1. Shallow arctic lakes and ponds have simple and short food webs, but large uncertainties remain about benthic–pelagic links in these systems. We tested whether organic matter of benthic origin supports zooplankton biomass in a pond in NE Greenland, using stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen in the pond itself and in a 13C‐enrichment enclosure experiment. In the latter, we manipulated the carbon isotope signature of benthic algae to enhance its isotopic discrimination from other potential food sources for zooplankton. 2. The cladoceran Daphnia middendorffiana responded to the 13C‐enrichment of benthic mats with progressively increasing δ13C values, suggesting benthic feeding. Stable isotope analysis also pointed towards a negligible contribution of terrestrial carbon to the diet of D. middendorffiana. This agreed with the apparent dominance of autochthonous dissolved organic matter in the pond revealed by analysis of coloured dissolved organic matter. 3. Daily net production by phytoplankton in the pond (18 mg C m?2 day?1) could satisfy only up to half of the calculated minimum energy requirements of D. middendorffiana (35 mg C m?2 day?1), whereas benthic primary production alone (145 mg C m?2 day?1) was more than sufficient. 4. Our findings highlight benthic primary production as a major dietary source for D. middendorffiana in this system and suggest that benthic organic matter may play a key role in sustaining pelagic secondary production in such nutrient‐limited high arctic ponds.  相似文献

1. Despite the recognition of its importance, benthic primary production is seldom reported, especially for large lakes. We measured in situ benthic net primary production by monitoring flux in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration in benthic incubation chambers, based on continuous measurements of CO2(aq) flux, alkalinity, and the temperature‐dependent dissociation constants of carbonic acid (K1 and K2). This methodology has the advantages of monitoring net primary production directly as change in carbon, maintaining continuous water recirculation, and having sufficient precision to detect change in DIC over short (i.e. 15 min) incubations, even in alkaline waters. 2. Benthic primary production on Cladophora‐dominated rocky substrata in western Lake Ontario was measured biweekly. Maximum biomass‐specific net photosynthetic rates were highest in the spring (2.39 mgC g Dry Mass?1 h?1), decreased to negative rates by early summer (?0.76 mgC g DM?1 h?1), and exhibited a regrowth in late summer (1.98 mgC g DM?1 h?1). 3. A Cladophora growth model (CGM), previously validated to predict Cladophora biomass accrual in Lake Ontario, successfully simulated the seasonality and magnitude of biomass‐specific primary production during the first cohort of Cladophora growth. Averaged over this growing season (May–Aug), mean areal net benthic production at the estimated depth of peak biomass (2 m) was 405 mg C m?2 d?1. 4. We measured planktonic primary production in proximity to the benthic study and constructed a depth‐resolved model of planktonic production. Using the CGM, benthic primary production was compared with planktonic primary production for the period May–Aug. Net benthic production from the shoreline to the 12 m contour (1–2 km offshore) equalled planktonic production. Closer to shore, benthic primary production exceeded planktonic primary production. Failure to account for benthic primary production, at least during abundant Cladophora growth, will lead to large underestimates in carbon and nutrient flows in the nearshore zone of this Great Lake.  相似文献

Physical-chemical conditions, phytoplankton productivity, community structure and productivity of the macroinvertebrate benthic community were determined during 1976–77 in a subtropical reservoir. Physical-chemical results revealed high nitrate and phosphate concentrations with highest values in the riverine segment. Large phytoplankton populations were present during most of the year. Phytoplankton productivity was high, producing an annual mean of 87 mg C · m−3 · h−1 (12 hours light day). High turbidity in the riverine segment limited phytoplankton productivity during winter and spring. Macrobenthos was dominated by chironomids (Chironomus, Procladius, Coelotanypus and Tanypus) and oligochaetes (Limnodrilus). The annual mean benthic population was estimated at 1,626 · m−2 with a mean dry weight of 0.66 g · m−2. Mean benthic species diversity was 1.80. A lacustrine-riverine community gradient was revealed. Benthic productivity was 6.8 g · m−2 · yr−1 (dry weight) with a P: B ratio of 10. A low correlation was observed between benthic and phytoplankton productivity, and between phytoplankton standing crop and benthic macroinvertebrate numbers throughout the reservoir. Algal food supplies had little impact on the benthic community which was composed predominately of species which fed mostly on organic detritus. Stressful conditions caused by low dissolved oxygen concentrations probably inhibited development of the benthic community throughout the reservoir during summer months, while high sedimentation rates limited development in the head waters.  相似文献

