Increased biological diversity due to invasion by non-indigenous species (NIS) is a global phenomenon with potential effects on trophic interactions and ecosystem processes in the invaded habitat. We assessed the effects of resource availability and invasion of three non-indigenous invertebrate grazers (two crustaceans and a snail) on secondary production, relative dominance of NIS grazers and resource depletion in experimental freshwater mesocosms. The relative dominance of NIS grazers increased with increasing initial resource availability, although the effect was largest for one of the three species. The effect was due to the fact that all the included non-indigenous grazers were able to expand their populations quickly in response to resource addition. For the most dominating species, the increased grazer diversity due to invasion in turn resulted in higher production of grazer biomass and a more efficient depletion of the periphyton resource. The effect was largest at high initial resource availability, where NIS dominance was most pronounced. Our results show that an invasion-induced increase in species diversity can increase resource depletion and consequently production, but that the effect depends on identity of the introduced species. The results also suggest that properties of the recipient system, such as resource availability, can modulate ecosystem effects of NIS by affecting invader success and dominance.  相似文献

Diversity and dominance in planktonic rotifers   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Green  J. 《Hydrobiologia》1993,(1):345-352
The diversity of planktonic species in a body of water can be estimated in two ways: momentary diversity and long term diversity. The former represents the number capable of coexisting at any one time, and the latter includes a seasonal or other temporal component. The relationship between the two varies mainly with salinity. Dominance is generally inversely related to diversity. In considering the total possible range of dominance for a given number of species the mean values are surprisingly restricted. An abnormally high dominance for a number of species can be an indication of pollution or some other form of environmental stress.  相似文献

Influential research in terrestrial habitats indicates that several ecosystem processes are related to plant biodiversity, yet these links remain poorly studied in marine ecosystems. We conducted one field and one mesocosm experiment to quantify the relative effects of macroalgal species identity and richness on primary production in coral reef macroalgal communities off the north coast of Jamaica. We measured production as the net accumulation of algal biomass in the absence of consumers and as photosynthetic rate using oxygen probes in sealed aquaria. We used two recently developed techniques to attribute deviations in expected relative yield to components associated with species identity or diversity and then to further partition diversity effects into mechanistic components based on dominance, trait-dependent complementarity, and trait-independent complementarity. Our results indicate that algal identity had far greater effects on absolute net growth and photosynthesis than richness. The most diverse mixture of macroalgae did not outperform the most productive monoculture or the average monoculture in either measure of primary production (i.e. we did not find evidence of either transgressive or non-transgressive overyielding). Trait-independent complementarity effects were positive but dominance and trait-dependent complementarity were both negative and became stronger when richness was increased. Thus the potentially positive influence of species interactions and niche partitioning on production were negated by dominance and other negative selection effects. These results demonstrate that the counteracting influence of component effects can diminish the net richness effects on production. This could explain frequently observed weak net richness effects in other aquatic and terrestrial systems and suggests that life history tradeoffs greatly reduce the potential for ecologically relevant plant biodiversity effects on ecosystem properties.  相似文献

Seventy-two core tops and grab samples from the western North Atlantic were analyzed to determine what aspects of planktonic foraminiferal abundance and diversity are most closely related to ocean circulation. Some species appear to be reliable indicators of the Gulf Stream, a warm surface current. Both Globorotalia menardii and Globigerinoides sacculifer have their highest abundances under the main trend of the Gulf Stream. Globorotalia inflata reaches high abundances in the cold slope water north of the Gulf Stream but its distribution is not as continuous as the Gulf Stream indicators.Contoured values of species diversity, the Shannon diversity index, and species equitability also reflect surface circulation. A plot of species diversity (number of species) shows a poorly defined region of high diversity beneath the major trend of the Gulf Stream. Use of the Shannon diversity index enhances and clarifies this region of high diversity. A map of species equitability shows a broad belt of low species dominance (high equitability) beneath the Gulf Stream. North of the Gulf Stream, a tongue of high dominance (low equitability) corresponds to the increased relative abundance of Globorotalia inflata.High diversity of planktonic foraminifera in bottom sediments characterizes the warm shifting surface currents of the Gulf Stream; low diversity is typical of slope and Sargasso Sea waters. Low equitability (high species dominance) indicates either cold currents or gyre center waters. Maps of foraminiferal diversity and equitability for other intervals of geologic time may be useful in tracing the evolution of ocean circulation.  相似文献

