Daily changes in cognitive performance have been documented, both in time of day/effect paradigm studies and in time‐isolation studies. However, in both types of studies, phenomena such as the “post‐lunch dip” have been found that were difficult to explain in terms of theoretical backgrounds. These phenomena may suggest ultradian rhythms in cognitive performance. A number of studies have also shown ultradian and asymmetric rhythms in activity indices of the brain hemispheres. The aim of this study was to test three hypotheses: the first two assumed that there is a significant ultradian frequency in a component of the endogenous rhythm of processing speed, and the third assumed that the ultradian endogenous rhythms of the processing speed (encoding and recognition) of stimuli addressed to the left brain hemisphere differ in period length from those addressed to right hemisphere. During a 24 h constant‐routine experiment, the memory performance of 30 participants was measured eight times (every 2.5–3 h), starting at 06:30 h. Parallel sets of words and pictures were shown to subjects in a random order in either the left or the right visual field on a computer screen. The participants pressed one of two buttons in response to the picture or word, or when answering a question concerning the meaning of a presented stimulus. Cosinor analysis was applied to individual time series data. Two significant ultradian components were found in a majority of the time series. Dominant periods were analyzed using three factor ANOVA. The results showed an asymmetry between both hemispheres in the frequency of ultradian rhythms in encoding speed.  相似文献

Microalgae have significant potential to be an important alternative energy source, but the challenges to the commercialization of bio‐oil from microalgae need to be overcome for the potential to be realized. The application of stress can be used to improve bio‐oil yields from algae. Nevertheless, the understanding of stress effects is fragmented due to the lack of a suitable, direct quantitative marker for stress. The lack of understanding seems to have limited the development of stress based strategies to improve bio‐oil yields, and hence the commercialization of microalgae‐based bio‐oil. In this study, we have proposed and used the specific intracellular reactive species levels (siROS) particularly hydroxyl and superoxide radical levels, separately, as direct, quantitative, markers for stress, irrespective of the type of stress induced. Although ROS reactions are extremely rapid, the siROS level can be assumed to be at pseudo‐steady state compared to the time scales of metabolism, growth and production, and hence they can be effective stress markers at particular time points. Also, the specific intracellular (si‐) hydroxyl and superoxide radical levels are easy to measure through fluorimetry. Interestingly, irrespective of the conditions employed in this study, that is, nutrient excess/limitation or different light wavelengths, the cell concentrations are correlated to the siROS levels in an inverse power law fashion. The composite plots of cell concentration (y) and siROS (x) yielded the correlations of y = k1 · x?0.7 and y = k2 · x?0.79, for si‐hydroxyl and si‐superoxide radical levels, respectively. The specific intracellular (si‐) neutral lipid levels, which determine the bio‐oil productivity, are related in a direct power law fashion to the specific hydroxyl radical levels. The composite plot of si‐neutral lipid levels (z) and si‐hydroxyl radical level (x) yielded a correlation of z = k3 · x0.65. More interestingly, a nutrient shift caused a significant change in the sensitivity of neutral lipid accumulation to the si‐hydroxyl radical levels. Biotechnol. Abstract

Rats exhibit ultradian as well as circadian rhythms in activity. Short‐term activity rhythms appear to result from bouts of feeding‐related behavior interspersed with periods of quiescence. We examined the relationship of activity to feeding in 12 male Long‐Evans derived rats during ad lib and restricted feeding (RF) conditions to determine the effect of RF on both circadian and ultradian activity rhythms. By the end of 20 days of RF all animals exhibited an ultradian periodicity of approximately 12 hours. A twenty‐four hour rhythm in feeding persisted, apparently due to the rats adapting to the diurnal feeding period. General findings were that RF resulted in anticipatory activity prior to feeding and that short‐term activity fluctuations and investigations of the food bin continued during RF even though overall nocturnal activity decreased. The results suggest that male rats of this strain exhibit ultradian activity rhythms that appear to be strongly related to feeding.  相似文献

