Capsule: Breeding Grey Partridges Perdix perdix on hill farms preferred Soft Rush-infested rough grazing which provided nesting cover and invertebrates for foraging chicks.

Aims: To measure habitat use, nest sites, chick diet and breeding productivity of Grey Partridge on hill farms in north east England.

Methods: We measured actual habitat use of radio-tagged individuals in relation to its availability both within home ranges and over the wider study area. Nesting habitat and breeding productivity data were collected from radio-tagged pairs. Faecal samples from roost sites of broods were collected to assess chick diet.

Results: Grey Partridges preferred rough grazing habitats. Sixty-nine per cent of nests were found in rough grazing with females preferring to nest in tall rushes which provided cover. Chick diet differed between habitats and in relation to brood age. In rough grazing, sawfly larvae were the most numerous item eaten by young (46%) and older broods (27%).

Conclusion: On hill farms, breeding Grey Partridges preferred rough grazings, where broods preferred sawfly larvae. It is important that rush-infested rough grazings are not agriculturally improved and grazing regimes that provide abundant sawfly larvae are practised.  相似文献

The Grey Partridge Perdix perdix is a European Species of Conservation Concern and a priority species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) launched a major programme to help partridge recovery in the UK, built on the GWCT’s Partridge Count Scheme (PCS) and including a demonstration site from 2002. We contrast the national picture of no population change since 1999 from BTO monitoring with a doubling of spring pair density on PCS sites. At the demonstration site, where set‐aside was used for habitat creation, Grey Partridge breeding density increased six‐fold, to 18 pairs/km2, then fell back. The drop coincided with bad weather but also with the disappearance of rotational set‐aside when the set‐aside rate fell to zero, which halved the amount of brood‐rearing habitat. Non‐rotational set‐aside remained unchanged, as did the amount of nesting habitat that it provided. Grey Partridge density was significantly linked to rotational set‐aside, especially wild bird cover, but not to non‐rotational set‐aside. The demonstration project also showed that, with appropriate precautions, it was possible to shoot over 60% of Red‐legged Partridges Alectoris rufa while maintaining Grey Partridge losses below 5%. On PCS sites, the annual change in spring density in recent years differed in relation to neither shooting pressure nor intensity of Red‐legged Partridge releasing. Provision of brood‐rearing habitats and game cover increased with the latter, and probably counteracts the shooting losses of Grey Partridges on Red‐legged Partridge shoots when, as on PCS sites, active measures keep those losses below 20%. Targeted personal advice channelled through the PCS has been fundamental to these successes and must be expanded.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Capsule: An experiment in the field supports the hypothesis that Grey Partridges Perdix perdix purposely expose their first laid eggs in order to test the predation risk at their nest site.

Aims: To test the hypothesis that female Grey Partridges leave first laid eggs uncovered to assess the predation risk at their chosen nesting site.

Methods: Four area-independent experiments with artificial nests were used. Predation risk was estimated by daily nest failure rate. Generalized linear mixed-effects models were used in statistical analysis.

Results: We found that Grey Partridge females could predict nest site safety. At nest sites where the first uncovered egg was depredated, there was a higher predation risk for the whole clutch.

Conclusion: Our data statistically support the hypothesis that leaving the first egg uncovered serves to provide a more conspicuous bait for potential predators and could be a female tactic for better recognizing predation risk at a nesting site. Thus, if the first uncovered egg is depredated, the female may start a new clutch elsewhere without wasting investment in the clutch at a site under high predation risk.  相似文献

Capsule: Double-nesting occurs frequently in Rock Partridges Alectoris graeca living in the southern French Alps.

Aims: To investigate reproductive parameters of a Rock Partridge Alectoris graeca population.

Methods: The reproductive behaviour of 62 radio-tagged birds was monitored during the breeding seasons 2012–16, to record breeding phenology, clutch sizes, hatching success, nest survival and parental care.

