2002年3~8月对广西防城万鹤山营巢的鹭类繁殖种群进行了调查研究,结果表明:万鹤山栖息有大白鹭(Egretta alba)、中白鹭(Egretta intermedia)、白鹭(Egretta garzetta)、黄嘴白鹭(Egretta eulophotes)、牛背鹭(Bubulcus ibis)、池鹭(Ardeda bacchus)、夜鹭(Nycticorax nycticorax)7种鹭类种群。除黄嘴白鹭为均匀分布之外,其他6种均为成群分布。鹭类在万鹤山上营巢繁殖具有明显的水平分布和垂直分布现象。对影响鹭类混群繁殖时空间分布的因素及各种群间的相互关系进行了探讨。  相似文献

We examined head stabilization in relation to body mass and length of legs in four heron species (little egrets, Egretta garzetta; night herons, Nycticorax nycticorax; squacco herons, Ardeola ralloides; and cattle egrets, Bubulcus ibis: Aves: Ardeidae). Head stabilization, under controlled, sinusoidal, perch perturbations was mostly elicited at frequencies lower than 1 Hz. Maximal perturbation amplitudes sustained were positively correlated with leg length and maximal perturbation frequencies sustained were negatively correlated with body mass and with leg length. The species differed significantly in average maximal perturbation amplitudes sustained. Combinations of amplitude and frequency for which stabilization was achieved were bounded by a decreasing concave "envelope" curve in the frequency-amplitude plane, with inter specific differences in "envelope". As physical constraints, we tested maximal vertical acceleration, which translates into a line defined by the product of frequency2 x amplitude, and maximal vertical velocity, which translates into a line defined by the product of frequency x amplitude. Both relations were in good agreement with the experimental results for all but squacco herons. The results support predictions based on mechanical considerations and may explain the predominance of motor patterns employed by herons while foraging.  相似文献

Factors affecting bird population dynamics include climate, harvesting by humans, and habitat changes. Here, we describe the long-term (1972–2006) population trends of seven heron species in NW Italy, an area holding important European breeding populations of these species. Grey (Ardea cinerea), purple (Ardea purpurea), and squacco (Ardeola ralloides) herons, and little egrets (Egretta garzetta) exhibited a strong logistic increase, leveling off around year 2000 at 3–23 times their initial level. Black-crowned night herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) began by increasing like the former species but then dropped to initial levels. Such trends were found to be influenced by several candidate ecological factors, as assessed by ARIMA models. Specifically, grey herons increased following a decrease in human-induced mortality, as quantified by an index of hunting pressure, and an increase in winter temperatures. Little egrets increased mainly with the increase of the extent of ricefields, whereas squacco herons increased with increasing rainfall in the African wintering range. Black-crowned night herons were also positively affected by increasing African rainfall, but only during 1972–1988, whereas in later years competition with other herons could have affected the species’ decline. The improved protection of colony sites by special reserves was unlikely to be the primary trigger of the observed increase, although obviously important for the long-term population persistence. In conclusion, our study shows that heron populations of southern Europe are sensitive to environmental and climatic changes, as well as to temporal variation in human disturbance and changes in foraging habitats, though the importance of the different factors differs among species.  相似文献

Summary We examined whether individual cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) base their decisions of where to forage, and how long to stay in a patch, on the behavior of other flock members. Cattle egrets commonly forage in flocks associated with cattle and capture prey at higher rates when they do not share a cow with another egret. Foraging egrets provide cues of the location of prey and their success in capturing prey. Therefore, there is the possibility of information transfer between egrets in a flock. We predicted that egrets should only move to occupied patches when the resident was capturing enough prey that it is profitable for the invader to share the patch or take over the patch. However, egrets did not seem to decide where to forage based on neighbors' rates of energy intake, but rather on the presence or absence of conspecifics in a patch. We also predicted that an egret should remain in a patch until its rate of energy intake dropped to or below the average rate for other egrets within the flock. However, egrets that were foraging more efficiently than the average rate for the flock switched patches sooner than less efficient foragers. Egrets did not appear to increase foraging success by gaining information on patch quality from neighbors.  相似文献

