Capsule Common Sandpiper populations at the edge of their range do not recruit so well.

Aims To compare the survival rates, breeding success and recruitment of a population near the edge of its range (Peak District) with one more centrally placed (Borders).

Methods Populations were censused weekly; adults and chicks were ringed, and apparent survival of adults determined by resighting colour-ringed birds. Breeding success was assessed from ringing chicks and the guarding behaviour of their parents over 3–4 weeks post-hatching.

Results Survival rates of adults and their breeding success were similar in the two sites. Recruits were rarely ringed chicks returning to near their natal site; they were usually newly recruited adults. In both, natal dispersal took returning chicks away from their natal site, by 3–6 km, but far more potential recruits returned to the Borders (51% compared with 4%). The population in the Borders was more variable, but recovered better from declines.

Conclusions There is no obvious difference in survival or reproductive rates that would explain the different recent fates of the two study populations. Differential survival over winter in West Africa (the presumed wintering grounds) is unlikely to explain the recent decline of the Peak District population, because conditions there should have affected the Borders population too. The Peak District population is exposed at the edge of the species' range, and it seems to be poorer breeding success across its general range that has caused the poorer recruitment there, and hence the decline.  相似文献

Red-billed Firefinches were netted and ringed in Lochinvar National Park, Zambia, in 1972 and 1973 and were netted sporadically through 1975. Most nested from March to May, i.e., in the late rainy season and in the early dry season, though some nested as late as August. Nearly all evidently bred in their first year. Moult generally began after breeding was completed, and the indicated average duration of moult was 3–5-4 months. The main foods taken at all times of year were seeds of the seasonal grasses Echinochloa colonum and Setaria spp.
Local population densities, estimated by two methods, were in the range 33–86 birds per km2. Ringing results demonstrated overlapping activity ranges in the breeding season. Dispersal movements were non-directional, and varied up to 14 km. Some ringed birds moved regularly each year between a particular waterhole and a breeding site; other did not move from the site of original ringing. Most dispersal was evident in the dry season (June and July) and in the early rains (October and November). Genetically effective dispersal of young from the site of birth to the site of the first breeding season was up to 6'8 km, and some adults were netted in sites a few kilometres apart in successive breeding seasons. Some dispersing firefinches crossed the song dialect boundaries of the Village Indigobirds.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Various doses of a microsporan parasite, Nosema sp., were fed to third and fourth instar larvae of Lesioderma sericorne that infested different types of stored grains. A spore dose of 3 × 103 spores/individual resulted in a 39% infection rate, reduction in larval and adult weights, and mean spore concentrations of 1.28 ± 0.2 × 108 spores/larva and 1.1 ± 0.2 × 108 spores/adult. At the above dose, mortality was not well marked (about 35% in larvae and 25% in adults). At 3 × 104 spores/individual, the rate of mortality increases to 80% in larvae and 60% in adults. However, more of the pest population (88% of larvae and 73% of adults) died at a dose of 3 × 105 spores/individual. This dose produced mean spore concentrations of 3.91 ± 0.2 × 108 spores/larva and 2.89 ± 0.2 × 108 spores/adult. Insect death was caused by heavy damage to gut epithelia and fat bodies.  相似文献

Four female Peregrine Falcons Falco peregrinus breeding on the Kola Peninsula, Russia, were fitted with satellite-received transmitters in 1994. Their breeding home ranges averaged 1175 (sd = ±714) km2, and overlapped considerably. All left their breeding grounds in September and migrated generally south-west along the Baltic Sea. The mean travel rate for three falcons was 190 km/day. Two Falcons wintered on the coasts of France and in southern Spain, which were, respectively, 2909 and 4262 km from their breeding sites. Data on migration routes suggested that Falcons took a near-direct route to the wintering areas. No prolonged stopovers were apparent. The 90% minimum convex polygon winter range of a bird that migrated to Spain encompassed 213 km2 ( n  = 54). The area of the 50% minimum convex polygon was 21.5 km2 ( n  = 29). Data from this study agree with others from North America that show that Falcons breeding in a single area do not necessarily follow the same migratory path southward and do not necessarily use the same wintering grounds.  相似文献

