Variation in male lifetime breeding success (LBS) is central to understanding selection, yet it has rarely been measured in natural populations of large mammals. Here, we first describe variation in the opportunity for selection in cohorts of Soay rams (Ovis aries) on the archipelago of St. Kilda, Scotland, that were born during years of varying population density. Variation in LBS is closely coupled with demography, as rams born in years of low density following population crashes enjoy greater LBS than do those born in high-density years. Paradoxically, the opportunity for selection was greatest in the largest cohorts, those born in years of high population density, owing to low juvenile breeding success and overwinter survival. Variation in longevity and the contribution of nonbreeders were the most important components of the total variance in LBS in cohorts born in years of high density, while variation in fecundity was more important in cohorts born in low-density years. The opportunity for sexual selection is thus stronger in cohorts born in low-density years, as many rams in these cohorts survive to compete for mates as adults in subsequent ruts. Variation in population density in the year of birth also influenced the intensity of selection. Individuals born in years of high population density underwent strong natural selection in favor of longer hindlimbs over their first winter. In contrast, in cohorts born in low-density years, there was no natural selection on hindlimb in the first year of life. Longer hindlimbs were associated with increased fecundity over the entire lifetime of individuals born in low-density years. Natural and sexual selection thus act on the same trait in the same direction at different life-history stages in Soay rams, depending on the population density experienced in the year of birth. 相似文献

An increasing population of the mute swan Cygnus olor , was studied from its very establishment in 1976 until 1998. As the number of pairs increased, there was a decline in all production parameters, including the average number of clutches per pair, the average number of broods per clutch, and the average number of fledged young per brood. In a multiple regression analysis covering the whole breeding season, the number of pairs and the average number of clutches per pair explained 71% of the variation in the average number of fledglings per pair. During the brood season, the average number of fledglings per brood was an additionally important parameter in explaining fledgling production. Habitat quality seemed to affect breeding: in places occupied earlier more cygnets fledged from a clutch than in habitats inhabited later. The decreased production of young very likely reflects density-dependent effects on reproduction. This density dependence seems to operate on the breeding grounds, since winter harshness did not affect breeding success. Density-dependent processes started acting already when pairs were beginning to nest, and continued during the brood period. Density dependence has apparently not been detected at the pair stage in earlier studies of bird populations. 相似文献

Within population variation in plant density can affect reproductive success and breeding systems. We examined such effects
in Listera cordata R. Br., a north temperate terrestrial orchid, in a subalpine population in Colorado, USA. Hand pollinations showed that L. cordata was self-compatible as all pollinations produced fruits. Cross-pollinations differed significantly from self-pollinations,
and had a higher number of seeds per capsule and higher % of fertilized ovules. Together they could compensate for the transmission
advantage of self-pollinations. Average number of flowers per inflorescence was 4.2–4.4 and average fruit set was 20.7–23.7%.
By establishing 36 plots with varying plant densities (1, 4, 8 and 16) and emasculating all flowers in target plants of a
set of 20 plots, we estimated density effects on fruit and seed production. Plant density had no effect on the amount of reproduction
except in reduced seed production of highly dispersed plants. Our results suggest that inbreeding depression may be an important
selective factor in L. cordata. Further studies are needed to define its role in the evolution of mating systems in this species.

Sex ratios are subject to strong frequency-dependent selection regulated by the mating system and the relative male versus female investment. In androdioecious plant populations, where males co-occur with hermaphrodites, the sex ratio depends on the rate of self-fertilization by hermaphrodites and on the relative pollen production of males versus hermaphrodites. Here, we report evolutionary changes in the sex ratio from experimental mating arrays of the androdioecious plant Mercurialis annua. We found that the progeny sex ratio depended strongly on density, with fewer males in the progeny of plants grown under low density. This occurred in part because of a plastic adjustment in pollen production by hermaphrodites, which produced more pollen when grown at low density than at high density. Our results provide support for the prediction that environmental conditions govern sex ratios through their effects on the relative fertility of unisexual versus hermaphrodite individuals. 相似文献

