Early environment can have a major impact on development, with family life known to play an important role. Longitudinal studies can therefore help increase our understanding of variance in cognitive abilities in young animals, as well as over time. We followed 22 marmosets (11 male and 11 female) from infancy through to early adolescence. At 3 months old, the marmosets were trained to reliably touch a rewarded stimulus. At 5 months, behavior was observed within the natal group. At 9 months, the marmosets were given a visual discrimination task to assess learning ability. Mann–Whitney U tests found no sex or family size differences in number of errors at 3 or 9 months. While no significant relationships were found between behavior in the family and learning at 3 months, significant negative correlations were found between duration spent in locomotion and learning errors (p = .05), as well as between frequency of calm vocalizations and learning errors (p = .001) at 9 months. A U-shape curve was found between amount of social play and learning at 9 months. Positive family interactions, including moderate amounts of play, as well as calm individual behavior, may therefore be important in learning. This study sheds light on cognitive development in much younger marmosets than previously studied, and helps increase understanding of how individual differences in learning may arise.  相似文献

Incremental learning, in which new knowledge is acquired gradually through trial and error, can be distinguished from one-shot learning, in which the brain learns rapidly from only a single pairing of a stimulus and a consequence. Very little is known about how the brain transitions between these two fundamentally different forms of learning. Here we test a computational hypothesis that uncertainty about the causal relationship between a stimulus and an outcome induces rapid changes in the rate of learning, which in turn mediates the transition between incremental and one-shot learning. By using a novel behavioral task in combination with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from human volunteers, we found evidence implicating the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex and hippocampus in this process. The hippocampus was selectively “switched” on when one-shot learning was predicted to occur, while the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex was found to encode uncertainty about the causal association, exhibiting increased coupling with the hippocampus for high-learning rates, suggesting this region may act as a “switch,” turning on and off one-shot learning as required.  相似文献

Songbirds are an important model system for the study of the neurological bases of song learning, but variation in song learning accuracy and adult song complexity remains poorly understood. Current models of sexual selection predict that signals such as song must be costly to develop or maintain to constitute honest indicators of male quality. It has been proposed that reductions of nestling condition during song development might limit the expression of song learning. Adult song could thus act as an indicator of early stress as only males that enjoy good condition during development could learn accurately and sing long songs or large repertoires. We tested this hypothesis in the zebra finch by modifying early condition through cross-fostering chicks to small, medium, and large broods. Song learning was very accurate and was found to reflect very closely tutor song characteristics and to depend on the number of males in the tutoring group. Although the brood size manipulation strongly affected several measures of nestling condition and adult biometry, we found no relationship between early condition and song learning scores or song characteristics. Similarly, brain mass and high vocal center (HVC), robust nucleus of the arcopallium (RA), and lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior nidopallium (LMAN) volumes did not covary with nestling condition and growth measurements. We found no significant relationship between song repertoire size and HVC and RA volumes, although there was a nonsignificant trend for HVC to increase with increasing proportion of learnt elements in a song. In conclusion, the results provide no evidence for song learning to be limited by nestling condition during the period of nutritional dependence from the parents in this species.  相似文献

We recently found that older adults show reduced learning rates when learning a new pattern of coordinated rhythmic movement. The purpose of this study was to extend that finding by examining the performance of all ages across the lifespan from the 20 s through to the 80 s to determine how learning rates change with age. We tested whether adults could learn to produce a novel coordinated rhythmic movement (90° relative phase) in a visually guided unimanual task. We determined learning rates to quantify changes in learning with age and to determine at what ages the changes occur. We found, as before, that learning rates of participants in their 70 s and 80 s were half those of participants in their 20 s. We also found a gradual slow decline in learning rate with age until approximately age 50, when there was a sudden drop to a reduced learning rate for the 60 though 80 year olds. We discuss possible causes for the “50 s cliff” in perceptuo-motor learning rates and suggest that age related deficits in perception of complex motions may be the key to understanding this result.  相似文献