Efficiency of imidacloprid and pymetrozine on population growth parameters of cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae L. (Homoptera: Aphididae) was determined using demographic toxicology by leaf dip method. At first, bioassay tests were performed. The LC50 value and confidence limit for imidacloprid and pymetrozine were 1.61 × 10^-5 mol/L (0.74 × 10^-5-2.66 × 10^-5) and 2.14 × 10^-4 mol/L (1.24 × 10^-4-3.40 × 10^-4), respectively. To evaluate the sublethal effect of two insecticides on population growth parameters of cabbage aphid, LC30 concentrations of imidacloprid and pymetrozine were used at 5 mol/L and 30 mol/L. The experiments were carried out in a incubator at 20±1℃, 60% ± 5% RH and 16:8 (L:D) photoperiod on canola seedlings, Brassica napus L. var. 'PF'. Net fecundity rate decreased in both insecticide-treated populations. Intrinsic rates of increase (rm) were lower in imidacloprid and pymetrozine treatments than in controls. Intrinsic birth rates also decreased in treated populations. There was a relative increase in intrinsic death rates of treated populations. The mean generation times and doubling time were also lower in populations treated with insecticides than in controls. There was a considerable reduction in the average numbers of nymphs reproduced per female as compared with the control. The average longevity of female adults in the control was significantly different from those treated with imidacloprid and pymetrozine. However, there was no significant differences in aphid life-table parameters between the two insecticide-treated populations (P 〉 0.01).  相似文献

The population ecology of newts was investigated between 1969 and 1974 in two localities near Gothenburg, SW Sweden: the Gunnebo park pond (about 300 m2) where Triturus cristatus Laurenti and T. vulgaris L. are sympatric, and a rock-pool (6 m2) in Billdal with only T. vulgaris. At Gunnebo, a population of about 350 breeding T. cristatus was found with about as many males as females but males being more aquatic than females. An annual survival of 0.7–0.8 was estimated for the adults. The T. vulgaris population at the same locality was estimated to about 250–300 breeding adults with a sex ratio possibly in favour of males. The survival of adults was found to be extremely low and a very small percent of the adults seems to breed more than once. The Billdal T. vulgaris population was estimated to contain nearly 70 breeding adults with a sex ratio very near to 1:1. The annual survival of adults was found to be 0.5. The different survival of the two T. vulgaris populations are discussed with particular reference to predation. The age at which newts breed for the first time seems to vary; for T. vulgaris five years may well be the normal age. Factors that may limit the sizes of the populations, possible reasons for differences in frequency of occurrence in water, and possible predators are discussed.  相似文献

Colonization of secondary woodlands by Anemone nemorosa   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Migration of the herb species Anemone nemorosa from older woodlands into adjacent, recently established deciduous woodlands on former arable land was studied. The wood anemone had colonized part of all studied recent woods, varying in age between 30 and 75 years. Cover of A. nemorosa in the recent woods decreased with increasing distance from the older woodland at all sites but one, indicating dispersal limitation during colonization. The advancing edge of most populations was characterized by negative logarithmic decrease in cover with establishment of isolated pioneer individuals and later gradual infill between pioneers. Migration rates were calculated by three methods. The mean migration rate of A. nemorosa based on observed maximum cover in the recent woods was 0.20 m year1, 0.40 m year-1 based on half maximum cover and 0.85 m year1 based on the individual found farthest from the former woodland border. The calculated migration rates were consistently higher than the rate of possible rhizome growth. Seed dispersal and establishment is thus very important for colonization of new woodlands. Migration rates increased with tree canopy cover–especially cover of broad-leaved species with quickly decomposing litter–and with soil pH. Migration rates decreased with increasing grass cover in the field layer. These differences in migration rates may be due to increased micro-site availability for establishment at high canopy cover, low grass cover and high soil pH. Our results show that the wood anemone generally colonizes recent woods from nearby source populations. However, colonization proceeds relatively slowly and is limited by both seed dispersal and availability of suitable micro-sites. Gradients in abundance of A. nemorosa within secondary woods may be detectable for long periods of time and indicate the recent origin of a woodland.  相似文献

Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis colonies from the Firth of Forth south to the Fame Islands (SE Scotland and NE England) were surveyed in 1982 and 1983 for nesting Shags ringed as chicks or adults in the previous 20 years. On average, 5% of 863 Shags ringed as chicks were breeding away from their natal colony, and only 1% of 401 marked adults had left their breeding colony. The proportion p of chicks that settled at or beyond distance D from the natal colony followed the relationship p = 0.263D-0.771, implying that more Shags moved 10 km or beyond to breed than expected from diffusion models or a constant-rate dispersal model; adjusted for birds that settled outside the study area, the relationship was p = 0.314D-0771. There was no effect of colony size on emigration rate, but females showed a greater tendency to settle away from the natal colony than did males. At the natal colony, more males (69%) than females (47%) nested within 300 m of their birthplace. Two mechanisms appear to determine where a Shag settles to breed: a navigational one governing the return to the natal colony, plus the competitive process of nest-site establishment.  相似文献

Growth rates, podomere addition, and secondary production of Arcilalitrus dorrieni (Hunt, 1925) populations inhabiting two neighbouring woodland sites at Kylemore, Co. Galway, Ireland, were investigated. One site was a mixed deciduous woodland infested with Rhododendron ponticum. The other a pure coniferous stand of Pinus contorta var. latifolia S. Wats. Seasonal changes in biomass were recorded at the two sites. In both years of the study, maximum biomass was recorded in September. Females had a higher growth rate than males, but growth rates of both males and females were higher at the mixed deciduous site. The number of podomeres on the second antenna was correlated with the size of the animal. The average length of A. dorrieni at each podomere number appeared to change seasonally. Comparisons of mean spring values with mean summer values showed a statistically significant decrease in mean amphipod length for a given podomere number, though this was more marked at the mixed deciduous site. Annual secondary production rates ranged from 5.06 g dry wt m-2 year-1at the coniferous site to 14.55 g dry wt m-2 year-1 at the mixed deciduous site. P:B values ranged from 2.41 at the coniferous site to 3.01 at the mixed deciduous site. Results are compared between sites and with data from other relevant crustacean species.  相似文献

Knowledge of the rate, distance and direction of dispersal within and among breeding areas is required to understand and predict demographic and genetic connectivity and resulting population and evolutionary dynamics. However dispersal rates, and the full distributions of dispersal distances and directions, are rarely comprehensively estimated across all spatial scales relevant to wild populations. We used re‐sightings of European Shags Phalacrocorax aristotelis colour‐ringed as chicks on the Isle of May (IoM), UK, to quantify rates, distances and directions of dispersal from natal to subsequent breeding sites both within IoM (within‐colony dispersal) and across 27 other breeding colonies covering 1045 km of coastline (among‐colony dispersal). Additionally, we used non‐breeding season surveys covering 895 km of coastline to estimate breeding season detection probability and hence potential bias in estimated dispersal parameters. Within IoM, 99.6% of individuals dispersed between their natal and observed breeding nest‐site. The distribution of within‐colony dispersal distances was right‐skewed; mean distance was shorter than expected given random settlement within IoM, yet some individuals dispersed long distances within the colony. The distribution of within‐colony dispersal directions was non‐uniform but did not differ from expectation given the spatial arrangement of nest‐sites. However, 10% of all 460 colour‐ringed adults that were located breeding had dispersed to a different colony. The maximum observed dispersal distance (170 km) was much smaller than the maximum distance surveyed (690 km). The distribution of among‐colony dispersal distances was again right‐skewed. Among‐colony dispersal was directional, and differed from random expectation and from the distribution of within‐colony dispersal directions. Non‐breeding season surveys suggested that the probability of detecting a colour‐ringed adult at its breeding location was high in the northeastern UK (98%). Estimated dispersal rates and distributions were therefore robust to incomplete detection. Overall, these data demonstrate skewed and directionally divergent dispersal distributions across small (within‐colony) and large (among‐colony) scales, indicating that dispersal could create genetic and demographic connectivity within the study area.