1. Subarctic ponds are seasonal aquatic habitats subject to short summers but often have surprisingly numerous planktonic consumers relative to phytoplankton productivity. Because subarctic ponds have low pelagic productivity but a high biomass of benthic algae, we hypothesised that benthic mats provide a complementary and important food source for the zooplankton. To test this, we used a combination of fatty acid and stable isotope analyses to evaluate the nutritional content of benthic and pelagic food and their contributions to the diets of crustacean zooplankton in 10 Finnish subarctic ponds. 2. Benthic mats and seston differed significantly in total lipids, with seston (62.5 μg mg?1) having approximately eight times higher total lipid concentrations than benthic mats (7.0 μg mg?1). Moreover, the two potential food sources differed in their lipid quality, with benthic organic matter completely lacking some nutritionally important polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), most notably docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid. 3. Zooplankton had higher PUFA concentrations (27–67 μg mg?1) than either of the food sources (mean benthic mats: 1.2 μg mg?1; mean seston: 9.9 μg mg?1), indicating that zooplankton metabolically regulate their accumulation of PUFA. In addition, when each pond was evaluated independently, the zooplankton was consistently more 13C‐depleted (δ13C ?20 to ?33‰) than seston (?23 to ?29‰) or benthic (?15 to ?27‰) food sources. In three ponds, a subset of the zooplankton (Eudiaptomus graciloides, Bosmina sp., Daphnia sp. and Branchinecta paludosa) showed evidence of feeding on both benthic and planktonic resources, whereas in most (seven out of 10) ponds the zooplankton appeared to feed primarily on plankton. 4. Our results indicate that pelagic primary production was consistently the principal food resource of most metazoans. While benthic mats were highly productive, they did not appear to be a major food source for zooplankton. The pond zooplankton, faced by strong seasonal food limitation, acquires particular dietary elements selectively.  相似文献

