Ecosystems today increasingly suffer invasions by multiple invasive species, some of which may share similar advantageous life history traits and ecological niche. In such cases, direct competition can influence invasion success of both species, and provide insights into competition without co-evolution in species equally novel to the environment. We used two widespread crayfish invaders of freshwater ecosystems of Europe, signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) and spiny cheek crayfish (Orconectes limosus), to investigate how behavioural decisions in agonistic encounters contribute to competitive advantages in the absence of adaptation to either opponents or an environment. In direct competition against novel but comparable opponents, the key factor for establishing clear dominance of P. leniusculus in interspecific bouts was its greater tendency towards continued engagement in high-intensity fights. With O. limosus individuals consistently retreating from staged bouts as fights became more intense, P. leniusculus individuals did not need to adapt their strategy to be successful, suggesting that their agonistic behaviour intrinsically predisposed them to win. While both species are detrimental to invaded ecosystems, our results indicate that aggressive behaviour of P. leniusculus against unfamiliar opponents could allow it to more easily outcompete other comparable species and consequently present a potentially greater threat for native ecosystems.  相似文献

Flexibility (varying from monogamy in South Africa to polygyny in East Africa) has been documented in the mating system of the oribi ( Ourebia ourebi ) by several authors. To investigate this, a population was studied in Northern KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). The adult sex ratio was one male to 1.38 females and the mean group size was 2.1 (n = 13). Although monogamous and polygynous groups occurred in the study population, the polygynous groups were unstable and depended on seasonal food abundance. Comparison of oribi populations across Africa suggests that variation in the mating system is determined mainly by predation risk and altitude (most likely through its effect on graze quality). In areas of high predation risk, oribi can survive only when resource quality permits females to forage in groups, thereby allowing males to be polygynous.  相似文献

Current models explaining the establishment and maintenanceof social monogamy and polygyny within avian populations typicallyassume that the reproductive success of polygynous males exceedsthat of monogamous males. This assumption is almost always supportedwhen the number of fledglings or recruits to future breedingpopulations is used to measure adult reproductive success. However,recent studies using DNA markers indicate that simple countsof fledglings or recruits may be a poor estimator of the numberof nestlings sired by the social father. In this paper, we comparethe number of genetic offspring produced by socially monogamousand polygynous house wren (TrogiodyUs atdon) males in nestsat which they were the social father. Polygynous males did,in fact, sire more nestlings in their own nests than did monogamousmales. Moreover, although we have not identified the sires ofextrapair nestlings, we document that even when all extrapairnestlings in this population are hypotheticaOy assigned to monogamousmales, die total reproductive success of polygynous males exceedsthat of monogamous males. These results and those of severalother recent studies are consistent with the assumption thatpolygynous males produce more offspring than monogamous males.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study was to use highly polymorphic microsatellite loci to estimate individual reproductive success in Atlantic salmon based on the number of surviving juveniles (young of the year) at the population level under natural conditions. We inferred reproductive strategies adopted by both sexes by applying a maximum likelihood method to determine parent-offspring genotype relationships. A high degree of variance in individual reproductive success for both males and females was revealed. The high number of mates used by both sexes is not concordant with previous behavioral studies proposing that females are mainly monogamous in this species. We found little evidence supporting the prediction from previous reports of a positive relationship between individual size and realized reproductive success for either males or females. For both sexes, however, there was a significant correlation between the number of mates and the number of offspring. These results indicate that this species' mating system is more flexible than previously thought and suggest that factors such as potential genetic benefits or environmental uncertainty may also be driving the evolution and the plasticity of mating systems in Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

The mating system of the Virginia opossum, a solitary, nocturnal marsupial, was studied over a period of two years in north–central Florida. There were two mating seasons each year, both lasting about four weeks and starting in mid-January and late April, respectively. Radio-tracking males and females revealed that, independent of body size, males doubled their home ranges during these periods to include an average of 5.9 females within their new ranges. Females were visited regularly and, on the night of oestrus, males directly competed for access to the female. Dominance and hence mating success was strongly related to body mass but not age. Dominant males weighed on average 3.18 kg (N = 20) compared to 2.65 kg of unsuccessful males. The largest of the competing males was successful in 20 of 23 cases involving at least two competitors. Individual male mating success varied from zero to three matings during a breeding season, but the range was probably underestimated. Mate searching activities were costly, as most males lost weight during both mating seasons. Weight changes were a function of body mass, with males over 2.2 kg losing up to 23% in weight and smaller males gaining weight. There was also evidence that male breeding activities entailed a survival cost.  相似文献