The early development of sleep-wake and food-intake rhythms in human infants is reviewed. The development of a 24h day-night rhythm contains two observable developmental processes: the alterations in the periodic structure of behavior (decreased ultradian, increased circadian components) and the process of synchronization to external time (entrainment). The authors present the results of their studies involving 26 German children and compare them with previous investigations. In their research, it became evident that, during the first weeks of life, the time pattern of sleep-wake and food-intake behavior is characterized by different ultradian periodicities, ranging from 2h to 8h. In the course of further ontogenesis, the share of ultradian rhythms in the sleep-wake behavior decreases, while it remains dominant for food-intake behavior. The circadian component is established as early as the first weeks of life and increases in the months that follow. Besides, the authors' study supports the notion of broad interindividual variation in ultradian rhythms and in the development of a day-night rhythm. Examples of free-running rhythms of sleep-wake and food-intake behavior by various authors are strong indicators of the endogenous nature of the circadian rhythms in infants and show that the internal clock is already functioning at birth. It is still uncertain when the process of synchronization to external and social time cues begins and how differences in the maturation of perceptive organs affect the importance of time cues for the entrainment. Prepartally, the physiological maternal entrainment factors and mother-fetus interactions may be most important; during the first weeks of life, the social time cues gain importance, while light acts as a dominant “zeitgeber” at a later time only.  相似文献

Development involves interactions between genetic and environmental influences. Vertebrate mothers are generally the first individuals to encounter and interact with young animals. Thus, their role is primordial during ontogeny. The present study evaluated non‐genomic effects of mothers on the development of rhythms of precocial Japanese quail (Coturnix c. japonica). First, we investigated the influence of mothering on the ontogeny of endogenous rhythms of young. We compared circadian and ultradian rhythms of feeding activity of quail reared with or without adoptive mothers. More brooded than non‐brooded quail presented a circadian and/or an ultradian rhythm. Thus, the presence of the mother during the normal brooding period favors, in the long term, expression of rhythms in the young. Second, we investigated the influence of rhythmic phenotype of the mother on the development of endogenous rhythms of young by comparing quail brooded by circadian‐rhythmic adoptive mothers (R) to quail brooded by circadian‐arrhythmic adoptive mothers (A). More R‐brooded than A‐brooded quail expressed circadian rhythmicity, and circadian rhythm clarities were greater in R‐brooded than A‐brooded quail. Ultradian rhythmicity did not differ between R‐ and A‐brooded quail, nor between R and A adoptive mothers. Thus, the rhythmic phenotypes of quail mothers influence the rhythmic phenotypes of their young. Our results demonstrate that mothers of precocial birds influence epigenetically the ontogeny of endogenous rhythms of the young they raise.  相似文献

Spontaneous activity and the body temperature of laboratory mice were recorded telemetrically using implantable transmitters. Following ten control days (L : D = 12 : 12; light from 07:00 to 19:00), the LD cycle was phase-advanced by shortening the light time by 8 h. Recordings were continued for a further 3 weeks. The raw temperature data were unmasked or 'purified' — that is, the temperature changes due to locomotor activity were removed, so revealing the endogenous component of the rhythm — using a regression method previously developed by us. The circadian rhythms of activity and measured body temperature resynchronized on average after 8 days. During resynchronization, both rhythms tended to show two components, one adjusting by a phase advance and the other by a phase delay. However, after purification of the body temperature rhythm, only the advancing component remained. These results indicate that the delaying component of the measured temperature rhythm was caused by masking due to activity, and that the endogenous component of this rhythm did not divide into two components during the resynchronization process. Also, the endogenous component of the circadian rhythm of body temperature and one component of the activity rhythm seemed to be controlled by the same oscillator. It remains uncertain how the other component of the activity rhythm is regulated.  相似文献

