The biotypic diversity of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Kurdjumov) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), was assessed in five isolates collected in Colorado. Three isolates, RWA 1, RWA 2, and an isolate from Montezuma County, CO, designated RWA 6, were originally collected from cultivated wheat, Triticum aestivum L., and obtained from established colonies at Colorado State University. The fourth isolate, designated RWA 7, was collected from Canada wildrye, Elymus canadensis L., in Baca County, CO. The fifth isolate, designated RWA 8, was collected from crested wheatgrass, Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn., in Montezuma County, CO. The four isolates were characterized in a standard seedling assay, by using 24 plant differentials, 22 wheat lines and two barley, Hordeum vulgare L., lines. RWA 1 was the least virulent of the isolates, killing only the four susceptible entries. RWA 8 also killed only the four susceptible entries, but it expressed intermediate virulence on seven wheat lines. RWA 6, killing nine entries, and RWA 7, killing 11 entries, both expressed an intermediate level of virulence overall, but differed in their level of virulence to 'CO03797' (Dn1), 'Yumar' (Dn4), and 'CO960293-2'. RWA 2 was the most virulent isolate, killing 14 entries, including Dn4- and Dny-containing wheat. Four wheat lines, '94M370' (Dn7), 'STARS 02RWA2414-11', CO03797, and 'CI2401', were resistant to the five isolates. The results of this screening confirm the presence of five unique Russian wheat aphid biotypes in Colorado.  相似文献

A new dynamic vegetation index (VI)-yield model, that is, the leaf area duration (LAD)-yield model was structured for estimating winter wheat yield according to the measured reflection spectral data on the wheat field, and the relationship between wheat yield and LAI. The model had the information on the photosynthetic area and time during the later period of wheat growth, i. e., the period from the heading stage to the end of filling stage. The accuracy of the estimated wheat yield arrived up to 98% .In addition, the winter wheat yield was also estimated by a VI-yield model in a given wheat growing stage, and the VI in several main wheat growing stages were used for this purpose. The results suggested that the best season for estimating wheat yield using the VI-yield model was in the middle of wheat filling stage for the case study in Yucheng, Shandong province. The accuracy of the estimation could arrive at 96%.  相似文献

 本文在分析冬小麦群体经济产量与叶面积系数关系的基础上,以地面实测冬小麦反射光谱数据为依据,提出了一种新的动态VI-产量模型,即LAD-产量模型。该模型具有冬小麦生育后期(抽穗一灌浆末期)光合面积和光合时间等信息,其冬小麦单位面积产量(简称单产)估测精度为98%。另外,本文根据常用的某一特定生育期VI-产量模型,用冬小麦各生育期的VI值分别估测小麦单产,确定山东省禹城市冬小麦的灌浆中期为最佳估产时间。此时期.小麦单产估测精度为96%。  相似文献

Agriotes obscurus (L.) wireworms assembled in increasing numbers at rows of treated (Agrox DL Plus seed treatment) and untreated wheat, Triticum aestivum L., planted at increasing densities (0, 0.15, 0.30, and 0.60 seeds/cm). In treated wheat plots at all planting densities, no wireworm damage to seedlings was apparent, and total wireworms taken in core samples in wheat rows increased according to the asymptotic equation y = B0(1 -e(-Blx)), where B0 is the asymptote, B1 is the slope of the initial rise, and x is the seeding density. The number of dead wireworms in treated plots increased linearly and intercepted the asymptotic models (theoretical point at which 100% mortality of assembled population occurs) at 0.95 seeds/cm on 11 June and 1.14 seeds/cm on 18 June 1996. Untreated wheat at all densities planted had severe wireworm damage and significantly reduced stand. Populations that had assembled at the surviving untreated wheat were fewer than in the treated wheat plots, and although increasing with seeding density, did not follow the asymptotic model. The data suggest that A. obscurus populations can be assembled and killed in fallowed fields in large numbers at treated trap crops of wheat over a 19-d period when planted in rows spaced 1 m apart at a linear seeding density of 1.5 seeds/cm.  相似文献