The abundance and productivity of benthic microalgae in coral reef sediments are poorly known compared with other, more conspicuous (e.g. coral zooxanthellae, macroalgae) primary producers of coral reef habitats. A survey of the distribution, biomass, and productivity of benthic microalgae on a platform reef flat and in a cross-shelf transect in the southern Great Barrier Reef indicated that benthic microalgae are ubiquitous, abundant (up to 995.0 mg chlorophyll (chl) a m–2), and productive (up to 110 mg O2 m–2 h–1) components of the reef ecosystem. Concentrations of benthic microalgae, expressed as chlorophyll a per surface area, were approximately 100-fold greater than the integrated water column concentrations of microalgae throughout the region. Benthic microalgal biomass was greater on the shallow water platform reef than in the deeper waters of the cross-shelf transect. In both areas the benthic microalgal communities had a similar composition, dominated by pennate diatoms, dinoflagellates, and cyanobacteria. Benthic microalgal populations were potentially nutrient-limited, based on responses to nitrogen and phosphorus enrichments in short-term (7-day) microcosm experiments. Benthic microalgal productivity, measured by O2 evolution, indicated productive communities responsive to light and nutrient availability. The benthic microalgal concentrations observed (92–995 mg chl a m–2) were high relative to other reports, particularly compared with temperate regions. This abundance of productive plants in both reef and shelf sediments in the southern Great Barrier Reef suggests that benthic microalgae are key components of coral reef ecosystems.Communicated by Environmental Editor, B.C. We studied chlorophyll a (chl. a), biovolume and species composition of benthic algae and phytoplankton in the eutrophic lower River Spree in 1996. The chl. a concentration was estimated as 3.5 (2.7–4.5) µg/cm2 for epipsammon, 9.4 (7.4–11.9) µg/cm2 for epipelon and 6.7 (5.7–7.8) µg/cm2 for the epilithon (median and 95% C. L.). The mean total biomass of benthic algae was significantly higher (6.0 µg chl. a/cm2) than the areal chl. a content of the pelagic zone (1.6 µg chl. a/cm2). Although certain phytoplankton taxa were abundant in the periphyton, benthic taxa generally dominated the assemblages. Seasonal dynamics of benthic algae were probably controlled by light and nitrate supply (sand), discharge fluctuations (sand, mud) and invertebrate grazing (stones). This paper shows the importance of benthic algae even in phytoplankton‐rich lowland rivers with sandy or muddy sediments. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Summary Four autotrophic compartments were recognised in Lake Kitiesh, King George Island (Southern Shetland) at the beginning of the summer in 1987: snow microalgae, ice bubble communities, phytoplankton in the water column and benthic communities of moss with epiphytes. Chlorophyll a concentration and pigment absorption spectra were obtained in these four compartments before and/or after the thawing of the ice cover. During the ice free period, carbon fixation and biomass was measured in the phytoplankton and in the benthic moss Campyliadelphus polygamus. From these measurements we conclude that the benthic moss is the most significant autotrophic component in this lake in terms of biomass, chlorophyll a content and primary productivity. The integral assimilation number (The ratio of carbon fixation per unit area to biomass per unit area) values were similar for both phytoplankton and the moss, ranging from 3.6 to 5.4 mg C (mg Chl a)–1h–1in phytoplankton and from 4.0 to 6.4 mgC (mg Chl a)–1h–1 in the benthic moss. This approach allows comparisons of carbon fixation efficiency of the chlorophyll a under a unit area between compartments in their different light environments.  相似文献

1. Anthropogenic activities have increased reactive nitrogen availability, and now many streams carry large nitrate loads to coastal ecosystems. Denitrification is potentially an important nitrogen sink, but few studies have investigated the influence of benthic organic carbon on denitrification in nitrate‐rich streams. 2. Using the acetylene‐block assay, we measured denitrification rates associated with benthic substrata having different proportions of organic matter in agricultural streams in two states in the mid‐west of the U.S.A., Illinois and Michigan. 3. In Illinois, benthic organic matter varied little between seasons (5.9–7.0% of stream sediment), but nitrate concentrations were high in summer (>10 mg N L−1) and low (<0.5 mg N L−1) in autumn. Across all seasons and streams, the rate of denitrification ranged from 0.01 to 4.77 μg N g−1 DM h−1 and was positively related to stream‐water nitrate concentration. Within each stream, denitrification was positively related to benthic organic matter only when nitrate concentration exceeded published half‐saturation constants. 4. In Michigan, streams had high nitrate concentrations and diverse benthic substrata which varied from 0.7 to 72.7% organic matter. Denitrification rate ranged from 0.12 to 11.06 μg N g−1 DM h−1 and was positively related to the proportion of organic matter in each substratum. 5. Taken together, these results indicate that benthic organic carbon may play an important role in stream nitrogen cycling by stimulating denitrification when nitrate concentrations are high.  相似文献

