The concept behind the first Molecular Approaches to Malaria meeting, held 1-5 February 2000 in Lorne, Australia, was ahead of its time; to convene a meeting of malaria researchers, database developers and genomics scientists, and to discuss how genomic sciences and their relevant disciplines could be applied to solve important problems in malaria research. The success of the second Molecular Approaches to Malaria meeting, held 1-5 February 2004 in the same place, together with the influence of genomics on malaria research, is testament to the vision that the organizers had at the first meeting. This review attempts to capture some of the current efforts in the post-genomics era of malaria research and highlights the approaches discussed at the Molecular Approaches to Malaria 2004 meeting.  相似文献

The first international Ustilago conference was held in Marburg, Germany from August 22 to 25, 2002. The meeting focused on molecular genetic and cell biology research with Ustilago maydis, the causative agent of common smut of maize. This fungus has emerged as a useful experimental organism for studying the biology of basidiomycete fungi, with a particular emphasis on the interaction of the fungus with the host plant. Thus presentations at the meeting covered the range of current research topics including DNA recombination and repair, mating and sexual development, phytopathology, cell biology, the cell cycle, signaling, and genomics. The meeting also highlighted historical aspects of U. maydis research with presentations by pioneers in the field including Robin Holiday (recombination), Yigal Koltin (killer phenomenon) and Peter Day (plant pathology).  相似文献

The IX International Aromatase Conference focused upon key developments in research related to the aromatase enzyme that had occurred since the last meeting. A session took place at the conclusion of conference discussing key areas for future research and issues currently facing researchers in the field. While significant progress on understanding structural elements of the enzyme and regulatory mechanisms of both the gene and protein provides an excellent basis for development of improved aromatase inhibitors and exploration of the important problem of aromatase inhibitor resistance, significant challenges remain. Increasing the speed with which findings are translated into clinical practice and finding an appropriate balance between basic and translational research were identified as areas which require further attention before the next meeting in 2010.  相似文献

We have entered a new era in biomedical research in which large interdisciplinary teams are being established to answer important scientific questions. Scientists of multidisciplinary backgrounds within universities are combining forces and inter-institutional consortia that include alliances between academia and industry are springing up around the country to generate breakthrough advances. A number of driving forces are at work to establish these collaborative research approaches. By contrast, there also are barriers to be surmounted by institutions with silo mentalities for effective partnerships to be established. In order for this new era of research to reach maximal effectiveness, new approaches to education of the young and retraining of established administrators and scientists must take place. These issues were explored thoroughly at the 2006 annual meeting of the Association of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Neurobiology Chairpersons (AACBNC) that was held in Aruba from January 18 to 21. The theme of this historic meeting was the Future of Interdisciplinary Research and Training: Breaking Down the Barriers. In this introductory article, we discuss the formation of a trendsetting Institute of Biomedical Sciences and Technology, the concept of the AACBNC meeting, and the influence of the Institute on the content of the meeting. The proceedings of this meeting, including Nobel Laureate Papers and Nobel Round-Table Discussions on the future of interdisciplinary research and training, are contained in this special issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine, a journal dedicated to the publication of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research in the biomedical sciences.  相似文献

This special issue of Trends in Parasitology comprises a collection of timely reviews arising from the 2nd Molecular Approaches to Malaria meeting held 1-5 February 2004 in Lorne, Australia, four years after the successful inaugural meeting. As the name suggests, Molecular Approaches to Malaria focused on the latest molecular developments in malaria research, and their biological and clinical implications. By no means is this special issue intended to represent a comprehensive recapitulation of all of the presentations at the meeting. Rather, the articles address, in more general terms, recent advances on broader themes that were prominent at Molecular Approaches to Malaria meeting 2004.  相似文献

The fourth annual meeting of the Complex Trait Consortium (CTC) was held in Groningen, the Netherlands on June 26–29, 2005. This meeting, which set a new attendance record, followed three previous and highly successful meetings. The focus at this meeting was on continued resource development and the exiting new field of systems genetics, the integration and anchoring of multi-dimensional data-types to underlying genetic variation. A new aspect at the meeting was the three-minute, ‘come see my poster’ presentations that generated significant interaction at the poster sessions. If the 2005 meeting is an indicator of things to come, future meetings promise to offer even more exciting research efforts to integrate high-throughput biological measurements with genetic variation to unravel the mechanisms responsible for inter-individual variation.  相似文献

Cardiac mechano-electric feedback: past,present, and prospect   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Mechanical effects on heart rhythm have been known to the clinical community for well over a century, and documented cases include both arrhythmogenic and pro-rhythmic consequences of mechanical stimulation. The intracardiac pathway that leads from changes in the cardiac mechanical environment to altered electrical activity is referred to as mechano-electric feedback (MEF). Fundamental research into the mechanisms underlying cardiac MEF is ‘engineering-intensive’, and much of the current insight would have been impossible without the introduction of novel techniques for the study of isolated cardiac cells.

