Around two-and-a-half million years ago, some hominid populations in Africa began to modify stones and bones in a manner that can be recognized by prehistorians as artifacts, and, by definition, produced the earliest identifiable archaeological record. It is likely that earlier hominid groups also may have had relatively rich tool-using behavioral repertoires similar to that seen in modern chimpanzees (McGrew, 1992), such tools may have been made of perishable materials or minimally modified and thus difficult to identify. This review will focus on the earliest archaeological traces and the spread of hominids out of Africa and into Eurasia.  相似文献

Extensive sampling of strawberry plants in everbearing and June-bearing strawberry plantations and on potted plants showed that different species of mites were spatially separated. Of the two phytophagous species recorded, Tetranychus urticae was most abundant on old leaves and Phytonemus pallidus on folded leaves and flower/fruit clusters. Predatory phytoseiid mites were found on all plant parts but different species were spatially separated; Neoseiulus cucumeris and N. aurescens were found mostly on folded leaves and clusters, and N. californicus and Phytoseiulus persimilis on old and medium aged leaves. No Typhlodromus pyri were found in the field plantations. These patterns of distribution did not change over sampling dates in summer and early autumn. An understanding of this within-plant zonation of mite species is important when studying predator–prey interactions and when designing sampling strategies for strawberry. A programme to sample the entire mite system on strawberry should be stratified to include all the above mentioned parts of the plant. Different sampling protocols, as appropriate, are required for sampling different pest species and their associated predators.  相似文献

Fungi in bathwater and sludge of bathroom drainpipes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Samples of bathwater from 14 homes and 22 public bathhouses and sludge in drainpipes from 19 house-hold bathrooms were plated out onto potato dextrose agar supplemented with chloramphenicol. Several media were used to study colony morphology of the isolates and the thermotolerance and alkaline tolerance of each isolate were examined.Eleven sludge samples produced 12 isolates of Exophiala jeanselmei, 2 of E. dermatitidis and 1 of E. moniliae. Five household bathwater samples produced 2 isolates of E. jeanselmei, 4 of E. dermatitidis and 1 of E. alcalophila. One isolate of E. jeanselmei, 2 of E. dermatitidis, 3 of E. moniliae and 2 of unidentified Exophiala species were recovered from 6 samples of the bathwater dissolving Chinese medicine in the bathtubs of public bathhouses. One isolate of E. jeanselmei was recovered from the 15 samples of bathwater from public bathhouses. Bathwater and sludge in bathroom drainpipes may be an important habitat of Exophiala species.  相似文献

Cereals and cereal- derived products constitute the base of human and animal feeding in South American countries. This review attempts to give an overview of the ochratoxin A (OTA) occurrence and potential sources of OTA contamination in those products. The environmental conditions as humidity and temperature in the colonization of the substrates by Aspergillus section Nigri isolated from corn kernels were also discussed. The available information on the ochratoxigenic mycoflora and OTA presence in corn, corn based food and feed is limited. Only few surveys have been carried out in Argentina, Ecuador and Brazil; which showed that Aspergillus niger aggregate and A. ochraceus species would be the main source of OTA. It’s possible to emphasize that, the species A. carbonarius has not been isolated from these substrates and Penicillium verrucosum was isolated only from pig feeds of Argentinean samples in low percentage. Studies about the ecophysiology of ochratoxigenic fungi and OTA occurrence are in progress in Latin America to reduce the impact of this toxin in the food chain. Carina E. Magnoli, Stella M. The effect of inoculating seedlings of Eucalyptus grandis, Allocasuarina littoralis and Casuarina equisetifolia with two isolates of Pisolithus and two isolates of Scleroderma from under eucalypts was examined in a glasshouse trial. Ectomycorrhizas formed extensively on Eucalyptus (23–46% fine roots ectomycorrhizal) and Allocasuarina (18–51% fine roots ectomycorrhizal). On Casuarina, the fungi were either unable to colonize the rhizosphere (one isolate of Pisolithus), or sheathed roots, resembling ectomycorrhizas, formed on 1–2% of the fine roots. Colonization of roots by one isolate of Scleroderma resulted in the death of Casuarina seedlings. Inoculation with fungi increased shoot dry weight by up to a factor of 32 (Eucalyptus), 4 (Allocasuarina) and 3 (Casuarina). Ectomycorrhizas formed in associations with Eucalyptus and Allocasuarina had fully differentiated mantles and Hartig nets in which the host and fungal cells were linked by an extensive fibrillar matrix. Sheathed roots in Casuarina lacked a Hartig net, and the epidermis showed a hypersensitive reaction resulting in wall thickening and cell death. The sheaths are described as mantles since the density and arrangement of the hyphae in the sheaths was similar to that in mantles of the eucalypt ectomycorrhizas. The intercellular carbohydrate matrix was not produced in the Casuarina mantle in association with Pisolithus, hence the mantle was not cemented to the root. These structures differ from poorly compatible associations described previously for Pisolithus and Eucalyptus. The anatomical data indicate that ectomycorrhizal assessment based on surface morphological features may be misleading in ecological studies because compatible and incompatible associations may not be distinguishable.  相似文献