Accumulation rates of individual species (SpecAR) and relative abundances (percentages) of benthic foraminifera of an AMS 14C-dated high resolution sediment core from the Norwegian Seas (water depth: 2707 m) provide a record of the faunal fluctuations from the last glacial maximum across the Weichselian deglaciation to the Holocene. During glacial times, the total foraminifera accumulation remains at a very low level (< 100 specimens cm−2 kyr−1) and is dominated by two endofaunal species: Oridorsalis umbonatus (Reuss) and Siphotextularia rolshauseni (Phleger and Parker) and reworked specimens of the genus Elphidium. The following deglaciation period exhibits an increase of the AR of the total fauna at 14 kyr B.P. The species distribution is marked by the last appearance of S. rolshauseni and the first postglacial appearance of suspension feeding Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi (Schwager) 13 kyr B.P. The absolute maximum of benthic foraminiferal AR (2750 spec cm−2 kyr−1 occurred near 9 kyr B.P. at the end of the deglaciation. This maximum also marks the re-appearance of the agglutinating species Cribrostomoides subglobosus (Sars). The post-glacial interval is characterized by a twofold reduction of the total accumulation of benthic foraminifera. The species distribution shows two new species: Ammobaculites agglutinans (d'Orbigny, at 6 kyr B.P.) and Epistominella exigua (Brady, at 3.5 kyr B.P.). The total AR indicates benthic activity during glacial times was at a low level. It was significantly higher during the Holocene with an abrupt increase of benthic foraminiferal abundance from 10 to 9 kyr B.P. The Stepwise re-invasion into the postglacial deep-sea environment maybe related to specific habitat preference.  相似文献

We compiled published data on the nitrogen and carbon stable isotope ratios of phytoplankton and benthic microalgae from lentic systems and explored the primary factors determining the isotope values among systems. Also, we investigated seasonal changes in nitrogen stable isotope ratios of phytoplankton and benthic microalgae in the strongly acidic lake, Lake Katanuma, which has only two dominant species, Pinnularia acidojaponica as a benthic diatom and Chlamydomonas acidophila, a planktonic green alga. From the published dataset, it may be concluded that δ13C of benthic diatoms were more enriched than those of phytoplankton at the same sites, although the nitrogen isotope of phytoplankton and benthic microalgae were similar. This differences in δ13C between benthic microalgae and phytoplankton could be explained by the boundary layer effect. On the other hand, nitrogen isotope values of both benthic microalgae and phytoplankton were primarily controlled by the same environmental factor, and boundary layer effects are not the primary factor determining the nitrogen isotope values of microalgae. Also, we showed temporal dynamics in nitrogen isotopes of benthic and planktonic microalgae species in Lake Katanuma, and the trends of nitrogen isotopes are similar between benthic and planktonic microalgae, as concluded from the published dataset.  相似文献

Potential body size-trophic position relationships of the Darkbarbel catfish Pelteobagrus vachelli (Richardson 1846) were examined using stable isotope analysis. Pelteobagrus vachelli is a benthic feeding fish from Lake Poyang, the largest freshwater lake in China. Two-source mixing model with mussel (Corbicula fluminea) and snail (Bellamya aeruginosa) as baseline primary consumers of planktonic and benthic food webs, respectively, was used to estimate contribution of carbon derived from planktonic vs. benthic food web. Results showed that as an indicator of trophic position, δ15N was negatively correlated with the body length and weight of the fish; on the other hand, as an indicator of the end-member food sources, δ13C was not correlated with fish size. The mixing model results showed that the averaged trophic position of our sampled 3.3–12.7 cm Pelteobagrus vachelli was 3.1 ± 0.2 and derived 68 ± 27% of their food from the benthic food web, confirming that the feeding behavior of the catfish favors benthic food sources.  相似文献