According to the analysis of the community diversity, the communities that have the highest values of richness, diversity, maximum diversity, evenness, dominance and community similarity are D (8.3223), D (3.4677), D (3.8286), D (0.9057), C (0.0404) and D-E (0.6611), respectively. According to the analysis of Pearson correlation, the content of organic matter in soil is strongly positively related to species number, species richness, community diversity and maximum community diversity, and is significantly positively related to the evenness. The content of CO2 in air is opposite to the above result and is negatively related to species number, species richness, community diversity, maximum community diversity and evenness. The results indicate that the contents of organic matter and CO2 are the important factors influencing the community structure of cave animals.  相似文献

The relationship between plant diversity and ecosystem services is a controversial topic in ecology that may be due, at least in part, to the variety of methods used to define and quantify diversity. This study examined the relationship between plant diversity and 11 ecosystem properties of a restored wetland in northern China by considering four primary components of diversity (dominance, richness, evenness, and divergence). Each diversity component was expressed by eight taxonomic and functional diversity indices respectively. Results showed that trait-based functional diversity had a stronger correlation with ecosystem processes than non-trait taxonomic diversity did. Among the four components of diversity, dominance (in terms of mean trait value index) was the best in explaining the variation in ecosystem processing. Richness and divergence also had significant correlations with ecosystem properties in some instances. By contrast, evenness had no significant correlation with most of the studied ecosystem properties. Our results indicated that wetland ecosystem properties are significantly related to certain traits of the dominant species. Thus, the dominant species and functional traits should be considered before the number of species in managing diversity and enhancing certain ecosystem functions of wetlands, especially in the case of conservation.  相似文献

Questions

Does functional diversity play a more important role than species richness in complementary resource use? Is the effect of functional diversity on complementarity greater when species evenness is higher? Does functional dominance play an important role in resource use when species evenness is low?

Location

An arable field in Linhai City, Zhejiang Province, China.

Methods

We assembled experimental plant communities with different species richness (one, two, four, eight and 12 species) and evenness (low and high). In each community, we quantified light interception efficiency (LIE ) and light complementarity index (LC ) to reflect light use. We measured four functional traits related to light capture to quantify functional diversity and functional dominance. We then tested effects of observed species richness, functional diversity and functional dominance on LIE , LC and above‐ground biomass in the low and high evenness communities.

Results

Functional diversity was positively related to LIE , LC and above‐ground biomass in the high evenness communities, but not in the low evenness communities. In contrast, functional dominance was positively related to LIE and negatively related to LC in the low evenness communities, but not in the high evenness communities. Moreover, functional dominance had a larger promotion to above‐ground biomass in the low evenness communities. Observed species richness and evenness had a significant interactive effect on LIE and LC . LIE of a species mixture of the low evenness communities was positively correlated with LIE of the monoculture consisting of the species with the highest initial abundance in the species mixture, while LC of a species mixture of the low evenness communities was negatively correlated with it.

Conclusions

Functional diversity and functional dominance play a crucial role in light complementary use of plant communities, and their effects on light complementarity are mediated by species evenness. Thus, interactions of functional traits and evenness may greatly affect ecosystem functioning.

The relationship between levels of dominance and species richness is highly contentious, especially in ant communities. The dominance‐impoverishment rule states that high levels of dominance only occur in species‐poor communities, but there appear to be many cases of high levels of dominance in highly diverse communities. The extent to which dominant species limit local richness through competitive exclusion remains unclear, but such exclusion appears more apparent for non‐native rather than native dominant species. Here we perform the first global analysis of the relationship between behavioral dominance and species richness. We used data from 1,293 local assemblages of ground‐dwelling ants distributed across five continents to document the generality of the dominance‐impoverishment rule, and to identify the biotic and abiotic conditions under which it does and does not apply. We found that the behavioral dominance–diversity relationship varies greatly, and depends on whether dominant species are native or non‐native, whether dominance is considered as occurrence or relative abundance, and on variation in mean annual temperature. There were declines in diversity with increasing dominance in invaded communities, but diversity increased with increasing dominance in native communities. These patterns occur along the global temperature gradient. However, positive and negative relationships are strongest in the hottest sites. We also found that climate regulates the degree of behavioral dominance, but differently from how it shapes species richness. Our findings imply that, despite strong competitive interactions among ants, competitive exclusion is not a major driver of local richness in native ant communities. Although the dominance‐impoverishment rule applies to invaded communities, we propose an alternative dominance‐diversification rule for native communities.  相似文献