1. In most stochastic models addressing the persistence of small populations, environmental noise is included by imposing a synchronized effect of the environment on all individuals. However, buffer mechanisms are likely to exist that may counteract this synchronization to some degree. 2. We have studied whether the flexibility in the mating system, which has been observed in some bird species, is a potential mechanism counteracting the synchronization of environmental fluctuations. Our study organism is the lesser spotted woodpecker Picoides minor (Linnaeus), a generally monogamous species. However, facultative polyandry, where one female mates with two males with separate nests, was observed in years with male-biased sex ratio. 3. We constructed an individual-based model from data and observations of a population in Taunus, Germany. We tested the impact of three behavioural scenarios on population persistence: (1) strict monogamy; (2) polyandry without costs; and (3) polyandry assuming costs in terms of lower survival and reproductive success for secondary males. We assumed that polyandry occurs only in years with male-biased sex ratio and only for females with favourable breeding conditions. 4. Even low rates of polyandry had a strong positive effect on population persistence. The increase of persistence with carrying capacity was slower in the monogamous scenario, indicating strong environmental noise. In the polyandrous scenarios, the increase of persistence was stronger, indicating a buffer mechanism. In the polyandrous scenarios, populations had a higher mean population size, a lower variation in number of individuals, and recovered faster after a population breakdown. Presuming a realistic polyandry rate and costs for polyandry, there was still a strong effect of polyandry on persistence. 5. The results show that polyandry and in general flexibility in mating systems is a buffer mechanism that can significantly reduce the impact of environmental and demographic noise in small populations. Consequently, we suggest that even behaviour that seems to be exceptional should be considered explicitly when predicting the persistence of populations.  相似文献

Males of an undescribed bombyliidfly (Comptosia sp.)occupy traditional territories on a Southeast Queensland hilltop, to which females come solely for the purpose of mating. Territorial fights between males involve aerial collisions during which modified spines on the wing margins produce scars on the bodies of opponents. Territory owners and mating males are not different in size or age from the remainder of the male population. Although residency is related to fighting success, the strength of the effect is ambiguous. Consequently, our data do not appear to fit predictions from game theoretical models for fighting protocol. Hilltop males lacked the extensive population variation typically found in territorial species, and thus, the presumed advantages of traits such as large size may be suppressed. Hilltop males were larger than males at a nonhilltop, resource-based mating site and the possibility of alternative mating tactics is discussed.  相似文献