Results: Double-nesting behaviour in the Rock Partridge was confirmed for the first time. Participation in incubation was similar for males and females (86% versus 70%). Clutch size was larger for nests incubated by males (11.0?±?1.6 eggs) than by females (9.5?±?1.2). Male nest survival rate (0.37) tended to be lower than female nest survival rate (0.62), although the difference was not significant. No significant difference was detected between male and female hatching success. Nest failures were caused by mammals taking the eggs (78%) or predation of the incubating parent (13%). Some circumstantial evidence suggests that occurrence of double-nesting behaviour could depend on previous winter and spring weather influencing the body condition of females. The reproductive biology of the Rock Partridge contrasts in some breeding traits with Red-legged Partridge and natural partridge hybrids, possibly due to climatic differences between habitats.

Conclusion: Confirmation of double-nesting in Rock Partridges indicates that climatic constraints inherent to its mountain environment do not act as an impediment to this behaviour. Variation in weather conditions between years could influence the annual occurrence of double-nesting.  相似文献

The Grey Partridge Perdix perdix is a sedentary species with a surplus of males in spring populations. It experienced a dramatic decline in Europe primarily due to habitat loss that may have forced the species to modify its dispersal behaviour, a less transparent source of populations threats. We analysed the dispersal patterns of Grey Partridges during pre- and post-breeding periods in two landscapes with different habitat quality in the Czech Republic. Grey Partridges tended to pair off quickly, with most pre-breeding movements executed in pairs. The birds usually dispersed over a few hundred metres indicating that the habitat conditions in a landscape with a carrying capacity of 2–5 pairs/1 km2 was not below the threshold initiating strong dispersal, as observed in extreme habitats and at the northern limits of the species′ distribution range. A few single males that had remained unpaired until April also finally bred. However, the high level of sedentariness of males in a good landscape suggested that males prefer to stay near wintering sites unless habitat sources become limited. Unlike the males, the females dispersed in a wide range of distances with an extensive overlap in both landscapes. Autumn movements did not differ between the sexes, but were longer than the pre-breeding movements and increased in a poor landscape. We conclude that both reduced habitat availability and reduced mating opportunities initialise primarily male-biased breeding dispersal in Grey Partridge populations.  相似文献

The main factors affecting the spring distribution of Red-legged Partridges Alectoris rufa were evaluated in a 1550-km2 landscape of southern Portugal, where different arable systems and hunting regimes were implemented. Partridge surveys were performed in April 1995 along 90, 250-m transects. Partridge locations and a number of environmental variables were incorporated and manipulated in a vector-based GIS. A multivariate logistic model of partridge detection was fitted using forward stepwise selection, and was validated using a jack-knife approach. The probability of detecting Red-legged Partridges within the landscape was positively affected by game management, structural diversity of cover, proportion of olive tree groves and wheat fields along the transects. Conservation implications of the results and research priorities are discussed.  相似文献

In 1995, the UK Government designated the Grey Partridge Perdix perdix as a priority species under its Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP). The Game Conservancy Trust (GCT), nominated as lead partner for the species, launched a programme to help Grey Partridge recovery by (1) raising awareness among the shooting and farming communities, (2) encouraging land managers and local BAP groups to conserve Partridges by setting numerical targets and offering feedback from counts on how to increase numbers, and (3) motivating by example by setting up a site demonstrating management techniques and the increase in Partridge abundance that ensues. Building on past research, we quantify the amount of habitat management required to achieve the BAP targets of halting the decline and achieving population recovery. Using three major GCT databases, (1) the National Gamebag Census, which collates data on shooting bags and gamebird releasing in the UK, (2) the Partridge Count Scheme, which monitors national Partridge density and reproduction, and (3) the Sussex Study, which monitors local Partridge population dynamics over 37 years, we emphasize the importance of good breeding success for increasing densities, review the evidence that management can be successful and evaluate the impact of shooting on Grey Partridge conservation.  相似文献