Winter cultivars of rye (Secale cereale L., cv Musketeer) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cvs Kharkov and Monopol), but not a spring cultivar of wheat (Glenlea), grown at cold-hardening temperatures showed, at high irradiances, a higher proportion of oxidized to reduced primary, stable quinone receptor (QA) than did the same cultivars grown under nonhardening conditions. In addition, there was a positive correlation between the effects of low-growth temperature on this increased proportion of oxidized QA, and a concomitant increase in the capacity for photosynthesis, and LT50, the temperature at which 50% of the seedlings are killed, in cultivars showing different freezing tolerances. This suggests that low-temperature modulation of the photosynthetic apparatus may be an important factor during the induction of freezing resistance in cereals. Finally, the control of photosystem II photochemistry by nonphotochemical quenching of excitation energy was identical for nonhardened and cold-hardened winter rye. However, examination of measuring temperature effects per se revealed that, irrespective of growth temperature, nonphotochemical quenching exerted a stronger control on photosystem II photochemistry at 10[deg] C rather than at 20[deg] C.  相似文献

A study was made of dietary influences on the large intestinal microbiota of pigs and on the incidence of swine dysentery (SD) after experimental infection with Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, the aetiological agent of SD. Animals were fed diets based either on wheat (expts 1 and 2) or sorghum (expt 2). Grains were ground and fed either raw or after high temperature and pressure extrusion and/or after addition of exogenous enzymes to the whole diet to reduce the starch and soluble non-starch polysaccharides available for fermentation in the large intestine. Limiting fermentation creates conditions that apparently reduce the incidence of SD after infection with B. hyodysenteriae. The diets were fed to weaned pigs for 4-6 weeks, then half the animals on each diet were killed and gut samples collected for microbiology. The treatments had little effect on bacterial numbers. In expt 1, dietary extrusion of wheat reduced lactobacilli in the large intestine. Addition of enzymes to extruded wheat-based diets in expt 2 reduced facultative anaerobes and increased non-sporing anaerobes. Addition of enzymes to a raw sorghum diet in expt 3 decreased numbers of facultative anaerobes, while extrusion of sorghum increased total anaerobes. Bacteroides spp. and Fusobacterium spp., which act in synergy with B. hyodysenteriae in SD, were isolated at a higher percentage in pigs fed the untreated wheat diet than in pigs fed the treated wheat diets. Following experimental infection the incidence of SD amongst pigs fed treated wheat diets was slightly lower than those fed the untreated diet, but with sorghum-based diets the opposite was found. Overall, the different dietary treatments used did not significantly reduce SD.  相似文献

Densities of 10, 20, and 30 hard red winter wheat kernels, Triticum aestivum L., were infested with different life stages of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.), mixed with 35 g of wheat treated with 300 ppm of the Protect-It (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) formulation of diatomaceous earth (DE), and held at 22, 27, and 32 degrees C. A similar test was conducted by exposing densities of 6, 12, and 18 corn kernels infested with different life stages of the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, mixed with 30 g of corn, Zea mays L., treated with 300 ppm of DE. Mortality of adults emerging from kernels in wheat treated with DE was always greater than controls, and ranged from 56 to 90% at 22 degrees C and was >90% at 27 and 32 degrees C. In most treatment combinations, exposure to DE suppressed F1 progeny by 60-90% relative to untreated controls. Mortality of adult maize weevils on treated corn held at 22 and 27 degrees C was lower than mortality of rice weevils on wheat, and ranged from 4 to 84%. F1 production was low in corn held at 22 degrees C, and no F1s were produced in either the controls or the treatments at 32 degrees C. In treated corn held at 27 degrees C, exposure to the DE suppressed F1 progeny by approximately 70-80% relative to the untreated controls. Results of this study show that rice weevils and maize weevils emerging from infested kernels as adults are susceptible to DE, and these results are comparable to other studies in which adult weevils were exposed directly on wheat or corn treated with DE. Although adult weevils will be killed by exposure to DE, some oviposition could still occur and progeny suppression may not be complete; however, application of DE to commodities already infested with internal feeders, such as the rice weevil and the maize weevil, could help eliminate or suppress the infestation.  相似文献