In order to test the role of mu and kappa opioid receptors (Mu opioid receptor (MOR) and Kappa opioid receptor (KOR)) in hippocampal-dependent spatial learning, we analyzed genetically engineered null mutant mice missing the functional MOR or KOR gene. Compared to wild-type mice, the homozygous MOR null mutants exhibited an impairment in the ultimate level of spatial learning as shown in two distinct tasks, the 8-arm radial-maze and the Morris water-maze. Control behaviors were normal. The learning impairment could be associated with the impairment we found in the maintenance of long-term potentiation in mossy fibers in CA3. In comparison, there was no impairment in spatial learning in our KOR mutants or in mossy fibers (mf) in CA3 region long-term potentiation (LTP). Our work suggests that the MOR may play a positive role in learning and memory by increasing LTP in CA3 neurons.  相似文献

Focal and impulse activity of neurones, recorded in pairs with one microelectrode, was studied in the field 18 of cat visual cortex, during learning of visual differentiation of shaped stimuli--light strips with different orientation one towards the other. Differences were found between functional properties of neighbouring visual neurones before learning and in learning dynamics. The local cerebral glucose utilization (LCGU) was measured in 63 different cortical areas and nuclei of the telencephalon, diencephalon and rhombencephalon of young adult (3 to 4-month-old) rats and of 27-month-old Wistar rats, in which learning impairments had been proven by a water maze test. The LCGU was determined by [14C]2-deoxyglucose autoradiography. In the old rats the mean LCGU of all brain regions was significantly reduced by about 10% compared with the young control group; the mean LCGU was 74.2 mumol glucose/(100 g x min) in the young and 66.7 in the old rats. Different degrees of LCGU decrease were found in the different regions. Most of the brain regions with significantly reduced LCGU values in the aged, learning impaired rats were associated with auditory and visual functions, the dopaminergic system, and structures known to be involved in learning and memory processes. Therefore, the regional pattern of LCGU reduction found in the aged, learning impaired rats did not resemble any known pattern found after lesions of a single transmitter system or systemic administration of transmitter agonists or antagonists.  相似文献

The foraging behaviour of bumble bees is well documented for nectar and/or pollen gathering, but little is known about the learning processes underlying such behaviour. We report olfactory conditioning in worker bumble bees Bombus terrestris L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) obtained under laboratory conditions on restrained individuals. The protocol was adapted from the proboscis extension conditioning previously described in the honey bee Apis mellifera L. Bumble bees were found to be able to learn a pure odorant when it was presented in paired association with a sugar reward, but not when odour and reward were presented in an explicitly unpaired procedure. This suggests an associative basis for this olfactory learning. Bumble bees showed similar conditioning abilities when stimulated with two different floral odours. An effect of the sugar reward concentration on the learning performances was found.  相似文献

Four different neural network algorithms, binary adaptive resonance theory (ART1), self-organizing map, learning vector quantization and back-propagation, were compared in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis with different parameter groups. The results show that supervised learning algorithms learning vector quantization and back-propagation were better than unsupervised algorithms in this medical decision making problem. The best results were obtained with the learning vector quantization. The self-organizing map algorithm showed good specificity, but this was in conjunction with lower sensitivity. The best parameter group was found to be the clinical signs. It seems beneficial to design a decision support system which uses these methods in the decision making process.  相似文献