Campylobacter, salmonella and chlamydia in free-living birds of Croatia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis and avian chlamydiosis are zoonotic diseases in which birds have been suggested to play an important role as reservoirs. We have investigated the prevalence of Campylobacter and Salmonella spp. and Chlamydophila sp. in 107 free-living birds belonging to 25 species from 13 families from Croatia in order to examine the natural infections caused by these agents. Campylobacter jejuni-like organisms were isolated from 2 of 107 free-living bird species examined (1.9%). Salmonella was isolated from 8 fresh fecal specimens from free-living bird species (7.4%). These isolates were identified as S. typhimurium in 4 (3.7%), and S. enteriditis in 4 (3.7%) free-living birds. These samples originated from feral pigeons (Columba livia domesticus; n=14; 28.6%), rook (Corvus frugilegus; n=13; 15.4%), buzzard (Buteo buteo; n=12; 16.7%), black-headed gull (Larus ridibundus; n=8; 12.5%) and tawny owl (Strix aluco; n=8; 12.5%). The presence of Chlamydophila sp. was not detected in the free-living birds examined during this study. Epidemiological aspects and possible significance of the examined birds as a source of infections for domestic animals and humans are discussed.  相似文献

As a step towards setting conservation priorities for declining moist forests in southeast Kenya, we assessed for small mammal diversity and distribution. These habitats are under severe pressure due to increased demand an forests products and arable land, yet there is a dearth of information an impacts an biodiversity. Over an eight-month period, we used a combination of box and pitfall traps with drift fences to study 13 forest fragments in five geographic areas ranging between 3°28′−4°10′ S and 38°28′−39°2b′ E. We recorded 12 species including 10 soricids and two macroscelids in 31440 trap nights. Diversity estimates using rarefaction method indicate a species richness of 12, consistent with our collection. There were six unique species, each limited in distribution to one forest fragment. Our record of Crocidura cf. selina in Kyulu Hills is the first outside Mabira forest in Uganda where it is considered endemic and endangered. We also report the first record of C. fuscomurina in Kenya, white those of C. Luna and Suncus megalura are first in the southeast of the country. By providing new ranges to four species, our study is of significance to the biogeography and conservation of forest small mammals in the region.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to assess whether agroforestry species have the ability to acquire P from pools unavailable to maize. Tithonia diversifolia(Hemsley) A. Gray, Tephrosia vogelii Hook f., Zea mays and Lupinus albusL. were grown in rhizopots and pH change and depletion of inorganic and organic P pools measured in the rhizosphere. Plants were harvested at the same growth stage, after 56 days for maize and white lupin and 70 days for tithonia and tephrosia, and the rhizosphere sampled. The rhizosphere was acidified by tithonia (pH change –0.3 units to pH 4.8) and lupins (–0.2 units to 4.9), alkalinised by tephrosia (+0.4 units to pH 5.4), and remained unchanged with maize growth. Concurrent with acidification in the rhizosphere of tithonia there was a decline in resin-P (0.8 g P g–1). However, there was also a decline in NaOH extractable inorganic P (NaOH-Pi) (5.6 g P g–1 at the root surface) and organic P pools (NaOH-Po) (15.4 g P g–1 at 1.5 mm from the root), which would not be expected without specific P acquisition mechanisms. Alkalinisation of tephrosia rhizosphere was accompanied by changes in all measured pools, although the large depletion of organic P (21.6 g P g–1 at 5 mm from the root) suggests that mineralisation, as well as desorption of organic P, was stimulated. The size of changes of both pH and P pools varied with distance away from the rhizoplane. Decline of more recalcitrant P pools with the growth of the agroforestry species contrasted with the effect of maize growth, which was negligible on resin-P and NaOH-Pi, but led to an accumulation of P as NaOH-Po (14.2 g P g–1 at 5 mm from the root). Overall the depletion of recalcitrant P pools, particularly Po, suggests that the growth of tithonia and tephrosia enhance desorption and dissolution of P, while also enhancing organic P mineralisation. Both species appear to have potential for agroforestry technologies designed to enhance the availability of P to crops, at least in the short term.  相似文献