The biological activity of the catholyte and anolyte of bidistilled water in experiments with the germination of wheat grains in the period from March to May has been studied. The activity of solutions, which was characterized by the grain germination index, was high at the beginning of the period, then it gradually decreased and was equal to zero at the middle of the period; at the end of the period it gradually increased almost to initial values. It has been established that the effectiveness of bidistilled water anolyte was as a rule higher than that of catholyte throughout the observation period. At the beginning and end, the stimulating effect of anolyte was 5-5.5 times greater than that of catholyte. The seasonal changes in the biological activity of M 9 medium catholyte were compared with those of bidistilled water anolyte and catholyte. The stimulating effect of M 9 catholyte was estimated by changes in the growth of E. coli cells. The stimulating effect, which was estimated from an increase in the optical density of cell suspension in the initial period at a cultivation temperature of 20 degrees C was 55-60% relative to control (untreated medium). Then it decreased almost to zero in the middle of the period to increase again approximately to the initial values. The assumption has been made that the physicochemical causes of the influence of catholyte and anolyte of bidistilled water on wheat grains and of the culture medium catholyte on E. coli cells are of different nature.  相似文献

Cereal aphids are important pests of wheat, Triticum aestivum L. and Triticum durum Desf. Crop resistance is a desirable method for managing cereal aphids in central North America, where the dominant crop, spring-sown wheat, has a low value per unit area. A diploid ancestor of wheat, Triticum monococcum L., is reported to be partially resistant to Sitobion avenae (Fabricius), the most damaging cereal aphid in the region. To identify potential sources of resistance, 42 accessions of T. monococcum and three cultivated wheats were infested with aphids, seedlings for six days and adult plants for 21 days. Overall resistance was estimated by the biomass loss of foliage and spikes in relation to uninfested control plants. Antibiosis was estimated by the gain in biomass of aphids during infestation, and tolerance was estimated as a biomass conversion ratio, overall resistance divided by antibiosis. A few T. monococcum accessions exhibited partial resistance. No relationship was found between seedling and adult plant resistance: the former exhibited primarily antibiosis and the latter primarily tolerance. Two accessions with antibiosis reduced aphid biomass by 60% compared with commercial wheats. Tolerance was correlated with growth potential, and was useful only in accessions with high growth potential. Four accessions exhibited tolerance levels at least 30% greater than commercial wheats. Highly susceptible accessions also were identified, which would be useful for investigating the inheritance of antibiosis and tolerance.  相似文献

Experiments with dieldrin seed-dressings were done to see whether the conditions favouring their action against wheat bulb fly larvae apply also to frit fly.
Experiments with oats and wheat in boxes and a small field trial with oats showed that fewer newly hatched larvae were killed when dieldrin-treated seed was sown deeply than when sown 1/4 - 1/2 in. deep; shallow sowing probably puts the insecticide where the larvae are likely to meet it before they attack the plant. Kill was never complete even with dieldrin applied at almost forty times more than the highest rate normally used. This is partly because some larvae hatch from eggs on the plant and these, unlike those from soil eggs, can enter the shoot without touching the seed dressing.
Even in the most favourable circumstances (large doses of dieldrin applied to the shallow-sown seed and the plant at the one-leaf stage at the time of attack) there was little evidence that frit fly larvae are killed inside the shoot by systemic action of dieldrin translocated from the seed. This is not because the pales which normally surround the oat seed impair the uptake of insecticide, or because of any other factor specific to oats. Frit fly larvae also survived in wheat from seed dressed with doses of dieldrin that can kill almost all wheat bulb fly larvae by systemic action. Interactions between biotype E greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), and wheat, Triticum aestivum L., were investigated using resistant and susceptible near isogenic lines of the greenbug resistance gene Gb3. In an antixenosis test, the greenbugs preferred susceptible plants to resistant ones when free choice of hosts was allowed. Aphid feeding resulted in quick and severe damage to susceptible plants, which seemed to follow a general pattern spatially and was affected by the position where the greenbugs were initially placed. Symptom of damage in resistant plants resembled senescence. Within-plant distribution of aphids after infestation was clearly different between the two genotypes. Significantly more greenbugs fed on the first (oldest) leaf than on the stem in resistant plants, but this preference was reversed in the susceptible one. After reaching its peak, aphid population on the susceptible plants dropped quickly. All susceptible plants were dead in 10-14 d after infestation due to greenbug feeding. Aphid population dynamics on resistant plants exhibited a multipeak curve. After the first peak, the greenbug population declined slowly. More than 70% of resistant plants were killed 47 d after infestation. Performance of both biotype E and I greenbugs on several Gb3-related wheat germplasm lines were also examined. It seems that the preference-on-stem that was characteristic of biotype E greenbugs on the susceptible plants was aphid biotype- and host genotype-dependent. Results from this study suggested that antixenosis, antibiosis, and tolerance in the resistant plants of wheat might all contribute to resistance against greenbug feeding.  相似文献