We investigated whether lateral masking in the near-periphery, due to inhibitory lateral interactions at an early level of central visual processing, could be weakened by perceptual learning and whether learning transferred to an untrained, higher-level lateral masking known as crowding. The trained task was contrast detection of a Gabor target presented in the near periphery (4°) in the presence of co-oriented and co-aligned high contrast Gabor flankers, which featured different target-to-flankers separations along the vertical axis that varied from 2λ to 8λ. We found both suppressive and facilitatory lateral interactions at target-to-flankers distances (2λ - 4λ and 8λ, respectively) that were larger than those found in the fovea. Training reduces suppression but does not increase facilitation. Most importantly, we found that learning reduces crowding and improves contrast sensitivity, but has no effect on visual acuity (VA). These results suggest a different pattern of connectivity in the periphery with respect to the fovea as well as a different modulation of this connectivity via perceptual learning that not only reduces low-level lateral masking but also reduces crowding. These results have important implications for the rehabilitation of low-vision patients who must use peripheral vision to perform tasks, such as reading and refined figure-ground segmentation, which normal sighted subjects perform in the fovea.  相似文献

The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, is a serious pest of fruits and vegetables. Methyl eugenol (ME), a male attractant, is used to against this fly by mass trapping. Control effect may be influenced by learning, which could modify the olfactory response of the fly to this attractant. To collect the behavioral evidence, studies on the capability of this fly for olfactory learning are necessary. We investigated olfactory learning in male flies with a classical olfactory conditioning procedure using restrained individuals under laboratory conditions. The acquisition of the proboscis extension reflex was used as the criterion for conditioning. A high conditioned response level was found in oriental fruit flies when an odor was presented in paired association with a sucrose reward but not when the odor and sucrose were presented unpaired. We also found that the conditioning performance was influenced by the odor concentration, intertrial interval, and starvation time. A slight sensitization elicited by imbibing sucrose was observed. These results indicate that oriental fruit flies have a high capacity to form an olfactory memory as a result of classical conditioning.  相似文献

Vital investigation of genome activity and its role in mechanisms of long-term synaptic plasticity formation were studied in LP11 neuron (command neurone of defence behaviour) during sensitisation (simple form of learning) in semi-intact preparation of snail Helix lucorum. Genome activity was investigate by means of specific fluorescent dye SYTO 16 and image analysis system. It was found that application of sensitizing stimulation (10% quinine solution) onto the snail head initiate two-phase changes in neural responses evoked by tactile or chemical stimulation. Depression of neural responses was obtained during short-term phase (during 1 hour after sensitization) and facilitation of neural responses--during long-term phases (over 1 hour). At the same time (15-20 min after learning), a significant increase in SYTO 16 fluorescent level was found in nucleus site LP11 neurone. Initial SYTO 16 fluorescence level was registered in 4-5 hours after sensitization. If the sensitization was produced during actinomycin D application (inhibitor of RNA synthesis, 20 microM) then facilitation of neural responses evoked by sensory stimulation were suppressed during long-term phase of sensitization and was the same as in control sensitized snails during short-term phase of learning. Increase in SYTO 16 fluorescence level in nucleus region site of LP11 neurone was completely prevented in sensitization during actinomycin D application. If actinomycin D was applied 30 min after sensitization (1 hour after first sensitizing stimulation) then synaptic facilitation and fluorescent dynamics was the same as in control sensitized snails. Our experimental data showed that nociceptive sensitization development was followed by quick (15-20 min) DNA activation and long-term synaptic facilitation (1 hour after sensitization), while induction of the processes was suppressed by inhibitor of RNA synthesis during short time interval (during 1 hour of learning).  相似文献

Qualitative dysnutrition (pure bottle-feeding) as well as quantitative dysnutrition (overnutrition as well as undernutrition) during the first trimenon of postnatal life was found to lead to long-lasting mental, psychic and/or physical ill-effects in the human. Females who were completely bottlefed during neonatal life showed significantly decreased school achievements as well as significantly decreased learning capacity and social adaptability at 16 years of age as compared to females who were purely breastfed or breast- plus bottlefed in neonatal life. Males who were artificially overfed during neonatal life also showed significantly decreased school achievements and significantly decreased learning capacity in adolescence as compared to males with normal weight development in neonatal life.  相似文献

