Summary The cyclomorphosis ofBrachionus calyciflorus collected from a pond in Pilani, India has been studied. It has been found that the production of additional structures such as posterolateral spines is mainly due to the sufficient quantity of food available for them. The quantitative study of the rotifer in relation to the physicochemical factors of the water reveals that the dissolved oxygen content significantly influences its abundance.  相似文献

All three classical forms of Brachionus calyciflorus Pallas viz., calyciflorus, dorcas and amphiceros were recognised in the impoundment. The form amphiceros was most abundant, and its occurrence is attributed to the presence of Asplanchna brightwelli in the tank. Euglena viridis appears to be the preferred food of B. calyciflorus in this impoundment.  相似文献

We have described the polymorphism in the hatchlings of resting eggs and the morphological variations between the stem females hatched from resting eggs and their successive parthenogenetic generations in the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus. We hatched resting eggs of B. calyciflorus in two different culture mediums: unconditioned medium (IOM) and Asplanchna-conditioned (ACM). The hatching rate of resting eggs in IOM and ACM were 32.5% and 28.5%, respectively, and showed no significant difference. Stem females hatching from these resting eggs had three morphotypes (unspined, single short-spined, and two short-spined) and over 80% of these females were spineless ones. Moreover, the frequency of each morphotype stem females showed similar tendency in IOM and ACM. The production of a variety of morphotypes among stem mothers—rather than all unspined as has been previously reported for this species—may be regarded as a form of bet-hedging in this population of B. calyciflorus. Phenotypic changes in morphology between the stem females hatched from resting eggs and their successive parthenogenetic generations in B. calyciflorus were found. The possible mechanisms, responsible for high proportion of spineless phenotype at early generations from resting eggs and increased spined phenotype in successive parthenogenetic generations, were discussed in the article.  相似文献

A study of lifespan, fecundity, and reproductive schedules was carried out with the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus under different food concentrations. At high food densities (6.1 to 12.4 μg · ml−1, dry mass) there was an increase in offspring number but the reproductive investment remained constantly. This was possible because Brachionus calyciflorus invested a smaller amount of energy one egg volume being able to increase offspring number. Although egg volume was reduced, this was compensated by the greater amount of energy available to the neonates. The length of the prereproductive period remained constant throughout this range of food concentrations. Within this range a reduction in lifespan was observed. This, however, was not due to a total higher reproductive investment, but to an increased offspring rate production resulting in a shortening of the reproductive period. The length of the post-reproductive period was not different at all food concentrations.  相似文献

Asplanchna sylvestrii does not discriminate between groups of Brachionus calyciflorus fed either the cyanobacterium Anabaena flos-aquae or a control diet of Euglena gracilis. We based our analysis on the observed probabilities of attack, capture and ingestion during encounters between predator and prey. While A. sylvestrii was very sensitive to brachionid size, we found no significant affects of prey diet on predatory behavior. Thus, cyanobacterial diet did not influence the short-term predation risk of B. calyciflorus exposed to an effective predator. On the other hand, matched cohorts of A. sylvestrii fed B. calyciflorus cultured on the cyanobacterium reproduced more slowly than those fed the same prey cultured on the control food. With prolonged sympatry, therefore, the long-term risk of Asplanchna predation may be reduced for Brachionus by the latter's consumption of cyanobacteria.  相似文献

1. Herbivorous zooplankton face considerable temporal and spatial variation in food quality, to which they respond by adapting their life histories. Zooplankton may even take up mineral nutrients directly, and use these to counter the effects of algal nutrient limitation (mineral compensation). This study examined the life history of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus fed phosphorus‐, and nitrogen‐limited Scenedesmus obliquus (Chlorophyta), and investigated whether B. calyciflorus was capable of mineral compensation. 2. Both phosphorus‐ and nitrogen‐limited algae gave similar life history responses: somatic growth and reproduction were reduced, whereas lifespan remained unaffected. 3. No evidence was found for mineral compensation in B. calyciflorus in relation to detrimental life history effects, so mineral compensation does not seem to be relevant for this species under field conditions. 4. The similarity in life history responses of B. calyciflorus and the low levels of ω‐3 PUFAs in both phosphorus‐ and nitrogen‐depleted algae suggest that ω‐3 PUFAs were limiting to B. calyciflorus, although other (bio)chemicals or mineral nutrients may also have been important. 5. No trade‐off was observed between life span and reproduction during algal nutrient limitation. Reduced population growth rates of B. calyciflorus were caused by shorter reproductive periods.  相似文献

In the temperature range of 10 to 35°C the relationships of the oxygen consumption and nitrogen excretion rates to temperature in Brachionus calyciflorus PALLAS can be described by an exponential function where Q10 is equal to 2.45 or 2.18, respectively. Temperature adaptation within the range studied resulted in stabilisation of relative protein metabolism which accounted for nearly 50 per cent of the total metabolic loss.  相似文献