The aerial visual field of aquatic animals living near the water surface is distorted by refraction. The imaging of aerial objects by one or two submerged eyes is studied. The aerial binocular image field is determined for pairs of submerged eyes in horizonal and vertical planes. These two image spaces have significantly different structures. Aquatic animals have to correct for refraction, adapting themselves to the former aerial image field in order to recognize aerial predators or to capture such prey. Synopsis The silver arawana, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, hunts along shorelines and within flooded forests in the Amazon River basin and supplements its limited consumption of aquatic vertebrates by leaping from the water to obtain terrestrial and arboreal prey. We offered O. bicirrhosum prey both suspended above and submerged below the surface of the water. From high-speed digital recordings, we measured kinematic variables associated with the jaws, cranium, pectoral fins, and body during orientation and prey capture. Aquatic and aerial feeding events were kinematically distinct, with aerial events generally involving faster, larger movements and a distinct delay in the onset of lower jaw depression until the head had left the water. The comparatively large gape during leaping may facilitate prey capture by overcoming variability in the apparent position of the prey due to refraction, while the delayed onset of mouth opening may serve to reduce the effects of drag. This distinctive leaping behaviour allows exploitation of the terrestrial prey base, especially during seasonal inundation of the Amazon River basin when the aquatic food base is widely dispersed.  相似文献

Nycticorax nycticorax, Ardea cinerea, Egretta garzetta, and Egretta intermedia were naturally infected with Clinostomum complanatum (Trematoda: Clinostomatidae) among fourteen wild herons, seven wild egrets and one wild bittern evaluated at the Veterinary Hospital of Tottori University, Tottori, Japan. 1999年春季,在对无锡鼋头渚鹭鸟种群野外生态调查的基础上,对夜鹭幼鸟反吐物,觅食地底泥和水体进行了采样,并在实验室用气相色谱测定了样品中的α-HCH、β-HCH、γ-HCH、艾氏剂、狄氏剂、异狄氏剂、七氯、环氧七氯、p,p'-DDE、p,p'-DDD、o,p'-DDT和p,p'-DDT等有机氯农药的残留状况,结果表明,在有机氯农药禁用近20年后,六六六的异构体和滴滴涕及其衍生物均能在环境中和夜鹭食物中有不明,在有机氯农药禁用近20年后,六六六的异构体和滴滴涕及其衍生物均能在环境中和夜鹭食物中有不明,在有机氯农药禁用近20年后,六六六的异构体和滴滴涕及其衍生物均能在环境中和夜鹭食物中有不检出,有机氯污染物沿夜鹭食物链产生逐级富集,太湖湿地生态系统中夜鹭卵富集了滴滴涕万倍以上,富集了六六六数千倍,从而使有机氯污染物易被检测,因此夜鹭锘放可作为湿地生态系统有机氯污染的生物指示物。  相似文献

三种重金属元素在鹭卵中富集特征的初步研究   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
2004年4~6月,采集了合肥地区大蜀山、肥西圆通山、肥东太子山集群繁殖的夜鹭、小白鹭、池鹭和牛背鹭鸟卵及组织样品,用原子吸收法测定了卵壳、内容物及组织中Cd、Pb、Cr的残留量.结果表明,4种鹭卵壳、内容物及组织的绝大多数样品中均检出相当高水平的Cd、Pb和Cr残留量,且卵壳和骨骼是重金属富集的主要场所,表明通过卵壳可以排出体内部分重金属污染物.卵壳中重金属显著高于卵内容物,卵壳中重金属残留量为Cr>Pb>Cd,4种鹭卵壳中重金属残留量的种间差异都极其显著,Cr残留水平的种间波动幅度最大,池鹭卵壳中的最高,牛背鹭的最低;Pb的种间波动幅度相对较小,Cd的种间波动幅度最小;而卵内容物中3种重金属残留量的种间差异都不显著,Cr残留量种间波动幅度最大,池鹭卵内容物中,Cr含量最高,牛背鹭卵内容物中没有检出;Pb的种间波动幅度相对较小,Cd的种间波动幅度最小.由于鹭的卵壳取样容易,可用作重金属污染物的指示物,监测和评价湿地生态系统中重金属的污染状况.  相似文献