Brood production rate of Grey Partridges Perdix perdix was studied in three areas in Poland in the years 1986–90, by comparing the number of pairs and the number of family coveys after the breeding period. In the study areas, linear permanent nesting cover was mapped and measured. In these areas the brood production rate declined with increasing spring pair density. A positive effect of the occurrence of nesting cover on brood production rate was found. An increase in the population density mostly occurred through occupying parts of the study area avoided earlier, thus presumably less suitable for Partridges. Pairs occupying these less suitable areas, characterized by less abundant nesting cover, had a lower brood production rate, whereas in the preferred areas this rate did not decline with increasing mean population density.  相似文献

The diet of juvenile chinook salmon and the foods available to them were studied during spring and summer in a large, braided, New Zealand river. During both sampling periods fish and potential prey were collected at dawn and dusk. Analysis showed that in spring the feeding rate increased at dawn, when aquatic taxa comprised the majority of their prey. Prey of terrestrial origin dominated the diet at dusk in summer but formed only about 1% of the diet during spring, when few such prey were available.
During spring the fish selectively preyed upon larger nymphs of the mayflies Deleatidium spp. However, in summer chironomids, other dipterans, and trichopterans were consumed to the exclusion of Deleatidium . Most of the chironomids and trichopterans taken were pupae or emerging adults and it is suggested that this may reflect differences in vulnerability during the diurnal emergence period.  相似文献

Males of many songbird species have peaks of singing activity at dawn and dusk. Singing during those twilight periods can function in territory proclamation, and males are suggested to adjust song output to the level of intruder pressure. We used song playback during the breeding season to simulate intrusions into territories of male Winter Wrens (Troglodytes troglodytes) shortly after dawn. We then compared male singing behaviour during the dawn and dusk chorus before and 1 day after the simulated intrusion. One day after the playback, male Wrens increased their song output before sunrise, which confirms our results from a previous study on dawn singing in autumn territories. At dusk, on the evening following the playback, males slightly increased song output after sunset, but singing activity at dusk was generally very low. We found no significant changes of song output after sunrise, before sunset, and between 2 days of control without playback. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that dawn and dusk singing is important for territory defence in spring. Unlike in autumn, however, increased singing in spring at dawn and dusk could also serve to defend other resources such as fertile mates or to strengthen the pair bond after a territorial challenge. In comparison with the results on autumnal singing, male Wrens started singing earlier at dawn during the breeding season, and they generally sang more songs at dawn and immediately after playback. The increase in absolute numbers of songs sung in the morning after playback seemed greater in spring than in autumn; however, the proportional increase relative to overall song output was similar in both seasons.  相似文献

Twelve juvenile pink shrimp, Penaeus duorarum Burkenroad, were tested individually for 3-day periods in electronic shuttleboxes to determine their diel patterns of locomotor activity, in relation to a natural summer photoperiod. Nocturnal activity was twice that exhibited during the daytime; however, a bimodal pattern was evident with crepuscular peaks occurring at dawn and dusk. The dusk peak was more pronounced, with activity increasing markedly before sunset (indicative of an endogenous circadian rhythm component), and continuing during the initial hours of darkness, gradually declining later during the night with a secondary peak at dawn falling off to minimal activity during daylight. Crepuscular activity (mean of dawn and dusk) was twice the nocturnal average.  相似文献

Abstract

The possible endogenous circadian rhythm in the feeding activity of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was investigated using individual fish previously trained for self‐feeding. Under LD 12:12 conditions, the fish showed a diurnal behaviour, in many cases with a feeding rhythm with two main peaks of food demand at dawn and dusk, with an 8h interval of low feeding activity, and the actograms showed an expected 24 h rhythm. Fish kept under constant conditions (L : L, 15°±0.5°C), showed free‐running feeding activity for about 12 days. Food demands were concentrated at dawn, with a periodogram of 25.3 hour, under continuous environmental conditions. Results showed evidence for the endogenous origin of the circadian rhythm of feeding in this species.  相似文献