Multiple matings result in varying paternity share based on mating interval and order. Thus, assessing the effect of mating interval and order on patterns of sperm usage and paternity is crucial. We designed consecutive and delayed double-mating experiments to investigate paternity variation in ladybird, Menochilus sexmaculatus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), using two distinct morphs of the species as phenotypic markers of paternity. The time to commence mating, copulation duration and reproductive output were recorded. The morphs of the offspring from the two setups were taken as a measure of paternity accumulated by the males. The time to commence mating decreased for the second mating in the consecutive mating treatment, while the reverse was observed in the delayed mating treatment. Consecutive double matings reduced the mating duration. Fecundity increased when second mating occurred after a few days, though percent egg viability remained unaffected. The second male accrued higher paternity (P2?=?0.61) than the first male (P1?=?0.39) in the consecutive mating treatment, while in the delayed mating treatment, the overall paternity share of the first 0.49 (P1) and last male was equal 0.51 (P2). Thus, our study revealed that both mating order and the time interval between successive matings regulate the male paternity share. Receptive and virginL. cuprina females were placed with a virgin male and an experienced male that had mated between one and five times previously. The experienced males secured significantly more matings than virgin males. Males with previous matings also gained experience in competing with males. Males directed mating attempts at each other, seemingly in the context of intrasexual competition. Experienced males directed more mating attempts at virgin males than vice versa. As their number of previous matings increased, experienced males made the first mating attempt at females more often and directed more mating attempts at females compared with virgin males. Females did not actively discriminate against experienced males, even though the proportion of matings secured on the first attempt by experienced males declined with increasing mating experience. Understanding the mating system and reproductive success of a species provides evidence for sexual selection. We examined the mating system and the reproductive success of captive adult black sea bream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii), using parentage assignment based on two microsatellites multiplex PCR systems, with 91.5% accuracy in a mixed family (29 sires, 25 dams, and 200 offspring). Based on the parentage result, we found that 93.1% of males and 100% of females participated in reproduction. A total of 79% of males and 92% of females mated with multiple partners (only 1 sire and 1 dam were monogamous), indicating that polygynandry best described the genetic mating system of black sea bream. For males, maximizing the reproductive success by multiple mating was accorded with the sexual selection theory while the material benefits hypothesis may contribute to explain the multiple mating for females. For both sexes, there was a significant correlation between mating success and reproductive success and the variance in reproductive success of males was higher than females. Variation in mating success is the greatest determinant to variation in reproductive success when the relationship is strongly positive. The opportunity for sexual selection of males was twice that of females, as well as the higher slope of the Bateman curve in males suggested that the intensity of intrasexual selection of males was higher than females. Thus, male–male competition would lead to the greater variation of mating success for males, which caused greater variation in reproductive success in males. The effective population number of breeders (Nb) was 33, and the Nb/N ratio was 0.61, slightly higher than the general ratio in polygynandrous fish populations which possibly because most individuals mated and had offspring with a low variance. The relatively high Nb contributes to the maintenance of genetic diversity in farmed black sea bream populations.  相似文献

It is thought that the size and dispersion of habitat patches can determine the size and composition of animal social groups, however, this has rarely been tested. The relationship between group size, the mating system, and habitat patch size in six species of coral-dwelling gobies was examined. For all species, there was a positive correlation between coral colony size and social group size, however the strength of this relationship varied among species. Paragobiodon xanthosomus exhibited the strongest relationship and a manipulative field experiment confirmed that coral colony size limited group size in this species. For other species including Paragobiodon melanosomus and Eviota bifasciata, either a highly conservative mating system (P. melanosomus), or increased mobility (E. bifasciata) appeared to disrupt the relationship between habitat patch size and group size. There was no consistent relationship between the mating system exhibited and group size among the species investigated. These results demonstrate that habitat patch size, mobility, and mating systems can interact in complex ways to structure group size even among closely related species.  相似文献

Green treefrogs, Hyla cinerea, at a study site in eastern Georgia behaved as prolonged breeders: there were many more males present each night than females, the arrival of which was unpredictable. Individual males were usually consistent in their behaviour during a single night, and were most often observed calling. There was a weak, negative correlation between male size (snout-vent length, unless otherwise stated) and the frequency of satellite behaviour, defined as a non-calling male's being situated near a calling male. In 2 of 3 years, the mean size of males observed as satellites was less than that of the calling males with which they were associated on a given night; however, many satellites were the same size or larger than calling males. The distributions of matings per male during three seasons were not significantly different than Poisson distributions with the same means. Individual mating success was best predicted by attendance at the breeding site; mating success was negatively related to the frequency of satellite behaviour in some analyses, but very little of the variance was explained. An exhaustive series of analyses failed to show any pattern of size-dependent mating, including weight-assortative mating, even when males that were frequently satellites were excluded. The relative sizes of males and females in amplexus had little effect on fertilization success. On a seasonal basis, males were clumped in their spatial distribution, and matings tended to occur where male density was highest. Individual males were highly variable in their patterns of movement, which were not correlated with size or mating success. Mating success was also unrelated to the frequency (Hz) of the low-frequency spectral peak in the advertisement call of the male; male size and weight were negatively correlated with the frequency of the low-frequency peak.  相似文献