While large herbivores can have strong impacts on terrestrial ecosystems, much less is known of their role in aquatic systems. We reviewed the literature to determine: 1) which large herbivores (> 10 kg) have a (semi‐)aquatic lifestyle and are important consumers of submerged vascular plants, 2) their impact on submerged plant abundance and species composition, and 3) their ecosystem functions. We grouped herbivores according to diet, habitat selection and movement ecology: 1) Fully aquatic species, either resident or migratory (manatees, dugongs, turtles), 2) Semi‐aquatic species that live both in water and on land, either resident or migratory (swans), 3) Resident semi‐aquatic species that live in water and forage mainly on land (hippopotamuses, beavers, capybara), 4) Resident terrestrial species with relatively large home ranges that frequent aquatic habitats (cervids, water buffalo, lowland tapir). Fully aquatic species and swans have the strongest impact on submerged plant abundance and species composition. They may maintain grazing lawns. Because they sometimes target belowground parts, their activity can result in local collapse of plant beds. Semi‐aquatic species and turtles serve as important aquatic–terrestrial linkages, by transporting nutrients across ecosystem boundaries. Hippopotamuses and beavers are important geomorphological engineers, capable of altering the land and hydrology at landscape scales. Migratory species and terrestrial species with large home ranges are potentially important dispersal vectors of plant propagules and nutrients. Clearly, large aquatic herbivores have strong impacts on associated species and can be critical ecosystem engineers of aquatic systems, with the ability to modify direct and indirect functional pathways in ecosystems. While global populations of large aquatic herbivores are declining, some show remarkable local recoveries with dramatic consequences for the systems they inhabit. A better understanding of these functional roles will help set priorities for the effective management of large aquatic herbivores along with the plant habitats they rely on.  相似文献

Understanding how multiple predators affect one another and their shared prey is an increasingly important goal for ecologists examining predator–prey dynamics and food-web structure. In a field experiment, we examined the outcome of interactions between terrestrial and freshwater predators foraging for the same prey in two temperate North American streams. We used a factorial design to examine the combined foraging effects of herons and smallmouth bass on striped shiners and central stonerollers. We found that there was facilitation between the two predators, resulting in risk-enhancement for the prey species, with particularly pronounced effects on the smallest (<70 mm) size classes. Facilitation is the least well-documented predator–predator interaction and has not been quantitatively demonstrated for freshwater and terrestrial predators. Our results indicate that bass may gain a net benefit from the presence of wading birds such as herons and egrets, and that concerns about the negative effects of birds on fish stocks through competition may be unwarranted.  相似文献

The feeding rates of grouped (<1.5 m from conspecifics) and solo (>5 m from conspecifics) cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) in loose flocks away from cows were compared, to test the hypothesis that grouped cattle egrets benefit from feeding on prey flushed inadvertently by nearby conspecifics. The flock feeding rates were also compared to those of grouped and solo egrets near cows, to determine the effects of flock membership on feeding rates. Birds in flocks captured prey faster than those with cows, and tended to capture larger prey, but field observations and captive experiments failed to show that the feeding success of flock members was enhanced by the hypothesized ‘beater’ effect. Increases in prey density, however, always resulted in higher feeding rates, so some cattle egret groups may form in response to local concentrations of prey. Prey size may also play a role in group formation, because birds in the field tended to feed at greater distances from their neighbours when larger prey were captured, regardless of prey density. When small groups did form among cattle egrets feeding on relatively large prey, group members occasionally captured prey items that had been discovered by nearby conspecifics. This behaviour was not observed among birds in dense aggregations, which fed on small, highly abundant prey. These data indicate that there is a potential cost associated with feeding too near others unless the prey are relatively small and abundant.  相似文献

Summary The degree of association between cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) and cattle was studied during one summer on Saint Catherines Island, Georgia, USA. Previous work by Grubb (1976) and others indicated that cattle egrets foraging with cattle require fewer steps and less time to catch prey than egrets foraging without cattle and single egrets catch prey at a higher rate than egrets foraging in groups of two or more with cattle. Accordingly, we predicted that when given a choice egrets should forage with cattle rather than alone, egrets should prefer to associate with standing rather than sitting cattle, and single egrets associated with cattle should be more common than expected by chance.In excess of two-thirds of the egrets accompanied cattle. Neither time of day nor month influenced the degree of association, but egrets in forest were more likely to be associated with cattle than egrets in pasture. Standing cattle were more likely to be accompanied by egrets than were sitting cattle. Single egrets occurred more frequently than expected by chance when accompanying standing cattle but not when associated with sitting cattle. Thus, cattle egrets usually distributed themselves among cattle in the way predicted by optimal foraging theory.We dedicate this paper to the memory of Michael D. Sabath  相似文献