River oases at the southern fringe of the Taklamakan desert in NW China are surrounded by belts of spontaneous vegetation that protect the oases from sand drift. As an important source of forage, fuel and construction wood, this foreland vegetation is also a component part of the agricultural system of the oases but has been, and still is, destroyed through overuse. Within a broader study that aimed to provide a basis for a sustainable management of this foreland vegetation, biomass and production were studied in four vegetation types dominated either by Alhagi sparsifolia, Calligonum caput-medusae, Populus euphratica, or Tamarix ramosissima that were thought to occur under different regimes of natural flooding in the foreland of Qira (Cele) oasis, Xinjiang, NW China. Shoot biomass components were closely correlated to basal area (Calligonum, Populus, Tamarix) or shrub volume and projection area (Alhagi), enabling non-destructive estimation of stand biomass from shoot diameters or shrub dimensions with sufficient precision using allometric regression equations. Relationships between shoot basal area and biomass of the woody species (Calligonum, Populus and Tamarix) agreed with predictions by a theoretical model of plant vascular systems, suggesting that they are determined by hydraulic and mechanical requirements for shoot architecture. Average aboveground biomass densities of typical stands in late summer were 2.97 Mg/ha in Alhagi, 3.6 Mg/ha in a row plantation and 10.9 Mg/ha in homogenous stands of Calligonum, 22–29 Mg/ha in 22 year-old Populus forests and 1.9–3.1 Mg/ha in Tamarix-dominated vegetation. Annual aboveground production including wood and assimilation organs ranged from 2.11 to 11.3 Mg/ha in plantations of Calligonum, 3.17 to 6.12 Mg/ha in Populus, and 1.55 to 1.74 Mg/ha (based on total ground area) or 3.10 to 7.15 Mg/ha (in homogenous stands) in Tamarix. Production of Alhagi is equal to peak biomass. A thinning treatment simulating use by the local population enhanced productivity of Calligonum, Populus and Tamarix. A complete harvest of Alhagi in late August decreased production in the following year. An artificial flood irrigation treatment did not sufficiently increase soil water content except in the uppermost layer and had no clear beneficial effect on growth of the four species and even a negative effect on Alhagi, which was due to increased competition from annual species. As biomass and production with or without artificial irrigation were much higher than values expected for rain-fed desert vegetation at a mean annual precipitation of 35 mm, it is concluded that the existence of all vegetation types studied is probably based on permanent access to groundwater and that natural floods or precipitation do not contribute to their water supply. The effects of agricultural groundwater use in the oasis on groundwater in the foreland of the oasis need further study. Sustainable use of this productive vegetation is possible but requires proper management.  相似文献

Identification and characterization of lactic acid bacteria in ragi tape   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
One hundred and eighteen lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from five different types of ragi tape, a traditional dry-starter of Balinese rice wine. The isolates could be classified into three groups based on the cell shape and capability to produce gas from glucose. Group I contained 66 homofermentative cocci, group II contained seven homofermentative rods, and group III contained 45 heterofermentative rods. Among these 118 isolates, 21 isolates representing these groups were selected and were first identified using phenotypic characters. The identification performed phenotypically was confirmed by sequencing of variable region 8 (V8) of the 16S rDNA. The comparative studies led to the identification of Pediococcus pentosaceus, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus curvatus, Weissella confusa, and W. paramesenteroides from the ragi tape examined.  相似文献