We estimated carcass density and determined cause of death in a peak-density lemming, Lemmus lemmus , population at Finse, Norway. Of 74 recovered carcasses, 80% had subcutaneous haematoma (blood underneath the skin) in the head region, though the skin on the skull most often appeared unharmed. Thirty percent were apparently killed by a mustelid predator, while 51% were probably killed by corvids. Carcass density was 26.6 and 9.4ha-1 in good and poor lemming habitats, respectively.  相似文献

The most commonly used tool for sampling soil for eggs of the wheat bulb fly Delia coarctata Fall.) is a corer, but in Scotland samples are taken with a modified shovel. The sampling properties of a corer and shovel were compared in two exercises in which soil samples were taken from the ridge, sides and furrow of drills of maincrop potatoes at several sites in east Scotland. Although each tool sampled approximately the same surface area of soil, the corer sampled three times as much soil as the shovel. The numbers of wheat bulb fly eggs estimated by the corer and shovel were similar in both sampling exercises and there were no indications that the comparison of the two tools was affected by the sampling position on the potato ridge. The results of the two exercises gave no reason to believe that in similar conditions the shovel is an inferior sampling tool or that population estimates obtained with a shovel in Scotland are not comparable with those obtained with a corer. Evidence from some sites suggested that wheat bulb flies lay more eggs on the potato ridge than in the furrow.  相似文献

The analysis of the hexaploid wheat genome (Triticum aestivum L., 2n=6x=42) is hampered by its large size (16,974 Mb/1C) and presence of three homoeologous genomes (A, B and D). One of the possible strategies is a targeted approach based on subgenomic libraries of large DNA inserts. In this work, we purified by flow cytometry a total of 107 of three wheat D-genome chromosomes: 1D, 4D and 6D. Chromosomal DNA was partially digested with HindIII and used to prepare a specific bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library. The library (designated as TA-subD) consists of 87,168 clones, with an average insert size of 85 kb. Among these clones, 53% had inserts larger than 100 kb, only 29% of inserts being shorter than 75 kb. The coverage was estimated to be 3.4-fold, giving a 96.5% probability of identifying a clone corresponding to any sequence on the three chromosomes. Specificity for chromosomes 1D, 4D and 6D was confirmed after screening the library pools with single-locus microsatellite markers. The screening indicated that the library was not biased and gave an estimated coverage of sixfold. This is the second report on BAC library construction from flow-sorted plant chromosomes, which confirms that dissecting of the complex wheat genome and preparation of subgenomic BAC libraries is possible. Their availability should facilitate the analysis of wheat genome structure and evolution, development of cytogenetic maps, construction of local physical maps and map-based cloning of agronomically important genes.  相似文献

A hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library was constructed for cloning Yr5 and other genes conferring resistance to stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici). Intact nuclei from a Yr5 near-isogenic line were used to isolate high molecular weight DNA, which was partially cleaved with HindIII and cloned into pECBAC1 and pIndigoBAC-5 vectors. The wheat BAC library consisted of 422,400 clones arrayed in 1100 micro-titer plates (each plate with 384 wells). Random sampling of 300 BAC clones indicated an average insert size of 140 kb, with a size range from 25 to 365 kb. Ninety percent of the clones in the library had an insert size greater than 100 kb and fewer than 5% of the clones did not contain inserts. Based on an estimated genome size of 15,966 Mb for hexaploid wheat, the BAC library was estimated to have a total coverage of 3.58x wheat genome equivalents, giving approximately 96% probability of identifying a clone representing any given wheat DNA sequence. Twelve BAC clones containing an Yr5 locus-specific marker (Yr5STS7/8) were successfully selected by PCR screening of 3-dimensional BAC pools. The results demonstrated that the T. aestivum BAC library is a valuable genomic resource for positional cloning of Yr5. The library also should be useful in cloning other genes for stripe rust resistance and other traits of interest in hexaploid wheat.  相似文献