Density-dependent regulation of abundance is fundamentally important in the dynamics of most animal populations. Density effects, however, have rarely been quantified in natural populations, so population models typically have a large uncertainty in their predictions. We used models generated from time series analysis to explore the form and strength of density-dependence in several natural rotifer populations. Population growth rate (r) decreased linearly or non-linearly with increased population density, depending on the rotifer species. Density effects in natural populations reduced r to 0 at densities of 1–10 l–1 for 8 of the 9 rotifer species investigated. The sensitivities of these species to density effects appeared normally distributed, with a mean r=0 density of 2.3 l–1 and a standard deviation of 1.9. Brachionus rotundiformis was the outlier with 10–100× higher density tolerance. Density effects in laboratory rotifer populations reduced r to 0 at population densities of 10–100 ml–1, which is 104 higher than densities in natural populations. Density effects in laboratory populations are due to food limitation, autotoxicity or to their combined effects. Experiments with B. rotundiformis demonstrated the absence of autotoxicity at densities as high as 865 ml–1, a much higher density than observed in natural populations. It is, therefore, likely that food limitation rather than autotoxicity plays a major role in regulating natural rotifer populations. 相似文献

Historically, the olive ridley arribada at Playa Nancite, Costa Rica, was one of the largest olive ridley arribadas in the eastern Pacific with 70,000 nesting females in a year. Recently the Nancite arribada drastically declined. We hypothesized that the population decline at Playa Nancite could have been due to low hatching success as a result of the high density of nests on the beach, such that recruitment to the population was insufficient to balance losses. To test this hypothesis, we examined density-dependent effects on hatching success and their underlying mechanisms by experimentally manipulating nest densities in experimental plots on the nesting beach. We set up four nest-density treatments in five experimental blocks. We measured effects of density on hatching success, CO(2) and O(2) concentrations and temperature both within nests and in sand adjacent to nests frequently during incubation. Experimental nest densities affected hatching success with the highest density having the lowest hatching success. Higher nest density led to lower O(2) levels and higher CO(2) levels in the nest with greater changes in the latter part of the incubation. Highest temperatures occurred in high-density areas. Temperatures were lower in sand surrounding the nest than in the nest. Effects of density on temperature, CO(2) and O(2) were confirmed at a naturally high-density nesting beach, Playa La Flor, Nicaragua. Long-term failure in production of hatchlings due to historic high densities may have contributed to the decline of arribadas on Playa Nancite. Thus, density-dependent population control would have operated at the embryonic life stage in this population of olive ridley turtles. 相似文献

Using data on flocks of flamingos in Britain and Ireland, the relationship between flock size and breeding in captive flamingos was examined. Breeding flamingo flocks were significantly larger than nonbreeding flocks and larger flocks bred more frequently than smaller flocks. All Chilean flocks containing more than 40 birds have bred successfully; however, one flock of only 4 Chilean Flamingos has reared at least one chick. A decline in cell surface gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase specific activity was previously observed to be concomitant with C6 glial cell proliferation. To elucidate the underlying factor(s) mediating gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase down-regulation, the effects of C6 cell density and culture conditions on cell surface transpeptidase activity levels were investigated. After 24 h of culture, the transpeptidase specific activities were inversely related to the initial plating densities. The lower-density cultures showed an induction within 24 h of plating. As the cultures proliferated, the specific transpeptidase activities declined to a common low level at post-confluency. The gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase down-regulation was unrelated to cell growth rate and was most pronounced during logarithmic proliferation. Induction and down-regulation of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase activity at low cell densities were not a result of trypsinization. Supplementation of low-density cultures with conditioned medium, use of matrix-coated wells, or periodic replacement of growth media to prevent conditioning had minor effects on the decline of cell surface activity. Kinetic analysis showed that the Michaelis constants and the reaction mechanism were unaltered by cell density, indicating that down-regulation was not due to allosteric factors or an alteration in enzyme character. A reduction in the maximal velocity of cell surface transpeptidation at higher cell densities suggested that gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase down-regulation is related to the concentration of enzyme at the cell surface. Immunocytochemical localization of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase demonstrated that gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase antigen levels decrease as C6 cell density increases. These results led us to propose that cell-cell contact stimulates the disappearance of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase from the surface of cultured C6 glial cells. 相似文献