The length of the posterolateral spines in the rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, is variable. The effect of the length of these spines on the clearance rates of B. calyciflorus was examined under laboratory conditions using radioactively-labelled yeast (Rhodotorula) and bacteria (Aerobacter). The hypothesis that individuals with longer spines have higher clearance rates than those of similarly-sized individuals with shorter spines was rejected. The effect of body length (L) on the clearance rates (C) of short-spined and long-spined animals was also examined. Statistically significant linear regressions of the form log10 C = aL + b, were derived for both types. The slopes of both regressions were similar and suggest that clearance rate in B. calyciflorus increases as a cube function of body length.  相似文献

Brachionus calyciflorus is able to differentially capture or deflect potential food cells depending on the overall density (numbers µl–1) and size of suspended particles the rotifer encounters while feeding. This has been shown to correlate with behavioral regulation of pseudotrochal structures, and primarily by large medial tufts of compound cilia (cirri). When pseudotrochal cirri are extended laterally, inferred fluid flow pathlines show that only cells in the central 25 µm of the coronal disk are subject to ingestion. When pseudotrochal cirri form medially-oriented screens, fluid flow is directed away from the pseudotrochas and central corona, an effect apparent up to 70 µm in front of a restrained animal. Fluid flow in all areas of the B. calyciflorus corona is at very low Reynolds Number (Re), with calculated values always less than 10–1. Accordingly, removal of cells from feeding currents probably is not due to sieving but is more likely due to direct interception of particles by individual ciliary elements. Certain large cells — such as Euglena gracilis — are retained in the inner pseudotrochal space for up to 500 msec, ample time for B. calyciflorus to assess the physical and chemical characteristics of this or other potential foods.  相似文献

Monogononta is the most speciose class of rotifers, with more than 2,000 species. The monogonont genus Brachionus is widely distributed at a global scale, and a few of its species are commonly used as ecological and evolutionary models to address questions related to aquatic ecology, cryptic speciation, evolutionary ecology, the evolution of sex and ecotoxicology. With the importance of Brachionus species in many areas of research, it is remarkable that the genome has not been characterized. This study aims to address this lacuna by presenting, for the first time, the whole‐genome assembly of the freshwater species Brachionus calyciflorus. The total length of the assembled genome was 129.6 Mb, with 1,041 scaffolds. The N50 value was 786.6 kb, and the GC content was 24%. A total of 16,114 genes were annotated with repeat sequences, accounting for 21% of the assembled genome. This assembled genome may form a basis for future studies addressing key questions on the evolution of monogonont rotifers. It will also provide the necessary molecular resources to mechanistically investigate ecophysiological and ecotoxicological responses.  相似文献

The cuticular oesophagus is a simple expansion of the dorsal pharyngeal wall of the mastax. The ciliary oesophagus is the cellular anterior wall of the stomach lumen, but seems to have the same embryological origin as the pharynx.In Brachionus calyciflorus, its cilia are surrounded by cuticular velums which have the same myelin-like structure and the same function as the buccal velum of Philodina roseola. In all cases, the oesophagus prevents the return of food particles from the stomach to the mastax lumen.  相似文献

SUMMARY. In laboratory experiments, long, Asplanchna-induced posterolateral spines of Brachionus calyciflorus were very effective in preventing their capture and subsequent ingestion by the predator Asplanchna sieboldi but provided no protection against predation by Mesocyclops edax. Young, short-spined B. calyciflorus were always captured after attack by adult A. sieboldi and were ingested in about 12 seconds. Adult, short-spined forms were captured on c. 35% of occasions when attacked by this predator and were ingested in about 50 s. Young and adult long-spined forms were captured by this predator on c. 60% of occasions when attacked, but they both almost invariably escaped or were rejected 20–35 s after capture. Short- and long-spined B. calyciflorus adults were always captured when attacked by adult, female M. edax and were completely ingested in about 20 s and 30 s, respectively. Life-table experiments conducted with B. calyciflorus at several levels of the food organism, Aerobacter aerogenes, showed that neither the possession of long posterolateral spines nor the production of offspring with long posterolateral spines interfered with survivorship, fecundity, or reproductive potential. In the laboratory, the volumes of the amictic parthenogenetic eggs of B. calyciflorus cultured on Euglena or Aerobacter were significantly greater in individuals from populations maintaining long posterolateral spines than in comparable-sized individuals from populations maintaining short spines. Egg volume was generally independent of adult body length, but it was significantly greater in Brachionus fed on Euglena compared with Aerobacter. Possible reasons why B. calyciflorus does not produce long posterolateral spines in the absence of Asplanchna are discussed. Few organisms other than B. calyciflorus are known to develop novel defensive phenotypes in direct response to the presence of a predator. It is suggested that such developmental responses evolve only when two conditions apply: (1) the defensive structure is primarily effective against a single type of predator, and (2) the prey organism exhibiting the response has a short generation time.  相似文献