We aimed to determine which factors explain the relative abundances of climbing plants in a tropical sandy coastal plant community, locally called restinga, in SE-Brazil, where facilitation is an important mechanism controlling shrub and tree diversity. The factors examined were: associations with host trees and shrubs, environmental conditions, associations with herbs and space. We surveyed a total of 84 vegetation patches within two hectares of open restinga vegetation. Climbers, trees, shrubs and herbs were sampled using an adapted cover pin frame approach. Partial constrained ordination (pRDA) was used to partition the variation of climber species relative abundances into four sources: trees and shrubs relative abundances, herb species relative abundances, environmental variables (patch architecture and size), and the spatial coordinates. Linear models were used to model the relationship of climber diversity as a function of the environmental factors. A total of 12 climber species belonging to 5 families were recorded. Associations between climber species with subordinate trees and shrubs were the major determinants of climber presence in these vegetation patches. The support for growth created by these trees and shrubs had a secondary role in explaining these patterns. We found no relationship between tree dominance and climber species dominance in each patch. However, most climbers were associated with subordinate shrubs. Trellis availability at the first stratum was related to greater climber diversity suggesting that subordinate trees and shrubs may be crucial to promote climber diversity in this plant community. Space and associations with herbs had a minor contribution to overall variation. While 15 years of research in the site associated local floristic diversity to dominant trees, our results demonstrate that climber diversity in this community is governed by interactions with subordinate host woody species related to the environmental support for growth created by such trees and shrubs.  相似文献

Grazer diversity effects on ecosystem functioning in seagrass beds   总被引:10,自引:3,他引:7
High plant species richness can enhance primary production, animal diversity, and invasion resistance. Yet theory predicts that plant and herbivore diversity, which often covary in nature, should have countervailing effects on ecosystem properties. Supporting this, we show in a seagrass system that increasing grazer diversity reduced both algal biomass and total community diversity, and facilitated dominance of a grazer‐resistant invertebrate. In parallel with previous plant results, however, grazer diversity enhanced secondary production, a critical determinant of fish yield. Although sampling explained some diversity effects, only the most diverse grazer assemblage maximized multiple ecosystem properties simultaneously, producing a distinct ecosystem state. Importantly, ecosystem responses at high grazer diversity often differed in magnitude and sign from those predicted from summed impacts of individual species. Thus, complex interactions, often opposing plant diversity effects, arose as emergent consequences of changing consumer diversity, advising caution in extrapolating conclusions from plant diversity experiments to food webs.  相似文献

From July 2002 to July 2004, we investigated the soil fauna in the Dongjiao coconut plantation of Hainan Island. A total of 5,378 specimens were obtained. These species represented 4 phyla, 12 classes and 27 genera. The soil animal clusters are as follows: All major animal groups presented in a tropical rain forest are present in Dongjiao coconut plantation's soil community. The Dongjiao coconut plantation demonstrated the typical characteristics of a tropical soil animal community. The number of species and the diversity index (H) increase from the high latitude areas toward the equator; The dominance index (C) decreased from the high latitude areas toward the equator; the ratio of Acarina/Collembola and the percentage occurrence of increase along the declination of latitude; the occurrence of termites, a typical member of tropical community, varies from absent to present and a dramatic increase along the declination of latitude. Compared to primary tropical rainforests, the Dongjian coconut plantation community is relatively low in species diversity, and has a high dominance index and low diversity index. This may partially due to some characters of the plantation: singular tree species, monsoon climate, seashore location, high pH and salinity of the soil, soil moisture and other environmental factors. A seasonal change occurs in the community structure but is not obvious. Soil around human residences has a higher organic material content, and has higher counts of specimens and numbers of species, compared to other three sampling sites. Coconut production at locations around human residences is higher than at any other microhabitats. The high production is positively correlated with the richness of animal community in the soil.  相似文献