Circuit modification associated with learning and memory involves multiple events, including the addition and remotion of newborn cells trough adulthood. Adult neurogenesis and gliogenesis were mainly described in models of voluntary exercise, enriched environments, spatial learning and memory task; nevertheless, it is unknown whether it is a common mechanism among different learning paradigms, like reward dependent tasks. Therefore, we evaluated cell proliferation, neurogenesis, astrogliogenesis, survival and neuronal maturation in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the hippocampus (HIPP) during learning an operant conditioning task. This was performed by using endogenous markers of cell proliferation, and a bromodeoxiuridine (BrdU) injection schedule in two different phases of learning. Learning an operant conditioning is divided in two phases: a first phase when animals were considered incompletely trained (IT, animals that were learning the task) when they performed between 50% and 65% of the responses, and a second phase when animals were considered trained (Tr, animals that completely learned the task) when they reached 100% of the responses with a latency time lower than 5 seconds. We found that learning an operant conditioning task promoted cell proliferation in both phases of learning in the mPFC and HIPP. Additionally, the results presented showed that astrogliogenesis was induced in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in both phases, however, the first phase promoted survival of these new born astrocytes. On the other hand, an increased number of new born immature neurons was observed in the HIPP only in the first phase of learning, whereas, decreased values were observed in the second phase. Finally, we found that neuronal maturation was induced only during the first phase. This study shows for the first time that learning a reward-dependent task, like the operant conditioning, promotes neurogenesis, astrogliogenesis, survival and neuronal maturation depending on the learning phase in the mPFC-HIPP circuit.  相似文献

The striatum of the basal ganglia is considered a key structure in the learning circuitry of the brain. To analyze neural signals that underlie striatal plasticity, we recorded from an identifiable class of striatal interneurons as macaque monkeys underwent training in a range of conditioning and non-associative learning paradigms, and recorded eyeblink electromyographs as the measure of behavioral response. We found that the responses of these striatal interneurons were modifiable under all training conditions and that their population responses were tightly correlated with the probability that a given stimulus would evoke a behavioral response. Such a network signal, proportional to current response probability, could be crucial to the learning and decision functions of the basal ganglia.  相似文献

In amygdala-kindled rats a deficit in learning brightness discrimination was found. We concluded that this result provides a reliable basis for creating an animal model of cognitive dysfunctions in epileptics. Recently, a des-tyrosine D-amino acid substituted derivative of bovine beta-casein(1-5) was reported to exhibit anticonvulsant as well as antidepressant activity. Therefore, we tested the effect of this peptide on kindled seizures and the learning deficit after kindling. It was found that the peptide suppressed the duration of seizures whereas seizure severity was not influenced. Furthermore, the learning performance of peptide-treated rats was significantly higher than that of kindled controls.  相似文献

Mu opioid receptor (MOR), which plays key roles in analgesia and also has effects on learning and memory, was reported to distribute abundantly in the patches of the neostriatum. The marginal division (MrD) of the neostriatum, which located at the caudomedial border of the neostriatum, was found to stain for enkephalin and substance P immunoreactivities and this region was found to be involved in learning and memory in our previous study. Significant differences between strains were found for open field activity and emotionality, exploratory activity, initial reaction to shock, conditioned avoidance learning, and weight for three inbred strains (Balb/c, C57Bl and C3H), such that the heaviest strain (Balb/c) was the least active and most emotional in the open field, gave the lowest score for exploratory activity and longest reaction to shock times, and was the poorest at conditioned avoidance learning.The hybrids from crosses with C57Bl tended more towards complete dominance and overdominance than did the Balb/c × C3H hybrid, probably because the Balb/c and C3H strains have some common ancestry.Heterosis was most marked for traits involving exploration or learning. Variability of the hybrids for these traits was often lower than the parents, i.e. they showed behavioural homeostasis. For other traits variability of the hybrids tended towards the parent whose genotype was dominant for the trait.Of the non-genetic factors studied, age and litter size were found to have the greatest effect on the behavioural traits. Parity was found only to affect weight. Sex differences were found for weight and emotionality.  相似文献