Field experiments were carried out to test the effects of cereal pesticides (herbicides, fungicides and insecticides) on chick survival of Grey Partridge Perdix perdix , Red-legged Partridge Alectoris rufa and Pheasant Phasianus colchicus. On fields in experimental plots the outer 6 m of cereal (the headland) were not sprayed with pesticides from 1 January 1984, whereas control plots were fully sprayed. Gamebird brood counts were carried out after the cereal harvest. In addition, nine Grey Partridge broods were radio-tracked for 21 days after hatching (four in sprayed plots and five in unsprayed plots) to determine their movements, home range size and survival in relation to pesticide spraying.
The mean brood size of Grey Partridge and Pheasant was significantly higher on plots where field edges were unsprayed than on fully sprayed control plots. Data for Red-legged Partridge were inconclusive. The survival of individually marked Grey Partridge broods was negatively related to the distance moved between successive nocturnal roost sites. Survival was significantly higher, the distance moved between roost sites significantly shorter and the proportion of home range including headland significantly greater for broods feeding in spring barley fields with unsprayed field edges compared with broods feeding in fully sprayed fields.  相似文献

Background: The rapid decline of semi-natural grasslands in Japan threatens many relic and endemic plant species. There is insufficient knowledge on how the impacts of land-use changes and management of grasslands have been affecting grassland ecosystems and what conservation measures may be taken to conserve as much of the existing plant diversity as possible.

Aim: We assessed the existing management regimes for their suitability for conserving Red Data Book (RDB) species.

Methods: We conducted our study in four districts of Kushima, Kyushu, south-west Japan, with different land-use histories. We compared species richness, plant density and abundance in six grassland types: regularly burnt, regularly mown, paddy levee, roadside, landslip and wetland communities in a total of 289 1 m x 1 m quadrats, recorded in172 grassland patches. Species richness plant density and abundance were analysed with special reference to RDB species under different land use history.

Results: Species richness of grasslands did not differ across different land use histories, yet our analysis showed that the reduced area of grasslands markedly affected the density of RDB species. Grassland types differed in their ability to support RDB species: regularly burnt grasslands were the richest in RDB species and poorest in alien species, followed by regularly mown grasslands, paddy levees, landslip, wetland and roadside communities.

Conclusions: Traditional management regimes, such as regular burning or mowing of grasslands have the best potential for conserving RDB species, and thus should be part of conservation management practices of semi-natural grasslands.  相似文献

Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) and other exotic winter‐active plants can be persistent invaders in native grasslands, growing earlier in the spring than native plants and pre‐empting soil resources. Effective management strategies are needed to reduce their abundance while encouraging the reestablishment of desirable native plants. In this 4‐year study, we investigated whether mowing and seeding with native perennial grasses could limit growth of exotic winter‐actives, and benefit growth of native plants in an invaded grassland in Colorado, United States. We established a split‐plot experiment in October 2008 with 3 mowing treatments: control, spring‐mowed, and spring/summer‐mowed (late spring, mid‐summer, and late summer), and 3 within‐plot seeding treatments: control, added B. tectorum seeds, and added native grass seeds. Cover of plant species and aboveground biomass were measured for 3 years. In March and June of 2010, 2011, and March of 2012, B. tectorum and other winter‐annual grasses were half as abundant in both mowing treatments as in control plots; however, cover of non‐native winter‐active forbs increased 2‐fold in spring‐mowed plots and almost 3‐fold in spring/summer‐mowed plots relative to controls. These patterns remained consistent 1 year after termination of treatments. Native cool‐season grasses were most abundant in spring‐mowed plots, and least abundant in control plots. There was higher cover of native warm‐season grasses in spring/summer‐mowed plots than in control plots in July 2011 and 2012. The timing of management can have strong effects on plant community dynamics in grasslands, and this experiment indicates that adaptive management can target the temporal niche of undesirable invasive species.  相似文献

Capsule Game cover crops in a pastoral region of southwest Scotland supported passerines at more than twice the density found in similar crops in an arable region.

Aims To investigate the use of seed-rich habitats (game cover crops) by farmland passerines in the agricultural grasslands of southwest Scotland relative to the arable east.