The susceptibility of various life stages of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), a pest of stored wheat, Triticum aestivum L., to flameless catalytic infrared radiation in the 3-7-microm range was evaluated in the laboratory. Immature stages were collected from flour infested with T. castaneum adults only for 1 d. Stages collected after 1 d represented eggs (collected on day 0); those collected after 7, 14, and 21 d from day 0 represented larvae in different developmental stages, whereas those collected after 24 d represented pupae. Adults (2 wk old) were collected after 42 d. Each of these stages was exposed for 45 or 60 s in 113.5 or 227.0 g of wheat at a distance of 8.0 or 12.7 cm from a bench top infrared emitter. The mean temperatures attained during exposures were measured continuously using a noncontact infrared thermometer connected to a computer. The mean grain temperatures attained increased with an increase in exposure time and were inversely related to distance from the emitter. Grain quantity least influenced mean temperatures attained. Pupae were the least susceptible stage and larvae collected after 7 d were the most susceptible stage. Variation in probability of death of various life stages decreased with an increase in mean grain temperatures attained. All life stages were killed after a 60-s exposure at a distance of 8.0 cm from the emitter in 113.5 g of wheat, where the mean +/- SE temperatures attained ranged from 107.6 +/- 1.2 to 111.4 +/- 0.5 degrees C. Our laboratory results using small grain quantities and short exposure times showed that flameless catalytic infrared radiation can be a valuable tool for managing insects in stored organic and nonorganic wheat.  相似文献

In two experiments done in successive years to compare the growth and yield of Cappelle wheat either protected from or exposed to attacks by larvae of wheat bulb fly, the plots were previously fallowed, but egg laying was prevented on half of each plot by using Polythene soil covers. In the first season wheat was sown at the end of October, November and December and in the second season in late October and in early January, when there were two sowings, one with and one without a spring application of herbicide. The infestation rate was 1·1-1·7 million eggs per acre, typical of a moderate attack. Larvae had little effect on the yield of October-sown wheat as the plants had two shoots each when first attacked and few were killed. On plots sown late, yield was decreased by up to 22%, as plants had only a single shoot when attacked and many were killed. The main effect of wheat bulb fly was to reduce the number of ear-bearing shoots by killing plants and restricting the production of new shoots. Surviving plants partially compensated by producing more ear-bearing shoots with heavier ears and slightly heavier seeds than normal. Killed plants were not distributed uniformly but were often in patches several feet across. Wheat on the attacked plots ripened more slowly and unevenly than on the unattacked plots. Weather affects the growth of the plants and activity of the larvae and thus partly determines percentage shoot survival.  相似文献

A fractured right mandible with midlength nonunion and oral lesions were noted in a subsistence-harvested female bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) near Wainwright, Alaska (USA). The cause of the fracture was not apparent. The fracture resulted in misalignment of the mandible. The abnormal mobility at the fracture site probably caused irregular baleen stowage within the oral cavity, leading to breakage of many baleen plates and extensive ulceration of the tongue and lips. Good body condition suggested the fracture was not debilitating.  相似文献

Soil respiration was measured throughout the year (June 1992 to May 1993) in a mature, deciduous, broad-leaved forest and an adjacent, clear-felled stand which was made in November 1991, in Hiroshima Prefecture, west Japan. The same soil temperature and soil moisture content as those in the forest stand were maintained in two frame boxes covered with sheets of white netting in the clear-felled stand to observe soil respiration. A herbicide was applied to the cut end of all stumps in one of the two frame boxes in order to kill the root system. There was no significant difference in the aboveground biomass and soil environmental conditions between the forest and the frame boxes in the clear-felled stands. The difference in soil respiration rate between the forest and the frame box, in which the root system was killed by the herbicide, was considered to be due largely to the contribution of root respiration. Taking into consideration CO2 evolution due to the decomposition of roots killed and the change in A0 layer respiration rate after clear-felling, the proportion of root respiration to the total soil respiration before clear-felling was estimated to be 51% annually, which coincides closely with those values estimated previously in mature forests by other methods. The difference in the soil respiration rate between the two frame boxes (one with killed roots and the other with undisturbed roots) suggested that the annual root respiration rate just after clear-felling dropped to about two-thirds (70%) of that before clear-felling.  相似文献