Influence of benthic organisms on solute transport in lake sediments   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Increased inputs of nutrients into the waters of Lake Okeechobee has raised concern that the lake is becoming hypereutrophic. One aspect in understanding the overall cycling and dynamics of the nutrients in the system is the effect of benthic organisms on solute transport. Various diffusional models have been used to approximate the effect of benthic organisms on solute transport within sediments using diffusion coefficient values which represent the pooled contributions of molecular diffusion (D s ) and enhanced solute mixing due to macrobenthos activity (D i ). The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of benthic activity on solute transport by measuringD s (i.e., no benthic activity) and an apparent-dispersion or mixing coefficientD m (i.e., with benthic activity) for the four major sediment types of Lake Okeechobee, Florida using a reservoir technique. This method involved monitoring the depletion of a conservative tracer (tritiated water) from the overlying water (reservoir) resulting from transport into sediments using disturbed sediments repacked in cores (3.2 cm diam.) and undisturbed cores (3.2 to 12 cm diam.) obtained from the lake. Additional estimates ofD m andD s were also obtained by measuring tracer concentration profiles in the sediment cores at the end of a specified diffusion period. Molecular diffusion coefficients (D s ) measured forrepacked cores of sand, littoral, mud and peat sediments ranged from 0.90 to 1.29 cm2 d−1, and estimates ofD s were slightly higher in undisturbed cores without benthic organisms.D m values for undisturbed cores of mud, sand and littoral sediments having macrobenthic populations ranged from 2.09 to 24.78 cm2 d−1; values that were 1.6 to 15 times higher than those in sediments without benthic activity. Undisturbed cores of varying diameter from mud sediments had similar estimates ofD m for tritium; however, the undisturbed cores with larger diameters from littoral sediments yielded larger estimates ofD m , reflecting the heterogeneity of benthic population densities and activity. Therefore,D s estimates may not adequately represent transport processes for mud, sand and littoral sediments of Lake Okeechobee; hence careful consideration should be given to the role of benthic organisms in the overall transport of solutes across the sediment-water interface. 1. During recent decades, Gonyostomum semen populations have spread in northern temperate regions forming dense blooms that may dominate the phytoplankton assemblage for extended periods. In this study, we investigate the effects of G. semen blooms in boreal brown water lakes with special emphasis on phytoplankton, fish and benthic invertebrate assemblages using data from 10 boreal lakes sampled annually over a 10‐year period. 2. Significant differences in phytoplankton and benthic invertebrate assemblages were found between lakes with high (3.01 mm3 L?1; >80% phytoplankton biomass) and lakes with low G. semen biomass (0.03 mm3 L?1; <5% phytoplankton biomass). In particular, high G. semen lakes had lower biomass of smaller, edible phytoplankton and a higher abundance and biomass of benthic invertebrates, especially Chaoborus flavicans, and perch than low G. semen lakes. 3. The length distribution of fish also suggested a tendency towards large and older fish and a lower recruitment success in high G. semen lakes, as denoted by lower abundances of fish shorter than 10 cm and higher biomass and abundance of fish longer than 15 cm in high G. semen lakes. 4. This study shows that high G. semen lakes are characterised by less edible phytoplankton, dominance by a few species and enhanced benthic secondary and fish production. Hence, the conjecture that high biomasses of G. semen create a bottleneck in the energy transfer to higher trophic levels seems less likely in boreal lakes.  相似文献

The effect of warming on the oxygen requirements and the survival of benthic organisms under hypoxia was tested using a meta‐analysis of published results of experiments evaluating the effects of temperature on the median lethal time and median lethal concentration of benthic macrofauna under hypoxia. The meta‐analysis confirmed that survival times under hypoxia were reduced by on average 74% and that median lethal concentration increased by on average 16% when marine benthic organisms were exposed to warmer temperatures. Warming reduced survival times of marine benthic macrofauna under hypoxia by a median of 3.95±1.67 h °C?1 and increased the oxygen thresholds for hypoxia‐driven mortality by a median of 1.02±0.15% saturation °C?1 or 0.07±0.01 mg O2 L?1 °C?1. The corresponding Q10 values averaged 3.01±0.29 for the median survival time and 2.09±0.20 for the median lethal oxygen concentration. Use of these Q10 values predicts that the 4 °C warming expected during the 21st century will lead to survival times 35.6% lower under hypoxia and that the threshold oxygen concentrations for high mortality to occur will increase by, on average, 25.5% if bottom water temperature increased by 4 °C. Hence, ocean warming is expected to increase the vulnerability of benthic macrofauna to reduced oxygen concentrations and expand the area of coastal ecosystems affected by hypoxia.  相似文献

