Bufo bufo, too, is an early breeder. Alytes obstetricans laying no spawn in the water is not endangered. — An analysis of biotope preferences and breeding times of the species involved confirms these interpretations.

Tadpole competition in a desert anuran community   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
B. D. Woodward 《Oecologia》1982,54(1):96-100
Summary Five interspecific competition experiments performed in artificial ponds under temporary pond-like conditions established that temporary and permanent pond tadpoles interact. Temporary pond species typically lowered survivorship and reduced progress towards metamorphosis of permanent pond tadpoles. These results suggest that competitive interactions may partially determine the local distribution of tadpoles in the Chihuahuan Desert by preventing some permanent pond anurans from using temporary ponds. Predation by Scaphiopus multiplicatus tadpoles (a temporary pond species) may also prevent permanent pond tadpoles from using temporary ponds.  相似文献

Benthic invertebrates mediate bottom–up and top–down influences in aquatic food webs, and changes in the abundance or traits of invertebrates can alter the strength of top–down effects. Studies assessing the role of invertebrate abundance and behavior as controls on food web structure are rare at the whole ecosystem scale. Here we use a comparative approach to investigate bottom–up and top–down influences on whole anchialine pond ecosystems in coastal Hawai‘i. In these ponds, a single species of endemic atyid shrimp (Halocaridina rubra) is believed to structure epilithon communities. Many Hawaiian anchialine ponds and their endemic fauna, however, have been greatly altered by bottom–up (increased nutrient enrichment) and top–down (introduced fish predators) disturbances from human development. We present the results of a survey of dissolved nutrient concentrations, epilithon biomass and composition, and H. rubra abundance and behavior in anchialine ponds with and without invasive predatory fish along a nutrient concentration gradient on the North Kona coast of Hawai‘i. We use linear models to assess 1) the effects of nutrient loading and fish introductions on pond food web structure and 2) the role of shrimp density and behavior in effecting that change. We find evidence for bottom–up food web control, in that nutrients were associated with increased epilithon biomass, autotrophy and nutrient content as well as increased abundance and size of H. rubra. We also find evidence for top–down control, as ponds with invasive predatory fish had higher epilithon biomass, productivity, and nutrient content. Top–down effects were transmitted by both altered H. rubra abundance, which changed the biomass of epilithon, and H. rubra behavior, which changed the composition of the epilithon. Our study extends experimental findings on bottom–up and top–down control to the whole ecosystem scale and finds evidence for qualitatively different effects of trait‐ and density‐mediated change in top–down influences.  相似文献

Summary The auditory thresholds of three frogs-two subspecies of the genusHyla (H. a. arborea, H. a. savignyi) and one of the genusRana (R. r. ridibunda)—were measured at 5°, 12°, 20° and 28°C, by recording multi-unit activity from the torus semicircularis. In the tree frogs, the upper limit of the audible range is 7,000 Hz. At 5°C the best frequency is 3,000 Hz; the threshold (expressed in dB SPL in all cases) at this frequency is 49 dB (males) and 43 dB (females) forH. a. arborea and 42 dB (males) and 48 dB (females) forH. a. savignyi. At 12°C the thresholds are lower, and they are lower still at 20°, reaching a minimum, at 3,000 Hz, of 42 dB (males) and 38 dB (females) forH. a. arborea and 41 dB (males) and 40 dB (females) forH. a. savignyi. At frequencies of 1,000 Hz and lower, thresholds are high at 5°C; in part of this range they are considerably lowered at 20°C, whereas at 28°C there is a reduction in sensitivity to most frequencies inH. a. arborea, amounting to more than 10 dB in the males.H. a. savignyi differs in this regard; at 28° sensitivity is no less than at lower temperatures, and in fact is greater in the range 1,000–1,400 Hz. The audible range ofR. r. ridibunda is more restricted than that of the tree frogs, but it is more sensitive within this range. The highest frequency is 4,500 Hz. At 5°C the thresholds of the males are lowest at 500–600 Hz (42 dB) and 1,400–1,900 Hz (ca. 39 dB). The best frequencies of the females are 700 Hz (38 dB) and 1,400 Hz (36 dB). At 12°C the thresholds at 300 Hz and 1,000 Hz are markedly lowered, by 10–18 dB. The thresholds of the females at 20°C are still lower over almost the entire audible range, whereas in the males only part of the range is affected. This difference persists at 28°C, the threshold curve of the males being slightly raised, while that of the females is unchanged. Latencies are dependent upon temperature and sound pressure. With a rise in temperature from 5° to 20°C the latency falls by ca. 8 ms. An increase in sound pressure from 5 dB to 30 dB SPL shortens the latency by ca. 10 ms. These changes were found in all the frogs studied.  相似文献