Oxalis regnellii Mig. is a trifoliate plant, and the three leaflets usually show synchronized up and down movements with a circadian period of 26–27 h. The three leaflets can also perform desynchronized ultradian oscillations, and we report on such rhythms under different conditions. A study of the occurrence of ultradian leaf movement rhythms as a function of irradiance is presented. At an irradiance of approximately 1 μW cm−2, the occurrence was maximal and ca 30%. The periods varied from 5 to 15 h. Four other cases of ultradian rhythms in different conditions are also presented. In one case spontaneous ultradian rhythms occurred, and in another, two of the leaflets showed ultradian rhythms when the third leaflet had received a light pulse. In two more cases, the three leaflets on a leaf were separated by physical cuts along the petiole between the pulvini; in both cases the period was approximately 5 h. Possible mechanisms to explain the ultradian rhythms in Oxalis regnelli are discussed.  相似文献

Microcystis aeruginosa is one of the most common blue-green algae species that forms harmful water bloom, which frequently causes serious ecological pollution and poses a health hazard to animals and humans. To understand the progression of algal blooms and to provide a theoretical basis for predicting and preventing the occurrence of algal blooms and reducing the harm of algal bloom to environment, we investigated the diurnal variation of photosynthesis, ATP content and cell division in M. aeruginosa PCC7820. The results showed that the photosynthesis and ATP content of M. aeruginosa PCC7820 exhibited clear circadian rhythm with a period of approximately 24 h and that the periodic rhythms continued for at least three cycles under continuous light conditions. Furthermore, the period length showed that a temperature compensation effect and changes in light cycle or temperature could reset the phase of circadian rhythm. These results indicate that the circadian rhythms of physiological process in M. aeruginosa PCC7820 are controlled by the endogenous circadian clock. Examinations of the number, size and cytokinin content of cells also reveal that the cell division of M. aeruginosa PCC7820 with the generation time of 38.4 h exhibits robust circadian rhythms with a period close to 24 h. The circadian rhythms of cell division may be generated by a biological clock through regulation of the cell division phase of M. aeruginosa PCC7820 via a gating mechanism. The phases in which cell division slows or stop recur with a circadian periodicity of about 24 h.  相似文献

The purpose of this experiment was to study the possible role of the gastric antrum and small bowel in the rhythm(s) of plasma gastrin. The cat was used as the laboratory animal. Three groups of cats were provided with a gastric fistula for the study of gastric acid and plasma gastrin rhythms. The first group (N = 7) served as controls. A second group (N = 3) was antrectomized and later subjected to a 80% small bowel resection. Gastric acid secretions were collected every 30 min from 0800 to 2400. Blood samples for determination of gastrin were drawn every 2 hr from 0800 to 2400. In control animals a circadian (i.e. approximately 24 hr) and 3 ultradian (i.e. less than 24 hr) rhythms were detected for acid output. In the antrectomized cats, circadian and ultradian rhythms were documented. After small bowel resection circadian and ultradian rhythms in gastric acid secretion were observed. For plasma gastrin, circadian and ultradian rhythms were found in the control cats. In the antrectomized cats no rhythms were observed. After small bowel resection an ultradian rhythm reappeared in these antrectomized cats. Removal of the antrum in the cat induces disappearance of circadian and ultradian rhythms of plasma gastrin but fails to modify the acid rhythms. Small bowel resection results in the reappearance of an ultradian rhythm for plasma gastrin and a shift in acrophase for the circadian rhythm in acid secretion.  相似文献

Analysis of changes in the plasma levels of GTH II over a 24-h day/night cycle revealed statistically significant circadian or ultradian variation or both in its circulating level during the gonadally active months of the reproductive cycle. The 24-h average and amplitude of circadian or ultradian rhythm in GTH II increased with the advancement of ovarian development and maturation. In April, a single peak in GTH II level was noticed in the night at 20.6 h. In contrast, in May, June and July a biphasic pattern (ultradian rhythm) was noticed with two characteristic peaks, one in the photophase and the other in the scotophase. In addition, in May a statistically significant circadian rhythm in plasma GTH II was validated with a peak located at 20.1 h. These rhythms seem to have physiological significance. The ultradian rhythm with two peaks during the reproductively active phase appears to provide a suitable physiological milieu for the temporally different yet synchronous population of oocytes for the secretion of steroids. Thus, the observed temporal organization in GTH II may have physiological consequences leading to accomplishment of reproductive process at appropriate time of the year.  相似文献