Seasonal changes of phytoplankton were followed over 3 years (1985–87) in a shallow, unstratified and calcareous upland lake. The phytoplankton was of low to moderate abundance and generally dominated by phytoflagellates. Seasonality involved a winter minimum of abundance, a spring maximum of diatoms, and often brief increases in summer that included blue-greens, especially the colonial Gloeotrichia echinulata. Some components were of benthic origin. Seasonal growth of the main component of the phytobenthos, Chara globularisvar. virgata, caused a regular summer depletion in lake water of Ca2+ and HCO3 - (alkalinity) by associated CaCO3 deposition, and a more extreme (and unusual) depletion of K+. Chemical analysis of Chara biomass and of underlying sediments indicated a large benthic nutrient stock, much surpassing that represented by the phytoplankton. Growth in this biomass, and the magnitude of water-borne inputs, influenced the removals of Ca2+, K+ and inorganic N. The phytoplankton was probably limited by a low-P medium, to which co-precipitation of phosphate with CaCO3 may have contributed. A vernal depletion of Si was probably limiting to diatom growth, and appeared to be mainly induced by benthic rather than planktonic diatoms. Examples of long-term change in composition of the phytoplankton and phytobenthos are noted and discussed in relation to the interaction of these components, nutrient enrichment, and possible alternative stable states.  相似文献

1. In extremely acid mining lakes, benthic filamentous green algae (Zygnemataceae, Chlorophyta) thrive as effective competitors for limited carbon (C). These algae could supply C for microbial‐mediated benthic alkalinity generation. However, biomass, productivity and impact of the acidobiontic filamentous green algae at pH ≤3 have not previously been determined. 2. Periphytic filamentous green algae was mapped by harvesting their biomass from 85 1 × 1 m quadrats in mining lake Grünewalder Lauch. Zygogonium ericetorum colonised water depths between 1.6 and 10.5 m covering 88% of total area. Biomass peaked at 5–6 m depth. Total Zygogonium biomass amounted to 72.2 t dry weight for the whole lake (0.94 km2), which corresponds to 16.1 t C and the accumulation of primary production from 2.2 years. 3. Growth of Zygogonium is moderately N, C and extremely P deficient, and seriously stressed by high rates of Fe deposition during summer. Consequently, net primary production (NPP) of Zygogonium, calculated from measured photosynthesis versus irradiance characteristics and calculated underwater irradiance (0.13 g C m?2 year?1) and in situ oxygen measurements (7.8 g C m?2 year?1), corresponds to only 0.3% and 18.1% of pelagic NPP. 4. Neither pelagic nor benthic Zygogonium primary production can supply enough C for efficient acidity removal. However, at rates of benthic NPP in summer of 21.4 mg C m?2 day?1, Zygogonium contributed 26% of the C equivalents to remove acidity associated with ferric iron, contributing at least seasonally to efficient alkalinity generation.  相似文献

Food webs in sub-Antarctic lakes: a stable isotope approach   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
In order to improve the understanding of food-web interactions in sub-Antarctic freshwater systems, we complemented earlier experimental studies with analyses of differences in stable isotopes (15N and 13C) among organisms in two lakes with contrasting productivity. The distribution of the stable isotopes showed that the small copepod Boeckella michaelseni feeds mainly on pelagic POM (particulate organic material), whereas the larger copepod species B. poppei also feeds on benthic algae. Furthermore, the predatory copepod Parabroteas sarsi seems to mainly feed on B. michaelseni, but also on B. poppei and the benthic cladoceran, Alona weineckii. Moreover, stable-isotope data suggest that the diving beetle, Lancetes angusticollis, is not only feeding on B. poppei as indicated from experimental studies, but also on the benthic cladoceran A. weineckii. Although the food webs of the two lakes are very similar, they show considerable differences in the distribution of stable isotopes. We conclude that monitoring, experiments and stable-isotope analysis in combination give a reasonably clear picture of sub-Antarctic freshwater food webs.  相似文献