Summary Techniques are described for the initiation and maintenance of axenic cultures of Euglena gracilis strain Z and monoxenic cultures of Brachionus calyciflorus variety pala with the Euglena, using in both the same defined, buffered medium. The medium, which is inorganic—except for the citrate chelating agent, the buffer, and vitamins B1 and B12 — has been used for the axenic cultuvation of the Euglena for more than 13 months. The monoxenic Brachionus cultures, established by inoculating rotifers into Euglena cultures, have been maintained for more than 8 months. Contamination tests on the rotifer cultures were performed frequently in three different test media.Mictic females, males, and resting eggs of Brachionus were observed in the monoxenic cultures, and considerable variation in the length of the posterolateral spines was noted.The compatibility of a rotifer to a defined medium which sustains the axenic culture of its food organism is a feature of this system which is convenient, useful, and unique to date in synxenic rotifer culture work.Supported by National Science Foundation Grant No. GB 7717.  相似文献

The use of the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus as a test organism for ecotoxicological studies was examined. Changes in the feeding-, swimming behavior- and demographic characteristics of the rotifers exposed to increasing concentrations of copper (Cu) were studied and the relationships between the different test parameters and their ecological relevance evaluated.Relatively simple short-term bioassay methods were developed to measure the swimming activity (2 hours) and the filtration (5 hours) rate. Life-table experiments were performed to asses the long-term effects of Cu on the rotifers. Significant reductions in the filtration rate, the swimming activity and the demographic parameter r were observed at 20, 12 and 5 g 1–1 of Cu, respectively. The implications and the possible ecotoxicological applications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

Population growth and life table demography of the predatory rotifer A. girodi using spineless Brachionus calyciflorus and spined Brachionus havanaensis as prey at densities of 1, 2, 4 and 8 ind. ml–1 at 25°C were studied. Regardless of the prey species, the population of A. girodi increased with increasing availability of Brachionus in the medium. At any given prey density, A. girodi fed B. calyciflorus showed consistently better growth than when fed B. havanaensis. The maximum population densities of A. girodi varied from 0.28 to 1.8 ind. ml–1 depending on the prey species and the density. The rate of population increase observed in population growth studies varied from 0.17 to 0.43 day–1 when fed B. calyciflorus and 0.09 to 0.27 day–1 when fed B. havanaensis. Male population of A. girodi was closely related to female density. The lowest average lifespan was observed for A. girodi when fed B. havanaensis at 1 ind. ml–1, while the converse was the case when fed B. calyciflorus at comparable prey concentration. Net reproductive rates varied from 16 to 26 offspring female–1 lifespan–1 depending on the prey species and concentration. Generation time of A. girodi decreased with increasing food concentrations for both the prey species. The rates of population increase obtained from life table demography were lower for A. girodi when fed B. havanaensis than when fed B. calyciflorus.  相似文献

1. Maternal effects have long been known to influence phenotypic plasticity in rotifers. Females in Brachionus calyciflorus and several other species produce long‐spined offspring when the predatory rotifer Asplanchna is present; B. calyciflorus also develops short spines when food concentrations are low. These spines protect against predation and decrease food threshold concentrations. 2. Some strains of B. calyciflorus develop long spines even in the absence of Asplanchna and other environmental stimuli. We demonstrate in this study that spine length in such cases is dependent on the age of the mother. 3. In strains from Florida and Georgia, offspring spine length increased significantly with birth order, sometimes to lengths formerly observed only in the presence of Asplanchna. Significant variation in this trait was found among and within clones of a strain. Offspring body size also increased with maternal age. This is the first time maternal age has been shown to affect rotifer morphology. 4. These birth‐order effects may have important ecological implications and explain phenotypic plasticity and polymorphism in body size and spine length in populations when predators are absent and food concentrations are high. They may be a bet‐hedging mechanism to assure adaptation to rapid changes in predation pressure or food conditions.  相似文献

Summary The laboratory feeding behavior of Brachionus calyciflorus varies depending upon the type of food cell available in suspension. When feeding on the yeast Rhodotorula glutinis, rotifers show a continuous increase in ingestion with increased cell density between 0.01 and 1000 g dry weight ml-1. Effective clearance rates drop from ca. 50 l animal-1 h-1 to less than 0.5 l animal-1 h-1 over this food density range. When feeding on Englena gracilis, B. calyciflorus ingestion rates are constant between 1.0 and 100 g ml-1 of available food, averaging close to 25 ng animal-1 h-1. The decrease in clearance rate is more striking than with R. glutinis, dropping from 45 l animal-1 h-1 at 0.1 g ml-1 to 0.13 l animal-1 h-1 at 100 g ml-1. Differences between the patterns obtained with the two food types indicate fundamental dissimilarities in the feeding behavior of this rotifer species when presented with these different foods.  相似文献