Ten isolates of six species of ectomycorrhizal fungi were grown in vitro at nine concentrations of three sodium salts (NaCl, Na2SO4, Na3C6H5O7) for 4 weeks. Colony diamater, biomass and protein content of fungi were evaluated. Isolates of Pisolithus tinctorius and Suillus luteus were more tolerant of NaCl and Na2SO4 than of Na3C6H5O7. Fungi in the genera Cenococcum, Laccaria, and Thelephora were highly intolerant of Na3C6H5O7 and Na2SO4 in vitro. Biomass and protein content of fungi generally declined with increasing substrate salinity in solution culture. In situ ectomycorrhizal colonization by Laccara laccata and P. tinctorius and the dry weight of Pinus taeda seedlings were significantly reduced by 80 mM NaCl after 14 weeks. Only select ectomycorrhizal fungi appear capable of growth and symbiosis in saline soils.  相似文献

Variability in the size distributions of populations is usually studied in monocultures or in mixed plantings of two species. Variability of size distributions of populations in more complex communities has been neglected. The effects of seeding density (35 or 350 seeds/species/m2) and presence of small vertebrates on the variability of size distributions were studied for a total of 1,920 individuals of 4 species in replicated synthetic communities of 18 species in northern Illinois. End-of season height and above-ground biomass were measured for prairie perennials Dalea purpurea (purple prairie clover), Echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower), Desmanthus illinoensis (Illinois bundleflower) and Heliopsis helianthoides (early sunflower). Variability in biomass distribution of the four target species was twice as great at low than at high densities when small vertebrates were excluded. Our results suggest that inter- and intraspecific competition may affect all individuals more under high-density conditions, thereby reducing the variability in their biomass distributions within this community. This result, a consequence of plant-plant interaction, is obscured when small birds or mammals are present, presumably because either or both add variance that overwhelms the pattern.  相似文献

Synopsis Buoyancy was measured on eight species of estuarine fishes that were caught in 1 m depth or less. Mean buoyancies of the physoclists Fundulus heteroclitus, F. majalis, Cyprinodon variegatus and Leiostomus xanthurus were similar and ranged from –6.5 to –18.0 kiloPascals below atmospheric pressure at sea level. Menidia menidia and Pomatomus saltatrix measured –36.6 and –46.1 kPa, respectively. Two physostomes, Brevoortia tyrannus and Anchoa mitchilli, measured + 2.9 and –23.5 kPa, respectively, but the latter probably releases air when handled. The four most buoyant physoclist species live near the bottom in areas that receive daily tide induced currents. Negative buoyancy probably functions in them as in stream dwelling minnows and salmonids, which respond to currents by decreasing their buoyancy. The pronounced negative buoyancy of M. menidia may be a response to a preference for habitat where the currents are stronger, P. saltatrix, which can secrete gas into the swim bladder at the fastest rate known for any fish, combines high secretion (and resorption) rates with marked negative buoyancy. This enables it to quickly change depths over a wide vertical range, without overexpanding the swim bladder to cause positive buoyancy.  相似文献

Abundances and interactions among biological control insects and their effects on target invasive plants were monitored within the flower heads and roots of diffuse knapweed, Centaurea diffusa, and in spotted knapweed, Centaurea stoebe, along the Colorado Front Range. Flower weevils, (Larinus species) and root-feeders (Cyphocleonus achates and Sphenoptera jugoslavica) were released on knapweed that already supported biological control gall flies (Urophora species). At a single monitoring site, seed production by C. diffusa declined from 4400 seeds m−2 in 1997 to zero seeds m−2 on the monitoring sites in 2006, while the flowering stem density of C. diffusa declined from a peak of almost 30 stems m−2 in 2000 to zero stems m−2 in 2006. The average abundance of Urophora and Larinus in flower heads fluctuated independently during the 2001–2006 interval, while the relative abundance of C. achates and S. jugoslavica in roots exhibited a weak inverse relationship that appeared driven by climate effects. The relative abundance of insects on a population of C. stoebe was monitored for five years as Larinus species and C. achates became established on spotted knapweed that already supported Urophora species. Spotted knapweed seed production on our monitoring site declined from 4600 seeds m−2 in 2003 to zero seeds m−2 in 2006. Unlike C. diffusa, substantial numbers of rosettes of C. stoebe remained present. Larinus consumed almost all Urophora encountered in C. diffusa, and consumed about 40% of the Urophora in co-infested flower heads of C. stoebe (ca. 10–15% of the total Urophora population). No negative correlations between the relative densities of flower head and root-feeding insects were observed. The effects of these insects on target plants have produced results consistent with the ‘cumulative stress hypothesis’ for biological control of Centaurea species.  相似文献