Since 1968, Turtle Doves Streptopelia turtur in Britain have declined in number by 70% and in breeding range by at least 25%. This study was undertaken during the 1998–2000 breeding seasons at two sites in East Anglia to examine habitat use and foraging ecology. Home ranges of radiotagged Turtle Doves were 0.3–1130 ha in size and contained more woodland than expected from availability. Radiotagged birds undertook foraging trips of up to 10 km. Turtle Doves were recorded feeding primarily at 'man-made' sites (i.e. spilt grain, animal feed and grain stores) and were only infrequently recorded feeding at 'natural' sites. Diet analysis showed that wheat and rape seed averaged 61% of the seeds eaten by Turtle Doves. This contrasts with a study undertaken in Britain in the 1960s, when the seeds of wild plants (weeds) constituted over 90% of those eaten, with wheat and rape seeds making up only 5%. The current arrangements for set-aside and agri-environmental schemes provide a framework for the establishment and maintenance of weed-rich areas on farmland as a source of wild food.  相似文献

In many bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), intraspecific competition is a limiting factor governing their population dynamics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing infestation densities on the breeding performance of Tomicus destruens (Wollaston), one of the main pests of Mediterranean pine forests. Six densities (ranging from 0.25 to 1.50 females   dm−2) were tested under laboratory conditions on stone pine logs, assessing the mortality of eggs, larvae, and pupae, and recording the number of emerging adults. Density significantly affected the fertile tract of the maternal galleries, i.e., those containing eggs, which was shorter at densities higher than 0.75. Numbers of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults per female decreased markedly when density increased from 0.25 to 1.5, although differences were statistically significant only at a density of 0.75 and higher. The lowest mortality was found in larvae reared at a density of 0.25 (17.7%) and the highest in pupae at 1.5 (84.8%). Increasing density affected the pre-emergence stages in different ways, with pupae and larvae suffering the highest increases in mortality (39.5 and 163.6%, respectively). The breeding performance of T. destruens (number of eggs laid reaching adulthood) progressively decreased from 17 to 4% with increasing densities, although at low infestation, the mean number of emerging adults per dm2 of bark increased with density, showing a positive trade-off between female fecundity and female density. In conclusion, breeding densities higher than 0.75 female dm−2 decreased female fecundity and elicited high mortality, mainly in larvae.  相似文献

1. Small mammal populations were studied in montane evergreen forests in the Nilgiris, southern India, using live-trapping from January 1994 to September 1996. Two sites were selected, one with a single large forest patch and adjoining plantations, and the other with several small forest patches separated by grassland.
2. Nine species were recorded, of which eight were trapped in the forest patches, two in the grasslands and five in plantations. Rattus rattus was the most abundant species (2–36 individuals ha−1) followed by Suncus montanus (0–11 individuals ha−1). Densities of seven other species recorded were very low.
3. Synchrony in various population variables – density, biomass, mean weight, density of adults and adult females, and proportion of adults, adult females and sub-adults – was examined for Rattus rattus populations in the forest patches and plantations. Density and biomass were studied in seven other species recorded at these sites. Spearman's rank order correlation was used as a measure of synchrony between the population variables.
4. Within-site synchrony was higher than between-site synchrony in population characters. Synchrony was also higher between plots within the unfragmented site than they were between plots in the fragmented site. Relatively high synchrony in proportions of adults, adult females and juveniles in the forest patches implied that breeding is probably influenced by climate and food availability, which are seasonal in this habitat.
5. Given the small patch sizes (≈1–10 ha) and low population sizes, asynchrony is likely to be an outcome of demographic and environmental stochasticity, and low dispersal rates may impede establishment of synchrony.  相似文献

Emergence records for three species of Drosophila breeding in the stinkhorn ( Phallus impudicus ) are presented. These are D. phalerata, D. subobscura and D. cameraria . The numbers of stinkhorn present in one woodland (0.114 km2) have been estimated for a two-year period. In 1976, the total number of these fungal breeding sites during the summer was approximately 8000 and in 1977 it was 5300. Utilizing the estimates of breeding site numbers, Drosophila emergence data and estimates of adult survival from laboratory populations, density estimates for D. phalerata and D. subobscura are calculated.  相似文献