Clinical and basic research into MEF have developed over different time scales, often uninformed of each other, and utilizing disparate concepts and terminology. Bridging the gap between the two domains is not straightforward, as physicians and scientists tend to publish in different journals and attend different meetings. There is, however, a growing interest in ‘re-uniting’ the clinic and basic MEF research, as witnessed by an increasing number of dedicated journal issues and international meetings, including events hosted by major European and American professional organisations such as the ESC and NASPE. Last year alone saw an international workshop on Cardiac MEF & Arrhythmias at Oxford, as well as dedicated sessions at NASPE's 23rd annual meeting in San Diego, CardioStim 2002 in Nice, and the UK Physiological Society meeting in Leeds.

This volume of Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology incorporates clinical and basic science results, and it is fitting that its publication coincides with a special session on cardiac MEF at the 2003 meeting of NASPE.  相似文献

The first junior European Calcium Society online meeting, held October 20–21, 2020, aimed to promote junior researchers in the Ca2+ community. The meeting included four scientific sessions, covering Ca2+ research from molecular detail to whole organisms. Each session featured one invited speaker and three speakers selected based on submitted abstracts, with the overall aim of actively involving early-career researchers. Consequently, the meeting underlined the diversity of Ca2+ physiology, by showcasing research across scales and Kingdoms, as presented by a correspondingly diverse speaker panel across career stages and countries. In this meeting report, we introduce the visions of the junior European Calcium Society board and summarize the meeting content.  相似文献

The PVC superphylum is a phylogenetically supported collection of various related bacterial phyla that comprise unusual characteristics and traits. The ‘PVC’ abbreviation derives from Planctomycetes, Verrucomicrobia and Chlamydiae as members of this superphylum, while additional bacterial phyla are related. There has recently been increasing and exciting interest in the cell biology, physiology and ecology of members of this superphylum, including evolutionary implications of the complex cell organization of some species. It is timely that international researchers in the PVC superphylum field met to discuss these developments. The first meeting entirely dedicated to those bacteria, the EMBO workshop “PVC superphylum: Exceptions to the bacterial definition” was held at the Heidelberg University to catalyze the formation of a vital scientific community supporting PVC-bacterial research. More than 45 investigators from more than 20 countries (PIs, senior scientists and students) attended the meeting and produced a great starting point for future collaborative research. This Special Issue will focus on the EMBO-PVC meeting. This Perspective briefly summarizes the history of PVC-research, focusing on the key findings and provides a brief summary of the meeting with a focus on the major questions that arose during discussion and that might influence the research in the years to come.  相似文献

During the past few decades radiation research has developed into specialized sub-disciplines, ranging from basic physics and chemistry to tumor biology and experimental radiotherapy. Scientific issues as well as the techniques and methodologies applied are subject to diverging discussion. The annual scientific meetings of the German ”Gesellschaft für Biologische Strahlenfor-schung (GBS)” were established with the primary aim of allowing up-to-date transfer of current knowledge in any of the topics in radiation research and of promoting interaction between different research groups. This report provides a summary of the presentations at the third annual meeting which took place in 1999 in Dresden, Germany. The meeting particularly focussed on frontline research in radiation chemistry, modeling of radiation effects, dosimetry of non-ionizing radiation and unconventional radiation qualities, e.g., heavy ions or soft x-rays, stochastic radiation effects, DNA repair, and various aspects of radiobiological research of cells, normal tissues and tumors. A meeting was held at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) in Hinxton, United Kingdom to discuss recent progress in the development of EMD, a database for maps determined by electron microscopy that is now integrated with MSD, the macromolecular structure database at EBI. This meeting of representatives of many of the major image processing groups in electron microscopy also discussed possible software developments that would ease the documentation and deposition of such datasets. The meeting concluded with a strong endorsement of map deposition in electron microscopy and its linkage with the family of archival databases in biomedical research.  相似文献

Following the publication of their joint proposal for a National Centre for the Replacement of Animals in Experiments in 2002, the Dr Hadwen Trust and the Lord Dowding Fund organised a meeting, held on 18 November 2003 at Portcullis House, Westminster, in London, in order to discuss the concept further. A one-page summary of their proposal is attached as an appendix, and full copies are available from the Lord Dowding Fund and the Dr Hadwen Trust. The meeting aimed to discuss the need to stimulate and promote research to replace animal experiments by means of a National Centre (a coordinating body), and how this should be established and funded. Participants, numbering about 80 in total, included politicians (national and European), government officials, scientists, funding bodies and animal welfare representatives. This report is a summary of the issues raised by speakers and other participants at the meeting.  相似文献