Summary It has been shown in clonal perennial herbs that shoot natality decreases, and shoot mortality increases, in stands of increasing density. In a two-year garden experiment, we have tested Hutchings' (1979) hypothesis that these responses are the result of physiological integration, i.e. the exchange of resources and growth substances between shoots of a single clone. Dense monocultures of two rhizomatous graminoids, Brachypodium pinnatum and Carex flacca, were created that differed more than 10-fold in the density of clones (genets), but that had similar densities of shoots. A more effective shoot density control was expected in stands with the smaller clone densities (larger clones) due to more extensive clonal connections. Shoot turnover was evaluated by counting living and dead shoots at different times. In the summer of the second year, when shoot densities and stand structure were similar between treatments, shoot natality (the number of shoots born per plot) and shoot mortality (the number of shoots that died per plot) were usually unrelated to clone density in either species. If there was a significant treatment effect, it could be attributed to (small) differences in shoot density. Over the whole range of shoot densities, natality was negatively density-dependent. The number of shoots that died in a given growth period was proportional to the number of shoots present, suggesting that mortality rates were density independent. In Carex, however, there were some indications that mortality rate increased with increasing density. Our study confirms that clonal herbaceous species can effectively prevent an overproduction of shoots, but in contrast to Hutchings' (1979) propositions, we found no evidence that physiological integration may be the responsible mechanism. Summary This study documents size- and density-dependent growth (positive and negative), in the sea urchin Diadema antillarum. In the summer of 1983, an inverse relationship was found between Diadema test diameter and population density at seven sites in Lameshur Bay, St. John, United States Virgin Islands. The regression of this relationship improved when test diameter was plotted against density per unit grazing area. A field experiment demonstrated that 1) Diadema has the ability to reduce skeletal body size, and 2) direction (growth or shrinkage) and rate of growth can be predicted accurately based on the urchin's body size and population density. The ability to adjust body size as density fluctuates may allow Diadema to persist when density increases, by shrinking and reducing metabolic costs, and to take advantage of decreases in density, by increasing in size and fecundity. 相似文献

We describe, for the first time, nest-cavities selected by the Mediterranean endemic yelkouan shearwater Puffinus yelkouan on French islands, comparing it with the sympatric Cory's shearwater Calonectris diomedea. By monitoring 179 suitable cavities during four years, we show that yelkouan shearwaters select deeper cavities and with more winding tunnels than those selected by Cory's shearwaters or unoccupied cavities. Logistic regression modelling indicates that cavities with nest-like characteristics are not limited. We show that breeding success is enhanced in deeper cavities, with winding tunnels and higher block covers. We do not find any apparent competition between the two shearwater species. 相似文献

Capsule Population trends for Chaffinch on farmland are unlikely to be explained by their preference for non-crop habitats alone. Aims To investigate the importance of non-cropped habitats for Chaffinch territory distribution, breeding success and foraging habitat selection in Scottish farmland. Methods Territory distribution, nesting success and foraging behaviour of adults feeding chicks at the nest were recorded and related to habitat composition on two Scottish lowland farms. Results Higher Chaffinch territory densities were associated with the presence of hedgerows, trees and grass leys, whereas lower densities were found adjacent to winter Barley. Nests were predominantly located in conifer trees and hedgerows. Trees were selected preferentially for foraging. Poor breeding success was detected in nests associated with cereal crops and wider field margins. Farmland in Scotland supported much lower territory densities than in England. Conclusion Chaffinches rely predominantly on non-cropped habitats for territory establishment, nesting and foraging habitats. Differences in habitat composition between England and Scotland may explain differences in territory densities. However, the Chaffinch's preference for non-crop habitats is unlikely to explain its population trends alone. Immigration from other habitats and/or a decrease in inter-specific competition for resources may also have contributed to the increase in the national farmland Chaffinch population. 相似文献

Cooperative breeding, where some individuals help to raise offspring that are not their own, is a relatively rare social system in birds. We studied the breeding biology of a declining cooperative breeder, the grey-crowned babbler Pomatostomus temporalis , with the aim of isolating the social factors that affect its reproductive success. Most breeding pairs were assisted by philopatric offspring, although pairs could breed successfully without helpers. Females laid up to four clutches (usually three eggs per clutch) per season. Male (but not female) helpers increased the number of young fledged from individual nests and the likelihood of re-nesting, resulting in higher seasonal fledgling production. Helper effects on brood size and fledgling production were greater in the second year of the study, which was also characterized by higher nest failure. This suggests that helpers enhance reproduction more in poor conditions. Our study demonstrates the interacting effects of social and ecological factors on reproductive success, and that retention of offspring is not always beneficial for the breeders in cooperative species. 相似文献

The breeding records from 22Callithrix jacchus jacchus females aged 13–23 months were examined. It was evident that females aged more than 18 months when first paired bred sooner, as did females paired with sexually experienced males. A detailed behavioral investigation of nine newly formed pairs was carried out for 10 weeks. Males showed more following, sniffing, tail-raised presents, and affectional behavior than their mates, while females showed more soliciting. Only females gave the submissive vocalization (ngÄ). This shows that there is a degree of sexual dimorphism in the behavior of this monogamous monkey. Four of the nine pairs failed to conceive within 12 weeks of pairing;the females of these pairs behaved more submissively than successful breeders, showing more ngÄ and less bristling and sexual behavior. In all cases the four females were housed in close proximity to dominant relatives and this was considered to be a significant factor. 相似文献