A diverse range of organisms shows physiological and behavioural rhythms with various periods. Extensive studies have been performed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of circadian rhythms with an approximately 24 h period in both Drosophila and mammals, while less attention has been paid to ultradian rhythms with shorter periods. We used a video-tracking method to monitor the movement of single flies, and clear ultradian rhythms were detected in the locomotor behaviour of wild type and clock mutant flies kept under constant dark conditions. In particular, the Pigment-dispersing factor mutant (Pdf 01 ) demonstrated a precise and robust ultradian rhythmicity, which was not temperature compensated. Our results suggest that Drosophila has an endogenous ultradian oscillator that is masked by circadian rhythmic behaviours.  相似文献

This paper presents evidence for the existence of both a circadian and an ultradian rhythm in the elongation growth of rice roots. Root elongation of rice (Oryza sativa) was recorded under dim green light by using a CCD camera connected to a computer. Four treatment conditions were set-up to investigate the existence of endogenous rhythms: 28 °C constant temperature and continuous dark (28 DD); 28 °C constant temperature and alternating light and dark (28 LD); 33 °C constant temperature and continuous dark (33 DD); and diurnal temperature change and alternating light and dark (DT-LD). The resulting spectral densities suggested the existence of periodicities of 20.4-25.2 h (circadian cycles) and 2.0-6.0 h (ultradian cycles) in each of the 4 treatments. The shorter ultradian cycles can be attributed to circumnutational growth of roots and/or to mucilage exudation. The average values across all the replicate data showed that the highest power spectral densities (PSDs) corresponded to root growth rhythms with periods of 22.9, 23.7, and 2.1 h for the 28 DD, 28 LD, and 33 DD treatments, respectively. Accumulation of PSD for each data set indicated that the periodicity was similar in both the 28 DD and 33 DD treatments. We conclude that a 23-h circadian and a 2-h ultradian rhythmicity exist in rice root elongation. Moreover, root elongation rates during the day were 1.08 and 1.44 times faster than those during the night for the 28 LD and DT-LD treatments, respectively.  相似文献

To investigate whether depression is accompanied by changes in diurnal rhythms of free estradiol and cortisol in different phases of the menstrual cycle, we measured these two hormone levels in saliva samples collected every 2 h for 24 h from 15 healthy normally cycling women and 12 age-matched normally cycling women suffering from major depression taking antidepressants. The assessments were repeated four times over one menstrual cycle: during menstruation and in the late follicular/peri-ovulating, early to mid-luteal and late luteal phases, respectively. Quantification with a nonlinear periodic regression model revealed distinct diurnal rhythms in free estradiol and free cortisol in all subjects. For the diurnal cortisol rhythm, significant differences were found in the peak-width and ultradian amplitude among different menstrual phases, both in controls and depressed patients, while no significant differences were found between the two groups. The diurnal estradiol rhythm, on the other hand, was quite consistent among different menstrual phases within both groups, while the depressed patients had overall larger amplitudes than controls, which is negatively correlated with disease duration. Significant positive correlations between the two hormone rhythms were found for 24-h mean level (mesor), peak, and trough in late luteal phase, and for ultradian harmonics in early to mid-luteal phase in controls, but only for ultradian harmonics in late follicular/peri-ovulating phase and for acrophase in the menstruation phase in depressed patients. A sub-analysis was also performed in patients who received Fluoxetine (n = 7). The findings implicate a close correlation between the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, both of which may be involved in depression.  相似文献

Abstract

Pupal eclosion of Trichogramma evanescens Westw. was studied in different conditions of light‐darkness and temperature fluctuations. The results revealed that under natural light cycles Trichogramma exhibits a distinct rhythm of emergence from pupae. Maximum emergence takes place in the morning. This rhythm persists in constant dim red light and temperature, so it is endogenous in nature. The rhythm can be entrained by artificial 24‐h temperature cycles or by day‐night cycles of light with a very low intensity of illumination (<0.01 lux). Nevertheless a single pulse of bright light or of high temperature is not able to reset the rhythm. The emergence rhythm was also absent if the culture was grown in constant darkness and temperature.  相似文献