The density of Brazilian tapirs ( Tapirus terrestris) was studied in the northeastern part of the Pantanal wetlands of Brazil using two simultaneous and independent methods: (1) systematic camera trapping combined with capture–recapture analysis, with camera traps spaced 1 km apart and distributed over 54 km2; and (2) line-transect sampling using an array of 12 linear transects, from 3.8 to 7.2 km long, covering the principal open and forest habitat types across the entire 1063 km2 SESC Pantanal Reserve. The two methods yielded conservative density estimates of 0.58 ± 0.11 tapirs/km2 (camera trapping) and 0.55 (95% CI 0.30–1.01) tapirs/km2 (line transects). The study suggests that certain Pantanal habitats and sites can sustain relatively high population densities of tapirs when these animals are protected from hunting. Further testing of the camera-trapping methodology as applied to tapirs is required, particularly focusing on extending the survey period. As it represents a relatively rapid method for estimating population density, in comparison to line-transect surveys, and as it generates information simultaneously on multiple species that are conservation priorities, we recommend that camera-trapping surveys be applied more widely across a variety of Pantanal habitats and land-use categories in order to confirm the value of the vast 140,000 km2 wilderness region for this vulnerable species.  相似文献

Axioms developed from island biogeography theory (i.e. species–area relationships, effects of fragmentation and isolation) are central to the development of conservation strategy. Within this context, the 'extinction debt' hypothesis brings into question an often assumed relationship between species richness and present-day spatial habitat structure (i.e. extent, fragmentation), suggesting instead that the richness and composition of biological communities may lag behind spatial changes in habitat. We examined evidence for an extinction debt among epiphytic lichens, a highly diverse biological group of significant conservation concern. Using sites in Scotland, we compared epiphyte species richness in smaller-scale habitat units (aspen stands) to larger-scale woodland structure (extent and fragmentation) measured at two spatial scales (1 km2 and 4 km2) and for two timeframes, modern (1990s to 2000s) and historic (1860s to 1880s). Species richness was positively related to woodland extent and negatively related to woodland fragmentation; however, richness was explained better by historic woodland structure at a 1-km2 scale, than by modern woodland structure. The results indicate: (1) a coupling of stand-scale epiphyte assembly and dynamics of the wider woodland ecosystem, and (2) a significant lag in the response of epiphyte species richness to habitat spatial structure. However, the effect of spatial habitat structure is different between species groups with contrasting traits. The effect of decreasing woodland extent on epiphyte richness is generally more severe for microlichens (comprising a greater number of rare and specialist species) than the more generalist macrolichens.  相似文献

Diet, feeding behaviour and habitat selection of breeding Eurasian Woodcock Scolopax rusticola were studied by radiotracking birds from March to July in two contrasting situations: a 171-ha lowland plantation of Sycamore Acer pseudoplatanus , Beech Fagus sylvaticus and pine Pinus sylvestris / P. nigra in Derbyshire, central England, and an area of c . 900 ha of fragmented, naturally regenerating birch Betula pendula / B. pubescens woodland and hill margin in an upland glen in Angus, northeast Scotland. Earthworms were the most important diet component of adults and chicks in terms of biomass at both sites (50–80%), the rest comprising mainly spiders, harvestmen and beetles. In spring both sexes flew c . 1 km after dusk to feed on fields at night, with up to 94% of nocturnal radiolocations on fields in March, dropping to 18% in July. This behaviour probably reflected seasonal changes in the relative availability of earthworms in fields and woodland. Diurnal home range sizes were similar at both sites and the mean size of 30-day ranges was 62 ± 20 ha (± se), although Woodcock changed locations regularly and areas used for feeding on a daily basis were typically smaller than 1 ha. In the lowland plantation, Sycamore with Dog's Mercury Mercurialis perennis ground cover was highly used relative to availability. In the upland margin study area, the same held for dense sapling-stage birch. These habitats appear to represent a compromise between food availability and protection from avian predators. Recently documented changes in the structure of British woods during the last 30 years, suggestive of reduced management and increased grazing/browsing, are likely to have been detrimental to breeding Woodcock.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Population estimates of Hydrotaea irritans were made by a mark and recapture technique at one site from 1976 to 1978.
2. Population densities of five to 200 thousand ha-1 were found with large-scale immigration and emigration occurring from the site.
3. The dispersal of marked adults from a point of release was rapid and marked flies were captured up to 3 km from the release point.
4. The distribution of flies along a woodland strip was not homogeneous; certain areas appeared to be more attractive and held more flies over a period of time.
5. The importance of the increasing area within which flies may be found as they move outwards from the release point is discussed.  相似文献