There is an evident lack of experimental studies dealing with the anthropological determinants of success in judo, especially concerning young athletes. In this paper we have attempted to establish some of the anthropological factors potentially related to judo competition achievement in 15-16 year old athletes. A set of 14 anthropometric and 12 motor-endurance variables was tested on the best young judoists in Croatia (all males, N = 34). All the subjects had competed on the National Championship (NC), and the criterion was defined according to their final NC achievement. Factor analysis and discriminant canonical analysis (DISCRA) were calculated separately on the motor-endurance and anthropometric status variables. DISCRA showed the successful judoists as dominant in strength and endurance status. In contrast, there were no significant differences in the anthropometric dimensions regarding any differentiation between the more and less successful athletes. Possible explanations are discussed.  相似文献

Lifetime mating success of male azure damselflies (Coenagrion puella) was measured in a natural population. The major determinant of mating success is the number of days a male spends at the breeding site, which is mostly determined by a male's adult lifespan. Long-lived males have a higher mating rate than short-lived males, and daily mating rate increases with age up to 6 days, then falls. Large males live longer, but have a lower daily mating rate than small males. These effects of size are very weak, accounting for no more than 2% of the daily variance in mating success. The only overall effect of size on lifetime mating success is that males at both extremes of the size distribution are more likely to fail to mate. Chance differences in the number of females encountered are sufficient to account for the remaining variance in mating success. The weather is also shown to have a major effect on mating success. We draw attention to the ways in which it may be misleading to draw conclusions about the action of sexual selection from studies of daily, rather than lifetime, reproductive success. We provide evidence to support the view that variance in male reproductive success is neither evidence for sexual selection, nor a measure of its intensity.  相似文献

Great-tailed grackles (Quiscalus mexicanus) are sexually dimorphic,dichromatic, colonially nesting blackbirds. In this study, males pursued three basic types of conditional mating strategies,each of which employed a different set of mating tactics. Territorialmales defended one or more trees in which several females nested.They achieved reproductive success by siring the offspringof their social mates and through extrapair fertilization.Resident males lived in the colony but did not defend territoriesor have social mates. Transient males passed through the colony, staying no more than a few days, and probably visited more thanone colony. Residents appeared to queue for access to territories,but transients did not. Residents and transients gained allpaternity through extrapair fertilizations and provided noparental care. Territorial males sired the majority of offspring,but residents and transients also sired small numbers of nestlings. Territorial males were larger and had longer tails than nonterritorialmales. The number of social mates was related to body size,and males that sired nestlings were heavier and had longertails than males with no genetic reproductive success. Malesthat gained paternity through extrapair fertilization wereheavier and had longer tails than males that did not. The matingsystem of great-tailed grackles can best be categorized as "non-faithful-female frank polygyny."  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that high social status leads to high levels of copulatory behaviour and increased number of offspring in hamsters. When paired with albino female golden hamsters, males of three genotypic strains showed differences in the frequency and temporal patterning of some measures of copulatory behaviour but did not differ in general fertilization success. The results of two-male, one-female tests in which mating order and ejaculation frequencies were controlled indicated only relatively small differences in differential fertilizing capacity among these genotypes. Males of the genotypic strains displayed an equal probability of achieving alpha status in three-male, one-female competitive mating tests in which animals were habituated to semi-natural enclosures. Alpha males often slept in the female's nest box the night before she became receptive, were the first to mate on the following morning, achieved higher scores for all measures of sexual behaviour including ejaculation frequency and subsequently sired more young than did lower ranking males. However, the differential reproductive success of alpha males was not simply a function of higher ejaculation scores since they obtained more than twice as many young per ejaculation as subordinate males. Alpha males continued to copulate with long intromissions after exhausting their supply of ejaculates. Although females mated with several males, mating preferences were evidenced by their flank-gland and vaginal marking patterns on the day before receptivity and in their initial choice of mates during tethered male tests. The behaviour of alpha males is consistent with previous findings regarding the effects of mating order and prolonged copulation on sperm competition and suggests that sperm utilization patterns and mating tactics have coevolved.  相似文献