Automated monitoring of circadian rhythms is an efficient way of gaining insight into oscillation parameters like period and phase for the underlying pacemaker of the circadian clock. Measurement of the circadian rhythm of phototaxis (swimming towards light) exhibited by the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii has been automated by directing a narrow and dim light beam through a culture at regular intervals and determining the decrease in light transmittance due to the accumulation of cells in the beam. In this study, the monitoring process was optimized by constructing a new computer-controlled measuring machine that limits the test beam to wavelengths reported to be specific for phototaxis and by choosing an algal strain, which does not need background illumination between test light cycles for proper expression of the rhythm. As a result, period and phase of the rhythm are now unaffected by the time a culture is placed into the machine. Analysis of the rhythm data was also optimized through a new algorithm, whose robustness was demonstrated using virtual rhythms with various noises. The algorithm differs in particular from other reported algorithms by maximizing the fit of the data to a sinusoidal curve that dampens exponentially. The algorithm was also used to confirm the reproducibility of rhythm monitoring by the machine. Machine and algorithm can now be used for a multitude of circadian clock studies that require unambiguous period and phase determinations such as light pulse experiments to identify the photoreceptor(s) that reset the circadian clock in C. reinhardtii.  相似文献

The function of ultradian rhythms is not yet clearly elucidated. In particular, short-term rhythms are expressed during early ontogeny, especially in broods of precocial birds. We investigated the relationship between the clarity of the ultradian rhythm of the activity/rest cycle of a group of young Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) and the level of social synchronisation and spatial cohesion between the birds within that group. The subjects were descended from two lines selected for either very pronounced rhythmic or arrhythmic circadian activity. We found a positive relationship between the clarity of the ultradian rhythm of the activity/rest cycle when birds were young and the clarity of the circadian rhythm of feeding activity when birds were older, but still immature. The temporal organisation of the behaviour of the chicks from these two lines was observed in outdoor aviaries, when they were 4, 8, 12 and 15 days old. The mean ultradian period expressed by groups of 12 chicks was variable, with a minimum of 6 minutes. The ultradian period lengthened regularly as chicks grew older, and reached approximately 40 min on day 15. The clarity of the ultradian rhythmicity of group activity was linked to the level of inter-individual social synchronisation and of spatial cohesion; the more pronounced the ultradian rhythms of a group, the greater the temporal and spatial cohesion of the chicks within the group. Moreover, these characteristics varied with the age of the chicks. Finally, chicks in the less rhythmic groups weighed less. These results stress the adaptive value of this temporal organisation strategy under natural conditions.  相似文献

Eleven healthy, full-term babies were studied on the second day after birth and again 4 weeks later. The babies lived on a 24-h light/dark cycle (light from 0700D1900) and were bottle-fed every 4 h. Systolic blood pressure, heart rate, skin (abdomen) and rectal temperatures were measured at 10-min intervals for 24 h on each occasion of study. The behavioural state of the baby was measured at the same time, and this information was used to purify the raw data (i.e., to separate it into the endogenous, clock-driven and exogenous, lifestyle-driven components). Raw and purified data were assessed for 24-h and ultradian (12-, 8-, 6-, 4-, 3-, 2-h) periodicities by cosinor analysis. We confirm the development of 24-h rhythmicity in skin and rectal temperatures between day 2 and week 4; at the same time, ultradian rhythms (4-h) developed in all variables. For heart rate and systolic blood pressure the development of a 4-h ultradian rhythm was in phase with the behavioural changes produced by feeding; by contrast, for the temperatures, these weak exogenous components were accompanied by a stronger 4-h component, that was out of phase with feeding. Masking effects due to sleep and activity changed in size between day 2 and week 4. Also, those positive masks produced by waking activities were more marked in the light, whereas the negative masks produced by sleep were more marked in the dark. Some implications of these results for the development of rhythmicity in infants, particularly whether due to lifestyle or the development of internal processes, are discussed.  相似文献