A total of 1949 cell cultures was tested for contamination with mollicutes by cultivation on and in mycoplasma media, 25.7% of the cell cultures was positive, 243 strains of Mycoplasma hyorhinis were isolated. Furthermore, mainly M. arginini and M. orale were detected, less often Acholeplasma laidlawii, M. fermentans and M. pneumoniae. Optimal conditions for isolation were discussed. About one third of 217 hybridoma cultures and two third of 57 myeloma cultures proved to be contaminated, all with M. hyorhinis. A DNA fluorochrome staining method (DAPI-test) was compared to cultivation for testing 1039 cell cultures. The efficiency of the DAPI-test could be estimated to be about 96% that of cultivation about 89%, but cultivation is more specific. The highest assurance is obtained when both methods are applied.  相似文献

A survey was conducted on confined dairy cattle farms and a pig farm from May–October in 1999 to determine the activity and relative abundance of pupal parasitoids and the prevalence of entomopathogenic fungi in populations of the haematophagous stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae), in Denmark. Four species of pteromalids were found with Spalangia cameroni as the predominant. The other parasitoids were S. nigripes, S. nigra and Phygadeuon fumator (Ichneumonidae). Peak activity of the parasitoids was observed to be late in the summer and the beginning of autumn (August–September) when approximately 10% of the collected stable fly pupae were parasitised. Adult stable flies were infected with four species of entomopathogenic fungi: Entomophthora muscae, E. schizophorae, Beauveria bassiana and Verticillium lecanii. All fungi occurred in low percentages (max. 4%) and remained at this level throughout the sampling period. Likewise, adult house flies were infected with B. bassiana and V. lecanii, but Metarhizium anisopliae, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus and V. fusisporum were also recorded. The overall hyphomycete prevalence in house flies was 0.3%, and single species rarely exceeded 0.1%. The prevalence remained low in spite of increasing house fly numbers in August–September.  相似文献

Straight-chain saturated fatty acids (C6-C11) and abscisic acid (ABA) accumulate in the leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris L. and Hordeum vulgare L. under water stress. ABA and certain of the fatty acids, particularly decanoic and undecanoic acid, can inhibit stomatal opening and cause stomatal closure in epidermal strips of Commelina communis L. depending on the incubating medium used. 10-4 M (±)-ABA inhibits opening in media containing either high or relatively low concentrations of KCl but causes closure only in the latter medium. The fatty acids (at 10-4 M) prevent opening in both media while significant closure of open stomata was caused only by undecanoic acid in both media and, additionally, by decanoic acid in the low-KCl medium. 10-4 M formic acid also caused stomatal closure and prevented opening to significant extents in the low-KCl medium (it was not tested in the high-KCl medium). The efficacy of undecanoic acid in causing 50% inhibition of opening is about three orders of magnitude lower than that of ABA. At a concentration of 10-3 M, nonanoic, decanoic and particularly undecanoic acid and all-trans-farnesol cause increased cell leakage in Beta vulgaris L. root tissue. Undecanoic acid (10-4 M) also causes some loss of guard cell integrity in C. communis within 1.5 h of treatment. ABA (10-4 M) reduces transpiration rates in barley and C. communis leaves when applied via the transpiration stream but decanoic and undecanoic acids did not have this effect. Transpiration was not affected when ABA or the fatty acids were applied to the leaf surfaces.Abbreviations ABA abscisic acid - RWC relative water content - SCFA short-chain fatty acids Deceased May 1977  相似文献