The Lake Izunuma–Uchinuma was extensively flooded in 1998 and vast areas (approximately 200 ha) of rice fields were submerged for the first time since the land was reclaimed in 1963. When the numbers of birds in 1998 were compared with those in normal years (1995–1997), the numbers of black-crowned night herons (Nycticorax nycticorax L.), cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis L.) and black kites (Milvus migrans Boddaert) increased during the flooding, and the numbers of ducks, especially dabbling ducks (seven species of 11 Anas spp.) were high even after the flooding, while the numbers of the little grebe Tachybaputus ruficollis Pallas were diminished by the flooding.  相似文献

近年来长江口滩涂湿地高强度的促淤围垦对生物多样性保育造成了严重影响。本研究于2006至2010年在南汇东滩进行了水鸟调查,研究围垦后堤内环境的快速演替过程对水鸟的群落结构的影响。通过分析鸻鹬类、雁鸭类和鹭类三类主要水鸟类群,结果表明鸻鹬类的总数呈严重下降趋势(ANOVA, p=0.009),而雁鸭类和鹭类总数在上升(ANOVA,p=0.015;p=0.00);在种类数量方面,鸻鹬类和雁鸭类差异不显著(ANOVA,p=0.597;p=0.523),鹭类种类数变化极显著(ANOVA ,p=0.00)。同时,通过对水鸟的栖息地选择因子偏好的分析, 发现滩涂减少是鸻鹬类减少的主要因素,而大型鱼塘和芦苇增加是雁鸭类和鹭类增加的重要原因。为此我们提出相应海岸带湿地管理建议。  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   The Himalayan Mountains have more specialist river birds than anywhere on earth, but factors permitting their coexistence have not been evaluated. We examined potential ecological segregation of five sympatric insectivores based on diet, morphology, and foraging behavior during the breeding and nonbreeding seasons in central Nepal. Little Forktails ( Enicurus scouleri ) and Brown Dippers ( Cinclus pallasii ) were highly aquatic in habitat use and diet (89–96% of prey of aquatic origin), but took prey that differed in size and composition. Spotted Forktails ( E. maculatus ) foraged primarily along channel margins, and took more aquatic than terrestrial prey (59% vs. 40%). White-capped ( Chaimorrornis leucocephalus ) and Plumbeous ( Rhyacornis fuliginosus ) water redstarts took primarily terrestrial or aerial prey by gleaning marginal surfaces and flycatching over channels. Two species were similar morphologically (Little Forktail and Plumbeous Water Redstart), but had different diets. Our results illustrate clear ecological separation among this guild of co-occurring river birds on one or more niche dimensions that we suggest is mediated by the physical complexity of mountain, riverine habitats.  相似文献

The impact of invasive predators on native prey has attracted considerable scientific attention, whereas the reverse situation (invasive species being eaten by native predators) has been less frequently studied. Such interactions might affect invasion success; an invader that is readily consumed by native species may be less likely to flourish in its new range than one that is ignored by those taxa. Invasive cane toads (Rhinella marina) in Australia have fatally poisoned many native predators (e.g., marsupials, crocodiles, lizards) that attempt to ingest the toxic anurans, but birds are more resistant to toad toxins. We quantified prey preferences of four species of wading birds (Nankeen night heron, purple swamphen, pied heron, little egret) in the wild, by offering cane toads and alternative native prey items (total of 279 trays offered, 14 different combinations of prey types). All bird species tested preferred the native prey, avoiding both tadpole and metamorph cane toads. Avoidance of toads was strong enough to reduce foraging on native prey presented in combination with the toads, suggesting that the presence of cane toads could affect predator foraging tactics, and reduce the intensity of predation on native prey species found in association with toads.  相似文献