Methods Birds were counted in game cover crops and conventional crops on nine farms in Dumfries and Galloway, and Ayrshire, during the winters of 2003/04 and 2004/05. Similar data from eastern Scotland were re-analysed to compare the relative use of the two crop types in the contrasting regions.

Results Passerine densities in game cover crops in southwest Scotland were two orders of magnitude greater than in conventional crops. Furthermore, densities within grassland game cover crops were more than double those in arable areas and densities in grassland conventional crops were just 14% of those in equivalent arable habitats.

Conclusion The significantly greater difference between passerine densities in game cover crops and conventional crops in a grassland versus an arable region of Scotland could not be explained by differences in the bird communities, crop types, boundary habitats, weather, observer effects or survey methods used. We suggest that game cover crops may be more attractive in grassland regions because alternative food sources are rarer than in arable regions.  相似文献

Capsule Perimeter counts underestimate the number of birds using agricultural fields.

Aims To determine the degree to which farmland birds may be undercounted on field surveys and the factors influencing this.

Methods In a study of 96 fields, birds in the field were counted during a walk of the perimeter. Afterwards transects were walked across the field to determine the number of birds missed. Additionally in a national survey we looked at the birds seen in field transects expressed as a proportion of the total seen in the transect and on perimeter counts.

Results To obtain an accurate count of birds on a field requires the use of the whole-area search methodology especially for species such as Grey Partridge Perdix perdix, Snipe Gallinago gallinago, Skylark Alauda arvensis and Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis. However, for a large number of species, including thrushes, flocking finches and buntings, over 90% of individuals can be recorded using the much less time-consuming perimeter count method.

Conclusions Perimeter counts are likely to be reliable for most species but special efforts may be required for a few cryptic species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Capsule: We document previously undescribed nocturnal flight behaviour by Bearded Vultures Gypaetus barbatus using a combination of accelerometer and global positioning system (GPS) information.

Aims: To study the nocturnal flight activity of the Bearded Vulture and determine whether nocturnal flights could be linked to foraging behaviour.

Methods: We used both accelerometer and GPS location data of 11 Bearded Vultures in the Spanish Pyrenees along with 88 carcasses monitored with camera traps.

Results: Over half (55%, n?=?11) of the individuals tracked were recorded flying between 0.7 and 6.1?km on at least 19 different nights, including 37% that occurred when less than 20% of the moon was illuminated. Bearded Vultures displayed feeding activity in only 8.2% of the 146 feeding events existing during the hour after dawn and the hour before dusk.

Conclusions: Our findings suggest that foraging benefits do not explain the nocturnal flights. Disturbances or adverse weather conditions may result in the abandonment of an overnight roosting site. This could also explain why individuals recovered in the field showed impact injuries.  相似文献

In restored grasslands of southern Europe, perennial plants remain highly underrepresented compared with the reference ecosystems. We tested various treatments to reintroduce common perennial plant species (Brachypodium retusum, Poaceae, and Thymus vulgaris, Lamiaceae), which are usually not or poorly reintroduced via soil and hay transfer. Treatments included microenvironmental manipulations (rock cover and plant interactions) and two grazing intensities. Target perennial species were transplanted in 2002 in the reference grassland ecosystem (intact grassland area used as a control) and in two abandoned fields. Survival was assessed in June 2003 and June 2004. Target species shoot and root biomass were measured in June 2004. Grazing greatly reduced the survival and biomass of both target species and its effects were reinforced by summer drought: plants that did not establish well enough during the autumn and spring did not survive summer. The restored rock cover had a mild positive effect, particularly on B. retusum. There were no negative or positive plant neighbor interactions in the steppe, while there was competition in both abandoned fields. Competition was particularly intense in the abandoned melon field, composed of a dense sward of annual grasses (Bromus sp.). In order to reintroduce perennial species to dry grasslands, the ideal combination of treatments is to exclude or reduce grazing during the first year to allow seedlings to establish and to recreate adequate microenvironmental conditions. Reducing competition from arable weeds may help but is not essential in such dry grasslands.  相似文献