Biodiversity and ecosystem function are often correlated, but there are multiple hypotheses about the mechanisms underlying this relationship. Ecosystem functions such as primary or secondary production may be maximized by species richness, evenness in species abundances, or the presence or dominance of species with certain traits. Here, we combine surveys of natural fish communities (conducted in July and August 2016) with morphological trait data to examine relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem function (quantified as fish community biomass) across 14 subtidal eelgrass meadows in the Northeast Pacific (54°N, 130°W). We employ both taxonomic and functional trait measures of diversity to investigate whether ecosystem function is best predicted by species diversity (complementarity hypothesis) or by the presence or dominance of species with particular trait values (selection or dominance hypotheses). After controlling for environmental variation, we find that fish community biomass is maximized when taxonomic richness and functional evenness are low, and in communities dominated by species with particular trait values, specifically those associated with benthic habitats and prey capture. While previous work on fish communities has found that species richness is often positively correlated with ecosystem function, our results instead highlight the capacity for regionally prevalent and locally dominant species to drive ecosystem function in moderately diverse communities. We discuss these alternate links between community composition and ecosystem function and consider their divergent implications for ecosystem valuation and conservation prioritization.  相似文献

It is proposed that evaluations of disturbance effects upon community diversity will be influenced by two factors currently overlooked in models addressing disturbance-diversity relationships: (1) the spatial scale of inquiry, and (2) the level of the species abundance (dominance) hierarchy at which the search for diversity is done. We analyzed how two disturbance types—cattle grazing and large flooding—affected community diversity at two spatial scales (stand and patch) and three levels of species dominance in a grassland of the Flooding Pampa, Argentina. The effect of disturbance interaction was also examined. Species diversity at the stand scale was reduced by either grazing or flooding. Both disturbances decreased community spatial heterogeneity. At the patch scale, diversity declined with flooding but was enhanced by grazing. Flooding increased diversity under grazing conditions. However, stand diversity was highest in the undisturbed grassland; pattern diversity was the salient feature in this condition. The combination of disturbances yielded the highest patch-scale diversity; grazing increased richness whilst flooding enhanced evenness. Comparisons among grassland conditions appeared scale-dependent. Moreover the extent of disturbance effects varied with the level of dominance hierarchy considered. We point out the relevance of site history and initial conditions, encompassing the possibility of disturbances interaction, to the patters produced by disturbance events. Effects perceived at different spatial scales, or in species positioned at separate dominance levels, may parallel meaningful changes in the relative importance of factors controlling species coexistence and community organization.  相似文献

Plant functional traits underlie vegetation responses to environmental changes such as global warming, and consequently influence ecosystem processes. While most of the existing studies focus on the effect of warming only on species diversity and productivity, we further investigated (i) how the structure of community plant functional traits in temperate grasslands respond to experimental warming, and (ii) whether species and functional diversity contribute to a greater stability of grasslands, in terms of vegetation composition and productivity. Intact vegetation turves were extracted from temperate subalpine grassland (highland) in the Eastern Pyrenees and transplanted into a warm continental, experimental site in Lleida, in Western Catalonia (lowland). The impacts of simulated warming on plant production and diversity, functional trait structure, and vegetation compositional stability were assessed. We observed an increase in biomass and a reduction in species and functional diversity under short-term warming. The functional structure of the grassland communities changed significantly, in terms of functional diversity and community-weighted means (CWM) for several traits. Acquisitive and fast-growing species with higher SLA, early flowering, erect growth habit, and rhizomatous strategy became dominant in the lowland. Productivity was significantly positively related to species, and to a lower extent, functional diversity, but productivity and stability after warming were more dependent on trait composition (CWM) than on diversity. The turves with more acquisitive species before warming changed less in composition after warming. Results suggest that (i) the short-term warming can lead to the dominance of acquisitive fast growing species over conservative species, thus reducing species richness, and (ii) the functional traits structure in grassland communities had a greater influence on the productivity and stability of the community under short-term warming, compared to diversity effects. In summary, short-term climate warming can greatly alter vegetation functional structure and its relation to productivity.  相似文献
